Be proud of being a Filipino (even if it’s not easy)

Editor’s Note: In celebration of the Philippines’ 117th Independence Day, INQUIRER.net is publishing short essays submitted by our readers.

Gemma Louise Heaton, a teacher at The Lord of Grace Christian School, asked students under her History and Social Studies classes to answer our question: “What’s the best that you have done for our country?” Here are their responses.

‘Be proud of being a Filipino’

What is the best the thing I have done for my country? I actually don’t know because at my age, it is impossible to do something big. Then I realized it isn’t important on how big it is. I think the best thing I’ve done for my country is to be proud that I am a Filipino.

Being proud that I am a Filipino is not quite easy. Sometimes, I even doubt it because of our government. The people have to rally on the streets to get what they want. I feel like it is telling me that we have to go to war first before we can gain peace. When I was in Grade 7, we studied Philippine history. I then appreciated peace. It was not just about the Filipinos fighting the Spanish but how we fought for our independence.

Now, if someone will ask me what is the best thing that I have done for our country, I will tell him or her that I am proud to be a Filipino.

–  Jen Denielle R. Hernandez, Grade 9

‘Give respect’

There are many heroes and heroines who have done big things for the Philippines: Andres Bonifacio, who sacrificed and gave everything for the sake of the Philippines; Melchora Aquino, who risked her life to help the Katipuneros; Dr. Jose Rizal, who is our national hero, and others who sacrificed their lives.

But what is the best thing a 13-year-old girl has done and can do for her country? I am not a mother who is a hero for neither her child nor a father who is a hero for his son. I am just a sophomore student, a girl who knows nothing but to eat, sleep, surf the Internet, watch television and fan-girl over Daniel Padilla. The things I have done for my country so far are to make my parents proud and to give respect. I study to make my parents, as well as my teachers, proud. It is not easy to make a person proud and, at the same time, happy.

I gave relief items to the victims of Supertyphoon “Yolanda” before. Yes, it is a big thing, but for me, giving respect is bigger. It is the biggest thing a 13-year-old girl can do and give. Giving respect, for me, is the sister of loving and loving is the root of caring.

Giving respect is the best thing I have done for my country and for the people around me.

–  Maureen Omanito, Grade 8

‘Study our history, teach it to others’

What’s the best that I have done for my beautiful, loving country? Even if I can’t die for my country like Andres Bonifacio and Dr. Jose Rizal, here are best things that I have done for my country and I will continue to do for my country: In our house, we separate biodegradable, degradable and recyclable trash. For that, I contribute to saving our environment. I also use “ po” and “ opo” because it is one of our Filipino traits well-known by people around the world.

But really, what is the best that I have done for our country? It is to study about its history so that I can teach it to the future young Filipino kids, that they will never forget where they belong. It doesn’t matter if what you’ve done for your country is big or small. Small things can become big things.

You don’t have to die for your country; you can simply do small things that will help the future of the Philippines.

 –  Marie Gold Vivien M. Totanes, Grade 8

‘Do good in school’

When people ask that question, the answer really depends on who you are asking. When you ask an adult, he/she would probably answer something like: “I have donated to charity” or “I have beggars on the street.” But as a sophomore student, and not a financially fortunate one at that, there is only so much I can do.

A lot of people say it doesn’t matter how old you are and stuff like that, “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” But in my perspective, I am just a little girl who is lost in a big world. What is there for a 14-year-old to do that will improve our country? After all the ups and downs in my 14 years of existence, I guess the best I can do is to do good in school, succeed as a student and be an obedient daughter to my family.

If I am an honor student, I can graduate with honors, and graduating with a scholarship is my goal. If I can make to the Dean’s List, I will succeed in the career I want to pursue. If I am going to be a film director in the future, as an adult I can change or improve the country by directing inspirational or motivational films.

– Anna Maria Mikaela Almirez, Grade 8

‘Pray for the nation, embrace our culture’

Praying for our nation is the best I can contribute to our country. When we had our field trip at Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, we were told not to fold the bills. By not folding our monetary bills, I am helping our economy. Embracing our culture is one of the best things I can do for our country.

–  Jean Lalaine F. Rubio, Grade 9

‘Help victims of calamities’

I, with my dad and sister, participated in the “World Wide Walk” fund run to help the people who were affected by a typhoon in the Visayas, a run that broke the Guinness World Record for having a huge number of participants. This event helped the victims of the typhoon in Samar and Leyte. If there are more events like this in the future, I’ll be there to participate and help.

–  VJ Bagani R. Villan, Grade 9

‘Save electricity’

I think the best thing I have done for my country is to save electricity since the Philippines has a power supply problem.   By simply turning off appliances when not in use, we are helping the country.

–  Aira Joy L. Bercero, Grade 10

‘Pick up litter’

As a student, the simple things I can do for my country will snowball to bigger things.   Something as simple as picking up candy wrappers affects us all. This should not be taken lightly, as throwing small things can lead to throwing bigger things. By picking up litter, if done little by little, we are also influencing others to do the same.

– Reimart C. Sarmiento, Grade 10

‘Grow up!’

