McKinsey technology trends outlook 2024
Despite challenging overall market conditions in 2023, continuing investments in frontier technologies promise substantial future growth in enterprise adoption. Generative AI (gen AI) has been a standout trend since 2022, with the extraordinary uptick in interest and investment in this technology unlocking innovative possibilities across interconnected trends such as robotics and immersive reality. While the macroeconomic environment with elevated interest rates has affected equity capital investment and hiring, underlying indicators—including optimism, innovation, and longer-term talent needs—reflect a positive long-term trajectory in the 15 technology trends we analyzed.
What’s new in this year’s analysis
This year, we reflected the shifts in the technology landscape with two changes on the list of trends: digital trust and cybersecurity (integrating what we had previously described as Web3 and trust architectures) and the future of robotics. Robotics technologies’ synergy with AI is paving the way for groundbreaking innovations and operational shifts across the economic and workforce landscapes. We also deployed a survey to measure adoption levels across trends.
These are among the findings in the latest McKinsey Technology Trends Outlook, in which the McKinsey Technology Council identified the most significant technology trends unfolding today. This research is intended to help executives plan ahead by developing an understanding of potential use cases, sources of value, adoption drivers, and the critical skills needed to bring these opportunities to fruition.
Our analysis examines quantitative measures of interest, innovation, investment, and talent to gauge the momentum of each trend. Recognizing the long-term nature and interdependence of these trends, we also delve into the underlying technologies, uncertainties, and questions surrounding each trend. (For more about new developments in our research, please see the sidebar “What’s new in this year’s analysis”; for more about the research itself, please see the sidebar “Research methodology.”)
New and notable
The two trends that stood out in 2023 were gen AI and electrification and renewables. Gen AI has seen a spike of almost 700 percent in Google searches from 2022 to 2023, along with a notable jump in job postings and investments. The pace of technology innovation has been remarkable. Over the course of 2023 and 2024, the size of the prompts that large language models (LLMs) can process, known as “context windows,” spiked from 100,000 to two million tokens. This is roughly the difference between adding one research paper to a model prompt and adding about 20 novels to it. And the modalities that gen AI can process have continued to increase, from text summarization and image generation to advanced capabilities in video, images, audio, and text. This has catalyzed a surge in investments and innovation aimed at advancing more powerful and efficient computing systems. The large foundation models that power generative AI, such as LLMs, are being integrated into various enterprise software tools and are also being employed for diverse purposes such as powering customer-facing chatbots, generating ad campaigns, accelerating drug discovery, and more. We expect this expansion to continue, pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities. Senior leaders’ awareness of gen AI innovation has increased interest, investment, and innovation in AI technologies, such as robotics, which is a new addition to our trends analysis this year. Advancements in AI are ushering in a new era of more capable robots, spurring greater innovation and a wider range of deployments.
Research methodology
To assess the development of each technology trend, our team collected data on five tangible measures of activity: search engine queries, news publications, patents, research publications, and investment. For each measure, we used a defined set of data sources to find occurrences of keywords associated with each of the 15 trends, screened those occurrences for valid mentions of activity, and indexed the resulting numbers of mentions on a 0–1 scoring scale that is relative to the trends studied. The innovation score combines the patents and research scores; the interest score combines the news and search scores. (While we recognize that an interest score can be inflated by deliberate efforts to stimulate news and search activity, we believe that each score fairly reflects the extent of discussion and debate about a given trend.) Investment measures the flows of funding from the capital markets into companies linked with the trend.
Data sources for the scores include the following:
- Patents. Data on patent filings are sourced from Google Patents, where the data highlight the number of granted patents.
- Research. Data on research publications are sourced from Lens.
- News. Data on news publications are sourced from Factiva.
- Searches. Data on search engine queries are sourced from Google Trends.
- Investment. Data on private-market and public-market capital raises (venture capital and corporate and strategic M&A, including joint ventures), private equity (including buyouts and private investment in public equity), and public investments (including IPOs) are sourced from PitchBook.
- Talent demand. Number of job postings is sourced from McKinsey’s proprietary Organizational Data Platform, which stores licensed, de-identified data on professional profiles and job postings. Data are drawn primarily from English-speaking countries.
In addition, we updated the selection and definition of trends from last year’s report to reflect the evolution of technology trends:
- The future of robotics trend was added since last year’s publication.
