What Matters Most: Your Engineering Skills & Design Experience

Your resume skills and work experience

Being successful in your role is closely tied to your diverse skill set . From being a pro at various 3D modeling software to being a math whiz with a knack for creative thinking, you’ve got all the skills needed to transform a blueprint into a physical object.

It takes a lot to know how things work, and even more to know how to make them work better, or even to invent something new entirely. This is why filling out the “skills” part of your resume should be no problem, and you’ve got what it takes to make this section impressive.

While it’s important for you to translate complex innovations for a non-technical audience, your soft skills will have their chance to shine in the cover letter and the interview.

The secret recipe to successfully highlighting your engineering expertise is to focus on all your technical abilities. This includes staples, such as AutoCAD, but also things like an intimate knowledge of thermodynamics.

9 best mechanical design engineer skills

  • Rapid Prototyping
  • Thermodynamics
  • Autodesk Inventor
  • Fluid Mechanics

Sample mechanical design engineer work experience bullet points

In your role, each day brings a new challenge, from patenting innovative engines to meticulous design reviews. When you fill out your resume, it’s best to stray away from the day-to-day.

Saying that you “tested designs” or “worked on documentation” might be true, but it’s not the highlight of your career, which is what you want to focus on here.

Think of achievements that are closely tied to the skills you’ve listed, and add data to make them more tangible.

For example, say that you were able to increase the production rate by 17% by optimizing the design of mechanical components—the percentage is eye-catching and shows your true impact.

Here’s how you can do this in your resume:

  • Used SolidWorks to design and optimize a new HVAC system for a 10-story building, reducing energy costs by 21%
  • Delivered a complex conveyor system project 3 weeks ahead of schedule, saving 20% of the budget
  • Reduced design errors by 13% by spearheading a system of monthly design reviews, resulting in over $75,000 in annual savings
  • Introduced the use of finite element analysis via ANSYS, reducing prototype costs for heat transfer solutions by 19%

Top 5 Tips for Your Mechanical Design Engineer Resume

  • Make sure to mention all the tools you’re proficient in. Focus on AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Matlab, ANSYS, CATIA, Creo Parametric, and other industry-specific tools. Bonus points if these programs are listed in the job description !
  • Mechanical design engineering roles can vary wildly from one to the next, so make sure to tailor your resume to match the job. Swap skills and work experience bullet points in and out as needed. For example, if the company is in the automotive sector, mention your experience in building engine parts.
  • If you have the Professional Engineer (PE) certification, it’s worthy of inclusion, so pick a resume template that lets you easily add it.
  • With a host of technical skills to boot, you really don’t have space in your resume to list things like “creative” or “team player,” but slip them into your work experience. Mention instances of working with cross-functional teams of engineers or holding presentations for important clients.
  • Designing something from scratch is time-consuming, but so rewarding when your idea comes to life. Discuss your greatest designs in your resume and cover letter , be it a heat exchanger or a new pump, and elaborate on them during the interview.

Zone in on your engineering knowledge and try to look for transferable skills. For example, if you’re applying to a company in the aerospace sector, highlight your knowledge of safety standards and thermodynamics.

You can, but only if you update it for each company. Use it to quickly summarize your greatest accomplishments and describe how you’re hoping to grow in your new role.

Create a cover letter as an extension of your resume. For example, if you talked about developing a new gearbox design using CATIA, circle back to that in the cover letter and explain what you learned from the whole process.

Mechanical Design Engineer resume examples for 2024

A mechanical design engineer resume should highlight a candidate's proficiency in computer-aided design software, such as CREO and AutoCAD. It should also showcase their ability to generate manufacturing documentation and manage design reviews. According to Song Choi Ph.D., Assistant Dean at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, "GPA is not of primary importance, but it does show how quickly a student can/may pick up new ideas and concepts thoroughly." Mike DeVore Ph.D., Professor & Program Chair at Cincinnati State Technical & Community College, emphasizes the importance of CAD skills, experience in additive manufacturing, and hands-on skills in manual machining and CNC. Dr. Seokbin Lim Ph.D. , Pete V. Domenici Endowed Associate Professor and Department Chair at New Mexico Tech, notes that hands-on training and communication skills are highly valued in the field. Therefore, a mechanical design engineer resume should highlight these skills, along with relevant projects and experience.

