How To Find A Research Topic

Before we look at specific research ideas and topics, it’s useful to first understand what the topic ideation process entails and how to go about finding and refining viable topic ideas. In the video below, we cover exactly that. So, if you’re a first-time researcher, be sure to watch this tutorial before jumping into the collection of marketing research topics we present below.

Marketing research and analytics are used by companies to link information about products, customers and markets to financial metrics like sales, margin, and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization). Further, McKinsey & Company claims that marketing and sales leaders need to use analytics since companies that effectively use data will improve productivity and profitability. Marketing research is increasingly being incorporated into the strategic planning function by organizations. This shift is increasing the scope and demand for marketing managers with strong research skills as well as the need for market research analysts and survey researchers.

The M.S. major in Marketing Research and Analysis is a specialized degree program that helps to fill the disconnect between marketing practice and marketing education. As technology advances and data collection becomes the primary source for managerial decisions, a need has evolved for a managerial workforce with advanced degrees in marketing to be able to make effective use of this vast amount of data coming into the organization. These marketing research and analysis functions are a critical part of modern marketing in organizations. Effective organizations are making decisions based on facts and these facts are gleaned from analysis of incoming data. More and more organizations are using marketing analytics and digital marketing. There is an unmet need for marketing professionals who can interpret and relate that data to marketing decisions as well as make marketing decisions in an increasingly digital marketplace.

  • $55 nonrefundable application fee

  • baccalaureate degree (preferably in business administration or a related field) from a regionally accredited university
  • official transcripts from  each institution  where course credit was granted
  • a competitive GPA in the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses)
  • knowledge of business functions (management, marketing, finance, accounting, MIS) demonstrated through previous course work and/or work experience
  • Fall 2023: official GMAT or GRE (general test only) with a competitive score.
  • Fall 2024: official GMAT or GRE (general test only) with a competitive score for those who do not have a last-60-hours GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • responses to specific essay questions on the statement of purpose
  • resume/CV detailing work experience, extracurricular and community activities, and honors and achievements
  • three letters of recommendation from persons best able to assess the student’s ability to succeed in graduate school

TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS Scores

Non-native English speakers who do not qualify for an English proficiency waiver:

  • 19 listening
  • 19 speaking
  • official PTE scores required with a 52 overall
  • official IELTS (academic) scores required with a 6.5 overall and minimum individual module scores of 6.0

This program does  not  offer admission if the scores above are not met.

Degree Requirements

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree with a major in Marketing Research and Analysis requires 30 semester credit hours, including a thesis.

Any student enrolled in a graduate degree program in the McCoy College of Business Administration can earn no more than two grades of C or lower. Even if the grade of C or lower was replaced with a higher grade as a result of repeating the course, the original grade counts as a “strike” under this policy. Upon earning the third C (or lower), the student is automatically placed on academic suspension and permanently dismissed from their degree program without any possibility of readmission to their program or another degree program in McCoy College. The 3 C Policy takes precedent over probationary status. So, if a student earns a third C they are automatically dismissed from their program permanently; even if probation does not occur.

Course Requirements

Comprehensive examination requirement.

All students are required to take a written comprehensive examination in their last semester of the program.  Students must pass the comprehensive exam during the last semester in at most two attempts. If a student fails to pass the comprehensive exam in two attempts during the final semester, the student will be required to take GC 5100 the following term to retake the comprehensive exam.

Students who do not successfully complete the requirements for the degree within the timelines specified will be dismissed from the program.

If a student elects to follow the thesis option for the degree, a committee to direct the written thesis will be established. The thesis must demonstrate the student’s capability for research and independent thought. Preparation of the thesis must be in conformity with the  Graduate College Guide to Preparing and Submitting a Thesis or Dissertation .

