5 Must-Give Winter Break Homework Assignments

It’s almost winter break and your students are going to be at home with family, eating, possibly playing video games, and maybe even enjoying some snow! You want to make sure they are learning, right? Winter break homework is essential! Send home these 5 assignments to give over winter break to make sure your students come back to school ready to learn!

1. Be kind.

Kindness doesn’t cost a thing. First, encourage your students to choose kindness every time they can. Hold the door open for a stranger, bite their tongue when they really want to snap at a sibling or a parent, and do a needed chore without being asked. #Bekind may seem like a trendy mantra for schools, but it’s really a way of life that spreads the holiday spirit. Winter break homework should be all about kindness!

2. Sleep in.

Teachers, students, parents all deserve some rest! When we get time off, we should use it to let our bodies relax. School starts so early for most kids, so give them an assignment to sleep in a bit (with parental permission and without sleeping the whole day away, of course)!

3. Spend some time with people you care about.

No matter what holiday (if any) your students celebrate over the break, hopefully they will be surrounded by people who they love and care about. Keep in mind, this isn’t the case for every student in your school.

For some, school is their happy place, and home is not the best place to be. For these (and really all) students, make sure they know how much you care before they leave for the break. I don’t send my 100+ middle schoolers home with gifts (I have to watch my wallet too), but I try to let them know every day (through words and actions) that I really do care about them. If you’re worried about a student being safe over break, you should let a counselor know. If it’s more than just a worry, make sure to go through the proper channels to report suspected abuse.

4. Take a nap.

Even if your students slept in, they could take a nap (provided they wake up before nap time). I promise, I will be taking a mid-day snooze on December 26 after my sugar cookie coma and Lego overload (holy cow my daughter has some Legos under the tree. . .shh. . .) subsides!

5. Read. . .anything.

OK, this sounds like a true homework assignment, but I am simply recommending for my students to read ANYTHING over break. Turn on the closed captioning on YouTube videos and Netflix shows. Read a blog post or a web article about Minecraft. Take a trip to the library and check out the latest Neal Shusterman Scythe book or an inclusive LGBTQ YA title . Anything goes over winter break. JUST READ!

These 5 homework assignments to give over winter break will have your students back to school refreshed and ready to learn in January! Of course, sending students home with bundles of worksheets, packets, and work is not recommended. “Homework” should be about enjoying time with family and a well-deserved break for teachers and students!

Ahh, winter vacation. Something that teachers and students often look forward to in order to enjoy a well deserved break! However, sometimes this means our students are getting perhaps a larger break from learning than we want them to! I love to incorporate all kinds of winter themed activities this time of year to keep the kids engaged! This fun, free, and editable winter break homework provides a great way for students to keep up some skills and good habits over break, all while still enjoying their time off!

*Pair with our Snow Centers & Activities for Pre-K/Kindergarten !

When my students are away from school for a holiday or extended break, I want them and their families to enjoy the break and not worry about “homework.”

However, I also know that several of them may not do any reading at all over the break (and we know how important reading is!) Unfortunately, this sometimes happens to the ones who need it most.

So I send home this fun little sheet to motivate families to work on some skill building over the two week break. It is simple and kids love to complete it for a little prize ( eraser , candy cane, bookmark ).

Homework Directions

The directions couldn’t be any more simple! The students complete the various tasks on the mugs, and color them in as they do! Easy! Yet still educational and important!

Maybe you don’t teach Kindergarten, or maybe you prefer to have different directions at the top. Good news is that this document is now completely editable!

That’s right, you can type in your own directions as well as your own tasks on the mugs!

Note: I also allow all students the chance to complete the sheet with me for a prize, especially if I know of any situation where they maybe didn’t have parent support to complete it. I will count with them, help them with sight words, etc. and count it as extra practice when they return so that they can feel proud of accomplishing it too!

When I try to print the mugs. All that shows up is the words, no mugs

You’ll want to make sure you are using an updated version of Adobe PDF Reader.

