Is There Such a Thing as a Scholarship Application Form?

To cut straight to the chase, the answer is yes and no. There is no such thing as a completely specific scholarship application form (don’t trust those websites selling you one), but there are certain aspects that’ll be the same in each application. You can learn to manipulate those aspects to bring out the best of your experience and knowledge and then write a convincing motivation letter .

There, I’ve said the dreaded word: the key component of many scholarship applications is a motivation letter , and we’re here to dispel any myths surrounding this mystical document.

But, let’s start with the form:

• Personal data. At the beginning of every scholarship application, you must provide your personal information, unless specified otherwise (some institutions may want blind applications, but that is rare). Provide your name, address, means of contact (email/phone number), and possibly the department where you study.
• Information about the recipient. If you’re applying through your university, this will be the main address and the office you’re applying to (e.g. Scholarship Office, University of Better Tomorrow, No 15, Tomorrow Street, 19494 Future). On the other hand, you can apply to various foundations directly, and in this case, you’ll write their address. If you know the name of the person directly responsible for scholarship applications, write that first. Format the two lines of address into two parallel columns: your name in the left corner and the institution in the right.
• What you’re applying for . While DUH! While it is obvious, it is still common practice to write a bolded line like: Application for XYZ Scholarship at ABC Institution.
• Dear Sir or Madam … Although this form of address seems to be going out of style, you can still use it, or you can go for the ‘to whom it may concern’ variant. Again, if you know who’s directly responsible for applications, address the letter to them with proper honorifics (Dr, Prof, etc.)

So, how do you write a proper scholarship application letter? Words like structure, strong vocabulary, and convictions come to mind, and you will need all of them for a successful motivation letter. Before you start, however, you should spend a decent amount of time brainstorming your strengths and how you wish to present them.

The key element of a successful scholarship application is the relevance of your points regarding the open call . For instance, if the scholarship is purely merit-based, you’ll want to highlight your achievements and faculties. On the other hand, if the scholarship is offered by a political foundation, you should provide examples of your engagements that demonstrate how your beliefs align with the ideals of the said organisation.

This does not mean that you need to change your entire personality to fit the proposed standards of a particular organisation – you must, first and foremost, be loyal to yourself . If you’re bringing examples from your childhood, they’d better be extremely related to your reason for studying a particular subject. For instance, if your ant farm tipped over and the ants refused to leave it, you can call that a good inspiration for studying the social behaviour of ants. However, if you study German literature, leave the ants be.

What you should write in this section is a rundown of your most notable accomplishments, which, put together, provide a good reason for you to apply for this scholarship. Since I am not in the position to pay the first installment of the tuition, my enrollment is still pending, even though I have been accepted for Undergraduate studies (Bachelor) in Internet technologies.

I really wish to get the scholarship through which I will have a chance to study in an excellent University and pave a road to my future career and accomplishment of my life goals. It will give me freedom to study without thinking about the future financial burden and relieving my parents from the stress of not being able to support my education.

This scholarship opportunity I perceive as an extraordinary chance to interact with students and scholars from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds coming from all the World. This type of networking is very important for integration of different ideas and perspectives pertaining to diverse global issues.

Scholarships

Upon applying to Loyola you’ll be automatically considered for academic merit scholarships. 99 percent of our students receive some form of financial aid!

Incoming freshman should apply for admission to Loyola by February 15 for full consideration for academic merit and selective scholarships.

First-Year Academic Scholarships

When you apply to Loyola, you are automatically considered for merit-based academic scholarships, ranging from $18,000 to $27,000 per year. These awards are renewable for four years or eight academic semesters. Historically, admitted students who qualified for a merit scholarship applied at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. There is no extra application for academic merit-based scholarships, but there is a separate application required for the Social Justice Scholarship and Ensemble Award within the student's admissions portal. 

All students should apply for Financial Aid by submitting the FAFSA . This will allow you to be considered for Loyola grants as well as federal need-based aid. Loyola's FAFSA Code is 002016.

International Student Scholarships

Merit Scholarships range from $18,000 to $27,000 for qualified international applicants. Generally, students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA to qualify. International applicants are not eligible for federal need-based aid.

Loyola awards a limited amount of need-based aid to international students. To be considered, please complete the application found here . Students can submit the completed form via their application portal , or by emailing it directly to [email protected] .

Honors Scholarship

Students admitted to the University’s Honors Program will be awarded the Honors Scholarship valued at $5,000 per year and renewable for up to four years.  The mission of the University Honors Program (UHP) at Loyola New Orleans is to provide an enriching academic environment that fosters a strong sense of community and challenges our students to utilize their gifts to become men and women for and with others.

