While most people consider the holidays “the most wonderful time of the year,” for some students, not so much. With families to care for, holiday parties to prepare for and gift shopping to finish in between, finding time to complete schoolwork may seem down right impossible. For students, the mounting stress of the holidays can result in late assignments, or, even worse, assignments never submitted at all.

But it’s important to remember that late assignments and missed assignments will have a negative effect on your grade.  A failing or incomplete grade  can affect your graduation plans. And that’s not very merry at all. So instead of waiting until the last minute and panicking the night before a deadline, here are seven strategies you can use to ensure your homework gets done on time and gift yourself a much needed break.

1. Plan Ahead

It’s easy to lose track of deadlines when the days are filled with holiday fun, and that doesn’t leave much time, or thought, for course work. Even with so many (welcome) distractions, it’s important to complete schoolwork on time. To better pace yourself, create a schedule for what assignments are due and when, and break up that work into smaller chunks. Keep this schedule in an easy-to-see place so you can avoid any last minute surprises.  

2. Save the Easy Assignments for Later

When you first sit down for a school session, you may feel inclined to get the easy material out of the way. However, your energy and focus are at their peak when you first start. Use this brainpower advantage to get through the most challenging subjects early on. Then, should you really experience holiday and homework crunch time, you’ll be able to complete the smaller assignments with less stress and in less time.

3. Enlist the Elves

You have your your own helpers who are ready and willing to lend a hand: your spouse, kids, siblings, parents, in-laws, grandparents, the list goes on. Instead of feeling obligated to handle all the holiday hoopla alone, get your helpers involved. Let a family member supervise the cooking or make a gift pit stop for you so you can get away for half an hour or so. Or, spend your bonding time with family wisely; instead of finding gifts for your kids to give grandma and grandpa, save yourself an extra shopping trip and sit down together to handcraft something special. Not only will you save time and money, you’ll also have a wonderful family memory. And isn’t that what the holidays are supposed to be about?

4. Be Realistic

The holiday season is also a hectic one; unrealistically high expectations for yourself may cause your schoolwork to suffer. Trying to do too much will leave you drained and burnt out. Combat this by asking your family which holiday traditions they treasure the most, and cut out the rest. If your teenagers don’t enjoy holiday light shows anymore, then save yourself the trip and use it to get your schoolwork done instead. And when you’ve finished, you can spend your time doing the things your kids actually do like. Be reasonable with your time, and you can balance work and holiday fun.

5. Shop Smart

Obviously, you can save yourself a lot of time, money and hassle by shopping online. But being savvy about it can make all the difference. Give yourself a time limit to scour sites for the best deals and comparison shop. If you don’t find a better offer online after 10 minutes, stop, and move on. Most importantly, avoid or turn off any sale alerts. If you keep leaving your schoolwork behind to check your email inbox for the latest deals, you’ll never get it done. Save the emails for later; in a few hours, the sales will still be there.

6. Reward Yourself

Take breaks in between studying by giving yourself an extra holiday treat or two, or spend it with friends and family. How many times have you found yourself still staring at your textbook around midnight (or later!) even when you started your homework hours earlier? Those lost hours could be explained by Parkinson’s Law, which states, “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.” In other words, if you give yourself all night to memorize those geometry formulas for your quiz tomorrow, you’ll inevitably find that a 30 minute task has somehow filled your entire evening.

We know that you have more homework than ever. But even with lots and lots to do, a few tweaks to your study routine could help you spend less time getting more accomplished. Here are 8 steps to make Parkinson’s Law work to your advantage:

1. Make a list

This should be a list of everything that has to be done that evening. And we mean, everything—from re-reading notes from this morning’s history class to quizzing yourself on Spanish vocabulary.

2. Estimate the time needed for each item on your list

You can be a little ruthless here. However long you think a task will take, try shaving off 5 or 10 minutes. But, be realistic. You won’t magically become a speed reader.

3. Gather all your gear

Collect EVERYTHING you will need for the homework you are working on (like your laptop for writing assignments and pencils for problem sets). Getting up for supplies takes you off course and makes it that much harder to get back to your homework.

The constant blings and beeps from your devices can make it impossible to focus on what you are working on. Switch off or silence your phones and tablets, or leave them in another room until it’s time to take a tech break.

5. Time yourself

Noting how much time something actually takes will help you estimate better and plan your next study session.

