3 Purdue University Essay Examples

Home of the Boilermakers, Purdue University was established in 1869 and is steeped in history and tradition. From the first 39 students to attend in 1874, to over 33,000 in attendance today, Purdue is matched in tradition only by innovation. Known for its world-class faculty, curricula, and facilities, Purdue attracts many future engineers.

As it is a selective university, you will need a strong application to stand out. A crucial aspect lies in your essays. To get some inspiration for your Purdue essays, we will be sharing three essays by real students who applied to Purdue in this post. We will also go over what they did well and where they could’ve improved. 

Please note: Looking at examples of real essays students have submitted to colleges can be very beneficial to get inspiration for your essays. You should never copy or plagiarize from these examples when writing your own essays. Colleges can tell when an essay isn’t genuine and will not view students favorably if they plagiarized.

Essay Example #1

Prompt: Briefly discuss your reasons for pursuing the major you have selected (100 words)

To most Gen Z, life without computers and smartphones is like life without food: it’s impossible. However, I only started to appreciate the work behind the scenes (and screens) in the summer of 9th grade, when I created a small chatting program to exchange jokes with my sister in the next room. Through programming, I have found a clear and compelling way to reach the world beyond my fingertips. By majoring in computer science, I hope to build a solid foundation in AI, algorithms, UX design and more, with which I’ll help bring society a new generation of digital food.

What the Essay Did Well

This essay is short and sweet; every sentence is intentional and conveys a new idea clearly and concisely. Comparing their generation’s reliance on technology to “ life without food ” speaks volumes more than the three words it takes up. They simply explain what they did and why without any extraneous fluff or flowery language: “ I created a small chatting program to exchange jokes with my sister in the next room. ” Getting creative with your prose is great for a longer essay, but this is not the time or place, and this student understood that. They also get straight to the point when discussing what they hope to gain and achieve from a degree in computer science—another plus.

Despite the limited space, this student still manages to work in some of their personality. The analogy of smartphones being as crucial as food is a humorous example of hyperbole that helps humanize the student.  The phrase “ behind the scenes (and screens) ” is another way of them expressing their playful side while also adding a rhyme to make the essay more interesting. Including these little crumbs with humor, coupled with the knowledge they learned to program to share jokes, makes the student come across as a fun person admissions officers would want on their campus.

What Could Be Improved

Although the opening line about Gen Z is a chance for the student to inject some of their personality, in reality it is not the best use of space. As we said above, every word counts in an essay this short, and although the observation about Gen Z did contribute to the essay, it’s not as crucial to include as additional details about the student.

They could have kept the analogy to food, but instead of generalizing to all of Gen Z, this student should have made themselves the focus of the sentence. For example, they could say something like this: “ At this point my phone is a permanent appendage of my hand; life without it is like life without food. ” This sentence focuses the attention on the student right from the beginning, telling us about their phone addiction rather than everyone else’s.

Essay Example #2

How much duct tape would my boat need to stay afloat?

I will never forget my first Do-It-Yourself Project of building a boat with cardboard. While the outcome of the project was bitter-sweet as my boat sank, my passion for engineering surfaced. Subsequently, I voyaged across countless pursuits until I reached an epiphany while developing a customized voice assistant for an enterprise; I was fascinated by the multifaceted applicability of technology. Hence, I intend to pursue Computer Engineering because the skills from this major will enable me to pursue my widespread goals of lobbying for technological advancements in under-developed societies.

Starting the essay with a question is a great way to catch the reader’s attention in a short amount of space. Right off the bat, we are asking ourselves why are they using duct tape, what’s the boat for, how much duct tape do they need,  all of which get us engaged and excited for what is to come.

The student also does a nice job of incorporating sailing-related language with lines like “ my passion for engineering surfaced ” and “ I voyaged across countless pursuits. ” This is a creative way of linking the main points of their essay with their anecdote.

