NOTE ON DEADLINES:
Thesis approval deadlines are for having your thesis fully approved in cIRcle, not just submitted. You are expected to submit at least five days ahead of any deadline in order to allow yourself time to make any needed corrections.
Students submit final versions of theses/dissertations to the UBC Library's electronic repository, cIRcle.
You may be required to submit paper copies to the department head, graduate program advisor, external examiner, and members of your supervisory committee and/or the final examining committee. Please confirm the required number with your research supervisor or graduate program.
All required forms must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies before you can be authorized to submit to cIRcle.
Thesis or Dissertation Approval forms must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by your graduate program. The program will ensure that the form is complete and that the signatures/endorsements are genuine, and will forward the form to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies on your behalf.
It is preferable for you to submit the Thesis/Dissertation Cover Sheet to your program office at the same time as you submit the Thesis or Dissertation Approval form, so that forms arrive as a complete package.

Delay in Publication of your Thesis
If you want to request a delay in publication of your thesis in the UBC Library's online repository, you must do this before you submit electronically. See Delaying Publication of your Thesis for information and instructions.
Corrections
Submission of a thesis that meets the formatting requirements is your responsibility. Approximately 30% of the theses submitted to cIRcle require changes and if the thesis does not meet formatting requirements it cannot be approved. You will be required to make corrections and re-submit the thesis at a later date. Any delay caused by correcting and re-submitting the thesis is your responsibility, and may cause you to miss important deadlines.
You are welcome to send an electronic version of your thesis to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for a pre-review early on in the writing process.
Note: You cannot make any further changes to your thesis after it has been accepted into cIRcle.
Thesis Receipt
Once the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies has approved your thesis you will receive official confirmation by email which will be copied to your graduate program. Your graduate program is not complete and cannot be closed until the Faculty has issued this receipt.

DEVELOPMENT OF PASSIVE VISION BASED RELATIVE STATION KEEPING FOR UNMANNED SURFACE VEHICLES
Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) offer a versatile platform for various maritime applications, including research, surveillance, and search-and-rescue operations. A critical capability for USVs is maintaining position (station keeping) in dynamic environments and coordinating movement with other USVs (formation control) for collaborative missions. This thesis investigates control strategies for USVs operating in challenging conditions.
The initial focus is on evaluating traditional control methods like Backstepping and Sliding Mode controllers for station keeping in simulated environments with disturbances. The results from these tests pointed towards the need for a more robust control technique, like deep-learning based control for enhanced performance.
The thesis then explores formation control, a crucial aspect of cooperative USV missions. A vision-based passive control strategy utilizing a virtual leader concept is proposed. This approach leverages onboard cameras to detect markers on other USVs, eliminating the need for direct communication and potentially improving scalability and resilience.
Then the thesis presents vision-based formation control architecture and the station keeping controller evaluations. Simulation results are presented, analyzed, and used to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. Finally, the thesis discusses the implications of the findings and proposes potential future research directions
