The 10-Minute Presentation Topics Structure

As you might imagine, the hardest part of a 10-minute presentation is actually sticking to 10 minutes. None of your audience, organisers or fellow speakers will be pleased if your speech starts running over, but it’s hard to know how not to.

You might be tempted to cram as much information as possible, but doing so is just going to make for an overbearing presentation. Especially for this type of presentation , knowing what to leave out is as much of a skill as knowing what to put in, so try and follow the sample below for a perfectly structured presentation.

  • Introduction (1 slide) – Start your presentation with a quick question, fact or story relayed in a maximum of 2 minutes.
  • Body (3 slides) – Get into the nitty gritty of your talk with 3 slides. Audiences struggle to take home more than three ideas, so spacing all three out over the course of 6 or 7 minutes can be very effective.
  • Conclusion (1 slide) – End it all with a quick sum up of your 3 main points. You should be able to do this in 1 minute.

This 10-minute presentation example format contains a fairly conservative 5 slides, based on the famous 10-20-30 rule of presentations. In that rule, an ideal presentation is 10 slides in 20 minutes, meaning a 10-minute presentation would only require 5 slides.

10 Interview Presentation Ideas – 10-Minute Presentation Topics

More and more nowadays, recruiters are turning to quick-fire presentation as a means of testing a candidate’s skill and confidence in presenting something.

But, it’s more than that. Recruiters also want to learn about you as a person. They want to know what interests you, what makes you tick and what has changed your life in a profound way.

If you can nail any of these presentation topics in your interview, you’ll be starting next Monday!

  • Someone who inspires you – Pick a hero and talk about their background, their achievements, what you’ve learned from them and how it’s shaped you as a person.
  • The most eye-opening place you’ve ever been – A travelling experience or holiday that blew your mind. This might not necessarily be your favourite ever abroad experience, but it was one that made you realise something you had not thought about before.
  • An imagined problem – Set out a hypothetical problem at the company you’re applying for. Show the recruiters the steps you would take to eradicate that problem for good.
  • Something you’re proud of – We’ve all got achievements we’re proud of, and they do not necessarily work achievements. A quick 10-minute presentation on something you’ve done or made that has made you proud can reveal a lot of good stuff about you as a person.
  • The future of your field – Make some interesting, bold predictions about where you think the industry is heading in the upcoming years. Do research, get stats to back up your claims, and avoid being condescending.
  • A workflow you’ve fixed – Untidy workflows are rampant in many workplaces. If you’ve had a hand in turning something inefficient into a well-oiled machine, make a presentation about it!
  • A book you’d love to write – Assuming you were a top-class wordsmith, what’s the one topic you’d love to write a book about? Would it be fiction or non-fiction? What would the plot be? Who are the characters?
  • Your favourite work culture – Choose the job with the best work culture in terms of office atmosphere, rules, after-work activities and trips away. Explain what was so great about it; it might give your potential new boss a few ideas!
  • Pet peeves in the workplace – If you fancy yourself as a bit of a comedian, listing out the things that grind your gears in the office could be a good laugh and a nice bit of observational comedy for your recruiters. Make sure it’s actually funny though, as listening to a candidate moan for 10 minutes is not normally something that leads to recruitment.
  • The good and bad of remote working – Surely every office worker in the world has experience of remote working. Pry open your own experiences and discuss whether or not they’ve been for the better or for, the worse.

give 10 minute presentation

Presentations are an interesting way to introduce a new topic, perspective, or study to your audience. 10-minute presentations serve the same purpose but they come with a specified restriction on time.

When we see the word presentation, we instantly think of PPTs and while PPTs are used in many cases, some presentations are completely oral as well.

The number of speakers is another variable while presenting. It can be done individually like in the case of a job interview presentation or in a group setting like in the case of a college assignment.

How long should a 10-minute presentation be?

Ideally, for 10-minute presentations, you should focus on adding 5-10 effective, crisp slides. And a speech of about 1000-2000 words should be enough to complete the presentation within 10 minutes.

However, there are no set rules while making a presentation which means that you are free to increase or decrease the number of slides in your presentation depending upon your pace of presenting.

Now when we talk about the pace of presenting, we mean the number of words you can speak in an understandable manner per minute. So, if you can speak 100-120 words per minute (adding the usual pauses), then a 1000–1200-word speech would be enough for your 10-minute presentation.

While we cannot point out an exact word count specifically catered for you in this blog, we can surely suggest you take up any piece of long article and go on reading it out loud while taking necessary pauses and timing it. It might give you an idea of your speed which in turn would help you gauge the perfect word count for your presentation.

Another factor that would define the way you present your topic is whether you are presenting it individually or in a group.

Individual Presentations

A man presenting his topic.

In Individual presentations, you are the one to shoulder your entire presentation’s responsibility. You can make use of effective PowerPoint presentation skills or use props to keep the audience engaged and interested in your presentation.

Further, it becomes extremely important for you to have sufficient knowledge about your topic, as in case of any doubts you are the only one to be questioned by the audience members.

Group Presentations

A group of two college students presenting to a class full of students.

On the other hand, in group presentations, the responsibility to carry out an effective and good presentation falls on all group members. This calls for a lot of coordination which would require a ton of practice.

In groups, you can make use of skits to explain a certain phenomenon. Or maybe the use of coordinated props per speaker can also make your presentations more eye-catchy.

Further, involving your entire group to present rather than just 2 people doing it with beautifully placed content, will easily stand out to the audience.

The placement of your content could be in a para format wherein one person speaks a para followed by another one. Or one person can explain one subtopic followed by another; whatever suits best for your group.

A beautiful example of group presentations is the one by The minimalists .

It is a beautiful presentation because we see that while one person is speaking, the other enacts what is being said, thus making it an interesting presentation involving both speakers.

Tips for your 10-minute presentations

1. avoid information overload.

While it can be very tempting to add all the relevant information in your presentation, limiting it will turn out to be one of the best decisions taken by any presenter.

The reason is very simple, every individual has a very limited attention span and capacity to take in new information . 10-minute presentations exceed the average duration of attention span among humans which is 7 minutes.

If you bombard them with tons of information, chances are that they might feel exhausted and detached from your topic and presentation altogether.

2. Avoid reading from your slides

We know you might have heard this a gazillion times but here we are to say it again because it is very important. Avoid reading from your slides. As it might indicate your lack of understanding of the topic . It can also end up being a little boring for the audience to listen to something present in front of them that they can easily read themselves.

3. Give your audience an incentive to listen to you

It is always better to assume that your audience is not innately motivated to listen to your presentation and hence to give them a reason why listening to your presentation would be worth it.

Are you planning on discussing a new perspective on a widely-spoken topic? Are you trying to introduce new findings? Is your presentation trying to motivate the audience?

Whatever goal you wish to achieve through your presentation, make it known to the audience.

4. Try to offer something new

The very essence of presentations is to offer some new idea, perspective, or study to your audience. This holds especially true when your presentation is on a generic or widely-spoken topic like climate change.

5. Avoid exceeding the time limit

This goes without saying, avoid exceeding your time limit. If you know you have been given 10 minutes, either finish it by the time it hits the limit or better yet, finish it before time.

Everyone would appreciate you for finishing your presentation before time for sure.

6. Make it easy to understand

Another point that goes without saying is to make your content very easy for everyone in the audience to understand.

Try to tweak your presentation in a manner that is convenient for the youngest and the least experienced member to understand easily.  For if your presentation doesn’t reach your audience, it might not fulfill its very purpose.

Structuring 10-minute presentations

Just like we structure any speech, with a beginning, a middle, and an end, structuring your presentation follows a similar pattern.

In the initial few minutes or even seconds of your presentation, the audience might have decided whether they should listen to your presentation or will it be more fruitful to dive deep into their thoughts.

This is the reason why starting 10-minute presentations on a strong foot is emphasized so much. But again, there is no need to stress out about it.

Here are a few tips on how you can start your presentation:

1. Provocative statements

Provocative statements are the ones that try to shake some strongly held views of the audience. Reggie Rivers make use of a provocative statement in his TED talk that might help you understand its use better.

He begins by saying

If you want to achieve your goals, don’t focus on them.

The statement clearly goes against a belief we have grown up with; the idea that we should chase and focus on our goals in order to achieve them.

2. Hypothetical scenario

Starting with a hypothetical scenario includes the use of words like “Imagine” or “what if.” It gives your audience a chance to put themselves in a situation that you are about to address in your presentation.

An example of the same is given below.

Imagine you are going out for a drive with your friends. It is a little late and the roads are wet from the heavy shower that had surrendered only a few minutes ago. You are all singing and laughing. But then you look to your left only to realize two giant lights come close to you at lightning speed and you know at that moment you are going to die. That you are going to die in that crash. Then you hear a screech and *pause* the truck halts 5 cm from your car. That is exactly what someone with anxiety feels but unlike you, it doesn’t end within a few minutes; it persists for hours or even days.

3. Hard-hitting questions

While questions are one of the most widely used ways to open any speech or presentation, the task here is to open with a hard-hitting question.

A question that your audience probably doesn’t have an answer to, which you plan on providing them through your presentation.

Some examples of these would be:

  • Is there anyone here who can give me the exact amount of microplastics they consumed during this week?
  • Did you know that with the advancement in technology, there is a possibility that the organ transplanted to you in 20 years would not be from another human but from an animal?