The student’s realizations are a bit underdeveloped. They don’t explain how they realized the “ multifaceted applicability of technology ” or why exactly they want to lobby “ for technological advancements in under-developed countries. ” They could’ve perhaps been better-served by eliminating the boat anecdote and beginning with the voice assistant story, which would allow them to explain their realization and goals. 

A common mistake students make with this prompt is that they think they have to include the very moment they got interested in the major. You certainly can use this technique, but it may not always be the best way to approach this essay, especially when there is such limited space. Instead of starting with the introduction, students should first focus on writing the reasons they like the major and what they hope to accomplish with it, and find a story or moment that flows with these points.

Essay Example #3

Prompt: How will opportunities at Purdue support your interests, both in and out of the classroom? (100 words)

The Computer Engineering course at Purdue has a dynamic combination of fundamental courses and enthralling electives such as ‘Engineering Environmental Sustainability’, allowing me to apply my engineering proficiency to resolve complex global issues such as technological disparity. Furthermore, by joining the Engineers Without Borders – Purdue organization, I will gain first-hand experience in tackling real-world humanitarian problems and push my intellectual ability to higher stakes. Having followed EWB- Purdue’s pioneering Bolivia project, I aspire to contribute in both the Technical and the Leadership team. Hence, Purdue is the best institution for me to grow as an enthusiastic humanitarian engineer. 

Right off the bat, the student is specifically noting courses the school offers that they are eager to take. This is great! They show that they’ve been following a specific organization within the school, and already have ideas as to how they could contribute. They really specified why they wanted to attend the school, and personalized the essay accordingly. 

This student also chose two opportunities at Purdue that seamlessly fit into their future career. They want to be a humanitarian engineer, so discussing a class about environmental sustainability and an organization that creates solutions to humanitarian issues around the world is a great way to demonstrate their affinity to their career throughout the essay. When they tell us their career aspirations at the very end of the essay, it makes perfect sense to the reader based on the 100 preceding words we just read.

The main issues in this essay come from minor grammatical mistakes that could confuse the reader. For example, the first sentence covers too much ground: The Computer Engineering course at Purdue has a dynamic combination of fundamental courses and enthralling electives such as ‘Engineering Environmental Sustainability’, allowing me to apply my engineering proficiency to resolve complex global issues such as technological disparity. Instead, the reader should separate these ideas into two sentences. In the first sentence, the student can explain the courses they are interested in, and the second can give reasons why and explain what the student’s career goals are. Overall, it very clearly addresses the prompt, shows the student has done their research, and shows their ambitions after graduation. It is very well done.

Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Purdue Supplemental Essays 2024-25 – Prompts and Advice

Purdue is a school where the non-scary acceptance rate figures are not truly indicative of just how competitive the admissions process actually is. This public land grant research university in Indiana is actually a draw for students from around the world—out-of-staters apply at three times the volume of Hoosier State residents. Highly renowned academic programs in areas such as computer science, engineering, and business are part of the reason that the average enrolled applicant attending Purdue today possesses an SAT of 1300+ and a 3.7 unweighted GPA. This brings us to the topic of the Purdue supplemental essays.

In a competitive admissions environment, Purdue’s essay prompts are viewed by the committee as being “important” to the evaluation process. Therefore, it is vital that all Boilermaker applicants dedicate a significant amount of time to these three essays. Below are Purdue University’s supplemental prompts for the 2024-25 admissions cycle along with our advice for composing winning essays.

Purdue University Essay Prompt #1 (Required)

1) How will opportunities at Purdue support your interests, both in and out of the classroom? (250 words)

Purdue’s essay may not directly ask the applicant “Why Us?” but make no mistake—this is very much a classic “Why Us?” essay that will require some research. Luckily, they upped the word count from 100 words to 250 words, which means you can squeeze in twice as many details.

