‘Uppena’ movie review: Romance on the high seas

Backed by appreciable performances, the musical romance goes beyond the norm.

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo

Krithi Shetty and Vaisshnav Tej

Uppena (‘high tide’ in Telugu) is a film that can trigger conversations. The romantic musical discusses social strata divisions. A lot is spoken about honour but thankfully, the film probes something other than honour killings. It discusses masculinity, which is a welcome move.

  • Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Panja Vaisshnav Tej, Kriti Shetty
  • Direction: Bucchi Babu Sana
  • Music: Devi Sri Prasad

A mix of awe, fear and mystery shrouds Kotagiri Rayanam’s (Vijay Sethupathi) daughter Bebamma a.k.a Sangeetha’s (Krithi Shetty) trips to her college. It seems like a chip-off-the-old-block trope when two youngsters are manhandled for daring to venture near the car to get a glimpse of the aristocratic girl. But when the charade is unmasked in a few minutes, it shows the ominous and nearly insane extent to which Rayanam would go to protect his honour.

Casting Vijay Sethupathi is a sign that we aren’t going to witness a cardboard antagonist. There’s scope to show something sinister and Uppena does this, while still working within the realm of mainstream Telugu cinema.

The story has been told over decades and will still ring true. A poor boy falls in love with a rich girl and her father will not tolerate it. The divisions of social strata are stark. The love that Aasi (Vaisshnav Tej) nurtures for Bebamma is adoration laced with innocence.

The romance is poetic, with Devi Sri Prasad’s lilting compositions matching the ebb and flow of the waves captured beautifully by Shamdat. Aasi belongs to the fishing community, which gives ample scope for music and cinematography to romance the sea. Some of the songs are earworms and beautifully picturised but there are one too many of them as the film moves along.

Still, we stay with it because of the freshness with which the romance is portrayed. The girl travels all alone in a bus (a mark of privilege) and the couple manages to steal some time en route. It’s hilarious when he tries to overcome his stutter and pronounce her real name.

However, fear lurks around the corner. Bebamma isn’t safe in her own home when a creepy relative comes visiting. For all of Rayanam’s thunder, he doesn’t take the creep to task, because, honour!

It’s in this context that a few thoughts on masculinity shared by a college lecturer (Geetha Bhaskar in a guest appearance) has an impact on Bebamma. By then she has found Aasi who makes her feel comfortable in his presence and even calls out to him using a term from her biology lesson; and this holds the clue for things to come.

For a while, Uppena explores familiar tropes of the rich man wanting to oust fisherfolk from their homes, and later issuing a threat when the daughter goes missing. The reason behind Rayanam harping on honour comes across as shallow. His indifference to his ailing wife also merited a better discussion. In contrast to this is the warm bond shared between Aasi and his father (Sai Chand, dependable as always).

The pre-mobile phone era setting makes sense as the story navigates a rainy night when the couple is stranded on high seas and later, when they move from one city to another.

Uppena loses some of its steam as it progresses. Something has changed between the couple too. The final reveal puts things in perspective. Had Uppena been crisper and less melodramatic, it could have had an even better impact. Yet, it’s commendable that it enters an uncomfortable territory and discusses masculinity at length.

Vijay Sethupathi’s presence lends the film more gravitas and he is formidable. I wish he had dubbed for himself though. Ravi Shankar’s dubbing is good, however, those who have watched Sethupathi’s Tamil films would know that he has the knack of conveying menace even while uttering the dialogues in a normal pitch. Here, the ‘ enti …’ is thunderous, with an echo.

Krithi Shetty is excellent in the climax where she takes on Setupathi. All through the film, she portrays the naivety and first flush of romance just right. In her, Telugu cinema has found one more new talent to tap into. Vaisshnav Tej is also adequate in his portrayal of Aasi and mercifully, though he comes from a star clan, this film doesn’t prop him up as a larger-than-life hero. The story takes centre stage, which makes all the difference.

Uppena was originally scheduled to release in theatres in April 2020 and did not take the OTT route. It’s an aural and visual feast that merits theatrical viewing. Not just in its depiction of the high seas and life of the fisherfolk, the cycle light sequence in the dead of the night also deserves a mention. For a brief moment, it’s reminiscent of the killing fields sequence from Rangasthalam . Maybe it is Bucchi Babu Sana’s hat tip to director Sukumar, who has co-produced this film.

