There are roughly 80 PhD students in the graduate program, and 15-20 join each year. It is a rigorous program targeted at excellent students. Beginning in Year 5, the Fifth-year PSD PhD Student Progress Review form must be completed and returned to the SAA by November 15th. The form contains a written plan for the remainder of the student's graduate program. The signature of each member of the Committee on the report certifies their agreement with the written plan.

Students are expected to present progress in their PhD work to the thesis committee once during year 3, and again once during year 4.
