Speech on My Family – My Family Speech in English for Children and Students

February 17, 2022 by Study Mentor 12 Comments

The best gift God has given to all living beings on earth is a family. Getting a happy family is a blessing because not everyone in the world has it. The pleasure of living with your parents, fighting over petty with your siblings can just make you smile the moment you think about it.

My family has always supported me without any claim, from the moral teachings to love and support. For me, my family is like a strong pillar on which I can rely blindly whenever I need support. My family is always there to inspire and support me to overcome all life challenges and accomplish things. A relation is a unique kind of love that gives you all the lessons you need to live a healthy lifestyle.

My family is one of the world’s craziest families. We ‘re four members, my mother, my father, my younger brother, and me. While my dad is the one who works for a living, my mom is the boss of the house. My dad is a humble person. He doesn’t scold us. But, just the opposite, our mother. She needs us to remain vigilant, and she quite often scolds us.

  • I have a wonderful family, and I love every member of my family.
  • My family is made up of four members- father, mother, brother, and myself.
  • My dad is an engineer, and my mother, by profession, is a school teacher.
  • Every member of my family loves, respects, and cares for one another.
  • My family goes there once every two weeks for a picnic.
  • After dinner each night, we all like to spend time with each other.
  • My family has taught me strong lessons about our love, solidarity, and cooperation.

Why family is important?

Families are wealth, which not everyone is lucky enough to have. Sometimes, those who have don’t value this gift. Families are important because they assist in our development. They grow us all into a full-fledged human with individual identity. They always offer us a sense of comfort and a safe place to flourish within. We learn to socialize and develop our intellect through our families. Studies demonstrate that people who live with their families tend to be happier than those who live alone. In times of trouble, they serve as your pillar.

When the entire world questions you, families are the only ones who believe in you. Similarly, they ‘re the first to cheer you up when you’re down and out. Having a supportive family by your side is a great blessing. In ups and downs, my family has always been at my side. They taught me how to be a better human being. I will be grateful to my family forever for what they did to me. Without them, I can’t imagine my life. They are my first instructors and friends.

The atmosphere in my family

We have a peaceful environment at home. After school, we spent our time studying, playing and watching TV, which our mother certainly doesn’t like. Like other partners, my mum and father rarely fight. In reality, as soon as we see an argument coming up, one of them just withdraws, and a heated debate between them is just rare to see. That’s what I like most about them because I feel my parents are so sweet. It is just my brother and me who enjoy competing with each other.

However, we know that it is truly our love for one another that holds us together behind those battles. I just enjoy spending time at home with my parents and my brother. I feel like how bad it will be when we go on with our professional lives tomorrow, and we won’t be able to spend a lot of time together.

My family values

My family values are what I care so much about because they have made me what I am today, and I intend to pass on these great values in the future to my children. Every family has those things, acts, and values that they hold in high regard and so much appreciation

My Family Values include –

This is a strongly secured concept within my family. Since my childhood, my family has made me learn how to be honest and the benefits that lie inside

My mom believes that if the world and everyone in it shows love and kindness to each other, there will be no hatred, and wars will be wiped out.

This is a concept passed down in my family from generation to generation. My dad would say the best legacy you can give a child is education.

I don’t want to be wrongly addressed and give the wrong impression. So, the way we dress and our appearance matters a lot to us.

Why do I love my family?

My father is the world’s best father. I am looking a lot at my father because I want to take a lot of his habits and make them mine. He taught me to be satisfied with everything that I have. My mum is the world’s greatest chef. Without my mum, I don’t know where I will be today. I owe her quite a deal.

My brother is one of the greatest presents that I’ve received. He is the last kid, so if you know what I mean, this gives him the potential to be irritating.

Each family has one thing or the other, which they hold in high regard and continue to pass from one generation to another. That is what makes a family a single group not because blood binds us but because we share the same beliefs. We always have one reason to love our family. I love my family because it’s the best gift I’ve ever been able to ask for and the fact they’ve been there for me through the good, bad, and fun times. They are a complete word for me. They are always to support me during my tough times.

My Family Speech – Essay 2

Good morning/afternoon to everyone.

My name is John and I am here to present a speech on ‘ My Family ’. I love my family. I have my father , mother and a younger sister in my family. They take great care of me. A family is the most important and complete unit of a society.

This requires a lot of effort into building relationships with everyone belonging to your family. And I’m so glad to acknowledge the great support and affection I derive from my family that builds me up as a unique creation of God and encourages me to follow my dreams and passions.

Father is the head of the family and he is supposed to lead everyone because we all look up to him. My father is a much disciplined man. Henceforth, he wants to keep us all in strict discipline.

‘Early to bed, early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise’

And that’s kind of the principle of our family. My daddy makes us go to sleep early and wakes us up early. Sometimes, very early! Although it seems so disruptive at the moment when I can’t get to be lazy sometimes but I know that he does it for our good and I respect him for that.

My daddy is my role model . He is more special to me than Superman and Spiderman because he can do what no one can. His sweet affection is so dearly communicated while we sit every night at the dinner table and talk about our day. My daddy also taught me to pray.

So whenever I am afraid I close my eyes and pray to God and I feel peace in my heart. Well, yes I am very naughty and I get spankings from him sometimes. Like, when I disturb him during work hours or I disrespectfully yell at people. He teaches me to respect my elders.

my family paragraph

He initiates me into things I don’t understand. He always pushes me to work harder, to go an extra mile even when I don’t think I can, I do it anyway! He always emphasizes the importance of education.

He makes me believe that I have powerful capabilities and I dream to be a very wonderful, successful and brave person as he is, full of integrity. He tells me every day how much he loves me and I’m ever thankful for him.

My mother is my favourite. She is the sweetest person on earth. She doesn’t scold me much; instead she even saves me from daddy’s spankings sometimes because she’s very kind. She is also very beautiful. She doesn’t go out for work because she has to take care of my younger sister.

She takes out time for me every day no matter how tired she is and helps me with my homework and talks about a whole lot of sensible things that teach me to be a person of strong moral character. She is a wise woman. Unlike many others, she is a good steward and she likes to spend her money very wisely.

She maintains order in the house and makes our house look so beautiful. Although sometimes when I leave my room so messed up she scolds me but then she cleans it and makes it so tidy that I’m hardly able to recognize it any more. She makes me so happy that sometimes I dance around to show off me elegance and she joins me.

Little things like that make my heart rejoice and make my day. She cooks the most delicious food in the world. I dread those days when I will have to leave my home someday to go away for studies; I don’t know how I will survive without her. She is God’s most wonderful gift to me.

My younger sister has not started school yet but she’s very mischievous just as I am. We are kind of click together. Sometimes I playfully irritate her and she cries to mummy and then I feel bad. So I try to take good care of her too.

I love my family very much and I’m so grateful for my parents.

World Family Day

Why World Family Day is Celebrated ?

To remind and recognize the importance of a family, general assembly of United Nations proposed to celebrate international/world family day on every 15 of May, this decision was taken in 1993 and from 1994 to onwards, this day is celebrated all over the world. Every year the general secretary United Nations suggests a specific motto in the relevance of that day. For example, this year 2015, the phrase set was “Men in charge? Gender equality and children’s rights in contemporary families”, so all the meetings, conferences and programs held on 15 May 2015 covered the discussions on the mentioned phrase. This motto was about the male dominance in a family, male and female equality and protection of children rights in a family relationship.

Purpose of Celebration

The main purpose to celebrate this day is to raise awareness of individual rights in a family, creation of friendly environment among the parents and children, and to recognize the importance of a prosperous family relationship.

It is the need to time to develop awareness of a complete family, because there are many children, boys and girls who are the victims of broken family relationships and as a result they have involved in unlawful activities and destroying their lives in doing criminal activities. People need to understand that separation and anger is not the solution of problem, patience, love, care and discussion is the solution of problem.

International Family Day: ‘Listen First’ Helps Families Worldwide

speech for family day

The International Day of Families is observed by the United Nations (UN) each year on May 15th to spread awareness about the benefits of family systems and the social and economic processes affecting families.

The family is one of the most powerful institutions affecting children's overall development and well-being. It can either protect young people from or put them at a higher risk of substance use and other risky behaviors. "Effective drug use prevention strategies should therefore focus on the healthy and safe development of children and youth to realize their potential. One powerful way of doing so is strengthening parenting skills and the conditions that support healthy, happy families," explains Ms. Giovanna Campello, Chief UNODC Prevention, Treatment & Rehabilitation Section.

To that end, 'Listen First' is a UNODC initiative, based on science, investing in materials to aid children and youth’s well-being, their families, and their communities. It emphasizes that listening to children and youth is the first step to helping them grow healthy and safe and encourages other positive behaviors that parents and caregivers can do to help their children’s healthy development.

Research proves that warm, caring, and involved parenting are some of the most important factors protecting especially young children and early adolescents from initiating substance use. On the other hand, children growing up in a marginalized and deprived community with little or no family support, and children subjected to family neglect and abuse, are especially at risk.

The Science of Family Activities

When parents are positively involved in their children’s lives, for example helping them with their homework, staying informed about their lives and friendships, and maintaining an open communication, young people are more well-adjusted, perform better in school and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors including violence, risky sexual behavior and substance use.

Quality family time builds stronger, more connected families. Doing family activities together, such as sports, cooking, and playing games or music, helps families bond and build trust. In addition, it improves communication and creates more self-confident children.

Studies have linked having family dinners together to increased resiliency in children, higher academic achievement, improved mental and physical health, and reduced risk of substance abuse and eating disorders.

'Listen First' provides families and those working with families with science-based information presented in a fun, engaging way.

Teachers, health workers, and other professionals working in the field of prevention who are interested in using the materials are encouraged to get in touch .

International Family Day – May 15, 2024

Founded by the United Nations (UN) in 1994, the International Day of Families is observed every May 15 to honor the importance of families. Families—both traditional and non-traditional—are the foundation of society. Our most formative years are spent with our families and those people are likely the most important people in our lives, so they should be celebrated. Let’s spend time today finding ways to protect the family unit in society by starting at home with our own!

What is the theme for International Day Of Families 2021?

According to the United Nations, the theme for the 2021 observance of the International Day of Families is “Socially just transition towards sustainable development: the role of digital technologies on social development and well-being of all.”

When is International Family Day 2024?

Just like in “The Godfather,” the importance of family is emphasized on International Day of Families on May 15.

