Apple exclusive: This is how Apple Watch 9 redefines the smartwatch with S9 chip

Double tap is just the beginning

I recently experienced a truly magical moment with the Apple Watch Series 9 . And that's thanks to Double Tap , a new feature on both the Apple Watch 9 and and Apple Watch Ultra 2 that’s just become available via the watchOS 10.1 update. Double Tap lets you perform various actions just by tapping your thumb and index finger in mid-air.

It took a couple of tries for me to get it just right, but once I got the hang of it, I was hooked. I knew as soon as I was able to respond to my brother ’s text with a Double Tap, speak my reply and then send my message with another double tap — all while I had my hands full grilling up dinner.

This is just one Apple Watch 9 feature that wouldn’t be possible without the new S9 chip that powers Apple’s latest watch. Yes, this SiP (system in package) delivers overall performance improvements, but the S9 is really about redefining what a smartwatch can do, and it goes well beyond Double Tap.

I had a chance to sit down with both Eric Jue, director of Apple Watch product marketing, and Eugene Kim, vice president of hardware engineering, to learn more about the S9 chip and what it unlocks on the best smartwatches you can buy.

What makes the S9 tick

The S9 chip itself is technically impressive because it uses the same underlying architecture as the A16 Bionic on the iPhone 14 Pro series while also packing a new 4-core Neural Engine that can process machine learning tasks up to twice as fast compared to the Apple Watch Series 8 . And that’s all while maintaining the same 18-hour battery life Apple’s wearables are known for.

“The GPU is 30% faster than previous generations,” said Kim. “And that really helps with the animation and the beautiful layers and transparencies that make watchOS 10 delightful and easy to use.”

But tech specs are not the things that get Apple excited about developing a new watch. It’s about delivering new experiences that simply were not possible before through a combination of hardware and software.

And unlike, say, the iPhone 15 vs iPhone 15 Pro , which leverage different A16 Bionic and A17 Pro chips, the S9 chip is available on both the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to deliver the same set of core experiences.

Siri gets supercharged

a photo of the Apple Watch 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2

One of the things Apple wanted to do with Apple Watch Series 9 was speed up Siri , and there was plenty of incentive to do that. Apple Watch Siri requests average 160 million per week and there’s 90 million dictation requests per week. The best way to supercharge Siri was to move the processing from the cloud right to your wrist.

“With the [Apple Neural Engine’s] improved performance capabilities, not only can we enable real-time speech recognition, we also have a larger, more advanced transformer model that improves dictation by up to 25%,” Kim said.

But it’s not just about making Siri more responsive. You can ask things about your health that you couldn’t before, like “How many steps did I take today? How am I doing on my activity range? How many hours did I sleep last night?”

Apple Watch 9 users can also log their weight for the day, their medications, blood glucose levels and more via Siri.

“We already know that using your voice on the Apple Watch is oftentimes the fastest way to do something, whether it's to send a message or to send a timer or make a reminder or whatever,” said Jue. “This is just an extension of that.”

Double tap — your new magic wand

Apple Watch Series 9

Because Double Tap runs on the ANE (Apple Neural Engine), it’s fast, accurate and power efficient, allowing us to run in the background continuously and not impact battery life. Eugene Kim, VP, Apple

The beauty of the new double tap gesture on the Apple Watch is that you can use just one hand to perform common actions without having to touch the display. Once you bring your index finger and thumb together twice quickly, you can open the Smart Stack from the watch face to scroll through your widgets, answer and end phone calls and take a photo from your iPhone with the camera remote feature.

Double tap is enabled by a new sensor fusion algorithm that runs on the new S9. It uses input from the optical heart rate sensor, accelerometer and gyroscope to detect when a user does a double tap gesture. The algorithm can detect not just tiny wrist movements but also changes in blood flow when your index finger and thumb come together.

“And because it’s run on the ANE (Apple Neural Engine), it’s fast, accurate and power efficient,” said Kim, "allowing us to run in the background continuously and not impact battery life.”

According to Apple, the previous ANE on the S8 chip wasn’t powerful enough to run the new double tap gesture. “It would have required the main CPU, and that’s an order of magnitude more energy to run.” said Kim.

For now, Apple has not yet offered an API specific to double tap, but developers can tap into Double Tap through the notification API. The developer can specify which of the options are the primary action, allowing a double tap to perform that.

Never lose your iPhone again

Okay, that’s a hefty claim. But the S9 SiP certainly makes it much, much harder to lose your iPhone at home, thanks to a second-gen Ultra Wideband chip that’s part of the package.

This 2nd gen UWB chip enables Precision Finding for the iPhone 15 series, which gives you distance and direction along with visual, haptic and audio guidance right on your watch.

As you get closer to your iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus , iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max , you’ll see the graphic morph from a simple display of the feet remaining to a directional guide to make sure you stay on the right track. And it’s good to see this upgrade since Apple says that this feature is used more than 40 million times a month.

