Perfecting your personal statement

Your personal statement is an essential part of your UCAS application, providing you the opportunity to highlight your skills, experience and future ambitions. However, getting your personal statement right isn’t always easy so our Undergraduate Recruitment Manager, Danni, shares her advice on how to make yours stand out.

Preparation is key

Start by creating a plan and remember that you can only write one personal statement as part of your UCAS application, so avoid mentioning any universities by name. Look at the descriptions of the courses that you are interested in and identify the key skills, qualities and experiences that are mentioned within the course description as this will help you to make a list of what to include. Make sure that you explain the reason why you are interested in that particular subject area and think about how studying that subject will fit with your future career aspirations. You could have excellent skills, qualities and experiences to share but if they’re arranged in a poorly written statement the impact will be vastly reduced. A well written, clearly structured personal statement will not only make the information stand out but will also evidence your ability to structure written work, a crucial skill for university.

Evidence your passion

We want to know what drives you, so make sure you show your enthusiasm. Begin by explaining why you are applying for the course and what interests you about the subject. Include examples; as Danni says , “don’t just say that you like a subject, demonstrate how you have an interest for that subject” . Are you enthusiastic about the subject because you have completed extra studies, obtained work experience, or written blogs? These key examples are crucial. Danni mentions that “much of your university work will need to be based upon evidence, so it’s useful to demonstrate this in your personal statement. We do understand you have a word limit so keep your examples clear and concise.” For example, if you mention work experience, talk about a particular day or challenge that taught you something rather than stating 'I did work experience, it was good’.

Identify skills you’ve developed

You can also mention activities outside of school that will help to support your application. “It’s good to include what extra-curricular activities you have done as this can demonstrate that you are a well-rounded individual,” says Danni. So when you talk about the sport you take part in, the instrument you play, or the Saturday job you have, explain the skills they're helping you develop. Team sports teach resilience and communication. Music requires patience and application. Any job demands ambition to be good at it, and your experience can teach you how to work well within a team. We’ve also all been impacted by Covid-19 this year so don't be afraid to refer to the pandemic and include any hobbies that you have picked up during that time or the skills that you may have developed. All these points help to provide a well-rounded picture of you.

Create a flow through a clear structure

If you only take away one thing from this blog, it should be to make sure that your personal statement has a clear beginning, middle and end. Try to aim for a punchy opening line but don’t spend days worrying about those first few words. “Don’t overly stress about having the perfect opening line,” says Danni, “it doesn’t necessarily need to be a bold or outlandish statement. It should flow nicely into the main body of your personal statement.” Think about your closing paragraph in the same way. Your conclusion should nicely summarise what has been mentioned previously - if it does that, it has done its job.

Proofread your statement

Finally, it’s also important to remember the basics. Spell check what you’ve written and read over it a couple of times before you submit it – typos can easily happen! We would also suggest getting someone else to read through it –  they may spot something you’ve missed or have other examples you could include that you may not have considered. It’s always worth discussing your personal statement with others; what you think may not be worth including could be considered really interesting by someone else.

Length of University of Warwick Personal Statement

The University of Warwick personal statement is usually between 500-1000 words. However, some departments have specific requirements which you need to adhere to. Ensure you read the course page properly for what they want you to write about

Personal Statement Writing Tip for University of Warwick

• Ensure that your statement is clearly outlined with paragraphs that follow each other
• Run your statement for grammar and spelling errors.
• Use concise sentences. Avoid too much technical jargon.
• Your statement must be written in the English language.
• Don’t use your statement to repeat details that could be found in your CV and transcript.
• Avoid repeating your CV as your statement. You can make references to certain things on your CV, after all your CV is your academic and professional story, but avoid just listing everything you have there.
• This is your statement, so, write your statement and avoid using “inspirational quotes” from business leaders or other public figures.
• Using the same generic statement for all your applications will hurt you. Take the responsibility to tailor your statement to the specific course and school that you’re applying to.
• Information about people and activities that are not relevant to your study should be avoided. You can include information about your hobbies / voluntary work etc., but you must explain how these relate to the course you have applied for or prepared you for study.
• Avoid cliché statements like “since I was young, I have always been fascinated about…”  Here are some personal statement buzzwords to avoid in your statement.

