A visit to the Zoo is always very interesting. Last Sunday I went to the Delhi Zoo with my friends. First of all we saw apes and monkeys in different cages. They were climbing up and down their cage. In other cages, tigers, lions, bears, foxes, wolves, and zebras were kept.

We also saw deer and kangaroos. Next, we saw many varieties of birds like cranes, ducks, pigeons, parrots, kingfishers, owls, etc. We also saw our national bird peacock in the zoo. Then we came to the glass houses. Animals of different kinds and colour were kept in them. At last, we enjoyed an elephant ride and returned home.

Last Sunday, I visited a zoo with my family. First, we went round the bird’s section. We saw parrots, sparrows, pigeons, peacocks, eagles, and vultures. Then we saw the cages of wild animals like tigers, lions, and leopards. A lion was walking up and down restlessly. It often roared furiously. The baby tigers were playing in their cage.

We saw the deer park, where only the deer were kept. We also saw zebras, bears, foxes, giraffes, a hippo, and a rhino. Then we went to the huge enclosure where the elephants were kept. They were eating grasses, leaves, and bananas. We enjoyed watching the monkeys.

A zoo is a place where animals and birds are kept for public display. We, the three friends, went to the Alipore Zoo, Kolkata. We saw two elephants, tied with iron chains by their hind legs. The visitors offered them bananas or nuts which they gladly accepted and swallowed. We were greatly amused to see the huge animals from so near.

Then we visited the bird’s section. There were hundreds of birds. They were of various colours and had lovely plumage (feathers). Their chirping produced soft music. The twittering of sparrows was very pleasant to the ear. At some distance, there was a big pool of water. Many ducks and swans were swimming gracefully in it. We also saw a tank which contained small fishes of fine colours.

Then we came to the cages of tigers, panthers, leopards and lions. They were wonderful. The serpent house gave us a new experience. We saw there various types of snakes on the first floor. Then we saw the bisons, the camels, the ostriches and the bats. The zebras and giraffes were really beautiful who looked innocent and friendly.

It was about 2 P.M when we had taken some light refreshment in the zoo canteen. In this way, we passed the day with much delight and acquired a wonderful experience.

A Visit To A Zoo is very thrilling. I went to see the zoo with my younger brother. One is surprised to see such a variety of animals and birds. It was an interesting sight. First of all, we saw the monkeys. They were of many kinds and very amusing. We offered some nuts to them.

Then we came to the lions. They looked very fierce and majestic. They were kept in an open place enclosed with high iron railings. Sometimes they roared terribly. Next, we saw the tigers. They had yellow skins with black stripes on them. In the next two cages, there were a wolf and a fox. The wolf was sleeping, but the fox was walking within the cage.

Then we saw the long-necked giraffe, the dark-striped zebra, the thick-skinned rhinoceros, and a huge elephant with beautiful ivory tusks. We were very pleased to see them. After this, we came to the glass houses where reptiles were kept. There were snakes, cobras, and serpents. Some of them looked fearful. We did not stay there long.

Then we came to the fences where peacocks were kept. It was a treat to see one of them in his pride (i.e. with his tail spread like a fan).

We stayed three for three hours. We were tired. At last, we went to the cafe and had some refreshment and tea. Then we returned home. We enjoyed our visit very much.

Introduction:.

Everyone needs relaxation and an occasional deviation from the drudgeries of daily existence. A visit to a zoo can offer him these. At the same time, it is a learning experience. It was with this intention that visited the Alipore Zoological Garden last 25th December with some of my friends. This visit was memorable because it was both enjoyable and educational.

Entering the Zoo:

We reached the gate of the zoo in a taxi around 10 am. One has to buy tickets to enter the zoo. A number of visitors were already standing in a queue before the ticket counter. We stood behind them, got our tickets and entered the big arena of the zoo.

Various Types of Birds and Animals:

We crossed the green sward and were greeted by varieties of monkeys in cages. Monkeys and baboons were jumping on the trees within their enclosures. When some people threw food at them, they immediately jumped down from the trees to eat. Some children were making faces at them.

Then, we came across a beautiful lake in which some water birds like ducks and swans were present. There were some migratory birds as well. As we moved, we came to the big netted enclosure in which birds were kept. There were sparrows, parrots, and many other birds. Most of them were twittering, chirping and whistling. But the owls were sitting with their eyes closed as if they were lost in deep thought. The chirping of the birds went on ringing deep in my heart. In their songs, I heard the voice of nature to which the whole universe surrendered. I felt that all was right with the world.

We visited the tigers, lions, zebras, giraffes, rhinos and elephants. Roars of the lions and the tigers were deafening. We found a tiger pacing restlessly with its bloodshot eyes. It was strongly built.

Then we came across a garden in which stags and deer were frisking about. These animals were very agile and beautiful.

