The new Chair of Health Economics, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Armando Meier, at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel invites applications for a PhD position (teaching and research assistant). The position is fully funded and supported by a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) grant. The successful applicant will be working on topics related to health, labor, and behavioral economics.    Prof. Dr. Armando Meier has worked, among others, on research examining how to increase vaccination uptake, the impacts of emotions on decision-making, and the long-run effects of the gender environment at school on occupational sorting and the wage gap. 

Your position You will become part of an international research group in an English-speaking environment and are welcome to interact closely with members of the new Basel Center for Health Economics (BCHE). The Center also includes groups working on behavioral health economics and development economics at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). Your research contributes to SNSF projects related to health and labor economics, including an SNSF project on “Economic, Behavioral, and Health Consequences of Medical Guidelines” that investigates doctor decision-making following medical tests and its impacts on health outcomes. You will conduct high-level scientific research towards a PhD and assist and participate in research, teaching and administrative tasks. Teaching duties may be carried out in German or English. The position will entail a performance review after 1 year after which the position can be extended to a total of 4 years.

  • You are on your way to or already have an excellent MSc degree (or equivalent) in a field such as Economics, Econometrics, or Finance
  • You have very good knowledge of economics and are passionate and curious about doing impactful, interdisciplinary work in the domains of health, behavioral and/or labor economics, such as on understanding the impact of cancer screening guidelines on population health and labor market outcomes
  • You have a solid knowledge of econometrics and first experience with statistical programs such as STATA, R, or Python and a high willingness to attain excellent econometrics skills including on machine learning
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English

The new Basel Center for Health Economics brings together experts in economics and medicine to conduct innovative research and teaching on pressing issues facing the health care sector today.

The center will focus on a wide range of topics, including the economics of health insurance, and of disease prevention and treatment, the allocation of health care resources, and the impact of health policies on patients and populations.

A key goal of BCHE is to bridge the gap between academia and the real world. Through partnerships with industry, providers of health care, health insurers and government, the center will aim to make its research and insights directly applicable to the challenges facing health care professionals and policymakers.

We believe that the unique combination of medical and economic expertise at BCHE will lead to relevant advances in the field and contribute to an improvement of health systems.

PhD in International Economics

The PhD programme in international economics offers a rigorous and stimulating course of study where you will develop research skills allowing you to contribute to expanding knowledge with a policy orientation. Our faculty has expert knowledge over a wide range of issues in international economics, including international trade, the impact of globalization, international financial markets, sustainable finance and macroeconomic policy design. Professors have active connections with economic policy institutions and bring you exposure to the latest debates in policy circles.

Our Phd is structured around the training program of the Gerzensee Study Center (becoming compulsory as core courses from 2024 onwards) as well as two specialized courses to choose from.  Those courses focus on Macroeconomics, Trade, Development Economics, Econometrics and Environment. Our high faculty to student ratio, collegial atmosphere among students, and a range of research and policy seminars ensure that you will develop a solid set of skills and insights. Our four-year PhD programme offers a stimulating environment in which highly-qualified graduates can develop research skills that will enable them to contribute to knowledge in the field of Development Economics with a policy orientation. Our faculty focuses on a wide-range of topics, from global macroeconomic issues, such as the determinants of economic growth, to microeconomic work on financial inclusion, gender, education, health, SME development, sustainable finance and migration.

Our Phd is structured around the training program of the Gerzensee Study Center (becoming compulsory as core courses from 2024 onwards) as well as two specialized courses to choose from.  Those courses focus on Macroeconomics, Trade, Development Economics, Econometrics and Environment. PhD students also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching, policy seminars and research activities at the Institute and will be well prepared to participate and present in international conferences. Through this process, we aim at preparing young economists who are sought-after by academic institutions, international organisations and the private sector. Recent graduates have been successful in securing highly competitive jobs in each of these areas.

PhD courses open to students from other Swiss universities

The International Economics Department welcomes participants from Swiss universities in its PhD courses.  

With this initiative, the Department wishes to provide PhD students working in international economics in Switzerland an opportunity to interact and develop a community with their peers.  

We offer courses in Development Economics, International Trade and International Macro/Finance. These courses are organised in the form of modules concentrated over consecutive days to allow students to participate on-site. Remote access will also be provided. 

