Rave is an app that syncs together streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. Here's how to use it.

What Is Rave?

Rave is a video stream syncing app that lets users chat through voice and text while watching.

Through Rave, you can start or join watch parties with content streamed from Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive, and more. While you will still need to have your account on paid streaming platforms, those that do not require subscriptions are free to watch in the app.

Additionally, Rave is a great way to share your subscription with friends who do not have accounts themselves. In fact, they may enjoy it so much that they will eventually subscribe. The interactive element also helps reduce the issues with syncing that often happen when trying to do it manually.

One of the unique things about Rave is its social networking aspect. Unlike its competitors, Rave lets you watch along with not just friends, but also strangers on public channels. With this, if your friends don’t like the same content as you, you can find new friends that do.

Rave also has a Rave DJ feature, which lets you generate original mashups and mixes using songs from YouTube and Spotify. After rendering, you can invite your friends to listen to them together.

Rave is free to download and is available on Mac, iPhone, Android, and Windows. However, if you’re not a big fan of ads, only Android users have the option to pay to remove them for $1.99.

How to Use Rave for Synced Viewing

Once you have downloaded the Rave app, open it on your device and log in using your Facebook, Twitter, or Google account. Next, you can set up the content that you want to watch. You can either join an existing rave hosted by another person or start your own.

If you want to join a public rave, simply select any that are available. The main channel is filled with ongoing streams that you can watch for free. Before joining, you can see the platform, content title, and the number of people streaming it. When joining a rave, only the person who started it can control it and adjust the settings.

To start your own rave, select the plus icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Choose from the list of streaming platforms. If the content is only available on a streaming platform with a subscription, you will need to log in to it first.

Then, you can invite your friends to use the app and add them by tapping the Menu Icon > Friends . Your friends need to download the Rave app on their individual devices before they can watch. Tap the link icon to send an SMS invitation or add friends who are already on Rave to join.

You can restrict the room’s privacy settings to your group's preference. Rave lets users decide whether they want the room to be accessible to the public, nearby Rave users, friends, or invite-only.

Once the room is ready, you can also use the chat box or microphone feature to start talking and chatting while watching. The Rave leader can also decide to limit the voice capabilities to everyone, themselves, or no one at all. Once your friends have joined the room, press play and enjoy the experience.

Is Rave Safe?

One of the key issues that users point out with Rave is that it does not let you create your own Rave account within the platform. Rave requires all users to link existing accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google using single sign-on.

If you are a privacy buff who likes to decentralize your data , it is understandable that you are against this. Linking all your online experiences to a single account puts you at higher risk in case of a security breach.

Additionally, while the app is available across platforms, Rave has not yet been approved in the Apple App Store for Mac. To use Rave on Mac, you will need to download it directly on their website. There is no way to tell for sure why it is not available, but this could signal that it has not yet passed the standards that Apple requires for safety.

Many users also don’t feel comfortable sharing subscription login information with Rave. There is already a large black market for Netflix account login details that make Rave a prime target for hacking.

While the reviews for Rave is generally positive, several users have reported critical security breaches on Rave. For example, users note how supposedly private rooms are hijacked by unknown people that play videos and change the privacy settings of the room without their consent.

Watch in Sync With Friends on the Go

Despite some negative reviews of Rave, it's an innovative app that offers something new for the streaming experience. Currently, there are no direct competitors that offer the same experience, especially for free.

However, it’s important to note that it’s not the most secure app, so weigh its pros and cons before use. If you’re not very particular with your security, there are plenty of users who attest that Rave generally does what it promises which is a stream syncing and conversation app.

Alternatively, if you’re not comfortable with the safety concerns over Rave, Netflix Party lets you experience something similar without needing to download a new app or give up your subscription login details.

Watch Disney+ movies and series with friends through Rave app

Rave will get the disney+ update on december 21.

Starting on December 21st, Disney+ customers can watch movies and TV shows with friends and family.

To do this, you’ll need to download the free Rave app for Android and iOS . Rave is a Waterloo, Ontario-developed app that helps users watch content together.

With the app, Disney+ subscribers can sign into their accounts and stream any series or movie in perfect sync, while texting or voice chatting with friends and family.

Disney+ costs $8.99 CAD/month or $89.99/year in Canada and is available on a variety of devices, including Android, iOS, the web, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Six streaming video options that let cord-cutters stream movies together

With much of the world hunkering down to limit the spread of COVID-19, many of us have more time than ever to work through our TV show watchlists.

But this can quickly become a lonely affair. As self-quarantines stretch on, we’ll need more ways to stay entertained at home while remaining in contact with friends and family members.

To that end, I’ve rounded up a list of “watch together” apps, websites, and extensions, which allow you to converse with other people while watching videos in sync with one another. Some let you communicate through text, and others through voice and video, but they all help fulfill the need to stay in touch with others even when you’re stuck at home.

