How to Write a Biography in the Third Person

A biography is written in the third person to introduce an individual in a professional capacity. It should showcase your career experience, background and expertise yet be as succinct as possible. Third-person biographies are vital for writers and are meant to give readers a peek at them on a personal level as well as insight into their writing history.

Think of your life as though you were someone else and not yourself. This will help in enabling you to more easily write your biography in the third person and will bring to mind the more interesting aspects of yourself that you will want to include.

Decide on a few aspects of your life you want to write about in the biography. Focus on including anything that is relevant to your career, education and another areas of your life that gives readers insight into your personality, such as a hobby.

Write a few short paragraphs to keep your biography succinct and to the point. Use your full name in the first sentence, and refer to yourself by just your first name or as "he" or "she" in the sentences that follow.

Proofread your biography. Edit any mistakes you notice, and rewrite any awkward sentences to make them better. Use the spell-checking function on your word processing program as well. Have another person look over your biography so that fresh eyes can proofread it.

How to Write a Good Third Person Biographical Statement

When you read submission guidelines, which vary from literary journal to literary journal, almost all of them will require that you include a brief biographical statement (or bio). Usually they require that the bio is in the third person and to be 50 words or less.

These bios are tricky to write.It is hard to describe ones life using 50 words or less. And frankly, you are better off not doing it. The editor of the journal does not care if you have been twice divorced, and neither does the reading public.

I am all for including one or two personal details, but I prefer that they relate indirectly to your writing. For example when I was submitting a lot of geographically themed poems I included the line “Emily Harstone just moved for the 18th time”.

Another fact worth considering including is what you actually do for a living. Most writers don’t write for a living. They do something else to pay the bills. Mentioning what that is can easily add complexity to your bio. Although it might affect the way your submission is considered. For example mentioning that you are a lawyer in your bio would have a different effect than mentioning that you are a stripper.

Most writers focus the bulk of their (very short) bio on writing. This is often a good thing. Although that can be tricky too. The biggest pitfalls is just mentioning the same things as every other writer. For example I once scanned through a literary journal and every single contributor’s bio included the fact that they had an MFA (a Masters of Fine Arts degree).  The schools they attended varied, but that single fact repeated over and over again got to me. Right after reading all of those bios, I removed the fact that I have an MFA from my bio.

The other issue is mentioning too many literary journals that you have been published in. When you are first starting out this seems like a good problem to have. And once your work has been published, you should include some of the most recent or prestigious journals in your biographical statement.

However, you should not include all of them, that would just be overwhelming and also boring. As a general rule of thumb I never include the names of more than 5 literary journals. Usually I limit it to three.

Some authors don’t bother mentioning the names of all the literary journals they have been published in. Their bios instead they say something like this “Their work has been published in over a hundred literary journals.”  If you are just starting out, that sounds impressive, but quality is much more important than quantity when it comes to literary journals. It would be much better to name the three best literary journals you have been published in than to refer to all one hundred (or more).

Below are two examples of biographical statements of less than 50 words, one contains journal names, one does not.

Sample Bio 1:

Maria Smith resides in the rural Pacific Northwest. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in numerous places, including: Tin House , The Liner, and Echolocation , and the anthology Tidelines. Her second chapbook Pancakes for Dinner is forthcoming in 2014 from Hawthorne Press.

Sample Bio 2:

Joshua Thomas is a poet, editor, and recovering New Yorker who now lives in Idaho. Joshua once wrote a sonnet every hour for twenty-four hours straight. He loves to hike, cook, and read.

My personal ideal for a good bio is to mention one interesting personal fact. And then focus the rest of the bio on the area where writing and life intersect. I always include a link to my website as part of my bio. That way readers who like my writing can learn more about me (and possibly purchase a book or two).

Once I write a bio I am happy with, I use it for about a year. I submit the same bio with most of my submissions.  After a year has passed, I write a new one.

Remember, it is important to keep in mind who is seeing the bio. First the editor sees it (if they do blind submissions the editor might not see your bio till right before the issue published), and then the readers of the literary journals.

You want your bio to be short, professional, and to appeal to both the editors and the readers. I know that might seem like a tough task, but it gets a lot easier with time and practice.

Depending on your year in college, your biography will vary in length and topics. For example, a senior may have more work or internship experience to write about than a first-year student, and can describe his/her job roles, skills, and professional interests. On the other hand, first-year students could focus their bio on their background, educational goals, and hobbies. In both cases, your bio should craft an engaging narrative that emphasizes your interests and personality.

Bios are written in the third person and are typically one or two paragraphs, depending on your level of experience. Your bio should start with your name and a quick sentence that describes your basic background. This can include your college, year in school, academic focus, and professional interest. Your bio should be brief, concise, and clear.

Establish a Background Story

Highlighting your background will give the reader an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of your personal narrative, which may not be evident on your resume. However, writing one isn’t the easiest task in the world. It’s especially true if you’re one of those people who gets stage fright just thinking about having to talk about yourself.

So, how do you muster the courage to write a personal bio that stands out from the crowd? How do you make it witty, engaging, and memorable?

In this article, I’ll share some tips for crafting a personal bio (with some personal bio examples) that capture the attention of even the most distracted reader.

Before we start, here’s a quick overview of key elements you should include in your personal bio:

Here are some key elements that you should consider including in your professional bio:

  • Career highlights and achievements: Highlight some of your most notable achievements and accomplishments. This can help to establish your expertise and credibility in your field. Example: “I’ve worked with various high-profile clients, including XYZ Corporation and ABC Publications.”
  • Your unique skills and qualities: What sets you apart from others in your industry? Mention those unique skills and qualities in your bio.
  • Personal interests and hobbies: A few details about your life can help humanize your bio and make you more relatable to readers. Example: “In my free time, I enjoy hiking and exploring new places with my dog, Max.”