‘Uppena review’: A deeply disturbing tale that relies on one violent twist

Panja Vaishnav Tej, Vijay Sethupathi and Krithi Shetty in a poster for Telugu film Uppena

Content warning: This film has extreme violence.

How often does a film rely on one big twist? Well, Uppena (meaning high tide in Telugu), the debut film of director Buchi Babu Sana, banks on one extremely violent and disturbing twist. If inspiration from Malayalam and Tamil films resulted in the creation of Colour Photo , Buchi Babu’s Uppena seems to have crossed international boundaries and taken inspiration from South Korean films involving deeply distressing scenes . (I felt thankful that the director did not explicitly show this disturbing scene.)

Uppena stars newcomers Panja Vaishnav Tej and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles with Vijay Sethupathi playing the antagonist. While Vaishnav struggles in his role, Krithi impresses with her performance. Vijay Sethupathi is menacing, to put it mildly. As a casteist feudal lord, Vijay terrifies us each time he appears on the screen. The voiceover given by Ravi Shankar adds strength to his role. Though the dubbing doesn’t sync properly, as the film progresses that doesn’t seem to be a problem.

The plot of the film sounds cliched – a poor teenager from an oppressed caste falls in love with a girl from a dominant caste, and there is resistance to this relationship. However, by defining what constitutes ‘masculinity’, Uppena stands apart from films like Sairat and Kaadhal which had the same theme of caste as a barrier to a relationship.

Aasi (Vaishnav), a Christian from the fishing community, falls in love with Sangeetha (Krithi), the daughter of the village head Kotagiri Rayanam, played by Vijay Sethupathi.

Rayanam takes extreme pride in his caste’s supremacy. He considers his caste pride the only thing worth living and dying for. To keep his ‘pride’ unblemished, he doesn’t hesitate to kill people, only exception being, of course, if they are from his caste.

Whether the couple manage to get away from Rayanam’s clutches and live happily forms the rest of the story.

Director Buchi Babu, who is also the film’s story and screenplay writer, proves that he comes from director Sukumar’s school. Though set in the rural coastal town of Kakinada, the scenes in the first half inevitably remind us of Rangasthalam. But by the end of the film, he proves that there’s more to him than staging a film like his guru .

Consciously choosing a coastal village as the location, with visuals of the tide washing ashore through the film, Buchi cleverly uses it to his full advantage to poetically and symbolically show the depth of love and other emotions running through the story. Full credit to cinematographer Shamdat Sainudeen who does a brilliant job of capturing the breathtaking visuals. Both the film’s cinematography and art department make the film eye-pleasing. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is inconspicuous.

Why I say Buchi is clever is because he knows what the audience expects from a scene and then proceeds to deceive them smoothly.

The romance between Aasi and Sangeetha, whom Aasi has been stalking for 10 years without her knowledge, is quite juvenile and superficial. Sangeetha, a college student, is a ‘bubbly’ teenager with a peculiar belief that anger makes one grow older, reminiscent of Haasini from Bommarrillu, right? But this is a deliberate plot device. Another important character in the film is Sangeetha’s paralysed mother. The director uses her too as a metaphor in the ending.

While Aasi has been fond of Sangeetha from childhood, the latter takes notice of him only when he shows his ‘macho’ side by accidentally hitting her cousin, who was sexually harassing her. The juvenility extends to sharing the same toothbrush as a form of love.

The film changes drastically in the second half. To establish the growing distance in the relationship between the couple and the changes in the story, the director yet again poetically and quite philosophically juxtaposes locations. As the distance between the couple grows, the farther they move away from the sea, eventually reaching the mountainous city of Gangtok in the North East. Quite poetic, right?

Nevertheless, Uppena is a deeply disturbing film. The director compensates for the boring sequences with a traumatic twist. Buchi also undermines the intelligence of the audience at times. Probably worried, since it is his first film, that the audience might not get the visual cues, he takes the effort to explain them orally.

On a side note, something in the film has been bothering me – was the reproductive system taught to degree college students in 2002? Isn’t the lesson supposed to be taught in Class 9 and 10?