Starting your presentation with props is the easiest and most creative way to start a presentation. The reason why it is creative is that you can use absolutely anything as a prop. Be it a plastic bottle, a jar full of waste, or even some hula hoops.

Once you have introduced yourself and your topic, you can go on to the next step: the main content of your presentation.

However, it isn’t just about presenting your points but how you present them that we will take a look into.  Presenting your topic in a more structured manner makes it easier for your audience to stay in tune with your presentation.

One of the formatting ways is the 3-pointer format . The idea behind using a 3-pointer structure is to divide your main content into 3 huge chunks or points. And while you are free to add more points, having 3 points makes it a tad bit easier to recall the information and to maintain a flow among the listeners.

An example of using a three-pointer structure is this 5 slide presentation by Ashley Stahl where she talks about 3 key questions to unlock your authentic careers.

  • What are you good at?
  • What do people tell me I am good at?
  • What is holding you back?

The closing remarks like the opening lines are quite important.

There are several ways in which you can close your presentation. But it takes more than a mere thank you to make it an effective closing remark for your presentation.

A few ways in which you can close 10-minute presentations are:

1. Fitting remark

A fitting remark or in simple terms a summary is where you revise what you just spoke in a couple of lines. It is better to keep it as short as possible as 10-minute presentations don’t give you enough tie to elaborate.

2. Calling for action

You can end your speech by instilling a sense of action and purpose among the audience members to make a difference. An amazing example of this is the speech by Leonardo DiCaprio. While it is a speech, you can observe his way of delivering the last couple of lines and inculcate the same in your presentation.

For more ways in which you can close your presentation check out our video on 5 Powerful Speech Closing Remarks for your next Presentation.

Designing 10-minute presentations

Designing your PowerPoint is as important as presenting your topic confidently and effectively.

A few dos and don’ts of designing your PPTs are:

Some amazing websites that will help you in making effective and aesthetically pleasing presentations are canva , Prezi , and more.

Best PowerPoint presentations on TED

Some of the most innovative PowerPoint presentations we came across on Ted were the ones given by Tim Burton and Adam Grant.

1. Tim Burton

I can not emphasize how absolutely wonderful the Presentation by Tim is. A mix of information with tons of humor coupled with very entertaining visuals.

His confidence makes the presentation quite engaging and interesting to watch.

2. Adam Grant

Adam Grant like Tim Burton has made use of animated cartoons to make the statistical data quite entertaining. However, the way he presents his topic is a little different.

His presentation is filled with images and cartoons . When he states quantitative data, the font size and color are something that must be taken a look into. Further, the language that he includes in his PPT is very candid and informal.

Delivering 10-minute presentations

While you are trying to make your content crisp, 10 minutes may seem way too little; But when it comes to presenting it and speaking, 10 minutes is not that short of a time.

There are a few things that you can do so as to deliver your presentation in its most effective way.

1. Practice your presentation in chunks.

Chunks are the division of your main content into small parts. 5-to-9 chunks are easy to remember.

We are not encouraging you to memorize or rote learn your presentation. However, it is important to remember the flow in which you are supposed to be presenting. And for this dividing, your presentation into chunks to practice can help navigate you through your entire presentation.

This also raises the question that,

How Long Should You Practice for a Presentation?

It is advisable to practice your presentation at least 3 times and a maximum of 10-12 times . But as the old saying goes “Practice makes a man perfect,” you can practice as long as you feel you have perfected your presentation.

If you are looking for a specific time duration for which you should practice then, for a 10-minute presentation, 30 minutes to about An hour and a half should suffice.

For some amazing tips on how you can rehearse your presentations, check out 13 Tips For Rehearsing A Presentation .

2. Add a story or share a personal experience

Stories are a very binding way to let your point across. It adds a personal touch, especially if you are sharing your personal experience. It also gives the audience a chance to understand where you come from and maybe even relate to you.

The TED by Jarret J. Krosoczka is a wonderful presentation where he illustrates his story while talking about it to the audience.

The creative bend makes it a presentation worth remembering, don’t you think?

3. Engage the audience.

While it isn’t mandatory for you to add elements that would ensure that the audience stays engaged, adding it will only help in enhancing your and your audience’s experience (if time permits).

You can add a quiz , or a small game like spot a difference between the two pictures. you can also ask a question and take a poll by asking the audience members who agree to raise their hands.

4. Add humor to your presentations

Humor can be your friend or your enemy while presenting a topic. If you get it right, it can make your presentation an unforgettable one. At the same time, if you end up making jokes that the audience might not find funny or worst even derogatory, It may land you in some trouble.

One of the funniest and most energy-filled presentations I have come across was the one by Alexis Nikole Nelson and her take on Veganism. The way in which she makes use of the prop is another thing you must take a look into.

Add elements of credibility

Elements of credibility include stating facts and figures . You can also quote some renowned personalities . All these things would build the confidence of the audience in your presentation. It also works best to give a reality check. How do you ask?

Simple, when you state figures, you give them a clear picture of the situation.

An example of this is the use of statistics used by Randy Palisoc in his Ted talk “Math isn’t hard, it’s a language.”

26%..Thats is the percentage of US 12 graders who are proficient in math

Famous 10-Minute Presentations

1. bill gates.

We might have all heard about Bill Gates and his talks or speeches on Climate Change. But this presentation was a little different.

Here, Bill Gates goes on to explain how teachers have not been receiving sufficient feedback which could’ve led to drastic changes in their teaching patterns.

He explains the wide disparity in feedback given to teachers through charts , thus providing a way to easily compare and evaluate one’s country’s performance to that of others.

His bidding statement ends on a positive note as it is filled with optimism. He says,

I am excited about the opportunity to give all our teachers the support they want and deserve. I hope you are too.

2. Vishaan Chakrabarti

Renowned Architect Vishaan Chakrabarti gives an insight into the need for sustainable housing to provide a roof over the head of additional 3 billion people who are expected to be born by 2100.

The presentation is particularly interesting for the way in which he has used the visuals and animations . The language is kept simple which makes it easy to understand even if you have no degree in architecture.

10-Minute presentation sample

Presentation on Sustainable Fashion

I want you to imagine the amount of water you drink in a day. Now imagine and tell me if you can do the math, how much water would you have consumed in 3 years?

Let me help you.

2720 liters of water.

Now how would you feel if I tell you that this also equal to the amount of water that went into making the t-shirt you quite stunningly adorn right now?

*Imitates mind being blown*

With a 4-fold increase in the production of clothes over the last 20 years, we cannot even imagine the extent to which it has penetrated the pollution index across the world. Every year, fast fashion brands release several micro collections against the ideal 2. So if you ever wondered how the store has a very different collection every time you step into H&M or Zara, you know now. In fact, In the US per person, approximately 35 kgs of textile waste are generated every year.

If this wasn’t enough, the extent of water pollution caused by Fast fashion is beyond imaginable. 22,000 toxic waste is released into rivers by tanneries in Bangladesh,

Every. Single. Day.

So, what is the most immediate action that you can take to switch to more sustainable styling?

I am going to introduce a mantra that has worked wonders for me when I felt overwhelmed about switching to sustainable fashion. The 4 Rs and No it isn’t Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

The 4 Rs for sustainable fashion are

Reduce your consumption of clothes. Has it ever happened that you end up buying a shirt only to realize you don’t a perfect pair of pants to wear with it? Or bought something that you found super cute but never touched once you got home? It’s okay! Don’t feel guilty, I have done that too.

But that can be avoided. A simple method is to ask yourself “Do I need this Now?” and “Will I be able to use it in the long run?” The answer to the second question will immediately direct you away from fast fashion brands that offer cheap quality clothing at a very affordable rate.

If the clothes you own can be repaired in any way, it is better to do that than jump on to buy a new one. There were many times when I repaired or redesigned my outfits. For example. this one time when I slipped in my yard and tore my jeans a little from the knee area. Guess the ground was desperate for me to own another pair of ripped jeans and so I did exactly that. The other time a friend of mine, an amazing artist got some splashes of paint on her pants, Any guess what we did with those pants?

Exactly! Splashed more paint over it. Now I know it may sound bizarre but that was a time when that was in trend.

The third option is to Resell your stuff or give it to someone else.

This is where our popular thrift stores come into the picture. You’ve got a piece of clothing that you are never going to wear? Why let it take up the space in your closet when you can easily make money out of it and get rid of it at the same time. But if you are more altruistic, you can even consider donating your not-so-frequently used clothes to those who need them. And I know for a fact that every brown person sitting here is a pro at both lending and receiving hand-me-downs.

Lastly and the most important of all is, to rethink your consumption of fashion. It is 2022. Some brands have dedicated their entire efforts to providing you with sustainable alternatives. You can choose to buy consciously.

For instance, Adidas’s future craft loop edition shoes are one such example of big brands trying to do their part in this battle of saving our planet from our species. Further, there are brands like Baggit that use vegan leather for all their products.

Then there are completely sustainable brands like Eco India that use the clothes thrown into landfills to make fashion statements that are both iconic as well as sustainable.

While I can talk about this for as long as my voice doesn’t give in, I guess I should cut it short.

Reduce, Repair, Resell and Rethink what you can do to make the change towards a healthier fashion choice. After all the industry thrives upon you and your impulsiveness, try not to give in to it.

So the idea is simple. Maintain your style but not at the cost of the planet.

Final Thoughts

Presentations are an effective mode of presenting your topic with creativity.