- Data sources and keywords were updated. For data on the future of space technologies investments, we used research from McKinsey’s Aerospace & Defense Practice.
Finally, we used survey data to calculate the enterprise-wide adoption scores for each trend:
- Survey scope. The survey included approximately 1,000 respondents from 50 countries.
- Geographical coverage. Survey representation was balanced across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America.
- Company size. Size categories, based on annual revenue, included small companies ($10 million to $50 million), medium-size companies ($50 million to $1 billion), and large companies (greater than $1 billion).
- Respondent profile. The survey was targeted to senior-level professionals knowledgeable in technology, who reported their perception of the extent to which their organizations were using the technologies.
- Survey method. The survey was conducted online to enhance reach and accessibility.
- Question types. The survey employed multiple-choice and open-ended questions for comprehensive insights.
- 1: Frontier innovation. This technology is still nascent, with few organizations investing in or applying it. It is largely untested and unproven in a business context.
- 2: Experimentation. Organizations are testing the functionality and viability of the technology with a small-scale prototype, typically done without a strong focus on a near-term ROI. Few companies are scaling or have fully scaled the technology.
- 3: Piloting. Organizations are implementing the technology for the first few business use cases. It may be used in pilot projects or limited deployments to test its feasibility and effectiveness.
- 4: Scaling. Organizations are in the process of scaling the deployment and adoption of the technology across the enterprise. The technology is being scaled by a significant number of companies.
- 5: Fully scaled. Organizations have fully deployed and integrated the technology across the enterprise. It has become the standard and is being used at a large scale as companies have recognized the value and benefits of the technology.
Electrification and renewables was the other trend that bucked the economic headwinds, posting the highest investment and interest scores among all the trends we evaluated. Job postings for this sector also showed a modest increase.
Although many trends faced declines in investment and hiring in 2023, the long-term outlook remains positive. This optimism is supported by the continued longer-term growth in job postings for the analyzed trends (up 8 percent from 2021 to 2023) and enterprises’ continued innovation and heightened interest in harnessing these technologies, particularly for future growth.
In 2023, technology equity investments fell by 30 to 40 percent to approximately $570 billion due to rising financing costs and a cautious near-term growth outlook, prompting investors to favor technologies with strong revenue and margin potential. This approach aligns with the strategic perspective leading companies are adopting, in which they recognize that fully adopting and scaling cutting-edge technologies is a long-term endeavor. This recognition is evident when companies diversify their investments across a portfolio of several technologies, selectively intensifying their focus on areas most likely to push technological boundaries forward. While many technologies have maintained cautious investment profiles over the past year, gen AI saw a sevenfold increase in investments, driven by substantial advancements in text, image, and video generation.

Despite an overall downturn in private equity investment, the pace of innovation has not slowed. Innovation has accelerated in the three trends that are part of the “AI revolution” group: gen AI, applied AI, and industrializing machine learning. Gen AI creates new content from unstructured data (such as text and images), applied AI leverages machine learning models for analytical and predictive tasks, and industrializing machine learning accelerates and derisks the development of machine learning solutions. Applied AI and industrializing machine learning, boosted by the widening interest in gen AI, have seen the most significant uptick in innovation, reflected in the surge in publications and patents from 2022 to 2023. Meanwhile, electrification and renewable-energy technologies continue to capture high interest, reflected in news mentions and web searches. Their popularity is fueled by a surge in global renewable capacity, their crucial roles in global decarbonization efforts, and heightened energy security needs amid geopolitical tensions and energy crises.
The talent environment largely echoed the investment picture in tech trends in 2023. The technology sector faced significant layoffs, particularly among large technology companies, with job postings related to the tech trends we studied declining by 26 percent—a steeper drop than the 17 percent decrease in global job postings overall. The greater decline in demand for tech-trends-related talent may have been fueled by technology companies’ cost reduction efforts amid decreasing revenue growth projections. Despite this reduction, the trends with robust investment and innovation, such as gen AI, not only maintained but also increased their job postings, reflecting a strong demand for new and advanced skills. Electrification and renewables was the other trend that saw positive job growth, partially due to public sector support for infrastructure spending.
Even with the short-term vicissitudes in talent demand, our analysis of 4.3 million job postings across our 15 tech trends underscored a wide skills gap. Compared with the global average, fewer than half the number of potential candidates have the high-demand tech skills specified in job postings. Despite the year-on-year decreases for job postings in many trends from 2022 to 2023, the number of tech-related job postings in 2023 still represented an 8 percent increase from 2021, suggesting the potential for longer-term growth (Exhibit 1).
