What students say

We've crunched the numbers to see if overall student satisfaction here is high, medium or low compared to students studying this subject(s) at other universities.

How do students rate their degree experience?

The stats below relate to the general subject area/s at this university, not this specific course. We show this where there isn’t enough data about the course, or where this is the most detailed info available to us.

Teaching and learning

Assessment and feedback, resources and organisation, student voice, who studies this subject and how do they get on, most popular a-levels studied (and grade achieved), after graduation.

The stats in this section relate to the general subject area/s at this university – not this specific course. We show this where there isn't enough data about the course, or where this is the most detailed info available to us.

What are graduates doing after six months?

This is what graduates told us they were doing (and earning), shortly after completing their course. We've crunched the numbers to show you if these immediate prospects are high, medium or low, compared to those studying this subject/s at other universities.

Top job areas of graduates

Although there aren't a lot of jobs around for professional philosophers, philosophy degrees are a relatively popular option, with more than 2,000 students graduating in a philosophy-related subject in 2015 - a little down on previous years, but still healthy. Nearly a quarter of philosophy graduates take a postgraduate qualification, and it's a relatively common subject at both Masters and doctorate level — so if you think academic life might be for you, think ahead about how you might fund further study. For those who go into work, philosophy grads tend to go into teaching, accountancy, consulting, journalism, PR, housing, marketing, human resources and the arts while a few go into the computer industry every year, where their logical training is highly rated.

What about your long term prospects?

Looking further ahead, below is a rough guide for what graduates went on to earn.

The graph shows median earnings of graduates who achieved a degree in this subject area one, three and five years after graduating from here.

Note: this data only looks at employees (and not those who are self-employed or also studying) and covers a broad sample of graduates and the various paths they've taken, which might not always be a direct result of their degree.

This is the percentage of applicants to this course who received an offer last year, through Ucas.

This is what the university has told Ucas about the course. Use it to get a quick idea about what makes it unique compared to similar courses, elsewhere.

Course location and department:

Teaching excellence framework (tef):.

We've received this information from the Department for Education, via Ucas. This is how the university as a whole has been rated for its quality of teaching: gold silver or bronze. Note, not all universities have taken part in the TEF.

This information comes from the National Student Survey, an annual student survey of final-year students. You can use this to see how satisfied students studying this subject area at this university, are (not the individual course).

This is the percentage of final-year students at this university who were "definitely" or "mostly" satisfied with their course. We've analysed this figure against other universities so you can see whether this is high, medium or low.

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

Graduate field commentary:

The Higher Education Careers Services Unit have provided some further context for all graduates in this subject area, including details that numbers alone might not show

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?

The Uni Guide and The Student Room are both part of The Student Room Group.

Dr. Katharine Jenkins

I am a philosopher at the University of Glasgow, specializing in social philosophy. I joined the department as a Lecturer in July 2020 and was promoted to Reader in 2022. Before that, I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham and a Junior Research Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge. I hold a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Sheffield, and a BA and MPhil in Philosophy from the University of Cambridge.

When I’m not doing philosophy (and sometimes when I am) I enjoy walking, meditation, making clothes, and playing board games. I grew up in the Lake District and I think I'll always miss the fells, but I’m having a great time exploring the Scottish hills and mountains.

My Research

My research is primarily in social philosophy, especially the ontology of social categories. I'm interested in how social categories such as races and genders exist, and how these categories are bound up with systematic injustices. I'm also interested in feminist philosophy and critical philosophy of race more broadly, and in the philosophy of sex and sexuality.

university of glasgow phd philosophy

My monograph, Ontology and Oppression: Race, Gender, and Social Reality, is published by Oxford University Press. It examines the nature of social categories that are bound up with oppression, such as gender and race, and the ways in which emancipatory social movements can best respond to such categories in view of the important role they play in many people’s identities. In it, I argue that the very fact of being socially constructed as a member of a certain social group, such as the group women, can be wrongful, and, indeed, oppressive. However, I also show that identities based on these social group memberships can still be valuable. You can read more, and get the book, here

All of my research publications can be found on PhilPapers, a free online database of philosophical works. Topics I have written about include gender identity, rape myths, pornography, racial categories, and the category of disability. If you have any difficulty accessing something you want to read, please feel welcome to email me

Public Engagement

I believe that philosophy has great potential to facilitate positive social change, and I enjoy using my research to work with organisations and the public. I have acted as a consultant for several organisations on issues including sexual violence prevention, gender equality and inclusion, and trans rights.