Our next halt was at the aquarium section. There were fishes of many species and colours. To see them swimming to and fro in the water was really a rewarding experience. Just beside this enclosure, was the cage of a black bear. It attracted a mammoth gathering. The bear was playing many tricks that thrilled us. Some people offered it eatables which it gulped at once.

Leaving the Zoo:

At about 2 pm, feeling tired, we rested and relaxed on the grassy ground for half an hour. The fragrance of flowers coming from somewhere was really soothing. We again began to stroll around the zoo after having our lunch. We saw a variety of amphibians like crocodiles, snakes, frogs, and a variety of other creatures. Then we hired a boat and enjoyed a short pleasurable ride in the canal. It was around 5 pm when we came out of the zoo. We boarded a bus, casting our last and lingering look on the zoo.

Conclusion:

I reached home in a cheerful mood. This visit refreshed my mind and deepened my awareness of the animal world.

Short on a Visit to a Zoo Essay

Last Sunday, my family and I went to the zoo. It was a sunny day and we got there at 8 am. When we arrived, there was a big crowd at the entrance. Some people were buying tickets, and others were just enjoying the nice weather and chatting.

Inside, we found a lovely lake with ducks and swans swimming around. It was pretty cool to see all those white ducks on the water. As we walked around, we came across a place with lots of birds – parrots, pigeons, eagles, and sparrows of different colors. The birds were making some enchanting music, and we stopped to enjoy it for a bit.

Next, we saw big cats like leopards, lions, tigers, and tigresses. One lion even rushed towards us, and its roars were really loud and scary. Moving on, we checked out a tiger's den. Later, we visited an aquarium with colorful fishes and dolphins happily playing in the water. Near the end, we saw sad polar bears in an enclosure, so we gave them some food. My Experience At The Zoo

In the zoo I visited, you could either take a toy train that moved slowly to all the animal cages, or you could walk along the paths next to the enclosures' animal inhabitants. I chose to take the train and it was such a unique experience. It took us to each animal's location and stopped for a sufficient amount of time so we could see inside. The zoo resembled a miniature forest where the jungle animals resided. I saw a magnificent tiger walking gracefully inside its enclosure. I was ecstatic to see a bear playing with a plank of wood that zoo staff had left there. There were also various parrot species, each with stunning wings and vivid colours. I spent about an hour in close proximity to them since they were so marvellous.

I also saw a lot of different birds of various colours and textures, they were beautiful to look at. The zoo administrator allowed me to feed some of them—it was a wonderful experience. I was a bit scared at first but once they settled down around me, I felt at ease. I even petted them lightly. Afterwards, I had lunch with my parents in a cafeteria at the zoo. The food was delicious and it was all named after different animals. I’m definitely looking forward to the next time I’ll visit here, hopefully with all my friends.

Winter vacations are always fun. Our family occasionally likes to explore recreational spots from time to time. Last year at the onset of winter, the weather was pleasant, and we had an opportunity to visit the famous Deli zoo. We packed some snacks, got the camera, and started our journey. Deli zoo covers a vast area and is located in our city centre. It is about 20 kilometres from our house. By the time we reached there, it was already 11 a.m.

My dad got the tickets from the booking counter, and we walked in through the huge entry gate. The pathway was filled with tall trees. Many eye-catching signboards were left around the corners. They led us towards the direction of the botanical garden. I was excited to see the colourful patches of different flowers. There were decorative shrubs that were carved into beautiful shapes.

Walking down the lane, we discovered a huge lake which contained swans and ducks. These water-birds were swimming and enjoying their time. It was a delight to watch them. Suddenly, I got distracted by the frequent chirping of birds. I turned around to find an entire section filled with sparrows, peacocks, pigeons, and parrots. Some of them were fluttering their wings.

Next, we went on a toy train covering a full round of the zoo. We could watch the tigers and leopards sleeping in their den. Some children started laughing at the site of a big bear waving its hand. We also saw elephants, deers, and monkeys. After enjoying the joy ride, we visited the aquarium. There were so many strange-looking aquatic creatures. I got amazed by the different kinds of fishes.

It was once I visited a zoo when I was a kid. During the summer holidays, every family makes a plan for visiting a zoo so that their children could get refreshing air and happily enjoy the adventure to watch the animals. I am lucky that my family took me to the zoo. After we reached there at the entrance of the zoo, there was a ticket counter for buying the tickets.

There was a small box fixed with the counter to store the items. I was so delighted to see all the things at the zoo. It was filled with trees all round to provide fresh air to animals and oxygen to every person. I saw many types of creatures from birds to the lion to the reptiles are found in the zoo. I had so much enjoyment when I had gone there.

There I had watched all the animals and heard the sweet sound of birds and the lion’s roaring too. I saw many birds and they were looking very beautiful that were ostriches, sparrows, peacocks, pigeons, nightingale, crane, kingfisher that were having so pretty feathers. Peacock has its colorful feathers and it dances too.

Various animals are found here with natural habitat. The monkeys are naughty as they jump and climb from one tree to another. They perform various tricks and they make funny faces and children imitate them as what they do. Other animals like rhinoceros, tiger, wild bear, deer, and giraffes were also there. They were kept in big cages.

