Develop with Faculty Expertise and Support

Our faculty are pioneers and leaders in online higher education and are dedicated to supporting you on your educational journey. You will be assigned a faculty member who will guide you. A Faculty Advisor will review your master’s degree and discuss your career goals to ensure alignment of your EdD cognate electives.

During your final four applied research courses, a Faculty Consultant will be there to assist you in choosing a research project that focuses on a practical application in your field of expertise. The Consultant will help you with completing the Institutional Review Board process, choosing a methodology, collecting and analyzing data, and defending your research project.

This program is designed for working professionals with leadership experience who desire to lead K-12 schools, universities, community colleges or other educational settings.

To address the existing gaps in education, the EDL online program empowers students to lead change through an equity and social justice lens. The program will prepare students to improve academic opportunities and outcomes.

Program Overview

The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership online (EDL online) program prepares you to be a critically conscious leader equipped with strategic thinking, evidence-based research skills, and the ability to create equity and foster continuous organizational improvement. The online program offers four concentrations: K-12 Leadership in Urban School Settings, Leading Instructional Change, Higher Education Administration, and Educational Psychology.

Through this program, you will:

• Earn a doctorate recognized by employers in the field of education.
• Be able to maintain a full-time work schedule while taking two courses one night a week.
• Learn alongside a cohort of experienced educational professionals nationwide.
• Become equipped to address critical issues in historically marginalized communities and make a lasting impact.

The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (EDL) program will equip you with knowledge and skills in six core competencies:

• Accountability
• Critical reflection
• Diversity and equity
• Learning organizations
• Research and data

In the first year of the program, you will complete core courses that reflect USC Rossier’s mission and the program’s purpose. Explore the dynamics of power and privilege in education, leadership, and addressing inequities in learning opportunities. Subsequent coursework will build on this foundation and prepare you to become a leader in schools, colleges and universities or educational settings.

Online Concentration

Each concentration path includes four courses and a concentration-specific format for the dissertation in practice. A faculty member in your chosen concentration will provide guidance throughout your dissertation completion. Relevant career experience is a requirement for the concentration you select.

The K-12 leadership concentration will prepare you to become a leader in classrooms, schools or school districts. The courses help develop an understanding of how to create high-performing schools that address the diverse needs of all students regardless of school setting. The course sequence culminates in either EDUC 720: Leadership for Principals or EDUC 721: Leadership for Superintendents, an integrated composite of effective leadership practices that result in more effective organizational outcomes, including increased student achievement.

Recommended career background for this concentration:

Teacher, administrator or education professional in PK-12 education at the local, state and federal levels.

Dissertation in practice: Study an existing problem of practice and complete a traditional five-chapter dissertation.

Career Outcomes: The K-12 leadership concentration prepares you for employment as an educational leader in the K-12 field. This includes school site leadership, district leadership and systems leadership. Roles include teacher leaders, district office leaders, superintendents and CEOs of independent schools and charter schools.

This concentration is designed for individuals interested in leading and teaching teachers (pre- and in-service) and faculty (higher ed) so that they are prepared to provide their students with high-quality instruction that is anti-racist, culturally relevant and LGBTQ+ inclusive.

Recommended career background for this concentration: Teacher or administrator in PK-12 or higher education, instructional leader or designer, curriculum developer or professional in non-traditional educational settings.

Dissertation in practice: Conduct action or participatory action research addressing the relationship between leadership and instructional improvement in PK-20 educational settings and complete a non-traditional written product (not a five-chapter dissertation) and public presentation.   Career outcomes: The leading instructional change program prepares you for positions such as university faculty member, professional development specialist, curriculum developer/administrator and more.   Alumni have held positions such as:

Applicants are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000, without needing a separate application. However, scholarship availability may be limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. America needs transformative leaders in preK–12 education whose passion for education quality and equity is matched by a knowledge of learning and development, the organizational management skills to translate visionary ideas into practical success, and a firm grasp of the role of context and politics in shaping leadership. Graduates of the three-year, multidisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education will be prepared to become those leaders.

The Ed.L.D Program — taught by faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School — will train you for system-level leadership positions in school systems, state and federal departments of education, and national nonprofit organizations. Ed.L.D. is a full-time, three-year program built on a cohort learning model. Cohorts consist of up to 25 students from diverse professional backgrounds (including district/charter management leaders, nonprofit directors, principals, teachers, and policy researchers) who progress through the program together.  

