• The candidate must have completed a Master’s degree i.e. (MTech/ MSc/ MA/ MPhil/ MBA). And it must be a full-time Master’s course from a recognised university by the government.
• The overall grade point average of the candidate’s Master’s program must be at least 55% (or equivalent).
• Candidates under SC, ST, and OBC categories will be given 5%- or 10%-mark relaxations. Applicants must present their reservation certificate to use these benefits.
• The candidate must pass the PhD entrance exam.
• A No Objection Certificate (NOC) f rom the educational institution or company where candidates are employed is required. Candidates must have job experience in a related field for a part-time PhD.

How will I sustain myself for 4-5 years, if I have a family?

IIMA provides sufficient fellowship (including fees, boarding, lodging and stipend) for five years to doctoral students. Please refer later section for details.

Does it help to have an MBA degree before entering the Ph.D. program?

Not really. From the first year itself the student takes Ph.D. level courses alongwith some PGP courses as recommended by his/her Academic Adviser. Hence, a student coming from non-management background is equally placed with those having a management background. Please check the area pages in the Ph.D. Prgramme in Management Brochure for specific requirements. For example, P&QM area encourages students who have a quantitative training from various disciplines to apply for their programme. Similarly, students with a background in Psychology may find the work done in the Organizational Behaviour useful.

How do I apply? What is the process of admission to the programme? Where can I get the forms? Can I apply online?

Application form can be filled-in online. Application fee of Rs. 500/- can be paid through IIMA payment gateway. Candidates have to attach copies of academic certificates/testimonials and qualifying examination score card along with the application. The qualifying exams are: Scores on standardized tests ( CAT / GATE / UGC JRF / GMAT / GRE / ICAR-SRF)

What are the important deadlines?

What is the purpose of the interview? What is expected at the interview for IIMA? Does it help if I come prepared with a research proposal?

The purpose of the interview is to gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for her/his chosen high level of specialized area in the programme. It also gives the candidate an opportunity to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal. In addition to interview, some of the Areas may conduct written test.

Does the programme accept international students?

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details on the admission process and fees.

How selective is IIMA? What are my chances of getting admitted? How many students are admitted each year?

The selection process is very rigorous and involves four levels of screening and interviews. The number of seats are not fixed for the programme and depend upon the calibre of the applicant who goes through a fair and rigorous selection process.

Do you have an option of doing high level of specialized inter-disciplinary research?

Yes. You could specify this at the time of application. However, you will be housed in one area of specialization. You could take courses on highly specialized areas of study from a variety of areas and choose your thesis topic that cuts across disciplines.

Is the courses work at IIMA very difficult?

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigour and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The process of natural justice is followed in each such case.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D. program?

The key stages are

1. First year coursework (Ph.D. Programme Compulsory courses, Area Ph.D. Courses and some recommended PGP course/s),

How much flexibility exists in the Ph.D. program? Can I change my area of research during my stay at IIMA?

IIMA Ph.D. programme offers a mix of flexibility and rigidity to the students. Students are allowed to change their chosen area of specialized work during the first year at IIMA, if they fulfil specified criteria. Specific deadlines for doing so are provided in the Ph.D. programme Manual. IIMA offers high degree of flexibility in choosing areas of research. However a student is required to complete his/her area comprehensive exam by beginning of third year and thesis proposal defense within 9 months of the completion of area comprehensive examination. Details are available in the Ph.D. programme manual.

How do I choose my research topic?

A research topic requires interest and motivation of student and availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Are Ph.D. students required to teach?

What support is available for presenting research papers in indian and international conferences.

IIMA offers full support for attending up to 4 domestic conferences during the course of the programme. Competitive Travel Grants are available for attending international conferences as per the prevailing policy.

How do I find a job, after completing my Ph.D. studies?

Jobs depend on a student's competence and high level of specialization achieved during the programme. There are recruiters coming to the campus, faculty advisors provide references, and also through other informal/formal channels.

What is a phd degree  .

A PhD degree is a postgraduate research degree awarded after a student completes a thesis. It’s the highest academic degree in India and requires at least five years of research work, including coursework and exams. 