6. Stay on task

If you’re fact checking online, it can be so easy to surf on over to a completely unrelated site. A better strategy is to note what information you need to find online, and do it all at once at the end of the study session.

7. Take plenty of breaks

Most of us need a break between subjects or to break up long stretches of studying. Active breaks are a great way to keep your energy up. Tech breaks can be an awesome way to combat the fear of missing out that might strike while you are buried in your work, but they also tend to stretch much longer than originally intended. Stick to a break schedule of 10 minutes or so.

8. Reward yourself! 

Finish early? If you had allocated 30 minutes for reading a biology chapter and it only took 20, you can apply those extra 10 minutes to a short break—or just move on to your next task. If you stay on track, you might breeze through your work quickly enough to catch up on some Netflix.

As the holiday season approaches, the prospect of juggling festive celebrations with academic responsibility is a difficult balance for most students. You need to study during the holidays, but want to have fun too.

Between cozy nights by the fire, festive parties with loved ones and the aroma of freshly baked goods, study deadlines loom large.

As an online student who’s always had a self-directed course schedule, I’ve had years of experience with no choice but to study every holiday season to keep myself moving forward towards my goals.

With the right approach and a solid plan, you can absolutely achieve your study goals while savouring the joys of the season.

From how to manage your time to creating a conducive study environment amidst all the holiday cheer, these tips will help you make the most of your study sessions.

Should I Study During the Holidays?

The holidays bring on the classic series of questions: “Should I even bother to study during the holidays? If so, how can I keep myself motivated? Do most students study during the holidays?”

It’s the classic conundrum we all struggle with: we’re excited for the festivities, but we don’t know how to effectively manage both.

Why you should study during the holidays:

• You have finals scheduled shortly after the break.
• You need to improve on concepts you’re weak on.
• You need to catch up.
• You want to get ahead for the upcoming term.
• You’re studying on a self-directed schedule and don’t have an “official” break.

It’s easy to forget what you’ve learned if you don’t keep practicing, even for a short two week break. The saying “Use it or loose it” is very true!

Major holidays like Easter, Christmas, Hanukkah and Ramadan require determination, willpower and a plan to meet your study goals.

No matter if you’re adult learner, a parent with small children or you’re traveling to see friends and family, this post will help you study effectively during the holidays.

This one may seem obvious, but going into the holiday season with the mindset of actively making time for your studies is the first step to success.

This doesn’t mean giving up things you’re looking forward to however, but consciously saying no to events that you’re not super pumped about. If you don’t really want to attend that Boxing Day brunch but feel your family expects you to, have the strength to say no.

It’s your future you’re responsible for, and not the expectations of your parents, friends or anyone else. Recognize that saying no is an act of strength and honouring your personal goals.

Safeguard your energy during the holiday season – there’s more going on than you think.

A day of festivity or recreation when no work is done. – Definition of “holiday” from Oxford Languages

The official definition of the noun holiday says it all: they are meant to be enjoyed. It’s not realistic to say you’re going to study for 8+ hours every day during your break.

You also aren’t going to get through an entire chapter plus doing all the review questions in one day. I’ve tried, and there’s no way it’s doable no matter how short the chapter is. That’s just setting yourself up for disappointment to make yourself feel bad if you don’t meet your overly ambitious goals.

It also says A DAY, not your entire break. So if you want to come out of your holiday with accomplished tasks, don’t let break days roll into each other.

When creating a holiday study schedule, I’ve found a task-based schedule works best over a rigid time block schedule. This allows flexibility for fun events that inevitably pop up during the holidays.

Here’s how to create your holiday study schedule:

• Write down all the dates of known events and plan study around those. If you can, try and give yourself at least 1-2 days a week where you’re not at an event.
• List out all the urgent tasks you must complete by the end of your break and add those to your schedule.
• Make sure to include break days! I recommend adding full break days to coincide with major events, such as Christmas Day or Easter Sunday.

After you happily create your perfect holiday study schedule and start to dig in, be prepared to have some disruptions thrown in.

That unexpected party invite, a cousin coming into town at the last minute or drinking too many mimosas at the Breakfast With Santa Brunch are all examples of real situations that made me have to adjust my study plan. C’est la vie!

Embrace flexibility to enjoy the holidays.

While spending time with family and friends is an important part of the holiday season, it’s crucial to communicate your academic priorities and the importance of dedicated study time.

