Become a qualified heavy goods vehicle (HGV) or bus driver

Driver cpc part 2 test: case studies.

You can book the part 2 case studies test of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence ( CPC ) as soon as you’ve got your provisional licence. You do not need to have passed the Driver CPC part 1 theory test.

If you’re requalifying as a heavy goods vehicle ( HGV ) or bus driver by taking parts 2 and 4 of the test, you cannot book your test online. You have to book by phone instead.

Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency customer services Telephone: 0300 200 1122 (choose option 01) Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm Find out about call charges

What to take to your test

You must bring one of the following:

  • a Great Britain photocard driving licence
  • a Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart
  • an EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart, if you have one)

If you do not have a photocard driving licence, bring your paper licence and a valid passport.

Your test will be cancelled and you’ll lose your fee if you do not bring the right documents.

Revision and practice

You can use books or software to revise for the test and take practice tests.

You can buy:

  • Driver CPC : the Official DVSA Guide for Professional Goods Vehicle Drivers online if you’re learning to drive a lorry
  • The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Buses and Coaches book if you’re learning to drive a bus or coach

How the test works

The test is made up of 7 case studies you work through on a computer. The case studies are short stories based on situations that you’re likely to come across in your working life.

You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study.

The test lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the pass mark is 40 out of 50.

Your test result

You’ll get a letter with the results at the test centre.

You need the test pass reference number when you book your Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test.

The pass letter is valid for 2 years.

You need to pass the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test within 2 years, otherwise you’ll have to pass the part 2 case studies test again.

If you fail the test

You’ll get a result letter with feedback telling you why you’ve failed.

You can book another case studies test straight away, but you cannot take it for another 3 clear working days.

Cancelled tests

You can apply for a refund of out-of-pocket expenses if DVSA cancels your test at short notice.

Like with Driving Theory 4 All’s practice case studies, the real test will also be on a computer. You’ll see 7 case studies in the real DVSA test and each case study has 6 – 8 multiple choice questions you will need to answer. The test is marked out of 50 and you need to score at least 40 to pass. Another essential piece of information is the length of the CPC Module 2 theory test. Well, it’s 1 hour and 15 minutes but you can leave if you finish before the time is up.

1. What you need to know about the LGV case studies

The case studies are designed to test your knowledge (basic recall of facts), comprehension (basic understanding) or application (practical use of knowledge and understanding).

This is done by creating a scenario or a set of circumstances that you may encounter in your working life as a professional driver. You will then be asked a number of questions, relating to this scenario, which will require you to consider how you would behave / react in each case.

The material in our learning section will prepare you for these tests and we have 60 case studies for you to practice on.

2. What’s covered in the LGV CPC Module 2 test?

3. How much is the LGV Driver CPC Module 2 theory test?

The case studies test is cheaper than the part 1 theory test. The theory test will cost you £23 and can be booked with the DVSA on the GOV.UK website.

Failed my CPC mod 2 twice. I bought this as there is no other revision out there. I've got to say the case study questions seem a bit hard but obviously if you put the time in to practice they get alot easier. I passed my CPC mod 2 straight away after purchasing this app so I'm happy. If I had known about this app on my first test I would of bought it then and would of stopped myself failing.

Google User

Hard questions compared to the official test, however if you ask me that's a good thing because it makes your test seem easy. 5*** thanks for the help. Price : Worth the money all day long I wouldn't of passed without it.

Definitely worth the price, this case study practice test is harder than the official test, this app makes people pass FIRST TIME. Highly recommend it, passed my official theory first time thanks to this App.

This app is so useful as there's so many things to learn for the HGV module 2. Edit: After a month of using this app I passed my mod 2 cpc first time

I was told that there was no revision material for the CPC test. This App got me through the test first time! I would suggest reading the "Info" section in the App. Once you've completed that, start doing some "Practice Case Studies," then go onto the "Official Style Tests." I scored 47/50 on the day, and as a first timer, I don't think I could've passed without this App. I would highly recommend it to any newbies looking to pass their CPC first time. Good luck in your exam!

Booked my CPC case studies then downloaded this app I didn’t stop using it for three days; this app helped a lot couldn’t have passed without it, thanks.

Initial Driver CPC Training

All professional LGV and PCV (lorry and bus) drivers legally must hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence certificate / Driver CPC qualification before they drive for living. Bains Training Services is one stop leading Driver CPC training provider in London to train you for Driver CPC qualifacations.

There are four modules in the Driver CPC: two are the same as the tests you’ll take for getting your LGV, PCV licence.