Uppena Movie Review: This Film With Panja Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty Challenges The Notion Of Masculinity

Uppena Movie Review: This Film With Panja Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty Challenges The Notion Of Masculinity

Director: Buchi Babu Sana

Cast: Vijay Sethupathi , Panja Vaisshnav Tej , Krithi Shetty

*Minor Spoilers Ahead

When an actor plays a fisherman in a Telugu movie, there's almost always an ode to the sea. It's the same with farming. In a drama about agriculture, you can surely expect a song that romanticises the relationship between nela (soil) and vaana (rain). There's a fancy metaphor, in Uppena , as Aasi (Panja Vaisshnav Tej), the hero, sees the sea in the eyes of Bebamma (Krithi Shetty), the woman he loves.

He sings, " Nee kannu neeli samudram, naa manasemo andhutlo padava prayaanam ." The line roughly translates to — my soul goes on a boat trip in the blue-sea of your eyes. It's a beautiful expression, and in that instant you wonder how poetry can make a language so irresistible. But when the song ends, that lyrical dream also ends, and you're back to watching Aasi follow Bebamma until she takes notice of him. These clichéd scenes are a dime a dozen, and they make no impact since we have witnessed this trope since the 1980s.

Bebamma appears cute to Aasi, and his world rotates in slow-motion when he's stalking her. But he doesn't have enough courage to approach her and talk about his feelings, as he's the son of a fisherman and she's the daughter of Raayanam (Vijay Sethupathi), a guy who owns half the town. Therefore, this isn't merely a story about a rich girl falling in love with a poor boy; it's also about the kind of role that caste plays in society and the place that women occupy in the family tree — they are considered the bearers of honour. Early on in the film, it's revealed that Raayanam turns a blind eye to Bebamma when she complains about her cousin's behavior.

He doesn't admonish his nephew because the latter belongs to the same caste. Yes, Raayanam is a first-class casteist prick.  And he's the sort of guy who takes pride in casually pacing around his office admiring his own pictures and the laurels he has brought to his great family. These segments bring out director Buchi Babu Sana's vision perfectly.

The entire first hour runs pretty quickly as it's packed with songs and courtship scenes. But Uppena gets better only after it swings towards the darker side of the tale. In movies such as this, we, undoubtedly, root for the underdog. We cheer when the hero beats up the goons, or when the heroine gives it back to the misogynists. Though Aasi is introduced as a man who can certainly fend off about four people at a time, he's still a mortal.

He cannot tolerate pain, for he's not Baahubali. When Aasi gets hurt, he can't get up. This is one of the things that the filmmaker must have mulled over while penning the screenplay because the movie relies heavily on this aspect.

While Uppena builds the narrative around this particular ant versus elephant story, where Raayanam is the elephant and Aasi is the ant, it's easy to guess what happens when they come face to face. Also, Babu Sana tries to highlight the struggles that plague the poor. What will the fishing community do if it's sent far away from the sea? How can they travel four kilometers every day to reach their boats in the morning? And why do they have to move to another neighborhood in the first place — to help the rich get richer?  This is precisely what Vetri Maaran 's Tamil movie Vada Chennai was about. But this burning issue gets buried under the weight of Aasi and Bebamma's fears and it is inserted as an extra nugget to remind us of Raayanam's wickedness.

We can understand that Raayanam is a poisoned egg, but we can't take him seriously, as there's a huge gap between his face and his voice. They blatantly come across as two different elements. Vijay Sethupathi is a brilliant performer in Tamil films. However, here, without his original voice, he seems vacant. Just for a moment, imagine Prakash Raj with his voice in this role, and you probably can't sleep well tonight.

Sethupathi may have accepted the role in the hope of addressing social problems. He has been vocal about some of them on social media for a while now. Since casteism ranks higher on the scale of inhumanity in our country, he may have given his nod to lend his support. If this were a Tamil film, it'd have been his home ground and he'd have hit the ball out of the park.

The performances aside, there's a major flaw in the politics of Uppena . It forgives the perpetrator of the crime while it sympathises with the survivor — while Raayanam is simply given a lesson on what love actually entails, he's not punished for the atrocities he commits. Well, if punishment sounds like fulfilling a wish, then there needs to be some kind of a reaction, at least. Do you remember how Deepu ( Chandini Chowdary ) cuts all ties with her brother Rama Raju ( Sunil ) in Colour Photo for messing up her relationship?

In the Tamil short film Love Panna Uttranum, which is part of the Netflix anthology Paava Kadhaigal , Vignesh Shivan also lets a casteist criminal walk away freely. Should Dalits always have to beg to be accepted? Ugh!