Examples of items that quality “Why Purdue?” essays touch upon include:

• Firstly, opportunities available through the Office of Undergraduate Research.
• Purdue’s 30+ study abroad programs .
• The 600 student organizations on campus.
• The Pathmaker Internship Program.
• Numerous combined degree opportunities for ambitious students.
• Unique academic opportunities available through your department/major of choice.

Of course, these are just five out of countless features that could be part of a successful essay. You may also wish to address items like specific courses you are excited about, particular professors, or internship/co-op placements that you would aim to take advantage of. Finally, be sure to explain why each program/offering is appealing to you.

Purdue Supplemental Essays (Continued)

Essay Prompt #2 (Required)

2) Briefly discuss your reasons for pursuing the major you have selected. (250 words)

Share an authentic story here of why you are interested in your selected discipline. What books have you read on the subject? What documentaries have you watched? Which podcasts have you listened to? What subtopics most intrigue you? Did a teacher excite you about a topic or was it a parent or outside mentor? Do you know where you want to take this knowledge post-bachelor’s degree? Do you aim to one day go on to pursue a graduate/professional degree or is there an occupation you are shooting for right out of undergrad? Include as much detail as possible.

You can structure the narrative of this essay as a soup-to-nuts chronicling of your entire journey toward your discipline of interest or share one or two vignettes that illustrate your burgeoning passion for engineering, history, French, computer science, business, psychology, etc.

Essay Prompt #3 (Required if listing a second major)

3) Briefly discuss your reasons for pursuing the alternate major you have selected. (Respond in 250 words or fewer.)

See answer #2 re: your first-choice major. You are essentially repeating this process for a different field. However, avoid having two completely unrelated majors/career goals. For example, if your first choice was business and your second choice was economics, it’s easy to explain the relationship. If the fields are more disparate (e.g. Dance & Chemical Engineering), be sure to provide a thorough explanation.

How important are the Purdue supplemental essays?

The essays (both the Common App essay and two supplemental essays) are “important” to the Purdue admissions committee, given the same weight as recommendations, extracurricular activities, character/personal qualities, and first-generation status. This places the essays behind only GPA, standardized test scores, and the rigor of your secondary school record, all three of which are designated as “very important” by Purdue.

Hello! It's always helpful to see what others have done, but remember that your essay should be unique to you and your experiences. With that in mind, here are some general tips for crafting a strong Purdue supplemental essay:

1. Answer the Prompt: Make sure you understand the prompt and focus your essay on answering it clearly. Purdue prompts usually focus on why you're interested in your chosen major, your future goals, and how Purdue can help you achieve them.

2. Be Specific: Show that you have done your research about Purdue and its programs. Mention courses, faculty members, clubs, or research opportunities that align with your interests. This demonstrates that you are serious about attending Purdue and that you have taken the time to learn about the university.

3. Show Passion and Drive: Successful essays often showcase the author's passion for their chosen field or subject. Try to share experiences or anecdotes that illustrate your dedication and excitement. This could be a project you've undertaken, an event you've attended, or a skill you've developed.

4. Focus on Growth: Highlight how you've grown or changed as a result of your experiences. Talk about what you learned, how you overcame challenges, or how your interests evolved. This shows your resilience and adaptability, qualities that colleges appreciate in their students.

Purdue asks for three essays, two of which are arguably even essays at all, as they only allow up to 100 words for your answer. The third is longer, with 250 words allowed. These are short essays, and require you to get right to the point to ensure that all the necessary information is conveyed.

Extracurricular - Example

Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (250 words)

In June 2018, I interned at Code Park, a Houston-based startup educating underprivileged children about coding technology.

I taught students proper coding syntax using the Scratch programming language, an easy to use coding language that allows beginners to create animations, games, and other projects through puzzle-style coding compositions. Through this interactive training, students enjoyed creative cartoon animations on their screen when they entered text into a compiler.

We provided computers called Raspberry Pis – cost effective microchips with accessible, user-friendly software – to teach students programming. In essence, we were introducing the students to computer science. Code Park gave everyone an opportunity to experience a core concept of computer programming: input and output.