I had gone for boat riding with my father and took a ride of elephants too. There were so many trees so they provide shade so that people can sit under the tree. I sat with my mother and father and enjoy tasty sandwiches and drank water.

I saw many other children who were playing. They were swinging on a see-saw and playing ice and spy, and running everywhere. There, I saw a pond having ducks and swam swimming. There were many golden and varieties of fishes.

I had explored and was happy once I visited there. I got aware of animals and learned to share their love with animals. I was said by the person taking not to harm them or make their fun.

I had learned new things about animals, their names and in which environment they live and what they eat. There was a board with writing that, “Children keep their distance from the animals” because of a roar of a lion or noise made by any other animal could scare them badly.

The zoo was covered with many nice things on a large piece of land for fitting the big-sized and small-sized animals wherever needed. I was happy to see the families who came with their cell phones and opened the camera to click the photos with their children playing and having full fun.

After leaving the zoo, I came outside the zoo, with my family I saw there were so many small shops to buy the food to eat in case you do not take your lunch with yourself. Various thela walas were selling bhelpuri, chaat, pani puri, fast food, ice creams, samosa and much more for everyone.

The price of the food was low cost. Many people were standing near the toys stall separately for the children to buy and also the near to it was the departmental store for buying a bottle of mineral water or cold drinks to end the thirst.

There were many animals brought in the zoo from the outside world. They were adored nicely and looked after with great care. They were looking after them and feeding them properly with high nutritional food. Lastly, I was so much tired after having an adventure, playing and having a boat and elephant ride. I got back home with my parents for taking rest.

Last weekend, my father wanted to take us out somewhere. So we decided to go to the zoo. My mother made some sandwiches and packed some fruits. Father took his camera along, and we all left for the zoo.

Outside, it was warm and sunny. After an hour’s drive, we reached the zoo. The place was crowded. There were vendors selling balloons, caps, eatables and lot of other things.

My father bought three tickets and we all walked into the zoo. Inside we boarded a small train which took us around the park. I was so excited that I kept jumping on my seat.

As the train moved slowly around the park, we saw a lion, a white tiger, hippopotamus, deer, giraffes, mongoose, bison, wolves and hyenas.

After the train ride, we sat in a restaurant and had our lunch. While walking around the zoo, I saw boards which warned us not to feed the animals. I could not understand the reason behind it. When I asked my father about it, he explained that our food might harm the animals. He also told me that the zoo authorities take care of the animals in best possible manner.

After lunch, we left for our home though I wanted to stay back and go for the train ride again.

Last week I, with the students of all Classes, made a program to visit the Zoo.

We took permission from our parents and Master/Principal, who very gladly allowed it. The sportsman in charge of the school/ college was the leader of the party. He took a bus and instructed us to be present till 08.00 A.M. The whole night was spent arranging foods and other items. Before 08.00 A.M. I reached the school/college. The Sport In charge arrived with a bus and we got into it. After a while, the bus started. The bus was smoothly running on the road and we were enjoying to see them

At about 09.00 A. M. we reached the main gate of the Zoo. We if got down from the bus and the Sports In charge purchased tickets.

I After that we entered in the Zoo. There was great rush of children and women. However, we collected our Lunch Boxes, Tape Recorders and other things and kept aside. A peon was left to guard them. We walked in the Zoo and became too much delighted to see different types of birds, pea cocks and swans. When we went before the cages of tigers, one of our friends became nervous to see the tigers. We rode on the elephant. At about 13.00 o’clock, we took our lunch and rested for some time. After that, we enjoyed with the crocodiles.

The visit was too much enjoying Such entertainment makes a student fresh and delighted and we should visit different interesting! Place at least twice a year. This gives more knowledge and awar eness of such things which are not known.

A Visit to a Zoo Essay (200 words)

Last week I had visited the zoo with my classmates and teachers on a school trip. It was a great fun experience and the memories still bring a smile to my face. I am going to narrate that experience in this essay.

The zoo I visited had two options – either you can walk on the pathways alongside the animal enclosure or you can board a toy train that slowly takes you to all the animals’ enclosures. The children chose a toy train tour and I bet it was the best train tour I ever had. The train took us to all the animals’ cages and halted for a decent period to let us observe them.

The zoo was like a mini forest or a town where our jungle friends live. We saw the majestic tiger walking graciously inside its enclosure. We were overjoyed to see a bear playing with a log of wood that has been left there by the zoo workers. There were also different kinds of parrots with beautiful wings and bright colors. They were so beautiful that we spent almost an hour near their enclosure.

Finally, we left the zoo with a heavy heart. We all wished if we could have stayed just a couple of hours more. Anyway, it isn’t good to disturb the animals during the night. I look forward to visiting the zoo soon again with my family.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Leaders Visit China; Meet Giant Panda Pair To Be Cared For By San Diego Zoo

SAN DIEGO (April 29, 2024) – San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance conservation and care team leaders recently visited China and met Yun Chuan (pronounced yoon chu-an) and Xin Bao (pronounced sing bao) the two giant pandas to be cared for by San Diego Zoo.

