Our land. Our future.

All over the world, ecosystems are threatened. From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point.

According to the  UN Convention to Combat Desertification , up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of  droughts  has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.

Land restoration is a key pillar of the  UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration  (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the  Sustainable Development Goals .

This is why  World Environment Day  2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”  We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land.

2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, from 2 to 13 December 2024.

#OnlyOneEarth Practical Guide

UNEP has published a practical guide outlining some of the collective, transformative actions that governments, cities, businesses, organizations and individuals can take to protect and restore our planet.

What is World Environment Day?

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. In 2024, it is hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Why take part?

Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

We need urgent action to address these pressing issues.

2020 has been referred to as a "Nature Super Year" and must be the year where we turn the tide on deforestation and forestry loss. Secretary-General's Message

A moment of truth for climate action

SG banner for World Environment Day

As climate records are shattered, and emissions continue to rise, the UN Secretary-General will set out some hard-hitting truths about the state of the climate, the grotesque risks leaders are taking, and what companies and countries – particularly the G7 and the G20 – need to do over the next eighteen months to salvage humanity’s chances of a livable future.

Essay on Understanding and Nurturing Our Environment

The environment is everything that surrounds us – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil beneath our feet, and the diverse flora and fauna that inhabit our planet. It's not just a backdrop to our lives; it's the very essence of our existence. In this essay, we'll explore the importance of our environment, the challenges it faces, and what we can do to ensure a sustainable and thriving world for generations to come.

Our environment is a complex and interconnected web of life. Every living organism, from the tiniest microbe to the largest mammal, plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. This delicate balance ensures the survival of species, including humans. For instance, bees pollinate plants, which produce the oxygen we breathe. Nature is a masterpiece that has evolved over millions of years, and we are just one small part of this intricate tapestry.

Importance of Environment

The environment is crucial for keeping living things healthy.

It helps balance ecosystems.

The environment provides everything necessary for humans, like food, shelter, and air.

It's also a source of natural beauty that is essential for our physical and mental health.

The Threats to Our Environment:

Unfortunately, our actions have disrupted this delicate balance. The rapid industrialization, deforestation, pollution, and over-exploitation of natural resources have led to severe environmental degradation. Climate change, driven by the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, is altering weather patterns, causing extreme events like floods, droughts, and storms. The loss of biodiversity is another alarming concern – species are disappearing at an unprecedented rate due to habitat destruction and pollution.

Impact of Human Activities on the Environment

Human activities like pollution, deforestation, and waste disposal are causing environmental problems like acid rain, climate change, and global warming. The environment has living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components. Biotic components include plants, animals, and microorganisms, while abiotic components include things like temperature, light, and soil.

In the living environment, there are producers (like plants), consumers (like animals), and decomposers (like bacteria). Producers use sunlight to make energy, forming the base of the food web. Consumers get their energy by eating other organisms, creating a chain of energy transfer. Decomposers break down waste and dead organisms, recycling nutrients in the soil.

The non-living environment includes climatic factors (like rain and temperature) and edaphic factors (like soil and minerals). Climatic factors affect the water cycle, while edaphic factors provide nutrients and a place for organisms to grow.

The environment includes everything from the air we breathe to the ecosystems we live in. It's crucial to keep it clean for a healthy life. All components of the environment are affected by its condition, so a clean environment is essential for a healthy ecosystem.

Sustainable Practices:

Adopting sustainable practices is a key step towards mitigating environmental degradation. This includes reducing our carbon footprint by using renewable energy, practicing responsible consumption, and minimizing waste. Conservation of natural resources, such as water and forests, is essential. Supporting local and global initiatives that aim to protect the environment, like reforestation projects and wildlife conservation efforts, can make a significant impact.

Education and Awareness:

Creating a sustainable future requires a collective effort, and education is a powerful tool in this regard. Raising awareness about environmental issues, the consequences of our actions, and the importance of conservation is crucial. Education empowers individuals to make informed choices and encourages sustainable practices at both personal and community levels.

Why is a Clean Environment Necessary?