All Ed.L.D. students receive a full tuition funding package plus stipends, work opportunities, and a paid third-year residency at a partner organization. 

The Ed.L.D. Program prepares graduates to do work for the public good in the American public education sector, whether that be at the system or state level. Specifically, the program is designed to accelerate the progress graduates make toward achieving meaningful impact in influential roles and/or crossing boundaries in the following spaces in the public education sector: 

• PreK–12 district or CMO leadership roles : superintendent of schools, chief academic officer, and/or deputy superintendent
• Foundation/philanthropy roles:  director, president and CEO, senior fellow

Curriculum Information

The Ed.L.D. curriculum is a balance of multidisciplinary coursework and practice-based learning. Core courses and electives are taught by recognized leaders from across Harvard’s graduate programs in fields like data-based education reform, organizational change and innovation, and effective leadership strategies for urban schools. You will develop and test your leadership skills through team projects and an immersive third-year residency.

All students in the cohort take the same classes in four foundational content areas: learning and teaching, leadership and organizational change, politics and policy, adult development, and leadership inside and out (including one-on-one executive coaching). Each cohort member works with program advisers to choose an individualized sequence of electives from any of the Harvard graduate schools. You will work closely with the program faculty and staff during your second year to determine the best match with a partner organization for your third-year residency. Matches are driven by mutual interest between the resident and the partner organization, and each student's career and learning goals and geographic preferences.

You will take part in a 10-month paid residency at one of our partner organizations. There, you will work on a strategic project which synthesizes your experience and learning into a written Capstone project. You will stay connected to your Ed.L.D. cohort and HGSE through technology and by returning to Harvard periodically for intensive workshops.

Paid Residency 

Our partner organizations include school systems and departments of education, as well as some of the nation's most influential and dynamic nonprofit, mission-based for-profit, and philanthropic organizations.

You will be intentionally pushed out of your comfort zones and asked to work systemically and make a significant contribution to the partner organization. In addition, the residency will provide you with the professional mentoring, practical experiences, and network of connections they need to position themselves as future leaders in the education sector. 

Strategic Project 

You will define (with supervisors from your partner organization) a strategic project on which to focus. You will have the opportunity to lead one or two major efforts on behalf of the organization, such as the creation or implementation of current initiatives. The project allows you to practice and improve leadership skills, add important value to the mission and strategy of the partner organization, work systemically, and hold high-level accountability.

During the residency period, you will produce a written Capstone. The Capstone is a descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of your third-year leadership contributions to a strategic project within an Ed.L.D. partner organization. It is a demonstration of your ability to engage others, develop strategy to successfully address and diagnose challenges, work toward a vision and goals, and learn from the results.

How is the third third-year residency determined? Will I get to choose where I go and for whom I work?

You will work closely with Ed.L.D. Program faculty during your second year to determine the best partner organization match for your third-year residency. In ascertaining a match, faculty take a number of factors into account, including a students' career goals and geographic preferences. The program expects that the current list of partners will continue to grow based on organizational and student interest.

The Ed.L.D. Program has partnered with organizations that are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in American preK–12 education. The partners are school systems, nonprofit organizations, mission-based for-profit organizations, and government agencies, all pursuing a common goal of ensuring that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. You will work directly with partner organizations in the third-year residency and have some exposure to partner representatives in the first two years of the program. Your work with our partner organizations will be encapsulated in a Capstone, which is descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of the your leadership and contributions to a strategic project. Northeastern University’s online Doctor of Education program provides experienced adult learners, working professionals, and scholar-practitioners from diverse backgrounds and perspectives with the practical knowledge and experience they need to transform the learning landscape. Students gain innovative approaches to create authentic change in their communities. The program was selected as the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate's Program of the Year for 2022-2023.

The Doctor of Education program is designed to be completed in three to four years of study—following a fast-paced quarter system in lieu of a traditional semester format. Students choose from five concentrations to create a curriculum that matches personal and professional interests. The program's dissertation in practice process will begin at the onset of your coursework as you identify your problem of practice and develop an action plan—incorporating cycles of data collection and analysis, collaboration, change work, and reflection—culminating in the dissemination of your action research findings. Our students come from diverse disciplines and professions, seeking more than just a degree. You'll gain a practical education that translates to your everyday working environment.

