More and more students are choosing to study in South Korea, and the country has recently seen dramatic increases in international enrolments. The government announced a plan to increase international enrolments to 200,000 by 2032 and is working hard to encourage even more students from the US, Europe and Asia to study abroad in South Korea. If you’re considering studying in South Korea, these are the best universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.

The government hopes to entice even more young people to study abroad in South Korea by offering a range of financial incentives to institutions and individuals, streamlining student visa applications and providing employment support for those who have studied in South Korea and wish to stay on and work.

The Incheon Global Campus outside Seoul is a partnership with universities from around the world, offering degrees from the home university taught by faculty members based on-site in South Korea. By some estimates, almost a third of university courses in South Korea are now taught in English, and many universities offer new, dedicated international campuses.

The university’s Yongon campus, based just north of the Han River, is home to the main branch of the Seoul National University Hospital and the medical, nursing and dental schools.

A little way outside town, the Pyeongchang campus includes the Graduate School of International Agricultural Technology as well as the Institutes of Green Bio Science and Technology and the university’s own farm complex.

Famous alumni include former UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, former president of the International Criminal Court Song Sang-hyun, and Lee Jong-wook, who used to head the World Health Organisation. Academic staff include Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen and Fields Medal winner Hironaka Heisuke.

PhD Course Duration in South Korea

Standard duration.

1. Typical Duration: Most PhD programs in South Korea take approximately 3 to 4 years to complete.

2. Extended Duration: It's not uncommon for PhD studies, especially those involving extensive research and experimentation, to extend beyond the typical duration. This can stretch the program to 5 or even 6 years in some cases.

Factors Affecting Duration

1. Field of Study: Some fields, like engineering or natural sciences, may require extensive laboratory work or field studies, potentially lengthening the duration.

2. Research Scope: The complexity and scope of your research can impact how long it takes to complete your dissertation.

3. Coursework Requirements: Some PhD programs require a certain amount of coursework before you can begin your dissertation, which can extend the overall duration.

4. Full-time vs Part-time: While most PhD students in South Korea are full-time, part-time options (if available) can extend the duration of the program.

Integrated MS-PhD Programs

Duration: These programs typically take around 4 to 5 years to complete and are designed for students who wish to pursue a continuous study leading from a master’s degree to a PhD.

Accelerated Programs

In some cases, outstanding students might have options to complete their PhD in a shorter timeframe, particularly if they have already completed significant research or have a master's degree in a closely related field.

Completion Requirements

The PhD usually culminates in the submission and defense of a doctoral dissertation, which is a significant factor in determining the program's duration.

Korean History, Literature, Religions, & Cultural Studies

The Korean studies program at Columbia is one of the premier Korean studies programs in the English-speaking world, and offers specializations in Korean History and Korean Literature. Jungwon Kim in pre-modern and early modern Korean cultural history, Theodore Hughes in modern Korean literature and visual culture, and Seong Uk Kim in Korean religions offer a very broad temporal range and rich variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives.

Columbia’s Starr East Asian Library houses one of the largest collections of Korean materials in North America. The Center for Korean Research at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute plays a leading role in the study of Korea within Columbia University, the New York City area, and beyond. By sponsoring public lectures, conferences, workshops, and cultural events such as movies and concerts on Korea-related topics, the CKR works to advance academic knowledge and a greater public awareness of Korea. The CKR also serves as a bridge between Korean Studies in North America and the most recent work of the Korean academic world through its sponsorship of visiting scholars and active partnerships with universities and institutions in Korea.

Our Korean language program is one of the best in North America. We teach first through fifth-year Korean, including a seminar on mixed script designed especially for Korean studies graduate students. Along with Columbia’s nationally leading Chinese and Japanese language programs, the Korean language program in EALAC is a key component of one the top East Asian language programs in North America.

We emphasize an interdisciplinary, transnational approach to Korean studies. Students thus work with a range of faculty at Columbia. In EALAC, we have great depth on the Japan side, with Carol Gluck, Paul Kreitman, Gregory Pflugfelder, and David Lurie in history, Tomi Suzuki, and Haruo Shirane in literature, and Paul Anderer in Japanese film and visual culture. Our strong Chinese studies program features Madeleine Zelin in modern economic and institutional history, Eugenia Lean in modern cultural history, Dorothy Ko in Ming-Qing cultural history and material history, and Li Feng in early history and archaeology We are just as rich in Chinese literature, with Lydia Liu in modern literature and theory and Shang Wei in Ming-Qing fiction and drama. We have the leading faculty in East Asian religion in this country with Bernard Faure, Max Moerman, and Michael Como in Japanese religions.

Columbia’s location in New York City, home to the second-largest Korean-American community in the United States, provides students with a wealth of Korea-related academic and cultural activities. Students can take advantage of Korea-related talks, film screenings, exhibitions, and other activities at The Korea Society, Asia Society, Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and New York Public Library.

Students in the PhD program at Columbia engage in cutting-edge research on a wide array of topics. Please see the list of recent graduates and their dissertation topics as well as the current PhD student profiles. The PhD program provides full funding (covering both tuition and stipend) for five years. The Korean studies MA program has a very strong record of placing its graduates in PhD programs of high quality or in non-academic jobs related to East Asia; it is a good beginning to either an academic or a professional career. Please contact Korean studies faculty by email to learn more about the PhD and MA programs.

Is the degree program practice-oriented or theory-oriented?

Our faculty focus on skills that are grounded in proven health administration research. The courses are designed to teach skills for the workplace. The seminars and capstone are industry-focused. In addition, the seminar can be taken across cohorts that provide students with professional networking opportunities.

What is the difference between a Master of Health Administration (MHA), a Master of Public Health (MPH) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA)?

The Master of Health Administration degree focuses on skills in leadership, management and operations specific to healthcare systems, such as hospitals and clinics. An MHA prepares you to navigate these systems with knowledge of a broad range of healthcare-specific management, including accounting/finance, marketing, management, law, policy, operations and quality assurance.

A Master of Business Administration improves your business acumen in a broad range of industries. MBA skills transfer into anything from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Profit-driven industries benefit from the business knowledge people with their MBAs possess.

A Master of Public Health is specific to those who want to focus on work that improves the health of entire communities and populations. This includes an understanding of social and behavioral science, environmental health, biostatistics, epidemiology and health policy.

All three degrees help you move into leadership and management positions; however, the MHA and MPH are designed for those looking to become leaders within the health field. Those who earn their MBA can often work in industries that support healthcare but are not necessarily employed by the health systems directly.