Before that, it’s important to clear one pervasive doubt.

Should you write your personal bio in the first person or third person?

When a company first requested my personal bio, I remember scurrying here and there on the internet, frantically searching for examples of how other writers crafted their bios.

Was it customary to write in the first person or in the lofty, third-person perch of professional grandeur?

And I came to a conclusion.

Writing in the first person can be useful when writing a bio for a personal website or social media profile, or when trying to build a personal connection with the reader.

The tone is also often more personal and informal, as if you are speaking directly to the reader.

Hemingway’s autobiographical work , “A Moveable Feast,” is also written in the first person.

This approach in his personal biography allowed Hemingway to share his personal experiences and insights into the literary world of Paris in the 1920s. The book is a classic of literary non-fiction.

Tips for writing a compelling personal bio

Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Know your purpose

Before you start writing your bio, you need to know why you’re writing it and what tone you want to convey.

Are you trying to showcase your expertise? Introduce yourself to potential clients or customers? Connect with fellow professionals in your field?

Whatever your purpose, you need to tailor your bio accordingly. Duh!

It should also show you have the skills and experience to do the job well. This is especially true if you seek work in a particular field.

For example, if you want to work as an accountant, architect, or teacher, you need to show that you are qualified for this type of work.

2. Address your audience

The best personal bios are written with a specific audience in mind. If you don’t know who that audience is, how can you write for them?

That’s why before writing anything at all, ask yourself who will be reading it.

Who do you want to reach out to with this information?

Are they looking for someone like you?

What do they need from someone like you?

Once you have an answer or two (or three), start writing.

Let’s say you’re writing a bio for a professional website or portfolio that targets potential employers or clients in the creative industry.

In that case, you might want to include background information such as:

  • Your education and qualifications in a relevant field
  • Your work experience and current position in a creative role
  • Your professional goals and interests related to creativity
  • Your hobbies and passions that showcase your creativity
  • Your awards and recognition for your creative work

Allie Decker’s professional bio is a shining example of how to address your audience from the get-go.

By stating, “I love to write and help organizations produce content that builds and converts communities and drives revenue,” she immediately captures the attention of businesses needing content marketing expertise.

It’s going to be similar to creating your ” About page copy ” using Jasper (which we already discussed in the linked article).

  • The tone of the bio is professional and informative rather than overly personal or casual.
  • The bio focuses on Lena’s audience. This lets readers know that Lena wants to help.

5. Mark Levy : Branding Firm Founder

Mark Levy is a small business owner. While the professional bio on his website takes a traditional approach, it still speaks to Mark’s audience.

What I love about his bio is the way he‘s set it up: On his business' "About" page, he‘s listed two biographies, which he’s labeled "Mark Levy's Biography #1" and "Mark Levy's Biography #2."

The second is the "long version," which is even more interesting than the first. Why? It reads like a story — a compelling one, at that. In fact, it gets hilarious in some parts.

The second sentence of the bio reads: "He was frightened of public school, loved playing baseball and football, ran home to watch ape films on the 4:30 Movie, listened to The Jam and The Buzzcocks, and read magic trick books."

I wouldn‘t necessarily be inclined to follow Chris if his bio had simply read, "I post beautiful images." But images that inspire me to travel? Now that’s something I can get behind.

Last, he ends on a humble, sweet note: "He is happiest with his wife Breanne raising their two sons." So inject personal information into your bio — it makes you seem approachable.

  • It highlights Chris’s achievement without bragging.
  • The last sentence portrays Chris as a responsible man who loves his family.
  • The well-written bio speaks to nature lovers who like the outdoors, surfing, and more. This gives them reasons to follow Chris.

Throughout her bio, you'll notice the number of murals she's completed and a brief timeline of her career. This helps her paint the picture of who she is as a professional.

Mouzon effectively grips the reader's attention with this introduction and then dives into some of her impressive accomplishments — including a brand now sold at Urban Outfitters and Target.

The language used throughout Mouzon's bio is authentic, real, and honest.

If you're posting a bio on a social media account or sending a quick blurb to a client, you want to keep it short and sweet while showcasing your accomplishments.

To get started, use these best practices for writing your short professional bio:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • State what you do.

1. Introduce yourself.

Your introduction is your first impression, so always begin by telling people who you are. You may start with a greeting like, "Hello, my name is" or "Hi! Let me first introduce myself …" when sending your bio as a message.

If you’re writing a bio for an online platform, stating your name at the beginning works as well.

Leading with your name — even as a question — is important for recognition and building relationships.

2. State what you do.

Give people an idea of what you do daily and where you work. Your job title is how the people put you into context and consider whether your profession relates to their industry.

So detail your most relevant work in your short bios, like CEO, professor, and author.

Take a cue from Angela Duckworth , who specifies what she does in her LinkedIn bio:

3. Add key skills or areas of expertise.

If you send a bio to a client or potential employer, highlight your most valuable skills. For instance, if your expertise is in social media marketing and content creation, like Ivanka Dekoning , list these skills.

  • Mention a hobby. "I’ll be honest: for me, tennis is life — Go Nadal!"

Whichever way you choose to get personal, give people a glimpse into who you are as an individual.

When writing a short bio, it can be tempting to pack in as much relevant information about yourself as possible — but this isn’t the most effective approach.

