GCSE and A-level 2024: What are the grading boundaries?

aqa a level pe coursework grade boundaries

School summer holidays come with both the joy of freedom and the dread of judgement – that’s right, A-level results day is here.

As students find out the fate of their A-levels and beyond in the hands of examiners, some may be packing for gap years or going through the university clearing process, while others may be accepting offers from universities , starting apprenticeships or jobs.

Whichever path you decide to go down, we have put together a guide on the grading system.

When are A-level and GCSE results sent out?

A-level results are out today, on Thursday, August 15, while GCSE results drop on Thursday, August 22.

Grades are available to pick up from 8am.

Schools and colleges will already have told you if it’s possible to receive results by email or post. If you’re receiving them by email, they should drop into your inbox from 8am, and results sent in the post should arrive with the rest of your mail.

What time does Ucas Track update on A-level results day?

Ucas Track updates between 8am and 8.30m on results day, after being frozen in the days leading up to it.

To access Ucas Track you will need your personal ID and password that was used when applying.

How is the new GCSE grading system different and how does it compare?

Since 2017, the A*-G sliding scale has used a number system. New grades are marked from nine to one, with nine as the highest grade and one as the lowest.

Grade nines will exceed an A* mark and make up about 20 per cent of grades seven and above.

Marks nine to seven cover A*-A, six to four for grades B-C and three, two and one for D-G.

Grade U will remain the same.

Why is there a new GCSE grading system?

The current scale allows for a wider range of grades in the top tier of results.

There is now also a distinction between old GCSEs and new, more challenging ones.

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) said: “GCSEs in England have been reformed to keep pace with universities’ and employers’ demands.

“They are based on new and more demanding subject content but are still suitable for the same wide range of abilities.

“It also has higher grades compared to the old A* to G grades, to give sixth forms, colleges, universities and employers the opportunity to better distinguish between students of different abilities.”

What are the new boundaries?

As mentioned, grade nine is for students who have done outstanding work and, of the entire cohort, only five per cent of students will earn a nine. With four as the standard pass and five as a strong pass, this will make it easy for employers and future schools to draw comparisons between the old and new systems.

Grade Boundaries

Grade boundaries for all maths course for the latest syllabus can be found in the interactive table below. Percentage-wise grade boundaries should be:

aqa a level pe coursework grade boundaries

However, boundaries can fluctuate greatly depending on how hard everyone found the papers.  Especially since the new syllabus change in 2017 with first exams in 2018.  For example, A Level Edexcel had very low boundaries in 2019 and 2022 (72% for A* and 55% for A). Grade boundaries also vary between different exam boards due to the varying difficulty of the exams. The order of difficulty of the exam boards in increasing order of difficulty is:

  • Difficulty level 1: AQA
  • Difficulty level 2: Edexcel (the UK version is easier than the IAL)
  • Difficulty level 3: OCR (OCR MEI B is harder than OCR A)
  • Difficulty level 5: Cambridge (Pre-U is the hardest cambridge A Level)

Nicely condensed summaries of grade boundaries can be found by scrolling all the way below the large interactive table.  You can also find downloadable summary table grade boundaries by clicking and downloading the pdfs at the very bottom of the page.

 Further Maths Pathway

AS is a first year course and the end of year exam is only taken if a student is considering dropping Maths (when studying four subjects and dropping to the required three).  So, AS levels are standalone courses, taken alongside – rather than as part of A-levels. This means that they won’t form part of an overall A-level grade (this was not the case before the syllabus change in 2017 though). If one is only taking AS, they will sit 2 exams at end of their first year.  Students cannot get an A* for an AS, only for an A Level.  If one is taking a full A Level they'll they will usually sit 3 exams at the end of their second year (unless taking Further maths also)

Further Maths is like an add-on to the main maths A level.  One will not be able to take Further Maths unless they are also taking A Level Maths, but it doesn’t matter whether sequentially or concurrently.  Obviously, one needs A Levels maths to understand Further Maths, but schools tend to choose their preferred order of teaching the content and when the exams are taken.  A Level Maths’ exams can be completed in the first or second year of study. Content-wise, some schools teach all of A Level in year 12 and Further Maths content in year 13, and some schools try to do both alongside each other over the 2 years. Exam-wise, some students sit A Level Maths in year 12 and then sit Further Maths in year 13, straight after.  Some sit all exams in the final year.