By respectfully communicating your need for uninterrupted study time up front, you can better balance academic responsibilities and quality time with loved ones.

Let them know that your closed door means “I’m studying, please do not interrupt.” However, if your family is prone to barging in, you could even tape a sign to your door that says “Do not disturb, studying in progress” as a gentle reminder.

Trying to study at the kitchen table while your family makes holiday cookies and drinks mulled wine isn’t going to be a very productive experience for you.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the season, a designated study area provides a place free from distraction where you can concentrate on your studies.

Whether it’s a corner of your bedroom or your favourite library cubicle, having a dedicated study environment will help keep you motivated and focused.

If you’re traveling over the holiday season, seek out a space as soon as you arrive. It could mean renting a daily coworking space (such as a WeWork ), finding a cozy coffee shop or studying on campus of the local university’s public library.

And just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to study in bed. It’s ok to do some reading or watch a lecture or two from under the comfort of your fluffy duvet, but do the majority of your studying at a proper table.

Even if you’re not a morning person, it might be worth it to get up a bit earlier during the holiday season as most events take place in the evening or at night.

Getting studying done early makes it easier to have fun come nighttime knowing you’ve completed all your tasks for the day. There are no thoughts of the tasks you need to do when you get home from that big dinner, which you know is just going to make you sleepy.

Whether it’s your phone, social media, email or the tv, turn them off (or put them on silent) to focus on you study session.

If social media on your phone is too tempting, put it away in your bag or use a study focus app like Forest that deters you from checking your messages.

When studying during the holidays, break your study sessions into small, manageable chunks.

By studying in shorter sessions, you can make efficient use of your time, retain more information and avoid the dread that you need to study for hours before you can join in on the festivities.

If you are doing longer study sessions, remember to schedule in study breaks. Study methods like the pomodoro study technique are great because they factor in regular break times to help you avoid study fatigue and session burnout.

Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean everyone is taking time off. Engage with your favourite studygram communities on Instagram to keep your motivation going!

Other study communities you can join:

• Discord study groups
• Your course’s online discussion forums
• Facebook groups for your university, or general Facebook study groups

Getting together in person with another student not only carves out designated study time, but it also keeps you accountable – you’re less likely to blow off your friend if you’ve set up a time to meet. However, make sure it’s someone who you’ll actually study with, and not just sit and chat with your books open.

Or, if you have online study friends thanks to the study communities you’re in, set up a Zoom session!

If you don’t know any other students to meet with, arrange a study session with a friend who’s not in college but is doing self-study. Anyone who’s learning a language on Duolingo or taking courses through Coursera still needs to put in study hours.

Many of us travel during the holidays, and some students travel cross-continental. Being organized at all times is the only way you’re going to be able to study effectively during the holidays.

Double check you have everything you need before you leave. This includes laptop and phone chargers, notebooks and calculators.

Use on the go study apps like Quizlet , and any apps like Pearson that contain digital textbooks should be downloaded and checked before you leave to ensure they can be used offline.

Use commute time, waiting time or flying time to squeeze in study. Every minute counts, and you’ll be surprised how much you can get done on your journey to your destination.

Including self-care activities into your study routine is essential for maintaining physical and mental well-being, especially during the busy holiday season.

Amidst all the demands at this time of year, it’s easy to neglect yourself. However, not taking time out for your health leads to increased stress, exhaustion, and decreased productivity. Prioritizing self-care activities such as proper sleep, regular exercise and healthy nutrition not only rejuvenate your mind and body but also help to enhances cognitive function and learning ability.

So take that bubble bath with candles, buy those cozy flannel sheets and go for that walk when the sun is shining despite the snow on the ground. You’ll thank yourself for it, and don’t forget to bring your positive attitude!

How to get started and on top of your holiday homework

We know school has finished, or is just about over for the year for most students, and the last thing you probably want to think about right now is completing your holiday homework.  Let us tell you it is important to do, particularly for those in senior years at school, and that you want to get on top of your holiday homework early!

Unfortunately most students will push holiday homework aside and not even start to look at it until maybe sometime the week before school goes back.  Don’t let this be you as it will just create unnecessary stress and pressure.  Whilst you are not expected to study for 8 hours a day over the holidays, it is important you do set aside time to prepare and complete what you have been assigned to do as a minimum.