Instead, focus on including the details that you and your audience care about most and leave out the fluff.

What I love most about Tristen's bio is that it’s a great example of how to deliver information about yourself that is relevant to your work while also sharing fun details that audiences will find relatable.

"Building from her experience with GoCo.io and Southwest Airlines, Tristen's work has been recognized by Marketing Brew and BLACK@INBOUND. She lives in Washington, DC, attending anime conventions and painting in her free time."

Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.

  • The bio is short and direct.
  • The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.

6. Bea Dixon : Feminine Care Founder

Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.

For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.

Writing your personal bio: 1st person or 3rd person?

This is a question that I’m always asked, and while there is no set rule on the matter, it’s certainly something that divides opinion. Just glance through a handful of LinkedIn profiles to see what I mean. But as our personal bio becomes more important in a world where our digital profiles are read before our voices are heard, understanding how best to write your bio is definitely something worth figuring out.

Your personal bio serves several functions. Firstly, it needs to tell people who you are and what you’re about and it’s a great opportunity for you to tell people what makes you great/different/interesting/unique/qualified for the job/credible/worth listening to (*delete as appropriate). Ideally it should tell people what you think they will be interested in knowing about you and help you to stand out and be memorable. What you don’t want, are people giving up on reading your personal bio half way through because they’re bored or they think you’re an idiot. Anyway, back to the question; “Should my personal bio be written in the first person or third person?”

As part of my research for this post, I put the question to my Twitter followers, and here are some of the responses I received.

@Story_Jon Jon Thomas “If its your own site, I would say first. Otherwise, third.”

@colinjbrowne Colin J Browne “Third. That way people can cut and paste it, which is really the point, I reckon.”

@CopyFountain “Personal bios: 1st or 3rd person RT @colinjbrowne: @AlexiaL Third. That way people can cut and paste it. <- Mark likes this.”

@gspress4attnpr Greg Simpson “hmmm re personal bio, I would say 3rd person as often used by people who do not know you”

When I ran a poll on my Facebook page , the votes were 67% – first person and 33% – third person. What does that tell you? We don’t really know! So, to help us figure this out, I think the first question we need to ask ourselves is this:

Where is it going to be used?

Is it on your personal website? Is it for a speaker bio at a conference? Is it for the “Meet our team” page on the company website? Is it for a book? All these are very different environments and the reader will have a different expectation of “who” is doing the talking. For example, at a conference, all literature and collateral is likely to be produced by the event organiser. So, in this situation, most people would probably expect a bio to be written in the third person. Just as if the organiser is standing there on stage introducing this person who’s about to come on.

However, if it’s for your personal website or your LinkedIn profile they are going to have a different expectation. People are going to be engaging directly with you (you hope!). So, in this environment you want to be able to create that connection as effortlessly and as naturally as possible. Imagine being at an event and introducing yourself: would you do it in the 3rd person? NO! Not unless you’re an idiot or you’ve multiple personalities. People are going to assume that you are responsible for your own website or LinkedIn profile and that you write it yourself. That is, unless you want to create the impression that you have a team of minions that do everything for you. But even if you did, would you still outsource the bit where you meet and engage with new people? Probably not. A great bio will encourage people want to find out more about you. People are more likely to want to find out more about you if you’ve helped to create a connection with them and in this situation, a connection is better created when you’re speaking as you rather than through someone else.

Your personal bio never exists in the singular

You have several. It is likely after all, that you will be engaging with different audiences, in different places, in different contexts. Different audiences have different needs and will be interested in different aspects of you. In some instances your bio will need to be four or five lines, whereas others may be two or three paragraphs. Do you have the same bio in your Twitter profile as your LinkedIn profile? Knowing what to say, where, and to who is the art of communicating. So having one bio to fit all these is just not going to work. You don’t have just one way of introducing yourself when you meet people; you have several depending on who you meet, where you are and what you think they’ll be interested in. The same goes for your bio.

Free for all?

@ColinJBrown ’s comment “Third. That way people can cut and paste it, which is really the point, I reckon.“ is interesting. Personally I’d never considered that someone would copy and paste my bio from my site. Why would anyone be using your bio without your knowledge? In my mind, if someone wants a bio from you, it’s very likely that you’re already engaging with them on some level and that you know that they will want your bio. Maybe you’re speaking at their event, or contributing to their magazine or blog. In this case I would send them a bio that is tailored to the audience and message I want to get across. This may well be a standard bio that you have ready to send, even if it is a direct copy of your first person bio.

Keep control of your message

Mark (@copyFountain) likes the fact that people can copy and paste a bio from the online home where it may be living. Personally, I find this a risky strategy. If anything, you DO NOT want people to copy it. If someone wants your bio, then it’s worth taking the time finding out where it’s going to be used and who’s likely to be reading it. This then offers you the opportunity to tailor your bio appropriately thus ensuring that you are saying exactly what you want to say to that particular audience.

This close management of your message will go a long way in helping you to build and maintain the kind of reputation that you can be proud of. The lazy approach of letting people copy and paste what they like, maybe even writing it for you, means that you are relinquishing control of one of the most important opportunities for you to be clear on what you’re about and thus extend your reach and your network in the way that you want. In a world where people will first meet you through your personal bio, can you afford to take the lazy approach?

At university I was told a bio should be in the 1st person, I think it was because the tutor wanted to really get to know us personally rather than read an evaluation of our skills, strengths and weaknesses.

Having worked a fair bit in the professional world where sometimes a bit of discretion goes a long way, I nearly always write in third person. Somehow it looks so much more professional. I work in the performance arts and third person sounds business like, e.g Samantha gained a major county award to study at…Samantha has since shifted her choreography away from traditional narrative to social justice issues. What does writing in the third person mean?

