Study Ph.D. in South Korea: Requirements and Application Process

South Korea offers numerous benefits for international students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or doctorate program in the country. Specifically, doctoral students may benefit from excellent research and academic opportunities, which are made possible thanks to the country’s world-class research and academic institutions .

Additionally, doctorate students may be offered various funding and scholarship opportunities . They are also exposed to a dynamic and vibrant cultural and academic environment, novel to most foreigners. So, if you’re interested in all of that, read this article. It aims to provide international students interested in studying a Ph.D. program in South Korea with a general overview of the application process and possible enrollment requirements.

Ph.D. Degree Admission Requirements

Applying for a doctoral degree in South Korea requires the participants to provide certain requirements to showcase their academic and professional abilities. The requirements include materials like proof of academic qualifications, a curriculum vitae or resume, a research proposal, etc.

1. Proof of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree

Evidence of completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program from an accredited institution must be provided to demonstrate that the applicant has the necessary educational background.

2. Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume

A resume or a CV is a document that summarizes your academic qualifications, research experience, publications, work history, as well as other relevant achievements. It will assist the admissions committee in assessing your professional and academic background.

3. Research Proposal

A research proposal is provided to assist the university in analyzing the feasibility and relevance of your research. Your research proposal should include a clear and well-defined research topic, objectives, intended research methodology, and expected study outcomes.

4. Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation , usually written by supervisors, mentors, and professors, attest your research skills, academic abilities, and potential to succeed in your doctoral program. These letters may showcase your potential contributions to academics, work ethic, and character.

5. English Language Proficiency

With English being the language of instruction in most Ph.D. programs, applicants for a Ph.D. in South Korea may be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Typically, they do so using standardized language tests like the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) .

These tests analyze your ability to communicate and understand English effectively. Applicants must meet minimum score requirements to ensure they can engage in discussions, coursework, and academic research.

It is important to note that application requirements to study a PhD program in South Korea may vary according to program and university. It is advised that you visit the official websites of universities offering Ph.D. programs for accurate details. For example, institutions like Yonsei University and Seoul National University offer detailed information on their application procedures and admissions requirements.

Language Proficiency Tests Needed for Doctoral Studies

Often, Ph.D. applicants in South Korea will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the Korean language. A very commonly used Korean language proficiency test is the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) , which assesses writing, listening, reading, and speaking skills in Korean. Typically, a minimum level of 3 or 4 is expected; however, the actual baseline score may vary depending on the program and university.

Universities in South Korea offer English-taught programs to accommodate non-Koreans. Thus, applicants may be required to demonstrate proficiency in English instead or in addition to Korean proficiency. Additionally, South Korean universities may also offer programs in other languages like Chinese , German , Spanish , French , or Russian. These programs typically cater to students fluent in these languages. An example is Hankuk University of Foreign Studies , which offers programs in several languages other than Korean and English.

Ph.D. Degree Application Process

All Ph.D. applicants in South Korea must go through several steps for admission:

Step 1. Submit the Application Form

The online application form must be filled and submitted alongside the required documents, like letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, academic transcripts, and research proposal.

Seoul National University , for instance, provides a detailed application process for its postgraduate programs. Accordingly, applicants are required to create an application account, and fill out and submit the online application form together with the necessary documents through that account.

Step 2. Take the Entrance Exam

Entrance exams may be required by some universities to evaluate the academic abilities and potential for success of applicants. This would usually involve language proficiency tests, tests based on specific subjects, or interviews. Korea University , for instance, requires all graduate applicants to submit language proficiency test results.

Step 3. Attend an Interview

Interviews may be a part of the admissions process in some institutions. They allow the university to analyze the motivation, research interests, and potential for academic success of applicants.

For instance, the admissions process for doctoral programs at Ewha Womans University involves an interview that is conducted either in-person or via video conference, depending on the situation.

Step 4. Wait for the Admissions Decision

Following the application procedure , entrance exam, and interview, the final decision will be made by the admissions committee after reviewing each application. Applicants will then be notified through an email or an official letter. Instructions on enrollment will be provided to successful applicants.

You must note that the actual application requirements and steps for a Ph.D. program in South Korea will depend on the institution and program. Therefore, interested applicants must visit official university websites for up-to-date information.

