Lillith - movie review.
Beware! Here thar be DEMONS who will do more than suck upon your bones! Well, it rhymes with suck at the very least.
This is the unholy territory of not-so sorority heartbreak when one forlorn college student, Jenna Collins (Nell Kessler), finds herself summoning a demon with her tampon after she discovers that her boyfriend has been seeing other people behind her back. Pushed to her limits by his narcissism, she goes to her friends for support and they know exactly what to do!
Punish Brad ( Michael Finnigan ) for his infidelity with BLACK MAGIC courtesy of a sex-obsessed demon, Lillith ( Savannah Whitten ), with murder on her mind! What could possibly go wrong?!
Lillith begins with Professor Hardy ( Langston Fishburne ) writing the word “demons'' on a chalkboard. He then explains their sole purpose in life is to antagonize, torment, and drag their targets straight into misery. Thus, the seed for a succubi is planted as Emma ( Robin Carolyn Parent ) must convince Jenna to call upon Hell itself in order to get the revenge she so desperately wants and believes she needs.
Let the horror and the hilarity begin as Lillith’s rampage among all the big and sweaty dudes on the campus threatens to wipe out the dorms!
Directed by Lee Esposito and co-written by Luke Stannard, Lillith makes good use of its limited budget with solid effects and practical gore. The cast creates earnest characters, too. All of which makes this independent horror flick work a bit better than it probably ought to considering some of its familiar beats. There might be nothing new here, but the occasional comedy makes up for that aspect.
Featuring performances from Chrissie Capobianco and Julia Arden Rock, Lillith will be unleashed in the USA by Terror Films On-Demand and Digital on July 9th 2021.
The devil made me do it again and again and again!

‘Lilli’ | Film Review
Lilli is an Indian survival thriller about a hostage named – guess what – Lilli. I’ve not got much experience of Indian films (two films and one Indian TV show), but the very word leads me to expect something flamboyant, low-budget or both. This was different: a gritty plot, with an unpolished set and above average acting… oh, and violence.
Lilli is not a Bollywood film, but “Mollywood”, with all dialogue in Malayalam rather than Hindi. I don’t know if the characteristics above are typical of Mollywood (this is the first such I’ve watched), but I get the feeling writer/director Prasobh Vijayan is pushing the envelope somewhat, especially with the violence.
Anyway, there is plenty to like about Lilli , despite a number of flaws. First, the story: times are tough in the home of Lilli (Samyuktha Menon) and Ajith (Aaryan Krishna Menon), but they are expecting their first baby in a couple of weeks and are happily getting by. Late one night, Lilli gets a phone call saying her husband has been in an accident, and she goes out to find him… only to be grabbed by three strange men, who ask her the whereabouts of a girl. The remainder of the film is about her attempts to resist and escape from this captivity, and the mystery of why she is being put through this ordeal.
As well as the main plot, there are a couple of minor plot strands about a man on the run who tries to help Lilli, about the economic situation in the country, and in flashbacks, what led to this incarceration. Lilli’s plot is a simple (and unoriginal) one, though it really could have done without those extra subplots: simple is fine when executed well. And it is indeed made well. Something about the quality of the acting and production reminded me of Satan’s Slaves ; not sure if it was the believable setting, the everyday characters or the sharp cinematography… probably a combination.
Lilli and her husband, when introduced at the beginning, made a strikingly believable pair; and their conversations of hope and home economics only reinforced that. Samyuktha Menon made an excellent lead as Lilli herself in her first screen part: even when some of the action was a little incredible, she carried it well. Oh and talking of carrying, her pregnancy was quite realistic too (though I understand it was a prosthetic). The other characters were largely two dimensional, and the actors who played them unremarkable: the three kidnappers, for example, were simply a leader, a lech and a guy with a conscience (though otherwise, they were quite like the kidnappers in Trust ).
As for the cinematography, which I’ve already alluded to… Lighting is well used in every scene, and there is plenty of it: after the initial trap, Lilli is largely set in broad daylight. There are some lovely wide and high shots which show the depth of isolation she is kept in. This contrasts with an easy going scene much earlier following a butterfly in her home. The camera doesn’t get too close to the violence when it happens (which is how this film avoided a horror label, I reckon): there are no explicit wound shots; rather the camera shows the result of the blows and the face of the one doing it. The film is certainly bloody and does not shy away from showing violent acts, but it doesn’t dwell on a gory outcome.
The score, by Sushin Shyam, is subtle and very well arranged. It fits with the film very well, and I’m now on the lookout for more with this young name attached. Another stark contrast with other Indian thrillers or horrors I’ve seen, with melodramatic music.
You know, I wonder why Lilli’s character was made to be pregnant? Was it to make her treatment more shocking? Make the way she fights back more shocking? Or perhaps to explain the extra reserves of adrenaline she found; not to mention the will to survive.
If Netflix recommends you watch Lilli , give it a go. The description there is actually more accurate than the official publicity blurb on IMDb, which mentions “a gang of sadistic men” and “insurmountable odds”, neither of which are good descriptions, and they make it sound more over-the-top than it is. Lilli is just an hour and a half long and shows something tense and gritty; not what I’m used to from Indian cinema.