10-minute presentations however come with a restriction on time which makes it important to focus on crunching the information you plan to add and thus keeping it short.

The use of visuals can be effective in carrying out successful presentations, be it PPTs or props.

Sharing personal experiences, humor, or any other element that makes your presentation stand out would enhance your presentation and make it easier for the audience to recall the information shared by you.

Lastly, there is no right or wrong way of presenting.

The only way we know is to enjoy your presentation just as much as you would want the audience to enjoy listening to it.

90 Topic Ideas for a 10-Minute Presentation

10-Minute Presentation

Most of us have to go through the fear of public speaking. Whether you are a student, teacher, researcher, or professional in your respective fields, you should be full of presentation topics to prepare a stunning presentation. To improve your  public speaking skills , it is essential to choose the right topic that hits the right chord with your audience in the early 10 minutes.

Going through a zillion topics could be overwhelming a bit. It can pose a real challenge and may take a lot of time for you to choose.

Bonus Tip:  Pick a presentation idea that you are passionate about and is the centre of your interest. If you are aware of your topic’s basics, you can present it in many different ways, such as infographics, pictures, and supported by facts and graphs.

No matter how crazily exceptional skills you have but if the fear of public speaking gets triggers in front of the public, then the set of skills are of no use to improve that boost up your confidence level. After doing so, another step is to refurbish your skills according to your newly gained confidence. While delivering a  presentation topic , keep these factors in your mind –

100 + short 3-10 minute how to speech ideas

Before you settle on a topic, please don't overlook demonstrating a skill or a process you regard as commonplace.

If we already know how to do something competently, we have an understandable tendency to dismiss whatever it is as far too simple, and too ordinary to turn it into a demonstration speech.

And yet, that assumption can be so wrong.

There are audiences who will want to know how to do some of the things we do so efficiently and easily, that we forget we had to learn how to do them in the first place!  Many of those things are on this list.

For instance, a group of people who don’t spend a lot of time online, could find why and how to set up a safe password valuable knowledge to have. It might stop them from being hacked!

Likewise teaching people who intend to explore the great outdoors, and haven't had much prior experience, how to use a portable gas stove safely is extremely useful.

Or showing parents of children with long hair how to plait it. That will save a lot of time and tears when it comes to brushing.

And I'll always be grateful to the person who showed me how to give medicine to my beloved cat, without being scratched to bits!

Think about your audience. What would be useful for them to know? Sharing something of real benefit and value will help keep them actively interested.  *

To be really effective you'll want to plan and prepare your 'how-to' speech thoroughly - even if you know the subject inside out!

Demonstration speeches that haven't been thought through and practiced carefully have a nasty habit of suddenly sliding sideways super-fast. Then what you want to happen and what actually does are miles apart - two quite different things.

To avoid that read  planning, preparation & delivery of your demonstration speech .

give 10 minute presentation

The 10-minute presentation

give 10 minute presentation

Ten minutes is more than enough time in which to give a compelling and effective presentation.

A lot of detailed information can be presented in ten minutes without the presentation dragging on and losing the audience’s attention. Structuring the presentation correctly is still vitally important. No one likes to be waffled at.

A basic four-section structure for your 10-minute presentation could be something like this:

1. Introduction. Tell the audience a little about yourself, briefly, and perhaps include a slide with your name and job title on as you do so.

It is also important to grab the audience’s attention during your introduction. Tell them an interesting story, or a joke, or quote some research with relevant findings.

2. With ten minutes to fill it is possible to make several main points, supported by slides or visual aids, and reinforced with details to form a compelling argument or overview of the subject matter.

Succinctly run through the points you intend to make, simplifying them to suit the audience and enable them to understand without difficulty. Trying to give too much information will overload and confuse the audience. Instead, cover a few main points well and thoroughly explain anything that might be hard to understand.

3. Use the ‘rule of three’ to explain your points. This is a memorable structure for delivering information in blocks of three items. For example, you might consider illustrating your presentation with three case studies from the real world, or three practical examples of your argument in action.

4. Finish with something that suitably rounds off your presentation. Due to the recency effect, the end of your presentation is likely to be one of the most memorable parts for most people in the audience. Make it count with a sales call-to-action, or details of a future opportunity, a web address for further contact, or even just a final summary of your points.

Don’t try to learn your presentation word-for-word

A lot of words can be said in ten minutes. Learning the entire presentation off by heart is difficult and time consuming. Instead, aim to learn the outline and key facts of each point you wish to make, and work out cues to remind yourself when to change slides.

Write out reminders on cue cards to prompt your memory, but don’t try to read your presentation entirely from paper. With practice, it will become easier to speak continuously for ten minutes without having to refer to your cue cards too often. The presentation will also flow far more smoothly.

Try to tell a story

Ten minutes can seem like a long time, and it is easy to lose the thread of your presentation. To avoid this, try to imagine your presentation as a story. All stories have a beginning, middle and end, and this can be used to keep your presentation coherent and focused. What story are you trying to tell the audience? Try to remember this if you start to go off-topic during the presentation.

Focus on the whole audience

It is often tempting to pick out an individual member of the audience and give the presentation as if you were speaking only to him or her. This can be effective over a short time, but over ten minutes, it would be hard to maintain. Instead, spread your eye contact across the whole audience, looking at different people periodically. No one likes to be stared at, but making eye contact is important.

Similarly, if you feel nervous during the presentation don’t drop your eyes to look down at your lectern or, even worse, the floor. Instead, take a breath, smile, pause momentarily if you need to, and continue.

Tips for a 10-minute presentation

Prioritise.   Select.  In a 10-minute talk, you can hope to convey one key idea.  So:  what’s your ‘take-away message’?

Think of a 10-minute talk as an extended abstract:  your aim is to convey the unique character of your research, with just enough detail so that the audience can grasp the big picture and understand what distinguishes your research from other related work.

Plan the time:

If the talk is 10 minutes, then you can’t spend 5 of them on the introduction.  Associate time with important points – points essential to convey the character and shape of your research, points important to your line of reasoning, points concerning the implications of your research, and so on.

It is essential to cover enough of the design and structure of your research for the audience to grasp its character.  So, your talk should include the classic key ingredients:

1.  Research question :  including what motivates you to address it, and why an answer will be important.

2.  Context :   what is already known, what the issues are, what other approaches have been tried or are being tried – in brief.

3.  Your research design :   what you’re doing, what evidence you expect to find.

4.  Findings:    what evidence you have produced so far.

5.  Take-away message:   what you want the audience to remember about your research.

You’ll need balance among these elements:  don’t sacrifice the evidence, or your take-away message won’t be convincing.  Don’t short-change the context, or the research choices may not make sense.  Don’t forget to motivate the question, or the audience might wonder why you’re bothering.  And so on.

Start by giving a minute to each of the five – and then allocating the remaining five minutes to the elements that are most important to you to convey.  Note the time allocation on your running notes or script (whatever you use to guide yourself during your talk).

Plan the slides:

At 1 slide per minute, you need to contain your key points in 10 slides or so.  That doesn’t mean squeezing the material from 20 slides into 10; it means selecting key points and crucial material.  Remember:  if the audience is too busy trying to read your slides, then people won’t be listening to your words.  The purpose of the slides is to focus attention and reinforce key points.  If you have important supporting material (e.g., data, analyses) that won’t fit into the talk, keep them to hand in case they’ll help you answer questions.

Don’t just guess.  Make sure you’ve timed yourself giving the talk in a normal delivery pace at least once.  For example, give the talk to some friends or colleagues, and time it.

10 tips for the 10-minute conference presentation

July 21, 2016

By Elizabeth Saewyc

You’ve spent months on your research, but have only 10 minutes to present it to the world. Yikes! But, fear not! There are some easy, practical ways to make it memorable.

In a striking back-to-back comparison showcased in the video below, I give a standard 10-minute research talk riddled with features that characterize too many dry scientific presentations. You’ll nod your head as you recognize them from your own and colleagues’ past efforts. Then watch, as I transform the same material in a subsequent presentation that showcases the potential of strong science communication to bring research alive with a little preparation. And no, we’re not talking about animating your slide deck. This is about the power of words to truly communicate research.

RESEARCH TOOLBOX; 10 Tips for a Dynamic 10-Minute Conference Presentation from UBC Nursing .