“It was an honor to see Yun Chuan and Xin Bao in person and meet our conservation partners caring for them at the Wolong and Bifengxia Panda Bases,” said Dr. Megan Owen, vice president of conservation science at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “Yun Chuan’s lineage has deep connections to the San Diego Zoo and we’re excited by the prospect of caring for them.”

Yun Chuan is a nearly five-year-old male panda. He is described as mild-mannered, gentle and lovable. His mother, Zhen Zhen (pronounced jen jen), was born at San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun (pronounced bye yoon) and Gao Gao (pronounced gow gow). The first character of his name, “Yun,” is a nod to his grandmother Bai Yun, who thrived at San Diego Zoo for 23 years. The second character of his name, “Chuan,” refers to the province of Sichuan where he hails from Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base.

Xin Bao is a nearly four-year-old female giant panda who was born in Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base. She is described as a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears. Her name means a “new treasure of prosperity and abundance.”

“Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special. It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego,” said Owen.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance leaders were in China meeting with conservation partners from China Wildlife Conservation Association on prospective research programs to protect and conserve giant pandas and their habitat. They also met with giant panda care specialists to discuss and collaborate on specialized care and nutrition programs for pandas.

The date of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao’s exact arrival in San Diego is not yet known, as San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is working through the necessary steps with its U.S. and Chinese conservation partners, looking forward to a prospective arrival this summer.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has a nearly 30-year conservation partnership with leading conservation institutions in China focused on protecting and recovering giant pandas and the bamboo forests they depend on. These include critical findings on giant panda reproductive behavior and physiology, nutritional requirements, habitat needs and genetic research among other areas of focus. The efforts include developing a giant panda milk formula and, with our partners, other neonatal conservation techniques that dramatically increased survival rates for nursery-reared cubs from 5% to 95%, the first successful artificial insemination of a giant panda outside of China and contributing valuable expertise to efforts led by Chinese scientists to track wild giant pandas at the Foping National Nature Reserve using GPS technology. These collaborative efforts contributed to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List downgrading the giant panda from Endangered to Vulnerable in 2021.

Although the conservation status of the giant panda is improving, there is still much work needed to ensure they remain on the path to recovery with healthy populations and flourishing ecosystems. The conservation collaboration between San Diego Zoo Wildlife Association and China Wildlife Conservation Association aims to improve giant panda population health and resilience in some of the smallest and most isolated populations vulnerable to extinction and loss of genetic diversity.

“Our partnership over the decades has served as a powerful example of how, when we work together, we can achieve what was once thought to be impossible,” said Owen. “We have a shared goal of creating a sustainable future for giant pandas.”

Cheetahs and dogs have been pals for decades at the Cincinnati Zoo. We learned how it works

Rozi, a 2-year-old cheetah, came to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden from the Wildlife Safari in Oregon in 2022 as a single cub, rejected by her mother. But she wasn't alone for long. Through the zoo's Cat Ambassador Program, Rozi met Daisy, an adopted mixed-breed puppy, and made a once-in-a-lifetime friend.

Cheetahs are, by nature, solitary creatures when they reach maturity around age 2, Andie Haugen, senior trainer at the zoo's Cat Ambassador Program, said. However, they normally grow up with siblings, with whom they play, chase and develop important skills. Since 1981, the Cincinnati Zoo has paired single cheetah cubs with puppies to replicate this bond.

"They're like surrogate siblings, essentially, to the cheetah," Haugen said.

The Enquirer met Remus and Moose, the Cat Ambassador Program's two other dogs, watched Daisy and Rozi play and learned more about the history of this unlikely, but important, friendship.

How doggy-cheetah friendships began

At the Cincinnati Zoo, it all started with Cathryn Hilker , a Mason, Ohio, native and founder of the zoo's Cat Ambassador Program. She has championed the species for decades.

Hilker raised ambassador cats in her home starting in the 80s. Angel, the zoo's first cheetah ambassador, became fast friends with Hilker's Great Dane, Dominic , which helped Hilker realize dogs could serve as companions for solo cheetah cubs growing up without their mothers.

Cheetahs reach maturity around age 2 or 3, which is when, in the wild, they would leave their families and set out on their own. Zoo cheetahs also get more independent around this age and spend less time with their companion dogs.

"It's kind of like when you share a room with your sibling growing up, you reach a certain point where you're like, 'I want my own space,'" Haugen said.

The furry friends are still able to hang out with each other when they want to and have "sleepovers" on occasion, Haugen said. When a dog fully retires from the Cat Ambassador Program, a zoo staff member adopts them. The program is currently at capacity, and wouldn't take on another dog without retiring one, Haugen said.

How are dog companions picked?