[Movie Review] LILITH
- August 4, 2021 August 4, 2021
Historically, Lilith was maligned as a demon and a monster whose M.O. included harming pregnant and laboring women and infants. However…some women took comfort and drew strength from the ancient folklore of a woman who stood up for herself, rejected a domineering man, and forged her own path. American-Israeli writer, journalist, and filmmaker Lilly Rivlin wrote an article about the biblical and Talmudic tales of Lilith for Ms. Magazine in 1972. In 1976, Susan Weidman Schneider founded the Jewish feminist magazine Lilith—she is still the editor-in-chief. Interest in Lilith, particularly as an icon of female liberation and agency, escalated and spread. Lilith Fair kicked off in 1997 and scores of books and collections of essays bearing Lilith’s name have been published since the ‘70s.
The interest has not died down; today, there are countless women and non-binary folk who have reclaimed Lilith.
Unsurprisingly, Lilith has also been a figure in pop culture for decades, especially in the horror and fantasy genres. Also unsurprisingly, most of the creators behind the stories have taken significant artistic liberties and have deviated significantly from the source material. Which is okay! Folklore and mythology are always evolving, with each storyteller adding their own flair and putting their own spin on things.
When I was presented with the opportunity to review this film, I was excited. Especially because the summary actually noted where the myth originated. The description is as follows: This is a horror anthology that follows the Demon Lilith, who punishes men for their indiscretions against women. A figure in Jewish mythology developed earliest in the Babylonian Talmud between the 3rd and 5th centuries, she is a dangerous demon of the night seeking her revenge. As she follows four men who have sinned against women, a detective is trying to stop her before she executes each victim and claims their souls.
LILITH was written by Richard J. Aguirre, Paul McFall, Anthony Werley, and Alexander T. Hwang, who also directed the film. Among the expansive cast is iconic horror actor Felissa Rose , so as you can imagine, I was looking forward to watching this movie.
My optimism died in the first three minutes.
Originally released in 2018, the film consists of four loosely interlocking stories about women getting revenge against the men who have wronged them. In each of the stories, a different woman plays Lilith, which could have been an excellent plot device if it was done well. Unfortunately, due to a combination of poor direction and even worse writing, the multiple portrayals of Lilith fell flat. Honestly, the use of Lilith at all made no sense considering the bland and very human ways that the men eventually meet their ends. There’s an overlaying narrative in addition to the four main stories, but this too is incredibly lackluster. Not even Felissa Rose could save it.
Going beyond the obvious surface problems of a weak plot and middle school-level writing, there is a deeper issue with LILITH . This is a film that aims to show women reclaiming their power that was stolen by men, and yet none of the stories were written by a woman. It’s doubtful that a single woman even read the script before LILITH went into pre-production. In fact, with the exception of the cast, there appear to be only two women involved in the making of LILITH : executive producer Kathleen W. Hwang and special effects makeup artist Nikki Vizcaino .
In essence, LILITH is the result of men appropriating a mythological figure that women have spent decades reclaiming, and not even doing it well. The film is now available On Demand and on Digital.