My top 10 tips are:

  • Aside from the “I have nothing to disclose” statement, don’t start by thanking by name all the people on your first slide (your co-authors). Instead, say good morning or good afternoon, whichever is relevant, then start your presentation with a bit of dramatic statement – either the scope of the issue, something people don’t normally think of, something that sounds contrary to what people normally believe but hints at your results, or at least makes it clear why this research was needed. It’s a way of being compelling and catching attention, it projects confidence and draws people in. Not humour, though, that’s hard to pull off.
  • The slides should illustrate your presentation points, not be your presentation. They should have no more than 3-4 points per slide, in phrases, not sentences, and no more than two lines per point (preferably one). Use bar charts or graphs or pictures where you can, with limited words.
  • Don’t read the slides, make the points with slightly different words, and expand on them a bit.
  • Speak slowly, way, way slower than you think you need to – we will always talk faster during a public speaking situation, so it’s important to speak slowly and clearly, especially since there will be people who have English as a second language in the audience, and are likely jet-lagged. Most of us speak at 120 words a minute, so that means, for a 10 minute presentation 1200 words max. Write out your script so that you have exactly those many words—the minute you digress, you run over time.
  • Don’t be afraid to make a short statement with a bar chart or table on the slide, like “As you can see from this table, Southeast Asian girls reported poorer mental health than boys,” and then fall silent for a bit, letting people absorb the info before you switch to the next slide (this can heighten the drama/attention, and makes you look very polished and confident–even if you’re counting in your head how long to wait before you switch the slide and speak again!).
  • Never, ever say, “okay, I know you can’t read this, but…” If it’s unreadable, too many lines, too small font, or too busy a table or figure, do not include it . Come up with a different way to convey the key points, because the minute you apologize for your slide, you’ve lost them.
  • Avoid swooping transitions, nifty animations, cutesy cartoon graphics, and wild shifts of colour or font; anything that might make your audience seasick or dizzy won’t win you respect or attention.
  • Remember to put in the “so what?” conclusion, or a concrete couple of clinical implications–or go back to your dramatic opening statement and bring it into the ending. If you’ve paced yourself with your 1200 words or fewer, you’ll have time to give the final punchline of what we should do now, or what we know now, because of this work.
  • Say thank you! But don’t say, “I’d like to thank my supervisor, my committee, my colleagues, my family, my carpool, my dog…” and don’t mention the funding source, even if it’s listed on your last slide as an acknowledgment. Leave it for people to read during questions.
  • Wear something bright red–a scarf, a tie, a blouse, a pocket handkerchief, a jacket, a dress; it draws the eye, enhances their alertness, and will help people find you afterwards to tell you what a fabulous job you did on your presentation, and what they liked about your study, or ask another question about it.

The perfect ten minute presentation

>     Download pdf

In ten minutes, you can say a lot. What you say depends on

  • the purpose of the presentation and the need to meet the remit of the invitation; however, there is still time and scope to include the things you want to say
  • the audience – their knowledge of, and interest in, the subject; are they your target market or fellow networker?

In order to be interesting, the talk has to be original, rather than structured according to what a training course tells you. However, there are some basic elements which must be there.

Purpose and approach

As usual, if your purpose is to sell to the audience, it will be immediately detected and resented. Even people who have asked to be sold to shouldn’t be sold to (how do you know what to sell them?). Even a series of illustrations of how good you are, dressed up as case histories of actual clients, will be perceived as selling, if that is your intention. People subconsciously pick up other people’s intentions, even if communicated subconsciously. Just because you’re unaware of it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Referring back to the section on purpose and outcomes, a more useful purpose would be to give the audience an entertaining and informative talk such that the outcome is that they are more willing to talk you up with people they know.

The most important components of a ten minute presentation are stories. People need stories to allow them to empathise with people other than you – ie, people like themselves. Empathy is a feeling process and you want the audience to be in their feelings because people in their feelings are much more receptive.  People learn when they have an experience, and, for want of anything better, a good story is an experience.

Talk about yourself

A (small) bit about your background, yes. But crucially:

  • why you do what you do
  • what you get from it
  • what gives you a buzz about it.

Don’t forget a story (eg, how you came to work for/set up the company).

Talk about how your business helps its clients, not about the services it provides

Include a statement of how the business helps its clients, tailored to the needs of the audience (see the section ‘Talking about what your business does’). But make sure this statement, and the stories, are positioned so they are talking about how the business helps the client resolve its problem, not about what services the business provides.

People do not buy benefits. They buy solutions to their problems. I have a problem in that, if I attempt to do my tax return, it will be inaccurate and take a lot of time. Potential trouble with HMRC is on the cards. So I pay an accountant to do it. I’m not buying accountancy services, for the sake of having them, I’m buying the solution to my problem.

People are often recommended to say why their business is ‘unique’. I’m not sure this is really necessary but, if you want to say it, it would be good to say that, at least, the business is unusual in that it understands the point about businesses solving problems, not selling benefits.

Here stories are easy – and essential. Talk about clients. If you don’t have any, talk about other people’s clients (“I know a coach who had a client who…”). Show how real clients’ issues were resolved by your business’s intervention (preserve anonymity, of course).

The simplest structure is

  • Introduction
  • Conclusion.

The Introduction should have something surprising, thought-provoking, funny, or otherwise attention grabbing. Preferably this should be relevant to the rest of the presentation.

The Content can be divided into a number of sections – different aspects of the business, or just different stories

Conclusion. You can try for a ‘call to action’ if you think the audience will do something, but I would avoid it unless you’re confident they will. Better to simply recapitulate – briefly – the main points you’ve made in the Content.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

  • Guy Kawasaki

give 10 minute presentation

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

The 20-minute presentation checklist.

If you’ve been given only 20 minutes, 10 minutes, or even 5 minutes to make your point, you don’t need to jam everything you ever learned into that precious time.  It won’t make you look smarter. Let’s take a look at what’s possible.  Below are three TED Talks that I find to be amazing examples of short presentations.

How many slides should be in a 20 minute presentation?

There is a lot of advice about slides and it usually starts with a rule about what you should or shouldn’t do. My experience tells me that people often rely too heavily on slides. Don’t think of your slides as your content.

20-minute Presentation Example

Take a look at this example from a compelling presentation by Jane McGonigal titled The Game That Can Give You 10 Extra Years Of Life .

Did Jane make her point? Just like in her presentation, you should think about your slides as your co-facilitator.

Capture 10 4 2021 Monday 8.09.03 PM 0

In 2018 ATD published my thoughts on this in a booklet called PowerPoint: Your Co-Facilitator . When you design your slides, ask yourself how many times you want your audience looking at the slides and not listening to you? Years ago, my company, Endurance Learning , worked with a manufacturing company and reduced their slide deck from hundreds to 13 for a day and a half training session. This training program continued to be successfully implemented for years with 13 slides. The number isn’t as important as what work the slides do for you.

How many slides should you have in a 10 minute presentation?

Shorter presentations come with new challenges. In a 10 minute presentation, you should be very careful. Conventional wisdom would say that you can have roughly 5 slides at 2 minutes each. Just like when you had to edit your essay down from 3 pages to 1, a shorter presentation will challenge you to only show the slides that matter. Even the slightest change of pace or adjustment to your talking points could have you leaving slides on the proverbial cutting room floor.

10-minute Presentation Example

Take a look at this compelling presentation by Marla Spivak: Why Bees Are Disappearing.

How many slides should you have in a 5 minute presentation?

Now we’re talking! You may have gotten the sense above that the rules aren’t as important as why you’re using the slides. When you get to a 5 minute presentation (and maybe even on the 20 and 10 minute presentations), you should ask yourself why you are using slides.

5-minute Presentation Example

How important are slides in this 5-minute presentation by William Kamkwamba titled How I Harnessed The Wind ?

There are, of course, examples where you can take a short presentation with rapid-fire slides. I talked about Pecha Kucha before and showed how you can make it incredibly fun and engaging. That said, Pecha Kucha is a very specific format that is often used at events where a group of people are presenting in this format. For your 5 minute presentation, think about what you want to achieve and ask yourself if slides will be a critical part of supporting that message.

Designing Slides for Short Presentations

How can you emulate great short presentations the next time you’re asked to make a short presentation – in a staff meeting or in a public symposium?  Try incorporating the following elements:

  • Give Your Presentation a Compelling Title : Who doesn’t want to know more just by reading the title?
  • Find a Hook : Within the first minute, there’s a reason for me to pay attention – whether it’s looking at photos of an empty grocery store or how I can increase my lifespan. There’s something in these presentations for me .
  • Remove Physical Barrier and Crutches : There’s no podium between the speaker and the audience. The speaker just feels more accessible.
  • Focus on Making Attractive Visual Aids : Though PowerPoint is used, there’s not a single template. There are no bullet points. The slides have vivid, dramatic images and few words. Even statistics and scientific evidence is easy to digest. If you want to learn more consider checking out the podcast with Connie Malamed about visual design . In it she says, “When the visual design is poor, when there’s a lot of extraneous information, when things aren’t aligned, when it’s sloppy, it detracts from the learning. It makes it harder for people to visually process the screen or the slide in terms of e-learning and in terms of job aids or manuals, books, it’s the same story.”
  • Encourage Active Listening : The Jane McGonigal presentation especially uses this strategy by giving the audience an assignment at the beginning (“I want you to think about how you’ll spend your extra minutes and hours of life”). She also intersperses questions throughout, inviting the audience to think for a moment before she proceeds. You should also check out the discussion with Melissa Marshall about creating engaging technical presentations . In it, she says that “… the concept of being a tour guide for the slide is even more important than it’s ever been, which is to very methodically walk people through what they should be noticing, what’s important about it.”
  • Provide Concrete, Real-life Examples : We could have been exposed to the numbers of people without power in Malawi or mind-numbing charts on the science behind gaming, but the presenters instead chose to share stories and make an emotional connection. Since we live in the real world (and not in theory or in books), presentations are more gripping when they’re about what we do and how the numbers or the theories actually impact us.
  • Share Your Passion : Each presenter shared their passion through their obvious preparation, their voice intonations and they allowed their personalities to show. They’re not just smart, but they care about both their topic and their audience.
  • Tie It All Together : The speakers didn’t simply end by saying “thank you.” Their thank-you to the audience came in the form of a brief summary, wrap-up and call to action.

The next time you have a chance to present, don’t just do what’s easy. Use some of these tips and deliver a meaningful presentation!