History of International Family Day

“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” – Michael J. Fox

The family unit began with the first humans. While families today may look different than they did thousands of years ago, they are as equally important now as they were then. The United Nations believed families important enough to recognize them through a day of observance and, in 1994, chose May 15 as International Day of Families.

As parents, we want to give our children the best start in life we can. The foundation created in a family has been shown in numerous studies to dramatically impact a child’s success. The more stable the family environment for a child, the more likely they will be healthier – both mentally and physically.

Communities all over the world face obstacles that jeopardize the stability of the family. The UN began to recognize this in the 1980s as the Secretary General promoted awareness among decision-makers and the public. The UN went on to establish this day of observance and, each year, select a different family-focused theme to address world-wide challenges around education, poverty, health, and work/family balance, just to name a few.

This year on World Family Day, learn about some of the social, economic, and demographic factors impacting families around the world and see how you can start by strengthening your own.

International Family Day timeline

The family tree of Confucius, a Chinese philosopher born in 479 B.C., has been maintained for over 2,500 years.

In the UK, Rob Parsons founds Care for the Family, a non-profit organization strengthening families through marriage counseling and tools, positive parenting courses, and bereavement support.

The largest for-profit genealogy company helps over 14 million subscribers access documents to find their family history.

Traditions for International Family Day

On International Day of Families, celebrate all the eccentric traditions that you and your family share. Every family is unique, and there are countless stories, memories, and adventures we all have shared with our families that are significant only to us. Just like Festivus was a tradition at George Costanza’s home in “Seinfeld,” the traditions carried on within families are all relived today.

It is also very easy to take our family for granted, so take this day as an opportunity to share with your family how you feel about them and how grateful you are to your parents, siblings, and even extended family for providing you with the necessities of life and a whole lot of TLC. Pick a restaurant your family loves or, better yet, one that you all went to while you were growing up, and have a nice evening chattering with your family and catching up on each other’s lives.

Today I am going to talk to you about an important and natural thing of our social and cultural system “Family”. Family is an important part of everyone’s life and it provides you with a great opportunity for relationships, love, and support.

In the family we have parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents who help us in every difficulty and give us a sweet company in every moment of happiness. Here each person has their own specific place and each has their own circle of relationships that form relationships with each other. In the family we find love, and togetherness.  The important thing is that family teaches us to stand with each other even in different times and conditions. In every journey of life, whether it is  big or small, family is always our companion. We are also taught moral and religious values in the family. Parents show us the way to live in the ways of truth and goodness. Family holds a good and stable place in our life. We should remember that the welfare and success of every person is based on the strength of family and relationships. Always value your family and build good relationships.

At last, I would like to end up my speech with this famous quotation of a famous revolutionary leader, Nelson Mandela

5 Minutes Speech on Family

Dear teachers and students!

Greetings to all. and thank you to all of you to give me chance to give a speech.

I feel so fortunate to have a family that is so loving and encouraging. My parents, my older sister, and I make up my family.

My parents have always taken care of me, giving me all I require and encouraging me in all that I do. They have inspired me to always be my best self and have taught me priceless lessons.

In addition to being my sister, my sister is also my closest friend. Even though we may have had our fair share of disagreements while growing up, we have always stood by each other and maintain a close relationship.

My family and I enjoy being together, which is one of my favourite things about them. We constantly find ways to have a good time and create lasting memories, whether it’s watching a movie at home or taking a family vacation.

Every day I am thankful for my family and can’t picture living without them. They helped mould me into the person I am today, and for that, I will always be grateful.

Overall, I am extremely grateful to have my family in my life since they mean the world to me. I will always treasure the time we spend together since I love them so much.

Welcome to the family speeches

By:  Susan Dugdale  | Last modified: 04-23-2021

- a wedding or engagement welcome speech template

Here's a handy template to use if you've been asked to make a speech welcoming a newcomer into your family. Perhaps the bride or groom at a wedding reception. Or maybe one or other of the happy pair at their engagement party.

It ticks off the main requirements of this type of welcome speech very effectively.

These are to make the person(s) you're giving the speech to:

  • feel at home,
  • at ease and,

Image: portrait of a family at dinner. Text: how to give a speech to welcome someone new to your family.

Short, simple and sincere

The speech also sticks to the SSS rule: short, simple and sincere.

Nobody really appreciates a lengthy, shapeless ramble - a meandering tour through family stories, or thoughts delivered randomly, as they occur, without real consideration.

If you've ever sat through ''a few words'' that rapidly multiplied to become an extended monologue, you'll know what I mean. It's  an audience endurance test and often embarrassing.

That's an example of what you don't want to do.

Your words extend a hand of friend and kinship on behalf of your immediate and extended family. Keep them brief, on track and,  deliver them with a smile.

Sample welcome speech template

- adapt it for a wedding or an engagement party   .

There's room to personalize the speech with a couple of succinct stories to fit the occasion or you could just leave it as it is.

If you don't add anything, the speech is about one and a half minutes long.

To hear the speech play the video

The voice you're hearing belongs to me, Susan.

Mary {Replace the name Mary with the name of the person you are welcoming} - welcome to the family!

Family, tribe, clan, kin, group - call it what you will: it's us - all of us!

We're mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, cousins, 3rd cousins, even 53rd cousins, old and young, generations of us, linked together through shared DNA and history.

Look around. The faces smiling back at you are now your people too.

And you thought you were just marrying Dean {Replace the name Dean with the right one} didn't you?

We are the bonus prize!

But seriously, we're delighted that Dean {Change the name to the right one.} had the good sense to choose you to marry.

Over the time leading up to today we've seen you are so right for each other.

{This is the place to insert a couple of examples or stories illustrating how good these two are together.}

Now we look forward to supporting you both, and sharing your lives through the many years ahead.

On behalf of us all; we're honored that you're now one of us.

Rehearse your speech

To be truly effective when you deliver your speech you need to rehearse it.

It needs to be said aloud many times so that you get the flow of it, and can deliver it confidently.

Please don't be tempted to give the speech without practicing it, particularly if you're unused to public speaking.  You create so much extra stress for yourself, and that pressure can cause embarrassing slip ups, which will make it worse.

Speech on Family

Family is like a tree with deep roots. It’s where your story begins.

Your family shapes who you are. They love, support, and guide you as you grow.

1-minute Speech on Family

Ladies and gentlemen, it is a great pleasure to speak to you today about the importance of family. Family is the basic unit of society, and it plays a crucial role in shaping our lives and personalities. It provides love, care, and support, which are essential for our growth and development.

In a family, we learn about love, trust, and unity. Family members teach each other values and morals, guiding us on the right path. They are our first teachers, who help us learn essential life skills. A strong family bond lays the foundation for a healthy and happy life.

Furthermore, family is a source of emotional support during tough times. They stand by us, offering a helping hand when we face challenges. They celebrate our successes and share our joys, making our lives more meaningful and fulfilling. They are also our most honest critics, pushing us to improve and become better individuals.

In today’s fast-paced world, spending quality time with family is more important than ever. It helps strengthen relationships, reduce stress, and improve emotional well-being. Simple activities such as having meals together, engaging in hobbies, and taking family vacations can create lasting memories and enhance familial bonds.

In conclusion, family is the cornerstone of our lives, shaping who we are and providing us with love, support, and guidance. It is our responsibility to nurture and cherish these relationships. Let us all make an effort to spend more time with our loved ones, appreciate their presence in our lives, and create beautiful memories together.

Thank you for your attention, and may you always cherish the love and support of your family.

2-minute Speech on Family

Ladies and gentlemen, today, I would like to talk about a topic that is dear to everyone’s heart, and that is ‘Family’. Family is the basic unit of society, the foundation upon which we build our lives. It is a group of individuals bonded by love, respect, and a sense of belonging.

The significance of family in our lives cannot be overstated. Our family is our first introduction to love, companionship, and security. It is in the warmth of our family that we learn the values of trust, understanding, and compassion. Our upbringing in a family environment shapes our character, emotional well-being, and long-term development.

Family is also a source of strength and support. Throughout our lives, we face various challenges and milestones, and we often turn to our families for guidance, encouragement, and comfort. In times of crisis, our family is a safety net that helps us weather the storm. When we feel overwhelmed, it is our family that nurtures us, helps us regain our strength, and empowers us to face the world with renewed determination.

Our families play a critical role in our development as individuals, teaching us essential life skills and values. From our first steps as toddlers to our first day of school, our family is there to guide us, support us, and celebrate our achievements. They teach us the importance of honesty, humility, and hard work. Through their examples, we learn to face life’s challenges with courage and resilience.

Moreover, family traditions and customs contribute to our cultural heritage and identity. These traditions, passed down through generations, help preserve our roots and connect us to our ancestors. These shared experiences strengthen our familial bonds and provide us with a sense of continuity and belonging.

As we grow older and venture into the world, our families may change and expand. New members join through marriage or birth, and we form our own families. We carry the values and lessons we have learned from our parents and grandparents and pass them on to our children, ensuring that the legacy of love and togetherness continues.

However, it is important to acknowledge that the concept of family is fluid and evolving. Families come in various shapes and sizes, and no two families are exactly alike. Some families consist of a single parent, others are blended with step-parents and step-siblings, and some families are formed through adoption or fostering. What matters most is the love and support that exists within these diverse family structures.

In our fast-paced, modern world, it is easy to become so caught up in our daily routines that we forget to cherish the time we have with our families. Let us remember to prioritize our family life and maintain open communication with our loved ones. This way, our family bonds remain strong, and we can continue to grow together.

In conclusion, family is the cornerstone of our lives, and it plays an integral role in shaping who we are as individuals. The love, support, and guidance we receive from our families are invaluable gifts that we carry with us throughout our lives. Our families are our safe haven, our source of strength, and our teachers in the journey of life. Let us celebrate and cherish our families, for they are the foundation of love, understanding, and happiness in our lives.

Thank you all for your attention, and may you continue to nurture and cherish your family bonds.

Speech on Importance of Family Values Free PDF Download

Family values are the virtues of an individual that is valued and passed on from generation to generation. In our country India, everybody has high regard for families and family values and when trouble knocks the family members defend and protect each other. However, with changing times the definition of family values has also changed with more youngsters wanting to live separate from their parents. This aspect of family values is prevalent in western culture, and it looks like our country is also adapting such things.