Netflix Party

Netflix Party is a straightforward Chrome extension that adds a chat window to Netflix videos. After launching a video, you click the “NP” button in your browser’s toolbar to generate a shareable link, allowing others to watch and comment on the same video, with playback synchronized across all devices.

Bear in mind that everyone still has to sign into Netflix separately, as Netflix Party doesn’t let you share access to a single account. (There are, however, other tools for that .)

Scener is conceptually similar to Netflix Party, with a Chrome extension that synchronizes Netflix playback across devices, but it also allows for video chat at the same time.

The downside is that it’s more of a hassle to use. After installing the extension, you must create a Scener account, and after setting everything up, I ran into some bugs: Netflix refused to load any profiles except the default one, and emoji didn’t seem to work at all. Still, the video chat function works as advertised, with resizable chat bubbles that float over the video window.

While the above options require a laptop or desktop computer, the free Rave app lets you host and join viewing parties on either iOS or Android . Best of all, it works with a bunch of video sources, including Netflix, YouTube, Tubi, and Google Drive (for your personal video collection). The app can be a little clunky to navigate, but overall it works pretty well, and it allows for both text and audio chat. For the latter, there’s even an option for karaoke, though I can’t comment on how well the music and audio chat sync up.

Just make sure to set your viewing parties to “Friends” or “Private” if you don’t want random people joining.

AndChill.tv

If you want to host a group chat for YouTube videos instead of Netflix, give andchill.tv a try. Like Netflix Party, it adds group chat around a synchronized video player, but it uses a cute movie theater metaphor that changes the viewing angle on the video depending on which virtual “seat” you pick. You can also string multiple YouTube videos together to create a playlist.

The site supposedly offers audio chat as well, but I haven’t been able to get it to work.

Facebook Watch Party

Here’s another group chat option, this time for videos on Facebook . To start a group viewing session on your computer, hit the “…” button under the Create Post menu, then select “Watch Party.” You can also create a viewing session from your phone or tablet by tapping the “What’s on your mind?” field, then swiping up on the post options to reveal Watch Party near the bottom. After selecting some videos for your playlist, you can choose who’s allowed to see the party in their timelines, and you can push out invites once the video starts playing.

The host of the party can also stream video of themselves, but guests can only comment with text, emoji, or stickers.

For something a little different, check out Twitch . Although it’s best-known for live streams of people playing video games, it’s been branching out into other areas lately and has several channels with marathon-style TV streams. There are channels for Poker , classic Iron Chef episodes , round-the-clock food shows , classic shows from Shout! Factory TV , and Mystery Science Theater 3000 from Rifftrax . And of course, you can binge-watch The Joy of Painting with the late Bob Ross , in what started as a publicity stunt but has since become a Twitch staple . As with all other Twitch videos, these channels come with comment feeds, so you can chat with strangers or invite your friends.

Plain old video chat

Of course, you don’t need newfangled apps to watch TV with faraway friends. If all else fails, just fire up a group chat in Facetime or Google Duo , decide what to watch together, and make sure everyone presses play at the same time. You’ll just have to supply the chat emoji the old-fashioned way—with your face.

Tis the season for watching things with family and friends. As the holiday season rolls around, you may be craving the experience of gathering around a glowing screen to take in a cozy movie or festive TV show. But if you can’t see them in person, or they’re simply too far away, don’t worry. We live in an internet age full of options for almost every streaming platform available.

Once upon a time, the go-to movie-night-with-remote-friends option was Rabb.it, a video streaming website which let users either broadcast their own screens for others, or use the built-in virtual browser to log into one account. The service has since gone to the great internet beyond (press F to pay respects), but thankfully, successors to Rabb.it’s legacy exist — though with varying strengths and weaknesses, since none of them have that service’s exact screenshare technique. As more officially sanctioned watch-party options roll out, there really isn’t one that can do it all, but here are your options.

Teleparty : The app formerly known as Netflix Party

What does it support? Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, and HBO

Does everyone need to have their own accounts? Yes

How do I use it? Formerly known as Netflix Party, the Chrome extension recently expanded to include Disney Plus, Hulu, and HBO. Still, if you want to you can watch every single Netflix Christmas movie . After installing the Chrome extension, navigate to the streaming service of your choice and click on the extension in the corner. This will start a room, and from there, you send the link out. Teleparty supports a group-chat feature, though it doesn’t come with video. You can even pick your own little avatars. The capacity depends on the current status of the servers (so expect some limits during holiday season), but in ideal cases, you can fit up to a thousand people in this bad boy, if you even know that many people. Teleparty is available in every country Netflix is available in. However, before watching with international friends, be sure to check whether the title you’re watching is available in their countries.

Hulu Watch Party : The Official Hulu Choice

What does it support? Hulu — but only the Hulu (No Ads) and Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV tiers

Does everyone need to have their own Hulu accounts? Yes, and not only that, they all need to have the Hulu (No Ads) or Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV tiers

How do I use it? Hulu Watch Party is integrated right into Hulu, and can be activated by a little icon located on the details page of a title, towards the bottom of the screen. From there, click “Start Watching” and share the link using the chain icon. Not all titles have this option, but according to Hulu “thousands of on-demand movies and shows” are available. Titles not supported by Hulu Watch Party include live television and premium add-ons, like stuff from Starz. Up to eight people can watch Hulu together using Watch Party.