Enterprise technology adoption momentum
The trajectory of enterprise technology adoption is often described as an S-curve that traces the following pattern: technical innovation and exploration, experimenting with the technology, initial pilots in the business, scaling the impact throughout the business, and eventual fully scaled adoption (Exhibit 2). This pattern is evident in this year’s survey analysis of enterprise adoption conducted across our 15 technologies. Adoption levels vary across different industries and company sizes, as does the perceived progress toward adoption.
Image description:
A graph depicts the adoption curve of technology trends, scored from 1 to 5, where 1 represents frontier innovation, located at the bottom left corner of the curve; 2 is experimenting, located slightly above frontier innovation; 3 is piloting, which follows the upward trajectory of the curve; 4 is scaling, marked by a vertical ascent as adoption increases; and 5 is fully scaled, positioned at the top of the curve, indicating near-complete adoption.
In 2023, the trends are positioned along the adoption curve as follows: future of space technologies and quantum technologies are at the frontier innovation stage; climate technologies beyond electrification and renewables, future of bioengineering, future of mobility, future of robotics, and immersive-reality technologies are at the experimenting stage; digital trust and cybersecurity, electrification and renewables, industrializing machine learning, and next-gen software development are at the piloting stage; and advanced connectivity, applied AI, cloud and edge computing, and generative AI are at the scaling stage.
Footnote: Trend is more relevant to certain industries, resulting in lower overall adoption across industries compared with adoption within relevant industries.
Source: McKinsey technology adoption survey data
End of image description.
We see that the technologies in the S-curve’s early stages of innovation and experimenting are either on the leading edge of progress, such as quantum technologies and robotics, or are more relevant to a specific set of industries, such as bioengineering and space. Factors that could affect the adoption of these technologies include high costs, specialized applications, and balancing the breadth of technology investments against focusing on a select few that may offer substantial first-mover advantages.
As technologies gain traction and move beyond experimenting, adoption rates start accelerating, and companies invest more in piloting and scaling. We see this shift in a number of trends, such as next-generation software development and electrification. Gen AI’s rapid advancement leads among trends analyzed, about a quarter of respondents self-reporting that they are scaling its use. More mature technologies, like cloud and edge computing and advanced connectivity, continued their rapid pace of adoption, serving as enablers for the adoption of other emerging technologies as well (Exhibit 3).
A segmented bar graph shows the adoption levels of tech trends in 2023 as a percentage of respondents. The trends are divided into 5 segments, comprising 100%: fully scaled, scaling, piloting, experimenting, and not investing. The trends are arranged based on the combined percentage sum of fully scaled and scaling shares. Listed from highest to lowest, these combined percentages are as follows:
- cloud and edge computing at 48%
- advanced connectivity at 37%
- generative AI at 36%
- applied AI at 35%
- next-generation software development at 31%
- digital trust and cybersecurity at 30%
- electrification and renewables at 28%
- industrializing machine learning at 27%
- future of mobility at 21%
- climate technologies beyond electrification and renewables at 20%
- immersive-reality technologies at 19%
- future of bioengineering at 18%
- future of robotics at 18%
- quantum technologies at 15%
- future of space technologies at 15%
The process of scaling technology adoption also requires a conducive external ecosystem where user trust and readiness, business model economics, regulatory environments, and talent availability play crucial roles. Since these ecosystem factors vary by geography and industry, we see different adoption scenarios playing out. For instance, while the leading banks in Latin America are on par with their North American counterparts in deploying gen AI use cases, the adoption of robotics in manufacturing sectors varies significantly due to differing labor costs affecting the business case for automation.
As executives navigate these complexities, they should align their long-term technology adoption strategies with both their internal capacities and the external ecosystem conditions to ensure the successful integration of new technologies into their business models. Executives should monitor ecosystem conditions that can affect their prioritized use cases to make decisions about the appropriate investment levels while navigating uncertainties and budgetary constraints on the way to full adoption (see the “Adoption developments across the globe” sections within each trend or particular use cases therein that executives should monitor). Across the board, leaders who take a long-term view—building up their talent, testing and learning where impact can be found, and reimagining the businesses for the future—can potentially break out ahead of the pack.

