Leigh Janiak ’s SXSW Film Festival horror hit “Honeymoon” belongs to a long line of films about people who may not know enough about the recent object of their admiration. Great horror movies have been built around the concept of protector as betrayer as people like Rosemary’s husband worked with the devil to destroy her baby. You may have married the perfect guy but did you really know him? It’s a relatable core concept for genre filmmaking—the fear that arises from the suggestion that the person sleeping next to you is not what he or she purports to be. For the most part, these thrillers and horror films are built around the male aggressor: a husband or boyfriend with a lethal secret. Janiak’s “Honeymoon” cleverly turns the gender table, making the lovely bride the one with something to hide. I wish the film withheld more information from its audience to raise the overall tension but it’s a solid genre pic, made so primarily by two entirely committed performances from its talented leads.

Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway play Bea and Paul, respectively. They’re beautiful, have great chemistry, and seem destined to have a lovely honeymoon in a remote cabin home. They can hike the woods, say hi to the locals and get the privacy newlyweds need to start their life together. Paul is kind, Bea is joyful—they’re bound to find happiness, right? It’s a movie called “Honeymoon,” what could go wrong?

The first sign of bad things to come pops up with eerie lights in the middle of the night. Then, our lovely couple has a “Body Snatchers”-esque encounter with a couple in town. Something doesn’t seem right in these eerie woods. Before you know it, Bea has gone sleepwalking, and come back a little, well, different. There are marks on her body that can’t be explained, and, most effectively of all, she doesn’t seem to be completely cognizant of Bea’s identity, or even normal human behavior. She doesn’t know how to make French toast. She can’t make coffee. Phrases are off and details of their history together seem fuzzy. And the lustful woman who came to the cabin has been replaced by someone who denies sex regularly. What the Hell is going on?

The film’s biggest flaw is that we know exactly what’s going on. The lights in the woods, the inconsistencies in human behavior—film history has taught us that Bea is not exactly who she used to be. I wish Janiak had let the relationship drama play out a bit longer. If “Honeymoon” had been a film in which we question Paul’s sanity as much as Bea’s personality change, it would have been even stronger. What if Bea wasn’t actually “different” but just a moody, inconsistent new bride? What if “Honeymoon” had kept more of its secrets until the final act?

Because Janiak didn’t make that decision, there are plot elements of “Honeymoon” that play out rather predictably. Having said that, it’s an enjoyable, well-made predictability. Janiak knows how to deal with the tonal shifts of the production and Leslie and Treadaway are both quite good here, appearing in basically every scene of a two-character, one-setting piece. In particular, Leslie has to go deliver on a lot of physically challenging moments and she’s excellent at conveying the reality of a terrifying situation. You can see the old Bea in the new Bea, which is the most terrifying aspect of “Honeymoon” overall. It’s not the massive changes that happen to our loved ones that scare us, but the slow realization that something’s just not quite right. At its best, “Honeymoon” transcends genre filmmaking to capture something to which we can all relate: that moment when you know something’s wrong in your relationship.

Love’s young dream turns into a nightmare in Leigh Janiak’s “Honeymoon,” a lean, low-budget debut that taps into newlywed anxiety with subtle wit and no small amount of style.

The look is throwback, but the concerns are timeless, as Bea (Rose Leslie) and Paul (Harry Treadaway) — cooing and cuddling nonstop — settle into her childhood cabin in Canada for an out-of-the-way honeymoon. For a while, it’s all gamboling in the grass and rowing on the lake; then Paul wakes one night to find his wife shivering and naked in the woods. There are strange marks on her thighs, and her memory seems faulty, but Paul isn’t terribly alarmed — not until Bea starts avoiding sex and forgetting how to make his French toast.

Fall Arts Preview - Times 100

How to wade through the crush of culture coming your way this season? Here’s a guide to 100 events that have us especially excited, in order of appearance.

Shooting in North Carolina, Ms. Janiak hides her budgetary constraints by keeping the special effects simple and her focus on the central relationship. Playing the emotional beats straight, Ms. Leslie (until recently, a regular on “Game of Thrones” ) gives Bea’s transformation an icy, inhuman edge, while Mr. Treadaway conveys his predicament with credible helplessness. When your new spouse starts behaving like a stranger, would you really go rushing to the authorities?

