Essay, Paragraph, Speech on “ A Housewarming Party” Essay for Class 9, Class 10, Class 12 Class and Graduate Exams.

A Housewarming Party

A housewarming party is a special party to be held when someone buys or moves into a new apartment or house. The person or people who bought the property or moved are the ones who throw the party. The party is an opportunity for friends and family to congratulate the person on the new home. It also gives people a chance to see what the new home looks like. It is an opportunity to fill the new space with love and hopefully presents.

It is traditional to bring a gift to a housewarming party. Some people register a list of items they want or need for their new home at a local store or stores. Some common items people will put on a gift registry include kitchen tools like knives and items like curtains. Even if there isn’t a registry, a good housewarming gift is something to decorate the new house with like a piece of art or a plant. You can also bring food or drinks to share with the other guests. This is often appreciated since at a housewarming there isn’t a lot of food served, usually just appetizers or sandwiches. There are usually no planned activities like games at a house warming party. The host or hostess of the party will, however, probably give all the guests a tour of their new home. Sometimes, because a housewarming party happens shortly after a person moves into their new home, people may be asked to help unpack boxes. This isn’t usual though.

Housewarming parties get their name from the fact that a long time ago people would actually bring firewood to a new home as a gift. This was so that the person could keep their home warm for the winter. Now most homes have central heating and don’t use fires to keep warm.

Griha Pravesh Ceremony – a Traditional Hindu Religious House Warming Ceremony

By Pankaj Bhalerao

griha pravwsh

The Griha Pravesh ceremony is a traditional Hindu religious ceremony which has to be done on the first entry into a new house. It is actually done on the first day of one’s living in the new home. In other words, it is a house warming ceremony which involves pujas, archanas, yajnas and offerings.

According to the ancient religious Hindu scriptures, Griha Pravesh is basically of three types – the Apoorwah, the Sapoorwah and the Dwandwah. The first entry to an entirely newly built house on a land which has been also newly selected is known as the Apoorwah, which means new.

Whereas for the Sapoorwah griha pravesh ceremony, the purity of the Panchag is more important. This later rule has also been laid down for the Dwandwah griha pravesh as well. Though this ceremony can be done at any time – may be daytime or at night – but it is more preferable during the daytime.

The scriptures even say that a house is ready for the ceremony only after certain things have been completed. For example, it is necessary to have all the doors and windows of the house to be fitted and the roof of the house also should also be covered. Only then one can perform the ceremony of Griha Pravesh.

Another important aspect is to perform the Vaastu puja in which the Vaastu Devta is worshipped and offerings are made to the priests. The priests and the ascetics are given lavish feasts. This ritual is done outside the new home.

In this ritual, a copper pot filled with water having nine types of grains and a coin has a coconut kept on top of it tied with a red thread called Moli is taken into the house after the priest performs the Puja.

This pot is placed near the ‘havan’ or the sacred fire which is lighted to perform the ‘Griha shanti’, or ‘peace in the house’. The havan is performed to remove the ill effects of the planets and also to throw out all the negative vibrations from the house in order to have a peaceful atmosphere in and around the house and its living members.

The hard times changed for them when they took all the risk and shifted to their new home in the city after performing the Satyanarayana Puja, which is considered very auspicious on the occasion of entering to a new house.

Crossing the hurdles of difficulty and hard time, today my friend’s family is one of the richest and renowned families of Indore. Some people say that this is definitely the result of the rituals performed at the Griha Pravesh ceremony which must have been done at a perfect time and date.

So, luck also affects many traditions in being lucky and fruitful in life. According to me, the Griha Pravesh ceremony certainly has effects on the lifestyle and social life of a family.

Making the most of a housewarming

The term ‘housewarming’ literally means to ‘warm a house’. Centuries ago, friends and family would come over and start fires in the various fireplaces of the new home – in part to warm the house, and in part to banish evil spirits by providing protective warmth.

On a recent Sunday evening I was asked to a housewarming. As far as I remember, there was no fire place – just central heating. Nor was there any concern to repeal evil spirits. My task was to bless the new home of an Indian family whom we know well. As I discovered, it was the last of three house-warming parties – my understanding is that on the Friday evening there had been a party for work colleagues; on the Saturday a party for friends from the local Indian association; while on the Sunday they had invited members from several Tamil-speaking Christian fellowships. Some of the songs and prayers were in Tamil, and others in English.