Most individuals don't think about family values until they need to teach their children a lesson in reaction to an unpleasant conduct. Family values, on the other hand, should not be disregarded. Thinking about your family values and imparting them to your children at a young age might educate your children how to behave when you are not around. What you do and say has an impact on your children. Encourage healthy family decisions and behavior by living a life that makes you proud of your family. Throughout life, important family values and ethical concepts will serve as guides.

For this speech on the importance of family values in an English article, we will explore different ways to present it and what can be conveyed. It can be a long speech on the importance of family values or a short speech on the importance of family values.

Long Speech on Importance of Family Values

This form of speech is useful for students in grades 8-12 who have to deliver a 5-minute long speech.

Good morning everyone, respected teachers, and my dear friends. I am Abc (mention your name) here to speak on the topic of the importance of family values. Living in India, we all know no matter wherever you are, whenever one interacts with you the first question one asks is about family. It is in our culture and tradition that it is believed that you carry your family name and values everywhere. Family truly gives us an identity in the society and the world we live in.

Whenever one achieves success in life and does a good deed, the first remark is he/she must be from a good family or he/she is so well brought up by their families. That is the reason the family values are very highly regarded and rightly so. Whether a child becomes a responsible adult or an irresponsible adult, depends on the values they grew up with.

Family values are the principles or standards of behavior that one considers useful and deserving of worth and that inform one's judgment of what is important in life. Earlier, in India, families lived together. Every member of the family, grandparents, parents, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The children will adapt and learn not what you say but what you do. The children see the way the elders of the family behave with each other and learn what is important based on their actions. If a family behaves respectfully, with love and care for each other, then these values will be deemed important for everyone in the family. When in terms of a crisis or problem, it is upon the family to proceed with patience, dignity, and grace. And arguments or disagreements within the family should also be handled in a mature manner without humiliating and behaving condescendingly to anyone.

It is what one sees in a family, they emulate even outside the daily dynamics in other relationships. There is a family outside of blood relations as well, the ones we choose. Our friends who become family also teach and add a great deal of value to our lives. The teachers who teach us and make us realize our purpose in life also become our family and their taught values are truly irreplaceable.

Now even when joint family systems are no longer seen and more nuclear families are being created, the importance of teaching and practicing good values will always remain intact. Even in a family of four, if love, joy, and togetherness are valued then that will be passed on along generations.

We must remember that even if the world is against us, it is our family that will support us and lead us to new heights of understanding of ourselves. If we falter, the values we learned from our family must be taught a way to admit, apologize, and actually show changed behavior.

Family is something that will be bound to us always and we must respect that whether we live far or near. And one is never alone in the world because of family. I thank my family, friends, and teachers for accepting me, teaching me so many things, and allowing me to learn from my mistakes.

Short Speech on Importance of Family Values

This form of a short speech is helpful for students in grades 4-7 who can deliver a 3-minute speech based on the points covered here.

Good morning everyone, respected Principal, Teachers, and my dear friends. I am so happy for this opportunity to deliver a speech on the importance of family values. I feel happy to talk about such a relatable topic.

We all are an amalgamation of all the relationships in our life we share from our birth, childhood, and adult life. Anything that resonates with us, we try to be that. The most influential impact we have is from our family. My friends often praise me for my helpful nature. I would like to credit my parents for teaching me the importance of being helpful with examples.

All the good in me is because of my family. We are a close-knit small family, earlier we lived with our grandparents, because of my parents’ job we moved to the city a couple of years ago. My parents have always valued family above anything else in their lives, they learned this from their parents.

They have taught me the importance of being honest, trustworthy, patient, and taking personal responsibility.

I have learned to be courageous and persistent because I have seen my parents never giving up if any problem arises. I have seen them work with integrity and uncompromising ethical values that I respect a lot. I hope I can be like that when I grow up. We must learn from our parents and try to be better people who can add value to the world we live in through our acts of kindness and bravery. Let’s live with love and humility in the world just like we do with our families.

10 Line Speech on Importance of Family Values

This format of speech is helpful for students in grades 1-3 to understand the meaning in simple words.

Family is the most important aspect of everyone’s life, especially a child.

And children learn from what they see and experience more than what they hear.

A child who is brought up with love, care, compassion, respect, and understanding will inculcate such values.

These values become inherent and grow when they carry on with other relationships be it with siblings, cousins, and friends.

Earlier people lived in joint families set up now it is changing to nuclear families.

In joint families, everyone is always there for each other to help and support in case one needs help.

In nuclear families, mostly all are working and busy so they work and make efforts to be there for each other.

It is not the number of family members that matters, it is the environment and the surroundings one lives in that hold a greater value.

The environment a family provides must be a safe place where fairness, caring, responsibility, humility, and kindness are practised and appreciated.

When a family has strong core values they live in peace and harmony for many generations with such values.

FAQs on Speech on Importance of Family Values

What are family values?

Family values, also known as familial values, are traditional or cultural values that connect to the structure, function, roles, beliefs, attitudes, and goals of a family. Traditional or conservative beliefs that are considered to enhance the healthy functioning of the family and the strengthening of society's fabric. The traditional family structure, gender norms, and child care are all values. While these roles within the family unit are fast shifting, it is critical to ensure that all of the family's needs are met, whether they are met by the man, the woman, or both of them together as partners. There are several key family values that you may want to instill in your children. The values listed below are by no means fully comprehensive.

Why are family values important?

Individual family members, the entire family as a unit, and the society in which we live are all affected by family values. Most Families will share a shared set of values, such as a love of freedom and a belief in democracy, as citizens . Family values assist us in determining what is good and wrong. Values encompass not just our morality but also our roles, beliefs, and attitudes. Family values serve to establish male and female roles as well as family interactions. Family values play an important role in teaching your children what is right and wrong. To put it another way, having strong values can assist your children in achieving their goals. Adult children are more likely to make decisions that you will approve of. Younger members of the family will be better able to resist peer pressure and make wise decisions.

What does family values reflect?

Our family values reflect who we are as people and how we parent. Our children acquire life lessons when we explain and embody those ideals. They learn to express themselves, solve difficulties, learn from their mistakes, and acquire other talents and abilities that contribute to a happy life. Parents are also educated. Some parents have been persuaded that grades are the most crucial indicator of their child's progress. While no one can deny that academic learning is essential for success in 21st-century jobs, parents can teach their children so much more via their family values.

How can family values be instilled?

To instill strong family values, you must first choose what values are essential to you and what you want to instill in your children. As a parenting team or with the entire nuclear family, write a family purpose statement. Then, wherever possible, utilise family activities and excellent parenting to reinforce those basic values. When your children accomplish something that supports the ideals you're teaching them, for example, praise them. Recognize that your actions play a significant role in educating others through example. Make holiday and weekend rituals, as well as family routines, that promote the values you consider important. Spend time with your family and hold a family meeting if you need to talk or refocus on something. Having family rules in place allows them to know what to do and how to respond in challenging situations.

Which values must be instilled in kids?

It is very important to teach the significance of respect. Kids should know how to give respect to elders. Secondly, honesty is another value which is to be taught. As it is said, ”Honesty is the best policy.” Make sure your kid doesn’t lie. Empathy and compassion towards all living creatures is what makes a place better to live in. So, instill compassion in toddlers. Start feeding stray animals as this is one way of teaching compassion. Gratitude is another important aspect of life. It is important for everybody to be satisfied/ gratified to be happy. Your kid should be happy with what he has. Positive outlook towards life is another crucial value.

Speech On International Day of Families

A very Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening to Honorable  Sir/Madam, respected teachers, seniors, and my dear friends, Warm Greetings to Everyone!

Thank you all for taking out time and being present at this seminar session. Today, we are here to celebrate the most important day, ‘International Day of Families’ .

Today, May 15 is celebrated as the International Day of Families ; this day highlights the importance of families. It aims at fostering equality, bringing a fuller sharing of domestic responsibilities, and employment opportunities. The day was proclaimed by the UN (United Nations) General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/47/237 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families.

The family is the basic and natural unit of society, which plays a critical role of nurturing and caring for individual family members, from children to youth, men, women, people living with disabilities, and the older generation. Families bear the primary responsibility for the development, education, and socialization of children. They provide material and non-material care and support to their members and are a backbone of intergenerational solidarity and social cohesion. Celebrating the International Day for Families also brings into focus the importance of family solidarity wherein members of the family work together to sustain the unit through challenges, trials, and tribulations.

A family has a worth of foundation-pillar in the development of society as social laws and norms are the anticipated form of family bonding and strength. We all know is not easy living with one’s family. With so many oddballs that make up a family, it is tough to find common ground. Yet, a family is the most refined of all human relationships. Mother, sister, brother, father, and you may make up a family. But what ties you all together is that invisible umbilical cord… the cord of love and sacrifice. It is a cord that should never be cut as it is the cord that binds the family together.

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brings into sharp focus the importance of investing in social policies protecting the most vulnerable individuals and families. It is the families who bear the brunt of the crisis, sheltering their members from harm, caring for out-of-school children, and, at the same time, continuing their work responsibilities.

Families have become the hub of intergenerational interactions that support us in this crisis. Under economic duress, poverty deepens. In times of uncertainty stress increases often are resulting in growing violence against women and children. That is why the support for vulnerable families who have lost their income, those in inadequate housing, those with young children, older persons, and persons with disabilities is imperative now more than ever.

Family is a source to overcome social and individual fears, a family is the part and parcel of our joys and distress; family helps us come out of economic burdens as every member of the family suffers during poverty and economical failures. Relationships between children and their parents, parents, and grandparents, or children, and their grandparents are called intergenerational relationships.

Ladies and Gentleman, one of the major challenges facing families is the problem of domestic violence, especially gender-based violence. We need to address the violence within our families and be good role models for our children. Violence against women, many of whom are mothers, remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in our country. It has far-reaching consequences endangering the lives of women and children and harming families and communities. Preventing family violence should be a key priority for all of us.

We call on all sectors of society to work with us in a quest to build strong families. These efforts must start with programs to strengthen families by protecting vulnerable members of society such as children, women, people with disabilities, and older persons.

Hope you all have a great time.

Thank you all.

My Family Speech in English - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

When we say or hear the word family, it refers to a special bond shared by the people among themselves. A family is a place where we can feel love, care, satisfaction, etc. They are the most important people in our life and are irreplaceable and their value can’t be compared with anything. From birth till death it is the most precious and treasured thing in the world. Family is the fundamental unit of this society. Family is the one that gives us unconditional love. In times of difficulties, family is the one that always stands by your side unconditionally. I can always count on my family in any problem, they are the one who taught me and guided me in my life. Family is really a blessing for everyone and it’s wonderful to have it.

