Desiree Jones’ Dissertation Earns International Society for Autism Research Award

Photo of PSYC President's Postdoctoral Fellow Desiree Jones

Desiree Jones, a University of Maryland President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychology (PSYC), was recently named a recipient of the International Society for Autism Research ’s (INSAR) Dissertation Award.

Jones’ dissertation—which also received the “Best Dissertation Award” from the University of Texas at Dallas, from which Jones graduated with her Ph.D. in 2023—explores how negative social experiences and stigma impact the mental health of Black and white autistic adults.

“Black autistic adults, who have been historically underrepresented in research, were a primary focus of this study, so this award highlights the importance of including the voices of those who are often overlooked within the autistic community,” said Jones. “I am deeply honored and optimistic that this recognition will draw attention to the social difficulties faced by autistic people, and contribute to more inclusive attitudes within both academia and society as a whole.”

Jones was particularly inspired to pursue this line of research after participating in a 2020 round table discussion—published in the journal Autism in Adulthood—on systemic racism and autism. In the discussion, many of the participating autistic people of color said that they felt they lacked a community, that they had to deal with both racism and ableism, and that current research didn't embody their own experiences as a neurodivergent person of color.

“I walked away from that conversation feeling very empowered and motivated to explore Black autistic experiences through the lens of my own research, which focuses on peer attitudes and stigma towards autistic adults,” explained Jones.

INSAR has been presenting its dissertation award to between one and three people per year since 2011. Winning dissertations are read and scored by the INSAR Awards Committee—an international panel of experts from multidisciplinary fields across autism research—who then present the proposed awardees to the INSAR Board of Directors for a vote and final approval.

Jones will be presented with her INSAR dissertation award at the society’s annual meeting in Melbourne, Australia on May 16, 2024. She will also give a five-minute presentation of her work during the award ceremony that evening.

"We're extremely proud of the excellent work that Dr. Jones is doing on this incredibly important topic,” said PSYC Professor and Chair Michael Dougherty. “It's so nice to see this type of work—not to mention the work of a postdoctoral fellow in our Department of Psychology—recognized in this way."

Alex Tsompanidis receives INSAR Dissertation Award

Alex Tsompanidis

The award, accompanied by a prize of $1500, was given to Alex by a committee of autism researchers, who graded more than a hundred doctoral dissertations from around the world, using the scoring criteria for grant proposals to the National Institutes of Health of the US.

INSAR, the International Society of Autism Research is a scientific and professional organization devoted to advancing knowledge about autism. INSAR also organises annual conferences, attended by thousands of researchers. During the 2023 conference and following the announcement of the award, Alex also had the opportunity to present the main findings of his PhD and attend a meeting of the INSAR Board at the Nobel Prize museum in Stockolm.

His PhD was funded, in part, by a Peterhouse Graduate Studentship and focused on “sex differences in perinatal development and autism”, leading to new findings and several publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Alex, his PhD supervisor, Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, and a team of autism researchers from the UK and Israel, have now received a multi-million pound grant by the Simons Foundation , in order to further investigate these findings. Alex has also recently been named as one of the “top 40 under 40” autism researchers by Spectrum magazine. His research aims to understand sex differences in autism likelihood, and the role of the placenta in neurodevelopment.

We present here the recent advances in exploring new techniques related to interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) signal and data processing and applications.

1. Introduction

This Special Issue “InSAR Signal and Data Processing” of Sensors collects eleven articles from several InSAR researchers over several countries. The selected articles cover both InSAR signal processing techniques and their practical applications in Earth sciences. Readers of all levels will be able to gain a better understanding of InSAR as well as the when, the how, and the why of applying this technology.