Being a citizen is a little difficult for the reason that you have to follow the rules implemented by your country. We know that people hate to follow them; if you don’t you, could be sent to jail or you will have to pay the price. You have to submit to the authorities. You have to be responsible and you need to contribute in the simplest way that you can do for your country. Actually, as a citizen, you need to be aware and remember a few things or rules.

As a student, I believe the things that I can do for my country are limitless, as long as I believe in myself. Honestly, when I’m at home, I dislike following the house rules; sometimes, even when I am in school. When I’m outside, I throw garbage anywhere. But when I entered high school, I realized I have to stop these practices because it is childish. I need to grow up in order to contribute to my country. So, I started following the rules, regardless of where I am.

Therefore, I conclude that our society has a lot of problems right now and I’m aware there will be a lot more as time goes by. So stop being a burden in our society: Follow rules and submit to our authorities. Our society has a lot to face they may not be able to help you right now. Grow up!

–  Lois Corliss Q. Rivera, Grade 9

‘Make the right decisions’

Choosing what course to take up in college and which school to apply for are the main thoughts of a Grade 10 student like me, taking up exams in the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University and the University of Santo Tomas. Once we make the right decisions, we are doing the best we can do for our country.

–  Joan Ellaine F. Rubio, Grade 10

I love the Philippines. No matter where I go, I proudly tell people where I am from. If I get blank stares, I bust out my phone and proceed to show them truly how beautiful the Philippines is. However, the more I have traveled to other countries and the more I have seen, I realized that there is so much more to love about the Philippines than just its beautiful beaches. The friendly smiles, the natural instinct to help anyone in need, or just the sheer happiness seen in regular everyday situations are just a few of the things which I think sets the Philippines apart. Given this, I decided to ask a few travel bloggers from all over the world what they love the most about the Philippines. Read on to find out what they have to say!

The Philippines is such an amazing country. It is hard to pin point what I love about it. If I had to name a few things it would be the charismatic people and the epic scenery. I love the Philippines because of the amazingly happy and friendly people. Everywhere I went in the Philippines I was made feel so welcome by the locals . It was like being part of one big family. We ate dinner together, told stories and jokes. Everybody went out of their way to help me and make sure I enjoyed the beautiful islands.  Everybody had so many questions about my home and travels. They also loved to talk about the Philippines and tell stories about their country. The Filipinos are very proud of their country and I do not blame them, it is so beautiful and welcoming. I have never taken so many pictures as I did in the Philippines. It is definitely the most beautiful country I have been too. It is a friendly and uplifting place to be.

I spent a month in The Philippines and it was like living in paradise. The sand was so white and the ocean so clear, it is like stepping into a luxury holiday advertisement. I love how the Filipinos and the Philippines is still true and authentic. Yes some places have become touristy but walk just around the corner and you can find the true beauty of this amazing country. This country is a travellers dream.

✨The 1 Thing We Never Leave Home Without… ✨

Travel Insurance

Coming from someone who has been traveling the world for the last 8 years AND has been in the hospital 2x, travel insurance is something everyone NEEDS to get. Get a quote below!

We spent only 20 days in The Philippines and it was enough to fall in love. It might sound a bit cheeky but it`s true. First, in Boracay, we were absolutely amazed by the White Beach, Puka Shell & Bulabog beach, not to mention the spectacular sunsets. Every day, we would stop whatever we were doing to go to the beach to watch the sunset. Then we took part of the celebration of Señor El Nino in Kalibo, what a powerful experience! After that, we headed to Bohol to see amazing landscapes, beaches, rivers, waterfalls and tasted one of the most delicious foods we have ever tried: jack fruit, coconut, ginger, and Malungay soup. But all of that is nothing compared to the love we received from the Pinoys, in every village we went people came to talk to us, to know where we were from, to introduce us to their families, to invite us for a meal, to get to know us. Every single Filipino we met was absolutely kind, polite and very proud of being a Filipino. Maybe we were lucky, or maybe they liked us, the only sure thing is that we are going to return to The Philippines soon and spend more time with the Filipinos.

Rolling hills in the Philippines

The beauty of the Philippines would have to be the diversity of experiences that this country has to offer, along with the people, of course. Up North, you have mind blowing rice fields and mountains, while down south you have world class surf. Not to mention the paradise on earth  that is Palawan where I stayed in the houses of local fishermen . I have experienced some of the best diving in Cebu and Palawan, swimming through World War II shipwrecks and alongside with thousands of sardines and whale sharks. Apart from that, I got the privilege to work in here in the Philippines and have never found it hard to fit in. I have found the people here very warm and welcoming, always treating me with respect. Although they laugh at my accent and confused face when I see some funny looking food, they always laugh as a friend. The people just make the most of whatever situation life has put them in. Whatever the situation is, most of the time you will find them singing, smiling and making the most out of what life has given them. For me, it’s all these points that will always make the Philippines a special place.

We've scoured the internet for the best ALL-AROUND travel shoe and Tropicfeel wins by far. We've taken ours through rivers, jungles, and cities and they're still alive and kickin'. Check them out below.

