Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover: Lessons in Strategic Change

In late October 2022, Elon Musk officially took Twitter private and became the company’s majority shareholder, finally ending a months-long acquisition saga. He appointed himself CEO and brought in his own team to clean house. Musk needed to take decisive steps to succeed against the major opposition to his leadership from both inside and outside the company. Twitter employees circulated an open letter protesting expected layoffs, advertising agencies advised their clients to pause spending on Twitter, and EU officials considered a broader Twitter ban. What short-term actions should Musk take to stabilize the situation, and how should he approach long-term strategy to turn around Twitter? Harvard Business School assistant professor Andy Wu and co-author Goran Calic, associate professor at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business, discuss Twitter as a microcosm for the future of media and information in their case, “Twitter Turnaround and Elon Musk.”

The Opioid Crisis, CEO Pay, and Shareholder Activism

In 2020, AmerisourceBergen Corporation, a Fortune 50 company in the drug distribution industry, agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits filed nationwide against the company for its opioid distribution practices, which critics alleged had contributed to the opioid crisis in the US. The $6.6 billion global settlement caused a net loss larger than the cumulative net income earned during the tenure of the company’s CEO, which began in 2011. In addition, AmerisourceBergen’s legal and financial troubles were accompanied by shareholder demands aimed at driving corporate governance changes in companies in the opioid supply chain. Determined to hold the company’s leadership accountable, the shareholders launched a campaign in early 2021 to reject the pay packages of executives. Should the board reduce the executives’ pay, as of means of improving accountability? Or does punishing the AmerisourceBergen executives for paying the settlement ignore the larger issue of a business’s responsibility to society? Harvard Business School professor Suraj Srinivasan discusses executive compensation and shareholder activism in the context of the US opioid crisis in his case, “The Opioid Settlement and Controversy Over CEO Pay at AmerisourceBergen.”

A Rose by Any Other Name: Supply Chains and Carbon Emissions in the Flower Industry

Headquartered in Kitengela, Kenya, Sian Flowers exports roses to Europe. Because cut flowers have a limited shelf life and consumers want them to retain their appearance for as long as possible, Sian and its distributors used international air cargo to transport them to Amsterdam, where they were sold at auction and trucked to markets across Europe. Hertz CEO Kathryn Marinello with CFO Jamere Jackson and other members of the executive team in 2017

Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies of 2021

Two cases about Hertz claimed top spots in 2021's Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies

Two cases on the uses of debt and equity at Hertz claimed top spots in the CRDT’s (Case Research and Development Team) 2021 top 40 review of cases.

Hertz (A) took the top spot. The case details the financial structure of the rental car company through the end of 2019. Hertz (B), which ranked third in CRDT’s list, describes the company’s struggles during the early part of the COVID pandemic and its eventual need to enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The success of the Hertz cases was unprecedented for the top 40 list. Usually, cases take a number of years to gain popularity, but the Hertz cases claimed top spots in their first year of release. Hertz (A) also became the first ‘cooked’ case to top the annual review, as all of the other winners had been web-based ‘raw’ cases.

Besides introducing students to the complicated financing required to maintain an enormous fleet of cars, the Hertz cases also expanded the diversity of case protagonists. Kathyrn Marinello was the CEO of Hertz during this period and the CFO, Jamere Jackson is black.

Sandwiched between the two Hertz cases, Coffee 2016, a perennial best seller, finished second. “Glory, Glory, Man United!” a case about an English football team’s IPO made a surprise move to number four.  Cases on search fund boards, the future of malls,  Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund, Prodigy Finance, the Mayo Clinic, and Cadbury rounded out the top ten.

Other year-end data for 2021 showed:

  • Online “raw” case usage remained steady as compared to 2020 with over 35K users from 170 countries and all 50 U.S. states interacting with 196 cases.
  • Fifty four percent of raw case users came from outside the U.S..
  • The Yale School of Management (SOM) case study directory pages received over 160K page views from 177 countries with approximately a third originating in India followed by the U.S. and the Philippines.
  • Twenty-six of the cases in the list are raw cases.
  • A third of the cases feature a woman protagonist.
  • Orders for Yale SOM case studies increased by almost 50% compared to 2020.
  • The top 40 cases were supervised by 19 different Yale SOM faculty members, several supervising multiple cases.