Social Justice Scholarship (First Year Sociology majors/minors only)

The Social Justice Scholarship is a financial award and student program that provides a way for Loyola students to live out the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence and the pursuit of social justice. Administered by the Department of Sociology, this program integrates academic learning with social action. Eligible students are first required to major or minor in Sociology and engage in 45 hours of community service per semester while keeping at least a 2.75 GPA. Each month, the Scholars will gather and share a meal together, discuss their service work and share their responses to a common reading that addresses issues of inequality and justice. This shared experience will develop an intellectual foundation that helps Scholars learn to critically analyze social problems and solutions.  This scholarship is only available for incoming first-year students and is renewed throughout the student's four years at Loyola.   You must also submit a separate application for scholarship consideration.

College of Music and Media Scholarships (Majors Only)

Students who are interested in applying to the College of Music and Media should indicate their preferred academic major on their Loyola application. Auditions, interviews or portfolio submissions are a requirement to major in this college. Upon successful completion of these requirements, students will be evaluated for their academic and artistic achievements, and if eligible, will receive one combined scholarship award with their admission letter.

Ensemble Award Scholarship (Non-Music Majors Only)

The Ensemble Award is a scholarship opportunity for non-music majors to participate in our classical or jazz ensembles. Students are awarded a $3,000 scholarship which is renewable for four years as long as the student commits to one major ensemble per semester. In order to be considered for the Ensemble Award, please register for an on campus audition day or submit a video audition by March 1, 2024. 

Ensemble Award Application Requirements:

• An audition or a video audition submission is required to be considered for this scholarship. 
• Students must meet the repertoire requirements specific to his/her primary instrument or voice type.
• This scholarship is only available to classical and jazz musicians for ensembles within Loyola's School of Music. For more information on ensembles, click  HERE .

FACHEX or Tuition Exchange Programs

Loyola University New Orleans participates in both the FACHEX (for Jesuit institutions) and Tuition Exchange programs for benefit-eligible employees of qualifying institutions.   More information may be found here. 

Athletic Student Scholarships

Loyola University New Orleans is a member of the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) competing at the Division I level. Scholarships are available for qualified players. Applicants need to complete the required athletic recruitment questionnaire in order to be considered. 

Loyola is a test blind institution , meaning we do not consider ACT or SAT test scores during the admissions process. However, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), which governs Loyola Athletics, allows test scores to be used as an option to confirm your NAIA eligibility. TOPS Scholarship (Louisiana Residents)

TOPS is a state funded scholarship program for Louisiana Residents that graduate from Louisiana High Schools. Each year the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance updates TOPS requirements and collects information from students, high schools and colleges to determine eligibility for the award. The current award requirements are listed  here . If you want to discuss your TOPS eligibility we advise you to set up an appointment with your high school counselor. 

TOPS money can be used by Louisiana students to assistant in tuition payments at private colleges in Louisiana. Although Loyola is a Test Blind Institution , TOPS is still determined based on GPA and test scores . We think it is important to be able to include the TOPS award in your Financial Aid Award, but cannot do so without the submission of test scores. Upon completion of your Loyola Application, you will see a place to upload a copy of your test scores in your Loyola portal. Please make sure the image of your test score includes all subscores, composite score, your full name, and date of birth. 

If you are unsure if you will qualify for TOPS please seek an appointment with your high school counselor to review your transcript and test scores. 

**LOSFA will also require submission of the FAFSA as part of the requirement to receive TOPS.**

Need-Based Loyola Grants

Students must demonstrate a financial need to qualify for need-based scholarships. To be considered, complete the year appropriate Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and you will be considered for all need-based federal, state, and institutional aid programs. The Loyola University New Orleans FAFSA Code is 002016. We encourage you to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1. Some forms of aid run out, so the earlier you apply, the more likely you’ll receive the maximum award. This grant is also subject to change. 

Transfer Student Scholarships

Institutional merit-based scholarships.

Merit Scholarships range from $15,000 to $21,000 for qualified transfer applicants with competitive cumulative college GPAs. Applicants with less than 12 credit hours will be asked to submit their high school transcript. Loyola is a test blind institution .

Please note: second-degree seeking applicants are not eligible for merit-based scholarships.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Scholarships

Phi Theta Kappa members from two-year community colleges are automatically awarded $3,000 per year.

Private Sources for College Funding

Many “outside” need- and merit-based grants and scholarships are available from private sources—particularly for students who are willing to do a bit of research on their own. Outside scholarships and grants will typically have unique eligibility criteria, applications, and deadlines, so starting the scholarship search sooner rather than later is a good idea!

A number of private organizations award scholarships to Louisiana residents. Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements and application process. Private aid programs provide need-based scholarships, study abroad scholarships, merit scholarships and awards that support students with a particular study interest or talent. 