You expect the expected when Vijay Sethupathi is in his trusted mood to carry the movie on his well-endowed shoulders. As Kotagiri Sasha Reddy, he is not the routine father who will have his daughter caged in the house. Instead, he barks that the man has to be punished.

And his ways of punishment - prising out the manhood is the sort of performance which should send a chill down the spine of the audience. Only the actor keeps his cool with the instructions to his henchmen that tracing the girl need not have to be on the Innovas but in bicycles to ensure that there is no trace and whisper of the intentions.

Kudos to the debutant director for his choice of the character as he wondered whether anyone could have done justice to a role which called for maturity and not hot-headed like the proverbial villains of the South.

Uppena marks the debut of mega hero Vaisshnav Tej, Krithi Shetty, and director Buchi Babu Sana. Like any fresher setting off from the blocks, the movie opens on a dark scent with the lead man Asirwadam aka Asi (impressive work from Vaisshnav Tej. The endearing flashback reveals that the battered and bruised man is from a backward caste and a fisherman. Predictably, cupid strikes, getting hooked to the charms of Bebamma (a smashing Krithi Shetty). Their bond increases at every turn and in `Ghilli" fashion outsmart the baddies to a distant place in Odisha.

Playing the smart game to the letter, Rayanan inflicts the revenge mode on Asi, murdering him. Only his plans to get Babema married to his relative get scuttled, the girl daring to reveal that she had slept with her beloved and it hardly matters if he is not in a position to do for the rest of her life. She recalls the words of wisdom of her school teacher that a man's protective arm is the endearing gift for any teenaged girl, entering the door of the marital bliss.

Dialogues are the cornerstone of the plot with the classy lyrics enhancing the quality of Devi Sri Prasad. Mention must be made of the song picturisation in the boat (astute visuals of Shyam Dutt) where the girl reminds her beloved that the poignant moment be never had and coaxing him to join the party.

The lead actors must be lucky to have had a seasoned hand like Sethupathi, to bring the best out of them. Kudos to Krithi in the climactic act where she reveals that it hardly matters if her man does not sleep over her but by the side. Tej is at home in such an elated company though a trifle short of emotions in the well-etched romantic segments. Pure, pristine love is at its very best with the visuals a treat for the eyes to beholden.

The fringe artists play their roles unflinchingly, Thalimpu driving home a few points as the buddy of Tej. Sai Chand, and Rajeev Kanakala are at home in set pieces.

'Uppena' Movie Review: Musical But Not Magical

'Uppena' Movie Review: Musical But Not Magical

Movie: Uppena Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: Mythri Movie Makers Cast: Panja Vaisshnav Tej, Vijay Sethupathi, Krithi Shetty, and others Music: Devi Sri Prasad Cinematography: Shamdat Sainuddin Editor: Naveen Nooli Art:  Mounika Ramakrishna Producers: Naveen Yerneni and Y Ravi Shankar Written and Direction: Buchi Babu Kumar Sana Release Date: Feb 12, 2021

Despite being the launchpad for newcomers, “Uppena” has been making quite a buzz with its super hit songs, alluring teasers and trailers, and of course aggressive promotion by the leading production house Mythri Movie Makers.

Let’s check to know the truth in their claims.

Story: The story is set in 2002. In Uppada, a seaside town in Andhra Pradesh, Aasi aka Aashirvadam (Vaisshnav Teja) is a fisherman. The youngster has been developing ‘feelings’ towards Bebamma (Krithi Shetty) since childhood.

She is an upper-caste girl, and daughter of local businessman Raayanam (Vijay Sethupathi), who wants to develop a shipping yard in the village.

Bebamma who is now studying in a college in the nearby city Kakinada yearns for love. Despite his daughter informing him that her bava is harassing her, Rayanam doesn’t take any action on him to keep their family honor intact.

For Raayanam, honor supersedes everything. “Honor and I are not inseparable from one another,” he says. When Aasi accidentally beats her bava, she falls for him and their love story begins.

Needless to say, Rayanam doesn’t tolerate a low-caste youngster dating his daughter. How far Raayanam would go to break these lovers?

Artistes’ Performances: Panjaa Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty are newcomers but their screen presence and the ease that they have exhibited make us forget about their novice background. On the screen, they are cute as a young pair. Vaisshnav Tej fits well in the role of a youngster from the fishermen community.