While all EdD courses can be completed online (except for hybrid courses in Seattle and Charlotte), annual in-person two-day residencies are held on campus. Residencies focus on networking and tools for career success and allow you to connect with faculty and fellow scholars to share knowledge and experience. You'll attend residencies* in your first and second years of the program at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.

• Innovative Teaching and Learning: The innovative teaching and learning concentration focuses on transforming education through innovation, justice, and policy, by providing engaging opportunities for current and aspiring teaching and learning specialists working in various education spaces. The concentration focuses on teaching and learning both inside and outside the bounds of P-20 schools and focuses on developing and leading innovative curricula as well as professional development.
• Transformative School Leadership: The transformative school leadership concentration provides innovative opportunities for experienced education professionals who are current and aspiring leaders of early childhood centers, public or private schools, or school districts. The concentration prepares students to lead and transform educational spaces and be equipped to shape the needs of education in K-12, higher education, organizational contexts, and beyond.
• Workplace Learning: The workplace learning concentration helps professionals gain a deeper understanding of, recognize, and influence real-life social inequalities faced by marginalized populations in the workplace. Courses allow students to advance their professional practice by developing and deepening their knowledge of workplace learning, organizational dynamics, learning strategy, and ethics.
• Integrative Studies: The integrative studies concentration provides an opportunity for students to design a program of study that fits their own professional goals and includes the required foundation and research courses, concentration courses from any EdD concentration, and electives from the Doctor of Education or Doctor of Law and Policy programs.

To earn your online doctorate in education, you must complete coursework consisting of four components: core courses, concentration courses, research methods courses and the dissertation in practice. 

The dissertation in practice is a doctoral dissertation with a more practical focus than a traditional dissertation. Under the guidance of faculty in your concentration, you will apply relevant research methods to tackle a problem of practice that impedes access to equitable educational opportunities and outcomes.

The purpose of the dissertation in practice is to equip students earning their online EdD with the knowledge and skills to address existing problems in the workplace well beyond your completion of the program.

This course provides an overview of the theoretical framework for the practice of leadership in organizations leading to the application of theory and best practices in your educational leadership practice. We will also focus on specific leadership topics such as strategic leadership, systems thinking, team leadership, change management and developing others. We will move back and forth between theory and practice and include opportunities for self-reflection and skill development. (3 credits)

A focus on issues and practical applications of ethical principles of leadership, which includes a review of philosophical foundations as context for consideration of ethical issues and dilemmas. Towards this end, this course will evaluate the concept of justice in organizations, and the changing demographics of our society, especially related to race and culture, gender, age, disability and socio-economic status. Emphasis will be placed on effective organizational management of diversity for social justice outcomes. (3 credits)

The ability to transform and adapt as leaders to meet the demand of an ever-changing working environment is crucial. Continual growth and personal development are imperative for leaders to be successful in our complex global economy. This course facilitates the development of self, organization and community through enactment of adult learning theory as it relates to transformational leadership values. The scope of study includes analysis of transformational leadership theory and the development and implementation of leadership and change projects. (3 credits)

This writing intensive course covers the foundations of enacting leadership content gained thus far for the purpose of locating, developing, analyzing, synthesizing and constructing a sound literature review consistent with the research on the student’s chosen research topic. The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the practice of research and research design. This course provides students with opportunities to develop skills that are essential for conducting research and completing a research project with a particular focus on reviewing literature and composing a literature review paper. Students will demonstrate the ability to differentiate among alternative research viewpoints, differentiate constituent parts of the review, assess and comment on theories, thoughts, and ideas, concept proposals and relevant literature, and construct a cogent and compelling literature review. A Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education are both terminal degrees that offer ample opportunities for leadership, learning and research. The main difference between an Ed.D. and a Ph.D. is in professional pursuits after graduation. An Ed.D. has practical applications that may go outside of academia. A Ph.D. has a more scholarly concentration which, more often than not, culminates in research-based studies.

About the program.

The Doctor of Education Degree program in Educational Leadership is designed to enhance the experienced school administrator’s leadership skills through: (1) advanced preparation that strengthens decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills essential to the management of increasingly complex educational organizations, and (2) engagement in guided field research that develops the inquiry skills necessary for effective leadership and management practice.