If you think that I could be of use to your organisation, please get in touch.

Here are some of the things I have produced for a public audience:

The Gender Recognition Act: A trans-inclusive feminist approach (PDF download)

Partnership: The Consent Coalition

From 2017-2020, I helped to found The Consent Coalition, a group of organisations within Nottinghamshire who are working together to raise awareness of the importance of consent and banish myths about rape and sexual violence.

  • Symptom science
  • Laboratory sciences
  • Health promotion and disease management across the lifespan
  • Policy analysis and advancement of cost-effective health care systems
  • Health equity
  • Innovative methodologies

Hear from #HuskyNurse Sarah McKiddy and her experience with the PhD program.

A Community of Scholars

We welcome applicants with a baccalaureate degree in any field. We encourage post-baccalaureate students, as well as most master’s and DNP students who are ready to begin intensive study of nursing science, to apply.

UW PhD students have a wide range of academic backgrounds, including:

university of glasgow phd philosophy

  • Public health
  • Complementary and alternative medicine
  • Healthcare systems and policy
  • Music therapy

Our PhD program is highly individualized to create independent thinkers with demonstrated ability to articulate, investigate, and report on original research that substantially contributes to health care knowledge.

The flexible program reflects the enormous scope and impact of the latest nursing research and policymaking. Although the PhD curriculum can be completed in three years of full-time study, individual student program lengths are expected to vary.

Once offered admission as a PhD student, you are matched with a faculty adviser. Your adviser provides guidance and helps answer questions until you select a supervisory committee chair (between years one and three). Your chair then serves in an advisory capacity and as the supervisor for your dissertation.

View the PhD Sample Curriculum Grid PhD Required and Elective Courses

  • Optional: Statistics Concentration

The first year of the full-time PhD program and the first two years of part-time focus on required core courses emphasizing nursing philosophy, conceptual frameworks, theory, and research methodologies.

In addition, students complete their statistics sequence and may take selected electives or engage in research or teaching practicum. Students complete the preliminary exam at the end of the first year of full-time study and the end of two years of part-time study.

Students who enter the PhD program with a BSN can earn an MS in Nursing Science during the program following successful completion of the first year of the PhD program and the preliminary examination.

After the first year of full-time study and the first two years of part-time study, courses and other scholarly activities are determined by you and your supervisory committee to comprise your individual program of study. The supervisory chair is a School of Nursing graduate faculty member whose research approach, interest, or research methods align with your proposed dissertation project.

You and your chair complete the supervisory committee by selecting faculty members from the School of Nursing, the UW at large, and other appropriate experts outside the University. This committee approves your program of study and guides you through the general examinations, dissertation research, and final defense.

The Nursing Science Statistics Area of Concentration requires a minimum of 14 credits of advanced statistical methods coursework above and beyond the 10 credits of statistics required for the PhD degree. Of these, two credits are fulfilled by the CSSS Seminar, and a minimum of 12 credits are fulfilled by at least four advanced statistics courses, three of which must come from the list of CSSS courses approved for the concentration.

All courses taken as part of the statistics concentration must be graded.

However, a 500-level course that is graded credit/no credit may be considered for inclusion in your Area of Concentration proposal if:

  • In the course, you submit an individual project (i.e., not a group project); and
  • Major course assignments are submitted to your Supervisory Committee for review

CSSS seminar: minimum two credits

A minimum of two quarters in CS&SS is required. The most up-to-date course descriptions for statistics course options can be found on the CSSS website .

Information Science Ph.D. Program

Doctor of philosophy degree.

The Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D.  is a research degree. It is awarded in recognition of original scholarship and the generation of new knowledge by immersion in a topic, analysis, synthesis and creativity. When a Ph.D. is awarded, the degree carries and bestows certain rights and responsibilities that relate in large measures to serving society by exploring, shedding light upon, and resolving fundamental problems.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is said to be fundamentally interdisciplinary. All those who pursue the degree, in one sense or another, seek to clarify some portion of our best possible image of the world. Each of those who pursue the Ph.D. seek to provide the most robust understanding and appropriate tools for enabling each member of society to live well, to make the best life decisions—to become most fully human. Doctoral pursuits follow many paths, use different toolsets, invoke different mindsets, and continue testing assumptions by different means. Over the centuries, many of these paths have clustered into discrete departments or schools. An interdisciplinary program attempts to return to an era of broader assumptions, linking paths and cross-fertilizing research. Such an approach provides resources across boundaries.