Study Abroad

Scholarships are applicable to Loyola's academic year Exchange Programs but cannot be used at any "outside" study abroad programs. Some programs do not provide on campus housing. For more information, please contact the Center for International Education.

Undergraduate  

Design & Technology Education MDTechEd

This degree programme qualifies you as a secondary school teacher of Technology Education able to teach practical subjects, graphic communication, design and manufacture, and engineering science.

You can exit after four years with a Bachelor of Design and Technology Education (Honours) with Teaching Qualification (Secondary) or complete your fifth year and qualify with the MDTechEd.

This 5-year programme will provide students the opportunity to develop the breadth and depth of knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary to begin teaching high quality Technology Education. Furthermore, this is the only teaching technology integrated Masters degree in Scotland and is accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Students who successfully complete this programme are eligible for provisional registration with the GTCS.

Programme structure

The Integrated Masters is a five-year programme: Years 1 to 4 consist of core technology and education subjects plus school experience. There is an exit point at the end of year 4 where students can leave with a secondary teaching qualification (Bachelor of Technology with Secondary Education) However, in order to attain a Master of Education Qualification, you would need to complete the year 5 of study. Year 5 consists of two taught courses and a dissertation. 

Years 1 and 2

You will study subjects including technology craft, design, graphics, electronics, mechanics and mathematics. In addition, there will be a focus on learning theory and teaching.

Years 3 and 4

In years 3 and 4 you will further develop your skills and understanding across a range of technology courses by exploring themes such as technology and society, materials and sustainable resources. In year 4, you will select an elective study in subjects such as  Advanced 3D design or Engineering systems & robotics. You will also undertake a final-year project that will develop your skills in practitioner enquiry.

In year 5 you will continue your study of education, research methods and practitioner enquiry in the form of a dissertation. The dissertation aspect of the programme will enable you to form a deep knowledge and understanding of a specific area within design and technology.

Special Glasgow feature

This is an integrated Masters degree with undergraduate entry which will develop knowledge, skills and research within technology education in secondary schools. It will take five years to complete the Masters aspect of the programme; however students will be qualified to teach in schools at the end of year 4. This in turn will help to inform the 5th year of study and research within technology education. Studies throughout the programme will integrate theoretical and research approaches with classroom practice.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.

English language requirements

International english language testing system (ielts) academic module (not general training).

• 6.5 with no sub-test under 6.0.
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes. The University is also able to accept an IELTS test (Academic module) from any of the 1000 IELTS test centres from around the world and we do not require a specific UKVI IELTS test for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme.

Visa requirements and proof of English language level

It is a visa requirement to provide information on your level of English based on an internationally recognised and secure English language test. All test reports must be no more than 2 years old . A list of these can be found on the UK Border Agency website . If you have never taken one of these tests before, you can get an initial idea of your level by using the Common European Framework self-assessment grid which gives you a level for each skill (e.g. listening B1/writing B2 etc.) However, please note that this is not a secure English language test and it is not sufficient evidence of your level of English for visa requirements.

Career prospects

Previous graduates who have studied the Bachelor of Design & Technology Secondary Education have had an excellent record of finding employment as secondary school technology teachers and college lecturers. You are guaranteed one year of employment as a probationary teacher upon graduation and, as a profession, Teaching offers a range of ways to continue with career development. A number of our graduates have gone on to pursue further post graduate studies in a range of areas of Education and beyond.

• Republic of Ireland (RoI) Access Bursary

Glasgow has a long and proud tradition of providing financial support to talented students who, for reasons of financial hardship, might not be able to take a place at university. Our RoI Access Bursary is part of our commitment to continue to attract and support students from a diverse range of backgrounds. For 2023 entry , the RoI bursary will be up to £2,000 for your first year of study and £1,000 for continuing years.

Payments of the RoI Access Bursary will be detailed in your Award Letter.

• The RoI Access Bursary will be awarded as a cash payment.
• The RoI Access Bursary will be paid in 10 instalments from October until July; this award is based on household income
• The RoI Access Bursary will only be awarded in years where tuition fees of £9,250 apply

• Republic of Ireland (RoI) Excellence Scholarship

The RoI Excellence Scholarship of £1,000 for each year of study will be awarded to first degree entrants who have attained at Irish Higher grades  H1, H1, H1, H2, H2 from the Irish Leaving Certificate for 2023 entry . Dentistry, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine applicants are not eligible for this award.

• The RoI Excellence Scholarship will be processed as a cash payment.
• The RoI Excellence Scholarship will be paid in 2 instalments.
• The first payment will be in October and the second payment will be in February.

These payments will be credited to the UK bank account held on your MyCampus profile; therefore, it is vital that this is up to date at the start of the session. By submitting your bank details on the MyCampus system , you are confirming that you agree with the terms and conditions of the award.