2. Special Issue Contents

The first paper [ 1 ], “Polarimetric Stationarity Omnibus Test (PSOT) for Selecting Persistent Scatterer Candidates with Quad-Polarimetric SAR Datasets”, proposes the polarimetric stationarity omnibus test method for improving the spatial density and the phase quality of persistent scatterer (PS) points. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve the polarimetric optimization of the interferometric phase of the PS, suppress the sidelobe of the strong scatterer effectively, and hence better reveal the details of the ground object. The second article [ 2 ], “Coherent Markov Random Field-Based Unreliable DSM Areas Segmentation and Hierarchical Adaptive Surface Fitting for InSAR DEM Reconstruction”, proposes a novel InSAR digital elevation model reconstruction method using a digital surface model generated by an InSAR system with a coherent Markov random field technique. The comparison results shown in the experimental section indicate the superiority of the proposed algorithm. The third paper [ 3 ], “Multibaseline Interferometric Phase Denoising Based on Kurtosis in the NSST Domain”, and the fourth article [ 4 ], “Extended Phase Unwrapping Max-Flow/Min-Cut Algorithm for Multibaseline SAR Interferograms Using a Two-Stage Programming Approach”, focus on phase denoising and phase unwrapping techniques of multibaseline InSAR, respectively. The fifth paper [ 5 ], “Mining-Induced Time-Series Deformation Investigation Based on SBAS-InSAR Technique: A Case Study of Drilling Water Solution Rock Salt Mine”, shows an InSAR case study concerning salt extraction based on solution mining. The study applies the SBAS-InSAR technique to obtain the spatial–temporal characteristics of the ground subsidence caused by solution mining activities. The sixth paper [ 6 ], “Phase Difference Measurement of Under-Sampled Sinusoidal Signals for InSAR System Phase Error Calibration”, discusses the issue related to phase error calibration in spaceborne single-pass InSAR. The proposed method of the phase difference measurement of the high-frequency internal calibration signal of the InSAR system is suitable for the phase error calibration. As the highest elevation permafrost region in the world, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) permafrost is quickly degrading due to global warming, climate change, and human activities. The seventh article [ 7 ], “Permafrost Deformation Monitoring Along the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Engineering Corridor Using InSAR Observations with Multi-Sensor SAR Datasets from 1997–2018”, presents an application using a time-series InSAR technique with multiple SAR datasets to monitor the permafrost ground deformation along the QTEP from 1997 to 2018. GaoFen-3 is a new Chinese InSAR remote sensing satellite. The eighth article [ 8 ], “ScanSAR Interferometry of the Gaofen-3 Satellite with Unsynchronized Repeat-Pass Images”, discusses interferometric analysis and processing methods for GaoFen-3 images in ScanSAR mode. The ninth paper [ 9 ], “A Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Processor for SAR Imaging”, concerns the hardware design of a SAR signal processor consisting of two 18 × 16 heterogeneous arrays that provide 115.2 GOPS throughput. In the tenth paper [ 10 ], “Monitoring the Land Subsidence Area in a Coastal Urban Area with InSAR and GNSS”, 34 scenes of Sentinel-1A SAR images are used for SBAS and PS processing to obtain the surface deformation field of a large region spanning the Shenzhen, China, and Hong Kong Special Administrative Regions. The last article [ 11 ], “Safe Helicopter Landing on Unprepared Terrain Using Onboard Interferometric Radar”, proposes an interferometric radar survey system for the generation of ground surface topography for helicopter landing sites. The system generates high-quality three-dimensional terrain surface topography data and estimates the slope of the site with the required accuracy.

Introduction

The SAR technique allows the formation of high-resolution radar images from the data acquired by side-looking instruments installed on spacecraft, aircraft, or the ground. The fundamentals underlying SAR image processing are presented in Chapter 3 “ SAR Images, Interpretation of ”. Each pixel of an image corresponds to the scattered signal from a resolution element on the ground, which is transmitted and received by the SAR. A pixel is characterized by two values: the amplitude and the phase. While the amplitude of a single image can be interpreted in terms of the backscattering properties of the ground (Fig. 1a ), the phase is not very informative because it is a pseudorandom contribution from the configuration of all scatterers within the resolution...

InCHIP Dissertation Assistantship Award Supports Anthropology Student’s Research on Migrant Rights

"Despite the need for human rights protections, U.S.-influenced migration policies in Central America limit travel through legal ports of entry and push migrants to increasingly dangerous transit routes."

An image of a migrant sitting in a Migrant Reception Station in the Darien Province, Panama

In 2023, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reported 2.5 million migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border, marking a five-fold increase since 2017. Notably, for the first time, half of these migrants, including many families, came from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Haiti, Cuba, and regions outside of the Americas.

“This diverse population of nationalities and profiles of female and children migrants presents novel linguistic, cultural, and health service needs en route to the border. Despite this population’s needs for protections and access to health services, migration policies in Central America, influenced by the United States, limit travel through legal ports of entry and push migrants to increasingly dangerous transit routes,” says Madeline Baird, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Baird is working with her advisor, César Abadía-Barrero , an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute , on her dissertation, which uses ethnographic methods to explore how U.S.-influenced immigration policies impact migrants’ path and health outcomes.

