This descriptive survey research design aimed to study the factors affecting involvement of students in fraternities and sororities. Using complete enumeration technique, one hundred and forty-eight (148) members of seven (7) registered fraternities and sororities in the Southern Philippines Agri-Business Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST), answered the validated researcher-made survey questionnaire. The results show that the four (4) factors; peer, personal, school and family, had an overall mean 2.6 which was recognized as a moderate description which entails that students sometimes observed these factors in joining activities related to fraternities and sororities. Furthermore, the results showed p-value of 0.0005 which meant that there was a positive significant relationship between the level of factors and the level of involvement of students in fraternities and sororities. Based on the findings, it was recommended for schools administrations to formulate programs or awareness campaigns to disseminate negative effect student’s involvement in fraternities and sororities, parents to monitor social and academic activities of children at school.

Avian influenza (serotype H5N1) is a highly pathogenic virus that emerged in domestic waterfowl in 1996. Over the past decade, zoonotic transmission to mammals, including humans, has been reported. Although human to human transmission is rare, infection has been fatal in nearly half of patients who have contracted the virus in past outbreaks. The increasing presence of the virus in domesticated animals raises substantial concerns that viral adaptation to immunologically naïve humans may result in the next flu pandemic. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to track viruses was historically used to track polio and has recently been implemented for SARS-CoV2 monitoring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, using an agnostic, hybrid-capture sequencing approach, we report the detection of H5N1 in wastewater in nine Texas cities, with a total catchment area population in the millions, over a two-month period from March 4 th to April 25 th , 2024. Sequencing reads uniquely aligning to H5N1 covered all eight genome segments, with best alignments to clade 2.3.4.4b. Notably, 19 of 23 monitored sites had at least one detection event, and the H5N1 serotype became dominant over seasonal influenza over time. A variant analysis suggests avian or bovine origin but other potential sources, especially humans, could not be excluded. We report the value of wastewater sequencing to track avian influenza.

The Document on Human Fraternity as a new step promoting a new era of dialogue : The key contribution of Pope Francis to Muslim-catholic dialogue

Profile image of Nathalie Becquart

This paper is a reflection on the Document on Human Fraternity as a major contribution of Pope Francis to Catholics-Muslims dialogue. It proposes to analyse it both as an event and a document part of a process to be understood within the context of this pontificate. It benefits from being interpreted also through the lenses of Pope Francis’s missionary vision shaped by his vision of fraternity and his experience of the Church in Latin America that puts dialogue and socio-cultural transformation of the society at his core.

The time of the coronavirus pandemic and the COVID-19 disease was an opportunity to ask anew many questions concerning interpersonal relations. In this context, Pope Francis tries to take up the therapy of fraternity in order to effectively and consistently contrast the "globalization of indifference" with the "globalization of fraternity and solidarity." The aim of this article is to show the essence of fraternity in the teaching of Pope Francis (before the publication of papal encyclical letter Fratelli tutti about fraternity) in the context of the teaching of the Catholic Church. The article presents the biblical roots of fraternity as well as its inclinations in the Magisterium of the Second Vatican Council and subsequent popes. The reinterpretation of the term "fraternity" in Francis' thought includes: the "mysticism of the fraternity," its inter-religious and social character, its global fraternity on the level of bioethics and ecology, and its connection to the "theory of contradictions" (Germ.: Gegensatz), which the Pope took from R. Guardini.

Studia Oecumenica

Przemysław Kantyka

Although the encyclical of Pope Francis Fratelli tutti does not speak directly about ecumenism, the category of fraternity developed in it can and should apply in the ecumenical movement, especially in the grassroots contacts of Christians from different Churches. Top-down ecumenism, i.e. doctrinal dialogues and meetings of Church leaders, by themselves – although necessary – are not able to bring about an effective reconciliation of Christians living in different Churches and Ecclesial Communities. The hermeneutical key proposed by Pope Francis in the form of the category of the fraternity has a wider application than ecumenical relations. The article examines the determinants of this category and its possible application to the ecumenical movement. An example of the successful application of the idea of fraternity in the activities of the International Ecumenical Fellowship is also given.