The word “ PhD ” stands for Doctor of Philosophy , which refers to someone who has earned this title by completing his/her doctoral studies (or “literae humaniores”) at an institution with a faculty granting such degrees. In other words: if you want to earn this degree from any university or college in India, you must first get admitted into one of their programs as an undergraduate student before being allowed access into their PhD program. 

Why pursue a PhD degree?  

A PhD degree program in India is a doctorate, which requires you to complete three years of full-time study. It’s considered higher than an MPhil (Master’s in Philosophy), which takes two years to complete. 

A professional doctorate (PD) is awarded to those who have completed a master’s degree in their field and seek further training and research work at the postdoctoral level. The PD program provides funding for doctoral studies and research facilities necessary for advanced study. This type of program aims at developing the skills needed by professionals working in their field but who may not necessarily have completed all requirements for receiving an academic doctorate, such as teaching experience or publishing articles during their time at university.

How to choose the right doctorate program?  

The first thing you should do is choose the right doctorate program. Many factors need to be kept in mind while selecting a program and deciding whether it’s right for you or not. Here are some tips: 

Choose one that aligns with your career goals. If your goal is to become a professor, then you should go for an MPhil/PhD degree course in Philosophy or Political Science; otherwise, if it’s more about earning money than becoming famous, then go for Law or Business Administration courses instead of Humanities subjects such as History, Literature etcetera.* Choose one that aligns with your academic interests.* Selecting a program based on personal interest can also lead to success but only if these interests have nothing against academics like poetry writing competitions etc. 

Difference between MS, MS in engineering, and PhD in engineering  

MS in engineering (MSEE) and MS in chemical engineering are offered through the same department but have different names. The MSEE is an undergraduate degree that can be completed within 2-3 years for those with a bachelor’s degree. It is designed to allow students to study specific fields of science and technology so that they might pursue advanced degrees at the PhD level or beyond later down the road. 

The MS in Chemical Engineering takes up four years of full-time study after earning an undergraduate degree as well as having completed applied research projects at local schools or industrial sites around your town/city where you live; this type of program tends to be more focused on technical skills than theoretical knowledge since it focuses primarily on developing practical applications rather than theories behind them (e.g., how do we design new machines?).

What are some common requirements for admission into a PhD degree program in India?  

You need to fulfill several requirements before applying for a PhD degree in India . Some of them include:

What is the duration of doing a PhD degree?  

The duration of a PhD degree depends on the subject you choose and the university you apply to. A PhD admission in 2024 is a 3-year course, meaning you must complete it within five years or less. 

If you plan to study something like literature or science, it will take longer than if you want to study social sciences or humanities. 

Is GRE required when applying for a PhD abroad?  

GRE is required for most universities, and getting your score as high as possible is a good idea. However, there are some exceptions: 

• PhD admission in 2024 doesn’t require the GRE (although some do). 
• PhD programs in China don’t require the GRE. 
• PhD programs in Germany don’t require the GRE as well. 

Do GRE scores matter when applying for a PhD abroad?  

While GRE scores are not a deciding factor for admission, they are used by many PhD degree programs to determine who they want to admit. 

So, if you have taken the test before and scored high on it, your chances of getting into a PhD program abroad are higher than if you had not taken it or scored poorly. However, this does not mean that those who do well in the GRE will automatically be admitted into any particular program on their application; all universities have different requirements and criteria for admission, so even if your score is above average (or even very high), there may still be other factors at play in determining whether or not you get accepted into a particular program (e.g., GPA).

Yes – A Department intends to admit students under the specified mode. No – A Department does not intend to admit students under the specified mode.

Minimum Eligibility Qualifications

ME / MTech / MPharm / MBA / MPhil (minimum of 60% aggregate)* MSc/BE/BPharm or an equivalent degree (minimum of 60% aggregate)* For admission into Humanities and Social Sciences, MA degree (minimum of 55% aggregate)* For part-time applicants, a minimum of one-year experience in the related field of study is required

In addition, Departments may set specific admission criteria for shortlisting. Meeting the minimum eligibility qualifications does not guarantee admission into the PhD program. Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for an admission test, which may comprise a written exam and/or interview. Information on specific Departments and related research activities is available on the Department homepage of respective campuses.