“The second generation radio really improves things with three times the range, but also by being two and a half times more power efficient,” said Kim. And, yes, the same precision finding works the other way if you lose your Apple Watch.

While I’m excited by what the Apple Watch 9 can do now with the S9 chip, I’m very intrigued to see what happens next. For example, I very much want Apple to fully open up Double Tap to developers.

Imagine if you could summon an Uber with a double tap or if you could double tap in a restaurant via the OpenTable app to let your waiter know you’re ready for the check. There’s lots of possibilities.

And I could see Siri becoming much more helpful as it gets infused with more AI smarts — and Apple is reportedly investing $1 billion a year to do just that. For example, I could ask “How do I beat my 5-mile best time?” and Siri might come back with running tips based on my previous runs.

This is what the future of smartwatches feels like.

The Apple Watch Series 9 ups the max brightness to 2,000 nits and includes Apple's new Double Tap gesture feature.

According to Apple, the S9 SiP processor will bring a 30% percent increase in processing power over the last version of the Apple Watch. And thanks to the Series 9's new neural engine, Siri requests are run on the watch, not from the cloud, making responses faster and 25% more accurate. Starting a workout or waiting for Siri to transcribe your voice into a Messages response should be a much faster affair than with previous versions of the Apple Watch. What’s more, the new S9 chipset is more power efficient, which means more time between charges. During Apple’s presentation, the company claimed that Series 9 Apple Watch users can expect up to 18 hours of battery before it needs to be recharged. And ultrawide band connectivity will allow you to find your iPhone with greater accuracy.

One of the Series 9's most interesting new features is Double Tap: simply tap your index finger and thumb together, twice, to answer a call, navigate through your smart stack or control any number of actions in an app.

Apple Watch 9's features have as much to do with Vision Pro as the watch

There's more to these gestures than you might guess

Apple Watch Series 9 gesture

The Apple Watch Series 9 turned out to be a bigger upgrade over the Watch Series 8 than we expected, though admittedly at first glance it could seem a little uninspiring.

There’s no new screen design, no major refresh to the look beyond a new coat of pink paint, if that’s your bag. However, what we see here could become a near-essential part of Apple ’s vision of the tech future, with the Vision Pro headset.

The two biggest changes are found on the inside of the Watch: the Series 9 has an S9 processor, the biggest upgrade in power to the wearable since 2020.

It also has an second-gen ultra-wideband chip, a higher-fidelity version of the location-tracking Apple U1 announced in 2021 alongside the Apple AirTag .

These have their uses just inside the Watch 9, but we think they are also going to shine when used in collaboration with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro “spatial computer.”

Apple Vision Pro in the real world

Apple itself showed one of these possible headset interactions (not that it referred to it as such, of course) at the Watch Series 9 launch, a new control gesture. You briefly close together your thumb and index finger twice quickly. It's called Double Tap and, according to Apple, is made possible by the S9 chip.

Used with the Apple Watch alone, this gesture can play or pause music, accept calls, or snooze an alarm, among other options. It’s a neat way to interact with your smartwatch without actually touching the screen. And it uses a combination of signals from the accelerometer, gyroscope and heart rate sensor to avoid accidental activations.

However, we have met this gesture before, as part of Apple’s Vision Pro reveal in June. This headset may not be due for release until next year, but Apple showed demos of the thing in action during WWDC , and even let us go hands-on.

Apple Vision Pro

Apple’s pitch here is the spatial computer. Vision Pro throws up multiple displays in front of your face, and the visual fidelity is high enough that you can do actual productivity work from its giant virtual screens. Most VR headsets are too low-resolution to display lots of smaller-scale text in a satisfying manner. Not so with Vision Pro.

Eye tracking lets you select items, yes, with your eyeballs. And a series of hand gestures is used to zoom in and out, to rifle through menus, and as the equivalent of pressing a mouse button. That’s where we saw the new Apple Watch gesture first used, as a way to select things on Vision Pro without having to get all Minority Report .

In Apple’s demos, none of these require any additional hardware. You become a baton-less conductor of the spatial computer.

But in reality, we can imagine this not always panning out perfectly. Apple’s Vision Pro demos, including those held with journalists, will have been carefully controlled to avoid any possible cracks showing.

The Vision Pro tracks these gestures using cameras, but what happens if the user’s hand is not sufficiently in these cameras’ field of view? This is where the Apple Watch Series 9 gestures could come to the rescue.

This concern doesn’t appear to have been raised to date, because the Vision Pro excels when your hands are in a super comfortable, resting position in or above your lap. It’s because the headset has a pair of downward-facing camera sensors pointed across your torso and legs.

But what happens if you use the Apple Vision Pro at a desk with one hand under its surface? And what if you perform one of these gestures with you arm casually at your side, with the fingers possibly hidden the rest of your hand? We doubt the headset’s cameras will be able to see your hands clearly enough.