University of Warwick Personal Statement Sample

My desire to pursue an MBA at the University of Warwick stems from my interest to run an IT company in the nearest future. As a professional who has spent the last 8 years of my career selling and marketing IT solutions to financial, fast-moving consumer goods, and telecommunications companies, I have come to understand certain consumer preferences and I am accepting an adventure into the world of business administration and management. I see this program as an important commitment and investment to achieve my future goals because an MBA study will expand my views on core business functions such as marketing, finance, accounting, leadership and management.

On the professional front, I have dealt with challenging and dynamic work requirements and have always managed to deliver excellently to meet both organization and client needs. This has greatly improved my decision-making abilities and analytical skills. The opportunity to explore fresh knowledge and better ideas to approach business solutions has also added to my growth. Two years ago, I landed a role as a service Delivery Manager which requires me to manage a pool of engineers and customers ensuring optimal delivery of support services and resolution of issues. This was a big challenge for me as I had to be creative in solving issues for our customers and ensuring they get value for their money. Also, I saw the need for people management especially with the engineers, making sure they are delivering promised services. Motivated by this achievement, I started looking for fresh avenues to learn about management, and leadership in a formal setting, I believe that the knowledge will extend my capacity to deliver effective and efficient business.

While I could have chosen to enrol for this degree in any other country, I am choosing to return to the United Kingdom because of the level of experience and exposure I gained during my first Masters at Middlesex University London. Also, I find the MBA program of the University of Warwick more rewarding for my time and investment. The recognition that comes with a Warwick MBA degree is among the best you can get anywhere in the world, the program is developed with hands-on practical teaching to address the current changes in the business world while giving strong emphasis to leadership and management skills that are relevant to become an effective business leader. Modules such as Managing in a New World, Operations Management, Global Business and Entrepreneurship are of particular interest to me.

I have planned my career after this program to suit the growing financial technology industry. So, after this program, I look forward to joining a Fintech or IT servicing company in the short term where I can create immediate contribution either in the position of an IT manager, Chief Information Officer, Information systems manager, IT business Analyst where I’ll gain further exposure on running a business before moving forward to start mine.

My strong points include creativity, hard work, accountability and proactivity. When I am out of work, I enjoy playing chess and scrabble, because of the dynamic nature of these games; I have come to realize that whether in victory or defeat, the activities helps me to embrace growth and improvement. I believe that I will make an excellent addition as one of the students for this program. I bring with me valuable experience from my career and previous master’s degree which has enabled me to understand what is required to achieve academic success in the UK.

What is a personal statement.

The UCAS personal statement is an important piece of writing you need to put together for your UCAS application .

It is where students should sell themselves in order to try and secure a place at their chosen universities . This includes your strengths, achievements, interests and ambitions, and you need to convey why the university should choose you over other candidates.

How do I write a personal statement?

We recommend you start by making some notes about what you want to study at university and why, as well as a list of skills and interests, and your gap year plans (if you have any).

We then suggest reading some example personal statements for inspiration, and to see how previous students have successfully applied for courses at university.

This should give you an idea of how to put your own statement together, starting with an attention-grabbing opening that explains what aspects of your subject you enjoy and why.

The next few paragraphs need to cover your relevant work experience and activities outside of school, as well as your interests or hobbies, and anything else you’ve done related to your subject that isn’t already on your UCAS form.

The final paragraph should round off your statement succinctly and talk about your future plans after university, and how a degree can help you achieve these.

Remember that the language you use and the way it is laid out will be judged too, so it’s important to get all aspects of your statement right.

Once you’ve written your personal statement, ask family, friends and tutors to read it and give you some feedback. Look through their comments and amend your statement accordingly (if you feel they improve it).

Try to ask for several rounds of feedback to make sure it's as good as it can be before sending it off.

How do I start a personal statement?

The first rule with opening your personal statement is to avoid using any cliches or over-used phrases or sentences that the admissions tutors have seen a million times before.