Full-time students

Preferably individuals who would like to pursue PhD in-house, residing on campus.

Part-time students

Preferably individuals who are working in organizations providing basic facilities and an environment for research.

Financial Assistance

Full-time PhD students admitted into the PhD program are eligible to be considered for an Institute fellowship of Rs. 34,000 or Rs. 37,000 per month in the first year based on their qualifications at the time of admission. Students admitted with M.E./M.Tech./M.Pharm./MBA/M.Phil. or an equivalent Degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 37,000/-. Students admitted with M.Sc./B.E./B.Pharm. or an equivalent degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 34,000/-. These students on successful completion of coursework will receive Rs. 37,000/- from the Semester following the one in which the course work was completed Higher fellowship may be made available in subsequent years. Consideration for Institute fellowship will be as per Institute norms. It will be obligatory on the part of every admitted full time student to undertake 8 hours (per week) of work as assigned to him/her by the institute.

Time Span  to complete the PhD

A Ph.D. course in India generally takes 3 years, and the maximum time that one can get the Ph.D. done is 5 to 6 years. The aspirants need to select a topic of their choice and then carry out in-depth research in that field. However, the time can vary from one institute to another. Some of the institutes can allow you more flexibility in the number of years in which you can complete your PhD. However, the minimum time is 3 years to complete a PhD course in India.

The Eligibility to do Ph.D. in India

• Master’s degree holders are eligible for admission to doctoral programs. A Master’s in Philosophy can also be a criterion to pursue a Ph.D. in a few topics.
• The college students must have a minimum of 55% of post-graduation marks. In specific disciplines and for specific candidates, these criteria can be relaxed. The candidates can check the relevant universities where they aspire to take admission.
• In a few universities, admission is based on interviews, which can be supplemented by a written exam.

Normally, as an eligibility criterion, A Master’s degree or M.Phil from an accredited university is required to pursue a PhD program, and the minimum required postgraduate marks should be 55%. This minimum mark criterion is applicable to all disciplines except for certain disciplines like Engineering and Technology in specific universities.

Usually, each university can have its unique entrance tests with possible exemptions for candidates who have successfully cleared exams, such as mentioned below:

UGC NET, CSIR / ICAR (ASRB), ICAR-AICE-JRF/SRF (PhD) / GPAT / ICMR / GATE / DST – INSPIRE

One-year Ph.D. programs in India

To start with, it can be safely said that it is rare. Usually, 3 years is the minimum for completing a PhD degree, and some even go up to 7 years to complete it. However, for a select group of candidates, it is possible to complete their PhDs in just 2 years. In rare cases, students can also complete their PhD in just 1 year. It’s a rare possibility. A strong academic background and academic achievements are important to achieve this.

Students also need to be aware of certain scams by certain private universities that offer 1 year PhD programs. Some even offer PhD admission with gaps in your qualifications. You may just be wasting your time and may not be able to achieve your aim with such degrees. One-year programs are rare, and only a select few with outstanding academic achievements can go for them.

Can candidates pursuing PhD get fellowships?

The answer is yes and no. Candidates who have completed their postgraduate programs with a minimum of 55% in a relevant field and have completed entrance exams for PhD such as GATE, UGC NET, CSIR NET, JEST, and other recognized exams are eligible for fellowships. However, UGC NET scores are important and are now accepted as criteria for admission to PhD.

Can PhD be done by distant mode in India:

The answer is no. It was possible before 2017, but a PhD degree pursued through distance education is not recognized after 2017. You can check the UGC website for confirmation.

• Ph.D. Programme

The Ph.D. programme is designed to create academic researchers as well as professionals who are capable of conducting policy analysis, relating to national and global economic and development issues, from a quantitative and inter-disciplinary perspective. While an interdisciplinary approach is encouraged, the programme lays somewhat larger emphasis on economics to provide an integrated framework within which various development issues can be addressed. Minimum duration of the Ph.D programme is 3 years. Ph.D. programmes involve successful completion of course work as well as submission of dissertation. M.Sc. stream students who would like to register for a Ph.D. degree need to pass the oral comprehensive examination in the form of proposal cum evaluation seminar and fulfil prescribed course and minimum grade requirements.