When working with our current students we have highlighted they would be better to start now and spread out what they need to do by chipping away at it.  For may we have set them the a goal of trying to get most of it done prior to Christmas and then reviewing again just before they go back.  Do you think you could give that a go too?

So how do you get started and on top of your holiday homework? Steps to take:

• The second step is to work out what order you are planning to do it in and then allocate time to each task – naturally it is holidays so if you were planning to do a task tomorrow and something comes up just reschedule it until the next day or another time – you can be flexible!

• If you have had a step up to the next year level it is also important to re read any notes you have taken to assist consolidating that knowledge now rather than not doing anything with them until you go back to school.

A few other things that you can do include:

• going through your school notes from this past year and work out what materials you might like to reference again next year ie those subjects that you are continuing with and put them somewhere easily accessible.
• working out where your dedicated study space, or spaces, will be and set them up ready to work at.  Purchase any necessary stationery, books or supplies you need.

All we can do is to urge you to take notice of this advice and ensure you won’t be one of those students rushing to get your work done at the last minute.  For those of you in Year 12 it will be much better to start the year ahead wouldn’t you agree?

How to Complete Holiday Homework?

Holidays are always welcome and are a time for fun and freedom, away from the drudgery of school. It is the time to relax and follow one’s hobbies but is also the time to complete one’s holiday homework. Students dread holiday homework and tend to procrastinate till the very last day after which they get anxious and go to pieces. It’s best to take care of one’s holiday homework from the beginning of the holidays so that there is no last-minute panic.

Holiday homework is designed to keep students in touch with their lessons and reinforce what they have done in school. Children tend to get lazy during the holidays and so the school provides them with homework to be done during the summer vacation.

Simple Ways to Finish Holiday Homework in Time

However much children may dislike holiday homework, it still has to be done. We have a few simple tips on how to finish holiday homework fast. Children need to divide their time between completing holiday assignments, study and enjoyment.

Check the due date of each assignment and prioritise those assignments that are due first, as well as those that carry the most weightage for exams.

All subject teachers give a list of homework for the summer break. Read all the details mentioned in the assignment and divide the work and time needed during the break to complete it. Create a homework schedule around your holiday plans and try to adhere to it. Set aside some time for different subjects every day to work on your homework. If you have homework in multiple subjects, alternate your study time by doing one subject’s homework on Mondays and Wednesdays and another subject’s work on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Use a calendar to mark your study time and days and the assignments you want to work on each day.

• Find a Quiet Spot

It’s easy to get distracted when on vacation, so find a suitable, quiet spot for yourself. Make sure you are not disturbed and can finish your holiday homework in peace. When doing homework, sit there and do not leave till you have finished your work. Clear your study space and keep your study material ready. Ensure that there is comfortable seating and good lighting in your study space.

• No Distractions

Technology can be very distracting so make a habit of keeping your environment free of online distractions.  Keep your cellular phone, television, computer and laptop away while doing homework so that you can concentrate better and get the work done faster. There are apps to block online distractions temporarily which can be used for the amount of time you plan to do homework. There are also tools which are designed to track your time while accomplishing tasks.

• Start at the Beginning of the Vacation

Start doing the homework from day one and get it out of the way. If your teachers give the homework early, start doing it during any free time you get in school. That way you won’t have much to do during the summer break.

• Keep Everything Handy

Plan in advance and keep everything handy and neatly organised.. That way you won’t waste time and will finish the homework fast. Before you leave school for the holidays, ensure you have all of the required materials such as books, notebooks, stationery or any special materials required for the subjects you will work on. It may be difficult to get replacements for things that you forgot. Check your assignments before leaving school and make a checklist of things you need to complete your homework. Pack everything you need before you leave school.

• Ask for Help if Needed

Ask for help with homework if needed. Don’t get frustrated if you get stuck but instead ask someone for help.

• Time Yourself

Try to finish the homework in the stipulated time. This helps with time management and also prepares you to work under pressure. When a certain assignment is likely to take longer to complete, budget time for it while creating a schedule. Set an alarm and give yourself sufficient time to do your homework in the mornings. If you plan to work on your homework during the afternoon or evening, set a reminder to keep yourself on schedule and motivated. You can also set reminders on the digital calendar of a phone or tablet to get instant notifications. For those who use planners, write reminders there so that you know what and when to do your work.

• Take Breaks

Always remember to cater for breaks in your study time. Don’t overload yourself, give yourself a break of 10 to 15 minutes every hour or so. This improves the attention span and makes studying more effective.  