CRDT compiled the Top 40 list by combining data from its case store, Google Analytics, and other measures of interest and adoption.

All of this year’s Top 40 cases are available for purchase from the Yale Management Media store .

Study list of these must-know financial literacy topics to become more money wise.

Financial literacy is a crucial skill to make informed decisions about your money. Understanding concepts like budgeting, investing and debt management is more important than ever for your financial well-being. Here are important financial topics you must know plus resources to put you on a path to thrive.

Budgeting is one of the most foundational financial topics of personal finance. Budgeting is deciding how you’ll allocate your money. It involves figuring out exactly how much you earn and where it’s going to go. Budgeting is not about perfection. It’s about the review, your progress and implementation.

There’s not necessarily one right way to budget. Instead, it’s about finding the strategy that works best for you. People have success with several budgeting methods, including the 50/30/20 budget method ; zero-based budget, in which you find a spot for every dollar, even if that spot is savings or debt payoff; and pay-yourself-first, in which you figure out how much you want to pay yourself each month, meaning how much you want to put toward your savings and debt.

When it comes to financial literacy, it’s important to understand the types of debt and how to manage them.

Every debt is either revolving or non-revolving. Revolving debt is one where you can continuously spend and pay off the debt. The most common revolving debt is a credit card, though a line of credit is also a type of revolving debt.

Non-revolving debt is one where you borrow a lump sum and then pay it off over a specific term. Non-revolving debts include mortgages, student loans, personal loans and car loans.

Debts are also secured vs. unsecured. A secured debt is one that is secured by collateral or an asset the lender can seize if you don’t make your payments. Mortgages and auto loans are secured debts since your lender can seize your home or car if you don’t pay them back.

Unsecured debts don’t have any collateral behind them. The lender can still take legal action to get their money, but there’s no asset they can seize from you. Student loans and credit cards are examples of unsecured debts.

It’s important to know about and fully understand each debt you have. For each debt, you should know your total balance, interest rate, minimum monthly payment and estimated payoff date.

Your net worth is one of the most important aspects of your financial picture. Your net worth is the difference between what you own and what you owe. To calculate your net worth, start by adding up your assets, which includes money in your bank accounts, investment accounts and physical assets like your home. Next, add your debts. Subtract your debts from your assets, and you get your net worth.

It’s OK if your net worth isn’t where you want it to be right now. The goal is simply to watch your net worth increase over time as you save money and pay off debt.

Credit refers to the ability to borrow money. But when people talk about credit, they’re usually talking about either their credit report or their credit score.

Credit report: Your credit report is a full list of all your current debt accounts, including how much you owe, who you owe it to and the monthly payments you’ve made. It also includes possibly negative information, such as any accounts in collections, and whether you’ve filed for bankruptcy.

When lenders are deciding whether to give you money, they look to your credit report to see how responsibly you’ve handled debt in the past. You can download a free copy of your credit reports at annualcreditreport.com .

Credit score: Your credit score is a number between 300 and 850 which is essentially a numerical rating of your credit report. It’s a snapshot of how responsible you are with debt. They range from very poor (300-579) to exceptional (800-850).

The importance of credit: Your credit score is one of the most important numbers in your financial toolbox. Someone may run your credit anytime you apply for a loan or credit card, rent an apartment or even apply for a job.

A poor credit score can result in being denied loans or stuck with high interest rates. It can also result in you being turned down for apartments and jobs. A very good or exceptional score can potentially save you thousands with better interest rates.

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that saving is one of the most important components of personal finance, but most people simply aren’t doing it. In fact, 2024 data shows that 44% of Americans could afford to pay for a $1,000 emergency without taking on more debt, according to Bankrate .