Admission Eligibility

(i) The applicants to Ph.D. programmes must have valid UGC-JRF/CSIR-JRF or other international level scholarship to pursue Ph.D. (ii) The applicants to PhD programmes must have studied Mathematics at the higher secondary or higher level. (iii) The applicants to PhD programmes must have the qualifying percentage of marks or its equivalent in the qualifying degrees as indicated below:

The minimum duration of the PhD programmes at IGIDR is of three years including course work. Students are also required to pass their proposal evaluation comprehensive examination, external thesis evaluation followed by viva-voce examination before conferment of Ph.D. Degree.

• PhD students have to pay a tuition fee of ₹ 25,000/- per semester and a hostel fee, which is 8% of their stipend amount per month.
• All students residing in the hostel will have to pay water and electricity charges as per actuals and make payments to the caterer against the food they consume. For students residing in guest house/Hostel block, electricity charges will be Rs.600/- per month.
• The tuition and other fees may be revised from time to time.

Financial Assistance

• PhD students will receive a monthly stipend of ₹31,000/- in the first two years. Those students, who fulfil the terms and conditions for PhD registration, will receive a monthly stipend of ₹43,750/- after their PhD registration in the third year. PhD students are required to provide part time research or teaching assistantship from their second year onwards.
• PhD students who enrol after successful completion of their MSc or MPhil at IGIDR will receive a stipend for three years, ₹31000/- before and ₹43,750/- after their PhD registration.

A majority of IGIDR PhD are placed as post-doctoral fellows or as faculty members in leading academic institutions in India and abroad, including Centre for Development Studies, Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP, Formerly Brookings India), Centurion Education at Chhattisgarh, Delhi School of Economics, Indian Institute of Management at various locations, Indian Institute of Technology at various locations, Madras School of Economics, NABARD, Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics NMIMS University, Trinity College, UNESCO Paris, and University of Manchester among others or in think tanks/research institutes like Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP).

The duration of the scholarship is 2 years. To enroll to this scholarship program candidates must have completed their post graduation and they should be not more than 35 years old.

Google PhD Fellowship India Program

Google is offering Google PhD Fellowship India Program for the students wishing to pursue  PhD courses in computer science  or related post completing their masters studies. The main initiative of the scheme is to support the students to cover their expenses by offering a monthly fellowship and it also provides a chance to do an internship at Google. The average Fellowship given to the candidates in 4-years is around INR 26,89,160.

ICHR Junior Research Fellowships (JRF)

Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) Junior Research Fellowships is offered to those candidates who are pursuing PhD in the field of Historical studies. To get benefit of this scheme students must qualify an online entrance exam followed by presentation-cum-interview. On an average, candidates receive INR 16,500 to INR 17,600 per month for 2-years as a Fellowship under ICHR Junior Research Fellowships.

Maulana Azad National Fellowship

Maulana Azad National Fellowship is a scheme to support financially weak students who wish to pursue research or doctorate courses. The Fellowship program is started by the Ministry of Minority Affairs of the Government of India. It can be availed by those candidates whose family income is less than INR 6,00,000. Under this Fellowship program, scholars receive INR 28,000 per month for 5-years.

NCERT Doctoral Fellowship for PhD

The main objective of NCERT Doctoral Fellowship for PhD is to help and support the meritorious students to cover their expenses on tuition fee, accommodations, books and other charges. To avail the Fellowship students must enroll for PhD programmes in a recognized University. Also one must qualify an entrance test such as the NET exam. The Fellowship is offered for the duration of 3-years. For NET exam qualified candidates, the Fellowship amount is INR 25,000 while for non qualified candidates it is INR 23,000.

CSIR-UGC JRF NET Fellowship

CSIR-UGC JRF NET Fellowship is a fully-funded Fellowship program which can be availed by the candidates wishing to pursue research or doctoral courses in the field of Life Sciences, Chemical Science, Engineering, Earth & Atmosphere and other related fields. To be eligible for this Fellowship one must qualify the National Entrance Test (NET) conducted by CSIR. The average Fellowship for the candidates is between INR 20,000 to INR 31,000 per month for 2-years.