Krithi Shetty is stunningly beautiful. Her expressive eyes will make young hearts melt.

Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist and father of Krithi Shetty sets the ball rolling. The award-winning actor has not done any exceptional work here, but his screen presence and intimidating nature draw us into the story. His stature is enough.

Senior actor Sai Chand gets another meaningful role and he steals the moments whenever he appears on the screen.

There is no purpose of the mother character in bed. Similarly the bava character ends up without proper closing.

Technical Excellence: Devi Sri Prasad’s music has been topping the charts for over years. The songs are not only hummable, but they are also colorful on the screen. Music is its mainstay. The songs and his highly effective background score have made a huge difference to this predictable story. If not for his music, the film would have fallen flat.

Samdat's cinematography is quite appealing, especially the picturization of romantic sequences and songs that stand out. The visuals are alluring.

Highlights: Devi Sri Prasad’s music Fresh and young pair Rich visuals and production values

Drawback: Predictable storyline Cliched moments Purposeless characters and characterizations  Slow pace

Analysis: New director Buchi Babu’s “Uppena” has a familiar plot that is populated with relatable situations, and a conflict that is clichéd, yet topical. Essentially a love story, “Uppena” tackles the issue of casteism that has been dealt with in many films in recent times.

The love story doesn’t have a unique plot, nor does it have a different conflict point. An upper-caste rich girl falling for a poor low-class boy is a point that we have been seeing for many decades. The girl’s father playing the villain in their story is also a clichéd conflict.

“Uppena” does have all these clichés but new director Buchi Babu focuses less on the story, and more on drawing the audience to the village, their culture.

He plays with simple things, works more on the chemistry of the young couple, relies on situations that would appeal to the youngsters.

The girl raising eyebrows chirpily, the song and drama, the dialogues… these are the elements he gets right that would connect to the young audiences.

He also works on the ‘Rangasthalam’ kind of screenplay technique. ‘Rangasthalam’ hangover can be seen not only in the narrative but also in the characterizations.

Like Ram Charan suffers from hearing deficiency in "Rangasthalam", the protagonist of "Uppena" has a problem of pronouncing ‘ga’. Since he cannot pronounce ga, he calls Sangeeta as ‘Santha’, but rather prefers her nickname Bebamma. But the purpose of this is not established.

The couple running away through Odisa, Kolkata and Gangtok is forceful.

Trouble however starts just before the interval, with predictable situations keep coming in. The dip in the narration continues for a long stretch. Predictability is one of the major minuses of the movie.

These kinds of films rely on the tragic ending, but ‘Uppena’ solely depends on the 'so called shocking’ twist. If we deduct the twist, the film ends up as a regular love story.

But the film does show difference when it reaches the main point in the penultimate sequences. Also, the culmination of Vaishnav's story and the twist is poignant for some and repulsive for others. The climax is handled reasonably.

Debutante Buchi Babu’s direction is decent. Despite being this is his debut film, he has shown command over extracting best from the crew and the cast. He needs to be applauded for his dialogue in the climax part played on a Shiva's idol with a broken hand.

Bottom-line: Not upto the expectation

Uppena Movie Review : A Tale of Love

Uppena Review

Uppena review

Telugu360 Rating : 3/5

Uppena film has generated terrific buzz before it’s release. Trade analysts are expecting big opening numbers for Uppena which never happened for any small film in Telugu cinema. While the distributors are betting huge on the film, Uppena’s success is quite crucial for Telugu cinema and it would give a huge boost for the upcoming movies that are gearing up for release in February and March 2021.

Uppena features Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles.Directed by debutante Buchibabu Sana , Uppena has released all over on February 12th. Let us see how it came out.

Uppena is the story of two youngsters Aasirvadham aka Aasi (Vaisshnav Tej) and Bebamma aka Sangeetha (Krithi Shetty). They come from the same village but from two different families and castes. Aasi is a secret admirer of Bebamma right from childhood days and an unexpected incident brings him to the notice of Bebamma. The duo falls in love instantly and things take an ugly turn after Bebamma’s father Raayanam (Vijay Sethupathi) comes to know about their love story. The rest of Uppena is about their survival for love and Raanayam’s survival for pride. The second half is a battle between love and pride.