Thesis Proposal

The student must submit an official  Thesis Proposal Form  and proposal to his or her thesis committee. Thesis proposals vary by department and discipline. Please see your department for proposal guidelines and requirements. After signing the form and obtaining committee members’ signatures, the graduate advisor’s signature if required by the program and the department chair’s signature, the student must submit the Thesis Proposal Form with one copy of the proposal attached to the dean of The Graduate College for approval before proceeding with research on the thesis. If the thesis research involves human subjects, the student must obtain exemption or approval from the Texas State Institutional Review Board prior to submitting the proposal form to The Graduate College. The IRB approval letter should be included with the proposal form. If the thesis research involves vertebrate animals, the proposal form must include the Texas State IACUC approval code. It is recommended that the thesis proposal form be submitted to the dean of The Graduate College by the end of the student’s enrollment in 5399A. Failure to submit the thesis proposal in a timely fashion may result in delayed graduation.

Thesis Committee

The thesis committee must be composed of a minimum of three approved graduate faculty members.

Thesis Enrollment and Credit

The completion of a minimum of six hours of thesis enrollment is required. For a student's initial thesis course enrollment, the student will need to register for thesis course number 5399A.  After that, the student will enroll in thesis B courses, in each subsequent semester until the thesis is defended with the department and approved by The Graduate College. Preliminary discussions regarding the selection of a topic and assignment to a research supervisor will not require enrollment for the thesis course.

Students must be enrolled in thesis credits if they are receiving supervision and/or are using university resources related to their thesis work.  The number of thesis credit hours students enroll in must reflect the amount of work being done on the thesis that semester.  It is the responsibility of the committee chair to ensure that students are making adequate progress toward their degree throughout the thesis process.  Failure to register for the thesis course during a term in which supervision is received may result in postponement of graduation. After initial enrollment in 5399A, the student will continue to enroll in a thesis B course as long as it takes to complete the thesis. Thesis projects are by definition original and individualized projects.  As such, depending on the topic, methodology, and other factors, some projects may take longer than others to complete.  If the thesis requires work beyond the minimum number of thesis credits needed for the degree, the student may enroll in additional thesis credits at the committee chair's discretion. In the rare case when a student has not previously enrolled in thesis and plans to work on and complete the thesis in one term, the student will enroll in both 5399A and 5399B.

The only grades assigned for thesis courses are PR (progress), CR (credit), W (withdrew), and F (failing). If acceptable progress is not being made in a thesis course, the instructor may issue a grade of F. If the student is making acceptable progress, a grade of PR is assigned until the thesis is completed. The minimum number of hours of thesis credit (“CR”) will be awarded only after the thesis has been both approved by The Graduate College and released to Alkek Library.

A student who has selected the thesis option must be registered for the thesis course during the term or Summer I (during the summer, the thesis course runs ten weeks for both sessions) in which the degree will be conferred.

Thesis Deadlines and Approval Process

Thesis deadlines are posted on  The Graduate College  website under "Current Students." The completed thesis must be submitted to the chair of the thesis committee on or before the deadlines listed on The Graduate College website.

The following must be submitted to The Graduate College by the thesis deadline listed on The Graduate College website:

  • The Thesis Submission Approval Form bearing original (wet) and/or electronic signatures of the student and all committee members.
  • One (1) PDF of the thesis in final form, approved by all committee members, uploaded in the online Vireo submission system.  

After the dean of The Graduate College approves the thesis, Alkek Library will harvest the document from the Vireo submission system for publishing in the Digital Collections database (according to the student's embargo selection).  NOTE: MFA Creative Writing theses will have a permanent embargo and will never be published to Digital Collections.  

While original (wet) signatures are preferred, there may be situations as determined by the chair of the committee in which obtaining original signatures is inefficient or has the potential to delay the student's progress. In those situations, the following methods of signing are acceptable:

  • signing and faxing the form
  • signing, scanning, and emailing the form
  • notifying the department in an email from their university's or institution's email account that the committee chair can sign the form on their behalf
  • electronically signing the form using the university's licensed signature platform.

