'Vaathi' movie review: A wonderful Dhanush anchors a promising tale bogged down by cliches and deja vu

Even if everything goes downhill in a Dhanush film, one can rest assured his films will always have a poignant father-son scene. Right from the times of  Thiruda Thirudi  and  Sullan  to  Polladhavan  and  VIP  to even  Thanga Magan  and Asuran, a Dhanush film is elevated by the scenes featuring a father and a son. In Venky Atluri’s  Vaathi  ( Sir  in Telugu), Balamurugan (Dhanush) asks his father (Aadukalam Naren), why he is making a big fuss out of not having the money to make his son an engineer. The father says,  “Pasanga kaekkara vishayam kedaikkalena avangalukku oru naal dhaan varutham, aana kaettadhu vaangi thara mudiyalena, pethavangalukku adhu eppavume varutham  (Children are sad for a day if they don’t get what they ask for, but the parents are sad for days together for not being able to fulfill their children’s wishes).”

What follows and precedes this poignant moment in  Vaathi  is a bunch of cliche-ridden scenes that have a tremendous sense of deja vu. In fact, sandwiching a sentimental moment between template scenes is a trademark of this film. However, there is a reason why cliches exist in the first place… they work, and in  Vaathi , they almost do. 

The film begins in 2022, and soon enough, through the wondrous world of VHS tapes, we are transported back to the late 90s and jump right into the crux of  Vaathi  — privatisation of education. On one end, there is dwindling attendance at government schools, and on the other end, there are burgeoning admissions in private schools. Of course, even if the system is a villain, you need a face for it, and that’s where Thirupathi (Samuthirakani) comes into the picture. He is the corporate villain archetype who treats education as a commodity.

Of course, his materialistic world is challenged by the idealistic and rather simplistic world of Balamurugan, or as he is fondly called Bala sir. In fact, it is fun to see Samuthirakani ham like there’s no tomorrow, especially when one realises that  he  is the Bala sir in  Saattai , and his Dhayalan has shifted to the dark side in  Vaathi . Nevertheless, Bala’s utopian worldview can be labelled as impractical, but it is nice to see a protagonist having a want and a lot of heart.  It is this heart that is seen in  Vaathi , even in the most mundane of scenes.

But where  Vaathi  really surprises us is in the sudden burst of ingenuity. Take, for instance, the first time we see Rajendran in the film. He is Bhoopathy, a videographer who moonlights as a theatre owner who runs soft porn films. When his place gains respect among his own people, there is a nice wrap to that arc. The way Venky decided to sketch this character speaks a lot about his intent. 

This heart and intent hold him in good stead as Venky blows hot and cold with the writing, which is burdened by a  Super 30  hangover, in addition to a cocktail mix of films, including  Saattai, 3 Idiots, Nammavar , and a bunch of other films. If coaching centres were the bane of quality education in  Super 30 , it is private schools in  Vaathi . There are a lot of similar beats in both films, especially the camaraderie between the students and the teacher. Honestly, these portions in  Vaathi  were quite enjoyable, and the lengthy sequence where the students defy the odds and rally for their teacher is a mass masala moment that finds its way to the top in a film that managed to stay rooted till then. It is a nice touch that when being exalted as a god, Bala is not really in his senses. This is the perfect amount of masala in a film that wants to be rooted.

However, sensationalism soon finds its way to the fore pushing realism behind, which leads to some uncharacteristic narratives, and unintended humour. Also, the ‘love at first sight’ and the ‘fighting for the girl’ tropes have no place in Vaathi, even if the film is set in the glorious 90s that always had a soft corner for such scenes. The forced humour does more good than harm and has a very bitter aftertaste too.

Also, can’t help but detect points from the makers for naming the film,  Vaathi , and not having the students use it as a term of endearment and respect. Having a superstar like Dhanush at the centre of things also pushes Venky and Co to give us more than the required number of stunt sequences. They work because of the actor’s charisma, but they poke large holes in the narrative.  

Undoubtedly,  Vaathi  is all about Dhanush and his students, and it is impressive to see an unwavering focus on this equation. The biggest strength of Dhanush's performance is his understanding of when to take the back seat, and in more than a few scenes, he doesn’t shy away from letting the children take the wheel. The kids rise up to the occasion too, and most of them get their moment under the limelight, and they use it to the fullest. 

Another smart idea in  Vaathi  is the setting of the film, which allows the inhabitants of the town of Sholavaram to speak a smattering of Telugu. However, the idea isn’t fully developed, and it is also the case with the film being set in the 90s era. Apart from a PCO booth, and a beautiful scene involving hall tickets and a newspaper,  Vaathi  doesn’t really explore the time period, and we are left with the feeling of watching a rather trendy story unfold in a period setting.

Also, Samyuktha is wasted in a role that starts off quite well but doesn’t offer her anything, There is a nice aside where they refer to each other as 'sir' and 'madam' even when they are romantically inclined towards each other, but this arc is largely disappointing, especially since the writer even finds a way to conveniently pack her away during the second act where things don’t always go in favour of  Vaathi . The same holds good for the supporting cast, who are spectacularly one-note and offer nothing new. 

Bolstered by a mostly loud and moderately effective background score by GV Prakash, whose songs are used smartly by Venky,  Vaathi  is a triumphant tale of an underdog who fights against a system that is heavily stacked against him. With the power of retrospection, Venky and the team talk in detail about the education system in the country.

As the credits roll, and we move past the induced mass moments and the warm relationship Bala shared with his Super 46,  Vaathi  becomes the latest film to strike warring bells against the increasingly expensive field of education. Impressively,  Vaathi  presents the problems without offering any solutions. Despite using a 140-minute runtime to teach us a bunch of subjects, including the importance of education, respect in society, caste discrimination, women empowerment, and financial independence, the biggest two lessons that  Vaathi  teaches us are...

1) Films don't have to be preachy to drive home a point

2) Dhanush can make anything look easy

The Dhanush-Starrer Vaathi, Streaming on Netflix, is an Elementary Message Movie About The Most Primary Issues in The Education System

The idea of the teacher as a saviour has been a part of our movies for so long that it has become easy to predict the ebbs and flows of the subgenre. Be it a film like Saattai (2012) , the more recent Master (2021) , or Nammavar (1994) which inspired the Lokesh film, it’s as though it is only a matter of time before we get another montage of a campus cleanup featuring annoyingly gleeful students. Like how a screenwriter needs to work extra hard to avoid the trap of predictability in a sports drama, the “back to school” film too deserves a similar amount of innovation to create freshness. 

In this regard, you find Venky Atluri’s script to be partly rewarding and a whole lot frustrating. To begin with, the film is closer in spirit to Saattai (the decision to cast Samuthirakani as the villain here is a nice touch) or a Malayalam film like Manikyakkallu (2011). This isn’t only because all three films begin with an idealist having to take charge of a dying government school. These films also use individual characters, who are usually students, to address wider issues such as consumerism, caste and bad parenting, besides underscoring the obvious within the education system. 

While Vaathi makes an effort to address all of these with varying degrees of success, it is the way it goes deeper into the business of education that gives it a bit of an edge. The main antagonist here (played by Samuthirakani) is a man who is not just the pioneer of private education in Tamil Nadu but he is also Balamurugan’s ( Dhanush ) employer. Even the conflict that sets the ball rolling is the fear of a new law that would create a ceiling on how much private schools can charge as fees.  

