How to Create a Moving Background for Engaging PowerPoint Presentations
Sara Wanasek
Create a spectacular Microsoft PowerPoint presentation by adding in a moving background. You can turn any video into a moving background, so get creative and use a video that will help students further understand and later recall your lesson!. There are many ways to create engaging PowerPoint presentations , and adding a moving background is a favorite trick!
Moving backgrounds in PowerPoint may seem intimidating, but it does not need to be left for PowerPoint pros! It can actually be done very easily. You only need some basic PowerPoint knowledge and have a video in mind to use. Then, you will have no issue incorporating a background that moves into your next presentation. Let’s get started! For a more visual walkthrough, watch the video at the bottom of the page!
How to Create a Moving Background in PowerPoint:
Step 1: add a video to your slide.
The first thing you will need to do to create your moving background is to go to the Insert tab in the PowerPoint ribbon and click on Video . Here, you have two choices: to upload a video from your device or to insert an online video .
When inserting an online video, paste the URL from any Youtube video. In this example, we will upload a video we already have from our device. Select the video from your files and click Insert .
Step 2: Resize & Move Video
Once the video has been placed on your slide, you can move and resize it. To create the moving background effect, move the video so that the top left corner aligns with the top left corner of the slide. Then, drag the bottom right corner of the video all the way to the bottom right corner of the slide. Your video should now take up your whole slide.
Step 3: Send Video to the Back
The next step here is to have this video be the background of your slide so that any text or images appear on top of the video. To do this, right-click on the video and select Send to Back. Now, you should see any objects on your slide appear on top of the video.
You can preview this in Presentation Mode to see if you like the way it looks. To edit the timing of the video, follow Step 4.
Step 4: Edit Playback & Format Options
After a quick preview of your video, you may want to make some formatting and playback changes. To do this, click on the Playback tab of the Video Tools tab in the PowerPoint ribbon.
1. The first change that we highly recommend, is to Loop your video. This way, when the video is over, it will replay right away without you having to click again. In the Video Options section, check the box next to Loop until stopped. Your video will now play until you change slides.
2. Next, we recommend having your video start automatically so that you do not have to click on the slide for it to begin. In the Start drop-down menu, choose Automatically . Some teachers may choose to leave their video to start with a click if they want to wait to begin the video. Choose the option that works best for your lesson.
3. Lastly, PowerPoint has some simple video editing tools, like trimming that you can use. If you want to cut some of the beginning or end of your video, click the Trim Video button. Then just drag the bar at the beginning and the end of the video to how you want it.
Feel free to explore the other editing options here to make your moving background perfect for your own presentation!
Step 5: Annotate on your Video
Once all the edits are done, and you have previewed your video ensuring perfection, you are ready to use this in your classroom! With PowerPoint, and more accessibly with the add-in, ClassPoint , you can use annotation tools to write over your video. This will help to call out information & help students understand in a new, clear way.

