Honoring Florence Nightingale

May 12th is the birthday of one of the most iconic and innovative nurses of all time: Florence Nightingale. Her story is motivating, inspiring, and helps remind nurses of the significance of profession. 

Born in Italy, into an affluent British family, her family took great pride in their connections within elite social circles and had specific expectations for Florence including marriage and children. Nightingale’s family discouraged her from entering the nursing profession, but she did it anyway. In1844, Nightingale enrolled as a nursing student at the Lutheran Hospital of Pastor Fliedner in Kaiserwerth, Germany.

After risking her life during a Cholera outbreak, she volunteered to travel overseas and care for hospitalized soldiers during the Crimean War. It was at this time that Nightingale helped develop the hospital's sanitation practices and procedures. Because of her, two-thirds fewer people died, and much was learned about patient care and cleanliness.

Nightingale also established St. Thomas’s Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860. Upon her death in August 1910, at her home in London, Nightingale was honored throughout the nursing profession and forever changed the landscape of modern nursing.

It is now time to look to the future and demonstrate what these investments will mean for nursing and healthcare."

How We Celebrate International Nurse’s Day

Hospitals may celebrate and honor their nurses in many different ways. Providing coffee, catering lunches, handing out swag like T-shirts and water bottles, and passing out individual gifts and signed thank you cards are just a few of the many things hospitals and healthcare systems may do.

Nurses are one of the largest and most vital workforces in healthcare. With the ever-changing processes and continuing advances in hospitals, they still need to meet expectations of both hospital management and patients whilst providing even more complex patient care.

As a result, nurses often describe their days as demanding, erratic, and both mentally and emotionally draining. These are some of the reasons why there is so much work-related stress, job dissatisfaction and poor personal health associated with the nursing profession.

Burnout, a state of physical and emotional exhaustion, is relatively common for those in healthcare professions. A study in BMC Nursing has investigated the factors which impact both this and work engagement in nurses through detailed interviewing. Collaboration with staff was seen as essential for effective workload balance but this was not always easy to attain, and nurses voiced clear frustration as a result.

It also became apparent that the need to provide increasingly complex patient care for chronic conditions coupled with a shortage of hospital staff causes a great deal of strain on nurses. In this study, one of the nurses even claimed “Our management expects good patient care quality but with a decrease of care personal … not easy.” Unsurprisingly, nurse managers also admitted that high workloads could affect quality of patient care and safety, not least of all because nurses become unable to socially interact with their patients and may be more prone to making mistakes.

The concerns regarding staff shortage has been echoed in many papers. One such example is a local study published in BMC Research Notes in which the combination of staff shortage, manual lifting and overtime hours was associated with a high prevalence of lower back pain in nurses in Bangladesh.

In a paper in BMC Obesity , nurses also stated that factors such as poor staffing, shift patterns, lack of breaks, hospital policies and the cost of food options can promote unhealthy behavioural habits, such as poor eating and inadequate physical activity. Nurses said they were left with “chips or burgers or things like that” during their night shifts and that, in general, working shifts made eating healthy “quite a struggle.”

The interviewed nurses mentioned that some of the issues could be resolved by offering more flexible shift hours – this would allow them the time for exercise, coping with family demands, and adequate sleep.

Furthermore, the papers suggested that a management which ensures a stimulating, positive environment would boost work engagement. This would strengthen self-confidence, resilience and professional independence, provide learning opportunities for personal development, and promote supportive staff relationships.

It’s important to note that these studies all converge on the same conclusion – we need to achieve a healthy nursing workforce. It follows on that only by actively addressing challenges raised and faced by our nurses, can we strengthen the quality and safety of our healthcare.

How is International Nurses Day celebrated ?

International Nurses Day is celebrated by hospitals and medical professionals all over the world. The core of the celebrations is to honor the nurses from all over the world for their dedicated services to the society.

Medical kits are handed over to the nurses and they are also given educational material on diseases, treatment of patients etc.

Award ceremonies are held in small and large hospitals, where nurses are honored for the hard work they put in for their services. Overall, it is an opportunity to encourage, respect and enhance the knowledge of nurses.

Importance of International Nurses Day

The nurse is the most important link between a doctor and a patient. The doctor only prescribes the medicines and diagnoses the disease, but in the end, it is the nurse on whom the real responsibility of treating the patient rests. Without nursing staff, no medical facility can function even for a day. Therefore, the observation of International Nurses Day becomes even more important in view of these facts.

International Nurses Day – to remember Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale (12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was a British social reformer and nurse by profession. His role as manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War (1853–1856) was highly appreciated. As a nurse, she paid unprecedented respect to the wounded soldiers. She came to be known as ‘The Lady with the Lamp’, who wandered through the night to look after wounded soldiers.