A Level results day 2024: What were this year's grade boundaries for AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and more

Amber Allott

Education writer

  • Grade boundaries are also released on A Level results day.
  • They determine how many marks out of the total you need for each letter grade, from A* right down to E.
  • Grade boundaries differ depending on your exam board.
  • Students had to get more than 72-87% of total marks for an A* in this year’s most popular subject.

The difference between getting an A or a B in your A Level results can be miniscule, and many students and parents alike will be eager to find out just how close they were to scoring a higher grade.

Overall, the number of top A* grades has gone up this year , the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has revealed, but the pass rate in general has fallen slightly. Exam boards have also released their grade boundaries for this year now, which lay out what it took to get different grades.

But what are they this year, and how can you find out the boundaries set for each of your papers? Here’s what you need to know:

What are grade boundaries - and how are they decided?

When they are graded, A Level exam papers are given a number of marks out of the total number available. Grade boundaries are the exact amount of marks needed to achieve each individual letter grade.

Grade boundaries are calculated after examiners see how well students did (Photo: Leon Neal/Getty Images)

They are decided separately by each different exam board every year, which for most students will usually be AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, WJEC or CCEA. They are also released on results day.

The people who decide them are a panel of experts, who meet after all papers for any particular subject have been graded. This is so that how students did overall that year can be factored in, such as if they found it much harder or easier than anticipated. Exam boards say this helps to keep grades and the A Level qualification consistent year-on-year.

What were this year’s grade boundaries?

These vary by each subject, as well as by exam board. Here are a selection of this year’s grade boundaries for some of 2024’s most popular A Level subjects.

Mathematics took out the top spot this year, with more than 100 thousand entries. To get the top mark in each board’s standard advanced maths paper - an A* - you needed to score 86.3% of all possible marks for AQA; 72% for OCR; and 83.7% for Pearson Edexcel.

But to just pass those same maths papers with an E, the lowest passing grade, you’d need to get 24.3% of possible marks for AQA; 14.7% for OCR; and 18.7% for Pearson Edexcel.

To look at a paper from the second most popular subject, psychology, to get an A* you’d need 78.4% of all marks for AQA; 76.3% for OCR; and 58.9% for Pearson. To scrape by with an E, you’d need 22.2% at AQA; 27.7% at OCR; and 17.4% for Pearson.

Although the numbers can often look rather different, it’s important to remember that each exam board’s papers were different too.

The rest of AQA’s grade boundaries for each subject can be found on their dedicated webpage here .

For OCR, this page is here .

For Pearson Edexcel, here’s your page .

For WDEJ, the page is here .

And finally, for CCEA, your full grade boundaries can be found here .

What are the possible A level grades?

There are six possible passing grades you might see on your A Level results. In descending order, these are A*, A, B, C, D and E. If you see any of these listed next to your subject, then congratulations - you have achieved that A Level.

If you have not scored enough marks for at least an E, you unfortunately have not achieved that particular A Level. How this is shown on your results can differ depending on your exam board, but it will usually say something like ‘not classified’, or ‘U’ - short for unclassified.

The government has issued some advice for parents and carers supporting students as they receive their exam results on A Level results day. This can often be a tense and emotionally fraught time, especially if things don’t go as expected. You can check this advice out online here .

Guide to AS and A level results for England, summer 2024

Grading has continued as normal in summer 2024, following the return to pre-pandemic standards last year. Overall A level results are similar to summer 2023.

aqa a level pe coursework grade boundaries

More than 800,000 A level results are being issued to students in England today. Students’ grades have been determined by their performance in their exams and assessments.

Grading has continued as normal this summer, following the return to pre-pandemic standards last year. It is important that grades reflect what students know, understand and can do, to support students in making the right choices about their next steps.

Sir Ian Bauckham, Chief Regulator, said:

Congratulations to all students receiving their results today. This is the culmination of a lot of hard work for them and everyone who supported them on the way.   A levels are highly trusted qualifications. Students can be confident their results will be valued and understood by employers and universities for years to come.