'Adrishyam' Review | Narain, Sharafudheen captivate in decent mystery drama
A missing idol, a team of police officials, a mystery woman and a kidnapping case. As a mystery drama, 'Adhrishyam' has its heart in the right place, with sufficient twists and turns to keep the audience guessing, till a point.
The pace reminds you of Tamil flicks of the same genre, but that shouldn't be surprising since 'Adrishyam' is a bilingual film, which caters to both Malayali and Tamil audiences.
Narain plays Nandakumar, a police officer who is asked by Purushothaman (Prathap Pothen), a top police official, to investigate a woman missing case. Sharafudheen (Rajkumar), a police officer from Tamil Nadu, is also part of the investigation. Simultaneously, Joju George who is an independent detective also starts a probe.
'Iraivan' review: Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara deliver a lacklustre thriller
Ponniyin Selvan 1 review: Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi shine brighter in this Mani Ratnam movie
Though it looks quite promising, the film struggles to progress naturally in some areas. The hospital scene, for example, involving a rich man (John Vijay) who wants to sear a child is very dramatic, though it soon becomes the turning point in the film. Also, in some areas the loopholes were evident, like when the makers failed to establish the connection between Purushothaman and Nandakumar. This lend incompleteness to the film.
Director Zac Harris has done a decent job keeping the mystery intact, though he hasn’t been able to infuse much freshness to the plotline.
But given that, the twists in the movie are quite interesting, especially when you consider that it is Zac's first film.
The characterisation is decent, but the use of multiple characters seemed unnecessary, as it tends to be too confusing. Joju George's role remains a mystery in the film, almost to the point that his character seemed like an unnecessary presence.
Its great to see Narain, who works predominantly in Tamil cinema, back in his home turf. As usual, he exudes enough charm on screen, though his character could been given some more meat.
Sharafudhin, who is getting a couple of variety roles, does justice to his character. It's a welcome surprise to see him handling romance with so much ease.
Joju George, who is capable of emoting best with his eyes, does justice to his role. The intensity is intact.
Anandhi and Athmeeya Rajan's performances are also, but there is limited space for women characters in the plot. Ranjin Raj's music lends charm to the film, while the background score by Dawn Vincent was also good.
It is good to see filmmakers exploring surrogacy as a subject, but a careful handling of sensitive topic is needed.

A really sensitive issue well made without any fuss or anything glaring ... I feel the story is really weak for a 2 hr plot Buta credit to the REAL REAL underrated SUPERSTAR of INDIAN CINEMA who don't care image like the so called fake superstars... he has stood in front making a statement... screenplay is decent as in a Malayalam movie slow paced ... but there could be some twists and turns which could have made it little more interesting

Eye For Film >> Movies >> Lilith (1964) Film Review
Reviewed by: Merlin Harries
Both writer and director of Lilith, the picture was destined to be the last work of Robert Rossen whose most prolific success came in the shape of The Hustler in 1961, starring Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason . Along with All the King’s Men, in 1949, the director had enjoyed great success which probably explains how this rather indiscernible and often frustrating picture came to be.
Lilith stars Warren Beatty as Vincent Bruce, a troubled ex-soldier who, on returning home, takes a counselling position at a local mental hospital. It is in the confines of the exclusive institute that he meets Lilith Arthur (Jean Seberg) an enigmatic and troubled soul with whom he becomes increasingly infatuated. Under the guise of Kim Hunter’s Dr Bea Brice, Vincent is encouraged to spend more and more time with the patient - and he eventually falls hopelessly in love with her. Any pretence of ethics goes out the window as he breaks every rule to fuel his obsession.
Having spent so much time with her Vincent is eventually praised for making a break-through with the young girl but it comes at a great price. Seberg is wonderful in the titular role, at once possessing Vincent utterly and yet retaining an aspect of fragile vulnerability. Throughout the picture she is a continual contrast between predator and prey, leading Vincent further and further into her own strange world. She even flaunts a supposedly amorous tryst with another female patient at Vincent in order to further disturb and provoke his unstable emotions. It is this instability that typifies Beatty’s turn as the young ex-soldier, who is surly in the extreme, founding the performance on the pretext that Vincent is as disturbed as Lilith if not more.
The story moves along somewhat awkwardly and some scenes seem a little superfluous such as when Vincent attempts to rekindle an old love interest in the form of Laura (Jessica Walter). We find Vincent loitering around her house before bumping into her husband played by the then blossoming talent of Gene Hackman.
The clear highpoint of Lilith is Seberg’s performance which carries the picture along nicely, coupled with the often sublime photography of Eugen Schüfftan. At the time, Hollywood had a fairly caustic regard for what was deemed to be ‘arty’ or exotic filmmaking but Schüfftan succeeds in injecting some much needed flair in the cinematography department. A particular scene where Lilith wades into a pond before dipping down to kiss her own reflection in the waters surface stands out as a joy to behold.
The story stutters along as Vincent becomes increasingly unhinged, plunged ever deeper into the Lilith’s disturbed world. The climactic scenes are somewhat predictable and, although the picture as a whole is enjoyable, it sadly fails to reach the lofty peaks of Rossen’s earlier works.