Scratch is a programming language with little behind-the-scenes coding; every line affects the end result. Putting hard work into the compiler guarantees rewarding results as an output.

This surprised many of my students, who came from schools that were underfunded, understaffed, and demoralized. At first the children were shy, choosing to remain silent when they didn’t understand a concept. Rather than just lecturing to them, though, I made my classes more engaging by asking them questions on command functions or what they were creating in the program. As I taught, I communicated both information and motivation. I showed my students how to input, and helped them believe that their hard work would create worthwhile and entertaining outputs.  

This opportunity not only gave me leadership experience, but also provided a chance for making a positive impact in my community.

  To me, leadership is uniting everyone around the same vision, motivating them with a shared sense of victory. Last summer, that meant children cheering around their freshly-made cartoons; ten years from now, it will mean engineers celebrating their latest project – and maybe one of my students will be celebrating with me.

Extracurricular - Analysis

This question is quite open ended, which makes it very easy to adapt one of your other essays to answer it. We suggest repurposing a community or leadership essay if you have written one which discusses an extracurricular, as these are both values colleges like to see in students, and will allow you to explore an extracurricular as well. Further, Purdue does not ask for either a leadership or a community essay, meaning you don’t have to worry about repeating yourself.

This is the longest essay Purdue asks for, and allows you to share the most details about your life and accomplishments. That said, this is still not a long essay, so most of your word count should go towards discussing what you actually did, in place of flowery prose.

In the example above, the author first explains the mechanics of what they did for a computer science internship; what they taught, what code they used, and what hardware they worked with. This demonstrates the depth and breadth of their CS experience to the school, and shows that they actually know what they’re talking about, and their passion for the field.

Next, they discuss how they interacted with the students they were in charge of, and how they worked to ensure the relationships they formed were good ones. This shows the author’s leadership ability and empathy, and demonstrates their willingness and ability to teach others.

These are all traits colleges want to see in students, as community minded and engaged students are more likely to contribute positively to the campus community as well. You do not need to demonstrate these exact traits in your own essay, but you should show what values you hold, and what you will be able to contribute to Purdue should you be admitted.

The essay doesn’t really have a hook, but that’s ok; there really isn’t room for one. There is a solid conclusion, and we support spending the word count on this. The final note of your essay is often what readers remember best, and this essay ends on a positive and community minded idea. 

Finally, if you discuss one of your extracurriculars in your personal statement, you should try to discuss a different one in this essay. Admissions officers only know what you tell them, so you should endeavor to tell them as much as possible.

Why Major - Example

Briefly discuss your reasons for pursuing the major you have selected. (Respond in 100 words or fewer.)

Wandering through the dense jungles of the Malaysian peninsula as a second grader, I was awestruck by the vibrant colors: vast green leaves, yellow moss creeping up the trees, and massive red petals from the giant rafflesia flowers.

Unfortunately, by 2050, researchers project millions of animal species will face extinction and millions more humans will be displaced from their homes due to climate change, careless fossil fuel byproduct pollution, deforestation, and land degradation. Considering these dangers, I want to use my mathematical and analytical abilities to be an environmental engineer and preserve the world’s oldest– and most beautiful– landscapes.

Why Major - Analysis

This is a short essay, to the point where it may be better to call it a short answer question. That said, you should still treat it with the seriousness of an essay in your approach.

What Purdue is looking for here is the same thing many schools look for: why you want to study the subject you want to study. Committing to a major is a big step, and Purdue wants to be sure you are certain of your choice, as changing your mind later can be difficult.

Fortunately, many schools ask for an essay of this sort, so it is usually easy to adapt a previously written essay to answer this question. The most difficult part will be editing your essay down to fit within the reduced word count.

In the example above, the author spends the first few sentences setting a scene, before introducing a problem to be solved. Finally, they say they want to pursue their major in order to solve this problem, and return to the well-crafted scene the essay began with.