The saving priority most people should have – an emergency fund. Your emergency fund can help you cover any unforeseen expenses. It can also serve as an income replacement if you lose your job. Most experts recommend having between three- and six-months’ worth of expenses saved in your emergency fund.

When it comes to saving for a big goal, the best way to reach it is to divide the total number you need to save by the number of months you’d like to have it saved. That will tell you how much to save each month to reach your goal.

Homeownership

This is one of the most common goals and financial topics, offering the potential for long-term wealth accumulation through equity growth. Additionally, homeowners can enjoy tax deductions on mortgage interest and property taxes in many jurisdictions.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to buying a home:

▪ Only buy what you can afford – check out our Mortgage Affordability Calculator to determine how much of mortgage you may be able to obtain.

▪ A general rule of thumb is that your housing costs shouldn’t exceed 30% of your monthly income. Unfortunately, lenders often approve borrowers for far more than that.

▪ No one knows your financial situation like you do — not even a lender. Be sure that the monthly payment for your home fits comfortably within your budget.

If there’s ever an emergency — and chances are that there will be — you’ll be glad you have insurance . Buying insurance involves paying a company a monthly premium to cover your liabilities in an emergency. Types of insurance that most people should have include homeowners or renters’ insurance, auto insurance, life insurance and health insurance.

As you educate yourself on financial literacy, this list is a great starting point. Check out our Financial Well-Being Blog where you will find more information on each of these important topics.

Rural Finance Innovations: Topics and Case Studies

Rural Finance Innovations: Topics and Case Studies

This study of innovations in agricultural finance seeks to educate policy makers, task managers, and practitioners by highlighting four key areas where innovation could lead to greater access to agricultural finance:

  • warehouse receipts and collateral securitization measures;
  • risk management products;
  • supply chain finance; and
  • technology.

The paper explores these themes by giving examples from around the world where these strategies are being applied. Because many of these case studies are in the nascent stages, a full analysis of their “success” cannot be made at this point in time. The paper attempts to address the outcomes to date, and where the case studies are sufficiently advanced, give an indication of their results.

The paper describes the issues surrounding the themes and how innovative techniques can be used to overcome traditional barriers to providing financial services to agriculture by reducing either the risks associated with lending, the costs, or both. The diverse group of case studies and thematic discussions also underscore some key lessons regarding the role of government in its quest to lower costs and risk in the rural finance space.

The case studies include the following:

  • Drumnet – supply chain financing and technical assistance in Kenya
  • Clark Cotton – supply chain financing in Zambia
  • BASIX – weather insurance and mobile computers for portfolio management in India
  • SudAgroServ – supply chain financing with farmer ownership in Tajikistan
  • Indian Tobacco Company – Mobile marketing in India
  • Fondos – Risk pooling and reinsurance in Mexico
  • CRDB Ltd. – Price risk and collateral management in Tanzania
  • Cedula de Produto Rural – farm bonds to provide liquid collateral in Brazil
  • Nacional Financiera – reverse factoring to create linkages between small suppliers and big buyers

This paper makes considerable use of tables to summarise and make the information easy to assimilate. The appendices, for example, have a useful overview of physical and financial price risk management instruments and enabling technologies. The blend of theory and practical examples is also extremely useful to those who are less familiar with any of the four key themes that the paper addresses.

Case Study: How Aggressively Should a Bank Pursue AI?

  • Thomas H. Davenport
  • George Westerman

case study on finance topics

A Malaysia-based CEO weighs the risks and potential benefits of turning a traditional bank into an AI-first institution.

Siti Rahman, the CEO of Malaysia-based NVF Bank, faces a pivotal decision. Her head of AI innovation, a recent recruit from Google, has a bold plan. It requires a substantial investment but aims to transform the traditional bank into an AI-first institution, substantially reducing head count and the number of branches. The bank’s CFO worries they are chasing the next hype cycle and cautions against valuing efficiency above all else. Siti must weigh the bank’s mixed history with AI, the resistance to losing the human touch in banking services, and the risks of falling behind in technology against the need for a prudent, incremental approach to innovation.

