How to Present Your Career Journey on PowerPoint

Want to present your career journey as an interesting story through a presentation? Find out how to do it using PowerPoint.

Talking about your career journey is a nerve-wracking exercise, whether in an interview or presenting to a large audience. You can make this process much more exciting by narrating your journey as a story.

A story that contains facts, figures, anecdotes, and more stories to illustrate your knowledge, experience, expertise, conflict resolution techniques, and insights. Here's how you can harness the power of PowerPoint to present your career journey as an interesting story:

1. Ask the Right Questions

Before you begin creating your presentation, you need to have a good idea about the content you will include in it. You can write down bullet points that act as the deck outline, or ask yourself pertinent questions. What kind of questions should you ask yourself? Here's a list to get you started:

  • Who's my target audience; recruitment teams, college/school students, job fair attendees, or working professionals?
  • What do I aim to achieve with this presentation?
  • What professional events, stories, incidents, and insights should I include?
  • What statistics, tips, and professional highlights should I mention?

Your presentation can go in widely different directions based on your answers.

2. Draw a Content Flow Chart

Now that you have a good idea about what to include, it's time to organize this information into a seamlessly flowing story. Draw a flowchart or a simple diagram to indicate what goes where. This is the storyboarding stage, where you'll order the content and fine-tune the details to the last fact and figure.

3. Choose Content Format and Media

Once you're done with the “what” and “where,” it's time to address the “how.” How do I present my career story as concisely as possible? Not every part of your journey needs a slide with elaborate textual content. You can use graphs and timelines to depict career trajectories and time spent in different roles. Use bolded numbers with labels or SmartArt and Charts to highlight critical statistics.

A short video can explain your work methodology with animations and voiceover. Concept images, tag clouds, and simple sketches can convey information more concisely than a slide full of text. Once you've decided how each part in the flowchart will take shape on the slides and have the media content ready, it's time to launch the PowerPoint app.

4. Pick the Right Template to Tell Your Story

Searching for story-based templates brings up lots of options on PowerPoint that have different slides to highlight stats, show graphs, depict growth, insert a video, etc.

You can insert your information in the appropriate slides, clone the ones that need repetition, delete the ones that don't fit in with your story, and insert slides from other presentation decks that cater to your requirements. Just make sure to edit the theme of this slide to match the main template.

Using a premade template to prepare a professional presentation . You'll not have to waste time deciding on fonts, colors, themes, and manually inserting diagrams and charts. You can also download or buy presentation templates from online resources like Crystal Graphics or SlideUpLift . These sites offer custom templates to showcase career journeys, with creative slides to present information concisely.

You can also use the Slide Master feature in PowerPoint to create a custom theme for your presentation.

5. Design Your PowerPoint Presentation

It's time to execute your vision. Use as many slides as you need without worrying about the length of the presentation. Here are a few quick PowerPoint tips to help you present your career journey in a stellar way:

  • Use high-quality images, videos, and graphics.
  • Use Animations and Transitions sparingly.
  • Use Presented View mode to check how your slides look, keep an eye on your notes, and edit as needed.

6. Polish Your Stories

Your career journey would be incomplete without highlighting your professional growth and maturity, lessons learned, and insights gained. Use the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Results to avoid rambling and keep it short and straightforward.

When narrating stories, describe the situation or conflict you were facing, what needed to be done, what was done, what you learned from the experience, and how it has impacted your decision-making process. The STAR method touches upon all the crucial details of a learning incident, allowing you to tell more stories in fewer words.

7. Edit Your Slides

Now you need to step into the shoes of your target audience. Look at every slide critically. Think about the value each slide adds to the rest of the presentation, and decide whether it stays or goes.

Are all your stories helpful and needed? Are your statistics factually accurate? How long will it take for you to walk through the entire set? Use these and other relevant questions as markers to cut down the number of slides.

8. Deliver With Poise

Making a kick-ass presentation is just one part of depicting your career journey. The other part consists of being a good storyteller. Use the PowerPoint Speaker Coach to improve your presentation skills . Memorize your notes, pay attention to your hand gestures, make eye contact, and do not read from the slides. Practice with a timer until you can deliver it in the precise amount of time you've been allocated to present.

Present Your Career Journey With Aplomb

Look for Behavioral Interview related questions online and how to ace them before you sit down to create your career journey presentation.

It will help you channel your nervous energy into telling a good story accompanied by a presentation. Learn more about creating engaging presentations on PowerPoint to improve your story.

A career path is a sequence of jobs that leads to your short- and long-term career goals. Some follow a linear career path within one field, while others change fields periodically to achieve career or personal goals.