The program uses an inquiry approach that employs problem-solving and research skills applicable to multiple problems and issues. The purpose is to generate an inquiry orientation so that participants will learn to solve problems from broad perspectives. Participants identify, diagnose, and define problems, analyze their component parts contextually and systematically, and develop solutions that are immediately applicable and that deal with underlying issues. Experiences over the course of the doctoral program in Educational Leadership become candidate-led, field-based investigations of educational problems and potential solutions.

• For admission to Stage I, candidates must possess a master’s degree. For admission to Stage II, candidates must possess a terminal degree in a related field.

• Present a minimum grade point average of 3.25 (4.0 scale) in previous graduate work.

The Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) prepares experienced educators to become the transformational preK–12 leaders that the country needs — passionate about educational quality and equity, well versed in learning and development, and knowledgeable about public policy and organizational management, so they can translate visionary ideas into real-world success. Graduates of the three-year, multidisciplinary Ed.L.D. — taught by faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School — are uniquely prepared for system-level leadership positions in schools, nonprofits, mission-driven for-profits, and state and federal departments of education.

The Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, in the Educational Leadership & Policy   (EDLP) unit, is designed to advance knowledge and address enduring and future problems in education by:

• Exploring issues of social justice for educational equity and opportunity,
• Engaging in research situated in socio-cultural, economic, and political contexts,
• Addressing the significance of changing and challenging educational contexts.

Students in our Ed.D. program will gain the leadership skills and research background to challenge unjust systems and promote continuous educational improvement in their organizations. Students continue to work as full-time practitioners while they study and apply new knowledge to their day-to-day practice. Our program is centered around the Dissertation in Practice, in which students work to address persistent challenges within their current educational organizations.  

Our Ed.D. program is a member of the prestigious Carnegie Project on the Educational Doctorate ( CPED ), the nation’s leading organization focused on the Doctorate of Education.

Professionals who aspire to leadership roles may find themselves wondering if further education beyond a master’s degree could advance their careers. Higher Education Leadership

From Deans of colleges to the Chief Academic Officer role at a university, doctorate of education leadership graduates may choose to pursue higher education leadership positions. For example, Deans oversee areas of a college or university such as academics or students. Deans tend to be responsible for implementing policies, measuring progress and managing staff.

Deans are considered Postsecondary Education Administrators by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS lists a median salary of $96,910 for Postsecondary Education Administrators. These roles are expected to grow by 7 percent between 2021 and 2031.

Another example is a Chief Academic Officer, also referred to as a Provost, Vice President and Vice Chancellor. These professionals are responsible for oversight of a college or university’s educational programming, which includes curriculum, instruction, academic standards and pedagogy. They design and implement academic strategies and oversee course development and quality assessment as well as staff and budgets. Their responsibilities include creating and implementing training plans, designing and delivering development programs and assessing the learning needs within an organization. These professionals also analyze the programs they implement to determine if the learning culture in the organization is succeeding, if learning goals are being met and how educational programs within the organization can improve.

Training and Development Manager

Working in nearly every industry, Training and Development Managers typically manage a staff of training and development specialists. These professionals are also responsible for creating and managing training budgets as well as designing and executing training programs. Education Administrator

Education Administrator roles include elementary, middle and high school Principals as well as Postsecondary Education Administrators such as Academic Deans and Chief Student Affairs Officers at colleges or universities. Elementary, middle and high school Principals are responsible for managing school operations, staff and activities. They oversee curriculum, schedules and budgets, assess and train Teachers and meet with students, Teachers and parents in pursuit of student success. Principals also often serve as the public face of the school in the community.

The BLS lists a median salary of $98,420 for elementary, middle and high school Principals. Roles for these professionals are expected to grow by 5 percent between 2021 and 2031.

Postsecondary Education Administrators may work in a department of a college or university, such as admissions, registration, or student services. Their roles vary depending on the department but tend to include overseeing staff and programs. Admissions Administrators may be responsible for determining the size of an incoming class, meeting with prospective students and reviewing applications and student data. Student Affairs Administrators, on the other hand, may lead a team of advisors to students, manage parent communication and oversee nonacademic programs for students.

The BLS lists a median salary of $96,910 for postsecondary education administrators. These roles are expected to grow by 7 percent between 2021 and 2031.