You also want to make sure you are opening the email from a home computer and not at school. District computers tend to not like our emails with links in them.

As the holidays approach it’s always nice to come up with some themed problems for your students to solve in math class. I’m excited to offer these sets of holiday math worksheets organized by grade level. These are great problems from the Sadlier archives that contain strong math content. While they are organized by grade level, you could use these printable holiday math worksheets across grades to differentiate for the various ability levels in your math class.

Holiday & Christmas Math Worksheets

The problems represent a number of themes from the holiday season: snowmen, reindeer, decorations, holiday snacks, jingle bells and sleigh rides, bells, mistletoe, garland, bows, ornaments, poinsettias, toy workshops and even football!

Holiday & Christmas Math Problems for Grades K–2

Kindergarten: Addition and subtraction within ten is the subject using snowmen, reindeer, gingerbread men and bells.

Grade 1: Counting on and the relationship between addition and subtraction within 100 including comparing numbers are used to solve problems about a sleigh ride, decorating the tree with ornaments and jingle bells. A great opportunity to sing the song!

Grade 2: Of course we are starting to get into bigger numbers here and using more than one operation in a problem. Arrays using addition set a foundation for multiplication concepts. Students can discuss Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker , gingerbread cookies and a holiday train ride.

Holiday & Christmas Math Problems for Grades 3 and 4

Grade 3: Students are using, arrays, multiplication patterns to solve problems about mistletoe, garland, bows and poinsettias.

Grade 4: Students take a trip to the holiday museum and solve problems about reindeer and ornaments using the topics of multiplicative comparisons, equations with a variable, and estimation.

Holiday & Christmas Math Problems for Grades 5 and 6

Grade 5: Peppermint cookies and gingerbread houses provide the backdrop for problems about multi-digit multiplication, single digit division, and decimals.

Grade 6: A toy workshop and holiday football are the context for multi-step problems with fractions, decimals, common multiples as well as equations and inequalities.

These free holiday downloads are great for students at each grade level or can be used to differentiate for the different ability levels of students within your class. Download them all to use in the classroom and then spread some holiday cheer and share with co-workers at each grade level!

How to handle winter holiday homework.

In mid- to late-December, it finally and gloriously arrives—winter vacation! But your child may not leave school with an empty backpack. Instead, she may return with one or more homework assignments that must be completed by the first week or two of January.

Winter holiday homework is assigned to students of all ages, from kindergarten to 12th grade. While it is intended to be a small portion of your child’s short reprieve from school, it is still an important one. Homework during vacations can help prevent learning loss, and it can help your student further hone critical academic skills.

As the New Year approaches, assisting your child with her winter holiday homework need not be difficult. Here are three strategies to help you handle this aspect of vacation:

1. Review each individual assignment or the homework packet

Before your student begins her winter holiday homework, carefully review each assignment that she has been given. Her homework may mirror her typical mixture of assignments during the school year (for instance, a one-page paper in AP English Literature and Composition, as well as a specific page range to read), or it may be different (a crossword puzzle that utilizes holiday terms like “snowflake,” for example). If your child is in elementary or middle school, her teacher may send a packet home that outlines expectations and the included assignments. But why is this step important? To start, understanding precisely what is expected of your student during this time period can help you better utilize the strategies that follow below.

2. Set a consistent schedule

Understandably, consistency can be difficult to achieve during the holiday season. You may be traveling to a different city, state, or country; you may be hosting relatives or friends in your own home; or you may be attending multiple holiday parties and festive dinners. With such a hectic and varied schedule, you might be tempted to delay winter break homework until a calmer time—only to realize that this calmer time is just one or two days before the conclusion of vacation. To avoid the panic that naturally results from this situation, set a consistent schedule that suits you and your family. For instance, will your high school student complete one hour of homework every third day? Or will you look at assignments with your kindergarten student for 10 minutes each morning?