These include: "ever since I was young/a child", "I have always wanted to be..." and "for as long as I can remember".

If you want the reader to go to sleep or immediately put your UCAS form in the rejection pile, then this is a sure way to go about it.

Instead, try to put together an eye opening sentence or two that will grab their attention and make them want to read on.

Our example personal statements above will help you with this, by showing you how students have constructed successful statements in the past.

Many students choose to start their statement by talking about a specific aspect of the subject they enjoy most and why they are interested in it. Others choose to relate a life experience (avoiding cliches) from their younger days, while some decide to begin their statement in another way.

There's no right or wrong answer - just make sure it doesn't read like hundreds of other statements the tutors have already seen before!

How do I end a personal statement?

You should conclude your personal statement with a concise summary of why you are an ideal candidate for this course, your career plans, and any other ambitions you have for the future.

Try to keep it to no more than three or four lines, but make sure the content sells you as a person and has a positive tone that will encourage admissions tutors to offer you a place.

Take a look at your initial notes to help you - remember, it doesn't have to be perfect at this point, as you will have time to redraft it later.

Again, our example personal statements above will provide you with some inspiration for this part of your personal statement (but please don't copy any of them, or UCAS will penalise your application!).

How do I structure my personal statement?

Your personal statement should have a clear beginning , middle and end.

Structure is important if your statement is to be a coherent creative piece of writing, so all the paragraphs should flow nicely together.

At Studential, we recommend the following approach as a guideline:

• Paragraph 1: Introduction to your subject, the aspects you’re interested in and why
• Paragraph 2: What you have done related to the subject that isn’t already on your UCAS form
• Paragraphs 3 and 4: Work experience placements and relevant extracurricular activities at school
• Paragraph 5: Your interests and hobbies outside of school, particularly those that show you are a responsible and reliable person
• Paragraph 6: Your goal of attending university and a memorable closing comment.

Of course, you may wish to structure yours differently and it's entirely up to you at the end of the day - just remember to make sure it's coherent and flows together well.

What makes a great personal statement?

Tell the reader why you're applying to this particular course and university – include your ambitions, as well as what interests you about the subject, the course provider, and higher education.

Think about what makes you suitable – this could be relevant experience, skills, or achievements you've gained from education, work, or other activities.

You need to show the admissions tutors why you make a perfect candidate for your chosen course, and what value you can bring to their department.

What should you not write in a personal statement?

Avoid these common mistakes if you want your personal statement to be successful:

• Listing your skills, experience etc. Use full sentences and examples to back everything up.
• Any form of negativity - be positive!
• Omitting any relevant skills or achievements
• Embellishing the truth or lying outright
• Not checking for spelling and grammar issues - this sort of sloppiness just tells the admissions tutors you don't care very much
• Not asking for feedback from friends, family and teachers - this is a great way of receiving objective advice
• Stating the obvious or repeating what is already mentioned on your UCAS form elsewhere
• Including over-used words, phrases and sentences, such as "ever since I was a child..." and "I have always wanted to be...".
• Using jokes or humour - this isn't the time or place, and the admissions tutors probably won't appreciate it!

How long should my personal statement be?

For undergraduate courses, UCAS allows students up to 4,000 characters for their personal statement.

This isn't a huge amount of space, so you need to make sure every word counts and you sell yourself in the best possible light at all times!

Once you have put together an initial draft, you can check if it's too long or short with our personal statement length checker .

When should I start writing my personal statement?

We recommend you begin writing some notes during the school summer holidays, and maybe even have your first draft written before going back in September (especially if you're applying to Oxbridge ).

The sooner you start writing, the sooner you can get your final draft in place ready for your UCAS form. This also helps to take the pressure off, and means you won't be rushing to get it done at the last minute.