For the formal dedication of the new home I chose to read Psalm 127, which begins with the words “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who labour build it in vain”. After a brief exposition, I led in a prayer of blessing. Instead of simple extempore prayer I chose to use a ‘prayer of dedication of a house’ written by the Corrymeela Community:

We dedicate this house to you and your work as the God of peace. May it be a place of joy, laughter and freedom; A place of renewal; and refreshment for those who are weary. A place of hope for those who have become disillusioned. A place of healing and comfort for those broken and hurt. A place of forgiveness for those who seek a new way of life. A place of encouragement for those who hunger and thirst for peace and justice. A place of vision and inspiration for all those who seek a new and better way for our country.

The ‘service’ was then followed by a wonderful feast of Indian food.  It was a very happy occasion.

I find it interesting that ‘the dedication of a new home’ does not feature in many standard denominational worship manuals – perhaps because today few British Christians – as distinct from Christians from other parts of the world – seem to see the need for a blessing of a new home: if they have a ‘house warming’ party, then it tends to be a party and nothing more. Certainly I could only find readings and prayers for such an occasion in the old Baptist Orders and Prayers for Church Worship (first published 1960) and the Church of Scotland’s Book of Common Order (1994) – there was nothing, for instance in the Church of England’s many volumes of Common Worship (2000). However, A New Zealand Prayer Book (first published by New Zealand Anglicans in 1989) devotes almost ten pages to a liturgy which involves blessing the living room, a bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen, a study, a workshop, and a terrace or garden – with the optional inclusion of the Lord’s Supper.

What is the rationale of such a house blessing? According to A New Zealand Prayer Book , “The blessing of a home encourages Christians to dedicate their life at home to God and to others”. In the past this has been my reasoning too. I have seen it as a ‘pastoral’ rite of passage. In Living out the Call: Serving God’s People I noted that it can prove helpful, especially to “older children and young people [who] can find the move to a new area difficult; and all the more so because the move has not been chosen by them but imposed by their parents”.

However, on reflection, I now realise that I failed to see the evangelistic potential of a ‘house warming’. Such an event can be a great opportunity to invite into the home new neighbours – as well as friends (including some who will presumably not share our faith) – and in the relaxed context of a party for a minister to be asked not just to say a prayer of blessing, but also in a non-threatening manner speak of the difference Jesus can make to family life. The fact is that we live at a time when the Christian church in the West is in major decline – we need to be creative and take every opportunity to reverse the trend by sharing our faith with friends and neighbours. Ministers need to encourage their people to share their faith in the context of a house warming party!

Before Your Guests Arrive

No matter what theme or activities you choose to include in your housewarming party, remember to factor in plenty of time for setting up before your guests arrive. You don't want to feel frazzled when you hear that first knock on the door.

A housewarming party is typically organized by the person who recently moved into a new house or apartment. The purpose of a housewarming party is to celebrate a new home and meet your new neighbors.

A housewarming party doesn't have to be a big bash. You can keep it quaint and casual by inviting close friends and family and keeping the guest list small.

Housewarming parties usually last between two and four hours, depending on the theme and types of activities involved. In your invitation, select a clear start and end time to ensure your guests know when to arrive—and how long to stay.

Grihapravesham: The Significance of House-warming

Sadhguru looks at the significance behind Grihapravesham, the traditional house-warming ceremony in India.

Grihapravesham: The Significance of House-warming

Q: What is the significance of Grihapravesham, and how should it be done?

Sadhguru: There are two kinds of Grihapravesham generally celebrated in India. When a woman gets married, when she enters her husband’s house for the first time, it used to be a big event. Nowadays, they may already be living together , but otherwise, it was a major event. So this was made into a very sacred process and a Grihapravesham was performed, because what kind of woman enters your house and how she enters your home will determine the nature of your future, your progeny and how they live. It is very important that she enters with love, wanting to give herself totally to the home and family. If she enters having something else in her heart and mind, she can ruin that family in a million different ways. If she enters the house with negative emotions, when she conceives, she will create the wrong kind of life and bear the wrong kind of children, which will make you suffer for the rest of your life. So it was ensured that she entered the house with utmost honor and auspiciousness.