• Set Aside Time for Other Activities

It’s important to ensure that your homework schedule doesn’t interfere with your holiday plans and leisure activities. If you know you will be on vacation, reserve that time for enjoyment and leave your books at home.

• Study on Vacation

If you know you are going to have some lazy or free time during your vacation where nothing is planned, bring your school books with you and use that time to get some homework done. That way you can use your time productively without stressing yourself. At the same time, do not try to do homework at times when you cannot focus or when family activities are planned. During vacations, only do homework during the designated time or your leisure time.

• Check your Work

As holidays always have distractions, make sure that you proofread and check your work to make sure there are no mistakes. If possible, give yourself a couple of days after completing the assignment so that you can look at it with a fresh perspective while checking it. Try to edit your work at a time when you are not on vacation or interacting with family members. Find a quiet time during your holiday when you can revise the homework that you have done. You can also ask your peers to exchange assignments and edit them. Try to arrange this friend before the holidays start and fix a date to exchange and edit homework.

Why We Should Give Students a Homework Break Over the Holidays

I have so many fond memories from holiday seasons growing up: the smell of delicious food being made by my Mexican and Filipino families, warm light on the faces of my relatives, and lots of laughter. As I got older, though, things changed—mostly because I had so much homework to do.

Instead of joking with our relatives at the holidays, my brother and I would often sequester ourselves at the edge of the room, thick textbooks open and pens in our hands. Sometimes, we’d miss events altogether. When we did attend, the ramifications could be intense. During one spring break, I chose to go to an Easter party with my family. But by midnight, I was stress-weeping because I had so much work to do by the next day.

As a teacher, I now understand the temptation to give work over school breaks. There never seems to be enough time to do the projects or read the texts I’d like to with my kids, and asking students to work or read during breaks eases that crunch. I also worry that my students will lose some of their learning in the weeks they are gone.

Recently, though, my school created a new homework policy that, among other things, encourages us to avoid giving students work over extended school breaks. Our administration cited studies that raise questions about the benefits of hefty doses of homework.

I worried about how this new plan would affect my curriculum pacing, and about what my students might “lose.” But I realized that my concerns were really about my desires, not what was best for my students.

The new policy led me to re-evaluate my assignments and timing, and I ended up being able to make adjustments so my kids could complete necessary projects without working when they should be recharging. I’d worried about my students’ learning, but recent research challenges our long-held belief that students’ learning “slides” significantly over long breaks.

Taking the stress of homework out of my students’ holiday breaks is important. They deserve an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate as much as I do—particularly if they are overscheduled to begin with. Young or old, we all need rejuvenation time. In addition, more studies are demonstrating the benefits of down time for students. Having unstructured time recharges them, but also allows their brains to build connections that strengthen and improve their executive functioning.

We need to be mindful of other factors that complicate homework assignments over holiday breaks. We don’t always know what our students’ lives are like outside our classrooms. Do they struggle with access to the resources necessary to complete assignments? Do they have stressful home situations?

Here are a few ways we can send our students off on a positive note when they leave us for holiday breaks. I’m trying them myself this winter!

Provide activities that support students reconnecting with themselves, their loved ones, or their community.

While we want to avoid giving mandatory work to students, we can offer opportunities and ideas for learning-friendly activities they can do during their break. Maybe that’s an optional/extra credit project that asks students to interview a family or community member (though we should also provide time after break for those who couldn’t work over break). Or maybe we can offer students some ideas about how they could use their time to take care of themselves or their communities. We could provide reflection questions once they’re back from break, to help them find meaning in the experience. Encouraging students to use their time to volunteer or take care of themselves allows us to help our kids grow not just as students, but as people.

Offer opportunities to find a new passion, set goals, or reflect.

While some students may travel or connect with family, some of our kids may have a lot of free time over their break. We can encourage them to use the time to set goals for the year, dream big and draw or write their five-year plan (remind them this is for fun and plans will change!), or reflect on their year or life so far. We can also encourage students to discover something they’re passionate about, or use the time to pursue something they love.

Deepen your relationships with students and allow them to open up to you.

Sometimes, our kids are simply not given the space to dive deeply into something that lets them tell us who they are. Give students a project that allows them to explore their identity or have them write a story about their lives. This will not only provide some critical thinking, reading, or writing enrichment, but more importantly will provide valuable insight into our students’ lives and help us build deeper connections with our students. We can return the favor by completing the project ourselves or writing a story and sharing it with them.