10 Breakthrough Technologies 2024
Every year, we look for promising technologies poised to have a real impact on the world. Here are the advances that we think matter most right now.
AI for everything
We now live in the age of AI. Hundreds of millions of people have interacted directly with generative tools like ChatGPT that produce text, images, videos, and more from prompts. Their popularity has reshaped the tech industry, making OpenAI a household name and compelling Google, Meta, and Microsoft to invest heavily in the technology.
Super-efficient solar cells
Solar power is being rapidly deployed around the world, and it’s key to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. But most of the sunlight that hits today’s panels isn’t being converted into electricity. Adding a layer of tiny crystals could make solar panels more efficient.
Apple Vision Pro
Apple will start shipping its first mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, this year. Its killer feature is the highest-resolution display ever made for such a device. Will there be a killer app? It’s early, but the world’s most valuable company has made a bold bet that the answer is yes.

Weight-loss drugs.
The global rise in obesity has been called an epidemic by the World Health Organization. Medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy are now among the most powerful tools that patients and physicians have to treat it. Evidence suggests they can even protect against heart attacks and strokes.
Enhanced geothermal systems
Geothermal energy is clean, always available, and virtually limitless. However, because of engineering challenges, we have barely scratched the surface of what it can offer. New drilling techniques, which dig deeper and in places where we couldn’t before, are unleashing more of Earth’s heat to produce clean energy.
It’s getting devilishly hard to make transistors smaller—the trend that defines Moore’s Law and has driven progress in computing for decades. Engineers must now find new ways to make computers faster and more efficient. Chiplets are small, specialized chips that can be linked together to do everything a conventional chip does, and more.

Something went wrong, try again., the first gene-editing treatment.
New treatments based on CRISPR have been in the works for years. In the final weeks of 2023, one from Vertex became the first to earn regulatory approval in both the UK and the US for its ability to cure sickle-cell disease, a life-threatening condition. It won’t be the last.
Exascale computers
The world’s fastest supercomputers can now perform more than an exaflop’s worth of calculations (that’s a 1 followed by 18 zeros). New machines that can crunch scientific data at these speeds will enable scientists to perform more sophisticated simulations of the climate, nuclear fission, turbulence, and more.
Don’t let the name fool you. Heat pumps are electric appliances that can both cool and heat buildings, and wider adoption could substantially reduce emissions. Sales have increased around the world; in the US, they have surpassed gas furnaces for the first time. New types that run at higher temperatures could help decarbonize industry, too.
Twitter killers
Elon Musk bought the site now known as X in 2022, and virtually nothing about it has been the same since. He fired most of the staff and dispensed with content moderation, scaring off advertisers and users alike. Now, as alternatives like Bluesky, Threads, and others gain ground, the central town square has given way to private rooms.

Current and Future Presentation Technology
November 14, 2018 - Dom Barnard
The pace of technology development has increased dramatically over the last few years. How presentations are designed, built and delivered has also changed, with increased audience interaction, product demos, immersive slides and non-linear storytelling.
Presentations can take many forms, from small meeting room pitches to large keynote presentations launching new products. With the advances in presentation software , we are no longer limited to basic PowerPoints; instead we have software such as Prezi, live audience polling apps and technology to practice presentations in virtual reality.
In this article, we look at how technology will change the way presentations are delivered and created, covering technology trends such as augmented reality and embedded 3D models.
Current presentation technology
1. html5 presentations.
With HTML5 , you can build presentations without paid software such as PowerPoint and Keynote. HTML5 is very flexible and feature filled, allowing you to build beautiful presentations with it.
Although HTML5 requires some coding knowledge, companies and educational organizations have begun adopting this method of presentation creation.

2. Simulations and immersive technology
Designers can now create life-like objects and customized visual environment with virtual reality and augmented reality, which audiences can interact with.
This would allow people watching the presentation remotely (e.g. during a keynote) to actually interact with the presentation by, for example, putting on a VR headset and being teleported inside the simulation which is being talked about.
3. Product demos
Product demos can be the heart of a presentation. Many of the largest and best known presentations included a demo (iPhone, Microsoft Surface Pro, iPad, Google Glass, etc.).
With improved streaming capabilities, demos are becoming more popular, with the presenter usually streaming the device screen to a larger projector so the audience can see what the presenter is doing.