Numerous students in India apply to get scholarships via GATE. Candidates sitting for the GATE entrance exam and scoring well, will be awarded the scholarship. Also the eligibility for PhD scholarships via GATE varies organization-wsie. 

GATE Financial Assistance  is available for students who want to do a PhD. The scholarship is available for a duration of 5 years.

• Candidates must have a valid GATE score at the time of application for the assistance to be eligible.
• Part-time courses are not eligible as it is for full time only
• Bank Account name of general savings account and the candidate name should be the same and joint accounts are not eligible.

Actor Hina Khan shared her health update in a new video on Instagram on September 2. She revealed that she is done with five infusions of chemotherapy and still has three more to go. In the video, Hina explained that there are good days and bad days and how she is continuing her fight. The actor also urged fans to keep her in their prayers.

Hina was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer a few months ago. She is undergoing chemotheraphy as part of the treatment. On September 2, she shared a video with the caption, "Life update, DUA (sic)."

In the video, she said, "I know I sometimes disappear, and you all get worried about where I am and how I'm doing. But I'm okay I've completed my fifth chemo infusion, with three more to go."

She further said, "Some days are hard, very very very very hard. Some days are good. Like today is a good day and I feel nice and better. And sometimes it is okay to vanish because I need that time to heal and to feel better. Rest is all good, you all just keep praying. It is a phase, it will pass. And I am going to be okay. I have full faith in the almighty. And I am fighting. So, yeah keep me in your prayers and lots of love."

British actor Ian McKellen said on Monday (Sep 2) he feared he would die when he lost his footing and fell off a London stage mid-performance in June .

McKellen, 85, was starring in Player Kings, combining William Shakespeare's Henry IV, Parts One And Two, in the capital's West End theatre district, when he tripped during a fight scene.

The actor, who is best known for playing Gandalf in the film versions of Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit and was also Magneto in the X-Men movies, was taken to hospital. He did not return to the role for the rest of the tour.

"I am absolutely physically recovered," McKellen told BBC Radio. "It is emotionally that I've got some residue that I've got to deal with. I said to myself as I slid off the stage ... 'this is the end', these were the words in my mind."

"Apparently I shouted out, 'My neck is broken, I am dying'. I don't remember saying that. So there was a lot going on in my head as the body responded to the fall."

McKellen broke his wrist and chipped a vertebrae in the fall but said he was saved from more serious injury by the padding of the suit he was wearing to play the overweight character John Falstaff.

In a separate interview with BBC television, McKellen, whose stage career stretches back to 1961, said he had no plans to retire from acting and did not want anyone else to play Gandalf in the next instalment of the Lord of the Rings franchise, due in 2026.

McKellen's latest film, The Critic, based on the novel Curtain Call by Anthony Quinn, in which he plays powerful theatre critic Jimmy Erskine in 1930s London, is out in cinemas later this month.

Candidates are requested to check the eligibility criteria before filling the application form. Candidates found ineligible will be rejected at any stage in the admission process and no grievances will be entertained in this regard. Applicants will be shortlisted for the Research Aptitude Test (RAT) on the basis of them meeting the following considerations with regard to educational qualifications and research proposal:

1. Educational Qualifications: The minimum academic qualification for admission to the Ph.D programmes is a Second Class Master’s or equivalent degree in Psychology ( MA/MSc in Psychology) awarded by a recognised university in India or abroad, with at least an average of 55 per cent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.5 under the seven-point scale of the University Grants Commission (UGC). In the case of SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled candidates, the minimum eligibility is an average of 45 per cent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 2.5 under the seven-point scale of the University Grants Commission (UGC) .

2. Candidates who have an M.Phil or equivalent degree awarded by a recognized university in India or abroad are also eligible to apply for the Ph.D Programme.

3. Submission of a research proposal is a compulsory requirement for admission for the Ph.D. Programme. A research proposal consisting of approximately 1,000 words should accompany the proposal and indicate the Specification of the broad field of study, Statement of the research problem and scope and objectives of the study, rationale for and the significance of the study, methodology to be followed, references, and the candidate’s research/work experience in that area, if any.