There is a lot of ritual around the event. Gradually, the ritual has gotten smaller and smaller, and now, the woman enters the house before she is married. How she enters the home does not mean anything anymore. Today, marriage means just a little bit of romance between two people. That is not how it was looked at earlier. A marriage was a partnership that was going to determine everything about the couple and their children. Elaborate care was taken so that she entered the house properly. This is one kind of Grihapravesham.

Making the Space Alive

The other kind of Grihapravesham is, when a new structure is built, you conduct a process which makes the space alive. You want the house to be in the right kind of condition. The design of the house, the aesthetics, what kind of paint – that is also important, but what kind of energy fills this space is very important. Grihapravesham is a minor form of consecrating the space. No one would ever move into a house which was not consecrated. All these things were done essentially to create a certain enhanced sense of life energy, so that the people who lived in this house would naturally move towards wellbeing.

People always consecrated their homes in whichever way they knew best, and only then moved in. If the kings were sensible and benevolent, they consecrated the whole town . They created any number of consecrated places in the town because they wanted everyone to live in consecrated spaces . Whether you walk on the street, or do business, or live in that town, everyone was constantly in a consecrated space because if you want to produce generations of enhanced human beings with a phenomenal sense of energy, intellect, and capability, you need this kind of energy and space. Otherwise, only by accident or by personal dint, someone may become something, but you will not produce a whole generation of wonderful people.

This sense that no human being should live in an unconsecrated space is deep-rooted in this culture. It is just like, if you plant something into this earth, only if the roots are sticking in rich earth, flowers and fruits will grow. If the earth is not rich and enhanced enough to sustain life, flowers and fruits will not grow. Even if they appear, they will be too meager; it will never be a full-blown flowering. So we always gave enormous importance to these aspects of life.

It is because of this that the culture produced a galaxy of knowledge, a galaxy of enlightened beings. Every generation produced this simply because they took care of many aspects like this. Nowhere else on this planet have single generations of people attained to such glorious heights of knowing as this culture .

The Right Kind of Nourishment

Unfortunately, in the last 800 to 900 years, this aspect has been badly fractured. There was a time when almost every family had the fortune of doing Grihapravesham before they moved into their homes. Periodically, they did something to enhance the house; this was part of almost every household. They conducted the needed rituals and processes at least once a year to see that the space in the house was enhanced. This was an essential understanding of how to generate a conducive atmosphere for a human being to grow to his full potential .

When we say “full potential,” today’s world thinks of full potential only in terms of how much money a person can make. The modern idea of success has unfortunately become extremely rudimentary and gross. How far can you climb the social ladder, how much money have you made, this is all the idea of success is.

In earlier times, the idea of success was not like this. It was very broad and profound. Someone was considered successful only if he was in a certain state of blissfulness and knowing about himself and the world he lived in. If he was socially honored, materially prosperous and able to earn the love of his family, friends and society – only then was he considered a successful man; that is how this society looked at it. No matter how much money he had, if he did not earn people’s love, they would say his life was wasted. Even till the last generation, this used to be a common conversation, “What does it matter how much money you have? Have you earned people’s love? Do people around you love you?” This was the most important thing. But in a matter of 30 to 40 years, we have managed to uproot this quite substantially.

Grihapravesham is about creating the right kind of soil for this plant – yourself – to grow, flower and fruit. Unfortunately, most people who conducted these things became corrupt and routine-bound rather than being able to understand and articulate their understanding as to why this was being done. So people began to give up on these processes. Today, moving into a new house means people throw a party where everybody will eat more than they should and get drunk. That way, you are not going towards your wellbeing; in fact, your wellbeing is going to be an uphill task.

Any amount of intellectual knowledge or money is not going to bring wellbeing. You can see this in the world: affluent societies are not living well simply because the fundamentals that are needed for life are not taken care of. It is very important that you create the right kind of space around you so that you live well.

Editor’s Note: The Bhairavi Punya Pooja is a unique process of energizing a space in such a way that it transforms into a vibrant, live environment. It has been designed by Sadhguru and is available for new homes, old homes, office spaces, hospitals, or any residential and commercial building.