A career path is a series of jobs that help you progress towards your goals and objectives. Your career path includes the jobs you will need to hit your ultimate career goal, but it does not need to follow a straight line. There is no blueprint or timetable for climbing the career ladder.

Career paths traditionally imply vertical growth or advancement to higher-level positions, but they can also include lateral movement within or across industries.  Changing jobs is expected, and sometimes those changes will involve different types of positions in various industries. Some career paths have a few ups and downs and some people even plan a move down the career ladder.

You might move down the career ladder by asking your company for a transfer to a position with fewer responsibilities and less stress. Or you might apply for a position with a company that you are passionate about working with, but the only available positions are lower level ones.

Career paths typically refer to either your path through an industry or your path through an organization. For example, if your goal is to become a principal, you would typically start as a teacher and work on your administrative credentials while teaching. If you are in a large district, you might chart a path within your district. You might become a department head and then advance to a position as an assistant principal.

If you are in a smaller district, you might need to move to a different organization to advance your goals. In that case, your advancing within your profession, but moving to another organization.

This template will be useful to all employees who want to plan their career development. You can make a detailed plan of action to achieve your goal. For example, you can specify what positions you need to take or what skills you need to improve in order to become a commercial director.

This template can also be used by HR managers when preparing information for potential candidates about career opportunities in the company. You can also use the slides from this template when preparing information about the outstanding achievements of company employees.

University professors can use the slides from this template when preparing a career development course in a company or strategic career planning. Also, this template can be used by university graduates to plan a high-paying and prestigious job in the coming years.

Career Timeline is a professional and modern template that contains four stylish and fully editable slides. You can independently change the size and type of fonts, position and size of infographics according to your corporate requirements. This template will be useful for students, teachers, HR managers. Career Timeline Template will be a worthy addition to your collection of professional presentations.

Top 10 Career Roadmap Templates with Samples and Examples

Deepika Dhaka

There is a high probability of a low-probability event coming through and spoiling your party. This happens the moment you think, “Now, we are all prepared. I can afford some rest.” This has been the theme of global human life over the past three-four years.

The Covid-19 pandemic, followed by the Russia-Ukraine war and the furor over climate change, has meant that businesses increasingly find the external environment to be a bit of a minefield.

For you and me, this translates into worries over career and job security. The headlines only serve to accentuate this uncertainty. Even technology giants like Apple, Meta, Twitter, and Amazon are not in a sweet spot. Sample these recent banner headlines:

  • Meta to cut more than 11,000 jobs in one of the biggest US layoffs this year
  • Twitter lays off 50% of its global workforce
  • Silicon Valley sees around 45,000 layoffs as of October 2022

The US is likely to hit a recession, and central banks across the globe are stocking up on economic worries. For people like us, again, the question remains, how do you insulate your career against an uncertain future? How do you move on and ensure your career priorities shape up exactly as you wanted?

The key is to focus on what you can control and turn your anxiety into action. The best way to do this is to design a workable career roadmap to mitigate the sufferings of losing a job.

Having a practical career roadmap in hand will lend you the strength to stay stable in these volatile times. Better still, if you are ready to take advantage of uncertain times to sharpen your long-term career plans, we have the ultimate resource to assist you, Career Roadmap Templates

FAQs on Career Roadmap

How to make a career roadmap.

Start with a simple framework and branch out if needed. Keep your timeline and other responsibilities in mind as you create your career roadmap.

  • Define your starting point.
  • Define your career goal and its requirements
  • Add steps to connect your roadmap’s beginning with ending
  • Make your career roadmap engaging and easy to access
  • Keep your career roadmap updated.

Why should organizations create career paths?

Designing career paths help companies in:

  • Retaining best employees
  • Giving employees a sense of purpose
  • Attracting top achievers
  • Increasing the cumulative ability, experience, and diversity in the workforce
  • Creating an employee-centric culture
  • Compete better with other employers in the market, as poaching attempts are unlikely to succeed.

Why is a career development roadmap important for individuals?

The career planning process makes individuals aware of career opportunities. It also assists you in selecting the right profession and setting your priorities right. A well-defined career development plan will help you to take charge of your own professional advancement. Over time, there are only two things that really keep a career going, the professional network you build up. Second, your work ethic and sense of responsibility. There is always a time when you are at a crossroads, and motivation will flag. At that time, the career roadmap clarifies the way forward. Be sure to prepare or download a world-class one and consult it often.

Sales. Believe it or not, most of us are in the sales business.

Courtroom attorneys, both prosecutors and defense lawyers, are in the sales business. Their product consists of arguments for or against the defendant.