The third person point of view is one of three writing styles that can be used to explain a point of view. Even if you don’t realize it, you’ve most certainly used first, second, and third person in writing projects throughout your education.

It is a narrative in which you compose and examine the subject matter entirely on your initiative. You remain impartial. You do not attempt to change readers’ opinions. It’s a completely impartial, objective writing style that gets right to the heart of a subject or tells a story.

If you need to know how to differentiate between them three. Here’s a quick breakdown to understand the differences when you write your next paper:

This is from the I/we perspective. This is where we talk about our beliefs, ourselves, and ourselves. When writing in the first person, you will use pronouns like I, me, myself, and mine.

This point of view belongs to the person you’re addressing; therefore, it is a ‘you’ perspective. You would use second-person pronouns in your work, such as you, your, and yourself.

The writing style used in stories is known as the third person point of view, and it is aimed at the person or people under discussion. In this perspective, the pronouns he, she, him, her, his, hers, himself, herself, it, them, their, and themselves are used. You may also use a name. But that tends to happen more in stories than research papers.

Can you now differentiate them?

The third-person point of view is quite common in academic writing since it tells the reader a story and is frequently used when taking an authoritative attitude in your work.

As a result, while writing academic materials such as essays and research papers, always use the third person.

The reason for this is that it will make your work less biased and more objective, thereby increasing your reputation. The third-person perspective allows you to focus on the facts and data rather than your personal opinion, which will eventually boost your grades.

You can break third-person perspectives into three other types, including omniscient, limited, and objective. Although they’re more associated with creative writing than academic work and essays, your writing is likely to fall under the third-person objective point of view.

The 3 Types of Third-Person Point of View

The omniscient narrator understands the plot and the characters. This narrator can travel freely across time, enter the minds of any character, and share with the reader both their own and the character’s thoughts and observations.

For example, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice uses a third-person omniscient point of view, giving the reader complete access to the primary character, Elizabeth, and everyone around her.

Also known as a “close third,” this limited point of view happens when an author writes in the third person while focusing on a single character. The narrator can switch between characters in each chapter or portion of the book, or they can do so throughout.

With this point of view, the author can limit the reader’s perspective and control the information they are aware of. It is used to heighten tension and arouse curiosity.

In this type of narration, the narrator is objective and oblivious to any character’s emotions or ideas. The narrator tells the story with an observant approach.

Ernest Hemingway uses this third-person narrative voice in his short story “Hills Like White Elephants.” An unidentified narrator tells the story of a couple in Spain talking while waiting for a train. With this point of view, the reader becomes a voyeur, listening in on a scene or story.

Rule number one: never refer to yourself in the third person in an article. That’s not acceptable.

For example, if your essay is about virtual learning, here’s what not to include in the sentence.

“I feel like students perform better at home because they have more freedom and are more comfortable.”

It’s a simple sentence, but when addressing research papers and using a third-person narrative, there are various concerns. Why? You are making comments that sound like opinions because you are using first-person pronouns, and you are unable to back them up with facts or credible research.

Also, it isn’t very assertive. “I feel like” will not impress the person evaluating your work because it lacks authority and underlines that it originated just in your mind and is insignificant in any way.

However, if you alter the example to the third-person perspective, you can reference your sources, which is exactly what you should do to improve your essay and research paper marks.

Let’s rewrite the line in a more expansive third person point of view:

“A psychological study from Karrie Goodwin shows that students thrive in virtual classrooms as they offer flexibility. They can make their hours and take regular breaks. Another study from high school teacher, Ashlee Trip, highlighted that children enjoy freedom, the ability to work at their own pace and decide what their day will look like.”

With a third-person narrative, you can present evidence to the reader and back up the claims you make. As a result, it not only shows your knowledge but also your diligence in researching and backing up your work with credible sources and facts rather than simply your opinions.

Advantages and Reasons to Write in Third Person Point of View

When compared to the first and second person, the third person can highlight more characters and cover a longer narrative arc.

A reader can see the story from every perspective, and each one contributes elements that a character lacks in the other, resulting in a rich, complex narrative.

The third person allows for greater adaptability; you can help your reader see everything, be everywhere, and switch between different characters’ stories. You can go from complete omniscience to a limited or close third point of view.

This latter strategy allows readers to have a greater understanding of a character and scenario by entering the characters’ thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Writing from the third person point of view places the narrator above the action, creating a bird’s-eye-view of the story.

Because the narrator has nothing at stake, this perspective, combined with knowledge of at least one character’s thoughts in both omniscient and limited third person, lends the story a more authoritative, trustworthy tone.

Tips for Writing in Third 3 rd person

Before you begin writing your story, think about whether a third person perspective—limited, omniscient, or objective—will work best for it. Each has an advantage when it comes to narrative. Do you want the reader to remain in suspense and only learn what the main character discovers?

Next, write your story in a limited third person. Consider writing an epic narrative in the third person omniscient viewpoint, allowing your narrator to be all-knowing and featuring a big cast of people.

When using third-person pronouns such as “he,” “she,” “it,” or “they” instead of referring to specific characters by name, make sure to be consistent.

Every written work has a voice or point of view that appears to be directed specifically at the reader. This is not always possible, however, because academic writing is more objective than, example, a book.

Your academic work does not require you to “fluff” up your writing to inject your personality into it.

The purpose of academic writing is to consistently maintain a formal tone. Your next paper should be written to write in mind, rather than the writer or reader.