When scouting out a cheetah's new best friend, zoo keepers look for playful puppies of a similar age, and have adopted dogs from the Animal Rescue Fund shelter in Amelia, Ohio. The dog's breed isn't that important; it's all about personality. However, Labrador mixes have historically made a good match, Haugen said, because of the breed's good nature.

Cheetahs and domesticated dogs would likely never meet in the wild. But raised alongside each other at zoos, 24 hours a day when they're little, they form a bond and learn to communicate.

Cheetahs don't roar – they purr and meow. When The Enquirer team watched Rozi and Daisy play in the zoo's cheetah encounter, a growl from Rozi clearly meant: "This is my football." Cheetah cubs might also make a chirping sound to let keepers know they miss their companion dog, Haugen said.

"Cheetah siblings, that's what they'd be doing – they'd be running around, biting each other and playing," she explained. "That's what the dog serves as, that role for them. And they kind of each have their own relationship."

Those relationships have been well-documented. Remus, whose cheetah friend is Kris, was even featured on the 2020 Disney+ show, "It's A Dog's Life," which explored the many jobs of canines and was narrated by Bill Farmer, the voice of Goofy.

How do big cats become ambassadors?

Cheetahs in the Cat Ambassador Program were not able to be raised by their mothers, and are therefore raised by humans in zoos. In zoos and in the wild, a mother cheetah will often abandon a single-cub litter because it's less likely to survive into adulthood.

Single cubs like Rozi are hand-raised by zoo keepers, making them more comfortable with humans and prime candidates for ambassadorships.

The Cat Ambassador Program aims to educate people about big cats and inspire them to help save these creatures. Cat ambassadors run in the zoo's cheetah encounter, appear in classrooms and are trained to travel and walk on a leash.

As an ambassador, Rozi will live at the Cincinnati Zoo her whole life. She also likely won't breed, because the genetic diversity of ambassador cheetahs is already well-represented.

The Cincinnati Zoo is part of a nationwide cheetah breeding coalition, led by the Conservation Centers for Species Survival . According to the organization, cheetah births in North America have increased by 85% because of the program, which facilitates cheetah breeding across a network of zoos. As a result, the group of 350 cheetahs in the coalition has a greater genetic diversity than wild populations in Africa, Haugen said.

"It's kind of a safeguard for the cheetah population as a whole, because we're safeguarding these good genetics here in zoos in case things keep going poorly in Africa," she added.

How else do dogs help protect vulnerable species?

Poaching, human-animal conflict and habitat loss have made cheetahs a vulnerable species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The Cincinnati Zoo provides guard dogs to farmers in Namibia, home to the world's largest population of cheetahs. Dogs keep cheetahs away from livestock, which means they aren't killed by farmers.

The Cheetah Conservation Fund's trained scat detection dogs help researchers learn the genetic profile of cheetahs in the wild. Dogs' sense of smell is also used to stop smugglers because they can sniff out ivory , the white material that comes from the tusks of elephants and other animals.

How to see Rozi at the Cincinnati Zoo

Watch Rozi and other cheetahs run in the Kroger Cheetah Encounter , resuming for the summer season May 25. Cheetah encounters are free with zoo admission, and happen at 10:30 a.m. and noon Friday through Tuesday.

Chimps are dying of the common cold. Is great ape tourism to blame?

Viruses that cause mild sniffles in humans are devastating populations of chimpanzees and gorillas. In some ape communities, it’s a bigger killer than habitat loss or poaching

T here was something wrong with the chimpanzees. For weeks, a community of 205 animals in Uganda’s Kibale national park had been coughing, sneezing and looking generally miserable. But no one could say for sure what ailed them, even as the animals began to die.

Necropsies can help to identify a cause of death, but normally, the bodies of chimps are found long after decomposition has set in, if at all. So when Tony Goldberg, a US wildlife epidemiologist visiting Kibale, got word that an adult female named Stella had been found freshly dead, he knew this was a rare opportunity to look for an answer.

Goldberg and two Ugandan veterinary colleagues drove for two hours to a remote part of the park, then lugged their gear for another hour through the forested terrain to where Stella’s body lay. They lifted the 45kg animal on to a tarpaulin, and got to work. Crouching over the chimp – sweating beneath their full-body protective suits, their goggles fogging in the humid air – they meticulously worked through Stella’s organ systems, collecting samples. Not knowing what had killed her was “unnerving”, Goldberg recalls. “It could have been Ebola.”

As the necropsy progressed, however, Goldberg began to see telltale signs of a familiar disease: fluid buildup in Stella’s chest cavity and around her heart; lung tissue that was dark red, consolidated and marked with lesions. It looked like the chimp had died of severe pneumonia.

Months later, molecular testing revealed the culprit: human metapneumovirus (HMPV), one of a collection of viruses that presents in people as a common cold but is “a well-known killer” in our closest primate relatives, says Goldberg, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. More than 12% of the community that Stella belonged to died in the outbreak. Others were lost as a result of being orphaned. “Stella had a baby that was clinging to her body for a while after she died,” Goldberg says. “The baby subsequently died.”

