Brief history of different grading systems

In 1785, students at Yale were ranked based on "optimi" being the highest rank, followed by second optimi, inferiore (lower), and pejores (worse). At William and Mary, students were ranked as either No. 1, or No. 2, where No. 1 represented students that were first in their class, while No. 2 represented those who were "orderly, correct and attentive." Meanwhile at Harvard, students were graded based on a numerical system from 1-200 (except for math and philosophy where 1-100 was used). Later, shortly after 1883, Harvard used a system of "Classes" where students were either Class I, II, III, IV, or V, with V representing a failing grade. All of these examples show the subjective, arbitrary, and inconsistent nature with which different institutions graded their students, demonstrating the need for a more standardized, albeit equally arbitrary grading system.

In 1887, Mount Holyoke College became the first college to use letter grades similar to those commonly used today. The college used a grading scale with the letters A, B, C, D, and E, where E represented a failing grade. This grading system however, was far stricter than those commonly used today, with a failing grade being defined as anything below 75%. The college later re-defined their grading system, adding the letter F for a failing grade (still below 75%). This system of using a letter grading scale became increasingly popular within colleges and high schools, eventually leading to the letter grading systems typically used today. However, there is still significant variation regarding what may constitute an A, or whether a system uses plusses or minuses (i.e. A+ or B-), among other differences.

An alternative to the letter grading system

Letter grades provide an easy means to generalize a student's performance. They can be more effective than qualitative evaluations in situations where "right" or "wrong" answers can be easily quantified, such as an algebra exam, but alone may not provide a student with enough feedback in regards to an assessment like a written paper (which is much more subjective).

Although a written analysis of each individual student's work may be a more effective form of feedback, there exists the argument that students and parents are unlikely to read the feedback, and that teachers do not have the time to write such an analysis. There is precedence for this type of evaluation system however, in Saint Ann's School in New York City, an arts-oriented private school that does not have a letter grading system. Instead, teachers write anecdotal reports for each student. This method of evaluation focuses on promoting learning and improvement, rather than the pursuit of a certain letter grade in a course. For better or for worse however, these types of programs constitute a minority in the United States, and though the experience may be better for the student, most institutions still use a fairly standard letter grading system that students will have to adjust to. The time investment that this type of evaluation method requires of teachers/professors is likely not viable on university campuses with hundreds of students per course. As such, although there are other high schools such as Sanborn High School that approach grading in a more qualitative way, it remains to be seen whether such grading methods can be scalable. Until then, more generalized forms of grading like the letter grading system are unlikely to be entirely replaced. However, many educators already try to create an environment that limits the role that grades play in motivating students. One could argue that a combination of these two systems would likely be the most realistic, and effective way to provide a more standardized evaluation of students, while promoting learning.

How to Check Your Grades on Google Classroom from a Windows, Mac, or Chromebook Computer

The operating systems for all three of the above are vastly different. Yes, a Windows computer can do just about anything that a Mac can, just in a different way. Chromebooks are much inferior in this regard as designed.

But it does not matter. Because Google Classroom, like any other part of the Google ecosystem, is browser-based. And no, it does not have to be Google Chrome.

Setting Up a Grading System

There are two grading system options on Google Classroom, not counting No overall grade. You can choose between Total points and Weighted by category. For either, the grades will be calculated automatically for you.

Google Classroom also allows you to organize your classroom into three grade categories, Essays, Tests, and Homework. Although categories are available with both Total points and No overall grade grading, they are needed for Weighted by category.

Keep in mind that selecting a grading system can only be done on the web browser version.

No Overall Grade

The No overall grade system is pretty straightforward – grades aren’t calculated and students can’t see the grades.

Total Points

The Total points system is the average grading system. The total points earned by a student are rounded up and divided by the total points possible. If you choose to do so, you can allow students to see their average grades with this system.

Weighted by Category

This system adds up the scores across categories. It’s the most straightforward of the two grading systems. If you choose to do so, you can allow the students to see their overall grades.