3. Next, create a mechanical design engineer skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an mechanical design engineer resume

GD refers to Grade Delay and is often mentioned on report cards or academic records when the instructor of a particular subject decides to hold the grade of a student. This is usually done if the instructor wants the student to improve their grade by retaking the exam or doing something for extra credit that will ultimately enhance their overall grade. Eventually, when the grade is assigned, the GD is then replaced with the original grade.

The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is software that can simulate physical phenomenon with the help of numerical procedures. FEA helps companies in developing better and cost-effective products by reducing the number of physical prototypes.

Engineering design is defined as the method that engineers use to recognize and solve problems. It is an extensive and flexible approach to problem-solving and provides the necessary information needed regarding every step of the process. An engineering design is a collaborative effort of the team to identify problems underlying a process and find out ways to solve them.

A design review is a milestone within a product development process in which a design is evaluated based on its requirements. The purpose of design reviews is to examine the overall design or a specific aspect of a design at each stage of the development of a new or existing product.

Product design can be described as a process of imagining, creating, and iterating products that solve user's problems and talk about the specific needs of users in the market. Product design is an engineering disciple and it is the basic design and idea that goes before the mass production of the product.

Product development is the complete procedure of creating a product from concept until release of the final product. Product development has many stages after which a product is released into the market. Identifying the need, creating the opportunity, conceptualizing a product, and providing a solution, all are different stages of product development.

Engineering drawings are technical drawings that tell about the requirements for engineering components or equipment. Such drawings have standardized languages and symbols. There are multiple types of engineering drawings such as isometric drawing, orthographic or multiview drawing, schematic drawings, one view, and two view drawings, etc.

Top Skills for a Mechanical Design Engineer

  • CAD , 14.1%
  • Mechanical Design , 12.5%
  • Creo , 4.5%
  • Other Skills , 64.4%

4. List your mechanical design engineer experience

The most important part of any resume for a mechanical design engineer is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of mechanical design engineers" and "Managed a team of 6 mechanical design engineers over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

Mechanical Engineer Resume Sample and Template

Tips for writing your resume

To land the perfect job, you need the perfect resume. In today’s crowded job market, it is more important than ever to stand out among the competition. When you write your resume, it is vital that you get everything right, from the organization of the template to the details of your work experience. To make sure your resume is flawless, here are some tips for writing the best resume possible.

Let them know where to contact you

Your resume should begin with your contact information. It is very important that potential employers, having read your resume, know how to contact you! At the top of your resume, include your name, phone number, email address, and city.

Introduce yourself

A personal summary, though optional, is a great way to introduce yourself to an employer with your resume. This section is comprised of one or two paragraphs where you can feature your notable accomplishments and highlight your most valuable skills. Your summary should give employers a brief outline of your experience and capabilities and intrigue them to keep reading.

What do you do best?

Shorter than a work history section, in a skills section you can efficiently list your core competencies in a way that is direct and easy to read. Showcase the skills and abilities that you bring to the job, focussing on those which distinguish you from the competition. The more useful and unique your skills are, the more you will stand out to an employer.

Showcase your achievements

Display your work experience in reverse-chronological order, beginning with your most recent position at the top of the section. Describe for each job your title, responsibilities, and accomplishments, with a focus on performance and results rather than duties. Use action words like ‘developed, ‘produced’, and ‘delivered’ when describing your work history to create compelling and impactful descriptions of your experience. Highlighting quantifiable information, like performance metrics and revenue, is a great way to demonstrate your abilities.

What did you learn, and where did you learn it?

Your education section should include the name of any post-secondary schools you attended, the degrees you earned, and any academic distinctions you achieved that you deem worth featuring. If they are particularly relevant, you can also include major areas of study and important projects that you participated in. Like the work experience section, your education should be displayed in reverse-chronological order.

If you have a strong GPA (3.5 or above), consider including it in your education section. This can demonstrate your academic excellence and dedication to your studies. Additionally, if you have received any academic honors or awards, such as being on the Dean's List or graduating with honors, include them as well.

Here's an example of how to incorporate your GPA and academic achievements:

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Purdue University West Lafayette, IN Graduated: May 2020 GPA: 3.8/4.0 Honors: Summa Cum Laude, Dean's List (all semesters)

4. Keep it concise for experienced professionals

If you are a senior-level mechanical engineer with extensive work experience, your education section should be brief and to the point. Hiring managers will be more interested in your professional accomplishments and skills than your educational background.