GroupWatch : The Official Disney Plus Choice

What does it support? Disney Plus

Does everyone need to have their own Disney Plus accounts? Yes

How do I use it? GroupWatch is part of the Disney Plus experience. Navigate to a title on Disney Plus and click the little GroupWatch icon, right next to the Start Watching button towards the lower portion of the screen. The next screen will prompt you to send out the invite link to up to six other people. Unlike the other options, GroupWatch does not have a chat feature. Instead, you use little emojis to react to key moments. Another downfall to GroupWatch is that it’s designed for users within the same country, and can’t be used internationally.

Prime Watch Party : The Official Amazon Prime Choice

What does it support? Prime Video

Does everyone need to have their own streaming accounts? Yes

How do I use it? Much like the other official options, this one is built right into the title itself. Navigate to a title on Prime Video and click the Watch Party icon, towards the bottom of the screen to the right of the Watch Now button. Enter your name and send out the invite link. The chatroom is on the side. You’ll also be able to watch on your Fire TV and chat on mobile by scanning a QR code, if you prefer that.

Kast : Experience the Vast Realm of Tubi

What does it support? Tubi and YouTube, though a premium account will allow you to screen share and give you access to Kast’s own library.

Does everyone need to have their own streaming accounts? No, but you’ll need to make a free account for Kast.

How do I use it? For whatever reason, various Rabb.it Chrome extensions are still up, but the links redirect to Kast. It’s not exactly the same, but Kast is pretty robust, even if the selection is limited to YouTube and Tubi on the basic plan. Simply make an account, launch a party, and browse the selection. You can then send invite links out. Kast also allows for video chatting and text-based messaging.

Scener : be the host you wish to see in the world

What does it support? Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, HBO Max, YouTube, Vimeo, Shudder, Alamo, Showtime, Hotstar, Hulu (ad-free), Funimation (ad-free)

Does everyone need to have their own streaming platform accounts? Yes

How do I use it? The bonus of Scener is that in addition to cozy private parties of up to 10 people, you can also use it for larger public viewings of up to a million — perfect if you want to try hosting Rocky Horror or Cats or any other movie that really benefits from a large participatory audience of loyal followers. Be the Elvira you’ve always dreamed of being!

To start a Scener room, you need to make your own account and download the Chrome extension. From there, navigate to the home page, where you’ll be prompted to create a public or private room. You can also schedule an event in advance.

Watch2Gether : For the audio inclined

What does it support? YouTube, Vimeo, and Twitch

Does everyone need to have their own streaming platform accounts? No, but mostly because it doesn’t really support streaming platforms.

How do I use it? If you want to listen to the next episode of your favorite podcast with friends, jam out to the same music, or just browse the same wikipedia holes together, Watch2Gether is for you. This one doesn’t require any fancy Chrome extensions (probably because it is the most limited in scope), but it works well for simple sharing. Just start up a room, load up a link, and share the room using the people icon on the bottom of the screen. The chat option is on the bottom right. You can also enable your camera for some live reactions.

TwoSeven : Filling out the Teleparty gaps

What does it support? YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, Vimeo, Apple TV, Crunchyroll, uploaded video (Hulu and Disney Plus with Patreon options)

How do I use it? Teleparty doesn’t cover every single streaming service out there, but TwoSeven picks up some of the big gaps like Crunchyroll.

To view anything where you need to log into an account (, you have to install an extension. You’ll also have to manually go into the Chrome extension’s settings to get it to work with Netflix specifically. Once that’s installed, you’ll be able to play your desired content right in the TwoSeven browser. Another perk of TwoSeven is that you can also upload files of movies that you’d like to watch; time to relive your high school iMovie files, like that music videos you made for a microeconomics class, about the Four Principles . (Not that I have one of those floating around or anything.) The best bonus of TwoSeven is that in addition to regular chat, it supports video and audio, so if you want to see a friendly face, it’s perfect.

Metastream : for a shared queue experience

What does it support? Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, SoundCloud, Twitch, Reddit, and Google (?)

How do I use it? This one’s especially good for the timeless party activity of loading up YouTube and watching old music videos and Vine compilations. Once the Chrome Extension (or Firefox) is installed, navigate to the Metastream window and add the media you want by clicking on the sidebar. It’s a little wonky for Netflix, which will pop up in a separate window, but everything else can be added by copying and pasting a link. If you’re having issues with Hulu or Crunchyroll, you’ll have to adjust some Chrome extension settings. (Details are in the Metastream FAQ .) A cool feature of Metastream is that you can queue up media, which really brings the whole “watching old internet videos together” experience to life.

Once you start up a session, click the invite icon to get a sharing link. From there, add media with the “add media” button at the center (or to the side if something is already playing). There is a chat, but no support for audio or video.