Whether you are giving your own housewarming speech or offering to speak at a housewarming for a friend or relative, it is important to stress the themes of new beginnings, feeling welcome and making new memories. A housewarming speech also is an opportunity to thank everyone who came to celebrate this important personal event.

Thank Guests for Attending

Begin the speech by expressing appreciation for everybody's attendance. The sentiment may be as simple as "Thank you all for coming" or "Your presence is appreciated at this special moment in our lives." If any particular guest helped in the process of finding, decorating or purchasing the home in any significant way, thank him by name and relate how he helped. Keep these statements brief and descriptive, such as "Special thanks to Uncle Bob, who first saw this listing in the newspaper and called us immediately. We don't know if we would have found this home without him."

Express Wishes for the Future

If this is the place where you or the new homeowner intend to raise a family, start a business or bring home a new spouse, the housewarming speech should celebrate that milestone. Speak about the new memories you hope to make or the happy moments you wish for the new homeowner. Be specific to the new house; if the house has an old oak tree, talk about how you look forward to watching your children play around it as they grow up. If the house has a big fireplace, you might talk about hanging Christmas stockings there. Express sentiments personal to you or the new homeowner.

Tell a Story

Sometimes it is appropriate to tell a funny or personal story in a housewarming toast. For example, you might share a happy memory about a traditional backyard game of catch you hope begins again in the new home. You could reminisce about a happy childhood playing in the attic and talk about hoping your children have similar adventures in the new attic. Think about your favorite memories and share your hopes for how they would fit in the new home.

Housewarming Toasts

Give a toast using a traditional housewarming blessing or poem. There are many sentiments to choose from when giving a housewarming speech. A few examples are an Irish house toast: “May joy and peace surround you, Contentment latch your door; And happiness be with you now, And bless you evermore.” A line from an Emily Dickinson poem reads, “Where thou art – that – is Home.” Or quote Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. with “Where we love is home – home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.”

Present Traditional Gifts

Instead of a straightforward speech, consider presenting new homeowners with a selection of traditional housewarming gifts . Present each gift with a brief description of its symbolism. According to real-estate agent Jessi Hall, traditional gifts include bread, wine, salt, a broom and candles. Give bread so they never go hungry, wine so they know joy and prosperity, and salt so life in the new home will have flavor. A broom represents a wish for the new home to be tidy and welcoming, and present candles so there always is light and warmth.

House Warming

I t was a Sunday night worship experience I'll never forget. There was singing, Scripture reading, and heartfelt prayer. No, it wasn't at church. It wasn't even a church service. It was a house blessing at the home of our close friends.

The concept of a house blessing isn't new. Moses talked about writing God's commands on our doorframes and our gates in Deuteronomy 6:9 . In fact, many Christian traditions, such as the Episcopal Church, have used the house blessing for centuries. But while these formal house blessings are typically performed by a priest, anyone can invite God to be part of a family dwelling. It can be a quiet occasion, or a new take on a housewarming party. Either way, a house blessing will help your family feel settled in your new abode.

That sense of home is especially important for children. According to Carol Burge, a marriage and family counselor in suburban Chicago, children look at their home differently when it is set apart by prayer. She says, "Children need their home to be a place of refuge from the world. A house blessing reminds them that the Holy Spirit is present in every room of their house."

The Heart of the Home

Peter and Elizabeth Roskam, a couple in our church fellowship group, had just moved across town. In the midst of moving boxes and painting walls they asked if I would help them lead their young family in a ceremony of dedication. I'd never been asked to be part of anything quite like this before. It sounded meaningful—and fun—so I said yes.

When my wife, Wendy, and I arrived, we were greeted with hugs and smiles. In addition to Peter and Elizabeth and their four kids (ages 6 to 13), Peter's mom was on hand. We gathered in the kitchen where 13-year-old Gracey offered us just-baked chocolate chip cookies. As we nibbled away, I kicked things off by reading the story of the wise man who builds his house on a solid foundation ( Matt. 7:24-27 ).

Then we all headed outside to the front entry. We gathered on the porch and thanked the Lord for giving the Roskam family such a beautiful home and asked God to bless all who would enter in it. (A few years ago, I traveled to Israel and carried back some Jordan River water. I brought a small plastic bottle of the water and splashed it on the front door as a way of acknowledging the Lord's presence. The kids thought it was cool!)