University professors are in the sales business. Their products are knowledge and thinking skills.

Consultants and corporate trainers are in the sales business. Their products are competence and proficiency with everything from how to lead a team to how to operate a complicated machine.

Whatever your job is, you can be sure that it involves sales—persuading people to adopt fresh perspectives, embrace new methods, rally around a common cause.

In all of this, Terri L. Sjodin is worthy of attention. An expert in advancing the persuasive presentation skills of professionals, Sjodin is a New York Times bestselling author ( Small Message, Big Impact ), and a respected researcher. For her latest book ( Presentation Ready: Improve Your Sales Presentation Outcomes & Avoid the Twelve Most Common Mistakes ), she conducted a multi-year study drawing on the experiences and observations of more than 5,000 business and sales professionals. Her expertise has been featured by many media outlets including the Today Show, Bloomberg News, CNN, CNBC, and Fox Business, as well as many industry podcasts.

Quoting the philosopher Seneca as saying, “Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity,” Sjodin explains how that view applied to the research she conducted during the Covid pandemic.

“ We used the lockdown to our advantage and captured data that has revealed insights unique to presenting during that challenging time,” she says. “We learned more about how to navigate specific obstacles in virtual presentations.”

WWE Raw Results Winners And Grades On May 13 2024

Samsung’s new feature boost releases to more galaxy phones, the risk of losing big on gamestop and other meme stocks.

A lot of professionals were great at in-person customer interactions but had to adapt to virtual presentations via video platforms when the pandemic hit. What were the biggest challenges of that transition?

“Ultimately, virtual meetings can’t provide all the benefits of face-to-face meetings, but they are scalable and can save you and your prospects time and money,” Sjodin says. “Some people simply feel awkward and uncomfortable using this technology. A common confession is, ‘I’ve been presenting for years. Why is this so difficult?’ The reason it’s daunting is because we are merging the art of presenting, the science of selling, and the modern tools of technology. It’s a lot to juggle all at once.”

Sjodin says that for some people, learning to master this technology is a lot like learning to drive a stick-shift automobile after years of driving with an automatic transmission.

When people are preparing for important presentations, what questions should they be asking themselves to ensure that their message and delivery are effective?

Terri L. Sjodin

“The best game plan is to do your homework early in the process, while keeping the end goal in mind,” Sjodin says. “Preparation is the best way to avoid ‘winging it.’ That might seem obvious. The truth is that many people, for various reasons, simply fail to prepare or don’t have a strategy to prepare effectively.”

Consider a meeting you have on your calendar right now and ask yourself a few key questions. What is my intention for this meeting? What am I trying to accomplish? Who are the listeners? What’s the audience size?

In the information-persuasion balance, what seems to be the key to driving a presentation to a prospect’s decision or conversion?

Sjodin says being overly informative was one of the highest ranked mistakes self-identified in her research study. “Information in and of itself doesn’t drive conversion,” she says. “The key is to get clear on the goal of being persuasive. What do you want to have happen as a result of this meeting or presentation?”

By design, a persuasive presentation has a specific intention. The speaker wants the listeners to act based on what they’re hearing. Sjodin suggests asking yourself this question: “Did I build a compelling case for my message?” She says professionals in need of results are best served when they craft presentations that are both persuasive and informative. “This seems simple, but, trust me, nobody complains that a talk was overly persuasive. They complain about the data dump.”

A challenge many speakers face is how to establish their own credibility without distracting from the product service, or cause they are championing. Sjodin has some suggestions on how to address that challenge.

“When a presentation is filled with vague assertions and imprecise data, speakers lose credibility,” she says. “Credibility is essential. Without it, a prospect has little reason to buy into your proposal.”

Her research results showed that sales professionals who committed the mistake of providing inadequate support consistently failed to establish credibility with the listener through their personal experience or data quality.

“A potential customer will evaluate you and your information before deciding whether to believe you,” she says. “Personal credibility speaks to your experience, education, background, industry knowledge, and field work. If you are new to an industry, it’s tough to sell your experience. Your chances are better if you sell your work ethic and scrappy mindset instead of your ability to advise listeners on how to do something they have been doing for the past 20 years.”

In her research, Sjodin found that many sales professionals confessed that they “conclude but do not close.” Where’s the disconnect? What’s her advice to them?

“ The close is the specific call to action you want your listener to take after hearing your message,” she says. “A conclusion is a wrap-up of what you just said. Some people avoid closing altogether because they don’t want to risk hearing ‘no thanks, not interested.’ The fear of rejection makes closing feel uncomfortable, so they just skip it altogether.