What inspiration have you gotten from TED talks? Have you used this formula to sharpen your 20-minute, 10-minute or 5-minute presentation?

  • Prepare, prepare, prepare. Make an outline or some note cards. Practice. You will not do better if you wing it. Dr. Misner puts in 40 hours preparing to give a one-hour talk. Choreograph it.
  • Be specific and talk about the things you know best. You don’t have to tell the audience everything, but pick a specific example.
  • Use handouts, visuals, props, or slides . Look at the book Presentation Zen for inspiration.
  • Remember, you’re the expert. It’s your field and your opportunity to shine.
  • Be creative. Find a way to communicate that makes you comfortable.
  • It’s okay to be nervous.

Priscilla: Hello everyone and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast brought to you by NetworkingNow.com, which is the leading site on the net for networking downloadables. I am Priscilla Rice, and I am coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, CA. I am joined on the phone today by the Founder and Chairman of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello Ivan. How are you and where are you?

Ivan: Hey, I am finally back from my trip throughout Europe visiting directors and members of BNI. I had the opportunity to talk to literally thousands of directors and members. It was an incredible visit and I want to thank everyone for their hospitality. It’s truly been amazing. I am back in the US. I am in Austin this week.

You know, I mention this every now and then, Priscilla. You ask where I am and I like that because I want members to know that I am out there visiting. I am not in some big ivory tower. I am just doing what I do. I am doing it out in the field and meeting members all over the world.

Priscilla: That’s great. Wow. So you are going to teach us a little bit about doing a great featured presentation?

Ivan: Yes. You know, a lot of chapters call it the 10 minute talk or 10 minute presentation, but we’re transitioning that because as chapters are getting bigger and bigger- out average chapter size is going up. It’s not 10 minutes in every chapter. It’s really more a featured presenter for a chapter, a featured speaker.

So I want to talk about that. Let’s say you are going to be the speaker next week in your chapter. What are some things to consider?

First of all, almost every general survey I have seen ranks public speaking worse than dying. It’s amazing. What is incredible, though, is in BNI, I have heard so many say that they have become a better speaker and they can represent their business much more effectively than before they joined BNI.

But doing the longer presentation takes a little more preparation. So I am going to give you a few tips, five tips, in doing a really good featured presentation.

First, I believe you should prepare, prepare, prepare. Don’t wing it. Some people say they do better when they wing it. My experience, Priscilla, is hardly anyone does better when they wing it. I know a business profession who is a trainer and he says he does better when he just goes with the flow and wings it. I have observed him. He’s wrong. He’s wrong. He doesn’t. He thinks he does but he doesn’t.

I am a real believer in preparation. Prepare an outline of what you want to say. Practice it. Use note cards. Write your remarks out on a piece of paper. Do it with large handwriting if you need to. Make it with a bigger font. But have some notes.

Don’t do a word for word script. That is not what I am suggesting. Have some bullet points and then practice. Very important. Listen, I practice. When I do something as simple as a Chairman’s report at BNI conferences, I put in 40 hours for a one hour talk. For a one hour talk, yeah. And when I do a keynote presentation, I put in well over 40 hours preparing a keynote presentation, which is an hour long and isn’t much longer.

I put in time because if you want to come across as professional and knowledgeable, you want to do it in a way that shows that you understand your business. Yeah, you can just do it off the cuff, but if there is a particular message that you want to convey, it is better to prepare.

Priscilla: How do you do 40 hours preparing for a speech?

Ivan: Well, for most of my talks, I have PowerPoints to go with them. I recommend a book called Presentation Zen. It absolutely changed the way I do PowerPoints. Instead of a lot of verbiage, I do almost no verbiage. I do photographs and a couple of key words. It’s all a matter of timing, knowing what stories you are going to put where, knowing what you are going to say when that photograph goes up.

You know, my presentations are choreographed. Even a short presentation, a 10 minute presentation, I choreograph, and at least a couple of hours preparing. That’s me. I don’t want to scare all the members that you have to do two hours, but you have to put in 30 minutes at least to do your 10 minute presentation. That’s my suggestion.

The second thing is be specific and talk about the things that you know best. You don’t have to teach everyone everything you do. It’s only a few minutes long- eight, 10, 12 minutes, depending on the chapter. But you want to say something significant about what you do- either how to refer you or something specific about what you do in business. So be specific.

Third, I would use handouts, visuals, or PowerPoint slides to support the presentation. It might be difficult in a chapter to have PowerPoint slides. I get that. And by the way, PowerPoint slides can be boring. I mean, they can be really bad. So if you take a look at that book that I recommend, Presentation Zen, you will never do a PowerPoint the same again. Really, it is very great on how to do PowerPoints where they are entertaining, not just informative.

But handouts, some sort of visual- I really think that props, books, slides, handouts, gadgets, anything can help with the presentation. Just don’t make your PowerPoint a crutch. You can make it help your presentation flow.

Fourth, this is an important one. Remember you are the expert. This is your business. In the eyes of your fellow members, you are the expert and they want to hear what you have to say. Most of them are going to be eager to learn something from you- something about what you do, something about who you are and how they can refer you. If you focus on what you know best, you will feel more confident and you will come across as very credible. Believe in yourself and believe in your message. You are the expert.

You know, I have told people that and some of them have been like, I never thought about that. I guess I am. You are. One person per profession. That is your field and your turn to shine.

The last thing that I would recommend is if at all possible, be creative. Find a way to communicate that makes you comfortable talking to a group. Engage them in conversation or start with Q and A.

I had one person who was absolutely petrified with a 10-12 minute presentation. Absolutely petrified. I said, “Look, don’t do a talk.”

She said, “What do you mean don’t do a talk?”

I said, “No. Why don’t you give them a test?”

She said, “What?”

She was an accountant. I said, “Give them a test on tax law. Just true or false. 10 questions. Just say, ‘True or false?’ and then read the question and have them take a vote. How many say true? Raise your hand. How many say false? Raise your hand. Then give them the answer and move on to the next question. Don’t do a speech. This will show how knowledgeable you are about tax law.”

She said, “I can do that. I am not afraid to do that. That I can do.”

You know what was amazing, Priscilla, about that? By question four or five, she was being extemporaneous. They were all laughing. You know what’s one person after five questions and five wrong answers. They were like, they are going to take me to jail. I am getting all of these wrong. They were having a great time.

She actually started to go over time. This was a woman who was petrified speaking in front of a group. I am sure you have seen people in BNI who have really acquired skills at speaking when at first they were much, much shyer, yeah?

Priscilla: Yeah. Definitely. I was thinking about when you said to bring props, there are two members in our group who have brought props quite a bit and it is always a lot of fun and interesting. One is a plumber and he comes with these pieces of pipe and different shower heads and kind of corroded things. The other is an auto repair person who brings in really corroded and broken parts and shows everybody what these car pieces look like, you know. It’s really fun and interesting.

Ivan: The next and really my fifth point is be creative. If you can do something creative it gets people’s attention. And you say he brought in parts that were broken or parts that-

Priscilla: Yeah, that he had taken out of cars that had failed. You know, they were all corroded and falling apart.

Ivan: See, I would have never thought of that. That is exactly the kind of thing that you want to do in a longer presentation.

Here is one last additional suggestion: It’s okay to be a little nervous. To this day, Priscilla, right before I go up to speak to an audience, I am nervous. Don’t tell anyone, okay? I’m nervous. I have been doing this 30 years. I am a professional speaker.

If you think, you don’t understand I get nervous, I get it. I get nervous before I speak. The thing is I try to use that nervous energy to my benefit.

I use that nervous energy as a little extra adrenaline because when I have to do a presentation, I am usually in a region supporting the Director, doing a huge event. I feel like I have an obligation to give to that group, to support that region, to knock it out of the park so that members are really excited and motivated when they hear me do the presentation. If I don’t do a good job, there is a lot of work going into that event. I start thinking about that and getting really nervous before I go on.

But I try to use that nervous energy as an adrenaline, and once I go on, I am fine. So if you get nervous, don’t worry about it. It’s okay. We all get nervous. Make sure there is a glass of water nearby in case you need a sip. And by the way, a glass of water is a really good technique for nervousness.

Priscilla: Really? Why?

Ivan: Yeah, because you pause, and it just looks like you are thinking. Don’t say anything. Don’t him and haw. Don’t say you’re really nervous. Just pause as you pick up the glass, have a sip, look at your audience, set the glass down and continue your conversation. Actually, it is a great way to deal with being a little bit nervous on state.

Priscilla: Uh huh. Okay. Good.

Ivan: And sometimes I will pause when I forget where I am at. And rather than say, “Where am I in my speech?” I will just pause, have a little sip of water and then figure out where I am supposed to be. And off I go.

Priscilla: Yeah. Good. I have heard you many times, and you give these great stories. They are really funny.

Ivan: Stories are a great way to do a presentation. They really teach people. If you have a good story that illustrates a point- I am not talking about a joke. If you have a story that illustrates a point, stories are a great way to educate and train people. Certainly, this should be part of your presentation.

Those are my suggestions for BNI members. Five points: prepare, be specific, use handouts, remember you are the expert, be creative and as a little bonus point, it is okay to be a little bit nervous. Many people are. I am and I know a lit of people are. It’s okay.

Priscilla: Perfect.

Ivan: Thank you, Priscilla. That’s it for today.