Instead of fighting the new law, the antagonist chooses to fight the perception that good education should be free and accessible. The decision to assign Balamurugan to a government school too does not arise from the hope that he would improve it. It’s quite the opposite with his qualification being a junior teacher with no teaching experience. So when he leaves his hometown to take up his new duty as the mathematics teacher in a remote school located on the TN-Andra Pradesh border, we’re expecting the setting to add new flavours to tired tropes. We are also hoping for this change in the scenario to throw up issues that haven’t yet been covered in similar films. 

Primarily, this new location only contributes to making the film’s bi-lingual credential a little more believable. Unlike the recently released Michael , in Vaathi we’re willing to overlook lips sync issues and the strange landscape because the place itself is both in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. It doesn’t really explore either culture but at least it gives its conflict a universality because education is the same everywhere. 

But it is the manner in which we arrive at foreseeable plot points that makes it hard to keep engaging with Vaathi . The school’s biology teacher (Samyuktha) falls for Balamurugan exactly at the moment in which he sorts out the school’s caste issue. The montages, including the part where weak students suddenly become experts, borrow images from films we’ve seen before. The lack of stronger characters that help Bala in his mission makes the film feel utterly generic, even when major events are taking place. 

Of these, a particularly tiring stretch involves Bala walking back after he’s been attacked by local goons. It is a highly melodramatic sequence that is meant to show the pain Bala goes through in his efforts to keep teaching. But when the scene doubles up to show the impact he’s having on his students, we get a lofty stretch in which his weakest student comes to his aid to ensure his path becomes a little easier. It’s a scene written with sympathy as the only motive, yet it only repeats the same point we’ve already come to understand by then. 

It is when the film goes a little easier on itself that we get portions where it is most inventive. Instead of heavy drama, there’s a lightness when it almost transforms into a meta-film about the power of cinema to bring change. In this, not only does it speak about the cinema hall becoming a temple of learning, but it also creates the space for Bala to keep appearing in different costumes (including that of Subramania Bharathi) without the effect feeling too contrived. 

This stretch where education itself needs to be smuggled in, like contraband, hits you harder about the point the film is trying to make. But these remain short passages of brilliance in a film that’s almost exactly what you had predicted from the trailer. A major reveal featuring an IAS officer was hardly the surprise it was meant to be and even the climax, with Bala requesting his students to use an unfair advantage, goes against everything the film was speaking about. Without a lot to say that’s new and without a new way of saying it, Vaathi is just another well-intentioned message movie that’s meant to make its hero look good.

Vaathi movie review: Dhanush-starrer about right to education is effective and brave, but needed better characters

Vaathi movie review: the film allows dhanush to play to the gallery, but the story never glorifies his character. it also stars samuthirakani, samyuktha and sai kumar..

Venky Atluri’s Vaathi, which is set in the late 1990s, is a straightforward film about one man’s fight against the privatisation of the education system. It doesn’t do anything pathbreaking in terms of storytelling, but it definitely manages to strike a chord or two in the fashion it chooses to narrate this story of one man’s dream to make good education accessible to all. Unlike most films that have dealt with the education system in the past, Vaathi never goes overboard in its messaging and at the same time is quite engaging. Dhanush plays Bala Murugan, who works as an assistant teacher in a popular educational institute run by Thirupathi (Samuthirakani), who treats education as business. After the state government introduces a new bill, which forces private schools to take over government-funded schools, Thirupathi assigns three third-grade assistant teachers from his institute and sends them to teach in a government school in a remote village.

Bala happens to be one of the teachers and he takes it up as a challenge to bring about a change through his teaching methods and produce results. However, he’s faced with the challenge of dealing with students from the lowest economic background as most of them support their parents in running the family. After a lot of struggles, when Bala finally manages to convince the parents as well as the students to return to school, he’s faced with a different set of challenges. Does Bala succeed in his endeavor in reforming the students and producing the desired results?

Vaathi works to a large extent because of its relatability factor. From the story to characters and to its presentation, there’s so much to relate and agree with. If you’re someone from a middle-class family and have parents, who struggled to arrange funds to pay school as well as tuition fees, Vaathi will resonate strongly and leave a lasting impact. The film does commercialise quite a lot of things in a way to appeal to the masses, but the point it tries to drive home, which is about making good education accessible to everyone, connects on an emotional level. In the second half, the film does suffer from a Super 30 hangover, but the similarity doesn’t make Vaathi less effective. The film’s finale is smart writing as the story takes a very familiar trope and turns it on its head to send audiences home on a high.

Dhanush continues to shine in roles that highlight the sufferings of the middle class and people below them. It’s a brave film to pick and foray into an entirely new market as Dhanush makes his Telugu debut with the project which is titled SIR. He’s earnest as a dutiful teacher who desperately wants to bring about a change. The film does allow Dhanush to play to the gallery in a few instances but the story never glorifies his character. Samyuktha plays her part well and manages to score in the limited screen time she gets. The movie definitely needed a better written antagonist character as someone even as versatile as Samuthirakani couldn’t make the role interesting.

VAATHI MOVIE REVIEW

Vaathi is an action drama written and directed by Venky Atluri. The film stars Dhanush, Samuthirakani, and Samuyktha Menon in the lead roles. The film is produced by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, while it is distributed by Seven Screen Studios in Tamil Nadu.

Vaathi revolves around the life of Bala Murugan, a school teacher, who finds himself in the middle of business politics in the education sector. In the beginning, Bala Murgan is sent to a government school to teach the children of Sozhavaram. When these students perform well in the exams than the students from the private institutions, Bala is sent away from the village. The rest of Vaathi depicts the efforts made by Bala to support these children in their education.

Dhanush plays the role of a school teacher with ease and balances the film with his quirky behavior. An actor of such stature being open for different roles is appreciable. Even in this film, he disguises himself as Raavanan, and Bharathiar with no inhibitions. Samyuktha Menon shines along with Dhanush despite her limited screen presence. Samuthirakani is kept busy with his usual template but with different dialogues. Other characters justify their roles.

The frames of Yuvaraj lift the mass moments of the film and capture the drama without hindering it. Songs of GV Prakash hits the right chords providing the delight of the situations, but there are issues with their placement. For the most part of the film, the background score elevates the mood while it distracts us at other times. The period setup is brought to life by the art director.

The message enveloped in the film is a big positive for the film due to its relatability. Most of the scenes are simple and conventional which widens its reach among the audience. The romantic angle is short and it is woven into the storyline. This does not loosen the grip of the screenplay. Dhanush once again playing an underdog kind of role does wonders for the script as the sequence of him leaving the village touches the audience through its genuine moments.

The film falls out of reach when the script becomes over-ambitious in its content. Dialogues fall out of place which reduces the grit of the story. The engaging factor in the first half is considerably less than in the packed second half. Single-dimensionally sketched characters don't help the cause of the film. Though the film justifies its Telugu flavor with the geography, yet it is far stretched into convincing the audience.

Overall the film tries to sell its message with conventionally accepted tropes which succeeds in most parts. The run time and the simplicity of the script help the engagement.

வெங்கி அட்லூரி இயக்கத்தில் உருவாகியிருக்கும் படம் வாத்தி. தனுஷ், சமுத்திரகனி, சம்யுக்தா, கென் கருணாஸ் உள்ளிட்டோர் நடித்திருக்கின்றனர். ஜிவி பிரகாஷ் இசையமைத்திருக்கிறார். மிகுந்த எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் வாத்தி படம் இன்று திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியானது. படம் எப்படி இருக்கிறது என்பது குறித்து விரிவான விமர்சனம்

வாத்தியின் கரு என்ன?