10-Lines On My Family Speech

Short speech on my family, long speech on my family, importance of family.

My Family Speech in English - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Family is the one that teaches us to speak, to walk, to make difference between right or wrong, etc.

Family members take care of each other in times of sickness, and difficulties.

Family guides us to walk on the correct path and stops us from doing anything wrong.

They scold us whenever we make mistakes for our own good.

They sacrificed their desires to fulfill our demands.

They will always stand by your side and you will always feel safe with them.

Even in life threatening situations they will always prioritize us over themselves.

They always choose the best for us since birth like best doctor, teacher, school, college and almost everything.

They are our first teacher and our friend in our lives.

They work tirelessly for our sake.

Family is the best gift that we can ask for from God. I treasure my family with my whole heart. I have a very loving and caring family. I live in a joint family and every day is wonderful just being with them. The kind of affection and love and affection that we got from our family can’t be put into words. We get our strength from our family and they are the backbone of our life.

Childhood is a time to bond with our family, but as we get older and become adults, our hectic schedules can often cause those feelings to disappear. We feel restricted in the family environment since we are heavily impacted by western culture and civilisation. But we must understand that when adversity strikes, our families are what keep us going. Money is transient, but our family's love is everlasting. The family should be everything to us. But only if we live together does it continue to be a family. The family's ideals are fulfilled when the members remain close and comprehend one another through good and bad times. Families eat together, laugh together, and create memories while sharing both joy and sorrow.

Therefore, we must uphold our family values wherever we go. It influences who we are and sets us out from the herd. We should never compromise family values and their significance as we age.

In our country family is the most essential thing that can’t be measured in terms of any value. God's greatest gift to all living things on earth, including people, is a family. A person cannot be whole and happy without their family and their affection. A family is a group of people with whom you may share both happy and sad moments. Family is there for you in the most trying times. You may not find the warmth and love you need anywhere else than in your family.

It’s difficult to remember everything that our family has been doing for us because everything that we have today is because of our family. They are the ones who looked after us when we were young and no matter how much we grow up we will be young in their eyes. When we can’t walk properly they are the one who hold our hands and give us confidence and tell us that we are not alone. They are the ones who play with us when we don’t have friends. We depend on our family for almost everything. They take care of everything that we need in our daily lives. No matter what the situation is, they will always be there to help you in your difficult times.

Family As Safety Clause

In addition to the physical, mental, and intellectual development of a person's character, a family offers protection against external dangers and evils, meaning that a person is shielded from all types of external failures within their own family. All of our needs and wishes are fulfilled by the family, which also provides a safe atmosphere for us. Despite coming from a middle-class household, my parents do their utmost to accommodate all of my and my siblings' demands.I feel more connected to my family as a result of the love my extended family has for me, and it also makes me more aware of my duties to my own family. During their difficult time, every member of the family experiences difficulties together.

Pillars of Strength

In good times and bad, our family has always been by our side. We have never felt weak in our life because our family keeps on giving us strength. They are always ready to cross any line when it comes to our security without even thinking about themselves. Family members always backed each other and overcame any difficult situation. Their strength lies in unity and they share a special bond that has formed with love and trust.

I was born in a joint family and we live together. The kind of person I am today is because of my family. They are an integral part of my life. My family always taught me to be a good person and guided me to the path of an honest person. Whenever I make mistakes they scold me. At first I used to get angry at them but now when I look back I get why they scold me. Whenever I had a hard time my family seemed to be more worried than me. Honestly I can’t express how wonderful it is to have a family. I have a younger sister and an elder sister and we used to fight a lot and somehow that feels great and my family used to laugh at us for being silly. I am a college student now and I live in a hostel and everyday I miss my family. No matter where we go in our lives, in the end we will return to our family because that’s the place we truly belong.

International Family Day Speech

Address by the MEC for Social Development Northern Cape , Mr. Alvin Botes , on the occasion of the International Day for Families , at Concordia , Namakwa

15 May 2013 Programme Director MEC for……. Members of the Media Distinguished Guests Ladies and Gentlemen Good Morning , Goeie More , It is a privilege for me to address you on the commemoration of the International Day for Families , which gives us a platform to acknowledge the important role played by Families in society. May 15 is celebrated as the International Day of the Family. This day highlights the importance of families. It aims at fostering equality, bringing a fuller sharing of domestic responsibilities and employment opportunities.   The family is the basic and natural unit of society, which plays a critical role of nurturing and caring for individual family members, from children, to youth, men, women, people living with disabilities and the older generation. Families bear the primary responsibility for the development, education and socialization of children. They provide material and non-material care and support to their members and are a backbone of intergenerational solidarity and social cohesion.   Celebrating the International Day for Families also brings into focus the importance of family solidarity wherein members of the family work together to sustain the unit through challenges, trials and tribulations. We all know is not easy living with one's family. With so many oddballs that make up a family, it is tough to find common ground. Yet, a family is the most refined of all human relationships. Mother, sister, brother, father, and you may make up a family. But what ties you all together is that invisible umbilical cord... the cord of love and sacrifice. It is cord that should never be cut as it is the cord that binds the family together. The theme for this year’s event is Advancing Social Integration and Intergenerational solidarity within families and the communities , which is precisely about advancing all generations in a family and keeping that cord uncut and solid so that we can feed from one another. Relationships between children and their parents, parents and grandparents, or children and their grandparents are called intergenerational relationships Intergenerational solidarity mostly relates to reciprocal care, support and exchange of material and non-material resources between family members, typically younger and older generations. The demographic transition, changes in family structures and living arrangements as well as migration often negatively impact intergenerational relations and solidarity. Intergenerational programs are defined as activities that increase cooperation, interaction or exchange between any two generations. These programs purposefully bring together people of different age groups in ongoing, mutually beneficial, planned activities, designed to achieve specified program goals. At the same time, Intergenerational programs provide a supportive environment conducive to supporting emotional, intellectual, and social growth and physical activity. The concept of intergenerational solidarity and programmes need to be emphasized within our province in order to promote social cohesion amongst families and communities. On the 27 March 2013, we launched the Intergenerational Pilot Project in this very district of Namakwa in Calvinia at the Sonskyn Service Centre. It is a project that brings the youth, adults and older persons together. Inter-generational programs are defined as activities that bring together individuals of different ages as partners to explore, study, and work towards a shared goal, which foster cooperation and promote interaction among generations including children, youth and older persons. These programs can be youth serving older persons, older persons serving youth, or youth and older adults serving together. Research was conducted by the youth of Calvinia West, after they had been trained by the National office, to determine the needs of older persons in the area. The findings highlighted the need for inter-generational programmes, as well as economic empowerment programmes. Ten beneficiaries, consisting of five older persons and youth each were identified and trained to implement a catering business, Sunshine Catering Sunshine Catering is now ready to start operating as a fully-fledged catering business. As a next step they will register on the service provider databases of the different Government Departments to access catering opportunities, as well as functions within the community. My appeal to the community of Concordia is for follow in the footsteps of Calvinia and see how a similar project can be initiated to enhance the relationship between all the generations of Concordia and surrounding areas. The Benefits of Inter-Generational programs for the community are:

  • Inspires Collaboration : as it can unite community members to take action on public policy issues that address human needs across the generations.
  • Expands Services : Intergenerational community service programs can expand the level of services to meet more needs and address more issues.
  • Maximises Financial Resources : When groups represent young and old, funders are more likely to respond positively because they can see broad-based community support. Intergenerational programs can save money and stretch scarce resources by sharing sites and/or resources.

The Youth will benefit in the following ways:

  • Enhances Social Skills : Interaction with older persons enhances communication skills, promotes self-esteem, develops problem-solving abilities, and fosters friendships across generations. Positive attitudes are developed regarding sense of purpose and community service.
  • Increases Stability : Youth gain positive role models with whom they can interact on a regular basis. Older persons as volunteers help to provide youth with consistency through mentoring and coaching.

Benefits for Older Persons are:

  • Enhances Socialisation : Older persons remain productive, useful, and contributing members of society. They increase interaction with youth and engage more with one another to prevent isolation in later years.
  • Stimulates Learning: Older persons learn new innovations and technologies from their younger counterparts.

GREEN PAPER ON FAMILIES The Green Paper for families has been developed and it is in the process of finalization. The aim of the Green Paper is to promote family life and strengthen families in South Africa through adopting a holistic approach to families as compared to other policies or legislation that are primarily focusing on individuals. It promotes the provision of integrated, coordinated and comprehensive social welfare services through collaborative partnership with government departments , NGO’s and civil society to address the diverse needs of families. The policy framework further advocates for the establishment of a coordinating, implementing and monitoring structure which will ensure that the best interest of the (3) groups  that is the  individual, the family and the community are achieved. Through the Green  Paper on Families, we also seek to achieve the following:

  • Reaffirm relevance of a family as a critical unit in society.
  • To maximise the participation and commitment of all sectors in strengthening family life.
  • To ensure balance between work and family life.
  • To ensure that families have access to services.
  • Strengthening families so that they can be able to take care of children.

It is against this background that the Provincial Family Services Forum was launched on the 6 March 2013.The overall functions of the forum is as follows:

  • Promote networking ,joint program planning, implementation and monitor activities
  • Ensure mainstreaming of family issues
  • Advocate for families through the dissemination of information and education
  • Support , monitor and evaluate  the implementation of the White Paper
  • Facilitate the establishment of structures at district level
  • Guide and direct process of ensuring that services reach the designated families.

The strengthening of families and communities to foster social cohesion in the Province will only be realized through the functional and successful intersectoral coordinating structure. Ladies and Gentleman One of the major challenges facing families is the problem of domestic violence , especially gender based violence. We need to address the violence within our families and be good role models for our children. Violence against women, many of whom are mothers, remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in our country. It has far-reaching consequences – endangering the lives of women and children and harming families and communities. Preventing family violence should be a key priority for all of us. One of the problems confronting families today is substance abuse. The increase and the abuse of methamphetamine tik (known as nyaope in townships) destroy the moral fibre of our society. Drug abuse is a major contributor to family and social disintegration. It is incumbent on government, with the collaboration of civil society, to do its utmost to shield families from this scourge. In this regard we will continue working closely with civil society and communities to implement the Northern Cape Anti Substance Abuse Strategy that was launched in June 2012 and encourage community members to participate in substance abuse forums. It is our priority to work together with you to prevent drug abuse and the harm that drugs cause to families and society in general.