In these situations, the Apple Watch Series 9 could become a fall-back control method, an insurance policy the wearer should barely have to think about. It doesn't need to be "seen" by the headset to interact with it wirelessly.

Freedom of movement

The Apple Watch Series 9’s accelerometer and gyroscope can track your arm's motion with fine-grain detail just like the Vision Pro's camera-led tracking at its very best. But now we can consider the additional effect of adding in the Apple ultra-wideband location-sensing U2 chipset.

Apple introduced the ultra-wideband chip back in 2021 as part of the AirTag reveal. It lets one Apple device determine the distance and the direction in which another sits. And this new version is three times as powerful. What if the ultra-wideband chip in the Apple Watch Series 9 is, again, used to determine exactly where your wrist is relative to the headset, when the cameras lose track of your hand?

We end up with the gold standard of VR motion modelling, six degrees of freedom, without relying solely on headset cameras. It’s full modelling of an object’s position in 3D space, including tilt.

Once again, the Apple Watch Series 9 could be used here as a redundancy layer should the Apple Vision Pro's sensors be pushed beyond their limit by the context at hand. Literally.

The Apple Watch 9

When redundancy is essential

That is perhaps the crucial word here: redundancy. An Apple Watch Series 9 may be used as a sort of enriching insurance layer when connected to Vision Pro, to ensure the illusion of flawless immersion is (almost) never shattered. That is not something you can say about the Meta Quest 2 , brilliant as it is.

The uses for this Apple Watch Series 9 tech only expand when you dream up some of the more ambitious use cases for the Apple Vision Pro.

Let’s pick one of the air. You have two people in a room, a pair of architects working on the design of a 3D AR version of a building set to be built in, say, Paris. Each person wears an Apple Watch and Vision Pro headset. And in our dream scenario they are sharing the same software in a sort of multiplayer collaborative AR/VR design-a-thon. That soon-to-be Paris theater looms above their heads in 3D as they decide whether or not its arches look quite right.

Thanks to the Apple U2 chips in these devices, each wearer’s Vision Pro headset can not only track the position of the other headset, but the relative position of each Apple Watch too. Each device becomes a node that adds to the stability of the 3D positioning of each other node, like an AR mesh network.

The use of this tech goes far beyond the Apple Watch too. Anything with an Apple ultra-wideband chip embedded can become a powerful AR object anchor, that can be tracked not just out of the wearer’s vision, but through walls too. This is one key reason we think the power and range of the second-gen chip has been extended, to make it more accurate when locating through walls. It's not just about finding your phone from 75 feet away (but that is helpful).

Does this make the Apple Watch Series 9 an essential add-on for Vision Pro? Absolutely not. We're operating on conjecture here and at most it's probably an alternative to a non-fleshy bespoke controller Apple has not talked about yet. But thinking about this stuff doesn't half make you hope developers run with the Vision Pro concept, rather than dismissing it as something too pricey to attract a large enough audience.

Apple Watch Series 9 with gesture control

By CNN's Samantha Kelly

From Apple

The company showed off its next-generation Apple Watch, the Series 9, featuring a custom S9 chip for faster processing and the promise of using a hand gesture to control the watch.

A new gesture control called Double Tap will allow users to tap their index finger and thumb together twice, to answer or end phone calls, play and pause music, or snooze alarms. The hand gesture can also scroll through widgets, much like turning the digital crown.

From Apple

The company said this is enabled by an enhanced neural engine that processes data from sensors and machine learning. It is available starting next month.

"It will become one of those magical experiences you rely on everyday," the company said.

A similar hand tap will be used to control the Vision Pro mixed reality headset when it launches next year.

Other Apple Watch Series 9 updates include the ability for Siri to take requests, such as asking it to start a workout, and a new edge-to-edge display that double the brightness than the Series 8 watch. It also comes in a new pink color.

Apple event begins with video of people who say the technology saved their lives

From CNN's Catherine Thorbecke

Apple’s keynote September event started with a short video featuring the voices and stories of people who say the technology saved their lives.

"We're so excited you could join us today for some big announcements about two essential products: Apple Watch and iPhone," CEO Tim Cook said during his opening remarks. "Like we just saw, nothing's more important than helping save lives, and it's amazing to see all the ways people use Apple Watch and iPhone everyday."

Tim Cook greets attendees ahead of presentation

From CNN's Samantha Kelly

From Apple

Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off the iPhone event by greeting attendees and promising a big day ahead: "It's going to be a huge day," he said. "One I've been very personally looking forward to."

The focus of day, Cook said, will be around two products: the iPhone and Apple Watch.

From the event: Apple staffers are getting ready for the event to begin

Good morning from the Steve Jobs theater in Cupertino, California, where members of the press are now entering the space for Apple's annual keynote event.

Executives like Greg “Joz” Joswiak, who oversees marketing for the iPhone, are milling about the outdoor space, greeting attendees.