3. Divide assignments into smaller portions

If your high school-age child has been tasked with reading three chapters of her AP United States History textbook by early January, consider working with her to segment this assignment into smaller, more manageable portions. For example, if she plans to complete one hour of homework every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, perhaps she can read one chapter on each of these days. This technique also works well for projects. If your elementary school student must investigate your family’s holiday traditions, consider helping her conduct research on one day and assisting with creating a poster board with her findings on another day. Not only does this strategy minimize boredom and burnout, it can also afford you the flexibility you might need during this busy holiday season.

1. (a) Borrow a book from the school library or any other public library or listen to an audio book of your choice downloaded from http://www.loyalbooks.com/ and write a book review in about 100 – 300 words. In the book review mention the following points –

(i). Name of the Book (ii). Name of the Writer/ Editor (iii). Year of Publication (iv). Name of Publisher (v). ISBN Number (vi). Genre - Fiction/ Non-Fiction (vii). Type of Binding – Hardcover/ Paperback (viii). Brief sketch of Major Characters (ix). Which character did you like the most? (x). Why did you like that character? (xi). Which character did you hate the most? (xii). Why did you hate that character? (xiii). Brief description of Storyline/ Plot/ Sequence of Events/ Chronology of Events (xiv). Did you like it, or did you dislike it? Why did you like or dislike it? (xv). Was the printing easy to read and clearly visible? (xvi). How is the quality of the pages?

1. (b) Write an article/ story/ poem/ travelogue/ biography (of your icon)/ bio sketch (of a family member whom you admire) for the school magazine. It should be an original work. It MUST NOT be copied from any source whatsoever. If you are inspired by anybody else’s written/ creative / literary work, then do mention the source and give credit to the original writer. Submit a neatly typed soft copy (Font Times Roman, Size 12) through WhatsApp or Email. Write your full name, roll number, class, section in the end of your write-up/ creative writing.

Draw a picture from any of the following lessons in an A4 size white paper under Art Integrated Learning Project Work and submit the A4 size paper after the Summer Vacation - Tiger King/ Deep Water. Imagine yourself to be an employee or an entrepreneur and then think of the impact of the pandemic on your job and your enterprise. What would you prefer - Work From Home or Work From Office? Justify your preference by giving viable arguments and evidence.

Did you enjoy the lockdown and online classes from home or did you look forward to the reopening of the school and start of offline classes? Connect things with your real life and build upon your experiences to arrive at a conclusion about the impact of the Work From Home culture resulting from the pandemic. 

Research and find out more about Work From Home and its impact on mental health. Find out the advantages and disadvantages. Make a list of all the advantages and also of all the disadvantages. Establish a connection with your own life and experiences during the pandemic and reflect upon it. Write about your reflections (experiences, thoughts, understandings and ideas) in the form of a paragraph or paragraphs. 

Then do the following -

Make a Questionnaire of 20 Questions. Get 20 copies of the same printed and conduct a survey among people around you, especially those who are employed and have worked during the pandemic or lost their job or source of earning during the pandemic. 

If you are interviewing a person who doesn't understand English, then you may translate the questions and options and take a video recording of the interview as proof. In such a case you may fill up the questionnaire yourself on behalf of that person. 

Collect their responses and based on their responses write a report of 800-1000 words. First make a rough draft and then show it to the teacher for approval and only after that make the final report.

HOW I SPENT MY HOLIDAY DURING LOCKDOWN

"You must be wondering about how I spent my Summer Vacation. 

The vacation started with the announcement that there won't be any vacation for me since I am the Exam I/C and Class 10 Result has to be prepared and uploaded. CBSE sent a document which presented a very complicated system of making the result. I thought over it. It was difficult. It was extremely cumbersome especially because of my lack of knowledge about computers and complicated mathematical calculations. But I didn't give up. I chose to face the challenge. 

I spent two sleepless nights and came up with a solution. I made a software based on Microsoft Excel to calculate the Class 10 Result for the students of session 2020-21 as per CBSE guidelines. The software made the job very easy for then the excel file did all the complicated calculations and that also correctly. My hard-work made the job easy for the other teachers. Although the making of the software was exhausting, yet in the end it felt good for through it I was able to help other teachers.  Now as I write this, the result is getting ready to be uploaded in the CBSE website. The final uploading again has to be done by me. 