Baird hopes the project will inform national, regional, and local migration and health policy to promote human rights and public health for people headed to the U.S. southern border.

“Maddy is one of our outstanding graduate students and her work is a model of how anthropology can address real-world, pressing issues,” says Christian A. Tryon , professor and Anthropology Department Head.

According to Abadía-Barrero, the study would be among the first to show how U.S. migration policies shape migrant trajectories, humanitarian responses, and associated health outcomes.

To support Baird’s research, UConn’s Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy ( InCHIP ) has awarded Baird its Dissertation Assistantship Award .

“InCHIP is delighted to support Madeline’s vital dissertation research through its Dissertation Assistantship Award. Madeline’s project is innovative and timely and has the potential to make a significant public health impact for migrants traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border,” says InCHIP Director Tricia Leahey.

“The Dissertation Assistantship will provide essential resources to enable me to concentrate the upcoming academic year on completing analysis and writing of the results of my research in Mexico and Panama. Thank you to InCHIP for this support to advance my research on human rights protections and health equity for migrants in transit to the U.S. southern border,” says Baird.

Launched during the 2023 academic year, the Assistantship Award aims to fill a gap at UConn by providing financial support to behavioral and social sciences graduate students as they complete dissertations relating to human health. Recipients can choose to use the award part-time over two semesters or full-time across one semester.

In addition to this financial support, awardees can tap into InCHIP’s network of principal investigators who are leaders in the fields of public health and applied social and behavioral health research.

Previous Assistantship Award recipients include Jude Ssenyonjo, a Ph.D. candidate in health promotion sciences in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources, and Maritza Vasquez Reyes, a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Social Work.

In 2023, Baird was awarded InCHIP’s 2023 Jeffrey D. Fisher Health Behavior Change Research Fellowship . The fellowship awards funding to one outstanding UConn graduate student working on their dissertation in health behavior.

More information about Baird’s research is available here .

Jablin Dissertation Award – Call for Submissions, Applications Due June 15th, 2024

By Patricia Spillane

The Fredric M. Jablin Doctoral Dissertation Award, which I hope will interest your doctoral students. A description of the award and the application process can be found at http://jepson.richmond.edu/about/jablin-dissertation-award/index.html .

Established in 1992, the Jepson School of Leadership Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of leadership. Jepson faculty members make significant contributions to their home disciplines as well as to the field of leadership studies. They come from leading doctoral programs in traditional academic disciplines such as religious studies, philosophy, and social psychology.

This interdisciplinary approach to leadership is reflected in our recent selection of recipients for the Jablin Dissertation Award. Past winners earned their doctorates in such areas as political science at Yale University, history at Stanford, and religion at Princeton University.

I hope that you will consider nominating one of your doctoral students for the award. I would be most willing to discuss the award with you or any potential recipients you may know. The deadline for applications is June 15, 2024 .

If you have any questions or want to further discuss a potential candidate, you are more than welcome to reach out to Dean Peart ( [email protected] ) to discuss.

Weber Earns American Accounting Association Best Dissertation Paper Award

By SU Public Relations

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. David P. Weber, CFE, professor of practice and lead faculty for the Fraud and Forensic Accounting Program in Salisbury University’s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, recently received the Timothy Pearson Best Dissertation Paper Award from the American Accounting Association.

Weber was recognized for his dissertation “Investigation of the Severity of Embezzlement as Predicted by Demographic Variables,” including gender and age, in the forensic accounting category.

The award recognizes works that are outstanding in the categories of originality; empirical, experimental, or methodological design; contribution to the literature; and impact on practice.

“I’m especially honored to receive this award named after Dr. Timothy Pearson, a pioneer in the field of forensic accounting,” said Weber, who had been long-time professional acquaintances with Pearson prior to his passing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Weber’s work includes a $2.6 million grant  from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to enhance fraud and forensic accounting education, and combat elder financial exploitation and high-tech crime received by Weber and the Office of the State’s Attorney for Worcester County to enhance the SU Fraud and Forensic Accounting Certificate Program’s ongoing partnership with that office since 2022.

WHU-Absolvent für EURO Doctoral Dissertation Award 2024 nominiert

Dr. Jan-Rasmus Künnen erreicht Top fünf in Europa