How to Add Moving Backgrounds to Your PowerPoint Slides
Have you ever wondered about how the presentation guy managed to get a moving background for his presentation? Of course, you had all your attention focused on it, and you definitely can’t wait to implement the same in your own slides! Well, it’s nothing but a video playing on the slide that is selected. A moving background/video indeed makes your presentation much more lively and interesting for the audience. It makes the presentation aesthetically appealing and never fails to draw attention.
So, now is the time to ask that question. How can you add a moving background to your PowerPoint presentation or how you can add a video to your PowerPoint slides? Well, the answer is simple and it is well detailed in the steps below. So without wasting any time, let’s dive in, shall we?
Step 1 : Firstly open the PowerPoint presentation and click on the slide to which you want to add a moving background.
As next, click on the INSERT tab from the top ribbon and then click on the Video dropdown button.
From the list of options available in the Video dropdown, click on Online Video if you want to find a video online. Or if you already have the video available on your PC, then you can click on the option Video on My PC option. I have selected the second option as I already have the video available locally.
Step 2 : On the Insert Video window, navigate to the location where your video is present.
Click on the video to select it and then hit the Insert button at the bottom of the window.
Step 3 : The video might be huge and you might want to use only a portion of that video in your presentation. There is no need to depend on an external application to trim down your video though. You can do it straight from PowerPoint itself. Let’s see how.
To trim the video inserted, click on the video first to select it. Now a new contextual tab named VIDEO TOOLS would appear at the very top part of the window. Click on the sub-tab named PLAYBACK under the VIDEO TOOLS main tab.
Now under the group named Editing, click on the button Trim Video .
Step 4 : On the Trim Video window, you have the option to set the start and end timings of the video to take out the slice that you want.
You can either drag the sliders to set the start time and the end time or you can use the time entering fields to enter the time.
To preview the slice you have cut off, you can hit the Play icon located at the bottom part of the window.
Once you are all done, hit the OK button to proceed.
Step 5 : Now if you would like to mute the audio when the video plays, you have options to do that as well.
To set the volume preferences, click on the video once and then hit the PLAYBACK contextual tab at the top ribbon.
Now click on the Volume dropdown button and then choose the Mute option to mute the volume while the video plays during the slideshow. You also have the options to set the volume as Low, Medium, or High instead of completely muting it.
Step 6: If you would like to start the video the moment the slide gets presented without any external trigger, then you click on the video once, then hit the PLAYBACK contextual tab, and then select the option Automatically from the Start dropdown menu under the group Video Options.
Or if you would like to start the video only when the slide is clicked on, then you can choose the option On Click instead of Automatically.
Step 7 : The other Video Options are as follows.
For all the points below, make sure you have clicked on the video and have clicked on the PLAYBACK contextual tab from the top ribbon.
- If you would like to play the video on full screen and display nothing else, tick the checkbox for the option Play Full Screen .
- If the video is not completely covering the screen and if you would like to hide it when it’s done playing, you can check the checkbox corresponding to the option Hide While Not Playing .
- If you want the video to keep repeating in a loop, check the checkbox corresponding to Loop until Stopped .
- If you want the video to rewind after it is done playing, then the option Rewind after Playing needs to be ticked.
Step 8 : The whole point is to have the video playing in the background. Which means you got to see the text in the foreground. Let’s see how you can bring the text that you had in Step 1 to the front.
Right click on the video and from the list of options that get expanded out, click on Send to Back . This will send the video to the background, which in effect, brings the text behind it to the front.
Step 9 : That’s it. You can now see that the text is brought to the front. However, if you feel like you cannot read the text well enough, there is a quick fix as detailed in the steps below.
Step 10 : Click on the text box to select it. Now a new contextual tab named DRAWING TOOLS will be visible at the very top part of the window.
Click on the sub-tab FORMAT under the DRAWING TOOLS main tab.
Now click on the dropdown button named Shape Fill.
Step 11 : From the options available, click on the Gradient option and then click on the More Gradients option as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 12: On the right side of the window, a new window now opens up, by the name Format Shape.
Click on the Paint Bucket icon first.
Now choose the radio button corresponding to the option Solid fill.
Now choose a color of your preference and set its transparency according to your preference.
I have chosen the color white and the transparency is set to 55% to make the text readable.
Step 13 : Just before starting the slideshow, there is one last step to do.
Click on the video once again and then click on the PLAYBACK contextual tab from the top ribbon.
Under the Video Options, uncheck the checkbox corresponding to the option Play Full Screen . If this option is checked, then the video would play on full screen and thus the text would not be visible.
Step 14 : That’s it. Let’s start the slideshow now. For that, click on the SLIDE SHOW tab from the top ribbon and then hit the button From Beginning to start the slide show from the beginning. Hope you enjoy your presentation that has a moving background!

6 Steps to Ensure You Never Lose a Microsoft Office File Again
Microsoft office vs. google docs, sheets, slides: which is best, saying goodbye to nova: the launcher that changed how i use android, quick links, animate an image background in powerpoint.
It's easy to improve the appearance of your Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow by including an attractive background . You might use a color, gradient, or pattern, or insert an image . Another way to make your background appealing is by animating it.
If you use Microsoft PowerPoint on Mac, you have the option to animate a still slide background. This adds subtle movement to the image, so it doesn't distract from your slideshow or its message.
As of February 2022, this feature is only available in PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac and PowerPoint 2021, 2019, and 2016 for Mac.
To set an image as an animated slide background in PowerPoint, you simply start by inserting the picture on your slide. If you already have an image on the slide you want to use, you can skip the first step below.
Related: How to Control When a Picture Appears in PowerPoint
Go to the Insert tab and select the Pictures drop-down box in the Images section of the ribbon. Choose where you'd like to add the image from: Photo Browser, Picture From File, Stock Images, or Online Pictures.
Select the image on the slide and head to the Picture Format tab.
Click "Animate as Background" on the right side of the ribbon.
A window will appear prompting you to select the important points on the image. These points determine the motion path for the animation.
Click to select each point. The path will move from the highest number to the lowest. When you finish, click "Apply."
The image will be automatically resized to cover the entire slide as the background. So if your image is portrait instead of landscape, you'll need to resize or crop it .
To view the animation, go to the Slide Show tab and pick "Play From Current Slide."
You'll see your image move very slowly, from your highest number point to your lowest. Again, this is a subtle animation which makes it nice if you have text or other elements you're speaking to on the slide.
To edit the motion path, select the image, return to the Picture Format tab, and pick "Animate as Background" as you did initially. Then, click the new path you want to use and hit "Apply" to save the change.
By adding a subtle animation to your slide background, you can give a little extra pizzazz to your slideshow or automatically move to a key part of the image.