To have a happy and thriving community and country, we really need a clean and safe environment. It's like the basic necessity for life on Earth. Let me break down why having a clean environment is so crucial.

First off, any living thing—whether it's plants, animals, or people—can't survive in a dirty environment. We all need a good and healthy place to live. When things get polluted, it messes up the balance of nature and can even cause diseases. If we keep using up our natural resources too quickly, life on Earth becomes a real struggle.

So, what's causing all this environmental trouble? Well, one big reason is that there are just so many people around, and we're using up a lot of stuff like land, food, water, air, and even fossil fuels and minerals. Cutting down a bunch of trees (we call it deforestation) is also a big problem because it messes up the whole ecosystem.

Then there's pollution—air, water, and soil pollution. It's like throwing a wrench into the gears of nature, making everything go wonky. And you've probably heard about things like the ozone layer getting thinner, global warming, weird weather, and glaciers melting. These are all signs that our environment is in trouble.

But don't worry, we can do things to make it better:

Plant more trees—they're like nature's superheroes, helping balance everything out.

Follow the 3 R's: Reuse stuff, reduce waste, and recycle. It's like giving our planet a high-five.

Ditch the plastic bags—they're not great for our landscapes.

Think about how many people there are and try to slow down the population growth.

By doing these things, we're basically giving our planet a little TLC (tender loving care), and that's how we can keep our environment clean and healthy for everyone.

Policy and Regulation:

Governments and institutions play a vital role in shaping environmental policies and regulations. Strong and enforceable laws are essential to curb activities that harm the environment. This includes regulations on emissions, waste disposal, and protection of natural habitats. International cooperation is also crucial to address global environmental challenges, as issues like climate change know no borders.

The Role of Technology:

Technology can be a double-edged sword in environmental conservation. While some technological advancements contribute to environmental degradation, others offer solutions. Innovative technologies in renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable agriculture can significantly reduce our impact on the environment. Embracing and investing in eco-friendly technologies is a step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Conclusion:

Our environment is not just a collection of trees, rivers, and animals; it's the foundation of our existence. Understanding the interconnectedness of all living things and recognizing our responsibility as stewards of the Earth is essential. By adopting sustainable practices, fostering education and awareness, implementing effective policies, and embracing eco-friendly technologies, we can work towards healing our planet. The choices we make today will determine the world we leave for future generations – a world that can either flourish in its natural beauty or struggle under the weight of environmental degradation. It's our collective responsibility to ensure that it's the former.

Deforestation is making the soil infertile (soil that provides nutrients and home to millions of organisms).

Over-consumption of natural resources.

Ozone depletion, global warming, and the greenhouse effect.

4. How do we Save Our Environment?

We must save our environment by maintaining a balanced and healthy ecosystem. We should plant more trees. We should reduce our consumption and reuse and recycle stuff. We should check on the increase in population. We should scarcely use our natural and precious resources. Industries and factories should take precautionary measures before dumping their wastes into the water bodies.

5. How can we protect Mother Earth?

Ways to save Mother Earth include planting more and more trees, using renewable sources of energy, reducing the wastage of water, saving electricity, reducing the use of plastic, conservation of non-renewable resources, conserving the different flora and faunas, taking steps to reduce pollution, etc.

6. What are some ways that humans impact their environment?

Humans have influenced the physical environment in many ways like overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation. Their responsibility towards the environment is certainly important because these social environments might support human beings in both personal development goals as well as career development goals.

Protect the environment, prevent pandemics, ‘nature is sending us a clear message’

On this year’s World Environment Day , celebrated on June 5, the UN is drawing links between the health of the planet, and human health, and highlighting the importance of protecting biodiversity, the system that supports life.

“At least 70 per cent of emerging infectious diseases” such as COVID-19 , are crossing from the wild, to people, and “transformative actions are urgently required to protect environment and human rights”. This was the message from David Boyd, the independent UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, ahead of this year’s Day.

Mr. Boyd added that countries should take urgent action to protect the environment and stop climate disruption, biodiversity loss, toxic pollution and diseases that jump from animals to humans.

Get the message

UN chief António Guterres said in his message that “nature is sending us a clear message. We are harming the natural world, to our own detriment.”