4. Improved engagement
Presentations nowadays adopt a conversational and interactive approach, instead of the audience just listening to the presenter for an hour. Often the presenter will ask questions of the audience and encourage them to get involved in the presentation, leading to higher knowledge retention rates.
Here are some ways to increase audience interaction :
- Ask the audience questions
- Use storytelling methods
- Use non-linear presentation software
- Add in videos
- Poll the audience
- Use live quizzes
- Use a writing service to review your presentation

5. Animations, graphics, and cinemographs
Animations can make dull presentations more visual and interesting. In addition, cinemographs (still photographs in which a minor and repeated movement occurs, forming a video clip) can captivate the audience’s attention, making them particularly popular in blog articles in the form of animated GIFs.
High-quality graphics with attention-grabbing photos, typography and fonts are being used to facilitate audience attention and immerse the user in the presentation.
6. Colors to evoke emotions
Warm, rich and modern colors should be used to influence and manipulate audience emotions and psychology. Newer color trends promote the improvement of audience engagements, such that colors used should invoke the chosen emotion the presenter wants to invoke.

Future presentation technology
1. augmented reality – enhance the world around you.
For some time now, augmented reality has been used in presentations . As AR headsets improve in quality and reduce in price, we’ll see them being utilized much more in presentations.
Augmented reality can make static images and data come alive with animations and graphics. AR allows your audience to explore data, locations, stories and much more in a realistic way, putting them inside the story and presentation.
Imagine a product design presentation to directors of a company. Augmented reality allows the directors to visualize the product in the meeting room with them, where they can interact with it as they would the real product.
One limitation with this, particularly at large conferences, is that every audience member would require an AR headset – which currently cost several thousand dollars. The price will reduce in the future but currently this is a key limitation of the technology.
2. Virtual reality – teleport to a new virtual world
With over 100 million virtual reality users in 2018 , virtual reality (VR) has become a popular way to enhance people’s digital experience. Initially used for gaming, VR is expanding out into the training, collaboration and presentation sectors, where the audience can be teleported to a virtual world – an amazing way to tell immersive stories.
Studies have shown that visualizing a situation increases memory retention. In this way, VR will help audience members retain what is being told , leaving them with a truly memorable experience.
As with AR, audience members can even interact with each other in the virtual world. Software such as BigScreen, AltSpace and Facebook Spaces have shown the power of group interaction, something that could be leveraged well for presentations.
Companies are already experimenting with VR meetings and presentations and will be very exciting so see where this leads – will it end up replacing Skype and other VOIP / video presentation software?
3. Embedding 3D models
3D models have been used for years now but as a result of better accessibility with PowerPoint’s 3D functionality, presenters can show all the possible perspectives of a product to be designed.
This is an important development for Computer Aided Design teams and designers in general. Being able to present 3D models to colleagues and stakeholders in an understandable way is important for the review process.
4. A seamless presentation
The rapport between presenters, their audience and their presentation is crucial. Information being presented on the screen needs to correspond with the presenter’s body language and speech.
Devices such as Leap Motion controllers allow presenters to advance slides, control transition between slides or zoom slides by tracking hand, finger and muscle movements. This technology will become an important part of future presentations.
Myo armband on the woman’s right arm being used to change presentation slides.
5. Audience interaction with your presentation
Technology will change how your presentation audience interact with the presentation, including how they ask questions, make suggestions, contribute to polls and discuss your presentation online.
Technology can allow anyone in the world to watch and interact with your presentation – future technology may even reduce the need to people to meet up in-person, with online and interaction tools being so powerful. This will reduce travel emissions and wasted travel time – both areas employees and companies are keen to reduce.
- Read tips of Giving effective virtual presentations
Devices like Canva Live allow audience members to remotely follow presentations on their smartphones, tablets or computers so they can watch closely as the presenter interacts with slides (zooming in or out) and contribute to polls or live questions and answers.
Based on our predictions of how presentations will look over the next five years, technology will no doubt play a huge role in all aspects of presentations, from preparation to delivery.
However, it’s worth remembering that technology is there to enhance the presentation, not replace you as the speaker. Technology helps to keep the audience engaged and improve understanding of your communicated message.

As President of APUS, Nuno Fernandes is focused on making online higher education more affordable and accessible.