• Undergraduate Talent Scholarships

The University of Glasgow is awarding c.50 undergraduate Talent Scholarships to support students who could face financial difficulties in taking up their place to study at the University for 2024 entry. The value of each scholarship is typically £1,500 p.a. for each year of the degree programme, subject to satisfactory progress. Talent Scholarships are available to students entering any of the University's Colleges.

Dental School students are eligible for a Talent Scholarship in their first year of study only. They are eligible for the NHS Dental Student Support Grant in the following years.

• Cowrie Foundation Scholarship

The University of Glasgow and The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation (CSF) will offer a scholarship to support Black African and Caribbean heritage applicants from socio-economically challenged backgrounds.  Applicants must be ordinarily resident in the UK and commencing an undergraduate study in the academic year 2024-25

The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation wants to fund 100 Black British students through UK universities in the next decade. More information on the Foundation can be found here .

• The Clan Gregor Society Prize

The Clan Gregor Society is offering an award to new entrants to the University of Glasgow who descend from Clan Gregor. Prospective students will be asked to submit an application highlighting areas of consideration such as academic excellence and financial need. The award is open to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate applicants for 2024 entry.

Full-time students must apply through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service ( UCAS ). 

SQA applicants who are eligible for our Widening Participation programmes are encouraged to participate in one or more of these programmes, including Summer School, to support your application and the transition to higher education.

International students to Arts, Engineering, Law, Nursing, Science, and Social Sciences   can also apply using The Common Application: however, if applying to more than one UK university, we recommend using UCAS. Applications to Dentistry, Education, Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine must be made through UCAS.

For many college students, immersing themselves in another country’s fashion, cuisine, language, and education system is one of their top checklist items for their college experience.

But as great of an experience as studying abroad can be, for some students, it may be a costly one. While financial aid — including federal financial aid — can, in some cases, support students in their quest to study abroad, students must figure out how to fund their flights, meals, and other expenses regardless. Depending on where a student wants to study abroad, the expense of it can add up.

Fortunately, nonprofits and other organizations offer scholarships that can help students financially in their quest to study abroad.

Keep reading to learn more about scholarships for studying abroad in college, and scholarships you may want to consider applying for if you aspire to study outside of the U.S.

How to get scholarships to study abroad

There’s a plethora of scholarships available for students who want to study abroad during their college years — you just need to know where to look.

For starters, you may want to check with the study abroad office at your college to see if your college offers scholarships for studying abroad — many do — or to see if they keep a list of scholarships specifically for studying abroad that you may be able to access and research.

Second, if you have a program in mind that you’re interested in applying to, you may want to contact that program directly to see if they offer scholarships to U.S.-based students looking to study abroad.

Lastly, you’ll want to browse the variety of government and privately funded scholarships that support U.S. students who wish to study abroad online to see if you qualify for any and then apply. There’s no limit to the number of scholarships you can apply for, so it may be helpful to apply for as many as you’re eligible for and have time to apply for. 

Study abroad scholarships to consider applying for in 2024 and 2025

Below is a list of scholarships you may consider researching your eligibility for and applying for if you’re interested in studying abroad. 

1. The Cobell Scholarship Summer 2024 Scholarship

The Cobell Scholarship provides funding to Native college students who are high-achievers and demonstrate leadership experience. The scholarship is named after banker Elouise Cobell, who was the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit that demanded back payment and improved accounting on Individual Indian Money accounts managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

This scholarship fund offers several different scholarships under its umbrella, including a summer scholarship that aims to support students who want to study abroad.

2. The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarship to Study Abroad

If you’re a woman who’s received a Silver or Gold Award as a Girl Scout with plans to study abroad, you may be eligible for a scholarship from this foundation. Two scholarships offered by the foundation are an academic scholarship to study a foreign language and a scholarship to study abroad specifically.

3. IES Abroad Scholarships

The Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) aims to make academic and cultural opportunities available for students across the globe. It offers several scholarships to support students who want to study abroad that you can apply for using a single application. 

4. Fullbright U.S. Student Program

The Fullbright U.S. Student Program has partnered with 140 countries across the globe to aid graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals to study, research, or teach English abroad. The program offers grants to cover housing and a meal stipend, international travel benefits, and health benefits, among other perks. The award value varies depending on the country in which someone completes the program. 

5. The Henry Luce Foundation Luce Scholars Program

The Luce Scholars Program is a fellowship program awarded to 18 applicants to help them learn about Asian culture. Applicants receive stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement. 

6. Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides $5,000 awards for children and spousal dependents of active or activated U.S. military personnel during the time of application. The award aims to support students who want to study or intern abroad in credit-bearing programs.