ஆடியோ வெளியீட்டு விழாவிலேயே தனுஷ் படத்தின் ஒன்லைனை கூறிவிட்டார். அவர் கூறியதுபோலவே தனியார்மயமாக்கலால் அரசு பள்ளிக்கூடங்களுக்கு சந்திக்கும் அல்லது சந்தித்த ஆபத்து. அதன் மூலம் கல்வி எப்படி வியாபாரம் ஆகியிருக்கிறது என்பதை சொல்ல முயன்றிருக்கிறார்கள் வெங்கியும், தனுஷும். ஆனால் துரதிருஷ்டவசமாக அவர்களின் முயற்சி முயன்றார்கள் என்றதோடு நின்றுகொண்டதுதான் வருத்தம்.

எப்படி இருக்கிறார் வாத்தி?

கல்வி வியாபாரம் ஆவதால் வரும் விளைவுகளை வைத்து தமிழில் ஏற்கனவே படங்கள் வந்திருக்கின்றன. ஆனால் இப்போது எல்லாமும் தனியார்மயமாகும் சூழல் உருவாகியிருக்கும் நிலையில் இப்படிப்பட்ட படத்தை கொடுக்க நினைத்ததை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளலாம். ஆனால் அதற்குள் வெங்கி அட்லூரி செய்திருப்பதைத்தான் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. வாத்தியார் பாலமுருகனாக தனுஷ். வழக்கம்போல் நடிப்பில் பின்னியிருக்கிறார். இருப்பினும் அசுரன், திருச்சிற்றம்பலம் என நடிப்பில் கேஷுவலாக கலக்கிய தனுஷ் இதில் கொஞ்சம் சிரமப்பட்டிருக்கிறாரோ என்றே தோன்றுகிறது. ஏனெனில் தனுஷ் என்பவர் ஒரு எஃபர்ட் லெஸ் நடிகர். ஆனால் இதில் அவர் எஃபர்ட் எடுத்திருப்பது அப்பட்டமாகவே தெரிகிறது.

அதேபோல் தனுஷின் இளமை ஒருபக்கம் ப்ளஸ்ஸாக இருந்தாலும் இந்தப் படத்தில் அது கொஞ்சம் துருத்தலாகவே இருந்தது. ஏனெனில் இவர் மாணவரா இல்லை வாத்தியாரா என்ற குழப்பம் ஏற்பட்டது. அந்த குழப்பத்தை தீர்ப்பதற்கு இயக்குநர் வாத்தி பாலமுருகனுக்கு காஸ்டியூமை கொஞ்சம் மாற்றியிருக்கலாம். பள்ளி மேல் பக்தி இருக்கலாம்தான் ஆனால் சதா காலமும் யூனிஃபார்மோடு சுற்றும் அளவு இருக்கும் பக்திதான் கொஞ்சம் பயமுறுத்தியது.

வெங்கி சார் இதெல்லாம் நியாயமா?

தெலுங்கிலிருந்து வந்து தமிழில் இயக்குநர்கள் படம் இயக்குவது ஆரோக்கியமான விஷயம்தான். ஆனால் தமிழில்தான் நாம் படம் எடுக்கிறோம் என்பதை மறந்துவிட்டு லொகேஷன் முதல் ஜூனியர் ஆர்ட்டிஸ்ட்வரை தெலுங்கு வாடை அடிக்க வைப்பதெல்லாம் அபத்தத்தின் உச்சம். இந்தப் படம் 90களில் நடப்பதாக உருவாக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் அந்த காலகட்டத்தை கண்முன் நிறுத்துவதில் இயக்குநர் தோல்வியடைந்துள்ளார். மேலும், சூட்டிங் பிடித்திருக்கும் லொகேஷன் தமிழ்நாடு - ஆந்திரா பார்டர். பைலிங்குவல் படம் என்பதை லொகேஷனிலும் அப்ளை செய்துவிட்டார்போல இயக்குநர். இதனால்தான், கதையோடும், கதை நிகழும் இடத்தோடும் தமிழ் ரசிகர்கள் ஒன்ற முடியாமல் தியேட்டரில் நெளியப்போவது நிச்சயம். அதிலும் வாத்தியிடம், திருப்பதி வசனம் பேசும் ஒரு இடத்தில் 'இதான் இன்னைக்கு ட்ரெண்ட்' என்கிறார். ட்ரெண்ட் என்கிற வார்த்தையே கடைசி 10 வருடங்களாகத்தான் ட்ரெண்டிங்கில் இருக்கிறது. ஆனால் வாத்தி இயக்குநருக்கு மட்டும் 1999ஆம் ஆண்டே தெரிந்திருக்கிறது போல. அதேபோல் ஒரு காட்சியில், தமிழ் வாத்தியாரை அறிமுகப்படுத்தும்போது எதற்காக அவ்வளவு டம்மியாக காட்ட வேண்டும் என்பது புரியவில்லை.

வாத்தி ஈர்க்கும் விஷயங்கள் என்ன?

அதற்காக படத்தில் பாசிட்டிவ் இல்லையா என கேட்டால் இருக்கிறது. சாதி குறித்த ஒரு காட்சியில்.. இயக்குநர் வெங்கி அட்லூரி கவனம் ஈர்த்திருக்கிறார். மாணவர்கள் மத்தியில் சாதி ஏற்றத்தாழ்வை போக்கும் விதமாக தனித்தனியாக பாடம் எடுப்பதும்; அதன் பிறகு வாத்தி வைக்கும் ட்விஸ்ட்டும் ஈர்க்கும்படி இருக்கின்றன. மேலும் சாதி ஒழிப்பு குறித்து பிரசார நோக்கத்தில் வசனம் எதுவும் எழுதாமல்; மைல்டாகவும் அதேசமயம் போல்டாகவும் வாத்தியை அவ்வாறு செய்ய வைத்ததற்கு கை தட்டலாம்.

அதேபோல், தேர்வு முடிவுகள் வந்த பிறகு மாணவர்களிடம் தனுஷ் எடுக்கச்சொல்லும் ஒரு முடிவு ஈர்க்கும்படி இருக்கின்றன. உணர்ச்சி பெருக்குக்குள் அடங்கி மற்றவர்களின் எதிர்காலத்தை சுருக்காமல் தனக்கு கெடுதல் விளைவிக்கும் ஒருவரின் ஈகோவை பயன்படுத்தி தானும் வளர்ந்து (நல்ல விஷயத்துக்காக) மற்றவர்களின் எதிர்காலத்தையும் முன்னேற்ற சொல்லும் முடிவில் வாத்தி பாலமுருகன் அப்ளாஸ் அள்ளுகிறார்.

அப்துல் கலாம எப்போ பாஸ் ரிலீஸ் பண்ணுவீங்க?