Giving Google Classroom Assignments Feedback

You can easily give feedback to your students regarding their assignments. Simply open their work in Google Classroom, highlight the passage, and click Add a comment. It works pretty much like physically adding comments to your students’ work. Only better and smoother.

Grading and Returning Assignments in Google Classroom

You can grade assignments in Google Classroom in numeric grades. This is the most straightforward way to grade your students. It is also the only way to calculate grades. The other thing you can do is leave comment-based feedback. Of course, assignments can be returned without grades.

This can be done from the Classroom grading tool on the Student work page as well as the Grades page. Here is how to do it.

Can students see their grades in Google Classroom?

Yes, if the teacher allows them to. For Total points and Weighted by category grades, there’s a Show option that the teacher can turn on or off. Naturally, if the option is on, the classroom attendees will be able to see their overall grades. Of course, if No overall grade is selected, no grade will be calculated and students won’t see any grade.

How do you download grades to Google Sheets?

The Google ecosystem has made things very convenient for Google features within that ecosystem. Seeing as how both Google Classroom and Google Sheets are well within it, Google allows you to easily download grades to a Google Sheets document.

To do this, go to classroom.google.com and select the class in question. Then, go to Classwork and select View question. Then, in the upper-right corner of the screen, go to Settings, followed by Copy all grades to Google Sheets. A spreadsheet will automatically be created in your Google Drive folder.

What can teachers see on Google Classroom?

As the host, everything. They can see which students are in their class, which hasn’t handed in their assignments, which assignments have been graded, the grades. The Google Classroom hosts can also edit various settings, choose grading systems, add new students to classes, remove students from classes, etc.

Can my teacher see me on Google Classroom?

Although teachers get vast amounts of control over their classrooms, they cannot technically see you on the screen. While they’ll be able to see if you’ve turned in your assignments and access the school projects, the host won’t be able to see if you’re accessing the platform or doing work on it. So, you can rest easy in this department.

IGNOU Assignment Status 2024

As we all know that the university has started the submission of IGNOU Assignment for TEE June 2024 session. Therefore, we hope that the IGNOU RCs across the country has also begun to update the IGNOU Assignment Status Online for the most recent TEE session June 2024. As of now, the students will only get to know the status of “ Received to be Processed ” as the assignment marks and results for the session June 2024 will be declared together with IGNOU TEE Result June 2024. Therefore, candidates are advised to do check their IGNOU Assignment status regularly to get their assignment marks and results online as soon as possible.

IGNOU assignment status and marks for TEE December 2023 are now uploaded with the TEE Result December 2023 so keep checking the assignment status regularly to get your marks. If you already submitted the IGNOU Assignment for the session December 2023 to your study centre or through online or offline mode then you don’t have to wait for more time. The link to check your assignment status and marks is now updated to confirm whether it gets updated online or not. The assignment status and marks for June & December 2023 are generally updated with the TEE Result for June & December 2023 respectively.

IGNOU Assignment Status Update Process & Time

After submission of assignments through any of the available methods, the assignments goes for an evaluation to the evaluator of the study centre or regional centre. Once Evaluator has successfully evaluated your assignment then they will either upload your marks directly on the IGNOU Official Site or it will be sent to IGNOU Delhi for updating online and thereafter it can be seen by each student to get their report. You can get your Marks, Status, Grades, and Results of your Assignments from here. Generally, IGNOU Assignment marks updating and uploading within 40 days after submission to the concerned study or regional centre.

The students of TEE June 2024, December 2023, June 2023, and December 2022 may check the status of their IGNOU Assignments from here. How to Check IGNOU Assignment Status, Marks & Result 2024?

Many of the students are getting confused about checking their assignment status & marks online after the submission of their assignments to the study centre which they prepared with their hard work. Step – 1 – Click on the given link to check IGNOU Assignment Status 2024.

Step – 2 – Now enter your enrollment number on the window that opens.