Apple staffers cheer and clap as everyone pours into the main hall. A video plays on screen of an animation of the Apple logo seen in the event’s invitation, with colors blue, silver, gray and white — a potential nod to the iPhone 15 lineup’s colors.

These events have become formulaic over the years, with updates usually expected on better battery, faster processor and enhanced camera capabilities, but everyone is buzzing this morning about the potential switch to USB-C chargers .

Highlights: iPhone through the years

From CNN's Jennifer Korn and Marie Barbier

The iPhone redefined the term “cell phone.” Apple’s trademark product revolutionized the mobile phone industry, shifting from flip phones and keyboards to large screens and powerful cameras.

Here is a look back at some of the big changes the iPhone has seen over years:

2007: The original iPhone, a phone with internet: The much-anticipated device combined an iPod, phone and what then- company chairman Steve Jobs  calls an “internet communicator.” Jobs unveiled the new $399 product, a 16 GB phone with a relatively terrible 2.0 megapixel camera and relatively large 3.5” screen.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduces the new iPhone at Macworld in San Francisco on January 9, 2007.

2008: iPhone 3G, meet the App Store: With the  second versio n of the iPhone, Apple introduces the App Store and 3G connectivity. The new device, half the cost of the original iPhone, sold more than 3 million within a month, far outpacing its predecessor and expectations.

Customers queue outside the Apple Store in London for the launch of the iPhone 3G on July 11, 2008.

2010: iPhone 4, selfie time: A thinner and sleeker phone hits the shelves with a better battery, camera and screen. The iPhone 4 starts to resemble the phone many of us use today. And with the addition of a front-facing camera, selfies and FaceTime calls enter into the chat.

An Apple employee demonstrates "Face Time" on the new iPhone 4 at the 2010 Apple World Wide Developers conference on June 7, 2010 in San Francisco, California.

2011: iPhone 4S, Hello, Siri!: Apple introduces the world to Siri, its now-iconic voice assistant, and the iMessage feature that allows iPhone users to message each other freely. Users are also given iCloud, making it possible to automatically sync all Apple devices.

An Apple customer demonstrates the voice assistant program on his newly purchased iPhone 4s outside of an Apple Store in New York City on October 14, 2011.

2012: iPhone 5, the Lightning cable arrives: With the iPhone 5 comes the Lightning cable, a shift away from the larger charging port used in Apple’s original iPhones and iPods. The 5 also gets a larger screen and LTE connectivity, making the phone much faster than its predecessors.

A newly released Apple iPhone 5 sits on a coffee shop countertop next to Apple's lightning connection cable in September 2012.

2013: iPhone 5S, fingerprint for entry: The 5S added the Touch ID feature, Apple’s first foray into biometric data usage as a replacement for passwords. Apple iPhone fans are also offered gold versions for the first time.

The new iPhone 5S is displayed during an Apple product announcement at the Apple campus on September 10, 2013 in Cupertino, California.

2016: iPhone 7/7Plus, Goodbye, headphone jack! Hello, two cameras!: In traditional Apple fashion, the company does away with the traditional headphone jack, forcing customers to buy dongles that adapt older headsets or Lightning-plug earbuds. The 7 is also the first water-resistant iPhone. It features a more static home button that cannot be pressed down, only touched, and the first dual camera lens with portrait mode.

The lightning connecting port is seen on an Apple Inc., iPhone 7 Plus during an event in San Francisco, California, on September 7, 2016.

2017: iPhone X, a new era: Goodbye home button, hello notched screen. The X revolutionizes the Apple product once again for its 10th anniversary, turning the iPhone into something that looks very similar to today’s versions. An extra lens also added portrait mode to the front facing camera, a fan favorite for iPhones to come.

The new iPhone X is displayed during an Apple special event at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park campus on September 12, 2017 in Cupertino, California.

2020: iPhone 12 series, the death of the in-box charger: Apple continued to upgrade its camera and display, plus introduce its proprietary MagSafe charging options. The 12 has two camera lenses, while the Pro and Pro Max have three plus night mode and enhanced zoom range. The 12 and the 12 Pro are the same size, while the Pro Max is significantly larger. The 12 series also marks the end of Apple including an in-box charger with each iPhone purchase.

A customer tries out an iPhone 12 Pro Max at the Apple flagship store during a product launch event in Sydney, Australia, on November 13, 2020.

2022: iPhone 14 series, goodbye, Mini- and SIM cards: Doing away with the iPhone Mini for the Pro, Apple brings back the larger Pro and adds a slew of safety features like emergency SOS via satellite. The Pro and Pro Max feature a “Dynamic Island” top notch that free floats from the top of the phone to better integrate into whatever is going on onscreen, as well as a better camera and display. A physical SIM card tray is also gone with the 14, pushing users towards eSIMs only.

What does the USB-C charger mean for iPhone users?

From CNN's Samantha Murphy Kelly

An iPhone 14 Pro is seen with a Lightning cable (left) and a USB-C cable (right) on September 10 in Berlin, Germany.

