Finance and Investment Management

The combination of academic research and practical, professional focus makes the prospect of studying in the Finance and Investment Management programme of the University of Aberdeen - featuring built-in professional qualifications - highly appealing for those wanting to advance future career and earning potential.

University of Aberdeen Multiple locations Aberdeen , Scotland , United Kingdom Not ranked Studyportals University Meta Ranking 4.3 Read 135 reviews

At a Glance

The well-established Finance and Investment Management programme of the University of Aberdeen is founded on years of financial and investment expertise within the department – and on some powerful global connections with the financial sector. We focus not only on academic success but on helping students to build the broad range of specialist skills and experience that contribute to employability.

The University trading room streams up-to-the-minute data, to enable would-be traders and fund managers to 'practice' investing. It's a hands-on opportunity for you to react instantly to live news feeds and gain the skills required to work productively in the financial services industry, picking up the practical skills required for life at the Stock Exchange before you graduate.

You don’t need a background in finance or business-related-subjects, but being numerate will be advantageous. This programme will provide a thorough grounding in theoretical and practical aspects of finance, economics and investment for both early career finance professionals and those aspiring to enter a finance profession.

A qualification that's gaining momentum, aspiring financiers and junior bankers are taking Masters in Finance qualifications and CFA exams in increasing numbers. Hiring trends in investment banks are shifting, with sales and trading desks looking for a more technical skill set with a higher level of quantitative skills. Finance graduates are highly sought-after, with employer demand showing little sign of slowing down.

Graduates of this programme typically aim for positions in the global corporate and financial sector as a business analyst, asset manager, trader, broker, hedge fund / investment advisor, consultant, credit controller, treasurer, banker, market specialist or accountant.

On the flip side, you might want to opt out of taking the professional finance module (The CFA) and pursue a further academic study of finance – maybe building to a PhD .

A Personal Business Education.

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Piedmont University will take your career to the next level. The program offers an MBA that combines a personal educational experience with the practical knowledge of faculty who have both private industry and academic experience. Plus, with small class sizes, direct interaction with faculty, and a focus on work/life/education balance, Piedmont’s MBA is perfect for busy, working adults.

Offered in an online format, Piedmont’s MBA program is designed to serve the educational and practical interests of those seeking managerial positions or wishing to progress to higher levels of responsibility within their existing organizations. To ensure the best experience, it is preferred, though not required, that those applying for Piedmont’s MBA have at least two years of relevant experience – especially those without prior business degrees. At Piedmont, you will move your business knowledge from understanding to execution, developing skills in critical thinking, ethical decision-making, leadership, and research. Plus, networking with fellow students and experienced faculty is an added benefit.

Graduate students choose Piedmont for their MBA for a variety of reasons. Few programs offer such a personalized experience at such an affordable cost, and the program features faculty who are not only qualified, but who have executed campaigns, projects, and management in the fields in which they teach.

MBA students also now have access to a summer travel abroad experience that can replace 6 credit hours of their 36-credit-hour curriculum.

The Walker College of Business received national accreditation in November 2007 and is reaccredited through 2029 by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) for both undergraduate and graduate business programs.

Walker College of Business graduates have seen their careers accelerate after completing the MBA program. In communities around the country, Piedmont University MBA graduates are leaders in accounting, consulting, finance, management, marketing, and more.

Aberdeen retains 12th place ranking in Guardian University Guide

university of aberdeen phd finance

The latest Guardian University Guide has reaffirmed that the University of Aberdeen is amongst the top ranked universities in the UK.

Aberdeen has held its position in the 2025 Guide, coming in at 12th place in the UK and 2nd in Scotland, sustaining its highest ever achievement in this league table. It has also been ranked 1st in the UK for Medicine for the second year running.

The University’s continued strong performance means it has been in the Top 15 of the league table for the past three years and in the Top 20 for five consecutive years.

It also continues its outstanding performance on metrics relating to student satisfaction with teaching, ranking 9th in the UK.

In addition to Medicine, Aberdeen ranks in the UK Top 10 across six subject areas:

• 3rd - Anthropology and Archaeology

• 4th - Accounting and Finance

• 5th - Sociology and Social Policy

• 7th - Languages and Linguistics

• 8th - Business and Management

• 8th - International Relations

University of Aberdeen Senior Vice-Principal, Professor Karl Leydecker, said: “Having reached our highest ever position in the Guardian University Guide 2024, we are pleased to have held this ranking for a second consecutive year.

“Unlike other national league tables, the Guardian focuses exclusively on teaching and student-facing metrics, with the overall ranking built up from the subject level rankings. This result is a strong affirmation of the focus we put on students and delivering an outstanding experience for those who choose to study with us.”
