How do I write a BSc thesis?

Session 1 : Introduction

How do I write a BSc Thesis?

A bsc thesis….

A bachelor thesis demonstrates your ability to advance scientific knowledge while obeying ethical principles of scientific conduct. Specific steps typically include

– developing a research question;

– conducting a systematic literature search;

– summarising extant theories and/or empirical results;

– collecting and analysing data;

– reporting procedures and results appropriately (i.e., using APA guidelines).

You can find a number of example bachelor theses on ADAM .

Formulating a Research Question

One of the first challenges in writing a BSc thesis is to identify a gap in the existing research and, from there, formulate a research question that can be answered with a synthesis or other empirical approaches.

What is a research gap? A research gap is a question or a topic that research in a field has not yet answered or explored extensively (i.e. a scientific idea, a concept, a specific study population, or a comparison of opposing scientific opinions) Identifying one can be difficult. Here are some helpful steps:

bsc thesis pdf

BSc/MSc Thesis

Our research group offers various interesting topics for a BSc or MSc thesis, the latter both in Computer Science and Scientific Computing . These topics are typically closely related to ongoing research projects (see our Research Page and Publications ). Below, we outline the basic procedure you should follow when planning to do a thesis in our group. Please read the following carefully! You also might want to take a quick look at past topics students covered in their theses. Please also note that we currently cannot accommodate all requests for advising a thesis as in current semester  as well as in the upcoming summer semester 2024 we are already advising numerous MSc and BSc theses.

Requirements

A key requirement is that you have taken some advanced courses offered by our group. This includes Data Science for Text Analytics  or  Complex Network Analysis (ICNA) and the more recent master level class on Natural Language Processing with Transformers  (INLPT). Student should also have some background in machine learning, ideally in combination with NLP. We also strongly recommend that prior to starting a thesis (especially a BSc thesis) in our group, you do an advanced software practical to become familiar with the data and tools we use in many of our projects. Most students typically do this in the semester before they officially start their thesis. Further requirements include

  • very good programming experience with Python (strongly preferred, including framework like pandas and numpy)
  • solid background in statistics and linear algebra
  • (optionally) experience with the machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch
  • (optionally) experience with NLP frameworks such as spaCy, gensim, LangChain
  • (optionally) experience with Opensearch or Elasticsearch
  • knowledge using tools such as Github and Docker

It is also advantageous if you have taken some graduate courses in the areas of efficient algorithms (e.g., IEA1 ) and in particular machine learning (e.g., IML , IFML or IAI ). Being familiar with frameworks like scikit-learn , Keras or PyTorch is advantageous.

If you have only taken the undergraduate course introduction to databases (IDB) and none of the other above courses, it is unlikely that we can accommodate your request.

Make also sure that you are familiar with the examination regulations ("Prüfungsordnung") that apply to your program of study.

Getting in Contact

Prior to getting in contact with us you should, of course, read this page in its entirety. If you think your interests and expertise are a good fit for our group and research activities, send an email to Prof. Michael Gertz with the subject "Anfrage BSc Arbeit" or "Anfrage MSc Arbeit" and include the following information:

  • your current transcript (as PDF). You can download this from the LSF .
  • information about your field of application ("Anwendungsfach"), in particular the courses you have taken
  • your programming experience and projects you worked on
  • areas of interest based on the research conducted in our group
  • any other information you think might strengthen your request

We will then review this information and get back to you with the scheduling of an appointment in person to discuss further details.

Thesis Expose

Once we agree on a topic for your thesis, before you officially register for a thesis, we would like to get an idea of how you approach scientific research and whether you are able to do scientific writing. For this, we require that you write an expose of your planned thesis research (see, e.g., here or here ) . This document is about 4-6 pages and has to include a description of

  • the context of your project and research
  • problem statement(s)
  • objectives and planned approaches
  • related work
  • milestones towards a timely completion of the thesis

Especially for the related work, it is important that you get a good overview  early on in your thesis project; of course, your advisor will give you some starting points. Most of the time, such an expose becomes an integral part of the introductory chapter of your thesis, so there is no time and effort wasted. The expose needs to be submitted to your advisor on schedule (which you arrange with your advisor), who will then discuss the expose with you and coordinate the next steps. Occasionally we also have students give a 10-15 minute presentation of their research plan in front of the members of our group in order to get further ideas, comments, suggestions, and pointers on their thesis.