Less concerned with mystery than with the vulnerability of the besotted — an early reveal strongly hints at what skulks in the foliage — “Honeymoon,” like the much-hyped “ Gone Girl ,” presents a far more common terror: that the person you’ve pledged your life to was only a construct, after all. JEANNETTE CATSOULIS

“Honeymoon” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Rolls in the hay and abuse in the woods.

honeymoon 2014 movie review

SYNOPSIS OF “HONEYMOON” VIA ROTTEN TOMATOES:

“Young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to a remote lake country for their honeymoon, where the promise of private romance awaits them.  Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night.  As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.”

What a fucking great movie.  I loved everything about this movie and more.  I had first heard about this movie while listening to a podcast from KillerPOV and one of the co-host gave it rave reviews.  Then when I was doing research on horror movies from 2014 this movie popped up again. As soon as I saw that it was on Netflix instant I knew I had to watch it.

What makes this movie so great? The slow burn of tension and horror and mystery and suspense.  This is so hard for directors to do perfectly, and this director nailed it.  As I have mentioned numerous times, I rate my movies based on how much they can captivate me and this one had me captivated from the beginning.  There is not much going on in the movie, a newlywed couple escapes to the country for their honeymoon.  While there, Bea ends up in a forest in the middle of night with no memory of what happens.  From that point on, the movie gets really dark and sinister.  What did Bea find in the forest and what exactly happened to her?

Leigh Janiak is the director of Honeymoon and this is the first time she has done a feature film.  The fact that she was able to do such a tremendous job on drawing you into this movie is absolutely amazing to me. This movie does not get the credit it deserves nor the review it really should be getting from major film critics.  It doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or music cues to let you know when the big bad monster is coming.  It relies on your emotions and feelings about the characters within the film.

The other thing that makes this film work is the two lead actors – Harry Treadaway (Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful) and Rose Leslie (Ygritte in Game of Thrones).  Sure, their American accents aren’t great – but the chemistry that these two have is undeniable and is shown on the screen perfectly.  They seem like any couple that you would know – there performance is believable which helps play off of the viewers emotions.  If these performances weren’t on key, than this movie wouldn’t be as good as it is.

As I said in my first sentence I absolutely loved this movie.  It scared me and gave me goosebumps and kept me captivated to the very end.  There are a few questions that I wish I could have had answered but overall I like the subtle vagueness that the film left for the viewers.  If you are a horror fan and you want to see a great movie that doesn’t need to rely on gore and cheap scare tricks that I highly HIGHLY suggest watching this movie as soon as you can. My final review of Honeymoon is as follows:

Concept/Story: 2/2 Style/Effect: 2/2 Atmosphere: 2/2 Scares: 2/2 Rewatchability: 2/2

TOTAL:  10/10

Film review: honeymoon (2014).

Rob Getz 09/10/2018 Film Reviews

Honeymoon-2014-movie-Leigh-Janiak-(2)

A newlywed couple finds their lake-country honeymoon descend into chaos after Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of their first night.

How well does one truly know a significant other?  Is the length of a courtship through engagement and the exchanging of vows an ample amount of time to base the remainder of one’s existence upon?  Worth noting in this discussion is the fact that most married couples, happy or otherwise, will confess without a hint of irony that things indeed change after the wedding.  If the essential dynamic of a relationship is transformed by the utterance of two tiny words, was all that occurred prior merely the product of a giant floating head in front of a curtain?

Thankfully, we have horror movies to tackle these deep sociological issues, friends.  Kidding aside, one can’t deny the larger questions lurking beneath the simple surface of director Leigh Janiak’s freshman effort, “Honeymoon.”  A modest venture into “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” territory, our latest transcends premise to find its own distinctive, unsettling voice.  This one’s a quiet corker.

Honeymoon-2014-movie-Leigh-Janiak-(9)

If you can choke down the first half hour, that is.  We meet newlyweds Bea (Rose Leslie from “Game of Thrones”) and Paul (Harry Treadaway, Victor Frankenstein in “Penny Dreadful”) as they arrive at her family’s secluded lakefront cottage fresh from their nuptials.  Giddy with joy and unable to physically separate for longer than eighteen seconds, these initial moments could force even the most ardent admirer of romcoms to fight back bile.  Fear not, for the sequences serve as a calculated maneuver by Janiak and co-writer Phil Graziadei, offering subtle insights beyond the obvious particulars of how disgustingly in love the couple is.