If you’ve only ever written in the first or second person, this is easier said than done. If you find yourself writing in the first person when writing your next paper, go back and alter it to a third-person perspective.

This is the point at which things become a little unclear. The key to writing in the third person is to use pronouns like they, it, he, or she. However, using them at the beginning of sentences can appear confusing and potentially mislead the reader, which is the last thing you want in your paper or essay.

Instead, consider using nouns at the beginning of sentences as an alternative. For example, when beginning a statement, use the actual subject—the writer or the interviewer—rather than he, she, or they.

All academic writing, including reports, essays, and research papers, must be written in the present tense, especially when introducing new themes or discoveries.

As a result, you should write “This report analyzes” as if you are analyzing right now, rather than “This paper analyzed,” which appears to be correct because it occurred in the past and the writing is in the present.

The difference is that you should use the past tense when describing your research approach. This implies, for example, that you would use the third person to refer to “the equipment that was used” or “the results were analyzed by.”

If the topic of your report is something you are deeply interested in, it can be very tempting to include some of your own thoughts. Although you must coach yourself out of it.

If you want to write from an objective point of view, see your characters as complete outsiders, keep in mind that your narrator is blind to their thoughts. As an outside observer, you can only tell the reader what you observe.

The third person uses pronouns such he, she, him, her, his, hers, himself, herself, it, them, their, and themselves. You may also use a name.

You is used in second person and is therefore not used in third person. The second person is used for the person that is being addressed.

The third-person point of view is aimed at the person or people being talked about, which is the type of writing you’d find in stories. When writing in third-person view, make sure to write in the present tense and avoid adding your own thoughts.

Writing in the third person in academic papers is easy to learn if you practice regularly and consistently. Examine and critique your work until it is regarded as the norm. Sure, it may be confusing at first, but you’ll rapidly learn the technique and be able to improve your papers and reports.

What to Know The point of view of a story determines who is telling it and the narrator's relationship to the characters in the story. In first person point of view the narrator is a character in the story telling it from their perspective. In third person point of view the narrator is not part of the story and the characters never acknowledge the narrator's presence. Less common than first and third is second person point of view. In second person point of view the reader is part of the story. The narrator describes the reader's actions, thoughts, and background using "you."

When you tell a story, an important thing to choose is the point of view that the story should take. Point of view determines who tells the story, as well as the relationship that the narrator has to the characters in the story. A story can have a much different feel depending on who is doing the telling.

The main points of view are first person and third person, with second person appearing less frequently but still common enough that it gets studied in writing classes. These are also the terms used to distinguish the personal pronouns. The pronouns I and we are first-person pronouns; they refer to the self. The pronoun you , used for both singular and plural antecedents, is the second-person pronoun, the person who is being addressed. The third person pronouns— he , she , it , they —refer to someone or something being referred to apart from the speaker or the person being addressed. Narratives are often identified as first, second, or third person based on the kinds of pronouns they utilize.

First Person Point of View

In first-person narration, the narrator is a person in the story, telling the story from their own point of view. The narration usually utilizes the pronoun I (or we , if the narrator is speaking as part of a group). The character who tells the story might be in the middle of the action or more of a character who observes the action from the outer limits, but in either case you are getting that character’s recounting of what happens.

It also means that impressions and descriptions are colored by that character’s opinions, mood, past experiences, or even their warped perceptions of what they see and hear.

There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating, that further outdoor exercise was now out of the question. I was glad of it: I never liked long walks, especially on chilly afternoons: dreadful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight, with nipped fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the chidings of Bessie, the nurse, and humbled by the consciousness of my physical inferiority to Eliza, John, and Georgiana Reed. — Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre , 1847

In Jane Eyre , the narration is provided by the story’s title character, a governess. The information shared comes from her memories and impressions—of the weather, her knowledge of Mrs. Reed’s dining habits, and her dread at receiving a lecture from Nurse Bessie. We are likewise shielded from information that Jane doesn’t know.

Many classic works of fiction feature characters made memorable by their first-person voices: The Catcher in the Rye (Holden Caulfield), The Handmaid's Tale (Offred), or To Kill a Mockingbird (Scout Finch). In some stories, such as in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby , the first person narrator (Nick Carraway) is an observer of the character around whom the story is centered (Jay Gatsby).

Second Person

Second-person narration is a little-used technique of narrative in which the action is driven by a character ascribed to the reader, one known as you . The reader is immersed into the narrative as a character involved in the story. The narrator describes what "you" do and lets you into your own thoughts and background. The most well-known piece of fiction that employs second-person narration might be Jay McInerney’s novel Bright Lights, Big City .

At the subway station you wait fifteen minutes on the platform for a train. Finally a local, enervated by graffiti, shuffles into the station. You get a seat and hoist a copy of the New York Post. The Post is the most shameful of your several addictions. — Jay McInerney, Bright Lights, Big City , 1984

You will also find second-person narration used in the "Choose Your Own Adventure" style of books popular with younger readers, in which readers determine where the story goes by which page they turn to next. Allowing the reader to "be" the central character in the story provides an immersive reading experience, enhancing what is at stake for the character and reader.

Third Person Point of View

In third-person narration, the narrator exists outside the events of the story, and relates the actions of the characters by referring to their names or by the third-person pronouns he, she, or they.

Third-person narration can be further classified into several types: omniscient, limited, and objective.