The iPhone 15 is heavily rumored to ditch Apple’s proprietary Lightning charger in favor of USB-C charging, marking a milestone for the company by adopting universal charging. The change could ultimately streamline the charging process across various devices —   and brands.

It’s currently unclear if the shift to USB-C will happen for all new iPhone 15 models or only for Pro devices. The move to USB-C won’t likely be a sole incentive for people to upgrade, but it could sway some consumers who have been resistant to the   iPhone over its charging limitations, according to Thomas Husson, a vice president at Forrester Research.

The iPhone 15 devices are expected to ship with a new cable in the box, but considering many mobile devices already use USB-C, including Apple’s own iPads and MacBooks, access to charging wires shouldn’t be too hard or costly.

“Given how widely USB-C has been used in other devices, it’s hard to imagine that customers will be totally caught out by this switch, and in the long term, it’s likely to benefit them, with a universal charging system having some very obvious upsides,” Wood said.

Apple could also bypass wired charging altogether to make way for wireless charging but not anytime soon because “wireless charging is currently so much slower than wired,” according to David McQueen, a director at ABI Research. “We’ll have to wait and see on that.”

History of Apple's Lightning charger

A Lightning charger is inserted into an Apple iPhone in September 2021.

Apple  introduced the Lightning charger  alongside the iPhone 5 in 2012, replacing its existing older 30-pin dock connector with one that enabled faster charging and had   a reversible design. It also ignited a related accessories business, requiring users to  buy a $30 Lightning adapter  to connect the device to older docks, alarm clocks and speaker systems.

“For Apple, it was all about being in control of its own ecosystem,” said David McQueen, a director at ABI Research. “Apple makes good money from selling Lightning cables and its many related accessories.”

It also takes a financial cut from the third-party accessories and cables that go through its Made For iPhone program. “Moving to USB Type C would take away this level of control as USB-C is a much more open ecosystem,” McQueen said.

In addition, Apple could create its own branded USB-C cable to perform “better with an iPhone,” such as allowing for greater wattage   to support faster charging while minimizing risk and damage to batteries, he added.

Apple could announce USB-C charging for phones — the biggest change to the iPhone in 11 years

A USB-C cable is seen in Krakow, Poland on September 11.

Apple's unveiling of iPhone 15 is widely expected to come with a significant change .

The switch would come less than a year  after the European Union voted  to approve legislation to require smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, portable speakers and other small devices to support USB-C charging by 2024. The first-of-its-kind law aims to pare down   the number of chargers and cables consumers must contend with when they purchase a new device and to allow users to mix and match devices and chargers even if they were produced by different manufacturers.

“This is arguably the biggest disruption to iPhone design for several years, but in reality, it is hardly a dramatic move,” said Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight.

Last year, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak,  publicly stressed  the value and ubiquity of the Lightning charger, which is designed for faster device charging, but noted “obviously we will have to comply” with the EU mandate.

“We have no choice, like we do around the world, to comply with local laws, but we think the approach would have been better environmentally and better for our customers to not have a government [have] that perspective,” Joswiak  said  at the time.

The EU’s decision is part of a greater effort to tackle e-waste overall, but could it generate more in the short term as people phase out their Lightning cables. (Apple will also likely need to develop a Lightning cable recycling program.)

Although Apple has voiced environmental concerns over what happens to old Lightning chargers, it has financial reasons for pushing back on the change, too.

Apple Watch Series 9 Review: All About The Newly Released Double Tap Gesture

Women's Health got to test the new Apple Watch Series 9 before anyone else.

apple watch

If you’re also the type who considers your wearable to be an extension of your arm at this point, the new features of the Apple Watch Series 9 (starting at $399, available September 22) will almost certainly pique your interest. They take your Apple Watch to the next level , making your daily functions easier, faster, and more accurate.

I’ve been testing out the new Series 9 watch since it was announced during a presentation at Apple Park last week, and I’m super stoked about what it can do.

Read on for my favorite bells and whistles—and my verdict on whether you need this upgrade .

Apple Watch Series 9

Apple Watch Series 9

The new double tap gesture just might change your life.

apple watch

The Series 9 has a totally redesign on the inside, starting with the powerful S9 SiP watch chip. This allows for a brand-new double tap gesture to swoop in and change the way you use your Apple Watch. The feature is now available for the Series 9 in a software update. (I had the opportunity to preview it on a separate device.)

Double tap works similarly to AssistiveTouch, an accessibility feature that has long been an option on Apple Watch. By simply raising your wrist and tapping your thumb and pointer together twice, you can activate the function of the primary button on your Apple Watch without touching the screen. Use it to answer or end a phone call, read a text message and reply with dictation, play and pause music, take a photo, or snooze an alarm.

I had to try it firsthand—you know, for research —and it is as simple as it sounds.