If this process results in more than one document with signatures, all documents need to be submitted to The Graduate College together.

No copies are required to be submitted to Alkek Library. However, the library will bind copies submitted that the student wants bound for personal use. Personal copies are not required to be printed on archival quality paper. The student will take the personal copies to Alkek Library and pay the binding fee for personal copies.

Master's level courses in Marketing: MKT 

MKT 5199B. Thesis.

This course represents a student’s continuing thesis enrollments. The student continues to enroll in this course until the thesis is submitted for binding.

MKT 5299B. Thesis.

MKT 5321. Marketing Management.

A study of the planning and coordination of marketing functions, marketing policies, and the analysis of marketing administration. Prerequisite: B A 5351 with a grade of "C" or better.

MKT 5322. Marketing Research Methods.

An advanced study of the marketing research process to include problem formulation, determination of sources of information and research design, design of data collection forms, design of the sample, collection of the data, analysis and interpretation of the data, preparation of the research report, and oral presentation of the research findings. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 and QMST 5334 both with grades of "C" or better.

MKT 5323. Qualitative Research in Marketing.

This course examines qualitative methods as used in marketing and market research. Topics include the design and execution of qualitative research projects using various qualitative methodological approaches. Activities include application of qualitative methods for conducting research. Students will apply learning in a qualitative research project.

MKT 5330. International Marketing.

An application of marketing concepts to the global business environment. Examines marketing in the light of international economic, social, cultural, business, and environmental factors. Prerequisite: B A 5351 with a grade of "C" or better.

MKT 5331. Integrated Marketing Communications.

An analysis of consumer behavior in the marketplace and its application to the preparation and presentation of a complete integrated marketing communications plan for a local, regional, and/or national client. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 with a grade of "C" or better.

MKT 5335. Services Marketing.

Services dominate the U.S. economy and are becoming critical for competitive advantage in companies across the globe and in all industry sectors. This course examines the foundations of services marketing, which are necessary to create, promise, and deliver a successful, interactive customer experience. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 with a grade of "C" or better.

MKT 5340. Digital Marketing.

This course examines marketing strategies in the digital environment. It examines the latest technology and analytical tools used in e-marketing and e-commerce, including online advertising, mobile marketing, social media marketing, search marketing, email marketing, and web analytics. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 with a grade of "C" or better.

MKT 5341. Social Media Marketing and Analysis.

This course provides a conceptual foundation and practical approach for conducting social media analysis and developing a social media marketing plan and/or campaign will be presented. Students will gain hands-on experience using social media strategically to achieve desired marketing goals through a hands-on project. Students will also earn applicable digital marketing certifications. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 with a grade of "C" or better or instructor approval.

MKT 5345. Marketing Analytics.

This course is a study of the scientific approach that connects customer data and competitive information to drive marketing decision-making. The course explores customer data analysis techniques and their theoretical foundations that are applied to real world business problems. Students will learn software, conduct data analysis and communicate the results. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 and QMST 5334 both with grades of "C" or better or instructor approval.

MKT 5346. Contemporary Topics in Marketing Analytics.

This course covers contemporary topics in marketing analytics. Students will learn (1) concepts and methods in strategic marketing analytics, (2) analytical and mapping tools in geospatial data and information, (3) concepts and methods in Bayesian Networks, (4) Topic Analysis using big data in marketing, and (5) other emerging analytical tools and methods in marketing. Prerequisite: QMST 5334 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval.

MKT 5347. AI and Data Visualization for Marketing.

This course consists of applied training in foundational topics for artificial intelligence and data visualization. It covers both prediction as well as classification problems. While many technical aspects are covered, the main emphasis is on knowing how to apply a wide range of modern techniques to specific marketing problems. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 and QMST 5334 both with grades of "C" or better or instructor approval.

MKT 5348. Python for Marketing Analytics.