This phenomenon of animals catching diseases from humans, called reverse zoonoses, affects species around the world – from mussels contaminated with hepatitis A virus to tuberculosis transmitted to Asian elephants. But because of their evolutionary closeness to humans, great apes tend to be most vulnerable.

For some great ape populations that live in protected areas, reverse zoonoses are an even bigger threat than habitat loss or poaching. In a group at Kibale , for example, respiratory pathogens such as human rhinovirus C and HMPV have been the leading chimp killers for more than 35 years, accounting for almost 59% of deaths from a known cause.

For conservationists, the phenomenon presents a thorny problem. In many places in Africa , people live in close proximity to great apes. Great ape tourism has also become a central pillar of these endangered species’ conservation: ensuring habitats are preserved and local people are incentivised to support wildlife. But the same industry that funds protection of many apes could also be helping to drive them towards extinction, as close proximity to humans can expose the animals to deadly pathogens.

Tourism is necessary for conservation, says Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, a wildlife veterinarian and founder of Conservation Through Public Health, a nonprofit group in Entebbe, Uganda. “But it needs to be done carefully, otherwise we won’t have these animals around.”

Some of the first records of reverse zoonoses in great apes were made by British primatologist Jane Goodall. In 1986, Goodall wrote that chimps “quite often” had colds and coughs, and “can contract the same contagious diseases as humans”. But conclusive evidence that chimps were being infected by people didn’t arrive until 2008, when Fabian Leendertz, the director of the Helmholtz Institute for One Health in Greifswald, Germany and his colleagues used molecular tools to show that human viruses were to blame for a decade’s worth of major respiratory disease outbreaks in chimps in Taï national park, Côte d’Ivoire.

Since the paper came out, habitat destruction, human encroachment, the climate crisis and globalisation have only accelerated, and all of Africa’s great ape species are now decreasing. Eastern and western gorillas are both critically endangered, while chimpanzees and bonobos are endangered. The fact that human diseases can take out significant proportions of great ape communities makes the pathogens a dire threat to all four species. “Great ape populations can’t afford these sorts of losses,” Goldberg says. “Their populations are already so small, fragmented and declining that they just don’t have the ability to rebound or adapt.”

Many of the pathogens cause infections that, in a person, would result in an annoying but mild cold. In great apes, however, these diseases can be deadly, because the animals have no immunity or evolved genetic resistance. Once a chimpanzee or gorilla becomes unwell, there is usually little that can be done to help. There are also no vaccines for most common cold viruses.

What could work, Goldberg realised, was a public-health approach: finding the source of pathogens and preventing them from getting into the populations in the first place.

In 2015, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released guidelines for great ape tourism, recommending that people stay at least 7 metres away from animals, tour groups limit their size, all visitors wear face masks and people who feel unwell be excluded.

But there are obvious reasons why that doesn’t always happen. For one, it relies on honesty from international visitors. “Imagine you’re an American tourist, you’ve gone all the way to Africa, and this is your bucket-list trip,” Goldberg says. “Now you’ve got a stomach ache – and you’re not going to go see the gorillas? Of course you are.”

Tourists often break rules while out in the field, either because of excitement in the moment or wilful disregard. “Some tourists just don’t listen,” says Kalema-Zikusoka. And local guides might or might not correct them. “They don’t want to be rude, and they find it hard to manage tourists.”

Guides may also refrain from reproaching visitors for fear of losing a potential tip. Some guides “get tips that are twice the monthly salary of typical villagers in the area”, Goldberg says. “There are all these perverse incentives.”

One 2020 study that analysed 282 YouTube videos of mountain gorilla tourism found that 40% depicted humans within arm’s reach of gorillas or engaging in physical contact with the animals.

In another 2020 study , Darcey Glasser, then a graduate student at Hunter College of the City University of New York, joined 101 chimp treks at Kibale. Glasser observed tourists coughing during 88% of excursions; sneezing in 65%; and urinating in 37%. “Everyone’s touching everything,” she says.

Glasser presented her findings to wildlife officials in Uganda, who responded encouragingly, she says, adding hand-sanitising stations at the start of trails. In general, however, officials tend to avoid imposing strict rules that they think may impact visitors’ experiences.

Great ape tourism is a key source of revenue for the 13 African countries where it occurs, Leendertz says, so reverse zoonosis is “not always an easy topic”. Officials at the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which oversees the country’s national parks and all tourism activity in them, did not respond to multiple interview requests.

Ecotourism represents one serious disease risk for great apes, but it cannot account for all cases of reverse zoonoses. Some great ape populations never see a tour group – Stella’s community among them – yet still experience deadly outbreaks of human pathogens.

As Goldberg thought about how to tackle this problem, he noticed a perplexing pattern in the list of human pathogens that typically afflict great apes: they’re the infections that, like clockwork, young children catch when they go back to school, and then bring home.