  • Theory test is the same test as for your LGV licence
  • Driver CPC case study test
  • Driving ability test: this is the same as the practical test for your LGV licence
  • Driver CPC demonstration test / Driver CPC Module 4

You can find more information about Driver CPC on GOV.UK or you can watch this DVSA video for an overview of the Driver CPC. You can also access the HGV and PCV industry guide to driver CPC.

As soon as you’ve passed all four modules, you’ll get a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which you must carry with you while you’re driving a LGV / Truck or PCV / Bus.

Module 2 Driver CPC Case study

Candidates must pass the case study test before they take the practical D emonstration test. Like the theory test, it is a computer based test. There are different case studies for LGV drivers and PCV drivers. Case studies are short scenarios that you may face in your daily practice. We deliver Module 2 Driver CPC training in our office or you can buy study material from us and parctice at home on your computer. For module 2 training we sell DVDs and books to read and practice.

The case study test lasts 75 minutes and covers 7 case studies, 6 - 8 multiple choice questions from each case study with a possible maximum score of 50. Candidates need to score at least 40 out of 50 to pass the test. Before you start the test, you can have a practice session of up to 15 minutes.

Please watch the Driver CPC Module 2 case study video for an overview of test.

Module 4 Driver CPC Demonstration Test

Driver CPC Module 4 training is all about the safety and security of the vehicle. It is the second part of Driver CPC. Once you have passed your Module 2 (Case study test) you will need to go ahead with the Module 4 (Demonstration test). It lasts for 30 minutes with a pass mark of 80% with 15 out of 20 in each subject. Once you have passed, you will receive your Driver Qualification Card (DQC). The card will be valid for 5 years and you will then have to complete 35 hours Driver CPC Periodic training (Classroom training).

Driver CPC Module 4 training has two different versions. One for truck drivers called Driver CPC Module 4 Training for LGV . Driver CPC Module 4 Training for bus drivers called as Driver CPC Module 4 training for PCV . Module 4 needs to be completed by both LGV and PCV drivers. LGV drivers will need to demonstrate the use of the DVSA Load Securing Demonstration Trolley. Please watch the video that meets your needs.

Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge and ability in the following subject areas:

  • Ability to load the vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use
  • Security of the vehicle and contents
  • Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants
  • Ability to assess emergency situations
  • Ability to prevent physical risk

Tachographs

TACHOGRAPH MODES

There are four modes that a driver must use on a tachograph whether digital or analogue:

lgv driver cpc case study

Your tachograph card should be inserted into the tachograph unit whenever you take charge of a vehicle.

The card records a period of at least 28 days of activity and includes:

  • Driving Time
  • Periods of Availability

Driver card data should be downloaded every 28 days and the vehicle tachograph unit data should be downloaded every 90 days using a company smart card

LOST, STOLEN OR DAMAGED

If your tachograph card is lost, stolen or damaged, you must report it to the DVLA within seven days.

You can drive for a maximum of 15 days without a tachograph card if it’s been lost, stolen or damaged.

However, if you don’t have a replacement card by the end of the 15 day period, you must cease driving vehicles with a digital tachograph.

WAITING FOR A REPLACEMENT DIGITAL TACHOGRAPH CARD

While waiting for a replacement card, you should take a printout at the start and end of each shift. Listing manual entries on the back of the printout.

Forgetting your card is not a valid reason for driving without it . If you’ve left your card at home, you will need to return to collect it before starting your shift.

Replacement cards can be received in the post or collected from a local DVSA testing station or a DVLA office.

In Northern Ireland, they must be collected in person at a local vehicle licencing office or DVA test centre

Manual Printouts

You must write your driving licence or digital card number on each printout

DOUBLE MANNING

Drivers must change their digital driver cards between the “slot 1 and slot 2” in the vehicle unit as they swap between driving,  breaks, periods of availability and other work.

Digital tachograph units are programmed to record driving against the card in “slot 1” whenever the vehicle is moving. Failure to swap the cards risks recording inaccurate periods of consecutive driving on one driver’s card

OUT OF SCOPE DRIVING

When driving takes place on roads that are not the public highway. This can be considered to be ‘out of scope’ and does not count towards driving time but instead counts as other work.

Note – If you drive for any amount of time on a public highway, then all driving you undertake for the remainder of that day will count as driving, even if it is off road.

Universal Time Co-ordinated (UTC)

The internal clock of a digital tachograph is set to Universal Time Co-ordinated (UTC). It is the same as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). A driver must remember that UTC is one hour behind British Summer Time. Between 01.00 on the last Sunday in March and 01.00 on the last Sunday in October, you must account for the difference when inputting details in the digital tachograph.