Double tap will be essential for busy folks who are always carrying 100 things at a time, since now, you’ll only need one free hand to operate the main functions of your watch. Even in my limited time testing the double tap, it was super easy to get the hang of, and I already want to incorporate it into my daily life.

It’s easier and faster to log and access your health data.

apple watch

When the Apple Watch Series 8 came out last year, it introduced a slew of new health features , including a Cycle Tracking app to monitor and predict your period and ovulation. On the Series 9, you can now use Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri , to access and log your health information privately and securely.

For example, you could ask Siri how your progress is looking on your Activity rings, how many hours of sleep you got last night, or what your average heart rate is when you’re taking a walk. You can also record data through Siri, like your weight, blood pressure, or when you last took a medication.

Apple Apple Watch Series 8

Apple Watch Series 8

The best part? On the Series 9, Siri now processes information through the watch itself, which makes all of this easier and faster than using Siri on any other Apple Watch. ICYMI, with previous models, every time you’d say “Hey Siri…," your request would be sent to the cloud and back to your watch to get an answer.

With the Series 9, you don't need Wi-Fi or cellular reception, so Siri's response time is way faster. Pair that with a new Neural Engine, which makes dictation 25 percent more accurate now, and you’re in business.

The display is brighter—and dimmer—than ever.

apple watch

The maximum brightness on the Series 9 screen (available in 41mm and 45mm sizes) goes all the way up to 2000 nits, double that of the Series 8. For all the nitwits who don’t speak tech (sorry, had to), that means your watch face can get really, really bright. If you're asking yourself why this makes a difference, consider this: Have you ever been out for a run on a sunny day and found it impossible to read your split or see a call coming in? Exactly.

The screen can also dim all the way down to one measly nit. This is handy if you need to check your watch in a dark place, like a movie theater, SoulCycle class, or red-eye flight—you can use your watch without disturbing those around you.

If you tend to misplace your iPhone, Precision Finding will be your best friend.

You’ve always been able to ping your iPhone with your Apple Watch, but the Series 9 takes that to a whole new level. Precision Finding functions similarly to an AirTag: It sends a noise to your iPhone 15, tells you how far away you are (or how close you’re getting), and vibrates your watch when you’re getting close.

This feature was designed to work in most standard-size homes, and works even if you’re in a different room from your lost iPhone. No shame—it happens to the best of us.

The upgraded watch is one of Apple’s first carbon-neutral products.

apple watch

As part of Apple 2030, the company’s commitment to making every product carbon neutral by the end of the decade, all three of this year’s new wearables—Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 —bear a carbon-neutral seal.

All aluminum Series 9 watches are made with recycled materials, and the more-compact packaging is now 100 percent fiber-based.

SuperNaNa 15 Pack Soft Silicone Bands

15 Pack Soft Silicone Bands

Many of your favorite Apple Watch bands are also sustainably made now, including the Sport Loop, which was redesigned with 82 percent recycled yarn to be carbon neutral (and it is just as soft and comfortable as before). I’m also really into the new Nike Sport Band, which gets its unique speckled pattern from flakes of recycled bands, and the Nike Sport Loop, made with yarn from previous seasons. (All are available September 22.)

nike bands

All Apple Watch users with a Series 4 or beyond will also get these features with the watchOS 10 update, available now:

Incorporating mindful moments into your day just got easier..

New updates to the Mindfulness app may be my favorite thing in this watchOS upgrade. With the State of Mind feature, you can discreetly log your daily mood and feelings . The app will present you with a series of dynamic shapes to help express how you’re feeling and what may be contributing to it. You can even set up a daily reminder so you have no excuse not to do this super-quick self-check.

watch

This new OS also uses your Apple Watch’s ambient light sensor to measure the amount of time you spend in daylight, which has been proven to be beneficial for your mental health (as well as reduce your risk of myopia, or nearsightedness!).

Cyclists, you’re about to get allll the data.

When you start a cycling workout from your Apple Watch, it will now automatically show up on your iPhone. With your phone mounted to your bike, it’ll be so much easier to view your heart rate, elevation, and speed while you ride.

Your Apple Watch can now also connect to Bluetooth cycling accessories , like power meters, speed sensors, or cadence sensors, whether you’re riding outdoors or on a stationary bike.

New Compass features make exploring even safer.

apple watch

In watchOS 9, the Compass app introduced Backtracking and Waypoints to ensure you never get lost, whether you’re on an intense hike or checking out a new neighborhood. Now, the Compass will auto-generate new cellular connectivity waypoints, so you’ll be able to find the fastest route to check a text or make an emergency SOS call. Peace of mind is everything, IMO.

Hikers will love the new Elevation view, which lets you view waypoints in 3D, and Apple Maps’ topographic map featuring contour lines, elevation, and points of interest. You can even search for nearby trails and find one that’s suited to your difficulty.

The final verdict: Do you need a new Apple Watch?