It’s easy to use, a staple in meetings, conferences, classrooms, and now of course for online learning, and completely accessible.

It’s not easy and there are no guarantees but one quick and easy way to complement your content is using backgrounds .
You’ll be surpassed at the difference they make, and how much a little extra effort and attention to detail can succeed in making your PowerPoint presentation deliver on the day. We’ve put together this complete and comprehensive guide to PowerPoint background, taking you on a tour of sources, creation, and tips alongside practical advice.

You can either apply a template to a pre-created slideshow or if this is recommended, start with the template and add to it (from scratch or copy items from your previous creation) It’s quite easy to do, so let’s look at a break down of the steps.
Let’s imagine you’ve already downloaded and saved a background image onto your computer.
Step 1: Start PowerPoint, click on File and select New. This will open a series of preinstalled PowerPoint templates and themes options. Step 2: Click on open. Step 3: Locate your saved background file, double click to open it, and there you have it.
To add an existing presentation to your new background simply copy and paste.

4. Useful Tips When Using PowerPoint Backgrounds
Tip 1: modify to make your text pop.
Generally in PowerPoint Presentations, the rule of thumb is to keep text to a minimum, no full sentences, keywords only, and good organization. (don’t read out the slides, please -it’s a guaranteed turn-off). the slides support the speaker, they don’t replace the speaker. With this in mind, when you do use text, let’s make sure it is noticeable. Think of the size, font, typography, color, and style. Don’t go funky just for the sake of it. the style needs to fit with your context, fonts leave subliminal messages (strong and sturdy, trustworthy, professional, creative, imaginative, classy) think carefully about what you are trying to achieve and what message you are trying to get across.
Tip 2: Don’t use too vivid backgrounds
Everybody knows a little about color theory and colors are important. A vivid background color that overly distracts from the main content has done exactly the wrong job. A background adds to the content and works with it -it’s not a battle. A general rule is that cooler colors (blues/greens) often work well for the background, providing a setting for the main information to come alive. Vary colors by all means, but don’t go too bright or too wild, it makes people feel uncomfortable. And remember your content needs to shine through from the background and stand tall – don’t clash.
Tip 3: Think about the audience
Always think of your audience. One of the great things about PowerPoint presentations is that they can easily be customized and edited so use the chance. A great successful presentation that worked in the past is no guarantee of success the next time around. Things change, trends change, styles change and your audience changes too. Examples should be up-to-date and relevant, as should images. People are more and more familiar with presentations these days, they recognize a bog-standard PowerPoint and equally, they recognize something, that has a bit more care and attention.
Tip 4: Think about Branding
Backgrounds are ideal to transmit the idea of your brand. At the simplest level, colors and logos are a must. Consistency in slides and regularly placed branding will leave the audience with a memory imprint. Personalized photographic images where appropriate can also work well in creating a sense of realism and trust -it all goes to build that vital image connection for the listener.
Tip 5: Never forget the author’s rights
I mean – if you are using some free backgrounds, don’t forget to check out the conditions and license types. Some backgrounds need attribution and there is a specific process. Adding a final slide mentioning the authors of the images, or writing them down on the corner of the slides, not only covers you legally but it shows the audience that you are aware of the professional standards and norms to be adhered to. You are a trustworthy, honorable speaker, who is prepared to give credit where it is earned. Nice touch.
Final Words
Let’s make this point again. PowerPoint presentations are so, so common that in order to raise the stakes, we need to make a little more effort. Stand on the shoulders of the familiar presentation and push it forwards. Backgrounds aren’t so difficult but they can make an enormous difference to the overall view of your presentation. They don’t need to take you forever to create, they are a simple, easy, and often free way of creating a lasting impression.