It is all too common today to hear that technology is changing the nature of what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence (AI) in particular is frequently portrayed to be a dangerous and fast-moving current, utterly transforming anything that crosses its path. The change happening is dramatic, for sure, but perhaps it’s not the negation of humanity. Perhaps it’s a Rubicon we must cross to access the next level of our shared human potential.
Higher Education is one of the sectors where this possibility is more significant and urgent than ever. We are long overdue for transformation. In 20 centuries, the Roman Empire fell and many others appeared and disappeared. Humanity learned that the earth was round, discovered new planetary systems, went to the moon, cured many diseases, and grew from 170 million to about 8 billion.
But if we compare the teaching process today to what occurred 1,000 years ago, we see that it has remained practically the same: A teacher speaks, a student listens. This has little to do with the use of technology; the teaching concept has not evolved over time.
The technological revolution is forcing all sectors to transform and it is time to incorporate the tremendous power of technology and AI into higher education. Are we up to the challenge? Yes. We must take it on. We owe it to our current and future students—the reason we do what we do.
Education is considered a shared public good, and we have to remember that our key mission is to deliver high quality education to support students in their next chapter.
There is a fundamentally human component of teaching that technology will never supplant. But is it possible that technology can enhance and expand the reach and impact of education? Most certainly. It already is.
Here at American Public University System, we have an unwavering commitment to academic excellence as an open-access institution focused on providing online higher education to learners of all backgrounds.
Our approximate 90,000 active students have access to some 200 affordable programs and we work with over 150 business partners to offer re-training and reskilling opportunities to their employees.
We embrace and welcome technology; we want our students to harness its power, too. But we also realize we need to do more.
Relevance in digital transformation lies not in the technology itself but in how the technology enables change in delivery models to make them more agile, competitive, differentiated and capable of exceeding consumer expectations. Imagine a future where AI could enable universities to create a customized course for each student, designed to maximize learning experiences and the competencies they want to develop. We have to be ready for tomorrow by embracing progress today.
I strongly believe that a significant driver of transformation in the higher education sector will be pressure from the labor market. Essentially, the value of a university degree corresponds to the value that the market recognizes for that degree.
Some suggest in the near future that careers will become shorter , and many professionals will have to continue to educate and retrain themselves as they transition from one job to another. We already see this at our university, where 91% of our students are working professionals, many of whom are engaged in retraining programs, are active-duty military, or retired military pursuing degrees to help them in their next chapters.
I believe higher education will only see significant disruption once the labor market fully recognizes and pays for a different type of education and/or demands competencies that do not exist today. Our industry needs a catalyst to prompt this change. Once that happens, new jobs will arise, and those who can identify and address these needs by educating themselves will be the winners.
Here are some things academic leaders can do to better prepare for this revolution:
Be open about AI.
Just as some opposed the use of calculators in the 1970s before they became acceptable, AI faces its own set of challenges. For these reasons and more, it’s on us as academic leaders to take full responsibility and openly discuss what is possible. A large part of its success depends on you constantly engaging with others to ethically and responsibly promote AI’s adoption. This means having a solid AI policy implemented for faculty and students so that rules are clear from the outset. These policies must be adhered to, and enforced, in order for them to benefit the university.
Ensure agile leadership is in place.
If you want to excel and set yourself apart from the thousands of other universities, you have to make sure that your peers and colleagues are excited about innovation. Make no mistake, this is not easy. Nor should it be, for that matter. But having talented provosts, deans and department chairs aligned on important decisions is key to acheiving success.
Walk, don’t run.
Start with a pilot program before engaging in full adoption. You may consider test groups for rolling out technology in controlled environments, for example. But even before you reach that milestone, a great starting point is to study what other universities are doing here—and then do it better yourself. That means not only learning from best practices, but also knowing enough to avoid potential pitfalls down the road.
Now is the time to imagine education in new ways. To rethink the possibilities. As visionaries and innovators, we can’t limit our vision by what is, but always amplify it by what it could be. We need to consider tomorrow, and maybe even the day after that.
“If you don’t like change, you’ll like irrelevance even less.” –Eric Shinseki

Presentation Management 26: The Future of Presentations
Original content by AlexAnndra Ontra and James Ontra Enhanced by Geetesh Bajaj
In the previous part of this Presentation Management series of posts, we explored how you can organize content for story presentations . In this part, we look at how the presentations of the future will work.