While the exact structure of your essay will differ, you should explain clearly why you want to pursue your chosen major. Since there is so little space, everything you include should be done so deliberately. When you are editing another school’s essay down, determine what the most important parts are to the overall message, and what can be cut safely.

Why Us - Example

How will opportunities at Purdue support your interests, both in and out of the classroom? (Respond in 100 words or fewer.)

The best engineers are focused on preventing problems so well that nobody ever even knows those problems existed in the first place. With a Purdue education, I will be able to solve some of these challenging engineering problems firsthand. Research opportunities like the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) will allow me to explore engineering questions that can help advance society globally under the tutelage of expert professors and mentors. Meanwhile, in clubs like BoilerMake and Purdue Mechatronics, my interests in cyber security and engineering will flourish alongside new friends as we code new solutions to the world’s  most pressing problems.

Why Us - Analysis

Purdue’s final prompt is another common one; they want to know why you desire to attend their school. Since many schools ask this question, you should already have material to work with when writing this essay. Due to the limited word count allowed however, you will have to be much more selective about what you discuss.

In the example above, the author touches briefly on several topics, but still manages to provide specific examples. Their use of these examples is important; referencing programs and clubs by name shows the school that you have done your research, and that you are serious about attending.

The author has one example of an academic program, and spends the bulk of the essay discussing Purdue’s academics. We recommend you do the same, as the reason you attend college is to learn, so you should talk about why you want to learn at that school. 

The author also mentions a pair of clubs they wish to join. While this should not be the main focus of your essay, including it can be helpful to show how you want to engage with the community at Purdue. Indeed, the author expresses just such a wish for community at the end of this essay.

Purdue isn’t looking for praise of their programs, they want to see how specifically the programs they offer will benefit you and your goals. There is not much room for a hook or deep exploration. You can either choose a single aspect of the school and dive in deeply, or pick a few things to touch on more briefly. Which you decide to use should reflect what drew you to the school in the first place.

You should not talk about the school’s location, and any mention of sports should be brief, unless you are a recruited athlete. While Purdue is proud of these things, they should not be your main draw to the school.

What is a well written answer to an essay question?

Well Focused

Be sure to answer the question completely, that is, answer all parts of the question. Avoid "padding." A lot of rambling and ranting is a sure sign that the writer doesn't really know what the right answer is and hopes that somehow, something in that overgrown jungle of words was the correct answer.

Well Organized

Don't write in a haphazard "think-as-you-go" manner. Do some planning and be sure that what you write has a clearly marked introduction which both states the point(s) you are going to make and also, if possible, how you are going to proceed. In addition, the essay should have a clearly indicated conclusion which summarizes the material covered and emphasizes your thesis or main point.

Well Supported

Do not just assert something is true, prove it. What facts, figures, examples, tests, etc. prove your point? In many cases, the difference between an A and a B as a grade is due to the effective use of supporting evidence.

Well Packaged

People who do not use conventions of language are thought of by their readers as less competent and less educated. If you need help with these or other writing skills, come to the Writing Lab

How do you write an effective essay exam?

• Read through all the questions carefully.
• Budget your time and decide which question(s) you will answer first.
• Underline the key word(s) which tell you what to do for each question.
• Choose an organizational pattern appropriate for each key word and plan your answers on scratch paper or in the margins.
• Write your answers as quickly and as legibly as you can; do not take the time to recopy.
• Begin each answer with one or two sentence thesis which summarizes your answer. If possible, phrase the statement so that it rephrases the question's essential terms into a statement (which therefore directly answers the essay question).
• Support your thesis with specific references to the material you have studied.
• Proofread your answer and correct errors in spelling and mechanics.

Specific organizational patterns and "key words"

Most essay questions will have one or more "key words" that indicate which organizational pattern you should use in your answer. The six most common organizational patterns for essay exams are definition, analysis, cause and effect, comparison/contrast, process analysis, and thesis-support.