The night following an uncomfortable reunion with a teen crush while buying supplies, Bea pulls a brief disappearing act and is found in the woods, naked and completely unaware of how she’d arrived there.  The episode is dismissed as sleepwalking, but Heather McIntosh’s brilliantly brooding score and the immediate concern in Paul’s eyes beg to differ.  That morning, she has forgotten how to make French toast or even a pot of coffee.  It isn’t long before she’s rehearsing excuses for withholding sex in a mirror and absently referring to her suitcase as the “clothes box.”

Honeymoon-2014-movie-Leigh-Janiak-(5)

It would classify as spoiler material to state that who or what Paul brought back from the forest isn’t exactly his new bride if “Honeymoon” didn’t shrewdly narrow focus to exclude other possibilities.  It could have easily played the “Is it all in his head?” card and catered to a thematic wild goose chase, but instead concentrates on Bea’s increasingly strange behavior and Paul’s slow realization that he is facing an unfathomable possibility.  Bright lights and shadowy figures lurking amongst the trees at the exact same time each night strengthen his suspicions.

Upon discovering Bea attempting a do-it-yourself abortion in the bathroom, Paul ties her to the bed and demands answers.  The interrogation is an emotional heartbreaker, as he quizzes her on general shared knowledge and tearfully pleads “Where is my wife?” when she fails the test.  Her insistence on identity is betrayed by what can only be described as a Cronenberg remaking “Eraserhead” scenario. In the few fleeting instances that require the presence of blood, “Honeymoon” doesn’t skimp on the ick factor.

The driving force that keeps proceedings popping even through the schmaltzy opening minutes is the combination of two outstanding leads.  Treadaway walks the fine line between denial and despair as Paul, sidestepping histrionics to cut a nuanced and ultimately tragic figure.  The far trickier role of Bea, however, is completely owned by Leslie’s revelatory turn.  In the best performance I’ve witnessed thus far this aged year, the frustration and barely concealed confusion that surely would accompany a waning humanity are expressed beautifully, fortifying Paul’s (and our) hope that some semblance of Bea still exists within.  Long story short, she’s incredible here.  Deserving of kudos as well are their grasps of the American dialect (she’s a Scot, he’s English), peppered with that amiable twang most thespians of the United Kingdom spend decades striving to lose yet rarely do unless they’re Gary Oldman.

Honeymoon-2014-movie-Leigh-Janiak-(6)

It’s surprising that Janiak doesn’t have so much as a short subject to her credit, given the level of maturity present in her script and direction.  She must have really been paying attention during the productions in which she served as an assistant.  So many budding auteurs have impressed with debuts in the past couple of years (Jeremy Gardner, Astron 6 and the Soskas to scrape the surface), keeping track of them all has grown cumbersome.  Hers is a name I’ll not soon forget and be looking out for in the future.

Honeymoon-2014-movie-Leigh-Janiak-(7)

Though the murky resolution will likely disappoint some and baffle others, “Honeymoon” is the breed of motion picture that could never possibly satisfy everyone in its outcome.  Incorporate too much explanation, you run the risk of convoluting the entire endeavor.  Leave it wide open, you’re bound to be met with a divergent cry for closure.  My assessment is usually dependent on whether or not the ending is indicative of what has come before.  In this case, it is.

Honeymoon-2014-movie-Leigh-Janiak-(8)

As for the veiled ruminations on commitment and intimacy, I’ll leave interpretations to you, friends.  At face value, “Honeymoon” is an exceptional and haunting piece of work, which is good enough for yours truly.  See it with someone you think you know. . .

Honeymoon Movie Twist Ending Explained

Honeymoon movie

Honeymoon 's crazy ending has a strong message for married couples.

Directed by Leigh Janiak, Honeymoon explores the story of a newly married couple who thinks that they are on their dream vacation, but ends up on a nightmare-infused experience instead.

The film premiered in theaters on September 12, 2014. It was added to Hulu on December 31.

What Happened to Paul & Bea in Honeymoon's Ending?

Harry Treadaway as Paul

In Honeymoon , Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) are a typical couple who are having a good time after just getting married.

After they decide to spend their honeymoon in a cabin owned by Bea's family, things go from cheesy and romantic to strange and terrifying.

During the night after they meet up with Will (Paul's childhood friend played by Ben Huber) and Annie (Hanna Brown), Paul sees his wife, Bea, naked in the nearby lake after sleepwalking.