Two experts offer advice: Noemie Ellezam-Danielo, the chief digital and AI strategy at Société Générale, and Sastry Durvasula, the chief information and client services officer at TIAA.

Siti Rahman, the CEO of Malaysia-headquartered NVF Bank, hurried through the corridors of the university’s computer engineering department. She had directed her driver to the wrong building—thinking of her usual talent-recruitment appearances in the finance department—and now she was running late. As she approached the room, she could hear her head of AI innovation, Michael Lim, who had joined NVF from Google 18 months earlier, breaking the ice with the students. “You know, NVF used to stand for Never Very Fast,” he said to a few giggles. “But the bank is crawling into the 21st century.”

Gov. Newsom and California show why liberals can't be trusted with the economy

The minimum wage increase is just the latest example of why california's economy is starting to struggle – and america shouldn't count on gov. gavin newsom to fix it..

California was once the wonderland where dreams come true. From Disney and Hollywood to its lush landscape and powerful politics, it seemed like a utopia of diversity, forward-thinking ideas and the picture of economic health.

California’s per-capita income and gross domestic product were soaring thanks to a thriving agricultural industry, a booming tech sector and what was then lower unemployment rates. In 2022, the state had the fifth largest economy in the world , boasting a higher GDP than most developed countries.

More millionaires lived in California than ever before with data showing their number grew 66% from 2019 to 2021.

As California slowly adopted more progressive policies, even right-wing America had to nod to its thriving economy.

What went wrong with California's economy?

But California's booming economy has taken a hit lately, thanks to liberal policies that have taken root. Things like tax hikes, hefty regulations and policies were progressive but failed to produce positive outcomes. According to The Economist , “The state faces three overlapping challenges: rising unemployment, growing fiscal strains and population outflows.”

The  California Center for Jobs and the Economy found that California’s economy may actually drop from fifth best in the world. The state’s GDP growth was 32nd in the nation last year thanks to revenue drops from rising unemployment, among other factors.

There are a few indicators of where the state's economy is heading. The cost of high gas and housing prices are ushering in an affordability crisis. California now has the highest unemployment rate in the country . That’s more than a million unemployed workers.

Trump's trial is upon us. What will it take to convince Republicans he's unfit for office?

How do California economic policies compare with Texas?

As a comparison, we can look at how Texas, a Republican-run state, matches up with California. The Texas economy is second to California among U.S. states and eighth in the world .

Even when California's economy was humming along, a 2021 Stanford University study comparing Texas and California's economies points out stark differences between red and blue governing styles that foreshadowed California's slow descent.

In California, state and local government revenues and spending were 60% higher than Texas on a per-resident basis. California has the country’s highest top marginal individual income tax rate, while Texas has no individual income tax (property taxes are higher in Texas though).

“State and local governments in California and Texas spent $638 billion and $291 billion, respectively, in the 2019 fiscal year, which represented $16,105 and $10,024 per resident,” the report reads.

California thinks a larger taxpayer-subsidized government is the answer to their residents’ problems; Texas wouldn’t presume that.

Liberals in la-la land: High wages, 32-hour workweeks sound great, but there's a steep price

California's decision to boost minimum wage only made things worse

The California legislature added to the problems by passing a law that boosts minimum wage.

Starting April 1, fast-food restaurant employees must be paid at least $20 an hour. Sounds nice right? Kinda makes slingin’ burgers at McDonald’s look a bit more appealing, doesn’t it? Not so fast.

If an employer is required to boost wage earners’ take-home pay per hour by several dollars, that cash must come from somewhere. Businesses either need to cut other salaries, raise prices for customers to compete with the costs or – worst-case scenario – shut down.

Restaurants are already starting to feel the repercussions.

Industry experts have suggested that to offset the increased cost to their bottom line, some business owners may choose to replace workers with kiosks or other technological advances.