So, today as we celebrate the International Day for Families we have to ask ourselves: what have we done to support families confronted by all these challenges? Government, in its review of the past nineteen years has addressed these questions and we are proud of what we have achieved by working in partnerships with civil society organisations, organised labour, the business sector, traditional leaders, and international agencies.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is timely that we celebrate the International Day for Families at a time when we will be observing the Child Protection Week in the last week of May . The Department of Social Development introduced Child Protection Week to raise awareness about the need for child protection as well as to mobilise all sectors of society to respond to social ills facing children. Since 1997 Child Protection Week has become an annual campaign of government to educate and mobilise communities to put children first.. Child abuse is one of the most serious social problems, if not the most serious one, in South Africa today, and the government is open to and supportive of any initiatives that will prevent harm to children.

Let me remind you that child abuse not only affects the individual child, it affects the whole community. Along with the physical and emotional costs to individual children, the social and economic costs to our community associated with child abuse and neglect, whilst not always immediately obvious, are enormous.

Many of you would be aware that the Department of Social Development has established the national Child Protection Register, which is used to record information about the abuse, neglect or exploitation of children. The information is used for planning and resources allocation purposes to prevent the abuse and deliberate neglect of children and protect children on provincial and municipal levels. I am appealing to all parents, teachers, social workers and everyone who has the interest of children at heart to make use of the register to report incidents of abuse.

Ladies and Gentlemen

With reference to the Balelapa Household Profiling report (2010), families in Namaqua are confronted with a number of challenges which impact negatively on their functionality. The challenges were identified as follows: substance abuse, child/youth headed households, HIV/Aids, poverty, high  unemployment rate due to lack of business opportunities, some children between 7-15yrs  do not attend school, limited access to health facilities and lack of skills due to poor educational background. Families also experience financial constraints as most of them solely depend on social grants to provide for their basic needs. Issues of crime and violence within families cannot also not be ignored as they are exacerbated by the socioeconomic status of families. All these identified social ills have profoundly affected the well being of family members and consequently placed an added burden on children. Some parents spend most of their time at work and thus cannot exercise their parental obligation. Discipline within families is also a challenge especially for parents who work long hours. The main focus of the Department of Social Development is to promote social cohesion amongst individuals, families and communities through the implementation of coordinated and integrated family preservation services by all stakeholders to address and eradicate these social ills from our communities , therefore building a caring society together and ensuring a better life for all.

We want to use this important occasion to re-emphasise the need for families and communities to support and protect people with disabilities. People with disabilities are members of families who are mostly neglected in terms of care and understanding. These family members sometimes are ostracised by their siblings such that they end up living in absolute poverty due to lack of socio-economic support.

Communities must promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. People with disabilities form part of families and communities and they have a right to be heard, to be understood and to evolve like everyone else. The marginalisation of people with disabilities limits their potential to contribute to society.

In conclusion, we call on all sectors of society to work with us in a quest to build strong families. These efforts must start with programmes to strengthen families by protecting vulnerable members of society such as children, women, people with disabilities and older persons.

Working together, we can do more to create a caring society. I thank you , dankie

5-Minute Speech about Family 350 to 400 words

Today, I have the privilege of sharing with you a more in-depth perspective on the topic that is closest to my heart—my family.

When we talk about family, we often think of our immediate relatives, those we live with and share our daily lives. But family extends far beyond that. It encompasses our parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even close friends who become a part of our lives.

Family is not just about blood relations; it’s about the bond we share. It’s about the love, support, and care we offer and receive in return. In my family, this bond is unbreakable.

My parents are the foundation of our family. They have taught me values, morals, and the importance of hard work . They have sacrificed so much to provide us with a comfortable life and the best possible education. Their love is unwavering, and I can always count on their guidance.

My siblings are my confidants and partners in crime. We share our dreams, our fears, and our secrets. They are my constant companions, and together we have created a treasure trove of memories.

Grandparents bring with them a wealth of wisdom and experience. They connect us to our roots and traditions. Their stories and advice are like gems that we cherish. In my family, we celebrate both our triumphs and our failures. We know that it’s okay to make mistakes because that’s how we learn and grow. We support each other’s aspirations and encourage one another to pursue our passions.

Family time is sacred. Whether it’s gathering around the dinner table, going on vacations, or simply spending a lazy Sunday together, these moments are the threads that weave our family tapestry. They create lasting memories and strengthen our bonds.

The love and support of family have been my greatest assets. They have taught me to be compassionate, empathetic, and resilient. They have shown me that family is not just a word; it’s an emotion, a sanctuary, and a lifelong commitment.

In conclusion, I am incredibly fortunate to have the family that I do. They are my foundation, my source of strength, and my greatest treasure. Through thick and thin, we stand together, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Speech About My Family

Speech About My Family (500+ Words)

Respected Principal, teachers, and dear friends,

Today I am going to speak about my family.

Family is where we learn our first life lessons, and they are the only assets that remain with us forever. I have a strong attachment to my highly educated and kind-hearted family, and their wonderful nature brings us closer. My love for my family surpasses anything else.

In our nuclear family of five, my father, a teacher, takes the lead and guides our family. He is the driving force behind our family’s success, predicting our needs and shouldering all responsibilities to shape our lives. He is my hero, making incredible sacrifices and ensuring our well-being.

What sets my father apart is that he never imposes his career choices on me. He values my independence and believes in allowing me to pursue my own path based on my interests, suitability, and capabilities. However, he desires a better future for me, and his support and guidance are invaluable.

My mother, a lovely woman, is both a dedicated homemaker and a talented beautician. She understands me like no one else, and we work together as partners in everyday tasks and challenges. Her elegant and insightful actions shape me into a noble individual. She encourages me to engage in activities that build character and promote personal growth, fostering a natural learning environment.

The love and respect I have for my mother goes beyond words, as she exemplifies unmatched motherhood and makes incredible sacrifices for me.

My grandmother, the cutest person in our family, brings a sense of discipline. Her presence ensures that everyone rises early in the morning. She delights us with her skill in making delicious sweet dishes, and we adore her for it. Her focused nature keeps everything in order and adds balance to our lives.

My elder brother, the tallest among us, is a passionate YouTuber and cooking enthusiast. He also loves playing cricket and is a gadget aficionado. Although he may not focus much on academics, his sweetness, and gentlemanly demeanor make him endearing.

Despite being in my final year of studies, my family continues to treat me with the affectionate nickname “chottu.” This endearing gesture reflects the immense love and care they have for me. I aspire to become a pillar of support for my family and repay the love and care they have shown me.

For me, my family is the epitome of love and support. Regardless of the circumstances, we are always there for each other, nurturing good values and morals. Respect for elders and love for younger ones are instilled in us from a young age.

My grandmother consistently teaches me important lessons in honesty, dependability, kindness, and more. I treasure my family as they are the precious jewels of my life. Their unwavering hard work to fulfill our desires strengthens my love and respect for my parents. We bond by playing games every night and engaging in meaningful discussions, cherishing quality time spent together. My family holds the highest place in my heart, surpassing anyone else.

With this, I conclude my speech. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.

National Siblings Day is a celebration born of love — and grief

Maria Godoy

The Science of Siblings is a new series exploring the ways our siblings can influence us, from our money and our mental health all the way down to our very molecules. We'll be sharing these stories over the next several weeks.

While not an official holiday, National Siblings Day on April 10 has gained momentum on social media in recent years.

Every April 10 for several years now, many social media feeds are transformed into a virtual family album of sorts, as friends and acquaintances post photos to mark National Siblings Day.

But unlike many of the unofficial holidays that clutter the calendar year — from Talk Like a Pirate Day to National French Fry Day — National Siblings Day is neither frivolous nor commercially motivated. Instead, it is a holiday born of profound love — and loss.

The Science of Siblings

Special Series

The science of siblings.

As NPR's Science Desk explores the science of siblings , we decided to reach out to Claudia Evart, the woman who conceived the holiday. She grew up with an older brother and sister. They were her first best friends, her support and her mentors, she says.

The origin story of National Siblings Day

Tragically, both of Evart's siblings died at young ages in separate accidents. Her sister, Lisette, was just 19 when she was killed in a car accident, alongside their father. Evart was 17. Fourteen years later, Evart's brother, Alan, died after hitting his head in a fall.

"You always think they'll be there," she says. "And I took them for granted, and I didn't realize how much they meant to me. Until you lose them, [then] you realize what you lost. "

In 1995, a decade after Alan's death, Evart says she was celebrating her own birthday in late March when she was struck by an overpowering sense of sadness and loneliness. "I came to the realization that I would never again celebrate my birthday with my beloved siblings . "

The Science of Siblings Series

At the heart of this cozy coffee shop lies a big sister's love for her little brother.

"It's the most powerful relationship you ever have in your life," she says, adding, "It's a very hard thing to lose your siblings. The void is just so intense."

Evart says she created National Siblings Day both to honor her own siblings' memories and to encourage widespread recognition of the unique bond between siblings. It's on April 10 every year because that is Lisette's birthday. "We have Mother's and Father's Day. Why not have your siblings recognized?"

While National Siblings Day isn't a federal holiday, former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all issued letters recognizing the day, according to the Siblings Day Foundation , which Evart founded.

Evart says she'd like to see people mark the day by taking the time to cherish their siblings. "Whether you're reliving childhood memories, planning an outing or simply spending quality time together, let's make this day special. Reach out to your siblings, near and far, and let them know how much they mean to you."

As for those photos and heartfelt messages that will likely flood social media again this year? "It's the greatest thing," she says.

In that spirit, I will close with a shamelessly earnest message of my own: Monica, Olga, Elena, thank you for being the best sisters I could ever ask for.

It's National Siblings Day! Video shows funny, heartwarming moments between siblings

speech for family day

From a big brother meeting his new baby brother for the first time to an unexpected reunion, siblings can help make life a little sweeter.

USA TODAY complied clips of some of the funniest, most heartwarming and tear-jerking moments between siblings of all ages in honor of National Siblings Day on Wednesday, April 10.

First is a big brother meeting his baby brother for the first time and tearfully and excitedly declaring him to be his "best friend forever."