This course consists of learning Python and using this programming language for data analysis and visualization. This course will help to leverage the power of historical data and to develop models that project future trends. Python will be used for exploratory data analysis, market forecasting, customer segmentation, deep learning, social media analysis and analysis of marketing images and videos. Prerequisite: MKT 5321 and QMST 5334 both with grades of "C" or better or instructor approval.

MKT 5350. Strategic Marketing Analysis and Planning.

This course examines strategic marketing decision making through the analysis and interpretation of marketing intelligence, metrics, and dashboards. Topics will include data-driven decision making on marketing challenges pertaining to customers, brands, marketing mix decisions, online strategy and social media, market performance, and firm profitability. Prerequisite: MKT 5322 with a grade of "C" or better.

MKT 5395. Independent Study in Marketing.

Individual problems or topics will be designed and completed to emphasize selected areas of study in Marketing. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

MKT 5397I. Entrepreneurial Marketing.

Entrepreneurship involves the discovery, implementation, and pursuit of new business opportunities. Successful execution of an entrepreneurial idea requires an effective marketing plan and related skills. In this course, we will investigate how marketing concepts (product, price, promotion, place, people, processes, brand image, segmentation, targeting, positioning, quality perceptions) can facilitate entrepreneurs' realization of their ideas. A conceptual foundation and practical approach for developing an entrepreneurship-focused marketing plan will be discussed. Using a hands-on approach, students will gain skills and knowledge on the effective use of marketing concepts to achieve entrepreneurial goals. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

MKT 5398. Internship in Marketing.

Internship in marketing is an external employer supervised, experiential learning course that enables a student to integrate professional and graduate business coursework. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

MKT 5399A. Thesis.

This course represents a student’s initial thesis enrollments. No thesis credit is awarded until student has completed the thesis in Marketing Research and Analysis.

Limited attention has been given to the study of social marketing at the graduate level. Such a study not only reveals research interests and trends, but also provides insights into the level of academic evolution or maturity of the social marketing field. This paper aims to examine social marketing as the subject of master’s theses.

Design/methodology/approach

A search strategy found 266 social marketing-focused master’s theses completed from 1971 to 2015. These theses were analysed by host countries, institutions, disciplinary contexts and degree programmes for which they were submitted.

Only four theses were submitted from 1971-1980 and eight completed in 1981-1990. The number of theses increased to 35 in 1991-2000, 118 between 2001 and 2010 and 101 in the past five years (2011-2015). The USA was the leading producer of social marketing master’s theses, followed by Canada, Sweden, China, South Africa, the UK and Kenya. A majority of theses were housed in the disciplines of business, health and communication, and none of them was submitted for a Master of Social Marketing degree.

Originality/value

This is the first study that investigates master’s theses with an exclusive focus on social marketing. Implications for the evolution, learning and teaching of social marketing are provided.

You probably won’t be able to write a stellar research paper if you’re not interested in the topic. Sit down with your peers and advisors to discuss possible ideas. A research paper isn’t a descriptive essay which you can drag aimlessly. Your research paper needs to be based on factual data and that’s only possible if you’ve conducted thorough research. While jotting down points for your first draft, ensure your statements are supported with references or examples citing credible academicals and research work.

Don’t leave it till the last day

A lot of students tend to undermine the writing process and leave for the last few days. Bear in mind that you can’t possibly write your entire research paper overnight. In order to succeed, you’ll have to devote sufficient amount of time to research.

If you’re looking into graduate school, you may have read about graduate thesis requirements. In today’s blog, we’re giving you the rundown of what a graduate thesis is and whether you need to complete a thesis at Emerson . 

What is a graduate thesis?

A graduate thesis is a capstone project that demonstrates what a student has learned in graduate school. Some programs require students to conduct research for their thesis, while others may require a creative project. Regardless of what form it takes, a graduate thesis is a substantial project that showcases your ability to do independent, graduate-level work.