Closing doesn’t need to be scary, she says. “All you are doing is inviting your listener to choose to move forward in some regard.

Delivering a persuasive presentation requires the ability to close. “Persuasive presenters are always prepared to ask for a next step, or commitment—it’s what they’re there to do,” she says. “If you have met with numerous prospects but haven’t completed many transactions, ask yourself, ‘Do I close, or do I conclude?’ One generates action; the other gives your prospect the option of doing nothing.”

What’s the role of storytelling in making a compelling sales presentation, and what’s the key to doing it well?

It’s Sjodin says it’s the presenter’s responsibility to build and deliver an interesting message. You might think your data is interesting, but that doesn’t mean the audience will. This is where storytelling plays a role.

“Boring presentations are unfortunately a common occurrence,” she says. “Multiple factors can contribute to a dull, tedious, and tiresome talk, including low presenter energy, an overall lack of creativity, and an absence of storytelling and other entertaining elements.”

Sjodin says the key to effective storytelling is to put yourself in the seat of a skeptical listener and ask whether your message is intriguing and thought-provoking. “If a small, persistent voice tells you that it’s boring, it probably is. Can you find a story that could bring this issue to life in a more dazzling way?”

Death-by-PowerPoint still seems to be a common mistake made by speakers and presenters. Sjodin offers advice on using visual aids effectively.

“Visual aids can significantly enhance a presentation when used effectively,” she says. “They are not designed to be a crutch to help get a person through their content. Remember, you are the star, and the visual aids are the bit players. They are there to enrich the message and say something visually that you can’t communicate in the same way verbally. Tragically, most presentations are dominated by text and bullet points and do not visually create a wow factor.”

Does making a sales presentation mistake matter?

“In today’s competitive market, everybody sells something, whether it’s a product, a service, a cause or even when selling themselves on a job interview or for a promotion,” Sjodin says. “One of the most surprising initial insights in the research study was that 92% of participants reported feeling that making a sales presentation mistake has or probably has impacted moving a transaction forward or achieving their goal. That is a big number! So does it matter? The research results say yes!”

Opinion: Salt Lake City School District’s restroom presentation harms students. As nonbinary and transgender educators, we see the damage.

The directive to give presentations in every single classroom created widespread harm and put educators in precarious positions to balance their “professionalism” with their humanity..

(Rick Bowmer | AP) Bonneville Elementary School 5th grader Graham Beeton, waves to fellow students during a block party supporting trans and non binary students and staff Monday, April 29, 2024, in Salt Lake City. Utah will become the latest state to implement restrictions for transgender people using school bathrooms and locker rooms in public schools and government-owned buildings when key components of a law passed by the Republican controlled Legislature take effect May 1.

On May 1, HB 257 went into effect in K-12 public schools. But for us, transgender and nonbinary educators in the Salt Lake City School District, the effect has been felt for weeks. We feel compelled to speak as private citizens, not as representatives of the district or the schools we work in, due to the impact on our queer and transgender community in Salt Lake City.

We chose to work in this district specifically because of its commitment to equity. Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) has a vision statement that reads “Excellence and Equity: every student, every classroom, every day” in addition to being the first “ Dignity District ” nationwide, with the commitment “to learning and work environments where everyone is treated with dignity.” Yet, SLCSD’s directive to have teachers give classroom presentations about HB 257 undermines its own commitment to dignity and equity, resulting in direct harm to transgender students, educators and their allies.

SLCSD created presentations for grades K-5 and 6-12 which stated that “new legislation requires us” to tell students they needed to use the bathroom of the gender they were assigned at birth. In the creation of these presentations , SLCSD failed to recognize the impact this would have on teachers, counselors, administrators and psychologists who were left with no support or resources to honor our own dignity. While the district’s recent newsletter stated that it would “remain committed to making sure our schools remain safe, welcoming places for all our students, families, and staff,” we were not provided with adequate means of support to do so.

Instead, we as transgender and nonbinary educators took on the labor to answer questions from coworkers on how to best support our students. With no district acknowledgment of the pain it caused us, transgender and nonbinary educators were also expected to give this presentation to our students, directly harming them and betraying our community when we know exactly what the implications are — 56% of transgender and nonbinary youth in Utah seriously considered suicide in 2022 . The district did not recognize this potential for harm in any communications to faculty, staff or families.

We took it upon ourselves to create our own presentations filled with local and national resources, support systems and hotlines, crafted for both secondary and elementary communities — the resources to help fellow educators support impacted students and families that our district should have created. We shared these with the educators we could within our reach. Subsequently, we watched as some of our students’ fiercest allies and our schools’ kindest hearts experienced the chilling effect of the presentation: Pride flags, safe school posters and pronoun pins were fearfully stowed away. We continue to question: How does this make our district safe and welcoming?