After the process of Class 10 Result uploading is complete, I have to initiate the process of Class 12 Result uploading. The pandemic has definitely increased by workload exponentially but then at the same time it has provided an invaluable opportunity to learn new skills. 

I love writing and I find it soothing. So, however busy I may be, I always find some time to write. Since the last few months, I was working on a book on human relationships.  Finally, I completed the book and soon it will be available as a Kindle e-book at amazon.in. Kindle Direct Publishing is a great way to publish your writings as an e-book. The best part of the deal is that it doesn't cost you anything.  You can check out the books published by two students of the school in the following LINK .

The next thing that I did was to delete my GoDaddy website for it was costing me a lot of money and the service was not good. I did a little research and relaunched my new website through sites.google.com . The google service is completely free. I just had to buy a domain for about Rs 1000 for one year. The domain has to be renewed every year. My new domain address is eng-e-classroom.com. 

In the mean time there was a constant stream of work being assigned to me by the school administration. In one such assignment, I helped collate the examination related data for the Vidyalaya Plan 21-22. In case you are wondering as to what exactly is a Vidyalaya Plan, then let me tell you that every year a stock of performance and resources of the Vidyalaya is planned in order to make the school more productive. All the schools have to submit a plan of many pages to the concerned Regional Office.

I also helped organise the pending Practical Exam for Class 12. The schedule is fixed. Hopefully the online viva voice will be a hassle free experience. My past experience has taught me that it is easier to hold an offline exam than an online exam. Many students often come up with many excuses for not attending the exam. Lack of device access and network connectivity issue is a hot favourite among the students. May be this time they won't give any excuse and attend the viva voice without any issues.

In the doing of the daily household chores, it was my responsibility to clean and wash the utensils after my wife had cooked and after we had our food. I don't mind doing that. In a strange way it feels good to wash utensils under running water. The only trouble was with the 5 liter pressure cooker. It is heavy and becomes rather slippery after the application of the dishwashing gel. I don't like washing the pressure cooker and there is nothing soothing about it.

I loved taking out the dog for a walk. Since there was no school, therefore I got time to spend with my dog. My dog loves to go for a walk. The walk is not that important but the smells in the neighborhood definitely are. That is true for all dogs because they know their world through their nose. I also took the dog to the vet a few times for vaccination and for a skin infection to be treated. One day I even went to school to give two bags of dog food for the stray dog at school. Earlier I had made an arrangement with one of the school staff to provide the dog food daily during the vacation. 

The pandemic has ruined by visit to a cinema hall to watch a movie. So, I explored Netflix. After an extensive search, I found a series to my liking. I completed watching all the episodes (about 100) of that web series through Netflix. The title is 'The 100'. It is an intriguing post apocalyptic story of human survival on Earth, in space and in other planets. 

I am also planning to celebrate my wife's birthday. It will be a low key celebration for the pandemic protocol doesn't allow a social gathering. Then my paternal aunt died and I took part in the funeral rite and rituals. A birthday and a funeral. It is a strange combination but then that's how life is.

I also read a few story books and lots of online news articles especially at BBC website. I listened to a few podcasts of Hidden Brain and finished listening to a retelling of the stories of Mahabharata available online through Google Podcast. 

Well, there are many other day-to-day activities that I did to continue with life as best as I could during the pandemic. I couldn't travel to any place far for the curfew except an occasional drive to the market to get the essentials. I also talked a lot with my parents over the phone as I couldn't travel to my home because of the pandemic. I then clicked a lot of photos with my cellphone and shared those with my friends and family. 

I got my second dose of the COVID19 vaccine and also got my wife vaccinated (the first jab). 

A few more days are left to the vacation. Hopefully I will be able to do a few more constructive things and find contentment through creativity.