Priscilla: Okay, great. I would just like to remind the listeners that this podcast has been brought to you by NetworkingNow.com, which is the leading site on the net for networking downloadables. The presentation above and a few of the commenters addressed the trepidation of some (dare I say, many) about speaking in front of a group, and suggested various remedies.

If I must say so myself, I find this one to be the best by virtue of its simplicity and effectiveness. In part because I was also involved at the time in Toastmasters (highly recommended, by the way) and actually studied and practiced the art, I introduced my chapter to introductions. As speakers were scheduled, likewise “introducers” were scheduled.

Each pair then had a one-on-one to get the story straight. Introducers were encouraged to draw out something from the speaker that was NOT directly business related; something the audience wouldn’t have expected, something not boring — something *gasp* memorable!. If the speaker came to his time with the jitters, much shivering was dispelled by a short warmup presented by a fellow member, which … wait for it … also served as a testimonial, and a low pressure practice run at speaking for the introducer herself! The multiplier effect was tremendous. 1-on-1, memory hook, testimonial, speaking practice … I think we sent this up the line for national consideration … I don’t recall the result, but in any case, it didn’t make the cut here in Episode 367.

Ivan, you may remember your touring visit to Delaware and Pennsylvania with your first book, and the canned introduction (zzzzz) you brought to be used for your evening presentation to a Chamber group … which ended up on the cutting room floor, and maybe you recall the introduction you DID get. Were YOUR butterflies a bit more manageable than had you followed a recitation of all your degrees and such?!! Surely. If for no other reason than the trilogy punchline that drew you to the lectern !!

Thank you for this podcast. I’ve been preparing to give my 10 minute presentation and really appreciate the simple format you offer.

As a writer, the storytelling hint is one of my favorites. However, the most eye-opening hint was the one about being the expert.

Your reminder that there is only one representative per industry in each group was profound! Despite being keenly aware of that fact, the context of that making us the sole expert in the group had escaped my recognition. It was a very empowering statement!

Thanks to these hints, my presentation was already being revised and improved before the podcast was over.

I’m still nervous, but more eager to see the end results now. Thanks again!

Very good suggestions and ideas for the 10 minute presentations.

September 9, 2019 at 7:18 am

Thank you Ivan , for making it simple to do an 10min presentation. In India, that is an 8 min presentation. I have been with BNI for 5 years now, and it is a platform like no other for promoting my business. I realised the following for 1. a presentation, especially a PPT is not required. But almost all members treat it like the norm. most of their “effort” goes into making a proper PPT than in preparation of what they want to convey 2. with a PPT, the focus is not on the speaker but on the screen, or at best divided between the screen and the speaker. 3. the ppt comes with its own technological challenges, often making it easy to fumble the slides, the pictures/colors become awry and tends to leave the presenters frustrated, and audience alienated.

Somehow the idea of doing something “creative” , or showcasing the product / a service or an LCD is not something thats crossed most minds.

I am the presentation coordinator this term, and I’ve been sitting with new and old members to shun the PPT and do the presentation without one.

One of the major differences i found was that people who didnt do a PPT, all eyes were on the speaker, and the speaker was the most important person in the room. This person was remembered later as well, and in general vastly improved his visibility.

I also believe that I will not have a PPT in hand, when i am referring a person to someone else. The 8-min presentation should be about giving your BNI Sales force enough nuggets and knowledge bites about your business, for them to be able to remember you or pitch for your business to their clients more effectively

It would be great to hear a podcast on the importance of a PPT, the do’s and donts, from a BNI perspective, and about a BNI presentation audience is different from a regular presentation audience.

I found the podcast to be incredibly effective!! It really emphasized the importance of preparation. I also learned that for feature presentations, using handouts, props, etc. can be quite effective, even without relying solely on power point. Thanks for the insightful content.

How to Give A Great 10 Minute Networking Group Presentation

by | May 23, 2019

 width=

Referral networking groups are a great way to grow your business, together with other like-minded businesses. However, the usual 60 second “ elevator pitch ” time that is given during a meeting isn’t enough to properly educate the group on what you do or what kind of referrals you are looking for.

That is where the 10 minute presentation comes in. The 10 minute networking presentation is an excellent opportunity to give a much longer explanation about: what you do, why you do it, what problem you solve and what kind of referrals you are looking for.

But being prepared is key. Coming unprepared for your speaking slot won’t only be a wasted opportunity, but it can actually hurt your reputation and referrability. Here are some tips, tricks and best practices to make sure that you are getting the most out of your presentation.

  • Explain to us how we as your referral partners can help you find new business
  • Educate us on what industries and types of clients you like working with
  • Write it, Rehearse it, Practice it, Time it
  • Get feedback
  • Use displays, handouts and/or multimedia
  • Be unprepared
  • Tell us what is going on in your personal life
  • Talk about unrelated past jobs or experiences

Anatomy of an Ideal 10 Minute Presentation

  • Credentials
  • Experience in industry
  • Where business is conducted (at your office, at client’s office, online, etc)
  • Unique products or services
  • Hot products
  • How your company is innovative
  • Tell us how you helped client(s) solve a problem – be specific
  • Use facts or figures whenever possible
  • Give a specific client testimonial when possible
  • Tell us what specific industries you like working with
  • How can we find people in that industry?
  • What specifically should we listen for when having a conversation with someone?
  • Who is a good referral partner for you?
  • What specific industries should the group invite to help you?
  • Finish with something that suitably rounds off your presentation. Due to the recency effect, the end of your presentation is likely to be one of the most memorable parts for most people in the audience. Make it count with a sales call-to-action, or details of a future opportunity, a web address for further contact, or even just a final summary of your points.

The Secret to Pitching Your Business Plan in Just 10 Minutes This outline breaks down a business plan pitch minute by minute so you can stay on topic and build the necessary interest and excitement.

By Mike Moyer • Apr 1, 2022

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Delivering a good pitch is as much about conveying emotion as conveying information. If you get the opportunity to pitch in front of a live audience , both of those objectives should be top of mind. The phrase, "They don't care what you know until they know that you care," is sage advice and is the basis for starting a 10-minute pitch.

Startups are hard work. If you do not particularly care about the market or the problem you are solving, you may bail out when the going gets tough. Investors need to know this is more than just a business.

Related: 4 Powerful Communication Strategies to Win Any Sales Pitch

Minute 1: Personal Introduction

Let the audience know that you, personally, care about the people and the problem you are trying to solve. Use the word "I" instead of "we." I know you are representing your team and your company, but for now concentrate on establishing your passion and commitment. Tell a quick, personal story about how you stumbled upon the business you are pursuing and what made you realize it was where you wanted to focus most of your waking hours.

Your slide(s) should be simple. They are just there as a backdrop to your opening monologue and should make you look good. I, personally, like to show photos of me and/or customers experiencing the problem first-hand. The focus should be on you and your message.

Step forward to the audience, make gentle eye contact and engage them on a personal level as much as you can. The goal is for them to trust you, have confidence in you and to like you.

Transition out of the personal introduction into the overview of the problem you are trying to solve. Your job is to describe the problem as one that goes well beyond just you and your experience. A nice phrase is, "When I started looking around, I realized that I'm not the only one with X problem. Lots and lots of other people have it too!"

Minute 2: The Problem

Remember to keep an emotional appeal included in your description of the problem. People with this problem are: struggling, irritated, angry, disenfranchised? Keep human emotions real. Break down the problem into its component parts accompanied by a diagram.

Your slides during this minute are simply visual aids that help explain the problem. Like in the introduction, photos can express the human factor, but diagrams can help explain how the problem is experienced by people.

Keep close to the audience and help them empathize with those who experience the problem. As you move into the solution, physically back away from the audience, smile and spread out your arms to make bigger gestures. Your job is to bring up the excitement level in the room.

Minute 3: The Solution

At this point, you are going to maximize the crescendo. Show excitement and passion for your businesses solution. Transition to "we" instead of just "I." Walk the audience not only through how the solution works, but also through the great benefits of the solution.

You need to position your body in front of the room and make it as big and bright as you can with big arm movements, a bright smile, confident voice and lots of eye contact. The audience should begin to share your excitement for your business.

Your slides are visual aids and diagrams. They should contain little to no text. Keep them simple as possible as complexity will only suck the energy out of the room. You don't have to explain everything your company does, just the main points. Remember, you only have 10 minutes.

It's good to show images or screenshots of existing products or beta releases and other hard evidence of your execution, but overexplaining the solution will make the presentation less compelling, and it will take too long. You want to leave the audience wanting more.

Once you have your audience feeling great about the solution, it is time to talk money.

Minute 4: Business Model

There are several money-related topics you'll need to touch on during your pitch, including how you'll make money, how much money you will make and how much money you will need. Keep these parts separate so they are easier to digest.

Now is the time to tell the audience how you will make money. There are literally dozens of possible business models, including selling the product, selling a subscription, taking a processing fee, licensing and so on. Explain how you are going to charge people for the solution you are offering.

On your slide is an outline of the customer unit economics for your chosen business model — the price they will pay and basic terms of a typical contract. Explain how you will "do the deal" with customers. Whenever you show numbers, stand close to your presentation screen and point to the numbers you are talking about. Numbers are hard to follow. Pointing as you talk will help people stay engaged.

If the business model is attractive, as it should be, you will have to explain who else is going after the customer's money.