If you think about it, over the past century humans have been forced to adapt to technology and the structure it creates. It’s not “normal” to work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or write by typing on a QWERTY keyboard. Presentations are another example. We create linear slide decks, then conform our work conversations to the deck because that’s the way the technology works, by showing us one slide at a time, in order. It’s not the way we’d naturally talk and discuss a topic, but if we want to use technology, we have to do it technology’s way.
In this century, technology is increasingly conforming to the way humans do things. Like, we can talk to our devices instead of tapping on a tiny screen. Presentations are moving that way, too. In fact, it is the biggest change in the nature of business presentations since the advent of PowerPoint. For the first time, the technology and the linear presentation deck will no longer dictate the conversation and interaction.
Instead, the conversation will dictate the presentation. Thanks to voice recognition and artificial intelligence, the next generation of presentation technology will listen to what’s being said, comprehend the context in the room, know what visual content is available in the approved presentation management system, and automatically and instantly bring up visuals that fit the conversation at that moment. It’s almost like having a personal assistant at your side, listening and watching the room, and instantly finding and showing images that are exactly what’s needed in-the-moment.
How it Happens?
How would technology like that work in practice? Imagine this scenario:
- The CEO of a major cruise line is speaking at a travel conference in an auditorium that only seats 100 people. He cues up his presentation management app, and projects slide content on the big screen and a few monitors inside the auditorium, as well as outside in the hallway and all around the convention center. Anyone who sees it, either sitting in the live audience, walking by one of those monitors, or browsing on a website, can participate in his presentation. They can log in to the presentation on their own phone or another device. After all, they have full A/V on their phone, where they can hear his presentation and see his slides.
- Someone in the audience raises his hand and asks a question that everyone in the audience, whether they are physically sitting in the auditorium or have logged in from 1,000 miles away, can hear.
- Can you tell me more about cruises to Alaska?
- As the voice-recognition technology processes the words in the question, AI starts to sort through the speaker’s presentation library, which includes all content about the cruise line.
- Up pops slides with visual support for the question. The audience will see pictures of the Kenai Fjords, snow-capped mountains, and a luxurious cruise ship, with every pampering amenity you could imagine, sailing through it all. It’s conversational AI broadcast to the entire world.
Presentations will become more dynamic, more fluid, more like the human thought process. And the technology we use for presentations will become an afterthought.
And this is right around the corner – the way presentations will be within a few years. Voice-recognition technology is exploding. In a few years, it is estimated that over half of all searches will be powered by speech instead of keyboard input, according to comScore. That means that during an interactive presentation, the technology can listen to the audience’s comments and questions. Those questions and comments will prompt a search. Suggestions for slides to present will appear based on the conversation as it unfolds.
That technology will expand with Predictive Slides™ . Your presentation management app will offer slide suggestions based on a range of variables, such as who you are, the last slides you used, the slides your colleagues used, the audience, the most popular slides, and on and on. Companies will be able to customize those variables based on the individual user, and the presentation will be created based on those inputs and variables. It’s similar to how shopping on Amazon works. Amazon presents products based on your purchase and browsing history. Your presentation management app will present slides in a similar way.
Uisng Predictive Slides™
There has been a gap of so much time since AlexAnndra Ontra and James Ontra authored the book that’s being made more visual and serialized . In technology terms, this span of time could be termed as one generation. So, I was curious about how the Predictive Slides™ technology has evolved, especially since the world has been gripped by a pandemic in that same period of time. Let’s hear it from James, who kindly shared some thoughts.
Geetesh: James, will this Predictive Slides™ technology be built into Shufflrr?
If you’ve used Netflix or a similar media platform, you’ll find similarities. Netflix is an onscreen design that works like a slide. If you’re looking at your TV, you’ll find that Netflix is essentially a slide with navigation. And they are pulling up more slides behind the scenes as you click on an option. Over a period of time, they have studied usage patterns, including your preferences, and can recommend related shows.
With related shows, they may have noticed that you like horse racing. Therefore, there will be a recommendation for another horse racing show. They may also notice that users who watch horse racing also like leather clothing. So, artificial intelligence is helping them address your needs better.
We used to collect thousands of presentation slides for conventions, where people put them on their podiums and spoke. So, the AI in Predictive Slides™ can provide a few selected slides that might be relevant to what you said, and then you pick the one you want. And your picked-up slide comes up next. This is what we call “the presentation following the conversation”.