Typical questions

• "Define X."
• "What is an X?"
• "Choose N terms from the following list and define them."

Q: "What is a fanzine?"

A: A fanzine is a magazine written, mimeographed, and distributed by and for science fiction or comic strip enthusiasts.

Avoid constructions such as "An encounter group is where ..." and "General semantics is when ... ."

• State the term to be defined.
• State the class of objects or concepts to which the term belongs.
• Differentiate the term from other members of the class by listing the term's distinguishing characteristics.

Tools you can use

• Details which describe the term
• Examples and incidents
• Comparisons to familiar terms
• Negation to state what the term is not
• Classification (i.e., break it down into parts)
• Examination of origins or causes
• Examination of results, effects, or uses

Analysis involves breaking something down into its components and discovering the parts that make up the whole.

• "Analyze X."
• "What are the components of X?"
• "What are the five different kinds of X?"
• "Discuss the different types of X."

Q: "Discuss the different services a junior college offers a community."

A: Thesis: A junior college offers the community at least three main types of educational services: vocational education for young people, continuing education for older people, and personal development for all individuals.

Outline for supporting details and examples. For example, if you were answering the example question, an outline might include:

• Vocational education
• Continuing education
• Personal development

Write the essay, describing each part or component and making transitions between each of your descriptions. Some useful transition words include:

• first, second, third, etc.
• in addition

Conclude the essay by emphasizing how each part you have described makes up the whole you have been asked to analyze.

Cause and Effect

Cause and effect involves tracing probable or known effects of a certain cause or examining one or more effects and discussing the reasonable or known cause(s).

Typical questions:

• "What are the causes of X?"
• "What led to X?"
• "Why did X occur?"
• "Why does X happen?"
• "What would be the effects of X?"

Q: "Define recession and discuss the probable effects a recession would have on today's society."

A: Thesis: A recession, which is a nationwide lull in business activity, would be detrimental to society in the following ways: it would .......A......., it would .......B......., and it would .......C....... .

The rest of the answer would explain, in some detail, the three effects: A, B, and C.

Comparison-Contrast

• "How does X differ from Y?"
• "Compare X and Y."
• "What are the advantages and disadvantages of X and Y?"

Q: "Which would you rather own—a compact car or a full-sized car?"

A: Thesis: I would own a compact car rather than a full-sized car for the following reasons: .......A......., .......B......., .......C......., and .......D....... .

Process (sometimes called process analysis)

This involves giving directions or telling the reader how to do something. It may involve discussing some complex procedure as a series of discrete steps. The organization is almost always chronological.

Q: "According to Richard Bolles' What Color Is Your Parachute?, what is the best procedure for finding a job?"

A: In What Color Is Your Parachute?, Richard Bolles lists seven steps that all job-hunters should follow: .....A....., .....B....., .....C....., .....D....., .....E....., .....F....., and .....G..... .

The remainder of the answer should discuss each of these seven steps in some detail.

Thesis and Support

• "Discuss X."

Thesis and support involves stating a clearly worded opinion or interpretation and then defending it with all the data, examples, facts, and so on that you can draw from the material you have studied.

Q: "Despite criticism, television is useful because it aids in the socializing process of our children."

A: Television hinders rather than helps in the socializing process of our children because .......A......., .......B......., and .......C....... .

The rest of the answer is devoted to developing arguments A, B, and C.