The new minimum wage law isn’t a boon for customers, either. Several fast-food chains in California have already indicated they’ll be forced to raise prices on menu items.

DEI doesn't work: Texas proves DEI programs aren't just wasteful – they've failed. Focus on merit instead.

The new minimum wage law in California will hurt small businesses, too.

Celebrity chef and host of “Restaurant: Impossible” Robert Irvine told Fox News Digital , “We're going to lose about 20-plus percent of our small, mom-and-pop business because what California has actually done is going to enable other states to do the same thing. (It) has opened the gateways to other states to raise that minimum wage.”

Irvine is right: California is sometimes a precursor when it comes to social, political and economic policies. The rest of the country should reject this, full stop.

In fact, there’s evidence residents think life in their beloved Golden State is no longer sustainable. California residents are fleeing in droves , often to states with no income tax like Florida and Texas.

Voters have a chance to reject some of Newsom's liberal policies

One November ballot initiative could stem the tide a little and begin to balance California’s economy. The Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act would require  voter approval for any new California taxes or tax increases and could therefore limit upcoming tax increases at state and local levels. The provision is designed to curb tax increases that often occur without oversight.

Of course, Newsom doesn’t favor the initiative, which is why Californians should.

Progressivism aside for a moment, Newsom shows promise as a Democratic presidential candidate. He’s charming and adept at steering the helm of a behemoth economy, and voters like him.

However, behind the charisma is a leader who has helped derail California – even its once untouchable economy – by implementing progressive policies that hurt residents.

Newsom is a case study in just how important ideology and policy are – socialist ideas in practice can, or should, hurt even the most promising politicians. If he’s serious, he’ll need to position himself toward the center more and start listening to voters when they tell him they want oversight when it comes to state and local taxes.

Decades of progressive policies helped California become a socialist utopia. It was only a matter of time before the economy reacted to tax hikes, hefty regulations and policies that sound progressive but fail to produce positive outcomes.

The minimum wage increase is just the latest example of why California’s economy is starting to struggle and America shouldn’t count on Newsom to fix it. Because even California liberals can spend their way out of a good economy and into one that's highly taxed and heavily regulated, that boasts the highest unemployment rate in the country and is increasingly unaffordable.

American Council on Aging helping older Americans fight inflation

Briana Conner Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The rising cost of living is impacting all of us, but inflation is hitting older Americans especially hard. In particular, it's taking a bite out of the budgets people with fixed incomes live on.

There is help available. However, many people have no idea what they qualify for, leaving an estimated $30 billion on the table each year in unused benefits, according to The National Council on Aging .

The organization works to help connect people with programs that help pay for necessities like food, electricity, rent, and medicine.

There are two ways to find out what kind of help may be available for you or someone you love. You can go to the Benefits CheckUp website to find federal, state, and local resources or call 1-800-794-6559 to interact with a representative who can walk you through the process.

The American Council on Aging's chief customer officer, Josh Hodges, said shame is a key hurdle some older Americans have to overcome.

"There's also a perspective that you've done something wrong to qualify for these benefits. That is absolutely not true. Many people age into older adulthood and all of a sudden have an illness or a fall, and they have to spin through some of their hard-earned savings. So, we want to make sure people understand that these benefits of programs are out there, even if you don't qualify for them this year," Hodges said.

Hodges also said it's a good idea to check the website or call that number periodically because you may qualify for more benefits over time.

As the US Supreme Court hears a historic case, Grants Pass v. Johnson , on criminalizing people sleeping outside, BU social scientists say there are better ways to prevent and end homelessness

Should cities be allowed to ticket or jail people for sleeping outside, even if they have nowhere else to go? That is the question the US Supreme Court will consider April 22 in City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson , when it will decide if local ordinances that punish people for sleeping outside (and for using items like a blanket, pillow, or box to protect themselves from the elements) are considered a “cruel and unusual punishment” under the Eighth Amendment.