Official Registration

In agreement with your advisor, after you have submitted an expose of good quality, you plan for an official start date of the thesis. For this, please fill out the  form suitable for your program of study:

  • Für Anmeldung einer Bachelorarbeit, siehe hier .
  • For officially registering your master's thesis, see here .
  • Registration form for a MSc thesis in Scientific Computing (please see Mrs. Kiesel to obtain a form).

Hand in this form to Prof. Michael Gertz who will then turn in the signed form.

Mango, a fruit native to India, is one of the most important fruit crops world-wide. The mango is a vascular, seed and flowering plant. It bears the botanical name as - Mangifera indica L.. It is economically the most important fruit crop in the Anacardiaceae (Cashew or poison ivy) Family. It is ironic that two of the most delectable nuts (cashew, pistachio) and one (mango) of the world’s major fruit crops come from this family. The Genus of the mango is Mangifera which is divided into 5 lower divisions (Species) including the Species of the mango - Mangifera indica. The mango tree has evergreen arbors with10-40 m height with a crown of radius 10 m; grayish-brown bark, brown branchlets, crowded leaves. The seedling tree is long-lived with some specimens known to be over 300 years old and still fruiting; grafted tree lives only 80 years or less. The mango bark is usually dark grey-brown to black, rather smooth, superficially cracked or fissured inconspicuously, peeling off in irregul...

Agriculture Journal IJOEAR

The mango (Mangifera indica L.) makes up a significant horticultural blessing of India. No other fruit has such a conspicuous register in written works, verses, mythical tradition, chronicles, painting and statuesque as that of mango. The colloquial name of mango is ‘aam’ which implies ‘the common’. It is not only typical throughout India; but is also the fruit of the ordinary folk people. Attributable to its nutritive advantage mango has pandemic solicitation and promptly called the ‘king of fruit’. Moreover, ripe fruit is revitalizing, energizing, fattening, diuretic and laxative. Each and every portion is promising, rewarding and propitious and has been employed in folk remedies in some procedure or another. Besides gobbled as dessert as well as green, mango can be cured by processing into different products in domicile and folk industry. Like Ayurveda, folk medicine also gives equal importance to preventives as well as curative measures but folk prescriptions are covered in the name of rituals and rites and some other cultural behaviour. Gangetic West Bengal is rich in mango-lore and the folk people have valuable wisdom relating to mango and they undertake their own experimentation in their own ways either in the orchards (for ITKs), or in the kitchens (for folk foods) or in the dispensaries (for folk medicines) and in the mind-land (for folk literature). Therefore, it was worthwhile to conduct a survey in the perspective of mango-lore of the Gangetic West Bengal for collecting and documenting the riches of folklore by participatory rural folk appraisal. The present study is based on intensive surveys carried out over a period of 4 years starting from the year 2007 with a detailed account of the folk diversities, folk knowledge and cultural tradition pertaining to mango cultivation and industry in Bengal. Mango-lore, the aggregate of cultural tradition delineating mango, is originated from the beliefs, culture and customs of folk people and it covers the tradition based cultural expressions exemplified by non-material folklore (viz. riddles, proverbs, sayings, folk tales, folk songs etc.) and material folklore (viz. folk foods, folk medicines, folk implements, folk varieties etc.). In the folk songs and dramas of Bengal, the diversities in mango are mentioned. Less than 5 per cent mango area of Bengal is under the cultivation of these diversities. Though it is now a common practice that orchardist-folk sells their orchards to the merchant-folk for a specific period of time, the so called folk germplasm are kept for their own consumption. Though the industrial-orchardist, now-a-days, have least interest in those folk varieties and more frequently than not they avail the opportunity of felling those, the ambitious scientists and institutions are now looking forward to have right to hold the genetic resources of the folk germplasm of mango. But as folk wisdom as well as folk variety of mango is the wealth of a folk, any individual does not claim the credit and these are closely related to culture and heritage of folk people in confined locations. Social scientists should be alert regarding this folk-intellection in plant improvement of mango.