He noted that habitat degradation and biodiversity loss were accelerating, “climate disruption is getting worse…To care for humanity, we must care for nature.”

Time for natureSince World Environment Day was launched in 1974, it has grown to become the UN’s biggest annual event, advocating for environmental action and raising worldwide awareness of the need to increase protection for the planet’s long-term survival.

The 2020 edition, which has the tagline “Time for Nature”, is being hosted by Colombia, which is organizing several events, streamed live, which can be accessed here, or on social media. The theme is biodiversity protection, at a time when one million animal and plant species are believed to be on the brink of extinction.

This year’s Day inevitably references the global COVID-19 health crisis, noting that, with the population doubling over the past 50 years, and the global economy growing fourfold over the same period, the delicate balance of nature has been disrupted, creating ideal conditions for pathogens, such as COVID-19, to spread.

As countries open up, and governments approve stimulus packages to support job creation, poverty reduction, development and economic growth, the UN Environment Programme ( UNEP ), is urging them to “build back better”.

This involves capturing opportunities for green investment — such as renewable energy, smart housing, green public procurement, and public transport — guided by the principles and standards of sustainable production and consumption.

A failure to do so, warns UNEP, and an attempted return to business as usual, risks seeing inequalities rising even further, and a worsening of the degradation of the planet, at a time when one million animal and plant species are on the brink of extinction.

  • Always start your essay with a short introduction or an introductory paragraph, irrespective of the length.
  • Maintain good readability and avoid words and sentences that are too complex.
  • Keep your points straight.
  • In case of longer articles, make sure to maintain good continuity between your paragraphs.
  • Use appropriate subheadings and paragraph breaks whenever needed.

The format of simple sentence lists is the most preferred for lower primary classes. One can write such articles quite easily. Here is how you can write an essay for classes 1 and 2 on World Environment Day.

  • World Environment Day celebrations take place worldwide.
  • Over 140 countries are known to participate in this event actively.
  • The objective of this day is to promote and celebrate the conservation of our environment.

The environment is one of the most precious resources given to us by mother nature. With the increasing population, this valuable present is being subjected to severe harm caused by the human race. Multiple steps have been taken up by the concerned organisations to combat the same. One such endeavour which was taken up by the United Nations is World Environment Day. The 5th of June was officially declared to be observed as World Environment Day, and it was celebrated for the first time in the year 1974. The ultimate goal is to create awareness of the importance of conservation and protection of our environment.

As the classes progress, you will have to upgrade the complexity of the essays. When writing in long paragraphs and sections, you will have to include more facts as well. Here is a sample essay for the same.

The environment is a precious gift bestowed upon us by mother nature. This gift is being abused to a great degree, especially in recent days. It is important to understand the value of the environment and protect it. To bring about a sense of care and protection towards the environment, many renowned organisations worldwide have started taking up active measures to promote the general awareness of the public towards environmental conservation. One such initiative is the declaration of World Environment Day. The United Nations announced that this day would be celebrated on the 5th of June every year, starting from 1972. Promoting a sense of protection and care for the environment among people is its main purpose. Many institutions like schools, colleges, NGOs, and government organisations take up measures to contribute to the conservation of the environment, like planting saplings and more. It is the responsibility of every individual to participate in such activities regularly and actively.

As the classes progress further, the students are required to write more elaborate and detailed articles with multiple headings within, including several paragraphs. In this case, additional attention has to be given to the proper framing of subheadings and division of paragraphs. It is also important to maintain a good continuity between your sentences. Here is how you can write a good essay for class 3.

The environment has to be cherished and protected by every inhabitant on the planet earth. But, this has not been the case, especially in recent years, resulting in significant damage to the overall state of the environment. For the same reason, many renowned establishments and organisations around the world have started taking up measures to combat this. One such activity is World Environment Day, which is celebrated all over the globe on the 5th of June every year.

Essay On Earth Day

Every year on April 22, Earth Day is observed worldwide. This day was established to promote environmental safety and awareness. Earth Day was first observed by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. Nelson sparked multiple large-scale movements, protested, and mobilised the American public to begin caring for the environment. Here are a few sample essays on Earth Day.