Third Person Omniscient

Omniscient means "all-knowing," and likewise an omniscient narrator knows every character’s thoughts, feelings, and motivations even if that character doesn’t reveal any of those things to the other characters.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott serves as a good example of third-person omniscient narration:

"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled Jo, lying on the rug. "It's so dreadful to be poor!" sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress. "I don't think it's fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all," added little Amy, with an injured sniff. "We've got Father and Mother, and each other," said Beth contentedly from her corner. The four young faces on which the firelight shone brightened at the cheerful words, but darkened again as Jo said sadly, "We haven't got Father, and shall not have him for a long time." She didn't say "perhaps never," but each silently added it, thinking of Father far away, where the fighting was. — Louisa May Alcott, Little Women , 1868

The story is not told from the point of view of Meg, Jo, Beth, or Amy, but from someone who is observing the four sisters as they talk to one another. Each character is therefore referred to by their names or the third-person pronoun she . The narrator does not exist as a character in the story, and the girls do not acknowledge the narrator’s presence.

However, the narrator is omniscient, which means that they know what the characters are thinking. This is demonstrated in the last line of the excerpt, when the girls silently ponder the thought of their father never returning from the war.

Third Person Limited

In third-person limited narration, the narrator still exists outside the events of the story, but does not know the motivations or thoughts of all the characters. Rather, one character is the driver of the story, and the reader is given a closer peek into that character’s psyche than the others.

J. K. Rowling utilizes third-person limited narration in the Harry Potter novels. Even though the narrator is not Harry, and Harry is referred to as 'he,' the reader is allowed into Harry's thoughts—what he is wondering without saying out loud. We are also, like Harry, left uncertain about what other characters are thinking:

Three days later, the Dursleys were showing no sign of relenting, and Harry couldn't see any way out of his situation. He lay on his bed watching the sun sinking behind the bars on the window and wondered miserably what was going to happen to him. What was the good of magicking himself out of his room if Hogwarts would expel him for doing it? Yet life at Privet Drive had reached an all-time low. Now that the Dursleys knew they weren't going to wake up as fruit bats, he had lost his only weapon. Dobby might have saved Harry from horrible happenings at Hogwarts, but the way things were going, he'd probably starve to death anyway. — J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , 1999

Third-Person Objective

In third-person objective narration, the narrator reports the events that take place without knowing the motivations or thoughts of any of the characters. We know little about what drives them until we hear them speak or observe their actions. The resulting tone is often matter-of-fact, not colored by any opinions or commentary, nor of knowledge of what takes place outside the scene.

The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 25th. But in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner. — Shirley Jackson, "The Lottery," 1948

The points of view are: 

  • First person : Uses first-person pronouns to narrate the story from the subject’s perspective (e.g., “I jumped”)
  • Second person: Uses “you” to immerse the reader into the story (e.g., “You jumped”)
  • Third person: Uses third-person pronouns to tell the story from an outside perspective (e.g., “He jumped”)

Narrative point of view (also known as narrative perspective) refers to the viewpoint of the storyteller relative to the story. 

For example, autobiographies are written from the first-person point of view because the writer uses first-person pronouns such as “I” and “me” to recount their life story and experiences based on their personal perspective. 

The second-person point of view is the least common of the narrative perspectives. While some second-person novels exist (especially in gamebooks, where readers make decisions on how the story proceeds), they are quite rare. 

Instead, the second-person point of view is most often used in copywriting and other marketing material that directly addresses the audience by using the pronoun “you” (e.g., “You need to buy this”). Additionally, it is also used in instruction manuals, guidebooks, and recipes where the subject (i.e., “you”) isn’t explicitly stated (e.g., “Preheat the oven for fifteen minutes”). 

Lastly, the third-person point of view narrates the story from an exterior perspective. In other words, the narrator is not a part of the story itself but is simply telling it. The third-person perspective includes three different types: omniscient, limited, and objective.

Please note that although narrative points of view and grammatical persons have overarching elements, they are distinct concepts.

Both rely on first-person, second-person, or third-person pronouns to indicate the perspective being used.

For example, imagine your best friend goes on vacation, and when she comes back, she wants to tell you all about it. She’ll most likely share her experiences using the first-person point of view (e.g., “Every morning I took a short walk to the beach to watch the sunrise”).

Let’s return to the example of your best friend going on vacation and wanting to tell you all about it. Wanting to convince you to join her next year, she uses the second-person point of view (e.g., “Imagine this. Every morning, you take a short walk to the beach to watch the sunrise”). 

Second person involves the use of the following pronouns:

  • You (singular and plural)
  • Yours (singular and plural)

The second-person point of view is rarely used in novels. However, some books do incorporate second-person pronouns to deeply immerse the reader in the story. For example, gamebooks involve the reader by presenting various choices that eventually lead to different conclusions.

Many companies incorporate the second-person point of view in their advertisements to connect with the audience on a more personal level. Sometimes, the subject (i.e. “you”) is explicitly stated, other times it is not.

The third-person point of view refers to a narrator who is telling the story from an outside perspective. In other words, the narrator sees (and sometimes knows) everything that is going on in the story’s world and is recounting it to the reader. 

Let’s say your best friend goes on vacation, but this time she goes with her cousins, who cause chaos. She tells you the story about what happened during her vacation, including all the crazy things her cousins did, but she uses the third-person point of view to separate herself from her unruly cousins (e.g., “Every morning they would wake up the entire hotel with their loud commotion”). 

The third person involves the use of the following pronouns:

  • He/him/his/himself
  • She/her/hers/herself
  • It/its/itself
  • They/them/theirs/themselves

Keep in mind that the third person could also involve the use of proper names (e.g., “Billy cried during the movie”).

