Help planning for your career.

Landing a good job after college is a goal for many undergraduate students at UC Davis. Here are seven things you can do now as an undergraduate to prepare you for the job hunt:

1. Get an internship

With an internship, you can connect your classroom studies to the real world. You can try a career on for size and see if it’s a good fit, all while getting beneficial experience for your future resume and job applications.

2. Attend a career fair

The Internship and Career Center hosts several career fairs throughout the year where you can connect with employers, learn about their companies and maybe even interview with them right on the spot.

3. Check out 'Handshake'

Employers love UC Davis students so much that they share numerous job postings with us, and some even make a point of visiting campus to interview students just like you. You can search the jobs they're hiring for on Handshake . Remember to visit this site frequently because postings change often.

4. Find out What You Can Do With Your Major

UC Davis has an award-winning “ What Can I Do With My Major? ”  blog where you can learn about college majors and the careers you can pursue with them. You’ll hear from Aggie alumni about their career paths, read engaging stories and get tips about developing your career path using UC Davis’ many academic programs. The Internship and Career Center also has a robust list of possible jobs available to each major offered at UC Davis.

5. Craft a great resume

There is no one way to craft a resume but making sure yours is well-written is key for helping you land a job. Since there can be such variety and, at the same time, it is so important to get it right, getting expert advice on resume writing is super important. Fortunately, UC Davis has tons of free, online and in-person resources available to help students with this skill.

6. Practice interviewing

Perfecting your interview skills is key for landing a job in any career field. The Internship and Career Center offers free online practice interviews through Aggie Job Link. The Student Alumni Association (SAA) also has Interview With an Aggie events where SAA members can go through a mock interview with alumni. Once you get some practice under your belt, you can sign up to meet an employer on campus .

7. Volunteer

Volunteerism can be a great way to get exposure to new projects or see if a career field is right for you. It can be especially important to volunteer at a health clinic if you are interested in pursuing a career in human or veterinary medicine.

Before you venture out into “the real world,” check out this helpful job search checklist to make sure you’ve taken all the right steps for putting your best foot forward as you look for a job.

Resume guidelines, your resume is an effective marketing tool that captures the reader's attention and helps you secure an interview..

  • Keep your resume to one or two pages; two pages is a standard length if you have had 5 or more years of professional work experience.
  • Focus on including relevant information for the position you are applying for; resumes should not overwhelm the reader with information.
  • Customize your resume for each position by including information from your skills and experience that best demonstrate the reasons you should be hired.
  • Describe your unique accomplishments to avoid having your resume sound like a repeat of your job description.  Your  accomplishment statements  will help make your resume different from someone else with the same position description.
  • Include keywords, which can be identified by analyzing the position description, conducting informational interviews, and doing research about the occupation.
  • Do not use abbreviations or acronyms unless you are absolutely certain the reader knows what the abbreviations mean. Remember that someone without industry knowledge, such as a recruiter, may be screening your resume.
  • Use plenty of white space.
  • Use wide margins (at least .75 inches on the top and sides and at least .5 inches on the bottom)
  • Use bullets to highlight key points.
  • Use a readable font (Calibri or Arial are good choices) and appropriate font size. Avoid using a font less than 11 point in trying to get your resume on one page.
  • Indent or double space to separate sections.
  • Be selective with your use of bold, special typeface and print size.  Use no more than two fonts and special types.
  • Do not use personal pronouns such as “my” or “I”.
  • Keep your verb tense consistent. Use present tense for your current position and past tense for previous positions.
  • Make sure your resume is clean and professional looking with no spelling or grammatical errors. Use spell check and ask someone to proofread your resume.
  • Have your resume critiqued by someone knowledgeable about your field.
  • When submitting your resume file it should be in PDF format.
  • Every time you send out your resume, you need to re-evaluate if it is relevant to the position to which you are applying. You may need to shift the order of the bullets, include different accomplishment statements, or rewrite certain sections so that the most relevant information is seen first.
  • Leave off personal information and hobbies unless they are particularly relevant to the position. For example, if you spend your time fostering kittens and are applying for a position with the School of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Be truthful and don’t exaggerate.

Cover letters.

Cover letters are a way to create a personalized statement that explains how you as the applicant meet the needs of the employer. This is about marketing yourself and telling your story. It goes with your resume, which is a summary of your experiences, skills and accomplishments. Each cover letter should be tailored to match the specific position and employer.

Sections of a Cover Letter

Personal contact info.

Required: Name, Address, Phone, Email Optional: LinkedIn, Online portfolio

Employer's Contact Info

Name, Department, Company, Address. If no specific person's name use position title or department name. If there is no known address, use an email address with city/state.

Try to address your cover letter to a person. If there is no specific name, use "Dear Search Committee,", "Dear Hiring Manager," or "To Whom it May Concern:"

Beginning Paragraph

Introduce yourself and express your interest in the position. Possible subjects include:

  • Who you are - year in school, university, major.
  • The specific job title.
  • How you heard about the job and, if appropriate, the person who told you about it.
  • Why you're interested in the position (be specific!).
  • Why you're qualified. This should be a brief one sentence summary of why you are a good fit for the position (similar to a thesis statement).

Middle Paragraph(s)

Describe 1-3 of your experiences/projects that show your job-specific skills and qualifications. Make sure to:

  • Show how you make a good fit with the position/organization.
  • Focus on what you will bring to the organization and why they should hire you. Go into more detail then your resume - don’t just restate your bullets.
  • Break up the paragraph into smaller sections if it is too big. Smaller paragraphs are more readable.

Ending/Summarizing Paragraph

Final interest and fit statement in which you:

  • Include your availability, and how you will follow through with the application. Tell the reader what is the best way to reach you and how to reach you.
  • Thank the employer for their consideration.
  • Add any other practical remarks - e.g. if you have not completed a certification yet but are scheduled to take the exam, or if you will be relocating or will be visiting the area soon

Closing Signature

"Sincerely", "Best Regards", "Yours", Hand-written signature AND Typed name. Best to hand-write signature but if you are unable to scan document you can use script-like font instead

A cover letter is an important tool to use when applying for a job because it:

  • Introduces you to the prospective employer
  • Highlights your enthusiasm for the position
  • Describes your specific skills and qualifications for the job or internship, and clearly explains why you are a good fit

You should always include a cover letter when applying for a job unless you are specifically told not to by the employer. We recommend that you write a cover letter after you have created your tailored  resume or  curriculum vitae (CV) for a particular position. When applying online and limited to uploading one document, you can create a single PDF document that includes both your resume and cover letter.

For advanced degree positions, see Developing Application Materials for Academic Jobs or Developing Application Materials for Non-Academic Jobs .

Tips on Using AI for Cover Letters You can use AI to assist you, but you always want to create a specific, unique prompt and edit the results so that what you submit to the employer is in your authentic voice. AI is a helpful tool to use, but not meant to replace your own writing in job applications. See our recommendations for  incorporating AI for cover letters here.