Related: Tips to Follow When Re-Fitting Your Business Model to the New Normal

Minute 5: The Competition

There's no such thing as a business without competition, and implying that you have none is a major red flag for investors and even potential partners or customers. Whatever problem you are going after is being addressed somehow, maybe not very well, but people experiencing the problem are trying to solve it, and the resources they access to cobble together a solution is where you will define your competition.

The key here is not to avoid the notion that competition exists, but how your company is different . The existence of competition validates the market. Do not talk about how you are "better," focus on "different." Your attitude towards the competition gives the audience a peek into your business soul. Are you dutifully respectful of their presences and power or are you arrogant and naïve enough to think your little startup will have no problem beating them? Err on the side of humility.

Your slides should depict your differences from the main competitors. Feature comparisons or positioning charts , for instance, can be effective tools. Many of the questions you will get from the audience will stem from what you say during this minute of your pitch.

Be clear and respectful before you transition to your sales and marketing plan.

Minute 6: Sales and Marketing

During you description of the competition, you struck a respectful tone. It's now time to amp up the room again as you talk about how many potential customers are out there and how you're going to get them. Show excitement and confidence as you walk the audience through the market data, your chosen point of entry and your communication strategy.

Slides will depict data, charts, and graphs which you will want to point to as you explain. Images of web sites, brochures, trade show booths in action, etc. are fair game here, too, and will help build excitement in room.

It is important to tie your sales and marketing plans together so it doesn't look like you are shooting a scatter gun of one-off tactics. Show the logic and flow of lead generation to final sale and how your team plans to take the prospects through the buying process and into the customer experience.

End this minute by translating the marketing sizzle into numbers. It is time to talk about money again!

Minute 7: Money

Earlier, you explained how the business is going to make money. Now, it's time to tell the audience how much money you are going to make. This is the good part. Your description of the deal shows the unit economics of a single customer (price), and your market description shows how many potential deals are out there (quantity). Armed with this information, you can describe how revenue builds over time.

Break it down for the audience. Show income and expenses in graphical format. Nothing beats a good bar chart, and pretty much anything beats a screenshot of a spreadsheet. Back up to your presentation slide and point to information like the weatherperson points to a weather map on TV.

Keep the tone upbeat and engaging. You'll want to exude as much confidence as you can. To this end, avoid showing different scenarios in your forecast. Pick the scenario that you think is most likely to happen, and be prepared to defend your assumptions.

To make the business believable, the audience will now need to meet your team.

Minute 8: The Team

It may seem a little strange to wait until towards the end of your pitch to introduce your team, but waiting has benefits. It's important to introduce your team in the context of the business so the audience understands why it is what it is. If you introduce the team upfront, you will have to circle back to describe their roles later, which wastes time and can get redundant. A 10-minute pitch must eliminate redundancy.

As you introduce the key players on the team, you can highlight what function they will perform and brag (yes, brag) about how great they are at their function and how lucky you are to be working with them. Talk about yourself with humility, and talk about your team like they are the best team in the world.

Rather than showing headshots and bullet points, show images of the team in action or in a group. You want to make sure the audience sees a team , not a collection of individuals.

Next, you will explain the great work this great team has accomplished!

Minute 9: Proof of Concept/Traction

A team without results isn't much more than a cocktail party. To get investors or customers, you need to show results. What has the team accomplished? Have they launched an MVP? Does the company have revenue? Are the customers happy?

The more traction you can show, the better. This, more than just about any other minute of your pitch, will demonstrate your team's ability to pull off this business in the real world. Display customer testimonials and read them out loud. Show pictures of your solutions in action. Maximize the excitement in your voice and facial expression. You're almost at the end of your pitch, so be sure leave it on a high note!

You have one minute left. It's time to ask for the money.

Minute 10: Ask

Assuming you are pitching your business for the purpose of raising money, you will spend the last minute asking for it. By now, your audience has everything they need to know if they are interested, or not, in working with you. You must paint a clear picture of what you need from the audience and what investing with you will look like.

Investors want their money to be used for growth, not exploration. Show them that everything is in place to grow, you just need to fan the flames.

Many founders aren't sure how much money they will need and to what terms they will be willing to accept. They are keen to keep things open-ended. In my experience, however, investors want a starting point. Give it to them.

You already showed them how much you are expecting to make. This financial objective is based on many assumptions, not the least of which is how much outside funding will be required to execute the plan. Break it down for the investor. Do you want one main investor or a number of smaller investors?

If, for instance, you are raising $1 million, you could break it into 10 chunks of $100,000 each and say, "We are raising $1 million from up to ten investors in $100,000 units in exchange for a convertible note. How many units do you want?" Your slides can show the breakdown and the high-level terms of the note. This makes the deal easy to understand. An interested investor will not walk away from the deal based on your initial offer, they will counteroffer, and you'll be off to the negotiating table — mission accomplished!

Express enthusiasm for their participation in your business. Keep the energy levels high.

The trick to delivering a compelling 10-minute pitch is to let the story flow logically and to avoid repeating yourself. It's not logical, for instance, to introduce the team before anyone knows what kind of team is needed. Likewise, it's not logical to talk about progress and traction before talking about how the business works.

Each topic in the above outline neatly flows into the next, allowing you to build your story and maintain the energy level in the room. A good pitch lets the story unfold naturally and doesn't force things together. In this pitch, you may notice that there is no "money" or "financial" section. Making money is simply part of the flow of the story, so it is touched on multiple times during the pitch.

Perfecting the pitch means practicing the pitch. It's much more than what you say. It's also about when you say it and how you say it.

With NEVs, the term China uses for EVs and PHEVs, now accounting for over half of all car sales batteries are becoming increasingly important. While not as sexy as the latest car launches what powers them is equally newswothy and battery giant CATL got in on the action with its new Shenxing Plus battery. Using cheaper more stable lithium iron phosphate it achieves 4C charging and can add 600 kilometers in as little as 10 minutes.

Key statistic for the Shenxing Plus is the energy density of 205 Wh/kg. Car companies have tended to use lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP) for cheaper vehicles for two reasons firstly the batteries cost less and secondly they are safer. Where they could not compete with NCM chemistry batteries was for energy density. This meant that to give longer range while keeping battery weight down more expensive NCM was the only option despite (LFP) being supposedly safer. An energy density of 205 Wh/kg is comparable to many NCM batteries.

CATL has applied a self-developed 3D honeycomb material to improve the energy density of the anode and control expansion of the charging and discharging volume. Also aiding the space utilization is CTB 3.0 (cell to body) technology which gives the battery an integrated shell structure, volume efficiency is increased by 7%.

CATL claim the new battery can enable cars to have a 1000 km range (CLTC). The Shenxing Plus is a 4C battery meaning that the charging multiplier is four times. A ten minute charge can add 600 km range and 1 km can be added in a second. The c urrent Shenxing battery can add 400 km in ten minutes and so the Plus version is a significant improvement.

Features such as an ultra-high cooling efficiency high-voltage box, and AI intelligent battery management system algorithm help ensure the safety of the battery.

CATL can produce a battery cell in one second in the company’s lighthouse factories.

Also announced at the press conference was the launch of the Shenxing supercharging network. Working with Huawei, Star Charging, Shudao New Energy, and Cloud Fast Charging it aims to build the largest supercharging service platform in China.

Editor’s note:

The Shenxing Plus is a big breakthrough for CATL and means that it is currently at the forefront of LFP batteries. It also gives a lot of pressure to BYD to really come up with something revolutionary for its second generation blade battery . Currently the expectation is for only around 190 Wh/kg.

University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo hosted the 14th Annual Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science Symposium , April 11-12, 2024, at the Campus Center.

The event is organized each year by the Kaiameaola Club , which is made up of graduate students in the program .

This years theme was “Hoʻomau: Sustaining Communities and Ecosystems in our Changing Climate,” focusing on the changes occurring to ecosystems, endemic species, and Indigenous communities as anthropogenic climate change continues to exacerbate social and environmental concerns.

In light of the wild fire tragedy that recently occurred on Maui, student organizers emphasized the importance of building up community and ecological resilience.

Emma Stierhoff , “Assessing the long-term impacts of chronic infection with avian malaria in Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi.”

A small yellow bird singing in a tree.

“The introduction of avian malaria ( Plasmodium relictum ) to Hawaiʻi has decimated native forest bird populations, driving many species to extinction, and threatening those that remain. However, the Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi, a native honeycreeper, has shown resilience against acute infection with avian malaria. Hawaiʻi ʻmakihi who survive the acute stage remain chronically infected with low parasitemia levels. Although immediate costs of acute malarial infection have been closely studied, the costs of chronic infection are poorly understood in this species. We assessed the impact of chronic infection on physiological condition of Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi near ʻᾹinahou Ranch in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. During biweekly banding sessions from May 2022 to August 2023, Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi were banded, measured, and weighed, and a blood sample was collected for each bird. Blood samples were used to measure hematocrit, triglycerides, and reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) and to determine disease status using qPCR. There were no detectable differences in size, hematocrit, triglycerides, or ROMs based on disease status. These results further demonstrate the resilience Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi have against avian malaria and set the foundation for future research studying the factors facilitating this resilience and how that might be applied to protect more threatened honeycreeper populations.”

Lauren Smith , “Using bioacoustics to assess the success of incompatible insect technique.”

Lauren at the podium with PowerPoint screen showing image of helicopter flying over remote island setting.