Last year’s Series 8 was such a game changer when it comes to health and fitness updates; you can read WH editor-in-chief Liz Plosser’s review for the proof. The Series 9 is really just an upgrade in terms of how fast (and in how many different ways) you can use, log, and access that crucial data.

I also am a total believer in the double tap gesture, which you can only experience on this new slate of Apple Watches. (While you technically can enable Hand Gestures on your current watch via AssistiveTouch, each is assigned a custom function.) The use cases for double tap—and the Series 9—are endless, and I can’t wait to see how it becomes part of our world.

New Wonderlust event leak reveals the Apple Watch Series 9’s best upgrades

Michael Simon

In just a few days, Apple will kick off its Wonderlust event, and while we know a lot about the iPhone 15 , we’ve been somewhat in the dark about the upgrades coming to the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. A new report from Bloomberg sheds some light on what to expect from Apple’s next lineup of wearables.

According to Mark Gurman, the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 will focus on “speed, efficiency, and accuracy” as Apple looks to bring a series of under-the-hood upgrades. He reports that Apple is planning to add a fourth-gen optical heart rate sensor, an upgrade from the third-gen sensor that was introduced with the Apple Watch Series 6. It’s unclear what specific improvements the third-gen sensor brought over the second-gen sensor, but the fourth-gen will be faster and more accurate, according to Gurman.

Apple will also reportedly include a new U2 chip in the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2, an upgrade over the U1 chip. Gurman says the new chip will improve location abilities for more precise tracking in the Find My app.

Finally, the new watches will showcase the all-new S9 processor, which will bring “major gains in processing speed” and possibly battery life improvements. And the Apple Watch Ultra 2 may have a second “dark titanium” color option. Apple will also reportedly use 3D printing for some models, though it’s unlikely Apple will talk about that during the presentation.

Apple will unveil the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 at the Wonderlust event on Tuesday at 10am PT . Follow along with Macworld for all of the announcements as they happen.

Apple Watch Series 9 unveiled with faster chips and new pink color

Apple kicked off its September event this Tuesday with the reveal of the Apple Watch Series 9 . The new model might look similar to its 2022 predecessor, but there are a number of significant improvements under the hood that make this a substantial update.

Apple says the S9 also enables 18 hours of battery life, even with a brighter display. The Series 9 has a maximum brightness of up to 2000 nits, which is double that of the Series 8 and should make it easier to read the screen in sunlight.

New feature and specs of the Apple Watch Series 9.

Another notable upgrade is the Series 9’s second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. This new chip enables Precision Finding for the iPhone 15 phones, which come with the same chip. If you ever lose your iPhone, your Apple Watch Series 9 can tell you the distance and direction to your lost phone with visual, haptic, and audio guidance.

Apple is bringing a new gesture to the Series 9 as well. If you tap your index finger and thumb together twice while wearing the watch, you can control the primary button of the app that you’re using. For example, if someone’s calling you, you can use the double tap gesture to answer and end the call. Double tap opens the Smart Stack from the watch face and then scrolls through the stack once it’s open. A useful accessibility feature that could have broad appeal.

During the presentation, Apple also introduced a new fabric for watch bands called FineWoven. This durable microtwill fabric is made of 68% post-consumer recycled content. Apple says it has “a suedelike feel” and is available with Magnetic Link and Modern Buckle bands. Additionally, Apple will no longer use leather in any new products.

Apple Watch Series 9 will be available on September 22 in 41mm and 45mm sizes, starting at $399. Aluminum models come in starlight, midnight, silver, (PRODUCT)RED, and pink cases. If you opt for stainless steel, you can pick between gold, silver, and graphite.

Save 40% Off the Stainless Steel Apple Watch Series 9 with LTE on Amazon

Sleek and functional.

Save 40% Off the Stainless Steel Apple Watch Series 9 with LTE on Amazon - IGN Image

For a limited time, Amazon is offering the Apple Watch Series 9 , upgraded with a 41mm stainless steel case and both GPS and LTE cellular connectivity, for only $442.10. That's almost 40% off the original $700 MSRP. This is one of the nicest Apple Watches you can get and the stainless steel casing really sets itself apart from the vanilla aluminum casing you'll find in the base Apple Watch. If you don't need the ruggedness of the Apple Watch Ultra, the stainless steel Series 9 is a more elegant looking watch. There's plenty of competition for smartwatches out there, but we think the Apple Watch Series 9 is still the best smartwatch of 2024 .

Apple Watch Series 9 (41mm Stainless Steel, LTE) for $442

Apple Watch Series 9 (41mm, Stainless Steel, GPS + LTE Cellular Connectivity)

The Apple Series 9 is currently the newest model available (and the Series 10 won't be out for at several months). The biggest improvements of the Series 9 over its predecessors are the (1) 30% faster S9 processor, which is based on the A15 Bionic chip and (2) a brighter display that offers up to 2000 nits of brightness. Other improvements includes a longer 18 hour battery life, hand gesture recognition, faster Siri response times, and a Gen2 Ultra Wideband chip. It retains the best features from previous watches like the always-on Retina OLED display, rugged IP6X dust resistant and swimproof (to 50mm) casing, and a wealth of health features like ECG, blood oxygen, and heart rate meters.