This text is concerned with the ethical approach of inter-faith relations and the dialogue of culture in two documents of Pope Francis: 'On Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together' and the encyclical Fratelli Tutti. This ethical approach refers to God the Creator of all and the call to brotherhood of all human beings and refers to faith as a response to Revelation. Faith also forms ethical approaches for interreligious dialogue. Pope Francis' approach in the documents is that the theological truth and values of religious traditions are embodied in attitudes of social friendship. Francis challenges us to build a specific environment that he calls a 'new culture of dialogue', having frequently called for the growth of a culture of encounter that is capable of transcending political and social barriers and encourages creating a specific culture of social and 'political love'.

Pope Francis’ leadership has stimulated several debates within the Catholic Church and even in larger segments of the public. One of the most prominently debated issues is the one concerning the relationship with people of different religions and, more specifically, with the world of Islam. Since 2013, the Argentinean pontiff appeared to be unambiguously committed to finding an alternative pathway to the much-publicized category of ‘clash of civilisations’, which, in the last few decades, has been the reference paradigm in Christian–Muslim relationships. Papal initiatives, gestures and journeys have consistently aimed at a ‘culture of dialogue and encounter’. Nevertheless, the present pope’s open attitude has encountered severe criticism even inside certain circles of the Catholic world, which have accused him of compromising on theological issues. However, Pope Francis is highly appreciated by leaders of other traditions, including Muslims. In the face of such debate, Bergoglio has...

Pope Francis' dialogue activities with the Muslim world have been welcomed by the majority of Muslims and covered extensively in media. His visits to Muslim countries, meetings with heads of state and official religious authorities, and encouraging Catholics for dialogue activities can contribute to world peace. This article focuses on Nostra Aetate, which is considered one of the most critical turning points in the history of Catholic-Muslim relations. This study has two arguments. The first is that Pope Francis' statements about the practice of dialogue can contribute to world peace if applied within institutions and at the grassroots. The second is that if Pope Francis' dialogue activities involve only religious leaders officially appointed by governments in the Muslim world and exclude independent religious leaders, the impact will be significantly lessened. This paper also proposes that, for fruitful dialogue activities, Catholics and Muslims should focus on moral qualities rather than theological differences.

This chapter addresses the question about the future of the Roman Catholic Church regarding ecumenical and interreligious engage- ment in light of the election of Cardinal Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, as Pope Francis. Exploring the ecumenical and interreligious background of Cardinal Bergoglio could give us some elements to intuitively map the possible outcomes of his papacy in an increasingly pluralistic and secularized worldwide context. The first section of the chapter briefly outlines the history of the ecumenical movement in Latin America, with special attention to Argentina. The second section draws from mass media and interviews with key actors within the ecumenical movement in Argentina to conclude, in the final section, with the brief descrip- tion of two challenges that Pope Francis would face as the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Including an exceptionally warm Northern Hemisphere (NH) summer 1 ,2 , 2023 has been reported as the hottest year on record 3-5 . Contextualizing recent anthropogenic warming against past natural variability is nontrivial, however, because the sparse 19 th century meteorological records tend to be too warm 6 . Here, we combine observed and reconstructed June-August (JJA) surface air temperatures to show that 2023 was the warmest NH extra-tropical summer over the past 2000 years exceeding the 95% confidence range of natural climate variability by more than half a degree Celsius. Comparison of the 2023 JJA warming against the coldest reconstructed summer in 536 CE reveals a maximum range of pre-Anthropocene-to-2023 temperatures of 3.93°C. Although 2023 is consistent with a greenhouse gases-induced warming trend 7 that is amplified by an unfolding El Niño event 8 , this extreme emphasizes the urgency to implement international agreements for carbon emission reduction.