IGNOU Assignment Status Meaning

When you check through the IGNOU assignment status, you may come up with three different statuses accordingly. Here are the meanings of these statuses that you notice on the window:

Received to be Processed: This status means the portal has received the assignment successfully.

Received and in Process: According to this status, the authorities have downloaded your assignment to start the evaluation.

Check Grade Card Status for Detail: Finally, your assignments are checked and marked.

IGNOU Assignment Result and Marks 2024

The assignment status will show you when the evaluation is done. The university will start updating your marks on the grade card as soon as the evaluation of the assignments is done. So, you must check the grade card after the assignment status says you to do so.

Step – 1 – Visit the official IGNOU portal at www.ignou.ac.in and go to Student Zone.

Step – 2 – Search for Results and click on it.

Step – 3 – From the left panel, click on Grade Card.

Step – 4 – Provide your program, course, and enrolment number to search and get your grade card.

As you see your grade card, you can check whether the university has updated your assignment marks on it or not. If the search results are leading to an error, this means the university has not yet started updating the grade cards of the students for this semester.

What If IGNOU Assignment Status Is Not Updated?

Sometimes the update process of IGNOU Assignment status gets delayed for an unknown reason like the evaluation of assignments is delayed in the concerned study centre or maybe the regional centre has not uploaded your assignment marks online. Candidates can wait till the declaration of the result to get updates on their assignment but if you are not able to find your assignment status or marks even after the release of the TEE Result then you need to connect with centre where you submitted your assignments.

The IGNOU has released the guidelines that students must comply while preparing and submitting their assignments. Here are the updated guidelines:

All the assignment should be hand written.

Students must use A4 ruled paper (unless it is instructed on your TMA).

Leave 4 cm margin on left and right side of each page.

Do not use staplers, to bind the pages; you use need threads (what is typically found with cover files).

Avoid using any ink colour other than blue and black.

First you need to attach the cover page (You will find it at your study centre).

Then, attach a photocopy of your IGNOU ID card.

After that, attach a copy of your TMA (question paper on your assignment document).

Lastly, attach your hand written answers.

Leave one blank page in the end.

Do not use any files while submitting your assignments. Your assignment should only consist of the pages, tied with a thread.

You must take a submission receipt, which will be stamped by the study centre with submission dates. In case, your study centre is unable to provide you one, take a photocopy of the cover page of your assignment and get that stamped.

Note: For submission of practicals, you need to use a cover file.

Before viewing a student's assignment, you can see the status of student work and the number of students in each category.

Go to classroom.google.com .
Select the class.
At the top, select Classwork .
Select the assignment to display.
Tip: You can only get to the student work page when the number isn't '0' for both 'Handed in' and 'Assigned'.
Assigned – Work that students have to hand in, including missing or unsubmitted work
Handed in – Work that students have handed in
Marked – Marked work that you’ve returned
Returned – Unmarked (non-marked) work that you've returned

When you enter a mark, it syncs between the marking tool, the Marks page and the Student work page.

As you mark assignments, you might notice the work or mark status is colour-coded:

Red – Missing work.
Green – Handed in work or draft mark.
Black – Returned work.

Other colours are based on your class theme and don’t indicate work or mark status.

You and your co-teachers can find all marks in both points value and the level it corresponds to.
A student can find both the points value and the level it corresponds to if a mark is returned.
You can only set up marking scales through a computer.
Tap the student's name.

To return the assignment to the student, tap Return .

Students get their marks when you return their assignments. You can return assignments during another marking session.

You can see how the mark for an assignment has changed and how many times a student has submitted an assignment.

You can change a mark after you return an assignment to students. Also, students can do more work and re-submit the assignment. You can then change the mark and return the assignment again.

Tap the name of the student whose mark you want to change.

Note: The student can view their new mark when you return their assignment.

Return work or download marks

Students can’t edit any files attached to an assignment until you return it. When you return work, students get notifications if they’re turned on. You can return work, with or without a mark, to one or more students at a time.