Designed by Malti Drago, this cute PowerPoint background will add a touch of spring liveliness to your presentation. Use it when you want your slide deck to give off this homely kind of vibe.
Low poly (free)
Designed by SlideModel and, again, 100% free to use, “Low poly” is a professional background based on an imitation of a 3D surface with some subtle color shading going on. A very neutral, eye-pleasing design.
Black waves (free)
Not all presentations can pull off a dark background but if you’re in a modern area of business such as tech, engineering, or digital marketing and want to put your game face on, the free “Black waves” PowerPoint background will help you do just that.
Blue art (free)
Note: the developers of this background, “Free-PowerPoint-Templates” don’t allow you to download high-res mockup pictures from their website so this one might look a tad blurry. Nothing to worry about, though, if you choose to download it, it will be perfectly sharp, just as its design is.
All the templates above?
Yeah, they’re pretty. But Storydoc gives you much more than nice-looking presentations.
We deliver real results.
Transform your static presentation with Storydoc and close more deals, improve engagement metrics, and increase your customer base. Like these teams did:
"...We've seen higher conversion, of up to x2 , among prospects who engaged with the Storydoc pages"
Boris Zlatkin
Digital Marketing Lead
"Using Storydoc helped us build a rich and engaging deck, effectively delivering the full scope and value of our streaming service TVNow Premium"
Dirk Hannapel
BD & Sales Director
"...Since we've started using Storydoc our sales accelerated, increasing our customer base by more than 70% . It became an integral part of our sales funnel, helping us score new deals."
Red-blue-green (free)
A bit retro, a bit corny, and a bit 8-bit, but it still works! The RBG theme of this PowerPoint background will make it a great choice for all industries that have to do with image processing: TV, media, advertising, photography, graphic design, and so on.
Lens flare (free)
Okay, this one *is* from Microsoft and I still decided to include it in the gallery despite all of what I said about how “boring” their backgrounds were. This one is classy, subtle, and easy on the eyes and free to download from the Microsoft website itself.
Horizontal stripes (free)
Using this one as a background for all of your PowerPoint slides might backfire as the differently-sized horizontal stripes can feel confusing and make the text harder to read. It will work great as a background for summary or “main point” slides, though.
Lavender? (Free)
Okay, I’m not so great with plants but I do think this one is Lavender. (Is it? Feel free to drop me a line if it’s not). Either way, a tasteful close-up of some nice flowers. Oh, and there’s a butterfly in there. Add a level of transparency to it, and you’ll have a very cute and professional look for a PPT background.
Stylish cartoon
Designed by Yasemin Yaldiz of Turkey (and part of a collection of 4 different illustrations), this background for PowerPoint feels mysterious and inviting at the same time. A very unique aesthetic will surely help make your presentation unforgettable.
A very simple idea executed to perfection. Splashes of bright paint on a dark background—looking cool and modern without trading off any of the perfect legibility.
Simple desk
This cute PowerPoint background brought to you by Slidefabric will be a great choice for corporate presentations. There’s the desk, very much Marie-Kondo-style, there’s the nice looking chair, you just *feel* yourself getting comfortable and productive only looking at this one.
Digital classroom
Any teachers in the house? Yeah, remote teaching is a pain, one that this fun PowerPoint background won’t necessarily heal on the spot, but I’m sure your students will appreciate the touch and feel this one can add to your presentations.
Pastel wallpaper
Okay, this is cheating a bit because the image on the left has actually been designed as a desktop wallpaper. Still, it’s beautiful while not being too distracting—that’s what makes a perfect PowerPoint background.
Blurred backgrounds bundle
Part of a bundle of 50+ similar-yet-different PPT backgrounds, all of those based on blurred splashes of color. A good pick for a funky, out-of-the-box presentation.
Fiery wallpaper
Yes, I did it again. Yet another wallpaper-turned-background, one that will work great for all the same reasons. Designed by HappyPastels, loved by all customers!
Customizable flowers
A pretty watercolor picture of flowers great for brochures, covers, or even business cards (yes, you can create all of those in PowerPoint). The bundle comes with a bunch of customizable text fields filled with different pastel colors.
Pastel rainbow
Another pack of PPT backgrounds on our list, this one created by Jax & Jake, containing 8 backgrounds with semi-transparent fill, 8 ones with white fill, and 8 transparent borders.
Fresh watercolor
Last but not least, “Fresh watercolor” by KaySquaredPrintables. A PowerPoint background I loved because it just feels so comforting and stylish at the same time. Plus, I think the dynamics of the flowers on the sides of the image are just perfect for creating well-balanced slides. A really neat piece of work.
And that's a wrap!
Hope you’ve found a PowerPoint background you fell in love with and one that will really captivate your audience. Just make sure to go for a design that fits the theme and vibe of your presentation. Cute little flowers wouldn’t work too well on a slide deck about war in Iraq, would they? But I’m sure you’d figure that out on your own. So why are you still here? Time to start creating!