படத்தின் ஒரு இடத்தில் மோட்டிவேஷனல் ஸ்டோரி சொல்கிறார் தனுஷ். சரி இழுவையாய் போகும் கதைக்குள் ஒரு கதை வருகிறதே இதாவது சுவாரசியமாக இருக்கும் என்று நிமிர்ந்து உட்கார்ந்தால் ராமேஸ்வரம் என்று ஆரம்பித்து அப்துல் கலாமில் முடித்ததும் டேக் ஆஃப் ஆன முதுகு உடனடியாக லேண்ட் ஆகிக்கொண்டது. அப்துல் கலாம் மோட்டிவேஷனல் ஆள்தான். அதற்காக அவரையே எத்தனை காலம்தான் அதற்கு பயன்படுத்துவீர்கள். வேறு யாருமே கிடைக்கவில்லையா? சீக்கிரம் அப்துல் கலாம ரிலீஸ் பண்ணுங்க பாஸ்

திரையரங்கில் தனுஷ் சொல்லிய பாடம்

ஒருகட்டத்துக்கு மேல் ஊரைவிட்டு துரத்தப்படும் வாத்தி திரையரங்கில் பாடம் எடுக்கிறார். அதற்கு ஊறுகாயாக அருணாச்சலத்தை தொட்டுக்கொள்கிறார் இயக்குநர். ஆனால் திரையரங்குக்குள் நடத்தப்படும் பாடம் எப்படி வெளியில் யாருக்குமே பல நாள்கள் தெரியாமல் இருக்கும் என்ற கேள்வி எழுகிறது. மாறுவேடம் அணிந்து வரும் தனுஷை பார்த்ததும் ஒருவித பரிதாப உணர்வே தோன்றியது. அய்யோ வாத்தியார் பாலமுருகனுக்கு இந்த நிலையா என்ற பரிதாபம் இல்லை அது அய்யோ நம்ம தனுஷுக்கா இந்த நிலைமை என்ற பரிதாப உணர்வு அது. தனுஷை பாடாய் படுத்தியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் வெங்கி அட்லூரி. சுருக்கமாக சொல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால் மெசேஜ் சொல்கிறேன் என்கிற பெயரில் எந்த இயக்குநர் வந்தாலும் இனி எச்சரிக்கையாக இருங்கள் என பாடம் எடுத்திருக்கிறார் வாத்தி தனுஷ்.

நாயகிக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் இருக்கிறதா?

தமிழ் சினிமா இயக்குநர்கள் இப்போதுதான் நாயகிகளை மையமாக வைத்து படங்கள் இயக்கும் ஆரோக்கியமான பாதைக்கு திரும்பியிருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் வம்சி, வெங்கி அட்லூரி போன்றவர்கள் மீண்டும் கதாநாயகிகளை பேச்சுக்கு வந்து போகும் கதாபாத்திரமாக மாற்ற முயன்று கொண்டிருக்கிறார்களோ என்ற அச்சம் நிச்சயமாக எழுகிறது. ஏனெனில் இந்தப் படத்தில் சம்யுக்தாவின் கேரக்டரை இன்னும் வெளிக்கொண்டு வந்திருக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால் இயக்குநரை அதற்கு எது தடுத்ததோ தெரியவில்லை. பேருக்கு வந்து போகிறார்.

வாத்தி கொடுக்கும் ஆறுதல் என்ன?

வாத்தி படத்தில் ஒரே ஆறுதல் சந்தேகமே இல்லாமல் ஜிவி பிரகாஷ்தான். பாடல்களாகட்டும், பின்னணி இசையாகட்டும் மனிதர் புகுந்து விளையாடியிருக்கிறார். வா வாத்தி பாடலும், பத்து தல ராவணன் பாடலும் செம ரகம். குறிப்பாக பின்னணி இசை. ஒவ்வொரு காட்சிக்கும் அருமையாக இசையமைத்திருக்கும் ஜிவி பிரகாஷ், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் வரும் ஒரு சண்டை காட்சிக்கு ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக வேறு ஜானரில் அமைத்திருக்கும் பின்னணி இசை சூப்பர் ரகம்.

வியாபாரத்திற்காக கல்வி வியாபாரத்தை விற்ற கதை

கல்வி வியாபாரம் ஆவதை சொல்ல நினைத்தது நிச்சயம் நல்ல விஷயம்தான். ஆனால் அதை இப்படி கமர்ஷியலை கலந்துகட்டி சொல்லியிருப்பது தேவையற்ற ஒன்று. கல்வி விழிப்புணர்வு குறித்து வந்த படங்களில் தனுஷும், வெங்கி அட்லூரியும் ஒருமுறை வாகை சூட வா படத்தை பார்த்திருக்க வேண்டும். இதுவரை பார்க்கவில்லை என்றால் இனியாவது பார்க்க வேண்டும். அந்தப் படமும் இந்த ஜானரை சேர்ந்ததுதான். இருப்பினும் அந்தப் படம் தேசிய விருது வென்றதற்கும், மக்கள் மனதை வென்றதற்கும் காரணம் என்னவென்றால்; அது நம் மண்ணோடு பிணைந்து மக்களின் வலிகளை யதார்த்தமாக சொன்னது.

வாத்தி அப்படி இல்லை. இந்த ஒன்லைனை கமர்ஷியல் இல்லாமல் ஒரு பக்கா சமூக கருத்துள்ள திரைப்படமாக காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கலாம். ஆனால் இன்டஸ்ட்ரியில் தனுஷ் என்ற ஸ்டாரை வைத்து நடக்கும் வியாபாரத்திற்காக இந்த ஒன்லைனையும் வியாபாரத்திற்காக டெவலப் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். சுருக்கமாக சொல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால் கல்வி வியாபாரம் ஆவதை தடுக்க வேண்டும், அதுகுறித்த விழிப்புணர்வை மக்களிடம் கொண்டு போக வேண்டும் என்ற நல்ல நோக்கத்தை வியாபாரத்திற்காக கெடுத்து வாத்தி என்ற பெயரில் விற்றிருக்கிறார்கள்...!

Venky Atluri's 'Vaathi', starring Dhanush, is a half-decent, not-bad masala movie that could have been much better

It's the 1990s. Thanks to liberalisation and privatisation, education has become a booming business. There's a statue of Saraswathi in the premises of the local government school, but note the name of the local theatre: Lakshmi. The school with zero attendance and the theatre with housefull shows – education and money, Saraswathi and Lakshmi – become intertwined in Venky Atluri's halfway-decent Vaathi (or Sir in Telugu), which stars Dhanush as Bala, an idealistic teacher who believes that education should be free for those who cannot afford it. The children who return to the government school after Bala is appointed as a teacher are the children of cobblers and tailors and so on. What if they can change their destinies? What if their stories could resemble that of APJ Abdul Kalam, the son of a boatman who became a scientist? (As of this time period, he is not yet President.)

This material could have resulted in an unbearably "noble" message-movie, but Venky Atluri pulls off a small miracle. (The film could have been a bigger miracle, but more about that later.) The director is also the writer, and he demonstrates a great instinct for masala -movie writing. One of the film's most goosefleshy touches is in the way it merges cinema and education. At one point, the hero is celebrated with bits of paper thrown at the screen because what he's doing is a true act of heroism – and not just because he is this film's "hero". Through his conviction and his acts, Bala has earned this fandom. There is another wonderfully earnest scene involving a hand pump. It is a moment right out of myth, where a student will do anything for his teacher. (Recall, for instance, the story about Karna bearing great pain without moving because his guru Parasurama was resting on his lap. This is in that same zone.)

Where there is a hero, there is a heroine, there is a villain. But both characters are (thankfully) understated. The love angle with Samyuktha Menon is kept mercifully short. And Samuthirakani plays the bad guy without too much fuss. The ending has him winning without actually winning. It is an inspired bit of writing that stresses how being practical is sometimes more important than being emotional. Even in the dialogues, there are little touches that stand out, like how Bala speaks in phrases of three. (An example: "Okay sir. Thank you sir. Take care sir".) GV Prakash delivers a rousing, old-fashioned score that matches the pitch of the storytelling perfectly. As for Dhanush, it is not exactly a challenging part, but he sells his character with ease. We believe in this do-gooder without getting annoyed by him, and that's no small feat.