At Emerson, a graduate thesis can take multiple forms and might be optional, depending on your program. You may have the option to complete research, write a creative manuscript, or complete a film or other creative project as a graduate student at Emerson. 

Regardless of what format your thesis takes, students are expected to submit some form of academic or creative writing as part of their thesis. 

For a research thesis, this written submission will take the form of an academic research paper that presents your research question and findings. Programs at Emerson offering a research thesis track are:

  • Communication Disorders
  • Publishing and Writing
  • Theatre Education & Applied Theatre 

If your thesis is a piece of creative writing, such as a novel or collection of poems, your manuscript will count as the written portion of your thesis. You would complete this type of thesis in the following programs:

  • Creative Writing
  • Popular Fiction Writing and Publishing

For a film or creative project as a thesis, the written portion of your thesis would include an explanation of your work and what purpose it serves within your field of study. These are the programs in which you might complete this type of thesis:

  • Media Design
  • Film and Media Art
  • Writing for Film and Television
  • Publishing and Writing 
  • Theatre Education & Applied Theatre

Do I have to complete a thesis as part of graduate school?

It depends! Some of Emerson’s graduate programs don’t even offer thesis options, and many offer optional thesis opportunities. Only a handful of our programs require a thesis.

The following programs at Emerson require students to complete a graduate thesis:

  • Students complete a design book that includes a literature review, creative portfolio, media design for a specific organization’s need, and plan for continued work with the partner organization.
  • Students complete a film or multimedia installation project as their thesis. They must also write an academic paper about their project.
  • Students in this program complete at least 100 pages of a near-publishable novel. The novel can fall within any genre, from mystery to science fiction to romance. Along with the manuscript, students also write a 3-4 page synopsis of their thesis.
  • Students submit a near-publishable manuscript in one of three categories: fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction. Page requirements vary based upon the genre in which students are writing. 
  • Students in this program complete a screenwriting thesis project. Generally, students can choose between writing a feature length screenplay, two pilot screenplays, or one pilot screenplay for a mini-series plus Treatment for Series that includes a summary for the other episodes in the series. 
  • In the MA track of the Theatre Education & Applied Theatre program, students write a research paper about a topic that interests them. The research must be about a topic within the theatre education or applied theatre fields.
  • Students in the MFA track of this program complete a two-part thesis, consisting of a thesis project and thesis paper. The thesis project is an opportunity to gain experience in the field of theatre education and/or applied theatre. For example, students could direct a play or design and implement their own curriculum as a thesis project. Students can either complete the thesis project independently or collaborate with 1-2 other MFA students for the project. Each student also completes a thesis paper, which is a critical reflection on the thesis project.

Usually, the thesis advisor is a faculty member within the student’s graduate program who has interest in or experience with the student’s thesis topic. The process of finding a thesis advisor varies slightly from program to program, but the advisor will schedule periodic check-ins with their thesis students, offering advice and support as needed. A graduate thesis is the student’s responsibility, but students are not alone in the process!

What are the benefits of completing a graduate thesis?

Having a graduate thesis under your belt can help set you apart as someone who is capable of self-directing large projects or research. This is helpful when you’re looking for work after graduation, or if you’re applying to PhD programs or want to work in research. 

Additionally, completing a creative project for your graduate thesis is a means for students to get their work recognized. For students in our writing MFAs, the thesis requirement gives them a polished, near-publishable manuscript that they can use to query agents after graduation. Students completing a film or media art project for their thesis will leave graduate school with a professional-level piece of work to showcase. Whether it’s a manuscript, film, or other creative project, completing a creative thesis in graduate school gives students material they can use to establish themselves in their field after graduation. 

Lastly, a graduate thesis is an excellent way to grow and challenge yourself. Whether you’re writing a novel, completing a research study, or creating a marketing design for a company, a graduate thesis will challenge you to get outside of your comfort zone. You’ll try new things and learn through your mistakes, all of which will help you grow both personally and academically.