There's also an unexpected reunion between actor John Yi and his siblings as his Broadway show "KPOP" was coming to a close, the first time in five years all the siblings had been together.

There's also video of a man who had not seen his sister for 24 years was shocked when she appeared in a photo behind him, in a surprise visit arranged by his family.

In another clip, a man who moved to the U.S. from Ivory Coast to pursue tennis was reunited with his sister at the airport for the first time in four years.

What is National Siblings Day?

Also referred to as Sibling Day, the annual observance falls on April 10 and is meant to honor one's siblings.

It was founded in 1995 by Claudia Evart as a way to honor and celebrate siblings. According to the National Day Calendar , Evart had lost two siblings early in life in separate accidents. Evart created the Siblings Day Foundation and chose April 10 as the day of observance in honor of her sister, Lisette's birthday.

If you're an only child, fret not: Only Child Day is April 12, just a few days after National Siblings Day. There are also separate Brothers Day and Sisters Day in May and August, respectively.

At Berkeley, a Protest at a Dean’s Home Tests the Limits of Free Speech

Pro-Palestinian supporters disrupted a dinner for law students. There was a tussle over the microphone and conflicting claims of harm.

By Vimal Patel

The dean of Berkeley’s law school is known as a staunch supporter of free speech, but things became personal for him when pro-Palestinian students disrupted a celebratory dinner party for some 60 students at his home.

Erwin Chemerinsky, the law school dean, hosted the dinner on Tuesday night in the backyard of his Oakland, Calif., home. The party was supposed to be a community building event, open to all third-year law students, with no speeches or formal activities.

But a third-year law student and a Palestinian activist, Malak Afaneh, stood up at the event, holding a microphone, and launched into a speech.

As she began to talk, Mr. Chemerinsky, a noted Constitutional scholar, can be seen shouting, “Please leave our house! You are guests in our house!”

Catherine Fisk, another Berkeley law professor and Mr. Chemerinsky’s wife, can be seen with her arm around Ms. Afaneh, trying to yank the microphone away and pulling the student up a couple steps.

Ms. Afaneh and other student protesters described Ms. Fisk’s struggle for the microphone as a disproportionate and violent response. Students, they said, had a right to speak at a university gathering.

Mr. Chemerinsky said the dinner was paid for by the university. But he said that the students, who brought their own microphone and amp, had no such free speech rights in a private home, at a dinner with no planned remarks.

In the past, Mr. Chemerinsky has supported speech rights for pro-Palestinian students, including the right to block Zionists from speaking to their groups. But this latest incident shows how the Israel-Hamas war has intensified and complicated the free speech debate. As pro-Palestinian students stage sit-ins and disrupt events at campuses across the country, some administrators, pressed by donors and politicians, have cracked down on unruly behavior, arresting and suspending students.

The moment has been especially fraught for the University of California, Berkeley, long a hotbed of leftist activism and the home of the ’60s Free Speech movement. As protests there continue over the Middle East conflict, some Jewish students and alumni have criticized university officials, saying that the school has tolerated activism that veers into antisemitic speech.

On Thursday night, about 15 protesters returned to Mr. Chemerinsky’s home for another student dinner, this time staying outside the house for about 90 minutes, Mr. Chemerinsky said.

“They were carrying signs and had drums,” he wrote in an email message. “They stood in front of our house chanting (some quite offensive) and banging their drums.”

In February, an event at Berkeley featuring an Israeli speaker was canceled after a crowd of protesters broke down doors, which the chancellor, Carol Christ, said was “an attack on the fundamental values of the university.” Last month, Representative Virginia Foxx, chair of the House committee on education that has been investigating antisemitism on campus, sent a letter to university officials demanding documents and information about Berkeley’s response to antisemitism.

Mr. Chemerinsky said that he himself was the subject of an antisemitic flier, circulated earlier in the week, which depicted a cartoon image of him gripping a bloody knife and fork, with the words “No Dinner With Zionist Chem While Gaza Starves.”

“I never thought I would see such blatant antisemitism,” he wrote in a statement to the law school community after the first protest, “with an image that invokes the horrible antisemitic trope of blood libel and that attacks me for no apparent reason other than I am Jewish.”

The Berkeley chapter of Law Students for Justice in Palestine, where Ms. Afaneh is co-president, did not respond to requests for an interview. But Camilo Pérez-Bustillo, the executive director of the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, said that Mr. Chemerinsky was not singled out because he is Jewish.

“He was being targeted because he’s failed to take a public position on a matter of urgency,” Mr. Pérez-Bustillo said, “which is U.S. complicity with the unfolding genocide.”

In the video, Ms. Afaneh said, the National Lawyers Guild “has informed us this is our First Amendment right.”

The Chemerinsky dinner on Tuesday fell on the last day of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month. As Ms. Afaneh and Professor Fisk both gripped the microphone, Ms. Afaneh said, “We refuse to break our fast on the blood of Palestinian people” and accused the university system of sending billions of dollars to weapons manufacturers.

“I have nothing to do with what the U.C. does,” Ms. Fisk said. “This is my home.”

Ms. Fisk threatened to call the police but did not. After she let go of the microphone, Ms. Afaneh and about 10 other law students left peacefully and the dinner continued, Mr. Chemerinsky said.

“I am enormously sad that we have students who are so rude as to come into my home, in my backyard, and use this social occasion for their political agenda,” Mr. Chemerinsky wrote. Through Mr. Chemerinsky, Ms. Fisk declined to be interviewed.

Many pro-Palestinian supporters argue this is not the moment for decorum, as the death toll of Israel’s bombing in Gaza tops 30,000, according to Gaza health officials. The protesting students wanted Mr. Chemerinsky, who describes himself as a Zionist, to denounce what they described as an unfolding genocide and to call for the university to divest from companies that aid Israel’s military campaign.

After the dinner altercation, the Law Students for Justice in Palestine chapter demanded the resignations of Mr. Chemerinsky and Ms. Fisk, and called for a Palestine studies program that centers on the “resistance and the right to return in a settler-colonial context.”

Richard Leib, the board chairman of the University of California system, and Ms. Christ, the Berkeley chancellor, have supported the couple.

“I am appalled and deeply disturbed by what occurred at Dean Chemerinsky’s home last night,” Ms. Christ said in a statement on Wednesday. “While our support for Free Speech is unwavering, we cannot condone using a social occasion at a person’s private residence as a platform for protest.”

Mr. Chemerinsky said he invites first-year law students to a welcome dinner in his backyard to create a sense of community. This dinner — spread over three nights with about 60 students each — was for third-year students whose traditional welcome dinner was canceled because of Covid, Mr. Chemerinsky said.

The dean said he was such a believer in the tradition that when he bought a home in 2017, he made sure the backyard could fit a crowd.

“I never could have imagined this would be divisive or a flashpoint,” he said, adding, “It’s an ugly moment.”

Remarks by President   Biden on the Care Economy | Washington,   D.C.

Union Station Washington, D.C.

1:01 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Hello, hello, hello.  (Applause.)  As my mother would say, “God love you all.”

Crystal, thank you for sharing your story.  It’s a — and a simple truth.

Folks, you know, there’s no better place for me to — last year at this day, I declared Caregiver and Caretaker — Caregivers Month.  And — and it’s — and I couldn’t think of no better place to celebrate it today than here at this station.  (Applause.)

No, no, I’ll tell you why.  For 36 years, I commuted from the state of Delaware to here every single day the Senate was in session.  And over a millio- — a lo- — a lot of times.  The reason I did is — I think I understand a little bit what many of you have gone through and what you’re trying to help with.

You know, when I got elected, I was 26 — 29 years old.  I wasn’t old enough to be sworn in.  While I was down here hiring staff, before I was sworn in, I got a call saying my wife and daughter were dead and my two boys were badly injured.  And so, you know, I — I wasn’t going to come down, but I had a — thank God, I had a family and a lot of friends and older men- — members like me, 45, 50 — (laughter) — who helped me out.

But all — but all kidding aside, I didn’t have them — I was just — I just had started a law practice.  I didn’t have any money.  I mean, I made a living, but I didn’t have any money.  And what I tried to do is figure out how I was going to raise my boys.

AUDIENCE MEMBERS:  Wooo!

THE PRESIDENT:  No, I’m serious.

And I tell you what, I really wondered: Why did I commute every single day?  Over a million miles roundtrip over the time I was in the United States Senate.

And the reason I did: I couldn’t afford a house down here without selling my house at home, and I couldn’t afford caregiving.  It was the God’s truth.  No possibility.  None whatsoever.

But I — lucky I had a family.  My mother, my father, my sister, my brother all moved in, helped me take care of my kids.  But then we ended up with Mom getting sick and Dad getting sick, and they — we took care of them — the so-called sandwich generation.

Look, you care workers represent the best of who we are as Americans.  (Applause.)  No, you really do.  We look out for one another in America.  We leave nobody behind — nobody behind.

And you said — all the heroes in the lives you was — talk about.  Well, you’re our hero.  You’re the heroes to so many individuals.  You really are.  And you represent so many people who do it — and do it out of love and concern, not because of the pay, because they’re not getting the pay they need.  It matters.  (Laughter.)

As your President, I’m here with a simple message.  I give you my word: I have your back.  I have your back.  (Applause.)

I also to thank the family of Ady Barkan, whose widow Rachael and her son here — Carl — are here, just backstage.  I just met with them.  Their family embodies why care matters.  It’s critical to the dignity of care, the dignity of all — all caregivers and workers.

My dad used to say, “A job — Joey” — I give you my word as a (inaudible).  “A job is about a lot more than a paycheck.  It’s about your dignity.  It’s about respect.”  (Applause.)  No, it really is.  “It’s about being able to look your kid in the eye and say, ‘Honey, it’s going to be okay.’”

Care workers and caregivers are critical to our families and to the entire economy.  That’s why as a candidate, as president I was determined to turn things around.  We’ve made progress, but there’s so more that we have to do — so much more.

If we want the best economy in the world, we have to have the best caregiving economy in the world.  (Applause.)  We really do.  They are not inconsistent.  They are consistent.

But the cost of care is too high and pay for care workers is much too low.  (Applause.)

Take childcare.  A typical family spends $11,000 a year on childcare per child — per child.  If you live in a big city, that can be $17,000 for each child — more than their college tuition if, God willing, you’re able to get there.  And a lot of parents do the math and realize they can’t afford to go to work, because childcare can sometimes literally cost more than they earn — more than they earn.