Here's an example of a concise education section for a senior mechanical engineer:

M.S., Mechanical Engineering, Stanford University B.S., Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas at Austin

Avoid listing graduation years if you are concerned about potential age discrimination. Instead, focus on your most recent and relevant degrees.

  • Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1985-1990
  • M.S., Mechanical Engineering, University of Michigan, 1983-1985
  • B.S., Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 1979-1983

Design Engineer resume example

Meet Jason.

He’s the founder of the leading engineering firm in your city. He’s on the hunt for a new design engineer to join his team.

Jason’s firm has an impressive list of prestigious clients, and many of his former projects have gone on to win awards.

Joining his team as a design engineer would skyrocket your career.

But first you need to craft the perfect resume to impress the hiring manager.

You may have all of the qualities they’re looking for, but you must show them off in a way that makes you stand out from the other candidates.

We’re here to help you win that interview.

In this guide, we’re going to walk you through how to write a design engineer resume that will land you your dream job.

Let’s get started.

  • The best format for a design engineer resume that shows of your background
  • How to prove your past design success with real numbers
  • 8+ ways to highlight your duties as a design engineer
  • 20+ example technical and soft skills that prove you have what it takes to excel

Looking for related resumes?

  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Systems Engineer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Entry Level Mechanical Engineer

With the right mix of experience, education and skills, you’ll be a successful design engineer working on outstanding products.

You need to display these three key qualities in your resume, or else you won’t get hired in the first place.

Companies want to make sure they’re hiring the right design engineer since the job is so important. The products you design will directly impact many people.

You can highlight your excellency best with a reverse chronological resume format .

This resume format emphasizes your experience first - the most trusted way to prove your knowledge in design engineering.

The reverse chronological resume also lets you:

  • Talk about your education & qualifications
  • Show your chartered engineering status (if you have it)
  • Highlight your interest in the specific job you’re applying for

Here's what a recruiter will look for in your resume

  • Have you designed and engineered functional products? What were they?
  • Do you have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline?
  • Have you solved design engineering problems in the past that have produced positive results?
  • What industries are you most familiar with?

Answering these questions clearly in your resume will help the hiring manager decide whether or not they’ll read further. It all starts with an informative resume header.

Your resume header is the first impression the hiring manager will have of you.

While it may seem like a basic resume section that doesn’t need any thought, putting in the extra effort makes an impact.

Let’s say you’re applying to an engineering firm.

Your may start with a header that looks like this:

This header isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s very basic.

It lists the essential information about you: name, location , title and contact information . It doesn’t go above and beyond.

You can improve your header by adding extra elements such as:

  • A title that describes your seniority level
  • Your LinkedIn profile URL

This header checks all the boxes because it covers the essentials, but goes above and beyond by listing the seniority level of the candidate (Jr. Design Engineer), and displaying a LinkedIn profile URL for the recruiter to look up.

Quantitative data is key on a design engineer resume

Most candidates simply list their job responsibilities on their resume. Stand-out candidates prove their past success with quantitative data .

Not sure where to start?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • How many clients did you work with? What was the size of their budgets?
  • Did you optimize products to improve efficiency? Use percentages to make your point.
  • Do you have any publications or patents? How many?

This data belongs in your resume summary and experience section. Let’s talk about those now.

Your design engineer resume summary should complete two goals:

  • Prove to the hiring manager that you’re dedicated to landing that specific job role
  • Show you have the experience, qualifications & skills necessary to excel

Mirroring the keywords used in the job posting will show the hiring manager that you’ve done your research and that you’re genuinely interested in working for their company. Plus, it will make your resume ATS friendly . (Applicant Tracking Systems)

Summarizing your level of experience, skill-level and educational background in a concise way will make the hiring manager want to read more.

Here are two examples of a design engineer professional summary. The first one needs a bit of work, and we’ll tell you why. The second summary is a strong example you should follow.

This summary won’t land the candidate an interview. Why not?

  • It’s vague and generic. The summary isn’t personalized to the specific job posting.
  • It says nothing about their skill-level, experience-level and past success as a design engineer.