The major objective of any project/dissertation/thesis should be to make new discovery, to provide answers to unanswered questions, to proffer solution to problems, to evaluate or assess a project or programme. These are what inform the formulation of a project title (popularly referred to by students and some supervisors as project topic). In order for the project title to be complete and meaningful, it must have two important variables. These include the independent variable and the dependent variable. It has been observed that a lot of students cannot distinguish between these two variables in their research title or their project. This write up is therefore put together to assist students at the undergraduate and the post-graduate level to be able to write their project while minimizing methodological errors that characterizes research project as a result of lack of experience and expertise.

Abstract Purpose – This study aims to explore the relation between barriers and project sustainability by adding competencies in the mediating role. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses a mediation model including project sustainability as the dependent variable, sustainability barriers as the independent variable and project managers’ sustainability competencies as the mediator variable. Data were gathered from project managers, executive teams, and experts/advisors, working in Egyptian higher education enhancement projects (HEEPs) using self-administered questionnaires; the total number collected was 159, representing a response rate of 93.5 percent. Correlations and multiple regression analysis were employed to analyze the mediation impact of project manager’s sustainability competencies. Findings – The results indicate that sustainability competencies mediate the relation between barriers to sustainability and project sustainability. Sustainability competencies facilitate project achievements, and the sustainability and future expansion of these achievements. The analysis suggests that “continuous competencies” are extremely important, more so than “self-competencies”. Research limitations/implications – This study was undertaken at the level of the projects management unit in the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education, which manages the HEEPs. Practical implications – The analysis helps to understand the complex and nuanced nature of the projects; these are distinguished when the author considers the different practices. Originality/value – This study offers two principal contributions: first, a guideline for the development, measurement, and application of an uncommon concept of project sustainability; second, a concept of project managers’ sustainability competencies and barriers to sustainability.

  • While preparing your graduation thesis, you will work at Audi on a freelance basis. This brings the advantage that you are flexible enough, in alliance with your department and as required, to spend time outside the company. You can use this time, for example, to do research in your area of subject and to coordinate with your university.
  • You will receive 680 euros per month when you write your Bachelor’s thesis; when you write your Master’s or diploma thesis, you will receive 830 euros per month.
  • Before you apply for the announced topics for dissertations, you should check whether your professor is willing to supervise a practical dissertation. Supervision by the university must be guaranteed. During your graduation thesis you will be supervised by an employee from the department.
  • We are eager to receive applications from all over the world. For this purpose, however, you should be enrolled at a university and have a valid residence permit.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Conventional approaches, including intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Pearson correlations, are commonly used in analyses with clustered data. However, these conventional approaches are sensitive to extreme values and skewness. They also depend on the scale of the data and are not applicable to ordered categorical data. In this dissertation, we define population parameters for the rank ICC and between- and within-cluster Spearman rank correlations. These definitions are natural extensions of the conventional correlations to the rank scale. We show that the total Spearman rank correlation approximates a weighted sum of between- and within-cluster Spearman rank correlations, with weights determined by the rank ICCs of the two random variables. We also describe estimation and inference for these four rank-based correlations, conduct simulations to evaluate the performance of our estimators, and illustrate their use with real data examples. Furthermore, we apply the rank ICC in the design of clustered randomized controlled trials (RCTs), proposing unified and simple sample size calculations for cluster RCTs with skewed or ordinal outcomes. Our calculation involves inflating the sample size for an adequately powered individual RCT for an ordinal outcome with a design effect that incorporates the rank ICC. For continuous outcomes, our calculation sets the number of distinct ordinal levels to the sample size. We show that with continuous data, our calculations closely approximate more complicated sample size calculations based on clustered Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. We conduct simulations to evaluate our calculations’ performance and illustrate their use in the design of two cluster RCTs, one with a skewed continuous outcome and a non-inferiority trial with an irregularly distributed count outcome.