• This is your opportunity to sell yourself - so use it! Talk about your strengths, abilities, achievements, personal traits, hobbies, extracurricular activities and anything else relevant that makes you an amazing candidate for this course.
• Start writing your personal statement early - ideally over the summer holidays, which give you plenty of time to get a perfect statement in place by the autumn (this advice especially applies if you are applying to Oxbridge , or for medicine , veterinary science , or dentistry ).
• Make sure you back up everything you say with solid examples, using your initial notes to help you.
• Talk about your motivations for choosing this particular course, and showcase all strengths using your own voice.
• Don’t embellish the truth or lie outright (you’ll get caught out at the interview!), and don’t use humour or tell jokes (this isn’t the time or place).
• Use positive language and let your enthusiasm shine through - tutors only want students on their course that are passionate about their subject!
• Don't get someone else to write your statement for you, or buy/plagiarise a statement online. UCAS check statements for similarity, and your chances of being offered a place at university could be affected if they find you have cheated on your statement.
• Ask those you know and trust to provide you with feedback, and incorporate their comments and suggestions accordingly.
• Go through at least several rounds of feedback before polishing your statement into a final draft.
• Don't just rely on a Spellchecker to check your statement for errors - read it through carefully three or four times to make sure there are no spelling or grammar mistakes.
• Use an reputable personal statement editing service if you're struggling with your final draft, or just want to try and give it some extra shine!

Thanks for the question. The main thing to focus on in your Personal Statement is your interest in the course itself - why you want to study Business. Other things - interests, wider reading, other experience - should be related to why you want to study the course. Normally we suggest that around 75% of the Personal Statement should be about the course, and 25% should be about extra-curricular activities. But again, try to relate everything to why you want to study that subject at university level.

What kind of extra curricular activities should I mention? Are you only interested in business related?

The Personal Statement should include activities you do regularly, which you can reflect on in relation to the skills you have learnt and the relevance to the course. Try not to just write a list of things you do. It is better to write about a few things you can reflect on.

I'm interested in applying to dual subject. How should i balance this within my statement?

If you are applying for a course which combines more than one subject, try to give equal attention to all the subjects. You should also try to link them together - how do you think the study of each subject will complement the other? For example, you could comment on the importance of studying law as it relates to businesses. In addition to the personal statement you need to be aware of the subjects required by the Business School at A Level or equivalent qualifications.

Hi, can you tell me the kind of things I should include in my personal statement. I am considering applying for MORSE.

Thanks for the question. Your Personal Statement should be about why you want to study this subject at university. We usually suggest that students focus about 75% on the subject and 25% on other interests, but try to relate everything you do to the course itself. However, we know that Warwick is one of the few places to run MORSE, so it's likely that applicants also apply for other related courses at other universities such as Statistics or Maths. So in the Personal Statement for MORSE we are not looking for you to explain in detail why you want to study this course at Warwick. We are just looking for a general interest in and commitment to studying Maths and Statistics.

How many places do you have available for international students for MORSE - what is the split between UK and international?

The overall intake for the Statistics department each year is around 70 Home/EU students and around 70 international students. So the split is equal, although this may vary each year.

Is it fine to mention personal reading in the introduction in addition to other information or does personal reading have to be towards the end of the personal statement?

It is fine to mention personal reading at any point within the Personal Statement. There is no formula for how the Personal Statement should be structured. However, it IS important that student REFLECT on the reading they have done. For example, it is better to write about one or two books, reflect on the arguments within these books, say what you agree with and disagree with, etc., than to simply give a long list of books.

It's fine to use quotes in your Personal Statement. However, you should make this relevant to yourself and to the course, and reflect on why this is an important quote for you.

I've heard that usually the first few lines of a Personal Statement should be very attention grabbing and I feel mine doesn't exactly meet that requirement as of now. Also I have heard that mentioning too many achievements in a Personal Statement is not a very good idea as it could come across as 'blowing your own trumpet'! However in order to substantiate my academic strengths and to portray why I am the right candidate, I was eager to mention the fact that I have won an award in school for 7 years of consecutive academic excellence. Would that be okay?

It's fine to mention these achievements. However, as I mentioned, a list of achievements by itself doesn't tell us that much. In the Personal Statement we want to hear about YOU and why you want to study the course.

Are all applications followed by an interview?

Only a few courses (e.g. Theatre and English Literature) have interviews. Most courses do not interview. For courses which do offer interviews we arrange an alternative for overseas students, such as a written task or telephone interview.