The third-person point of view is the most popular narrative perspective, with the narrator telling the story as someone who is not a part of the story itself but is simply recounting it. 

There are three different types of third-person narratives:

  • Omniscient: Provides an all-knowing viewpoint, where the narrator knows and can reveal the thoughts, feelings, and motivations of all characters involved in the story
  • Limited (or close): Narrator is limited to the perspective of a single character, only knowing what the specific character knows, sees, or experiences
  • Objective: Narrator maintains a strictly external viewpoint, avoiding sharing the thoughts or feelings of any character but instead presenting actions, dialogue, and events as they occur

Third Person Limited Point of View

Third person limited focuses on the experiences and thoughts of a single character.

The narrator can delve into this character’s inner world, providing insight into their motivations and emotions. However, you limit the narrative to what this character knows and perceives, which can help maintain suspense and build a strong connection between the reader and the character.

This type of POV allows for a deep exploration of a character’s inner life, creating a more intimate and personal narrative.

The reader can see the world through the character’s eyes, experiencing their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions firsthand. This can help build empathy and understanding for the character, making their journey more interesting and relatable.

However, third person limited also has its limitations.

Since you confine the narrative to a single character’s perspective, the reader only knows what this character knows.

This can create challenges in conveying information that the character is not aware of. The author must be careful to maintain the character’s voice and perspective consistently throughout the narrative

Third Person Omniscient Point of View

The third person omniscient narrator has an all-knowing perspective, with access to the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of all characters.

This type of POV allows the narrator to provide a comprehensive view of the story, jumping between different characters and settings. It can offer rich, layered storytelling but requires careful management to avoid overwhelming the reader with too much information.

This type of POV provides the greatest flexibility for the author, allowing them to explore multiple characters and subplots in depth.

The narrator can provide insights into the motivations and emotions of different characters, creating a more complex and nuanced narrative. The omniscient narrator can also provide exposition and background information, helping to build a rich and detailed story world.

However, third person omniscient also comes with its own challenges.

The author must be careful to manage the flow of information, ensuring that too many perspectives and details don’t overwhelm the reader. The omniscient narrator can sometimes create a sense of detachment, making it harder for the reader to connect with the characters on a personal level.

To effectively use this POV, authors need to balance the different perspectives and maintain a clear, cohesive narrative voice.

To better understand these POV types, let’s look at some examples from literature.

Third Person Objective Examples

In Ernest Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants , the third person objective POV is used to great effect. The narration is sparse, focusing solely on dialogue and actions, leaving readers to infer the underlying tensions and emotions:

“’What should we drink?’ the girl asked. She had taken off her hat and put it on the table.

‘It’s pretty hot,’ the man said.

‘Let’s drink beer.’

‘Dos cervezas,’ the man said into the curtain.

‘Big ones?’ a woman asked from the doorway.

‘Yes. Two big ones.’”

This style keeps readers at a distance, encouraging them to read between the lines.

Third Person Limited Examples

J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series predominantly uses third person limited, focusing on Harry’s perspective. This allows readers to experience the magical world through Harry’s eyes, deepening their connection with him:

“Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.”

Here, the narrative is confined to Harry’s experiences and feelings, providing a personal and immersive view.

Third Person Omniscient Examples

Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace is a classic example of third person omniscient.

The narrator provides insights into the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters, offering a panoramic view of the story:

“These words were spoken (in French) one evening in July 1805 by the well-known Anna Pavlovna Scherer, maid of honour and confidante of the Empress Maria Fyodorovna, as she welcomed the first person to arrive at her soirée, Prince Vasily Kuragin, a man of high rank and influence.”

Trump speaks from behind bulletproof glass at 1st outdoor rally since Butler shooting

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday delivered his latest campaign trail remarks protected by bulletproof glass and multiple visible counter snipers on top of nearby buildings – his first outdoor campaign event not at his properties since a gunman attempted his life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last month.

It was his third counterprogramming event of the week against the Democratic National Convention, continuing with the series of events in battleground states focused on key election issues this year.

In Asheboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday, Trump focused on national security, attacking the Biden-Harris administration on ongoing foreign conflicts, the Afghanistan withdrawal, American hostage deals and other issues.

Contrary to his intimate and small counterprogramming events in Pennsylvania and Michigan earlier this week, this was his biggest campaign event so far this week. Trump – with the American flag in the backdrop just like in Butler – speaking in an open field in front of thousands of supporters, including some who told ABC News they were at the Butler rally and said the set up in Asheboro reminded them of the Butler rally.

As ABC News previously reported, the U.S. Secret Service has ordered multiple sets of bulletproof glass panels to be stored around the country so it can be trucked to wherever it's needed, sources said. While the measure is typically reserved exclusively for sitting presidents, the Secret Service has made an exception following the attempt on Trump's life.

The Secret Service had recommended that Trump stop holding outdoor rallies last month after a gunman in Butler fired at him from a rooftop 400 feet from the stage, nicking his ear and killing a spectator in the crowd.

Since July 13, Trump has held nearly a dozen campaign events, all of them indoors.

Claiming the United States was respected during his administration, Trump repeatedly painted a grim picture of a possible Kamala Harris presidency, saying, "If Comrade Kamala wins this November, World War three is virtually guaranteed to happen. Everything she touches, she destroys."

Escalating his attacks on the sitting vice president, Trump began to directly blame Harris for the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, even falsely claiming that Harris met with Russian President Vladimir Putin days before the Russia-Ukraine war broke out.

"Remember when Biden sent Kamala to Europe to stop the war in Ukraine? She met with Putin, and then three days later, he attacked," Trump falsely claimed. "How did she do it? Think she did a good job. She met with Putin to tell him, don't do it. And three days later he attacked. That's when the attack started."