A. Which of the following two answers is the better one? Why?

Question: Discuss the contribution of William Morris to book design, using as an example his edition of the works of Chaucer.

a. William Morris's Chaucer was his masterpiece. It shows his interest in the Middle Ages. The type is based on medieval manuscript writing, and the decoration around the edges of the pages is like that used in medieval books. The large initial letters are typical of medieval design. Those letters were printed from woodcuts, which was the medieval way of printing. The illustrations were by Burn-Jones, one of the best artists in England at the time. Morris was able to get the most competent people to help him because he was so famous as a poet and a designer (the Morris chair) and wallpaper and other decorative items for the home. He designed the furnishings for his own home, which was widely admired among the sort of people he associated with. In this way he started the arts and crafts movement.

b. Morris's contribution to book design was to approach the problem as an artist or fine craftsman, rather than a mere printer who reproduced texts. He wanted to raise the standards of printing, which had fallen to a low point, by showing that truly beautiful books could be produced. His Chaucer was designed as a unified work of art or high craft. Since Chaucer lived in the Middle Ages, Morris decided to design a new type based on medieval script and to imitate the format of a medieval manuscript. This involved elaborate letters and large initials at the beginnings of verses, as well as wide borders of intertwined vines with leaves, fruit, and flowers in strong colors. The effect was so unusual that the book caused great excitement and inspired other printers to design beautiful rather than purely utilitarian books.

This is basically a super short Why essay and the best way to answer it is to do your research. If you set aside an hour to crawl through the school website and jot down the things that appeal to you, you’ll end up with a pretty comprehensive list of things that are relevant to your interests. Write down literally everything: courses, professors, clubs, traditions, you name it! You’ll put this information to good use in this essay and the next one. When you’ve finished your research spree, group your notes thematically, and pick a small cluster to cover in this brief essay. For example, let’s say you love creative writing (we get you). You might describe how taking a combination of English and history classes will help you write the Great American Novel, while joining an improv group in the meantime will sharpen your wit and creative thinking. College is a time to explore, so show admissions just how you plan to do that. Space is limited, so don’t worry about getting too detailed about your major and professional goals. You’ll have an opportunity to do that in the next short essay you write.

This prompt is all about your intellectual curiosity, but also your ambition for the future. There are so many reasons to pursue a degree in economics: because you’ve always wanted to apply your interest in math to the real world; or because you’re gunning for a career in finance; or even because you want to make policy one day. No one is more or less valid than the other, so first and foremost, be honest about your reasons. Then refer to your notes to fill in the details with colorful examples. In a short essay like this, you’ve got to shoot from the hip, so be specific and succinct. What makes Purdue the ideal place to pursue your dream? The program is both flexible and comprehensive, allowing each college to customize its engagement objectives while aligning with the broader university engagement framework and protocol . Participating colleges will complete two key deliverables: a college engagement self-assessment and a college engagement action plan. These deliverables are designed to help colleges evaluate their current engagement practices and develop plans to enhance their impact in the future to align with Purdue’s engagement goals.

Many of Purdue’s colleges are already doing remarkable work in community engagement; however, there is currently no shared definition and/or standardized process to measure the impact of these activities university wide. The ECP addresses this gap by creating a framework that allows for better measurement, storytelling, and recognition of engagement efforts across campus. As a land-grant university, Purdue has a long-standing commitment to serving communities through community engagement. The ECP will help ensure that this effort continues by providing a clear structure for colleges to follow in their engagement activities.

The ECP is a key component of Purdue’s upcoming reclassification application for the Carnegie Foundation’s Elective Classification for Community Engagement . Purdue received this classification in 2008 and was reclassified in 2015. The university must apply again in April 2025 to retain this designation. By participating in the program, colleges can demonstrate their commitment to community engagement and learn more about their community engagement efforts by providing evidence of their impact through the self-assessment and action plan. From a university perspective, it will provide community engagement data, examples, and anecdotes to enhance its storytelling.

The ECP offers resources and support to help colleges focus on their community engagement priorities. This includes building and maintaining quality partnerships, improving assessment and tracking processes, raising awareness of engagement opportunities, and recognizing and rewarding engagement activities. This initiative will also increase the visibility of engagement work within the university, allowing colleges to connect with others who are working with community partners. This collaboration can lead to more impactful engagement efforts, as well as increased support for engaged research and teaching activities.

