The Microbiological Research and Services Laboratory: A Vital Microbial Resource Center
The Microbiological Research and Services Laboratory (MRSL) is one of the four research and technical laboratories of the Natural Sciences Research Institute (NSRI) at UP Diliman. Starting originally as a small microbial culture collection in 1965, the MRSL has grown to actively engage in the following endeavors: 1) conservation and preservation of microbial culture resources; 2) provision of microbiological services and technical advice; 3) preparation of trainings and workshops serving diverse sectors; and 4) microbiological research in collaboration with researchers and institutions.
The MRSL houses the UP-NSRI Culture Collection (UPCC), a member of the World Federation of Culture Collections (WFCC) with registration number WDCM 310. It is also an affiliate culture collection of the Philippine Network of Microbial Culture Collections, Inc. (PNMCC). Since 1972, UPCC has been maintaining and expanding its collection of approximately 500 cultures of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts in their viable and pure form for instructional, research, and industrial purposes.
The MRSL has developed as a testing and reference laboratory to effectively serve the different sectors of the society through its technical and extension services. The laboratory has provided quality microbiological services to the academe, the students, researchers, the private sector and the industry. MRSL has been performing microbiological analysis of water, food and food ingredients, food supplements and nutriceuticals, personal care products, bioactive compounds, and materials containing antimicrobials. Since 1993, the laboratory has been designated as one of the recognized testing laboratories of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), formerly the Bureau of Food and Drug (BFAD), for the microbiological examination of bottled drinking water.
The MRSL has been engaged in research involving the diversity and potentials of Philippine microbial resources from different ecosystems. Current research projects are focused on sponge-associated marine microorganisms, plant growth-promoting bacteria from the soil-rhizosphere ecosystem of plants belonging to Family Gramineae, and microbial communities in areas associated with submarine groundwater discharge.
Envisioned as a vital microbial resource center, the MRSL aspires to continually serve its growing clientele by providing quality microbiological expertise, resources, and services, and supporting research and development programs of private and government institutions.

Robotics and Autonomous Systems Lab at Vanderbilt
Welcome to the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory (RASL) at Vanderbilt University. We are dedicated to developing new generations of robots and computer-based intelligent systems that are able to interact with people in a smooth and natural way. Examples of our work include virtual reality systems that can sense human emotions from various implicit signals and cues such as one’s physiology, gestures, and facial expressions. The applications of our research range from helping individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities such as autism, schizophrenia, and dementia in learning new skills, to aiding stroke patients regaining some of their movement abilities through robot-assisted rehabilitation, and to providing more autonomy in robots for a variety of tasks.
Here at RASL, we welcome faculty, students, and research staff from a multitude of technical backgrounds, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, psychology and human development, nursing, and medical school. Although primarily a graduate research lab, we encourage and provide research experience to both undergraduate and high school students.