Then why isn't this movie better? Why is it just a… "small miracle"? Because the director doesn't trust his material to the extent that he should. Vaathi/Sir takes a while to take off. The framing device is unnecessary because the point with the videos would have worked much better had it appeared out of the blue, instead of being hinted at earlier. The comedy is bad. And there is no "stay" in the masala touches, which always work best when they are built up to. Instead of spending more time in, say, showing an expelled Bala finding a way to reenter the village to be with his students (this would also make the Bharathiyar get-up at the end more convincing), we waste a lot of time in "mass" action stretches, full slo-mo and all. Bala's first fight sequence is a waste of some five minutes that could have gone towards building the film's masala world better. A lot of this world-building, now, seems to happen at 2x speed. But given everything, I was just happy that this was not a generic, preachy movie. It's not perfect, but it holds on to its metre, its pitch, its sensibility. And that's a… small miracle.

தெலுங்கு இயக்குனர்கள் தமிழ் சினிமாவிற்கு வருவதில் எந்த தவறுமில்லை. ஆனால், அவர்கள் தெலுங்கு ரசனையுடன் மட்டுமே தமிழ்ப் படங்களைத் தருவதுதான் அவர்களுக்குள் இருக்கும் தடுமாற்றம். படத்தில் சின்னச் சின்னக் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் கூட தெலுங்கு நடிகர்களே ஆக்கிரமித்திருப்பதால் ஒரு தெலுங்குப் படத்தைப் பார்த்த உணர்வு மட்டுமே வருகிறது. அவ்வளவு அற்புதமான கருத்தை, கதையை எடுத்துக் கொண்ட இயக்குனர் தமிழ் ரசிகர்களையும் படத்துடன் ஒன்றி ரசிக்கும் கலை எது என்பதை கற்க மறந்துவிட்டார். சமுத்திரக்கனி நடத்தும் பள்ளி ஒன்றில் உதவி ஆசிரியராக வேலை பார்ப்பவர் தனுஷ். அரசு பள்ளிகளின் தரத்தை மேம்படுத்த தனியார் கல்வி நிறுவனங்களின் சங்கம் முடிவெடுக்கிறது. அதன்படி தங்களிடமிருந்து திறமையற்ற சில ஆசிரியர்களை தனியார் பள்ளிகளுக்கு அனுப்புகிறது. அப்படி சென்னை, ஆந்திரா பார்டரில் உள்ள சோழவரம் கிராமத்திற்கு ஆசிரியராக வருகிறார் தனுஷ். அவருடைய தீவிர முயற்சியால் அங்குள்ள மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் சிறந்த மாணவ, மாணவிகளை உருவாக்குகிறார். அவர்களை டாக்டராக, இன்ஜினியராக ஆக்க முயற்சிக்கிறார். ஆனால், அப்படி நடந்து அரசு பள்ளிகளின் தரம் உயர்ந்தால் தங்களது கல்வி வியாபாரத்திற்கு பாதிப்பு வரும் என நினைக்கும் சமுத்திரக்கனி, அதற்கு பெரும் தடையாக இருக்கிறார். அதையும் மீறி தனது லட்சியத்தில் தனுஷ் வெற்றி பெற்றாரா, இல்லையா என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. தனுஷும் படத்தில் சீருடை அணிந்திருப்பதால் சில நேரங்களில் அவர் வாத்தியாரா அல்லது மாணவரா என்ற சந்தேகம் வருகிறது. அந்த அளவிற்கு இன்னமும் இளமையாகவே இருக்கிறார். சமுத்திரக்கனியின் சவாலை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு எப்படியாவது சாதிக்க வேண்டும் என்று போராடுகிறார். அவருடைய போராட்டமும், முயற்சியும் எப்படியாவது வெற்றி பெறவேண்டும் என்ற உணர்வு நமக்கும் படம் முழுவதும் வர வேண்டும். ஆனால், அதை நமக்குள் பெரும் தாக்கமாக ஏற்படுத்தத் தவறிவிட்டார் இயக்குனர். எப்படியும் தனுஷ் வெற்றி பெறுவார் என்ற கிளைமாக்சை நாமே யூகித்துவிடுவோம் என்பதே அதற்குக் காரணம். தனுஷின் நல்ல குணத்தைக் கண்டு அவரைக் காதலிக்கும் சக ஆசிரியையாக சம்யுக்தா. டீச்சர் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கேற்ற பாந்தமான தோற்றத்தையும், நடிப்பையும் வெளிப்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார். கல்வி தாளாளர், தந்தை என தற்காலத்தில் பெருமையாக அழைக்கப்படும் கல்வி வியாபாரியாக சமுத்திரக்கனி. தனியார் கல்வி நிறுவனங்கள், கோச்சிங் சென்டர்களின் 'டார்கெட்' மிடில் கிளாஸ் மக்கள்தான் என்று அவர் பேசும் வசனம் நூற்றுக்கு நூறு உண்மை. மற்ற கதாபாத்திரங்களில் ஊர் தலைவராக சாய்குமார், மாணவர் கென் கருணாஸ் ஆகியோர் மட்டுமே குறிப்பிடும்படி நடித்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஜிவி பிரகாஷ்குமார் இசையில் 'வா வாத்தி' பாடல் திரும்பத் திரும்பக் கேட்க வைக்கிறது. 1999, 2000 கால கட்டங்களில் நடக்கும் கதை. அந்த காலகட்டத்தைக் கண்முன் கொண்டு வந்திருந்தாலும் நம் மண்ணுக்குரிய வாசம் எங்குமில்லை. தெலுங்குப் படங்களில் மட்டுமே பார்த்த பல 'க்ளிஷே'வான காட்சிகள் ஆங்காங்கே வந்து போகிறது. படிப்பு, படிப்பு என படம் முழுவதும் இருப்பதால் 'போதனை' மட்டுமே நிறைந்திருக்கிறது, 'ரசனை' காணாமல் போய்விட்டது. வாத்தி - 55/100

கிராமத்து வீடு, பள்ளி, பூங்கொடி ஆசிரியர், காய் அறுக்கும் வாழைத்தோப்பு, லாரி ஆகியவற்றின் விவரிப்புகளுடன் சிவனனைந்தனின் உலகுக்குள் நம்மை இழுத்துச் செல்கின்றன ஆரம்ப காட்சிகள்.

தொண்ணூறுகளின் பிற்பகுதி திருநெல்வேலியிலுள்ள புளியங்குளம் கிராமம். விடுமுறை நாள்களில் குடும்பச் சூழல் காரணமாக வாழைத்தாரினை சுமக்கும் பணியைச் செய்கிறான் சிறுவன் சிவனனைந்தன் (பொன்வேல்). பள்ளியில் முதல் மாணவனாக இருக்கும் அவனுக்குக் காய் சுமப்பதில் சற்றும் விருப்பமில்லை. அவனது நண்பன் சேகரிடம் (ராகுல்) சேர்ந்து காய் அறுக்கும் இடத்துக்குச் செல்லாமல் இருக்கப் பல திட்டங்கள் போடுகிறான். இருப்பினும் தாயாரின் வற்புறுத்தலால் அதைத் தொடரும் சுழலலே அமைகிறது. இத்தனை நெருக்கடிக்கு மத்தியிலும் பள்ளியிலிருக்கும் பூங்கொடி (நிகிலா விமல்) டீச்சர் மீதான இனம்புரியா அன்பு அவனை ஆசுவாசப்படுத்துகிறது. இந்நிலையில் புற அரசியல் சூழல்களால் சிவனனைந்தனின் வாழ்வியல், அவனது ஆசை, தேடலை என்னவானது, அவன் வாழ்க்கை எத்தகைய இன்னல்களைச் சந்தித்தது என்பதை அவனின் பார்வையில் பேசுகிறது இந்த `வாழை'.