Great apes, it occurred to him, could be catching diseases from adults who go into the forest after catching pathogens from their children. The idea seemed even more plausible when Goldberg realised that adults infected with these “sniffle germs” often show no symptoms, even as they shed copious viral particles.

Goldberg secured a grant for new research, led by Taylor Weary, an epidemiologist who recently graduated from Goldberg’s lab, alongside Patrick Tusiime, health coordinator for the Kasiisi Project, a nonprofit group that supports primary schools around Kibale. They compared monthly nasal swabs from local schoolchildren, parents who worked in the forest, and faecal samples from the chimps.

The findings, which are now in review for publication, confirmed Goldberg’s original hypothesis. Every respiratory pathogen that has caused a chimp outbreak in Kibale was present in children living nearby. Then, during Uganda’s most stringent Covid-19 lockdown between March and September 2020, the researchers observed an “extraordinarily clear” drop in infections across the board, Goldberg says, suggesting that schools are indeed a major source of transmission.

The message, Goldberg says, was clear: “To save the chimps, we have to make kids healthier.”

One big takeaway from the findings was that the current model is inadequate to reduce the risk of reverse zoonoses in Kibale’s chimpanzees, and probably in great apes in Africa as a whole. It hinges on stopping symptomatic people from going into the forest, but infected adults are usually asymptomatic. Forbidding guides and trackers from working whenever their children are ill isn’t a solution, Goldberg says: kids “are sick all the time”.

Banning tourism also wouldn’t work. Parks depend on visitor fees to pay salaries, maintain local support for conservation and justify the cost of setting land aside for wildlife. “When I was growing up, the perception was that chimps are bad,” says Tusiime, who was born in a rural village near Kibale. “Now there’s a shift to a positive attitude towards chimpanzees because they bring in tourists, they bring in revenue.”

Focusing on making children living near great apes healthier, then, could be the best bet for keeping human diseases out of great ape populations. Programmes have already been launched to reduce transmission among local children, teaching handwashing and other hygiene measures.

Scientists also believe that enforcement of existing biosecurity rules could go a long way toward reducing transmission – but that will require focused commitment from African governments and tourism providers, says Cristina Gomes, a wildlife conservationist at Florida International University in Miami who helped launch a working group to identify new strategies. One idea is to entitle guides working with chimps to paid sick days – a luxury most do not have. Another suggestion is to certify companies that follow best practices, justifying a slightly higher fee for their services.

Common cold viruses cannot be eradicated, and people and great apes won’t be staying apart anytime soon. Goldberg says outbreaks of respiratory disease were documented in chimps in at least five locations throughout sub-Saharan Africa in 2023 alone.

The hope, however, is that these will become rarer as scientists, officials, rural residents and tourists gain a deeper understanding of the problem. “Behavioural change takes time, but if you’re committed, it eventually happens,” Tusiime says. “So we need to start now.”

2 giant pandas from China to arrive at San Diego Zoo under conservation partnership

The giant pandas are named Yun Chuan and Xin Bao.

A pair of giant pandas are set to travel from China to the San Diego Zoo this summer, marking the first time the Southern California wildlife facility will house giant pandas since 2019.

On Monday, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced that care team leaders recently traveled to meet the two giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their journey to San Diego.

"It was an honor to see Yun Chuan and Xin Bao in person and meet our conservation partners caring for them at the Wolong and Bifengxia Panda Bases," Dr. Megan Owen, vice president of conservation science at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, said in a press release .

Yun Chuan, a nearly five-year-old male panda, who is described as being "mild-mannered, gentle and lovable," has a deep connection with the San Diego Zoo, according to the alliance.

His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 and lived at the facility for 23 years.

"Yun Chuan's lineage has deep connections to the San Diego Zoo and we're excited by the prospect of caring for them," Owen said in the release.

Xin Bao is a nearly four-year-old female giant panda who was born at the Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base, according to the release, which notes she is a "gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears."

The exact date of the pandas' arrival at the San Diego Zoo has not been announced, but the alliance is looking forward to a prospective arrival this summer, according to the release.

"Our partnership over the decades has served as a powerful example of how, when we work together, we can achieve what was once thought to be impossible," Owen said in the release.

This bear was definitely not craving honey when she chased down and devoured an entire family of ducks in front of kids at the zoo last week.

Parents thought they were taking their kids to have some wholesome family fun at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, but instead, they got to learn way more about the circle of life than they anticipated.

In a viral TikTok with over 2 million views, a mama duck found herself in the wrong enclosure and was floating around a pond in one of the exhibits when Juniper, a 2-year-old brown bear, stalked the family of birds and then jumped into the pond.

She reached out and grabbed the first duckling and took a big bite. Then she cornered a second duckling and began to eat that one, too.

"Hey buddy, can you leave him alone?" said Rachelle, the woman who posted the TikTok, as the bear chased after another duckling that swam towards where she was recording. "Can we not?"