Here’s an example of an excellent design engineer summary:

This summary has it all! It has detailed information about the candidate’s experience, highlighting both their technical and soft skills.

The experience section of your resume should accomplish two things:

  • Prove you’ve been successful as a design engineer before
  • Show you have the right mix of technical and soft skills needed for the role

Before you write anything in the experience section, take a look at the job posting and review the responsibilities of the role, and the skills that they value most importantly.

This will help you narrow your focus about what you should mention when summarizing your past experience.

As a design engineer, your knowledge of design software will be important to the recruiter.

Note down how and when you have used software, such as AutoCAD, to complete your work.

Since you’ve already noted down key points from the job posting, you should know what software programs are necessary to know for the role.

List them directly within the experience section. Not only will this help your resume get picked up by applicant tracking systems, but it will tell the hiring manager exactly what they want to know.

Aside from your software and technical knowledge, having strong soft skills, and mentioning them in relation to your former roles, is essential to getting hired.

A huge part of the job as a design engineer is to work as a team, present your findings, and liaise with clients.

Proving to the hiring manager that you have the necessary collaboration and communication skills to do those things will make a great impression.

We’ll talk more about that later in this guide.

To get you started on writing your experience section, we found two examples of design engineer resumes for you - one is not so great, and the other is strong.

2 design engineer resume experience samples

  • • Used computer tools to design products
  • • Created prototypes and tested them
  • • Improved efficiency of existing products
  • • Presented designs to clients

This example may look fine at first glance, but there’s huge room for improvement. It only lists the responsibilities of their former role.

It doesn’t give the hiring manager any confidence that the candidate was actually successful in their former role, and can be trusted to be hired for this new one.

Here’s an example that will win over any hiring manager.

  • • Developed and tested 100+ functional prototypes
  • • Wrote technical documents to highlight improvements and findings to clients
  • • Facilitated projects using AutoCAD, Catia V5, and Enovia
  • • Analysed 300+ existing designs to maintain quality control, and minimized costs by an average of 30%.

This is an excellent example of an Experience blurb done well.

It includes quantitative data to show the candidate’s positive impact in their former role, building trust with the hiring manager, making them more likely to progress forward.

How to describe the duties of a design engineer on a resume

Here are some examples of design engineer responsibilities you can pick and choose from to add to your resume:

  • Developed prototypes for testing
  • Created technical reports to summarize findings
  • Carried out quality control procedures to identify performance problems
  • Improved functioning and efficiency of existing products with re-designs
  • Presented designs and observations to clients
  • Lead training sessions on design across other departments
  • Kept up to date with the latest industry trends
  • Maintained health and safety standards

The education section of your design engineer resume is one of the most important, since hiring managers want to ensure you’re fully qualified for the role.

It’s essential to highlight your education and qualifications in the best way possible, beginning with talking about your degree.

The most common university degrees for design engineers include:

  • Product Design
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Product Design Engineering Technology
  • Engineering Manufacturing

Most companies will require a Bachelor’s, or even a Master’s degree to be considered for a job.

In some unusual circumstances, you may get hired without any formal education, if the company offers apprenticeships and training programs.

While resume certifications can’t replace a university degree, having them can set you apart from other candidates. It’s important to remember that:

  • Not all certificates are industry-wide approved
  • Real experience is a better indication of performance

Here are some popular certifications for design engineering:

  • Autodesk ACU & ACP Certifications
  • MathWorks MAT Lab Certification Program
  • CATIA Certification
  • SOLIDWORKS Certification

Hiring managers want to see that you have the right mix of technical and soft skills in your resume skill section .

You should be familiar with design programs such as AutoCAD and Enovia. Check the job role description to see which programs the company favours.

Soft skills are often forgotten in resumes, especially in engineering roles. Candidates mistakenly think that their technical background is all that matters, but as a design engineer, you need a strong set of soft skills to get ahead.

You’ll need to present your designs, provide an explanation for your findings, analyze results, and communicate with your team, clients and your boss.

Here are a list of skills you can include in your design engineer resume.

15 technical skills to include on a design engineer resume

  • CAD Packages: Solidworks, Pro Engineer, AutoCAD
  • Rendering packages: Hypershot, V-Ray
  • Creating 3D models
  • Developing and implementing design standards