Essay On Earth Day

100 Words Essay On Earth Day

World Earth Day is observed every year on April 22. The aim is to bring attention to the effects of ever-increasing global warming, openly debate about how it affects our daily lives and spread knowledge on the ways to prevent further harm from occurring, as well as undoing what has already been done. On this day, a number of important issues are discussed publicly, including climate change, increasing sea levels, ozone layer thinning, and indiscriminate deforestation. Numerous conferences, awareness campaigns, etc., are organised to commemorate this day. Some volunteers choose to plant trees on neighbouring property, while others prefer to clean the adjacent roads or rivers.

200 Words Essay On Earth Day

Several nations across the world celebrate World Earth Day. It's a day set aside to spread awareness and show appreciation for the Earth, our home planet.

First Earth Day Celebrations | Earth Day was first observed in the USA, and eventually it came to be celebrated worldwide. It is observed by more than 193 nations with a strong commitment to educating the populace. The inaugural Earth Day was commemorated on April 22, 1970. American Senator Gaylord Nelson recognised the necessity for this day in 1990, the first World Earth Day was officially recognised on a global level.

Meaning | Legend has it that the Sant Barbara oil leak in 1969 killed off zillions of aquatic species, including flora, and as a result, Earth Day was instituted. Earth Day is meant to remind people of the need to be more aware and appreciative of the planet's resources.

Activities Undertaken | Everyone is urged to switch off all unnecessary lights. Some volunteers go to neighbouring properties on this day to plant trees, while others clean the nearby waterways or roads. To promote open mindfulness, a number of experts team up to create banners, origami creations, or artistic pieces. It is our responsibility to restore the environmental harm we have wrought.

500 Words Essay On Earth Day

April 22 is recognised as World Earth Day to show support for the planet's health and promote public awareness of the problem. Over 190 nations have celebrated it since 1970. The signing of the Paris Agreement this year has increased the importance of World Earth Day. This agreement has been signed by about 120 countries, including the US and China, who promise to enact regulations that will reduce the release of ozone-depleting compounds into the atmosphere.

Issues Of Concern

World Earth Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness of the constantly growing global threat, freely discuss the catastrophic effects it has on our daily lives, and instruct everyone about how to prevent further damage and repair that has already been done. Environmental change, steadily rising ocean level, the depletion of the ozone layer, and ruthless deforestation are some predominant issues of discussion.

Establishing Earth Day

The need for an Earth Day began to be seen in the 1970s. It was then when people started becoming sensitive towards the planet and making some effort to protect it. The inaugural Earth Day celebration took place in 1970. There were millions of people involved. People protested and urged the government to safeguard the environment.

Gaylord Nelson’s Contribution

The key driving force for the Earth Day celebration was US Senator Gaylord Nelson. He demanded action in support of the environment alongside activists, students, environmentalists, and the general public. Additionally, he put a lot of effort into bringing the issue to a political level.

Senator Nelson was successful in his aim, and both the government and the general public enthusiastically supported the first Earth Day. Everyone who participated in the event—rich, poor, athletes, farmers, businesspeople, and others—made a commitment to preserve the planet earth.

Importance Of Earth Day

The only planet where life exists is Earth. It's special and the only location we have. It will put our very existence in peril if we can't keep it safe.

Numerous factors are necessary for life on Earth. For life to exist on Earth, there must be land, water, soil, forests, and air. But unregulated resource consumption, deforestation, pollution, climatic shifts, and other factors have seriously harmed the Earth's environment.

Earth Day serves as a reminder that sustainable living is necessary for ecological balance now more than ever. It serves as a reminder about how crucial it is to preserve ecosystems, nature, and other forms of life.

On Earth Day, we are reminded to act right away to stop the harmful effects of climate change.

How We Celebrated Earth Day In School

Last year, my school enthusiastically celebrated Earth Day. A special assembly was held wherein students presented their views about how the Earth could be protected and sustainable development be facilitated. Each class planted a sapling a promised to nurture it. Children also made posters around the theme “Earth Day” which were put up on the multiple display boards across the school. The activities helped students understand the importance of conserving the planet and also the ways to do so.