In Hawaiʻi, more than two-thirds of native forest bird species have gone extinct since the arrival of humans, largely driven by introduced avian diseases vectored by non-native southern house mosquitoes ( Culex quinquefasciatus ). On the island of Maui, the critically endangered kiwikiu ( Pseudonestor xanthrophrys ) and ʻākohekohe ( Palmeria dolei ) are likely facing extinction in as few as five years. To prevent extinctions and persistent declines in numerous species, conservation partners are employing the Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) on a landscape scale to suppress mosquito populations and, in turn, decrease disease transmission. To monitor the response of the bird populations to IIT, we are deploying 80 autonomous recording units (ARUs) along transects inside and outside IIT treatment areas in The Nature Conservancy’s Waikamoi Preserve and Haleakalā National Park’s Kīpahulu Valley. We are processing these acoustic data using the machine learning classifier Perch, a new analytical method co-developed by the UH Hilo Listening Observatory for Hawaiian Ecosystems (LOHE) lab and Google Research. Perch identifies bird calls and calculates call densities, from which we estimated relative abundance and occupancy for six native species. We are also using begging call densities to estimate breeding success of each species. By comparing these data across breeding seasons, we expect to detect any changes in relative abundance, occupancy, productivity, and elevational shifts in range that may result from the suppression of mosquitoes and disease.

Manuela Cortes , “Exploring the impact of micro-fragmentation size on coral growth rates.”

Aerial of the center with Hilo Bay and breakwater in background.

Coral microfragmentation is commonly used to propagate corals in nurseries. The process involves breaking small pieces off of a parent colony and encouraging them to grow into independent colonies. This method has been shown to increase the rate of coral growth, potentially due to the difference in fragment size which affects the surface area available for the generation of new daughter polyps. I will be analyzing the relationship between coral fragment size and growth rate at the MOP Coral Nursery at the Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resource Center. My goal is to determine if there is an optimal size of coral fragment associated with higher growth and survivorship rates.

Krista Golgotiu , “Uniting Indigenous knowledge and scientific inquiry: A cultural approach to understanding the Hawaiian environment through the use of ʻŌlelo Noʻeau.”

Cover of book, ʻŌlelo Noʻeau is by Mary Kawena Pukui..

This research proposal aims to bridge indigenous knowledge from the Hawaiian people focusing on ʻŌlelo Noʻeau (traditional Hawaiian proverbs and sayings), with scientific methods to prove the observations of ancient Hawaiians and enhance conservation efforts in modern-day Hawaiʻi. Using a collaborative approach involving members of the community, cultural practitioners, and scientists alike, this project aims to identify and validate specific ʻŌlelo Noʻeau that reference the ocean, animals, plants, and weather patterns. By first identifying these specific ʻŌlelo Noʻeau, through the use of Hawaiian community engagement the accuracy of the interpretation and understanding of these traditional sayings will be ensured. After choosing the specific ʻŌlelo Noʻeau, selecting key areas around Hawaiʻi to conduct field studies is essential. Field studies will be conducted in the areas associated with the specific sayings, through observation and data collection. The use of any past recorded data in regards to weather, ocean, or plant and animal growth patterns will also be utilized. With the inclusion of the Hawaiian community through participation in field studies, traditional knowledge and new information regarding these patterns will be combined with any observations and data collected in the field. Then by utilizing statistical methods and ecological modeling an assessment on the alignment between what is observed and the knowledge embedded in the ʻŌlelo Noʻeau can be made. This process will aim to confirm the ecological accuracy of traditional wisdom passed down. Proving ʻŌlelo Noʻeau can provide insights on sustainable resource management for local communities, and inform modern practices on how to use limited natural resources more sustainably by tracking natural indicators. Scientifically affirming ʻŌlelo Noʻeau through this project, from the research and data collected, will validate the scientific relevance of traditional knowledge and the important need to include indigenous communities in science.

Amy Durham , “He ‘Io Au: A community project about ʻIo (the Hawks on your block).

Hawk up in tree.

Do you have a hawk on your block? ʻIo is our Hawaiʻi island’s endemic hawk. Their story is linked to many aspects of our cultural and natural legacies. Since they are present in many of our daily lives, they are an ideal conduit for connecting to our native species – which is especially important in altered landscapes devoid of such interactions. Community-led conservation projects are invaluable resources for learning about and managing data-deficient species. Despite ʻio’s importance, minimal research has been conducted on their utilization of our urban and agricultural neighborhoods. We want to change that by collaborating with you! Our group of ʻio enthusiasts aims to spotlight ʻio by introducing the upcoming “He ʻIo Au” community platform. Our objective is to keep all eyes on ʻio by (1) Utilizing the volunteer He ʻIo Au platform to gather data on ʻio’s behavior in our neighborhoods, including details on population size, diet preferences, and breeding behavior (2) Highlighting the significance of ‘io by sharing our ʻio stories through interviews and an online blog and (3) Engaging in community outreach to educate about ‘io, raise awareness regarding intentional harm, and actively seek to share knowledge and collaborate on solutions.

Champions Cup: Patrick Schulte describes mentality from Columbus Crew-Tigres PKs

In Schulte's rookie season  with the Crew, he struggled with penalty kicks, allowing all four of the attempts he was met with during regulation score, but his track record changed in the  CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals.  On April 9, Columbus and Tigres finished regulation in their  second-leg matchup  tied, forcing a shootout to decide the series winner.

With the 2023 season far from his mind, Schulte told teammate  Evan Bush  he was going to save three of Tigres' penalty kicks, setting a target number just like his youth soccer coach did for him years ago. Schulte would finish with two saved penalties, but that's all the Crew would need to advance to their first Champions Cup semifinals 4-3 in penalty kicks.

"I've been there before and I have a bunch of confidence in myself," Schulte said. "That's just my mindset going into it was, I knew I was going to stop a couple. ... There wasn't any worry, it was more so just quieting the crowd and celebrating and moving on."

Read more about Schulte's mentality during the Crew's penalty shootout against Tigres in the quarterfinals here.

Columbus Crew vs CF Monterrey past meetings

The Crew have faced Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions Cup once, back in 2021. Darlington Nagbe, Alex Matan and Evan Bush were the only active Columbus players from that series still with the team. Aidan Morris was with the team, but was out with a season-ending ACL injury.

In the series, Monterrey and Columbus walked away from the first leg at the Historic Crew Stadium tied 2-2. Once the teams met in Monterrey for the second leg, the home team scored 3 goals compared to the Crew's none to knock them out of the tournament.

How did Columbus Crew make it to the semifinals?

After receiving a bye into the Round of 16 due to being MLS Cup champions, the Crew started their CONCACAF Champions Cup journey against Houston Dynamo.

With the first leg taking place on the road March 6, Columbus took a 1-0 aggerate goal advantage when  forward Alex Matan scored a last-second goal toward the end of the match . Matan has been sidelined with a thigh injury since that game.

The Crew returned to Lower.com Field on March 12 for the second leg and took an early 1-0 lead over Houston in their second leg match off a Hernandez goal. Holding onto the lead for most of the match, Columbus would allow the Dynamo to score a penalty kick goal to  tie the match 1-1 , but still advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 on aggregate.

In the first leg of the semifinals, the Crew faced off against Tigres at Lower.com Field on April 3, but before the match could kickoff, the teams had to wait out a two-hour rain delay. Without star striker Cucho Hernandez for the second match in a row, the Crew relied on attacker Diego Rossi to lead Columbus to a 1-1 tie with his first goal of 2024.

At Estadio Universitario in Mexico for the second leg on April 9, the Crew had to score at least one goal to avoid elimination. It was Rossi once again who scored for Columbus, but with striker Andre-Pierre Gignac scoring for Tigres with his second goal of the series as well, the teams finished regulation tied 1-1.

Since the normal tie breaker of road goals was also deadlocked at 1-1, the second leg went into two 15-minute extra time periods. After 120 overall minutes of play and the series still tied 2-2 on aggregate, Columbus and Tigres were forced to go to a penalty shootout.

Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte saved Tigres' first two penalty kicks, and with every player besides Hernandez hitting their attempts for Columbus, the club advanced to its first Champions Cup semifinals. The Crew also made tournament history by becoming the first MLS team to defeat a Liga MX team after failing to win its home leg.

How did CF Monterrey make it to the quarterfinals?

Monterrey started Champions Cup play on a tear, defeating the Comunicaciones of Guatemala 7-1 on aggregate in the opening round.

In the round of 16, Monterrey was faced with the challenge of defeating the Crew's Hell is Real rival, FC Cincinnati. After holding Cincinnati scoreless in an 1-0 first leg victory at TQL Stadium, Monterrey was led to a second leg 2-1 victory by former Cincinnati forward Brandon Vazquez to advance to the quarterfinals against Inter Miami.

Despite Miami's star forward Lionel Messi returning to action in the second leg following a hamstring injury that sidelined him for nearly a month, Monterrey defeated Miami in both legs, finishing with an 5-2 aggregate.

Columbus Crew in past CONCACAF Champions Cup tournaments

  • 2003: Lost to Atletico Morelia 6-2 aggregate in the quarterfinals
  • 2010: Lost to Toluca Futbol Club 5-4 aggregate in the quarterfinals
  • 2011: Lost to Real Salt Lake 4-1 aggregate in the quarterfinals
  • 2021: Lost to CF Monterrey 5-2 aggregate in the quarterfinals