Grading has continued as normal this summer and standards have been maintained from summer 2023.

Overall A level results in England are similar to 2023. Outcomes at grade A and above are 27.6% compared with 26.5% in 2023, and outcomes at grade C and above are 76.0% compared with 75.4% in 2023. Every year there are small fluctuations in results. This can be due to changes in the cohort of students and changes in course choices over time.

Overall AS results in England are similar to 2023. Outcomes at grade A are 23.0% compared with 21.8% in 2023. Entries for AS have fluctuated in recent years, making it much more difficult to interpret any changes.

Today (15 August 2024) we are publishing:

a summary of results (below)

infographics about this year’s A level results

interactive visualisations of  outcomes by centre type, variability in school and college A level results, A level outcomes in England, A level grade combinations, and an interactive map of England showing A level results in different subjects by grade and county

As normal, the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has published results in England for AS and A level, overall and by subject. These results are also shown in our  interactive visualisation .

Centre type results

Ofqual has updated its interactive visualisation to show  A level results for different types of school and college compared with previous years, overall and by subject. The centre type categories are based on the  national centre number (NCN) register  and are self-reported by schools and colleges. Our interactive visualisations only include those schools or colleges that have entries for a particular subject in every year from 2018 to 2024.

Overall results for all types of schools and colleges are, in general, broadly similar to 2023 at grade A and above. When students take exams, the same assessment arrangements apply to everyone. Any differences in outcomes are therefore likely to reflect longstanding trends in the pattern of results for different centre types, and any changes compared to 2023 will reflect changes in attainment.

Cumulative percentage outcomes by centre type – grade A and above

Academies 24.0 25.4 26.5
Free schools 33.4 33.8 37.1

Sixth form college 22.3 22.9 23.8

Centre variability

Ofqual’s interactive visualisation shows  the level of variation  in schools’ and colleges’ A level results compared with 2023. We know that, in any year, individual schools and colleges may see variation in the proportion of students achieving particular grades compared with previous years. This can be due to many different factors, including differences in the mix of students entered for particular qualifications, different teaching approaches, changes in teaching staff or teaching time, and changes to qualifications.

Our interactive visualisation allows users to explore variation in centres’ results for different age groups and sizes of centres.

Equalities analyses

As well as the results breakdowns published today, Ofqual will be repeating the equalities analyses that we have published since 2020. Ofqual makes this information available so that the whole sector can understand qualification results and use this to inform policy making and practice. These detailed analyses consider whether the gaps between results for different groups of students have changed compared with previous years, while controlling for a range of student characteristics. It is important that these analyses control for as many student characteristics as possible, to ensure that meaningful conclusions can be drawn from the results. This does mean, however, that it is not possible for us to complete these analyses ahead of results being issued, because final data from exams is only available very close to results days. We will publish our equalities analyses as soon as we can, in the autumn.

When students take exams, the same assessment arrangements apply to everyone – students’ grades are solely determined by the number of marks they achieve in the assessments, and the same rules apply to everyone taking the same qualification. The gaps between results for different groups of students are therefore likely to reflect long-standing trends in attainment, and any changes this year will reflect changes in attainment. Differential patterns of achievement in qualifications reveal, rather than create, educational disparities. They are an important part of the evidence needed for addressing those disparities.

Grade boundaries

Exam boards have set grade boundaries this summer based on a combination of data and qualitative evidence. As in any year, there has been an important role for examiner judgement. Expert examiners have reviewed the quality of students’ work compared with previous years.

Grade boundaries typically change each exam series and are often different between exam boards. This reflects any differences in the difficulty of the assessments. If an exam paper is harder the grade boundaries will be lower, and if an exam paper is easier the grade boundaries will be higher. This is important to ensure that students are not advantaged or disadvantaged based on the exam paper that they sit. This means that some grade boundaries are lower than 2023, while others are higher.

Grading has taken place as normal this summer and standards have been maintained from summer 2023. Students can therefore be confident in the grades they receive, irrespective of the grade boundaries or how they compare to last year.