Rose Leslie as Bea

The next day, Paul grows suspicious of Bea because his wife is not aware of her daily routine and exhibits weird behavior.

After a series of terrifying events happen that includes Paul framing Will and locking up Bea, the seemingly possessed Bea confesses to Paul that she saw a mysterious light that hypnotized her and a creature that impregnated her during the night when he found her naked near the cabin.

Upon discovering what happened, Paul tries to flee from the cabin, but Bea stops him and knocks him out.

Paul wakes up in a boat in the middle of the lake, with Bea telling him that she is only doing this to protect him from the mysterious creatures.

Paul then attempts to escape while begging for his wife to let him go, but Bea viciously throws him into the lake, essentially killing him.

Rose Leslie as Anna

At the end of Honeymoon , Bea is watching her wedding video and appears to be slowly transforming into an alien.

Annie, who is also taken over by aliens, shows up she and Bea go into the forest to join the mysterious creatures.

What Is the True Meaning of Honeymoon’s Ending?

Honeymoon 's ending leaves many unanswered questions, such as the identity of the aliens who took over Annie and Bea and the real reason why they were there in the first place.

Still, there is a deeper meaning behind the horror movie's twisted ending, specifically for married couples.

Honeymoon shows that the only thing that is constant for married couples is change, and both of them will discover something new about their partners at any given moment.

While Paul and Bea were a happy couple at first (complete with a cheesy public display of affection), the movie cements the idea that not all the time is a happy ending, especially after the challenges and outside pressure kick in.

At one point in the movie, a mysterious worm-like creature comes out of Bea, before ultimately dying. Some have theorized that this is the movie's way of showing aspects like pregnancy and abortion alongside the responsibilities that come along with it (that Bea doesn't want to have).

Given that Bea is the movie's central focus, it unveils the fact that she is truly not ready to start a married life with Paul. The light represents her escape or path to freedom, and the fact that she willingly follows it suggests that she has already embraced the idea of letting go.

Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of her husband Paul's life.

Honeymoon is now streaming on Hulu.

Positive Messages

This is horror at its most basic: bad things happening to good people. They react with fear and concern, but no real lessons are learned, and characters don't go above and beyond at any time.

Positive Role Models

The characters are either victims or scared. There's really nothing to admire or emulate.

Violence & Scariness

The movie mostly conjures up a sense of dread, but there's some gruesome violence toward the end. A woman stabs herself in the crotch, and blood is shown. A man removes a long, strange creature from her vagina. A man ties up a woman. They fight, and some bloody injuries are shown. A man throws a tantrum in a restaurant and smashes some lamps.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

A newlywed couple has sex several times, though nothing sensitive is shown. In a shower scene, the side of the woman's breast is visible. Her bottom is also visible in a night scene. She's also shown in a bra and panties. Oral sex is implied.

What's the Story?

Bea (Rose Leslie) and Paul ( Harry Treadaway ) are newlyweds, fresh from a wedding that mirrors their courtship. As they start their lives together, they embark on a honeymoon to Bea's family cabin in the woods. At first things are blissful. Then one evening they head to a local restaurant, where two of the locals are acting strangely. Later, Paul finds Bea standing in the middle of the woods at night, apparently having sleepwalked. After that, she starts acting strangely, forgetting things, and generally not seeming like herself. Paul grows more and more alarmed and eventually decides to leave. But it may be too late.

Is It Any Good?

HONEYMOON opens with some wedding video testimonials, and it looks like it's going to be yet another in the now oh-so-tired "found footage" subgenre, but thankfully Janiak has more in mind. Bea and Paul are annoyingly perky and cluelessly hopeful as the movie starts ... and also, it turns out, woefully unprepared to deal with anything resembling a real problem. (A discussion about the use of the word "womb" is the first sticking point.)

The characters can be annoying, but it appears that they might have been designed that way on purpose, as a way of illustrating the primal nature of male-female relationships. (What's missing in today's cute couple culture?) Janiak keeps switching things up, and nothing leads quite where you think it will. Moreover, her low-budget setting generates scares out of simple ideas. Who knew that burnt toast could send a chill up the spine?

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Honeymoon 's violence . When do viewers see the first really violent image? How does the movie build up to it? What's the ultimate effect? In general, what's scarier in movies -- the things you do see, or the things you don't?

How scary is the movie? What makes it different from other horror movies?

How does the movie play with your expectations? What did you expect to happen versus what actually happened?