Essay on Environment

Essay on Environment is an excellent way for students to learn about the environment and its implications. The environment, in the simplest of terms, refers to the interaction between living organisms and non-living things. Living organisms are classified as biotic components, while non-living things form the abiotic components.

Humans are a part of the environment, but their activities are not, as they do not coincide with the natural environment. Hence, such environments are called artificial environments. As a general rule of thumb, any human interaction with the natural environment converts the same into an artificial environment.

Acts such as the installation of solar panels in a desert, construction of huts made of muds transform the natural environment into an artificial one. However, when animals build structural which support their living, they still are considered as natural.

The environment provides many resources, from medicine to food. Moreover, the environment is home to countless species of organisms, some of which are on the verge of extinction. Another factor accelerating the extinction of organisms is the destruction of their environments. Most organisms need their natural habitat to thrive. Without it, organisms may perish.

Anthropological activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, have brought severe repercussions. Increased levels of air pollution have led to many respiratory illnesses in humans. On a global scale, burning fossil fuels have pumped vast quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The immediate consequence of this is global temperatures will increase. As a result, ice caps will start to melt, and sea levels will rise. Natural calamities will strike with more intensity and frequency. If these activities are unchecked, then a phenomenon called Runaway greenhouse effect might occur. Though this scenario is “mostly” hypothetical, scientists say that such a phenomenon is responsible for Venus’s hellish atmosphere.

In Venezuela, a Suspicious Win for the Strongmen

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro stands in front of a crowd with his arms raised, wearing a shirt that resembles the Venezuelan flag.

By Michael Albertus

Mr. Albertus is a professor of political science at the University of Chicago.

In what appears to be a deeply unfair election riddled with irregularities, Venezuela’s authoritarian president, Nicolás Maduro, seems to have survived once again. The outcome, which is already facing challenges and unrest that could grow in the coming days, is not just a disappointment for the opposition and the millions of Venezuelans yearning for democratic change. The election was a crucial test of the durability of the new brand of authoritarianism gripping the Americas — and it has proved that the movement may not fade away anytime soon.

Across the Western Hemisphere, democracy is being snuffed out or seriously challenged. Over the past 20 years, Venezuela, Nicaragua and El Salvador have slid into dictatorships. In late 2022, Peru’s president sought to dissolve its legislature, although he landed in jail. Guatemala had a close call last year, with the attorney general’s office attempting to prevent a peaceful transition of power. And it remains to be seen whether Mexico’s recently elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, will continue the erosion of democratic checks and balances that her predecessor began.

It’s not a universally grim picture. Elsewhere — in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and the United States — democracy is succeeding. But it is being tested as the opposition to pluralism and inclusion grows and social unrest and dissatisfaction with the government spreads against a backdrop of stark inequality and institutional instability.

Venezuela’s election is a fulcrum moment for the Americas. Despite high turnout, there were numerous reports of voting irregularities, voter intimidation and problems at voting centers. Nevertheless, with 80 percent of the votes counted, the nation’s electoral council declared Mr. Maduro the winner with 51.2 percent of the vote compared with 44.2 percent for his main rival. Because officials at many voting centers refused to hand over paper copies of the vote tallies, the opposition had no concrete way to point to a different outcome.

If Mr. Maduro can ride out the postelection turmoil and remain in office another full term, it will be a green light to other budding autocrats in the region that they, too, can act with near impunity. Sham elections, human rights abuses and corruption could spread if there is not organized international pushback against them, while the voices of domestic constituencies are weakened by repression. The backsliding of democracy happened before: Many nascent democracies in Latin America collapsed during the Cold War only to be resurrected after its end.

So far, Mr. Maduro has done everything he can to cling to power. Before the election, his government barred the opposition’s most popular candidate from running for president, made it harder for millions of Venezuelans living abroad to vote and used state resources to dominate media coverage and run his campaign. He even tried to rebrand himself as more likable on social media to connect with voters who are too young to remember when Venezuela was a flourishing democracy.