The Engaged College Program initiative will have a lasting impact on Purdue University’s engagement efforts by telling Purdue’s story of community engagement. Colleges across campus will be key in strengthening Purdue’s engagement commitment and ensuring engagement activities are impactful.

Congratulations to the College of Veterinary Medicine for being the FIRST college to complete the ECP (self-assessment and action plan)! The task force, spearheaded by Professor Sandy SanMiguel self-assessed their college across the 25 items and five dimensions. Due to this self-assessment, for example, they learned that they need to improve data gathering around engagement and storytelling. Their action plan consists of six items across two goals.

This process enabled us to take stock of all of the diverse engagement initiatives we have launched with communities across the globe.  As a result, we are inspired to expand awareness of all that we are accomplishing through these mutually beneficial collaborations that positively impact animal and public health

Read the college essay a Harvard grad wrote about McDonald's that landed him offers from Harvard, Yale, and Princeton

• Cofounder of AI company Exa Jeffrey Wang wrote his college application essay about McDonald's.
• The Harvard graduate said he wanted to make his essay authentic and entertaining.
• Wang said he got into Yale, Harvard, and Princeton using the same essay.

When Jeffrey Wang was a high-school senior in Connecticut in 2014, he wasn't sure what to write about for his college application essay.

He thought about writing his essay on a subject he enjoyed at school or a project he'd worked on. But he knew others would have the same idea .

Wang told Business Insider he grew up in a middle-class family in the suburbs of Cheshire, CT. He felt he didn't have anything extraordinary to write about.

"I hadn't spent any summers abroad, and I hadn't done any fancy programs," he said.

He wanted to show his personality

He read Harry Bauld's book, 'On Writing the College Application Essay,' which made him realize college admissions officers wouldn't have time to read each essay diligently.

He said he realized his primary objective should be to entertain the admissions officer reading his essay .

"For the most part, they're just looking for character," Wang said. He decided to write about studying at McDonald's.

He told BI he thought it might pique an admissions officer's interest and illustrate his character: someone who did well at school but also hangs out at a McDonald's.

Wang said he also wanted to use his essay to challenge assumptions admissions officers might have. "I'm an Asian-American with a perfect SAT score. Maybe that looks pretty cookie-cutter on paper," he said.

Authenticity is key

The essay summarizes how Wang discovered his local McDonald's was an ideal place to study and meditate. He mentioned he liked interacting with different community members and how it was a more efficient and affordable study space than other options. The underpinning message is finding joy or peace in unusual places.

"For the most part, it was a pretty authentic essay," Wang said, adding that he included a few "intellectual references," such as a novel and a physicist, to show the admissions officer he was smart. He said if he were to write it now, he'd leave out the big words and references.

His parents were worried the topic was too risky, but Wang said he felt confident, and if an admissions officer didn't like it — the school wasn't the right fit.

He got into Yale, Harvard, and Princeton

Growing up, Wang dreamed of attending Yale in his home state of Connecticut. He applied to Yale under early decision , using his essay about McDonald's.

Wang received an offer of financial aid from Yale, but he told BI he wanted to see if he could get more from other colleges.

He applied to Harvard, Duke, Princeton, MIT, and others with the same essay. He got into both Princeton and Harvard, and received offers of financial aid from them both. Business Insider has verified these offers with documentation.

Wang chose to study computer science at Harvard in 2015 because he said it was the best for STEM subjects, and he wanted to be further away from home.

He still tries to live authentically

Wang said if his friends read his essay now, 10 years after he submitted it, they'd recognize his personality in it. It shows his "scrappy" attitude to life, he said.

After graduating from Harvard in 2019, he started working as a software engineer for a tech company in San Francisco. He quit in 2022, and cofounded his startup Exa, a search engine for AI, in 2023.

Wang believes that prioritizing authenticity helped his success since college. "If you do things that you feel are authentic or that are right, you'll be rewarded for it," he said.