After the break, see what stuck with students.

Instead of returning from break with the mindset of what was “lost,” give students a chance to share everything they remember from the last unit. Instead of assuming they all had a great time they want to share, welcome kids back with an opportunity to celebrate the experiences that stuck with them from their breaks. Help students generate a class-created study guide so they can review what they learned before the break. This gives them space to support one another and remind each other what they learned, as well as gives us an opportunity to praise students for what they’ve retained. It also provides important feedback for us on what stuck over the break and what we need to reteach.

Ultimately, our students look to us not just for academic growth, but to support their growth as human beings as well. Taking away homework stress over break may cause us to change our short-term plans, but providing them with opportunities and resources instead can have some long-term benefits that can change their self-perception and their lives more than a packet of homework ever could.

The last thing your students want to do during their holidays is spending more time with their noses buried in textbooks. But who said homework had to be a dull and dreary activity? There’s plenty of time and then some to learn concepts at school; holiday homework can focus on skill-building and be a lot more fun! “Assignment 2: For the Wanderlusters”

Families often set out on trips during the holiday season. A trip is often a great platform to learn about new places and new cultures. Ask your students to document every bit of their travel, discover fascinating aspects about the place they’re visiting and turn their findings into a fantastic travel presentation for the class! It could cover a long vacation or even a day trip to the museum, beach or a nearby park.

“Assignment 3: For the Bookworms”

This creative assignment may not appeal to all your students, but the voracious readers in your class will surely welcome some binge-reading over the holidays! For this set of students, assign a list of books they can review over the holidays. Encourage them to get a library membership or even a Kindle, if they’re more accustomed to reading digitally. A school in New Zealand recently got its students involved in building an outdoor classroom and won an award for creativity! Volunteering as a homework idea will help them understand the kind of problems the world is facing, put things in perspective and also help them learn how to work in a team! You could give them a list of places they could visit over the holidays or plan a class trip yourself. Let them volunteer at an animal shelter, old-age home or orphanage, where they can perform different activities like maintaining the gardens, teaching other children, reading to the elderly, or even organising a performance for the underprivileged.

Holiday homework can be super fun if students collaborate and complete it in groups (or pairs). Look for helping hands only for any logical support. And get buddies on your schedule at home or simply pay them a visit.

Seeking assistance for holiday homework is a prevalent yet harmful practice. Try to stay away from these malpractices, and plan homework for summer vacation well to complete it on time. As per a leading journal, 90% of students approach homework specialists at the end time. On the other hand, around 60 to 70% of students approach them well in advance. Similarly, it is reported that middle-income families spend Rs. 300-400 on each project given during homework for summer vacation.

It feels like homework never stops getting piled on, and keeping track of it all can feel a little chaotic. That’s where a homework schedule comes in. With a good schedule, you won’t have to worry about missing homework assignments or not having enough time to finish them, and it’s surprisingly easy to put one together. Not sure where to start? Understanding What Needs To Get Done

• The subject or course in which the work is assigned (for example, Spanish , algebra , French or English )
• Know what you're expected to hand in or do and ask if you do not understand (for example, turn in an essay , develop a PowerPoint presentation, or take a test.)
• The details of your assignments (for example, double-spaced or single-spaced, blue ink or black).
• Page numbers (which pages you need to read, study, or refer to complete your assignment.)
• Due date of the assignment.

Getting All of Your Homework Done

• To solve this problem, if you cannot meet all the deadlines, use a static priority rate-monotonic policy. Find the course that releases new homework the most frequently, and list it the highest (do the work first), and so forth. This is mathematically optimal among all static-priority scheduling policies. In other words, if ANY static priority scheme can meet all the deadlines, the rate-monotonic static priority scheme will meet all the deadlines, too. When the static priority scheme misses deadlines, it is deterministic - the lowest priority class assignments will be skipped, so it behaves predictably when you are overloaded. If certain assignments have the same due date, then start with the one(s) that are hardest or will take the longest.

• If you have a five-page English paper due on Friday, evenly spread the total amount of hours you believe it is going to take to complete the paper between each day.
• If you have multiple assignments to complete in one night, it may be helpful to start with the most challenging on and leave the easier ones for later.