குத்தாட்டம் போடும் இடத்தில் கொண்டாட்டம், காய் அறுப்பு என்று வார்த்தையைக் கேட்டாலே மிரட்சி, டீச்சரைப் பார்க்கும் இடத்திலெல்லாம் மனதுக்குள் பட்டாம்பூச்சி என சிவனனைந்தனுக்கு உயிர் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் பொன்வேல். 'ம்பா... ம்பா...' எனப் பதறும் இடத்திலும், 'பேசுமா என்கிட்ட பேசுமா' என்று கெஞ்சும் இடத்திலும் அவருக்காகக் கண்கள் பனிக்கிறது. அவரது நண்பராக வரும் சேகர் கமல் ரசிகராக அடிக்கும் லூட்டி, வகுப்பறையில் கலாட்டா எனச் சிரிப்பு வெடிகளைக் கொளுத்தி பட்டையைக் கிளப்புகிறார். அனைவருக்கும் பிடித்துப் போகும் ஜாலியான டீச்சராக நிகிலா விமல், தன் பூங்கொடி கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு நியாயம் சேர்கிறார். ‘கொடுப்பதற்கு உழைப்பைத் தவிர என்னிடம் என்ன இருக்கிறது’ என்று கணவரில்லாமல் தவிக்கும் ஒரு தாயின் பரிதவிப்பை கண்முன் நிறுத்தியிருக்கிறார் ஜானகி. சுயமரியாதையோடு எதிர்த்து கேள்வி கேட்கும் தொழிலாளியாக மிளிர்கிறார் கலையரசன். வேம்புவாக வரும் திவ்யா துரைசாமியின் திரை நேரம் குறைவென்றாலும் நடிப்பில் குறையேதுமில்லை. புரோக்கர் பத்மன், வியாபாரி ஜெ.சதீஷ் குமார் என நடித்த அனைவரும் வட்டார மொழியில் வாழ்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

சுற்றிலும் பச்சை சுமக்கும் வாழைத்தோப்பு, காற்றில் வருடும் ஆவாரம் பூ, முள்ளில் ஏறும் ரயில் பூச்சி, கண்மாய் சேற்றைச் சுமக்கும் மனித கால்கள் என நெல்லை மண்ணின் கிராமத்து அழகியலைச் சிறப்பாகக் காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் தேனி ஈஸ்வர். குறிப்பாகக் கறுப்பு வெள்ளை காட்சிகளில் அவர் வைக்கும் அழுத்தமான பிரேம்கள் பதைபதைக்க வைக்கும் செல்லுலாயுடு ஆயுதம். வாழைக்கேற்ற உரம் போல இந்த காட்சிகளின் மீட்டர் அறிந்து கச்சிதமாகக் கோர்த்திருக்கிறார் படத்தொகுப்பாளர் சூர்யா பிரதாபன். சந்தோஷ் நாராயணனின் இசையில் ‘ஒரு ஊர்ல ஒரு ராஜா’, ‘தென்கிழக்கு தேன் சிட்டு’ ஆகிய பாடல்கள் நெஞ்சை வருட, க்ளைமாக்ஸ் காட்சியில் ஒலிக்கும் வயலின் பின்னணி இசை வாழையின் (கதையின்) வேரினைத் தொடுகிறது. இதைத் தாண்டி கொட்டடிக்கும் குடுகுடுப்பை, பறவைகளின் கிரீச்சிடும் சிறகுகள், ‘பாம்’, ‘பாம்’ என ஒலிக்கும் லாரியின் ஹாரன், தட்டப்படும் கதவுகள் என அஃறிணைகளை உயர்திணையாக உயர்த்தியிருக்கிறது சுரேன் மற்றும் அழகிய கூத்தனின் ஒலிப்பதிவு. கட்சிக்கு ஓட்டு கேட்கும் சுவரோவியம், தொண்ணூறுகளின் திரைப்பட சுவரொட்டிகள் என தன் பங்குக்குக் கலை இயக்குநர் குமார் கங்கப்பனும் பங்களித்திருக்கிறார்.

கிராமத்து வீடு, பள்ளி, பூங்கொடி ஆசிரியர், காய் அறுக்கும் வாழைத்தோப்பு, லாரி ஆகியவற்றின் விவரிப்புகளுடன் சிவனனைந்தனின் உலகுக்குள் நம்மை இழுத்துச் செல்கின்றன ஆரம்ப காட்சிகள். “ராஜாதி ராஜா இதுதான் உன் ராதாவா”, “இங்க ரஜினி படம் தாம்ல ஓடுது... கமல் படம் என்னைக்கு ஓடிருக்கு?” என்று சிறுவன் சேகர் சேட்டையாகப் பேசும் வசனங்கள் கைதட்டல் அள்ளுகின்றன. சிவனனைந்தன் உழைத்தே ஆக வேண்டும் என்கிற கட்டாயத்தில் சமூகம் பிடுங்குகிற குழந்தைப் பருவத்தையும், அதிலிருந்து சற்று ஆசுவாசம் செய்யும் பூங்கொடி டீச்சரின் பால்யகாலத்து அன்பையும் முதிர்ச்சியுடன் கையாண்டிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் மாரி செல்வராஜ். அதையே திரைக்கதையின் திருப்பங்களுக்குப் பயன்படுத்திய விதமும் சிறப்பு!

கொட்டுக்காளி விமர்சனம்: பேய் பிடித்திருப்பது மீனாவுக்கா, நமக்கா? படம் எழுப்பும் காத்திர கேள்விகள்!

காய் அறுப்பு, வாழைத் தாரினைச் சுமப்பது, வாழைத் தோட்டத்தின் பிரமாண்டம், லோடு வண்டியின் மேலே பயணப்படும் தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்கள் எனப் பாடலின் மான்டேஜ் காட்சிகளும் நம்மை நகரவிடாமல் பிடித்து வைத்திருக்கின்றன. முதல் பாதியில் கதாபாத்திரங்களின் உணர்வுகளைக் கடத்திய இயக்குநர் மெல்ல மெல்ல அந்த வாழைத்தாரின் சுமையை நமது தலையில் வைத்ததுபோலக் காட்சிகளை உலவவிடுகிறார்.