The stainless steel casing is more durable and less prone to scratches than the aluminum casing, plus it looks better. The stainless steel models also come with a tougher Sapphire Crystal glass cover for the display. It costs considerably more than aluminum, however, so unless you're getting a great discount, expect to pay close to Apple Watch Ultra pricing. This watch also supports LTE connectivity; that means you can use your watch to take calls and receive messages even when your phone isn't close by, provided that you add an Apple Watch specific line to your cell plan.

Nicolae Miu found guilty of 6 charges in Apple River stabbing trial

By Anthony Bettin , Stephen Swanson

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 5:37 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

HUDSON, Wis. —  Jurors have found  Nicolae Miu  guilty of multiple criminal charges, including homicide, in the 2022 Apple River stabbings in Wisconsin.

The jury found Miu guilty of one count of first-degree reckless homicide, four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of battery. The verdict was read in court on Thursday.

Miu was originally charged with intentional crimes, but was convicted on lesser, but still serious, reckless charges. Miu's defense attorney Aaron Nelson said Miu faces "substantial, life-changing penalties."

MIU041204

"We felt like we had a good case, we felt like we had a good defense," Nelson said. "But in many ways self-defense is a community standard and it's very dependent on which 12 people within the community that you ask."

Prosecutor Karl Anderson said although Miu was convicted of downgraded charges, the jury still did its duty.

"They couldn't agree on intentional, they agreed unanimously that it was reckless, that he showed utter disregard for human life," Anderson said.

Donny Hernandez — father of 17-year-old Isaac Schuman, who died in the attack —  spoke to the press following the verdict .

"It's been 21 months we've been waiting for justice for Isaac Michael Schuman, and we got it today," Hernandez said.

The trial lasted eight days, with more than three dozen witnesses taking the stand. The jury began deliberations after closing arguments Wednesday and reached a verdict Thursday morning.

Miu, 54, stabbed five people on the river on July 30, 2022, killing Schuman and injuring four others. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 24 and were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

During the trial, the prosecution sought to prove Miu was the aggressor, while Miu's attorneys argued he acted in self-defense.

Jurors heard testimony from Schuman's mother , other stabbing victims, witnesses, law enforcement and Miu himself . They saw cellphone video of the confrontation, body camera footage of the law enforcement response and a recording of Miu's initial interview with authorities.

Miu's sentencing date has not been scheduled. Anderson said Miu could face up to 97 years in prison.

Apple Watch Series 10 could use new display technology with this key benefit

Avatar for Chance Miller

This year’s Apple Watch Series 10 could offer a notable improvement in battery life. A new supply chain report this week says that the Apple Watch Series 10 will use a new display technology that lowers power consumption and improves efficiency. In turn, this could improve battery life across the board.

The rumor comes from The Elec , which reports that the Apple Watch Series 10 will use an upgraded OLED display with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology.

Currently, the Apple Watch’s OLED screen uses LTPO TFT for only two switching transistors, while the remainder use the less efficient low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology. For the Apple Watch Series 10, The Elec reports that the use of LTPO will expand to more transistors:

The LTPO TFT, which Apple is planning to apply to the Apple Watch 10 series OLED, is a method of applying oxide to the driving TFT and some switching TFTs, among the 7 to 8 TFTs. The LTPO TFT, which has been applied to the Apple Watch, used oxide for only two switching TFTs, and LTPS for the rest of the switching TFT and the driving TFT. Using oxide instead of LTPS for a drive TFT means that oxide is responsible for the TFT that connects directly to the OLED pixel. In LTPO OLED, oxide has been used to reduce leakage current, but in the new LTPO OLED, the role of oxide increases. Panel vendors with strengths in oxide technology may be advantageous. If oxide is applied to some of the driving TFTs and switching TFTs in Apple Watch 10 series OLEDs as planned by Apple, LTPS will only be used for the remaining switching TFTs and circuits outside the pixel area. The LTPS role is reduced.

That’s a lot of long-winded names and abbreviations. What does it actually mean? The Apple Watch Series 10’s OLED display should be significantly more power efficient and drain less of your battery life. That’s the part of this story that matters to most of you.

9to5Mac’s Take

I’m pretty happy with my Apple Watch Ultra’s battery life, but Apple Watch battery life in general is always an area that could be improved.

The battery life is also the main reason I wear the Apple Watch Ultra. If other Apple Watch models offered longer battery life, I’d at least consider switching back to something a bit smaller and lighter.

Whether the Apple Watch Series 10 actually offers improved battery life remains to be seen. It’s possible that any efficiency improvements offered by the new display technology are simply offset by other performance changes.