In secondary schools, regardless of their gender identity, students questioned why this was the action the district decided to take when their friends in other districts were not subject to the same trauma and harm. Several stated they would rather the district make a presentation about vaping, drug use and truancy in the bathrooms instead — and stop targeting their trans and nonbinary peers. At the elementary level, young trans and nonbinary students already struggle to get peers and teachers to acknowledge and understand their identities. Many aren’t even “out,” choosing to be accepted simply for who they are without a label that could subject them to interrogation. Coupling this reality with the introduction of HB 257 means we have students of all ages, K-12, who had their right to use the bathroom become subject to classroom discussion.

We recognize that SLCSD needs to ensure they comply with state law and the specific directives of HB 257. However, the directive to give presentations in every single classroom created widespread harm and put educators in precarious positions to balance their “professionalism” with their humanity. SLCSD did not provide justification for choosing to present the presentations over the methods other districts in our state used to notify students of HB 257.

We call for SLCSD to recognize the impact that it had on transgender, nonbinary and allied educators, students, staff and administrators. The effects of this erasure by the district were unnecessary, undignified and dehumanizing. The presentations did not give us reason to believe our district’s stated values and vision statement.

Additionally, we need actionable, tangible changes to create safe, equitable and dignified environments for everyone who works and learns in SLCSD. We ask the district to contract a professional development session on LGBTQIA+ inclusion, preferably through a local organization. We also ask that SLCSD conduct a thorough audit of their policies in the wake of new federal Title IX guidance which states that sex-separated programs and activities, including bathrooms, cannot exclude a person from a space consistent with their gender identity.

We have seen displays of love and support for transgender and nonbinary students and staff both in and out of our buildings and recognize its positive impact. We hope that SCLSD can join in these displays and that these actions will hopefully ensure that our district’s transgender and nonbinary community never feels this way again.

Click Here to download Application for the McGill DOM World Class Teams Process

This World Class Team process relates to a key objective from the DOM’s strategic plan-to become the most research-intensive DOM in Canada. The McGill DOM strives for excellence and we recognize that promoting growth in areas where we lead the world, or can lead the world, is/will be a key driver of reaching our strategic aspirations.

DOM World Class Teams are multi-disciplinary teams of scientists working in a specific “area” of focus, led by McGill DOM members. We are embarking on a process to identify our top 3 established world class teams and our top 3 emerging world class teams across the McGill DOM ecosystem. Established world class teams include multiple scientists collaborating and generating world leading outputs in an area. Emerging world class include multiple scientists collaborating in an area with clear and attainable plans to become world leaders.

Once we identify our world class teams, they will be given priority in areas under the DOM’s direct control such as fellowship support (salary and operating), recruitment (including future tenure slots, CAS Research start-up packages), etc. Successful teams will also benefit from DOMs advocacy for support from McGill, our affiliated institutions, and their affiliated Foundations.

To identify our teams, we will hold an open and transparent competition with written submissions and oral presentations by self-identified groups working in an “area” led by McGill DOM members. The submissions will articulate the structure (who), function (how), funding (with what), recent and upcoming outputs and the world comparable of their “world class team” in “area X” (i.e. identify/describe top 3 competitors in “area X”.). A 15-min presentation or “elevator pitch” to our DOM World Class Teams panel will be required as part of the process. The DOM World Class Teams panel will include the McGill FMHS Dean (or delegate), our affiliated Research Institute (RI) CSOs/CEOs (or delegates) and 3 external reviewers (senior, mid and early career).

The Department will open a call for applications every 4 years.

Application Deadline : January 15, 2024

Criteria for Application

  • Team must be led by a primary McGill DOM Faculty member and include a core of at least 2 other McGill DOM Faculty members. Important cross-McGill collaborations and external collaborations are a strength but the team must be led by a primary McGill DOM member.
  • Priority will be given to teams whose projects align with the McGill DOM strategic plan, McGill, affiliated hospital and affiliated RI priorities.
  • A team’s research can be in any area and in any form including bench to bedside to policy work and can include medical education and quality initiatives. However, it must be focused, “centres of excellence” in a medical specialty will not be considered (e.g. World-Class team in Hematology would not be considered but a World Class Team in Multiple Myeloma would be considered).

Submission/Presentation

Successful applications will be selected based on a written submission to our panel and a 15min “elevator pitch” presentation to panel at an open forum.