Each discipline has its foundational notions of what constitutes doctoral studies. Likewise, each institution sets administrative guidelines and constraints for doctoral studies. The goal is to ensure that society is provided with the most capable people and that each person pursuing doctoral studies has every opportunity and resource to flourish.

The University of North Texas Information Science Ph.D. Program, responds to the varied and changing needs of an information age, increasing recognition of the central role of information and information technologies in individual, social, economic, and cultural affairs. Graduates of the program are prepared to contribute to the advancement and evolution of the information society in a variety of roles and settings as administrators, researchers, and educators

Graduate Apprenticeship Engineering (Design and Manufacture)

Become a qualified engineer specialising in either Computer Aided Engineering, Control and Instrumentation or Electrical Power Engineering Design. Enjoy being hands-on with technology, creating solutions and solving problems at degree level.

As a working professional, enhance your qualifications and knowledge and support your career growth to become an engineer.

Current trends towards multidisciplinary working in engineering firms drives a need for engineers to become ‘technically fluent’ in a broader range of areas, manage technological convergence, collaborate and problem-solving skills. The purpose of the Graduate Apprenticeship BEng (Hons) Engineering (Design and Manufacture) course is to produce graduates with the skills and knowledge to become professional engineers capable of working in various engineering environments. You will specialise in one of the following streams: computer-aided engineering, control and instrumentation or electrical power engineering design.

This specialist approach allows you and employers to choose a stream with best fit for your workplace. The Engineering (Design and Manufacture) Graduate Apprenticeship is co-designed with employers to ensure it meets contemporary industry needs. The School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment has more than 30 years’ experience in delivering engineering education to employees on a day release basis.

If you are reading this as in employer, Graduate Apprenticeships may be used for the dual purposes of workforce development (early career) as well as up-skilling and reskilling needs of more experienced middle and senior employees seeking to catch up on academic and professional qualifications.

All Apprenticeships are fully-funded by the Scottish Funding Council. Applicants will also need to complete a SAAS Graduate Apprenticeship application form . The course team will review skills, knowledge, academic qualifications and experience of all applicants, which will all be used to inform the level of the apprenticeship candidates will begin their education.

Overview of Postgraduate Study In Philosophy

The Philosophy Subject of the University of Glasgow is committed to maintaining the highest standards of research excellence and an active postgraduate community. There are approximately fifty postgraduate students studying for one of our research or taught postgraduate degrees. The Subject is open and friendly, and staff are freely accessible and supportive. Postgraduate students are encouraged to exchange ideas informally amongst themselves and also with staff. They are encouraged to attend weekly talks by visiting speakers, the Philosophy, Psychology and neuroscience seminars, and workshops and conferences organised within the department. Moreover, they are expected to attend a weekly postgraduate seminarat which postgraduate students give presentations of their work.

  • MSc in Philosophy : a one year taught masters degree for those with an undergraduate degree in analytic philosophy
  • MSc in Philosophy of Mind and Psychology : an interdisciplinary degree taught jointly by Philosophy Psychology, with close links to the CSPE
  • MLitt in Philosophy (conversion programme): a one year taught masters degree for those whose undergraduate degree did not include a substantial component devoted to philosophy as practised in the analytic tradition
  • MPhil - a one year research degree
  • MLitt (research) - a two year research degree
  • PhD - three year research degree (five years part-time)
  • PhD in Philosophy and Psychology - three year research degree (five years part-time)

These degrees can also be taken part-time. After completing an undergraduate degree the standard route is to take a taught MSc (Masters) degree and then a PhD. Entry requirements for the MLitt in Philosophy (conversion programme) include an honours degree at upper second class (2:1) level (or equivalent) in any subject. For the MSc in Philosophy we require an honours degree in philosophy at upper second class (2:1) level (or equivalent) in analytic philosophy. For the MSc in Philosophy of Mind and Psychology we require an honours degree in a relevant subject at upper second class (2:1) level (or equivalent). Entry onto the PhD requires, in addition, good results at the taught master's level.

Our department's teaching and research covers a broad area of analytic philosophy. In particular, we have research strengths in:

  • Dr David Bain
  • Dr Derek Brown
  • Dr Jennifer Corns
  • Dr Stephan Leuenberger