Mango (Mangifera indica) is a tropical fruit renowned for its delightful taste and distinct aroma. This comprehensive review aims to explore the botanical aspects, nutritional value, health benefits, and economic significance of the mango fruit. The botanical aspects of mango encompass its classification, origin, morphology, and cultivation practices. Mango belongs to the Anacardiaceae family and is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia. The fruit's diverse cultivars exhibit variations in size, shape, color, and flavor, making mango a versatile and widely consumed fruit worldwide. Regarding nutritional value, mango is a rich source of essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. It is particularly abundant in vitamins A and C, which contribute to the fruit's immune-boosting and antioxidant properties. Additionally, mango contains dietary fiber, aiding digestion, and various minerals like potassium and magnesium, which promote cardiovascular health. The health benefits associated with mango consumption are vast and encompass different aspects of human health. Mango's antioxidant compounds help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and age-related macular degeneration. Furthermore, the fruit's fiber content aids in weight management, promotes gastrointestinal health, and helps regulate blood sugar levels. In addition to its nutritional and health benefits, mango holds significant economic importance globally. It serves as a valuable export commodity, contributing to the agricultural economies of mango-producing regions. The fruit's popularity in the global market fuels trade, job creation, and economic growth in many countries To sum up, this comprehensive review highlights the botanical aspects, nutritional value, health benefits, and economic significance of the mango fruit. Understanding these aspects is crucial for appreciating the immense value that mango offers as a versatile and nutritious fruit, both for individual well-being and economic development. Further research and promotion of mango's potential could lead to enhanced cultivation techniques, product development, and utilization, benefiting both consumers and mango-producing communities alike.

Thesis is the creative elaboration of a professional task (scientific, engineering, design, development, research or research development) in written form as defined in the requirements of the training program. By solving the task the student relies on his/her studies using national and international literature under the guidance of an internal and external supervisor. By preparing and defending thesis students who complete the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program prove that they are capable of the practical applications of the acquired skills, summarizing the work done and its results in a professional way, creatively solving the tasks related to the topic and doing individual professional work.

Step-by-step guide to writing thesis

  • Registering for the course MFZDG31G15-EN/MFZDG31G413-EN or MK3SZDGG15G117-EN/MK3SZDGG15G317-EN "Thesis"

If you know which topic you would like to choose or which field of mechanical engineering you are interested in, you should contact an instructor from the Faculty whom you would like as your supervisor. Possible thesis topics here . If he/she accepts your topic, you can register for his/her "Thesis" course at the beginning of the semester via the NEPTUN system. You can sign up for the course usually through the Department or the International Office (Faculty of Engineering).

  • Thesis Sheet

The Thesis Sheet is prepared by the Department and must be bound into the thesis. You are kindly requested to print out this final version and have it bound into thesis. The Department will arrange for the signature of the Head of Department.

The Thesis Sheet includes the following data:

  • name of the student, name of the specialization, full-time training
  • title of the thesis,
  • tasks to be elaborated (generally the same as the chapters of the thesis) in imperative form (Please present...!, Please make...!),
  • name of the internal tutor (supervisor),
  • name of the external tutor, name of the company,
  • two selected subjects of the state exam (see: Important information on state exam).
  • Regular consultation with the supervisor (certified on the Consultation Sheet)

During the semester you will have two guiders, one instructor from the Faculty and one external supervisor. The external supervisor (referee) is usually an expert from a company where you can do for example additional research work or measurements according to your topic.

During the semester students have to give account of the current state of the thesis to the internal tutor at least three times , which is certified on the Consultation Sheet. The Consultation Sheet is made out and managed by the supervisor . Thesis can be submitted at the end of the semester after the supervisor's approval on the Consultation Sheet. The grade earned for the "Thesis" course is not identical with the grade received for the final evaluation of thesis. However, submitting thesis (as outlined below) is one of the requirements of taking the state exam.

  • Submitting thesis

Formal Thesis Requirements (minimum number of pages, font style and size, requirements regarding the content, etc.) may be downloaded here .