“என் பையன் நான் இல்லையானாலும் வாழவேண்டும். அவனுக்கு நான் உழைக்கக் கத்து தரேன்”, “நீ எங்களுக்கு குடுக்குற ஒத்த ரூபா இனாமில்ல... எங்க உழைப்புக்குத் தரக் கூலி” எனக் கதையின் போக்கிலேயே எழுதப்பட்ட வசனங்கள் சமூக நீதியையும், அனைவருக்குமான அரசியலையும் உயர்த்திப் பிடிக்கின்றன. சிரிப்பு, கோபம், அழுகை என்கிற உணர்வுகளைத் தாண்டி பசியின் கொடுமையை உணரும் காட்சியில் பார்வையாளர்களாக ஆடித்தான் போகிறோம் நாம். இறுதிக்காட்சியை நேர்கோட்டில் சொல்லாமல் நம்மைத் தயார் செய்ய வெவ்வேறு இடங்களுக்குச் சென்று ஒற்றை ரூபாய் நாணயத்தைத் தொட்டது உச்சமான திரைமொழிக்கு உதாரணம். முதல் பாதியும் இரண்டாம் பாதியும் இரு வேறு அத்தியாயங்களாகத் தெரிவது, க்ளைமாக்ஸின் தாக்கத்தை உணர்த்த விரிவாகக் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்ட பதைபதைக்கும் விபத்துக் காட்சி ஆகியவை இந்த 'வாழை'யின் சிறுசிறு குறைகள்.

இயக்குநர் மாரி செல்வராஜ் சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு நமது மங்கையர் மலர் இதழுக்கு பேட்டி ஒன்றை அளித்திருந்தார். அந்த பேட்டியில், தனக்கு பிடித்த, மறக்க முடியாத பெண்கள் பற்றி குறிப்பிட்டு இருந்தார். தனது அக்கா தன் மீது மிகுந்த அன்பு வைத்திருந்ததையும், அக்கா எதிர்பாராத விதமாக விபத்தில் இறந்து விட்டத்தையும் சோகத்துடன் அன்று அப்பேட்டியில் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். மறைந்த தனது அக்காவை நினைவு கொள்ளும் வகையில் இன்று 'வாழை' திரைப் படத்தை இயக்கியுள்ளார் மாரி செல்வராஜ். ரெட் ஜெயிண்ட் நிறுவனம் இந்த படத்தை வழங்குகிறது.

பரியேறும் பெருமாள், கர்ணன் படங்களை போலவே இந்த வாழை படத்திலும் நெல்லை மண்ணை கதை களமாக வைத்துள்ளார் மாரி. இந்த படம் கடந்த 1999 ஆம் ஆண்டு தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்டத்தில்  நடந்த ஒரு துயர சம்பவத்தை அடிப்படையாக கொண்டு உருவாகி உள்ளது.

திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டத்தில் ஒரு கிராமத்தில் எளிய கூலி வேலை செய்யும்  விவசாய குடும்பத்தை சேர்ந்தவன் சிறுவன் சிவனைந்தன். அப்பாவை சிறு வயதிலேயே இழந்தவன். இவனது அம்மாவும், அக்காவும் லாரியில் அருகிலிலுள்ள ஊருக்கு சென்று வாழைத்தார்களை அறுத்து லாரியில் ஏற்றும் பணிகளை செய்து வருகிறார்கள். விடுமுறை நாட்களில் சிவனைந்தனும், இவனது நண்பன் சேகரும் கூட இப்பணிகளை செய்து வருகிறார்கள். ஒரு சனிக்கிழமை விடுமுறை நாளில் அம்மாவை ஏமாற்றி விட்டு, பள்ளிக்கு நடன ஒத்திகைக்கு சென்று விடுகிறான் சிவனைந்தன். அந்த சனிக்கிழமை நாளில் நடக்கும் துயரமான விஷயம் தான் வாழை .

தனது முந்தைய படங்களில் ஜாதி அரசியல் பற்றி பேசிய மாரி செல்வராஜ்  வாழை யில் கம்யூனிஸ்ட் அரசியலை தொட்டு சென்றிருக்கிறார். பள்ளியில் நடக்கும் சிறு சிறு உரையாடல்கள், ரஜினியா? கமலா? என மாணவர்கள் மத்தியில் நடக்கும் கோஷ்டி சண்டை, திருநெல்வேலியின் பசுமை... என முதல் பாதி முழுவதும் சிரிப்பும், அழகுமாக செல்கிறது. இரண்டாம் பாதி வாழ்க்கைக்கும், யதார்த்தத்திற்கு உள்ள வேறுபாட்டை புரிய வைக்க முயற்சி செய்கிறது.

பூவையும், கொடியையும் வரைந்து எனக்கு பிடித்த டீச்சர் பூங்கொடி என்று சொல்லும் காட்சி, ஒரு விபத்தை படமாக்கிய விதம் என பல இடங்களில் மாரி செல்வராஜ் சபாஷ் போட வைக்கிறார். பரியேறும் பெருமாளில் யோகிபாபு, கர்ணன் படத்தில் பாட்டி போன்ற படங்களில் சிறந்த துணை கதா பாத்திரங்களை உருவாக்கிய மாரி, வாழை யில் பூங்கொடி டீச்சராக நிகிலா, நண்பன் சேகராக ரகுவையும் தந்துள்ளார். இருவரும் சிறப்பாக நடித்துள்ளார்கள். மாஸ்டர் பொன் வேல் சிவனைந்தன் ரோலை முழுவதுமாக உள் வாங்கி நடித்து நம்மை கை தட்ட வைக்கிறார். அம்மாவாக நடிக்கும் ஜானகி, அக்காவாக நடிக்கும் திவ்யா துரைசாமி, கலையரசன் அனைவருமே சரியான தேர்வு.

சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் இசையில் இறுதியில் இடம் பெறும் ஒப்பாரி பாடல் நமக்கு கண்ணீரை வர வைக்கிறது. 'மஞ்சள் பூசும் மஞ்சள் பூசும் வஞ்சிக்கொடி, 'தூதுவளை இலை அரைச்சு' போன்ற பாடல்களை சரியான இடத்தில் பயன்படுத்தி இருப்பது நம்மை1990 களின் கால கட்டத்திற்கு அழைத்துச் செல்கிறது. விபத்தை தேனி ஈஸ்வர் கருப்பு -வெள்ளையில் காட்டியிருப்பது சிறப்பு. 

காதலுக்கு சிறுவனை தூதாக பயன்படுத்துவது போன்ற சில நெகட்டிவ் விஷயங்களும் இருக்கின்றன. படத்தின் இறுதி காட்சி இந்த நெகட்டிவிட்டியை மறக்க செய்து விடுகிறது. ஆடு, மாடுகளை போல் லாரியிலும், டிராக்டரிலும் பயணம் செய்யும் மனிதர்களின் உயிர்களுக்கு என்ன உத்தரவாதம் என்ற கேள்வியை எழுப்புகிறது இப்படம்.

இந்தியா போன்ற மூன்றாம் உலக நாடுகளில் மனித உயிர்கள் எத்தனை மலிவாக மதிக்கப்படுகிறது என்பதை சொல்கிறது வாழை . மனதில் வலியுடன் கூடிய வாழ்வியலை சொல்கிறது வாழை . இப்படம் நாளை (ஆகஸ்ட் 23) அன்று திரைக்கு வருகிறது.

வாழை Review: மாரி செல்வராஜின் உன்னத படைப்பு தரும் தாக்கம் என்ன?

தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்டம் புளியங்குளத்தில் தன் அம்மா மற்றும் அக்காவுடன் வசித்து வருகிறான் சிறுவன் சிவனணைந்தான் (பொன்வேல்). அவன் வாழ்க்கையில் வெறுக்கும் ஒரே விஷயம் வாழைத்தார் சுமப்பது. வறுமையான குடும்பம், அப்பா இல்லை, வாங்கிய கடனை அடைத்தாக வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக தாயின் வற்புறுத்தலால் பள்ளி விடுமுறை நாட்களில் பெரும் துயரத்துடன் வாழைத்தார்களை சுமக்க செல்கிறான். அதனால் இரவில் வலியால் துடிக்கிறான். வாழைத்தார் சுமக்கும் அவனது ‘கனமான’ வாழ்க்கையை இலகுவாக்குவது பூங்கொடி மிஸ் (நிகிலா விமல்). இப்படியாக கறுப்பு பக்கங்களும், நடுவே சில ‘கலர்ஃபுல்’ பக்கங்களும் சிவனணைந்தான் வாழ்க்கையை ஆட்கொள்கின்றன.

இதனிடையே, அதே ஊரில் வாழைத்தார் சுமக்கும் கனி (கலையரசன்) ஊதிய உயர்வு கேட்டு ஆட்களை திரட்டி போராடுகிறார். ஒருவகையில் அதற்கு ஒப்புக்கொள்ளும் முதலாளி, மற்றொருபுறம் ஆபத்தில் சிக்க வைக்கிறார். அது என்ன? சிவனணைந்தானுக்கு வாழை சுமப்பத்திலிருந்து விடுதலை கிடைத்ததா என்பது திரைக்கதை.

தன் வாழ்வின் உச்சபட்ச அழுகையின் தருணங்களையும், மகிழ்ச்சியின் நினைவுகளையும் ஒரு சேர கோத்து ‘உணர்வுபூர்வமான’ படைப்பை கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் மாரி செல்வராஜ். சொற்ப கூலிக்காக, உயிர்கொடுத்து வாழைத்தாரை சுமந்து செல்லும் அம்மக்களின் வாழ்வியலையும், அது சிறுவனின் உளவியலில் ஏற்படுத்தும் தாக்கத்தையும் சமரசமின்றி அழுத்தமாக பதிவு செய்கிறது படம். அதேசமயம் கண்ணீர் மழையை பொழியும் காட்சிகளை உருக்கி உருக்கி வடிக்காமல், வெகுஜன ரசனையை ஈர்க்கும் படத்தின் திரைமொழி கவனம் பெறுகிறது.

சிவனணைந்தான் மற்றும் அவனது நண்பனுக்கு இடையிலான நட்பு, ரஜினி, கமல் ரெஃபரன்ஸ், “நம்மூர்ல ரஜினி படம் தான் ஓடுது. கமல் படம் எங்க ஓடுது” என்ற வசனம், அதையொட்டிய காட்சிகள், ‘பூவே உனக்காக’, ‘பிரியமுடன்’ போஸ்டர்கள், கர்சீஃப் காட்சி என ஜாலியாக நகரும் படத்தின் தொடக்கம் ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது. தனக்கு பிடித்த ஆசிரியை மீது அந்தப் பருவத்தில் விளையும் ஈர்ப்பை எந்த வகையிலும், கொச்சையாகவோ, மிகைப்படுத்தியோ சொல்லாமல் மிக கவனமாக நேர்த்தியாக கையாண்டியிருப்பது பாராட்டுக்குரியது. நிகிலா விமலிடம், மாணவன், “நேத்து எங்க அம்மா மாதிரி அழகா இருந்தீங்க டீச்சர். இன்னைக்கு அக்கா மாதிரி” என சொல்லும் வசனம் அழகு! இதற்கு மறுபுறம், மற்றொரு காதலையும், மெல்லிய உணர்வுடன் 2 ரெட்ரோ பாடல்களின் வழியே கடத்தியிருந்தது அட்டகாசமான திரையனுபவம்.

கொத்தடிமை வாழ்க்கை, ஒரு ரூபாய் கூலி உயர்வு போராட்டம், அதனால் ஏற்படும் இழப்பு, இடைத்தரகர்களின் வஞ்சகம், கம்யூனிஸ்ட், அம்பேத்கர் குறியீடுகள் என உழைக்கும் மக்களின் வலியை அழுத்தமாக பதிய வைக்கிறது படம். எல்லாவற்றையும் தாண்டி கட்டிப்போட்டு உலுக்கும் இறுதிக் காட்சியின் தாக்கத்தை படம் முடிந்தும் உணர முடிகிறது. மாரி செல்வராஜின் ‘உருவக’ காட்சிகளின் டச் இப்படத்தில் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது.

தேர்ந்த கலைஞர்கள் கூட தோற்றுப்போகும் அளவுக்கு, வலி, வேதனை, கண்ணீர், தாயிடம் கெஞ்சி மன்றாடுவது, களைப்பினால் சோர்ந்து வீழும் இடம் என உணர்வுகளை நடிப்பில் வரித்து மிரட்டியிருக்கிறார் சிறுவன் பொன்வேல். உற்ற தோழனாக, டைமிங்கிலும், யதார்த்தமான நடிப்பிலும் ஈர்க்கிறார் மற்றொருவர் சிறுவன் ராகுல். பால்ய கால ஆசிரியரை நினைவூட்டும் நிகிலா விமல், க்ளோசப் ஷாட்களில் முகத்தில் உணர்வுகளை கச்சிதமாக வெளிப்படுத்தி, இனம்புரியா உணர்வுகளைக் கொண்ட சிறுவனை ‘ஹேண்டில்’ செய்யும் முறையில் முதிர்ச்சியான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார்.

ஆக்ரோஷமான இளைஞனாக கூலிக்காக போராடும் கலையரசன், வாழைத்தாரை தாங்குவது போல கதாபாத்திரத்தை நேர்த்தியாக தாங்கி கிராமத்து பெண்ணாக ஈர்க்கும் திவ்யா துரைசாமி கச்சிதமான தேர்வு. சிறுவனின் தாயாக நடித்துள்ள ஜானகி இறுதிக்காட்சியில் அட்டகாசமான நடிப்பால் பாரத்தை இறக்கிவிடுகிறார். அவருக்கு தனி பாராட்டுகள்!

கமல் குறித்து பேசும் காட்சியில், ‘நாயகன்’ பட இசையை மெல்லிதாக ஓட விடுவது, உருக்கமான காட்சிகளுக்கு உயிரூட்டி உணர்வுகளாக்கியிருப்பது, தேவையான இடங்களில் அமைதியின் வழியே அழுத்தம் சேர்ப்பது என சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் பின்னணி இசையில் மிரட்டுகிறார். ‘தென்கிழக்கு தேன் சிட்டு’, ‘பாதவத்தி’ பாடல்கள் சிறப்பு. கறுப்பு வெள்ளையிலும், ஷில்அவுட்டிலும் காட்சிகளை நனைத்து, மூச்சிறைக்க ஓடும் சிறுவனின் உணர்வுகளை கடத்தி, மாரி செல்வராஜின் நினைவுகளுக்கு உயிரூட்டுகிறது தேனி ஈஸ்வரின் கேமரா. ஒலிக்கலை நேர்த்தி.

பொறுமையாக நகரும் கதை தான் என்றாலும் எங்கேயும் அயற்சி ஏற்படுத்தாமல் சுவாரஸ்யமாக கடப்பது பலம். மீண்டும் மீண்டும் ஒரே இடத்தில் காட்சிகள் சுற்றுவதாக சிலருக்கு தோன்றலாம். வெறும் வலியை மட்டும் திணித்து கடத்தாமல், வெகுஜன ரசனையிலும், திரை அனுபவத்திலும் கவனம் செலுத்தியிருக்கும் உன்னதமான இப்படம் இறுதியில் உங்களை ஆட்கொள்ளும்.