The Philippines is one of those countries that you could spend a lifetime traveling to and not see everything. There are many reasons why we love this archipelago (the warm people, the beautiful landscapes, the cost of travel, etc.)…but the top reason would have to be: The Adventure. There aren’t many places in the world where you can live out your Robinson Crusoe fantasies while being left on a deserted island for a couple of days…which is exactly what we did. We slept under mosquito nets, built a fire, tried our luck at spearfishing, went snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and explored the jungle atoll. Just us and two friends, no guide, no boat, nothing. If that’s not adventurous enough for you, you can always try scuba-diving, hiking, kayaking, or riding in a Jeepney! The adventurous aspect of the Philippines is what we love and remember the most.

Palawan Philippines

“It’s pretty impossible to pick only one thing we loved about the Philippines, but to mention something that surprised us a lot in a very positive way was how the Filipino people care about preserving their nature and hidden islands in particular.

We experienced that in some areas representatives of local tourism boards followed ‘carrying capacity rules. They created strict laws of how many people are allowed to enter certain areas (e.g. a park, a waterfall area, a trekking path ), which helps to minimize a negative human impact on nature profoundly. Way to go, Philippines!”

Beaming smiles, gliding boats, booming karaoke bars and more deserted islands than you can shake a stick at; it’s hard to choose my favourite thing about The Philippines. I love the Indiana Jones-esque exploring that can be had by making friends with a local fisherman and simply heading out into the unknown. A crackling fire, fresh-caught fish and an island to myself; what more do you need? If I really have to think hard and put my finger on it I think I would say the people; I’ve traveled to over fifty countries, been on the road for years and made friends in every continent. Wherever I go, I meet nice people but The Philippines is literally FULL of nice people. Forever friendly, unbelievably polite and wonderfully accommodating; some of the people I met in The Philippines have left a lasting impression on me and I am still in touch today; I cannot wait to return.

Philippines food

We know most people will say the best part of the Philippines is all the amazing, pristine beaches, and they are, but as foodies, our favorite thing about the Philippines was lechon. Those of you who have been to the Philippines and has never tried lechon are truly missing out. Lechon is a Filipino pork dish, that’s best in Cebu. Even Anthony Bourdain names Cebu lechon the best! It is a suckling pig , roasted over charcoal. The meat is so unbelievably juicy and the crackling (the skin) is so wonderfully crispy, it’s awesome! A local took us to his favorite lechon spot and it was a real treat. We would go back to the Philippines just for the lechon… MMM

I absolutely, without a doubt love the PEOPLE! From the moment I announced that I was coming to the Philippines, I had loads of locals offer to show me around and wanting to have a drink with me. I had the best night in Manila when I met up with 20 or so friendly locals to eat weird food and sing all night long at karaoke. Everywhere you go people are smiling and wanting to help you!

Filipino food

If there’s one thing to describe the Philippines that will set it apart from neighboring Asian countries , it’s being the melting pot of different cultures having been colonized by Spain, the US, and even Japan.

Not only that, the Philippines has deep ties to the Malays and the Chinese. This rich history and diverse cultural influence is evident in Filipino cuisine , which is unique to its neighbors.

  • Find Filipino food trips for your vacation in the Philippines

Despite having food that has either taken its roots from another culture or has been recreated to fit the Filipino taste, the Philippines has still successfully carved its own space in the gastronomic scene.

Some most notable Filipino foods include adobo, chicken or pork meat cooked in soy sauce and vinegar, and lechon or roasted whole pig, which the late Anthony Bourdain swore by as the best pig he has ever tried.

There's also balut (duck embryo), a Filipino street food perfect for those who like trying exotic dishes, and halo-halo, a famous summer staple with crushed ice, milk, and sweetened fruits.

Philippines jeepney

Once you arrive in Philippine airports , you’ll notice colorful vehicles plying Manila's roads and other busy centers in the country. These are called jeepneys or jeep and are unique to the Philippines as one of the main local public transportation. The fare is quite cheap too.

Riding a jeepney is considered by many travelers as a must-do when in the Philippines because of the local and cultural immersion.

Manila jeepney

Jeepneys are usually painted in loud colors, with their route plastered in front of it. Take note of local words like “para” (stop) and “bayad po” (here’s my payment) if you’re riding a jeepney.

The Filipinos’ culture of being helpful is also reflected as they help one another transfer payment to the driver, especially if you’re seated right at the door of the jeep.

Tricycle in the Philippines

Another interesting transportation mode is the Philippines’ version of a motorized rickshaw known as the tricycle or trike. This is similar to Thailand’s tuk-tuk, only it is a motorbike with a sidecar attached to it.

There’s another version of the tricycle which uses a bicycle; the locals call it pedicab. These two vehicles are meant for shorter drives and are usually found in provinces with narrow roads and fewer jeepneys.

Make sure to take a photo of yourself as you experience these unique transport vehicles because no trip to the Philippines is complete without riding like a local. Some places in the Philippines are best explored through  tricycle transport tours for a more rugged travel experience.