This will also work at the slide level. Based on the user’s input and criteria, slides will pull information from different databases to create a specific slide for one specific instance. For example, a financial adviser is meeting with his client. Today, he searches several different databases to review that client’s portfolio, credit card debt, stock positions, and IRAs, as well as age, income, and stated financial goals.
With all that information culled together, the adviser will then input that into another database to get suggestions for changes to the portfolio. And then, the adviser, or his admin, will create a nice slideshow. That’s labor-intensive and prone to lots of human errors. In the future, all of this data will feed directly into a formatted, branded slide … visualized and ready to present.
Predictive Slides™ can be generated before the meeting or during the meeting, as the conversation progresses.
During the meeting, the slides themselves will be created according to verbal inputs based on what people are saying:
- Imagine the financial adviser is meeting with that client for the first time. He discusses the client’s current financial status, her salary, her credit cards, mortgage, age, expenses, and goals for her retirement.
- As the client speaks, the presentation app is accessing various financial databases to build her portfolio and then creates the slides on the fly.
- The adviser and the client review the presentation together. The operative word in this is scenario is together . The adviser is not presenting to, or talking at, the client. He’s discussing the financial plan with her. She’s responding, and the presentation is updating according to her immediate feedback. So the adviser can focus on the client, not the slides.
- The slides fall to the background while the two parties make a human connection, fostering trust and building a better relationship. They learn more about each other. The adviser not only gets a better understanding of his client’s financial goals, which is the purpose of the meeting but also of her personal life, which certainly affects her finances.
- In the process, the client starts to trust her adviser and starts to see him as someone genuinely interested in helping her achieve her financial goals. After all, that’s what usually happens when you break down barriers and just start talking with someone.
- As a result, the adviser is in a better position to help his client, because he knows more about her, and the client gets a better financial plan. It may sound ironic, but presentation technology will encourage human connection.
Advances in technology will free us from the very technology to which we’ve become so addicted. Hardware continues to get smaller and cheaper. You will be able to access your presentations from your phone, your watch, and maybe even your glasses. Smaller devices will become ubiquitous, and as that happens they will also fall into the background. A watch is an accessory, it’s not the outfit. Look around today and you’ll see most people glued to a screen, clicking, searching, and scrolling through data, scrolling through slides. AI and voice recognition will flip that dynamic. As the searching and scrolling through data is done for us — as it follows our voice commands and conversations — we get freed from our devices.
When our eyes are separated from a screen and our hands are freed from a keyboard, we are back in control of our lives. We can look up and around. Look at our friend, our business partner, the other people in the room. We can see them, talk with them and, above all, make a real connection with them. This is important in business, where having the latest gadget is a status symbol, but it’s also a distraction. Everyone is so busy checking out your new Apple Watch that they forget about doing the new budget allocations. And it’s even more important at the dinner table, where everyone is interacting with their phones instead of each other. Advances in AI, voice recognition, and presentation technology will correct technology’s worst flaws. They will free us from the devices and apps to which we’ve become enslaved, empower us to be more productive in our daily jobs, and above all allow us to connect with each other in a more meaningful way and form stronger bonds. That’s progress.
The next part will conclude this series .
Presentation Management Series: All Posts
First, try and answer these questions. Feel free to read the post again if needed. Then, scroll down to below the author profiles to find the answers.
Q1: For the first time, the technology and the linear presentation deck will no longer dictate the conversation and interaction. Instead, the conversation will dictate the presentation. How true are these observations?
- Could be true, but may possible very far in the future
- Figment of someone’s imagination
- Truer and closer to happening than many may have imagined
- Truth is stranger than fiction
Q2: What is the name of the technology from Shufflrr that will generate content before the meeting or during the meeting, as the conversation progresses?
At Shufflrr, Alex advises Shufflrr clients through the process: from trial to content architecture, through the launch, training, and then on-going software upgrades. She’s hands-on. She is a leading expert in presentation management strategy, implementation, and adaptation.
His vision and strategy have been driving Presentation Management to become a recognized communication discipline. James combined this passion with technical development to build Shufflrr. Presentation Management is smart communication strategy.
Geetesh believes that any PowerPoint presentation is a sum of its elements–these elements include abstract elements like story, consistency, and interactivity — and also slide elements like shapes, graphics, charts, text, sound, video, and animation. He explains how these elements work together in his training sessions. He has also authored six books on PowerPoint and Microsoft Office.