In reality, there's no public record of Harris meeting with Putin. Instead, she met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a security conference in Munich five days before the war broke out.

Trump also suggested Harris was responsible for the way U.S. troops left Afghanistan, saying "she was the last person in the room with Biden when the two of them decided to pull the troops out of Afghanistan."

"She had the final vote; she had the final say, and she was all for it," Trump said, later promising to hold the Biden-Harris administration accountable by asking for the resignations of "every single senior military official who touched the Afghanistan disaster."

Trump also claimed he would have handled the Afghanistan withdrawal better, claiming he has had conversations with the head of Taliban and that he "respected" him.

"Our adversaries knew that America was not to be trifled with when I was your commander in chief," Trump said. "... But since the Afghanistan catastrophe, it's been open season on America and our allies."

Trump also railed against "woke" military generals throughout his speech, claiming, "I know the good ones, the weak ones," praising his former military officials like Gen. Keith Kellogg.

Offering a glimpse of what his second term would look like, Trump declared "the days of blank checks for the weapons systems" are over and said he will build "a great Iron Dome" and give it to other countries like Israel.

"We will increase funding, but at the same time, the days of blank checks for the weapons systems over the past are over. I tell you what we will build, we're going to build a great Iron Dome over our country so that we don't have to get hit. We give it to other countries, we help Israel and other countries," Trump said.

Trump also said he would "aggressively" shift funding to "keep American on the cutting edge, investing in drones and other technology, saying he wants to invest "heavily" in "drones and robotics and artificial intelligence and hypersonics."

Even as he focused on policies, Trump dismissed the idea of stopping personal attacks on Harris – at one point, mocking his advisers for suggesting he should stick to policy and stray away from personal attacks. He then said that many speakers at the Democratic National Convention personally attacked him, referencing Barack and Michelle Obamas speeches last night.

Trump then polled the crowd to see if he should "get personal," followed by many in the crowd cheering. Prior to Obama's speech last night, Trump spoke highly of the former president, but quickly shifted his tone saying he was "nasty."

"Did you see Barack Hussein Obama last night? He was taking shots at your president. And so is Michelle. They always say, please stick to policy, don't get personal. Yet they are getting personal all night long, these people. Do I still have to stick to policy?"

"I try and be nice to people, you know, but it's a little tough when they get personal," Trump said.

"He was very nasty last night. I try and be nice," Trump said about former Obama's speech at the DNC Tuesday night.

"Should I not get personal? he asked the crowd. After few agreed, Trump quipped, "I don't know -- my advisers are fired."

A group of treasonous Helldivers 2 players branding themselves "Chaosdivers" are full-on rebelling against Super Earth , and in case you're wondering just how severe the situation has become, they've even designed their own logo and cape.

Seemingly in response to recent balancing changes deemed unsavory by the community, there's now an increasingly concentrated movement to simply ignore High Command's authority and give way to the Automatons and Terminids. The group has been gaining traction on social media, with the top of the Helldivers subreddit at the time of writing largely dominated by memes and discussion surrounding the mutineers. There's even a whole Chaosdivers subreddit with 365 current members.

It's unclear precisely how much of this whole campaign amounts to tongue in cheek bluster and how much actually translates to in-game behavior, but if it is all one big act, its actors sure are committed to the bit. Right now, the unofficial Helldivers 2 Galactic Map website paints a pretty grim picture, suggesting  all of this negative momentum is indeed having a significant impact on the liberation front.

Reddit user spikywobble shared their own experience with the Chaosdivers , saying their game host "would purposely kill whoever joined while typing traitorous stuff in chat and grief."

"I am fine with people expressing their opinion to AH but please do not take it as an excuse to ruin the dive of working people who only have a couple hours a week to play," said spikywobble.

In contrast, a Chaosdiver going by hitman2b on Reddit explained their own in-canon motivation for turning against Super Earth in response to a player appalled by what they were seeing on the battlefield: "To put it simply if we have to go with a lore explanation it would be Super Earth betrayed us Helldivers by making our weapons worse."

Chaosdiver organizers have even started sharing advertisements to recruit new members, and I'll be completely frank with y'all, they're pretty compelling. From pizza Fridays and free tanks to a fan-made custom cape representing the rebels, it's hard to deny the appeal. I mean, how bad are robots and bugs really?

As far as an end goal, there seems to be a few potential outcomes here. A) Arrowhead could just ignore the whole thing and wait for it to pass. B) It could acknowledge the coordinated outcry and dial back the nerfs with a big update. C) This is a hail mary, but it could make the rebel faction official by adding the branding into the game. Or D) Arrowhead could recognize Chaosdivers as a fun community-driven twist and warn Helldivers of their treasonous ways.

Arrowhead hasn't explicitly acknowledged the Chaosdivers yet, but it has responded to the backlash to recent balancing changes introduced in the Escalation of Freedom update . "We didn't hit our target with the last update," reads a recent announcement from game director Mikael E, who pledged to fix flamethrowers, "prevent excessive ragdolling," and "rework Chargers" in 60 days. More to the point, the announcement said Arrowhead will "continue to re-examine our approach to balance," adding that "balance should be fun, not 'balanced' for the sake of balance."

Whether that's enough to quell the rebellion will be decided by the rebels. That's democracy in action, folks.

The Helldivers 2 CEO also said even some developers are "disappointed" with Escalation of Freedom reaction: "The update had a bunch of nice stuff that isn't getting talked about".