Debutant Buchi Babu should be appreciated for establishing the story. He did not miss any minute detail about the premises. Aasi comes from the family of a fisherman and things are taken perfect care of. The way Raayanam’s character is presented will leave the audience in delight. Buchi Babu also got the perfect casting along with the crew. Vijay Sethupathi nails it in style and all his episodes will impress the audience big time. The first half is completely youthful and romantic with some soothing songs and colorful visuals.

The second half of Uppena is emotional and narrates that love is more important than lust and sex. The last 20 minutes of the film is the major USP and the conversation between the father and his daughter is an emotional treat. The second half of the film starts on a dull note and the run away episodes of the lead actors are quite predictable.  The major twist of the film is speculated in media from the past few weeks and it is narrated well without disturbing the audience. The first half an hour is slow paced and predictable. The film picks up at the right time and ends up on an impressive note.

Vaisshnav Tej makes an impressive debut with Uppena. He fits perfectly in the role of Aasi and does his job well. Krithi Shetty is one of the major highlights of the film. She performed with ease and her screen presence is an asset for the actress. She is traditional and beautiful as Bebamma. Vijay Sethupathi is a treat to watch and his rugged look, packed performances take all the episodes of him to the next level. All the supporting actors did their jobs well. Sai Chand plays Vaisshnav’s father and he did his role well as a worried father.

Uppena is just a simple tale of a love story between a rich girl and a poor boy. What makes the difference is the way the film is narrated and presented. Devi Sri Prasad and Shamdat are the major pillars behind the screen. The production values are adequate. Buchi Babu makes a perfect debut with Uppena. He and his team have done enough homework on the styling of the lead actors, setting up the premises and taking the audience to the world of Uppena.

Uppena is a rustic tale that is decently packed with fantastic music, romance and action. The second half has predictable path but climax scores good. Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty make a dream debut with Uppena which will have a decent box-office run.

The Telugu-language love drama film Uppena literally, “High tide”) was written and directed by Buchi Babu Sana, a debutante, in 2021. Produced by Sukumar Writings and Mythri Movie Makers, it features Vijay Sethupathi in a major role with debutants Panja Vaissnav Tej and Krithi Shetty. Following a January 2019 launch event, the film’s major production began in May 2019 and was completed in January 2020. Locations included Kakinada, Hyderabad, Puri, Kolkata, and Gangtok. Devi Sri Prasad wrote the music, while Shamdat and Naveen Nooli handled the photography and editing, respectively. At the 69th National Film Awards, it took home the Telugu title for Best Feature Film.

  3. Uppena Movie Review : A predictable tale that's executed well

Uppena Movie Review: Critics Rating: 3.0 stars, click to give your rating/review,In a film industry that celebrates toxic masculinity, there comes along a film that questions it.

  4. Uppena Review: Climax portion tides over in its favor

Bottom-line: 'Uppena' mostly depends on the new pair's chemistry, the excellent musical track, and the visuals. With predictable story and regular narration, its momentum dips at many places, but the climax portion tides over in its favor. It may work with its target audiences - the youngsters. By: Jalapathy Gudelli. Rating: 2.75/5.

  5. Uppena Movie Review: Vijay Sethupathi Panja Vaisshnav Tej Krithi Shetty

Uppena Movie Review: An age-old love story revitalised by impressive writing. Although the talking point of Uppena will definitely be that shocker of a climax, it is impressive how organic the lead up to that scene feels. At one point in Uppena, Bebamma (Krithi Shetty) calls Aasi (Panja Vaisshnav Tej) a corpus spongiosum.

  7. Uppena Review: The Depths Of Love, With Musical Treasures And Great

Uppena means high tide in Telugu, and the concept is weaved so poetically into the film's cinematography by Shamdat Sainudeen and soundtrack by Devi Shri Prasad and Sukumar. The town's coastal shots and the strong sea waves show parallels to Aasi's and Bebamma's vast love. The lyrics by Sri Mani, Chandrabose, and Raqueeb Alam, particularly in the songs Nee Kannu Neeli Samudram and Jala Jala ...

  8. Uppena Movie Review: This Film With Panja Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi

When an actor plays a fisherman in a Telugu movie, there's almost always an ode to the sea. It's the same with farming. In a drama about agriculture, you can surely expect a song that romanticises the relationship between nela (soil) and vaana (rain). There's a fancy metaphor, in Uppena, as Aasi (Panja Vaisshnav Tej), the hero, sees the sea in the eyes of Bebamma (Krithi Shetty), the woman he ...