You know, take homecare.  The cost of long-term care for aging loved ones and people with disabilities rose 40 percent in the last decade.

Medicaid offers help, but it can’t meet the demand.  You know, there are 700,000 seniors waiting in line — 700,000 waiting in line, and people with disabilities are stuck on Medicaid homecare waiting lists for as long as 10 years if they survive to be qualifi- — it’s amazing.  Think about it.

Family members like ours and yours often spend their own retirement savings to pay for the care of the loved ones.  Others leave their jobs to care for them.  And millions are part of the so-called sandwich generation, taking care of both your kids and your aging parents at the same time — at least that’s been the experience of the Biden family.  It’s overwhelming.

Take paid leave.  We’re the only ad- — (applause) — we’re — we’re the — we’re the only advanced economy in the world not to guarantee paid leave.  We’re going to change that.  (Applause.)  That means to help a loved one, many folks have to leave work to [or] find out later that they’ve been fired.

In the United States of America, no one — no one should choose between caring for a parent who’s raised them, a child who depends on them, or a paycheck that they need.  (Applause.)  That’s not why it should be — the way it should be.  No, I’m serious.  You wonder whether I feel strongly about this, I do.

Look, more often than not, from childcare to eldercare to the lack of paid leave, it’s women who bear the brunt — (applause) — women who bear the brunt.

We saw that during the pandemic when 2 million women left their jobs to help take care of their families.  It hurts our whole economy to lose so much talent in the workplace.  And it keeps women from earning the equal pay they deserve because they say, “Well, you haven’t been here.”

Look, a fact: Care workers are predominately women as well — women of color and immigrants who are overworked, overlooked, and underpaid.  (Applause.)  It’s not enough just to praise them for all they’re doing; we have to pay them.  (Applause.)

To invest in our care economy, as soon as I came into office, I signed the American Rescue Plan.  Not a single Republican voted for it, I might add — not one.

It made our nation’s biggest investment in childcare ever.  (Applause.)  For example, it kept 225,000 childcare workers — cen- — well, childcare working centers open, giving parents an opportunity —

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  (Inaudible.)

THE PRESIDENT:  — to get back to work.

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, I tell you what — you want to come make a speech or shush up?  Okay?  (Laughter.)  I’m not messing around with him.  He — he lo- — he looks like he could take me.  AFSCME!  (Applause.)

Look, it expanded the Childcare Tax Credit, cutting child poverty in America in half.  That’s what it did.  We cut it in half.  (Applause.)

Overall, my administration increased funding for nearly 50 percent for — of — by 50 percent for childcare.  And in the coming weeks, we plan to release new rules to strengthen staffing standards in nursing homes, to get homecare workers a bigger share of Medicaid payments.  (Applause.)

But I want to — but that’s not going to be enough.  I want to do more, and we can do more.

My budget for next year makes key commitments to children, seniors, and people with disabilities, and to caregivers who look after their loved ones.  (Applause.)

First, for working families with small children, we’re going to guarantee affordable, quality childcare.  (Applause.)  Most families — under our plan, most families will pay less than $10 a day per child, saving millions of folks as much as $7,000 a year.  That’s a lot of breathing room for a — young families who need it badly.  (Applause.)

We’ll also restore the expanded Childcare Tax Credit — (applause) — lifting millions of children out of poverty.  And, by the way, this helps the economy.  It doesn’t hurt the — it helps the economy.  (Applause.)

You know, our Republican friends let that expire.  Well, we got to expire a couple of them, politically — (laughter and applause) — in order to get this passed.

Together, we’re going to bring it back.  (Applause.)

Second, seniors and people with disabilities, we’re going to expand Medicaid homecare services and reduce that 700,000-person backlog.  (Applause.)  That’ll mean more folks can live and work in their own communities with dignity and independence.  More homecare workers will start getting a better pay and benefits and dignity they deserve.  (Applause.)

By the way, if anybody is listening besides all of us, we agree on this: This is really — I’m — we’re deadly earnest.  This is not — it’s not a joke.  This matters.  (Applause.)

Third, for everyone caring for a loved one, my budget would finally, finally create a national paid family and medical leave program — finally — (applause) — up to 12 weeks to care for a newborn, a sick on- — a sick loved one, or yourself without losing your income.  (Applause.)

Look, it’s past time America caught up with the rest of the world on paid leave.  (Applause.)

And, folks, all this helps families, and it grows the economy.  It grows the economy.  And we can afford to do it.  To put another way, we can’t afford not to do it.

Look, I’m a capitalist.  But I want to make sure that — you know, if you make a million bucks, great.  Just start paying your fair share in taxes.  (Applause.)

But let me ask you: Does anyone here think the tax code is fair?  Raise your hand.

AUDIENCE:  No!

THE PRESIDENT:  I don’t either.  (Laughter.)

The last administration enacted a $2 trillion tax cut —

AUDIENCE:  Booo —

THE PRESIDENT:  — overwhelmingly benefiting the very wealthy and the biggest corporations and exploded the federal deficit more than any other president has.  We’ve cut the deficit, by the way.  (Applause.)

It added more to the national debt than any presidential term in history.  And it’s due to expire next year.  And guess what?  I hope to be president because it expires, it’s going to stay expired — (applause) — stay expired.

Our administration — our administration has already cut the deficit by $1 trillion.  And I’m going to cut it even more this decade by making big corporations and the very wealthy begin to pay their fair share.  (Applause.)

Under my plan, nobody earning less than $400,000 a year will pay an extra penny in taxes.  I don’t — I hope that (inaudible).  (Applause.)

As I’ve made it clear: We’re not trying to beat people — there a- — but there are a thousand billionaires in America — from 750 to 1,000 since the pandemic.  You know what the average tax rate those billionaires pay?  8.2 percent.

THE PRESIDENT:  No, I’m serious.  Anybody want to trade that tax rate?

AUDIENCE:  Yes!

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, look, that’s far less than the vast majority of Americans pay.  No billionaire should pay a lower tax rate than a teacher, a firefighter, or a care worker.  (Applause.)

And that’s why I proposed a minimum tax for billionaires of 25 percent.  It’s not even the highest rate — just 25 percent.  And guess what?  It’s more fair.  But it also — guess what it would do over 10 years?  It would raise $500 billion — (applause) — $500 billion.  And it wouldn’t hurt anybody.

I’m a capitalist.  If you make a billion bucks, wonderful.  Pay your fair share.  (Applause.)

Imagine what we can do — imagine what we can do for America.  Look, folks, imagine a future with affordable childcare, homecare, eldercare, paid leave.

But, folks, our Republican friends have a different vision.  Republicans in the House of Representatives — and, by the way, Rosa DeLauro — she was here, I was told — she’s a hell of a champion for all this.  (Applause.)

They just released their budget — the Republicans — that cuts caregiving programs by a third — the ones that exist, cuts them by a third.  For example, it would mean 260,000 fewer kids in childcare.

My predecessor and his MAGA friends want to — I love the phrase — the — the language they use — they want to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act.

THE PRESIDENT:  “Terminate.”  Well, guess what?  Killing millions of Americans — taking them off of healthcare insurance and stripping others of services like homecare.

Folks — and, by the way, you know how many times they’ve tried to take out Obamacare and the Affordable Healthcare Act?  Forty-nine times they’ve tried.  They can keep trying, but they’re not going to get it done.  (Applause.)

And, look, when it comes to Social Security and Medicare, my predecessor recently said, quote, “There’s a lot you can do in terms of cutting.”  God love him.

Right on cue, House Republicans released their budget that would raise the retirement age in Social Security — the budget they submitted for next year — and slash Medicare, while they cut taxes for the very wealthy again.

I got a better idea.  I’ll protect Social Security and Medicare and make the very wealthy pay their fair share to make it work.  (Applause.)

Look, let me conclude where I started, by thanking all of you.  As Crystal said, you’re all — and I mean this sincerely — you’re all somebody’s hero.

That’s what I see in our nation’s caregivers: heroes.  We need you.  Not a joke.  We need you.  (Applause.)

And together, I know we can do this.  I’ve never been more optimistic about our future.  We just have to remember who we are.  We’re the United States of America.  There’s nothing beyond our capacity — nothing — (applause) — if we do it together.

So, let’s stay work- — get to work, keep working.  And God bless you all.  And may God bless our troops.  Thank you.  (Applause.)

Parents of Michigan school shooter sentenced

By Antoinette Radford and Maureen Chowdhury , CNN

Parents of school shooter sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison. Here's what happened in court today

From CNN staff

The  parents of the teenager who killed four students  in the 2021 school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, were each sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison Tuesday, weeks after being convicted of manslaughter.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, who each had faced up to 15 years in prison, have already been imprisoned for more than two years since their arrest in a Detroit warehouse days after the shooting. Though they were tried separately, their sentencing took place together in an Oakland County courtroom.

They are the first parents to be held criminally responsible for a mass school shooting committed by their child as the nation continues to grapple with the scourge of gunfire on campus and mass shootings.

Here's what everyone said in court today:

  • Several family members of the four students killed in the shooting delivered emotional victim impact statements before the judge handed down the sentencing. The mother of Justin Shilling said "the ripple effects of both James and Jennifer's failures to act" to prevent their son from carrying out the deadly shooting " have devastated us all ." The father of Hana St. Juliana said the Crumbleys continue to deflect blame , adding his daughter's death "destroyed a large portion of my very soul."
  • Jennifer Crumbley began her statement to the court on Tuesday by expressing her condolences to the victims and their families. She also said a previous statement that she made on the stand in her own defense  during her trial in Februar y was "completely misunderstood." Jennifer Crumbley previously said, “I’ve asked myself if I would have done anything differently, and I wouldn’t have.” Now, before sentencing, she said if she knew her son was capable of the crimes committed, her answer would have "absolutely been different."
  • James Crumbley apologized to the victims , something he said he had not been able to do yet. He said he was not aware his son was planning a school shooting, and he asked the judge, "sentence me in a fair way."
  • Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald urged the judge to exceed the sentencing guidelines for the Crumbleys and to consider the "devastating impact of their gross negligence that was foreseeable." In separate pre-sentencing memos, the attorneys for the parents asked for them  to be sentenced  to less than five years in prison.
  • Judge Cheryl Matthews said the decision should be a deterrent to try to stop school shootings in the future. She pointed to James and Jennifer Crumbley's lack of action, saying, “These convictions confirm repeated acts or lack of acts that could have halted an oncoming runaway train."