Florence Nightingale turned nursing into a profession primarily for women. He opened the first secular nursing school in the world. It was opened at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

She was also an active social reformer and did commendable work in improving healthcare in all the British colonies including India. She was instrumental in eradicating hunger in India and amending the stringent prostitution law on women.

To commemorate the efforts of Florence Nightingale in the profession of nursing, the world community celebrates ‘International Nurses Day’ on her birthday on 12th May.

Why is International Nurses Day celebrated ?

Nurses play an extremely important role in providing first aid and basic healthcare. They are the backbone of any health system around the world. Without them, the entire healthcare system would weaken and fail to serve the needy. In fact they are the hands and eyes of doctors and other professionals. Simply because, it is clear that we understand the importance of nurses in the implementation of health services and appreciate their efforts from time to time to keep their morale high.

Every country that celebrates International Nurses Day also organizes a variety of commemorative events for nurses. Nurses are respected, appreciated and recognized for their contribution to the society. All this, keeps them closer to their oath and encourages them to go beyond their capacity to serve the society. International Nurses Day – History

The International Council of Nurses (ICN), a federation that sponsors International Nurses Day, was founded in 1899. It was the first global health professionals association of its kind. This organization is celebrating International Nurses Day as an annual event since 1965.

International Nurses Day was first proposed as a global event in 1953 by an official of the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Dorothy Sutherland. The proposal was made for the then President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower; However, the President turned down the offer.

Nevertheless, the United States observed National Nurses Week from October 11 to 16, beginning in 1954.

Following the efforts of the ICN, the 37th President of the United States, Mr. Richard Nixon, announced the observation of National Nurses Week in 1974. Following which the Council chose 12 May as the date to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

The 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, officially designated May 6 as National Nurses Day in 1990. This created a role for International Nurses Day, which is celebrated as an event to remember nurses and the nursing profession. This special day is also celebrated to honor Florence Nightingale, who is remembered as the founder of modern nursing.

Celebrations organized around the world

International Nurses Day is sponsored by the International Council of Nurses (ICN). They distribute medical kits and informational materials to nurses around the world. This day is celebrated in different ways all over the world. Here below we are telling about some of the major countries of the world where this ceremony is celebrated.

United Kingdom

Being the birth place of Florence Nightingale, the United Kingdom offers some special services to pay tribute to nurses. Westminster Abbey is a church in London, where a symbolically program of passing lamps from one nurse to another signifies the passing of wisdom. A special service is also held at St Margaret’s Church in Hampshire, where Florence Nightingale is buried.

United States of america

In the United States, a National Nursing Week is observed every year from May 6 to May 12. Similarly in Canada a National Nursing Week was established in 1985.

Australia celebrates this day by welcoming its nursing staff. On this day many award ceremonies are organized across the country, in which awards are given to selected nurses for their distinguished services in the field of healthcare.

Nurses in China celebrate International Nurses Day by holding candle marches, oath ceremonies and other events. Thousands of nurses gather at a suitable location and handle the event.

International Nurses Day is widely celebrated across India as well, in private and government hospitals. However, there are no stamp rules for the festival and every hospital or organization celebrates it in its own way. Commemorative programs for nursing staff are organized in medical colleges and hospitals, with the participation of doctors, lecturers and other persons belonging to the medical profession.

Nursing is an important profession and nurses play a vital role in patient care and implementation of health services at the grassroots level. The efficiency of government health policies and services largely depends on the nursing staff; Therefore, there is a need to boost their morale regularly through events like International Nurses Day.

International Nurses Day 2024 theme announced! Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care

The economic power of care which creates healthy people and societies and drives healthy economies, will be highlighted by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) on International Nurses’ Day (IND) 2024 under the theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care .

International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated on 12 May each year and a theme is chosen by ICN – a federation of more than 130 national nursing associations around the world, representing the over 28 million nurses working worldwide.

ICN President, Dr Pamela Cipriano explained the reasoning behind the chosen theme:

“Despite being the backbone of health care, nursing often faces financial constraints and societal undervaluation. Continuing our overarching theme Our Nurses. Our Future. and the policy actions of the ICN Charter for Change , ICN has chosen to focus IND 2024 on the economic power of care with the aim to reshape perceptions and demonstrate how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits.

We believe now is the time for a shift in perspective. We have seen time and again how financial crises often lead to budgetary restrictions in health care, typically at the expense of nursing services. This reductionist approach overlooks the substantial and often underemphasized economic value that nursing contributes to health care and society as a whole.

Policymakers, health care administrators, and even the general public are often unaware or misinformed about the return on investment that adequate funding in nursing can provide, especially in financially turbulent times such as these. Drawing from the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and recognizing the increasing threat to the health of populations around the world due to conflicts, the climate crisis and financial instability, we believe the time is right to advocate for a shift in perspective and policy.”