As researchers who have focused much of our work on the causes, consequences, and policy solutions to homelessness, we believe they are—and legal experts, including the ACLU and National Homelessness Law Center , make strong cases for this. Moreover, as social scientists who study the most effective responses to preventing and ending homelessness, we also see the case as a time to highlight what works (solutions that focus on housing) and what doesn’t (punitive approaches) to address the nation’s homelessness crisis.

The Grants Pass case comes at a time when the number of people experiencing homelessness in the United States is at an all-time high. After a decade-long period of consistent declines in homelessness between 2007 and 2016, the number of people experiencing homelessness has grown each year since. Between 2022 and 2023 alone, the number of people experiencing homelessness at a given point in time increased by 12 percent —the largest single-year jump on record.

Policymakers at all levels of government are facing increasing pressure to find solutions. In this context, some local officials—including leaders in Grants Pass, Ore.—have attempted to pursue policies that impose fines or jail time for people who bed down on city streets, even when no other alternatives are available. Their goal: deter people experiencing homelessness from staying in the city. Such approaches to homelessness have long been controversial, and the Grants Pass case will decide their fate.

Local leaders argue that they need flexibility to implement laws like the one in question, so they can make progress reducing homelessness in their communities. But policies that criminalize people who are unhoused fail to address homelessness and exacerbate the harm it causes. In a recently submitted amicus brief that we endorse, social scientists gathered evidence showing how the enforcement of anti-homeless laws harms individuals’ health and exacerbates poverty through exposure to environmental hazards, sleep deprivation, fines, incarceration, and lost and destroyed personal belongings. Criminalization measures like the ones enforced by Grants Pass fail to reduce homelessness in public spaces, make no significant impact on public safety, and fail to bridge people to shelters or other service programs that help them exit homelessness.

What works instead? Research we have conducted shows that cities can tackle homelessness through policies that address its root causes. For example, our work shows that as the cost of rent increases in a community, so does the size of its homeless population , and rates of homelessness in a community begin to skyrocket once the median rent in a community exceeds about 32 percent of the median household income. We’ve shown that the impact of rental levels on homelessness persists when looking at different measures of homelessness and rates of homelessness within specific racial groups.

Likewise, we have also documented how rising income inequality is contributing to growth in homelessness via its impact on low-income renters. We’ve also shown that increases across measures of local structural racism —namely inequities across housing, poverty, and criminal justice—contribute to higher rates of homelessness among Black people.

Cities need real solutions. Our colleagues at Boston University have shown that mayors feel accountable to address the issue of homelessness, yet lack the tools to do so. But it’s hard to see how allowing cities to criminalize homelessness will do anything to improve the structural conditions that are the real drivers of homelessness. Instead, communities should pursue solutions that prioritize the one thing that has consistently proven to be effective at addressing homelessness: housing.

More concretely, we know that policies and programs that provide permanent, subsidized housing or shorter-term financial assistance can help people exit homelessness and keep them housed. And we know that, at scale, such strategies can lead to real progress in ending homelessness. Indeed, the US Department of Veterans Affairs has invested heavily in housing-led solutions to homelessness, resulting in a 52 percent decrease in veteran homelessness between 2009 and 2023.

Pursuing policies that have a broader effect on access to quality, affordable housing is also key. For example, our colleagues have demonstrated the critical importance of housing policies—like land use and zoning —to help prevent and end homelessness in the long term. April is National Fair Housing Month, which reminds us that we have tools to prevent race-based housing discrimination, redress histories of uneven urban development, and develop more equitable cities—if we fully enforce our laws and implement our values.

What can you do? First, you can learn more about the Grants Pass case and how to participate in a national week of action . If you have family, friends, or colleagues in Washington, D.C., you could encourage them to attend the Housing Not Handcuffs: Johnson v. Grants Pass Supreme Court Rally at the courthouse on the day of the oral arguments. Finally, regardless of the outcome, you can carry forward knowledge on what works to end homelessness—and what doesn’t—into your own communities.