FAQs: Ph.D. Application Process in South Korea

Is it expensive to study ph.d. in south korea.

International students may find it relatively affordable to study for a Ph.D. in South Korea compared to most other countries. Even though tuition fees vary depending on the program and institution, they are typically lower compared to universities in Europe or the US.

For instance, one of South Korea’s top universities, the Seoul National University, offers Ph.D. programs with tuition fees ranging from 3,200,000 KRW to 6,000,000 KRW per semester for international students. Another popular university, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) , offers graduate programs with a tuition cost of 19,100,000 KRW per semester.

To become an international student studying for a Ph.D. in South Korea, you will be required to complete the application procedure, potentially sit for an entrance examination, or attend an interview. The final application process and enrollment requirements will depend on your university. It is therefore important to refer to university websites for up-to-date information.

More and more students are choosing to study in South Korea, and the country has recently seen dramatic increases in international enrolments. The government announced a plan to increase international enrolments to 200,000 by 2032 and is working hard to encourage even more students from the US, Europe and Asia to study abroad in South Korea. If you’re considering studying in South Korea, these are the best universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.

The government hopes to entice even more young people to study abroad in South Korea by offering a range of financial incentives to institutions and individuals, streamlining student visa applications and providing employment support for those who have studied in South Korea and wish to stay on and work.

Korean History, Literature, Religions, & Cultural Studies

The Korean studies program at Columbia is one of the premier Korean studies programs in the English-speaking world, and offers specializations in Korean History and Korean Literature. Jungwon Kim in pre-modern and early modern Korean cultural history, Theodore Hughes in modern Korean literature and visual culture, and Seong Uk Kim in Korean religions offer a very broad temporal range and rich variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives.

Columbia’s Starr East Asian Library houses one of the largest collections of Korean materials in North America. The Center for Korean Research at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute plays a leading role in the study of Korea within Columbia University, the New York City area, and beyond. By sponsoring public lectures, conferences, workshops, and cultural events such as movies and concerts on Korea-related topics, the CKR works to advance academic knowledge and a greater public awareness of Korea. The CKR also serves as a bridge between Korean Studies in North America and the most recent work of the Korean academic world through its sponsorship of visiting scholars and active partnerships with universities and institutions in Korea.

Our Korean language program is one of the best in North America. We teach first through fifth-year Korean, including a seminar on mixed script designed especially for Korean studies graduate students. Along with Columbia’s nationally leading Chinese and Japanese language programs, the Korean language program in EALAC is a key component of one the top East Asian language programs in North America.

We emphasize an interdisciplinary, transnational approach to Korean studies. Students thus work with a range of faculty at Columbia. In EALAC, we have great depth on the Japan side, with Carol Gluck, Paul Kreitman, Gregory Pflugfelder, and David Lurie in history, Tomi Suzuki, and Haruo Shirane in literature, and Paul Anderer in Japanese film and visual culture. Our strong Chinese studies program features Madeleine Zelin in modern economic and institutional history, Eugenia Lean in modern cultural history, Dorothy Ko in Ming-Qing cultural history and material history, and Li Feng in early history and archaeology We are just as rich in Chinese literature, with Lydia Liu in modern literature and theory and Shang Wei in Ming-Qing fiction and drama. We have the leading faculty in East Asian religion in this country with Bernard Faure, Max Moerman, and Michael Como in Japanese religions.

Columbia’s location in New York City, home to the second-largest Korean-American community in the United States, provides students with a wealth of Korea-related academic and cultural activities. Students can take advantage of Korea-related talks, film screenings, exhibitions, and other activities at The Korea Society, Asia Society, Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and New York Public Library.

Students in the PhD program at Columbia engage in cutting-edge research on a wide array of topics. Please see the list of recent graduates and their dissertation topics as well as the current PhD student profiles. The PhD program provides full funding (covering both tuition and stipend) for five years. The Korean studies MA program has a very strong record of placing its graduates in PhD programs of high quality or in non-academic jobs related to East Asia; it is a good beginning to either an academic or a professional career. Please contact Korean studies faculty by email to learn more about the PhD and MA programs.