Set up a marking scale

Click the class.

In 'Marking', under 'Marking scale', click Add .

On the right, tick the box next to the class that you want to copy your marking scale to.

At the top right, click Save .

When you remove a custom marking scale that was previously used in a class, a confirmation dialogue displays, and you won't be able to access it again.

Students can view their marks when you return their assignments.

Tap the box next to each student whose assignment you want to return.
Tap Return and confirm.

Note : If an assignment is incomplete, you can return it without a mark. In that case, the mark status shows Assigned –or Missing if it’s late – and the mark field is empty.

The student’s assignment is marked Returned.

Before you return the assignment, you can add a private comment.

In the top part of the form, enter how much your final exam is worth and the grade that you would like to get in the class. For example, your final test might be worth 20% of your overall grade and you want to get at least a 93% in the class. You would enter these numbers into the form.
In the bottom half of the form, enter a description (optional) of the classwork, the grade received for that classwork, and the weight of the classwork. Most class grades are made up of several components such as homework assignments, tests, exams, quizzes, class participation, attendance, etc. For example, a class exam might be worth 10% of your grade and you received a 95% on the test. You would enter those values into the form.
If you need more than four rows, press the "Add Row" button to add an additional line. You can add as many rows as you need.
Once you have finished entering your grades, press the "Calculate" button and the grade you need on the final exam will be displayed.

final grade = ((g wanted x w total ) - gw) / w final

w total = w 1 + w 2 + w 3 + ... + w final

w 1 = weight of assignment #1

w final = weight of final exam

gw = g 1 x w 1 + g 2 x w 2 + g 3 x w 3 + ...

g 1 = grade for assignment #1

g wanted = grade wanted in the class

Example Calculation

Let's say your class has the following grading plan.

Now let's assume you received the following grades on your classwork.

Finally, let's assume that you want to get a 90% in the class. To determine what you need to get on your final exam in order to get a 90% in the class, let's do some math using the formula above.

First add the weight of all the class assignments together including your final:

w total = 10% + 10% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 100%

Next, multiple the grade you received on each assignment by the weight of the assignment.

gw = (91% x 10%) + (85% x 10%) + (75% x 20%) + (95% x 20%) + (97% x 20%) = 7100%

Now, calculate what you need on the final exam:

final exam grade = ((90% x 100%) - 7100%) / 20% = 95%

This is how you manually calculate your final grade. Of course, you can make your life a little easier using the calculator above!

What if my class grade is based on points rather than percentages?

Let's assume you have the following class syllabus that is based on points.

Let's assume you received the following grades.

To enter these grades in the calculator above, you first need to calculate your grade percentage for each assignment using the following formula:

grade percentage = points earned / possible points x 100

So taking your mid-term test grade as an example, we get the following:

mid-term test = 190 points earned / 200 possible points x 100 = 95%

In the weight column of the calculator, you would enter the possible points for each assignment.

Assuming you wanted to get at least a 90% in the class and your final exam is worth 250 points (i.e.the weight), you would enter the following information into the calculator.

In this example, you would need to get a 93.6% on your final in order to get a 90% in the class.

AIOU Assignment Marks Now Available on LMS

The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has launched a new feature that will allow students to view their assignment marks directly on the LMS portal of AIOU.

B.A Assignments Marks Punching on LMS

AIOU has started giving students their assignments marks by 2022. The students will now be able to track their assignment marks through an interface in AIOU LMS 2022.

Enter your username and password

Once you log in to your Allama Iqbal Open University account, you can get your marks.

The marks will be categorized into one of three options – pending, graded, or assigned.

In all cases, you should see a list of assignments for that class and each will show your performance with respect to it.

An email was sent out about how to check AIOU assignment marks by using the LMS portal login AIOU methodically in every user account.

What if you have an issue with your LMS

Log on to your account and click on My Assignments in the top-right corner of your LMS page. In there, you will find an option to enter assignment marks. Enter your assignment’s code and select its department.