Students are welcome to take the course for ECTS credits or to participate as auditors.

Digital skills for phd students.

The P8 programme, initiated by Swissuniversities in 2019, aims to enhance digital skills in education. Specifically focused on supporting universities, the programme offers workshops for PhD students from the Geneva Graduate Institute.  These workshops combine traditional presentations with practical exercises to impart knowledge and skills, creating new learning opportunities. While these workshops do not provide academic credits, students who attend and complete a workshop will receive a certificate.  Further information regarding upcoming workshops and our previous workshops can be found on the Libguide .

Phd program.

The Department of Economics runs a small but high-quality PhD program. PhD students can attend first-year courses at the Study Center Gerzensee, together with PhD students from other Swiss universities.

Many of our previous PhD students have spent one or two semester of their graduate studies abroad, at universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Brown University, etc.

The Department of Economics has an excellent track record of placing graduates in research-oriented positions in government agencies and the private sector. Graduates that seek to pursue an academic career often get very good placements as well. List of Recent Placements.

During the coursework stage, doctoral students shall attend courses in the amount of at least 24 ECTS. The students must successfully complete a sequence of first-year PhD courses offered by the Swiss Program for Beginning Doctoral Students in Economics at Gerzensee or by another program recognized as equivalent by the PhD program committee.

In addition, the students are required to obtain at least 6 ECTS from advanced PhD courses offered by the department of economics. Each year, the department offers at least one advanced PhD course in each of thefollowing areas of research: macroeconomics, microeconomics and quantitative methods.

Doctoral Thesis

The doctoral thesis is evaluated and graded by the dissertation committee, which consists of the main advisor and at least a second reviewer who is not a member of the department.

The PhD program at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences leads, after successful completion, to the title Doctor rerum oeconomicarum, Dr. rer. oec.

Admission requirements

The admission requirements are given by the Reglement über das Doktoratsstudium (german only).

  • The applicant must find a main advisor in the Department of Economics who is willing to supervise her/his dissertation.
  • The applicant must have obtained a Master's degree in Economics (or a similar degree) from a recognized university. Furthermore, a minimum overall grade of the Master's degree must have been achieved. For applicants with a Master's degree from the University of Bern the minimum grade is 4.75. Students with a Master's degree in another field can be admitted if they have completed at least 60 ECTS in Economics, or if they complete the missing credits from the Master program in Economics. In the latter case, the PhD program committee decides on the coursework that needs to be completed.

The faculty can be contacted for any assistance when required. All tests and assignment submissions also take place via the e-Campus. This program can be completed in about 1.5 to 2 years. It is fully self-paced, so you can increase your pace or go slow based on your time availability.

The primary mode of learning is via pre-recorded lectures, videos, reading materials etc. A few live guest lectures are scheduled during the program however they are optional to attend. Whenever such sessions are scheduled they are planned in a way that is convenient for most of our students. If you are unable to attend, a reccorded version will be provided.

You will be able to interact with the faculty via the personal messaging facility available in your study account, discussion forum, or via emails. A short phone call can also be scheduled if necessary.

A discussion group is available for the program. You can post your questions in the group and other students may respond.

Generally, you do not need to purchase any books. All the resources that you need will be made available by the faculty in your account. If you do wish to have text books, then the faculty can recommend to you some, and you may purchase them on your own,

Each unit within each course will be followed by a short multiple-choice question test. Once you pass, the next unit will activate for you to study. You can take these tests as many times as you need to.

In addition, you will be required to submit assignments for each course. Assignments are like essay or paper writing, usually of 1000 – 1500 words. Guidelines on how to write them will be available in your account.

You can save the pdf study notes that will be provided for each unit. Videos and other multimedia content cannot be downloaded.

Once you are nearning the completion of your coursework, you will work with your mentor to finalize a topic. You will then work on your dissertation under the guidance of your mentor and submit it once complete. The word count required is a minimum of 15000 words. You may be required to defend the dissertation as per the applicable academic policies.

No, our degree does not mention that the program was conducted online.

A graduation ceremony may be conducted at one of our international locations.

If you cannot attend then you will be invited for a virtual graduation ceremony via video-conferencing. After this the completion documents are sent to your postal address by courier.