PhD position at the Faculty of Life- and Environmental Sciences

Job information, offer description.

A full time PhD student position within the Faculty of Life- and Environmental Sciences at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland is open for applications. A challenging and creative project in a mixed academic and private environment. The position and research costs are funded by Benchmark Genetics Iceland for three years.

The project title is  Embyronic Development and Fertility Management in Atlantic Salmon

Sexual maturation of farmed salmon in sea cages creates a risk of genetic introgression of these non-native, selectively bred individuals with wild salmon populations. Sterile salmon will completely prevent this. The goal of this project is to apply molecular genetic techniques to understand early developmental processes in salmon, and then to apply that knowledge to the production of sterile salmon. The PhD student will participate in a research program that integrates both basic and applied research principles.

The student`s primary tasks will involve (i) determining plasticity in embryonic gene expression in response to rearing environment and (ii) designing techniques for the delivery of genetic vectors to embryos. Primary techniques are expected to be transcriptomic analyses and measures of targeted gene expression. Innovation in experimental techniques and research questions is welcomed. The student will be expected to participate in research with animal models, including adult fish.

Where to apply

Requirements.

  • MSc degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, or Related Field.
  • Experience within the field of developmental biology is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English.

The hiring is contingent on the candidate applying formally for the Ph.D. program at the University of Iceland at the corresponding department and that the application is approved by the faculty.

Additional Information

The start date of the PhD position is negotiable but preferably around October 1st 2024.

Applications shall include:

  • A cover letter describing the student's research interests and reasons for applying (1 page maximum).
  • Curriculum vitae (3 page maximum).
  • Copies of university diplomas (BSc and MSc) and course listings with grade information (in English).
  • Names and contact information of two potential references.

All applications will be answered, and applicants will be informed about the appointment when a decision has been made. Applications are valid in the system for 6 months after the application deadline.

Appointments to positions at the University of Iceland are made in consideration of the Equal Rights Policy of the University of Iceland.  http://www.hi.is/haskolinn/jafnrettisaaetlun#markmid2

10 executive leadership programs that should be on every business leader’s radar

Woman attends business seminar, sitting at long table among other leaders.

Many executive leaders spend much of their days in meetings with other people—and yet, their lives can also be very isolating.

“The whole saying, ‘It’s lonely at the top,’ is really true,” says Mike Malefakis, Wharton’s former executive education CEO and associate vice dean. Even though he recognizes this reality, Malefakis also champions the value of continuing education for execs.

Yale - Accelerated Management

Duration8 weeks

Explore fundamental management topics such as decision-making using quantitative models, developing a competitive strategy and leveraging social networks, with industry insights from Yale SOM faculty.

These programs provide an opportunity for connecting, learning, and growing with others holding C-suite positions . The programs freshen up your leadership approaches, and some even offer a sabbatical from typical work life.

If you are especially looking for training that is not as extensive as an executive MBA , many of the nation’s top business schools offer courses and programs tailored for executives that align with leaders’ demanding schedules. Below are 10 executive leadership management programs (some all-online, hybrid, or all in-person) tailored for the C-suite covering topics including risk management, competition, and brand reputation.

The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

C-suite life means long workdays, yet little time to reflect and learn from others. “That’s why the five weeks is critical to almost take a sabbatical from what you’re doing on a regular daily basis and invest in yourself,” Malefakis says. During the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania ‘s five-week, on-campus Advanced Management Program , you’ll attend breakout sessions, simulations, and experiential learning (think: team rowing exercises to practice communication and coordination) with fellow execs. You’ll leave with a methodology to pause, reflect, learn, then act in future business situations. Wharton also offers a hybrid version of the program in which executives make two bookend trips to Philadelphia and complete online courses. Both the on-campus and hybrid options cost $72,500.

Stanford University Graduate School of Business

The Black Leaders Program at Stanford Graduate School of Business is tailored for Black business leaders or those executives looking to advance Black leadership. The weeklong program focuses on race and leadership, power, negotiations, relationships, communication, and networking. The in-person program also provides a space to discuss barriers to leadership and Black identity in the workplace. Following the sessions, you’ll work on a capstone project focused on career advancement, with peer coaching and feedback along the way. Program director Brian S.