Crumbley case sets a precedent on who can be held accountable for a mass shooting

From CNN's Celina Tebor

The historic trials, and stunning verdicts, of James and Jennifer Crumbley  tested the limits of who can be held responsible for a mass shooting.

The prosecution of both parents, and an uptick in other criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits tied to mass shootings, indicates attorneys are increasingly seeking to hold responsible people — and companies — who didn’t pull the trigger .

Prosecutors over the past few years have been slowly, but steadily, expanding the notion of who can be held accountable for a mass shooting, CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig, a former federal and state prosecutor, said last month.

While he cautioned each case rests on its own merits, "we’ve seen groundbreaking prosecutions of parents and security personnel," he said, "and I’d expect that trend to continue."

The question remains whether prosecution of non-shooters will be effective in reducing the number of mass shootings in the United States. But undoubtedly, it has expanded prosecutors’ tool boxes, according to Ekow Yankah, law professor at the University of Michigan.

“It gives different prosecutors something to aim at – it gives them a new theory, it gives them something to try,” he told CNN. “It gives prosecutors who are frustrated, are facing a devastating crime, a mass shooting that’s hurt their community, some set of actions that they can take.”

Prosecutor says she is disappointed James and Jennifer Crumbley did not express remorse

From CNN’s Nicki Brown

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald speaks in court on Tuesday.

The lead prosecutor in James and Jennifer Crumbley's criminal trials said it was "disappointing" that the parents didn't express remorse.

"Feeling bad is natural, and we don't dispute that they feel bad ... that's not what's important to victims of crime," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said to reporters after the Crumbleys' sentencing Tuesday. "What they want and need most of all is remorse, which means acknowledgment of the wrongdoing and some sort of reconciliation or apology for that — and that didn't come."

The prosecutor said she didn't think that the case would set a precedent for parents of other school shooters.

"There's a difference between precedent-setting and rare, and this is really a rare set of facts, it really is," McDonald said.

"Most of us know that you have to exercise reasonable care at least to prevent other people from the dangers that you know are foreseeable," she added.

She said her team did the "absolute best" they could, and the victim's families know that.

"It's really hard ... to remark about how hard we work and how hard it's been when you're looking in the eyes of these parents every day, who get up in unbelievable pain and grief and see this play out every day and they still go on," she said. "And so, my focus is there."

James and Jennifer Crumbley each sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the teenager who killed four students in a 2021 school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, were each sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison, respectively, weeks after they were convicted of manslaughter.

They will receive credit for 858 days already served.

Sentence for Crumbleys should be a deterrent, judge says

From CNN's Elise Hammond

Judge Cheryl Matthews speaks in court during the Crumbleys sentencing hearing on Tuesday.

The judge presiding over the sentencing of James and Jennifer Crumbley said the decision should be a deterrent to try to stop school shootings in the future.

"Opportunity knocked over and over again, louder and louder, and was ignored," Judge Cheryl Matthews said. "No one answered and these two people should have and sure didn’t."

She said she is "aware of my job in this situation” and promised not to be “swayed by public opinion” when handing down the sentencing decision.

Talking to the families in the courtroom, Matthews said she could never understand the pain they are experiencing, but reassured them, “I saw what you saw and I heard what you heard” during the trials.

Prosecutor urges judge to consider the "devastating impact" of the Crumbleys' "gross negligence"

From CNN's Nicki Brown

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald urged Judge Cheryl Matthews to exceed the sentencing guidelines for James and Jennifer Crumbley, asking the judge to consider the "devastating impact of their gross negligence that was foreseeable."

"I want to be clear, remorse does not sound like, 'I feel really bad.' I'm sure they do. I don't dispute they feel bad, I don't dispute they have grief. That's not the kind of remorse and accountability these victims are looking for," McDonald said in court Tuesday.

She continued, addressing the judge:

"When fashioning a sentence, it is absolutely critical that you listen and consider the impact of what that gross negligence caused. So we're asking you to exceed the guidelines because I believe all of the factors pursuant to the case law, with the necessary consideration of the impact of these crimes, justifies you to do. We're asking you, the people are asking you, to consider the devastating impact of their gross negligence that was foreseeable."

James Crumbley apologizes to the families of his son's victims

From CNN's Antoinette Radford

James Crumbley addresses the court on Tuesday.

James Crumbley, the father of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley, addressed the courtroom, opening his statement by apologizing to the victims, something he said he had not been able to do yet.

"I want to say I can't imagine the pain and agony ... for the families that have lost their children and what they are experiencing and what they are going through. As a parent, our biggest fear is losing our child or our children, and to lose a child is unimaginable. My heart is really broken for everybody involved," he said.

"I really want the families of Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St Juliana, Tate Myre and Justin Shilling to know how truly sorry I am, and how devastated I was when I heard what happened to them," Crumbley said.

Crumbley added that he was not aware his son was planning a school shooting, and he asked Judge Cheryl Matthews to "sentence me in a fair way."

Jennifer Crumbley says previous statement made in court was misinterpreted

From CNN's Maureen Chowdhury

Jennifer Crumbley delivers a statement to the court on Tuesday.

Jennifer Crumbley began her statement to the court by expressing her condolences to the victims and their families.

"I sit here today to express my deepest sorrows for the families of Hana, Tate, Madisyn, Justin and to all those affected on November 30, 2021," she said.

Crumbley said that a previous statement made on the stand was "completely misunderstood."

When she took the stand in her own defense during her trial in Februar y, she had said, “I’ve asked myself if I would have done anything differently, and I wouldn’t have.”

On Tuesday, Crumbley said that she did not foresee the actions of her son and therefore would not have done anything different, and that is how she interpreted the question.

"With the benefit of hindsight and information I have now, my answer would be drastically different," she said.

Crumbley added that if she knew her son was capable of the crimes committed, her answer would have "absolutely been different."

Father of Hana St. Juliana says Crumbleys "choose to blame everyone but themselves"

Steve St. Juliana, the father of Hana St. Juliana, speaks during a victim impact statement in court on Tuesday.

James and Jennifer Crumbley continue to deflect blame, the father of a victim of the 2021 Oxford High School shooting said at the Crumbleys' sentencing Tuesday.

"The defendants, through their choices, through their indifference and gross negligence, enabled their son to murder my daughter Hana and three other children," Steve St. Juliana, the father of Hana St. Juliana, said in a victim impact statement Tuesday.

"They chose to stay quiet. They chose to ignore the warning signs. And now, as we've heard through all of the objections, they continue to choose to blame everyone but themselves," he said.

Steve St. Juliana said his daughter's death "destroyed a large portion of my very soul."

"I will never think back fondly on her high school and college graduations. I will never walk her down the aisle as she begins the journey of starting her own family. I am forever denied the chance to hold her or her future children in my arms," he added.

St. Juliana said his position on the Crumbleys' sentencing evolved throughout the trial as the defendants' "defiance" increased. "Hana, Madisyn, Tate, and Justin are the ones who have lost everything — not the defendants," he said before requesting the parents receive the maximum possible sentence.

Buck Myre, the father of victim Tate Myre, gave his impact statement following Steve St. Juliana. He was the last person to give an impact statement.

After 43 years on the mic, Celtics’ announcer Mike Gorman honored in his final regular season game

Mike Gorman Day included a myriad of tributes, speeches, and reflections.

  • Author: Noa Dalzell

In this story:

On Sunday afternoon, the Boston Celtics honored Mike Gorman in his last-ever regular season game – an event loaded with reflection and nostalgia -- in honor of the retirement of one of the most prolific broadcasters in basketball history.

The celebration, deemed Mike Gorman Day, included multiple video tributes, remarks from Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca, and a halftime conversation between Gorman and Brian Scalabrine at center court.

The final game of the season marked the conclusion of Gorman’s 43-year career calling Celtics games, the longest run by any announcer in Boston sports history. Though he will still be calling the first round of the playoffs, Sunday served as a ‘senior night’ of sorts, where fans each got Mike Gorman posters, watched video montages during several timeouts, and enjoyed the unveiling of a Mike Gorman Broadcast Table.

In one of the most poignant moments of the afternoon, Pagliuca instructed the TD Garden crowd to say “Got it!” in unison, in an ode to Gorman’s signature call.

The entire Garden joined together for a "GOT IT!" to honor Mike Gorman 💚 pic.twitter.com/nj67kRxs9t — Celtics on NBC Sports Boston (@NBCSCeltics) April 14, 2024

The celebration was recognized by the city at large; Boston Mayor Michele Wu proclaimed April 14, 2024, Mike Gorman Day, recognizing the Hall of Fame broadcaster’s “positive contributions, legacy, and service to Boston after 43 years of calling Boston Celtics games,” per a press release from her office.

“Mike Gorman has made an impact across generations of Celtics fans, families, and visitors throughout his 40-plus years as the voice of the Boston Celtics,” Wu said. “His passion, intellect, and ability to make every fan feel special and locked in for the whole game is unmatched.”

Prior to Sunday’s game, Joe Mazzulla reflected on the time he spent with the Celtics Voice on the team plane over the last few years.

“We would have certain conversations,” Mazzulla said. “Just listening to his insight, listening to his wisdom, his humility, his ability to connect with different people.

Even Wizards coach Brian Keefe, a Massachusetts native, made a point to pay his respects to the broadcaster ahead of his pregame presser.

“I just wanted to acknowledge him and what he’s meant to this community; because I’m part of that community,” Keefe said. “I listened to formative years of basketball in the 80s when I grew up here. It’s a great honor for him today. He’s a big historical figure in this city.”

Gorman’s halftime conversation with Scalabrine headlined the day’s events and touched on several topics, including his relationship with the late Tommy Heinson, his introduction to basketball, and his beginnings as a broadcaster.

"I will get misty-eyed if I try to talk about Tom. I think of him every day," Gorman said, drawing a roar from the TD Garden crowd while Heinson’s family sat in attendance.

Gorman closed his halftime conversation with a call to action for the current roster.

“To the team, I just want to say: Go win this thing, will you please? Just go win it.”

A lot of tears in this building as Mike Gorman closes his halftime farewell with the perfect final line. “To the team, I just want to say: go win this thing.” pic.twitter.com/hrZS15KVaV — Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzellNBA) April 14, 2024