Social and Community Service Manager

Social and Community Service Managers work for a wide range of organizations focused on cultivating public well-being. They may work in organizations that support a specific population, such as unhoused citizens, people with mental health needs, or under-resourced children. Social and Community Service Managers may be responsible for overseeing the operations, staff and programs of a social organization. They foster relationships with community members, stakeholders and potential funders to design and implement programs and services that meet the needs of the demographic the organization serves. In a larger agency or organization, a Social and Community Service Manager may have a specialized role such as running a specific program offered by the organization.

The typical entry-level education for Social and Community Service Managers is a bachelor’s degree. However, earning a doctorate in educational leadership may provide greater opportunities for advancement in the profession.

The BLS lists a median annual salary of $74,000 per year for Social and Community Service Managers. Roles for these professionals are projected to grow by 12 percent between 2021 and 2031, which is much faster than the average rate for all occupations.

Superintendent

Superintendents are responsible for the oversight of all schools within their district. Their goal is to increase student success. Superintendents develop strategies and programs for improving educational performance within their district. They evaluate educational programs, services and facilities, as well as designing and approving academic plans and programs. Superintendents often work closely with Principals in their districts to improve student outcomes within their schools. They tend to have a significant role in the community and public life.

While a doctoral degree is not a prerequisite for becoming a Superintendent, AASA, The School Superintendents Association, reports that 42 percent of Superintendents have earned a doctorate. The report also states that Superintendents with an EdD earned high median salaries. For example, they found that the median annual salary for a Superintendent with a master’s degree was $137,500. Superintendents with an EdD, however, earned a median annual salary of $169,950. While the BLS does not specifically report on Superintendents, Zippia projects 4 percent growth in superintendent roles between 2018 and 2028.

Professors, also referred to as Postsecondary Teachers or Faculty, educate students beyond the high school level. Employed by community colleges, four-year colleges and universities, Professors specialize and teach in a specific subject area. They are responsible for designing instructional plans, planning lessons and assignments and teaching students. Professors assess and evaluate students’ progress and advise students. They may also be responsible for conducting ongoing research in their profession and contributing to the literature in their area of expertise.

Most postsecondary teaching roles require a doctoral degree. The BLS lists a median annual salary of $79,640 for postsecondary teachers. Roles for these professionals are projected to increase by 12 percent between 2021 and 2031, which is much faster than the average projected growth rate for all occupations.

Uog doctoral program set to launch in fall 2024.

The University of Guam announces that it has received approval from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)   to begin offering its first ever online doctoral program — a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Instructional and Academic Leadership.

The new EdD program emphasizes development of the “scholar-practitioner” who will integrate their professional experiences with research and theory to improve educational practices within their cultural contexts and to influence change in their educational and organizational settings.

“UOG was founded as a teaching college in 1952 and has since developed tremendous capacity for teachers, counselors, and school administrators for our island and region,” said Anita Borja Enriquez, UOG President. "This new doctoral program is our commitment to advancing education, elevating the focus on research agendas relevant to our region, and addressing improvement to instructional areas and overall educational leadership."

School of Education Dean Alicia Aguon noted that the new doctorate responds to the needs of educators and school systems across the region.

“Our survey had nearly a thousand respondents including alumni, education professionals, and stakeholders throughout Micronesia, and overwhelmingly, there was a stated need for a program geared toward instructional and academic leadership,” said Aguon. “This doctoral program is groundbreaking as it has been developed with a cultural competency unique to our region.”

The School of Education will begin accepting applications to the doctoral program this summer with its first courses starting this October. UOG will release more details in the coming weeks about information sessions and the application timeline.

“This isn’t just a milestone for UOG, it’s a milestone for education across the region,” said Enriquez “I am thrilled to see the meaningful, diverse conversational and collaborative synergies unfold from our inaugural cohort.”

Overview of the Doctor of Education (EdD) in Instructional and Academic Leadership

• The EdD program is an online program with 20 required courses and a total of 60 credit hours.
• The dissertation is built in as coursework in the program of study.
• The program is expected to take four years to complete without pausing. 
• The UOG Board of Regents approved the program in June 2023 and the WASC Senior College and University Commission approved the program in March 2024.
• Up to 25 students are projected for the program’s inaugural cohort.
• The program will launch in Fanuchånan (Fall) 2024.