One of NYC’s best new pizzas is currently one of the hardest to snag in town — and the meticulous makers of the prized $28 pie, served up on designer dinnerware, wouldn’t have it any other way.

Only 15 of the rare, Naples-meets-NYC mashups are available, on just one night per week — Mondays — at Cucina Alba, a classy Italian eatery in Chelsea.

Cucina Alba in Chelsea has amassed overnight fame for doing 15 pizzas a week, all on Monday nights.

And despite the cost, demand for the fussed-over Neapolitan-style creation — miraculously boasting a crispy New York slice-style bottom — has been so high, guests need to get themselves to the W. 18th St. restaurant at the early opening time of 5 p.m.

Within the hour, typically, all of the dough is gone.

This past Monday, the final 12″ pie — one size pleases all, or all who get one — was ordered by a lucky table at 6:22 p.m.

Is this a shameless ploy to fill up the dining room on a traditionally quiet night?

Absolutely — not that fans of the weekly event, which began about a month ago, are concerned.

Customers are eating up the special Monday pizza night.

“I hope they make more pizzas, I’d come every Monday,” Jake Taub, a 27-year-old neighbor who first tried the pie last week, told The Post.

Taub and other folks from the neighborhood said they first heard about the off-menu deal through word of mouth and on social media .

“We talked about the idea of pizza and how fun it is to have something that you can’t always have,” chef Adam Leonti, bread baking whiz and author of home baking guide “The Flour Lab,” told The Post.

Chef Adam Leonti is enjoying success of doing 15 pizzas on Monday nights.

The restaurant, hoping to boost numbers, decided to toss the proverbial dough ball at the wall — it stuck.

“I would say the crowd has over doubled on Mondays,” Leonti said.

And what exactly makes this prized pizza stand out from the thousands of competitors in close proximity?

Leonti handmakes the pies himself on Monday nights.

Leonti wanted to evoke that classic, crispy crust old-school NYC pizzerias serving by the slice are known for.

He’s especially partial to Sal & Carmine’s on the Upper West Side — he told The Post the beloved Broadway staple served as inspiration to Cucina Alba’s latest addition.

Beyond that, everything is as modern as can be — the sourdough is ultra-hydrated and twice-baked, for a total of around 18 minutes.

Customers are infatuated by the pizza, its crunchiness, and texture.

This, Leonti explained, is to avoid the inevitable result when trying to eat most gourmet pizzas — cheese and sauce sliding right off of a soggy pie.

“It’s amazing … it’s very crispy but can be soft at the same time,” Taub said.

Atop the sauce and Leonti’s sourdough crust — his favorite recipe for over 15 years — is a blend of three different mozzarella cheeses and fresh, raw tomato chunks.

Fellow pizza first-timer Graysen Airth, 24, of Chelsea, was particularly fond of the tomatoes for their texture. “They make it great,” the enthused customer told The Post.

The pizza also has a blend of herbs and spices that give a kick similar to the flavor of hot soppressata.

Why only a few pizzas per night?

And while the restaurant has managed to draw attention to its Monday night offering, it’s unlikely they’ll be making many more of the six-slice pizzas anytime soon.

There’s a simple explanation for this.

Down a hallway behind Cucina Alba’s main kitchen, Leonti can be seen making the pies himself — the dough alone takes up to three days to prep — and throwing them into the restaurant’s Castelli Roman ovens , before moving on to other duties.

Leonti uses special, Castelli made pizza ovens from Rome for the pies.

“If you did this in a pizzeria it would take all night,” joked Leonti, who lived and trained in Bergamo, Italy, for a year and a half.

“In New York, luxury is everywhere — I think it is interesting for luxury to be something that’s not expensive … we’re not trying to do a $50 pizza here ,” he assured.

However, a glimpse of upper-crust high life is presented beneath the standard-priced pie, which is served on black and gold, authentic Versace platters, imported from the old country. They retail for about $500 .

The pizza comes served on authentic Versace plateware.

“Pizza is kind of the dish of Naples , right? So why not serve Versace with their food,” Leonti said with a smile.

“Everybody always has the same reaction [to the servingware], thinking it’s not real. Like, ‘oh, you made that, right?'” Leonti revealed.

And, while maintaining that air of exclusivity, “we try to be as democratic as possible,” Leonti added.

Crowds have grown on Monday nights at Cucina Alba because of the pizza.

Alba even goes to great lengths to aid patrons who miss the narrow pie window by helping them nab a reservation for the next week.

Sometimes they make a note that a customer tried to come for a pie previously.

For his next chef’s hat trick, Leonti plans to turn Sunday into dessert day, making it the one day a week customers can enjoy a lavish dessert cart, paying homage to mouth-watering Italian pastries like sfogliatelle and many other goodies.

But for now, Mondays are bringing a whole week’s worth of buzz.

“We just made another reservation for next Monday at 5 p.m.,” diner Alysha Kamat told The Post, after her first time having the pizza.