As we walked over the threshold, Peter prayed that family, friends, and guests would be able to sense the Father's presence in their home. Then it was on to each room of the main floor. We stopped in each room and someone prayed a specific prayer related to the use of that room.

As we approached the children's bedrooms, Peter and Elizabeth placed their hands on their kids' shoulders and prayed a special blessing on their children. They prayed that these rooms would be a safe and special place where the children would feel protected and cared for. Imagine the sense of comfort that can give a child who is adjusting to a new living situation.

Inviting God In

Before the Roskams' house blessing, I'd never really given much thought to the idea of asking God to be present in a new home. The best tradition I'd seen so far came from the movie, It's a Wonderful Life. After George Bailey helps Mr. Martini secure a loan for his first home, George and his wife, Mary, arrive at the front door with gifts. The Baileys bestow a benediction of sorts with a loaf of bread ("that this house will never know hunger"), a box of salt ("that life will always have flavor"), and a bottle of wine ("that joy and prosperity will reign forever").

My wife and were so impressed by that scene that we began to give those three symbolic gifts to friends who moved. Without exception, the unexpected presents were enthusiastically welcomed. But after our experience with the Roskams, I can't imagine celebrating a friend's new home any other way.

While you may want to have your house blessed by your pastor or other respected Christian, don't feel that it's your only option. It is consistent with Scripture for a layperson—including you!—to perform this action. When Moses talked about writing God's commands on the doorframes, he was not speaking directly to priests, but to parents. Keith Bushardt, who recently moved to a new house with his family, notes, "Practically speaking, we didn't have a relationship with a church when we moved, and we didn't want to wait until then to consecrate our new place to the Lord. My wife, Linda, and I planned our own house blessing without the aid of a pastor and it was a wonderful ceremony."

A DIY Ceremony

To plan your own house blessing, consider these ideas for a stress-free, fun-filled do-it-yourself ceremony:

Plan the event as a family. Several days (if not weeks) before your house blessing, sit down with your children and discuss the ingredients that will make it smack of your family's tastes. Will it include music? Will the decorations be homemade? If you make a banner or family crest, who will do it? Who will you invite? If extended family lives nearby, be sure to include them. Don't overlook your new neighbors. This event could be a meaningful way to communicate the values you embrace as a family.

If your "new" home is truly new, try to do a house blessing before the drywall is painted. Then, have every member of the family use pencils to write "Dear God" letters describing their hopes and dreams for life in this house on the walls in each room. Even after the paint and paper go up, your kids will remember that their messages to God will always be part of their house. You can also take Sharpies and write Scripture verses on the sub-flooring before the carpet is installed. That way, you'll literally be standing on God's Word throughout your home.

Don't just have a token prayer in the entryway. Plan on winding your way through all the rooms in the house as a way of presenting the whole dwelling to the Lord. Have each family member choose a room for which they'd like to pray. Ask them to think about what will go on in each room, the people who will use it, and how God can be a part of your lives in that space. For example, as you pause in the family room, circle around the couch and ask that the conversations that take place there will honor God, and help you grow closer as a family. In the kitchen, thank the Lord for good food and ask that he continue to provide for your family's physical needs. In the dining room, thank the Lord for a place to entertain extended family and guests, and to fill you with a desire to extend hospitality. In the bedrooms, ask for God's protection for those who sleep there and the calming of fears that sometimes come at night. Give thanks for a personal sanctuary in which to retreat and a warm bed in which to sleep. In the yard, thank God for his creation and ask him to help you be good caretakers of the earth and all living things.

Include friends and family in the ceremony. If a grandparent is present, ask them to pray whenever they feel led. In the Roskams' family room, Peter's mother prayed that her grandchildren would grow up in their new home loving each other. Keith's good friend, a former pastor, prayed in the entry hall that warmth would greet all who stepped inside the front door. Invite your guests to offer their own form of thanks and worship through a song, a poem, or a passage of Scripture.

Don't forget the music. If someone in your family plays a musical instrument, encourage him to play a piece in one of the rooms to give him a sense of ownership in the ceremony and to flavor the atmosphere with celebration.

Moving into a new home is one of life's most stressful events, especially for children. By inviting God to be a permanent and meaningful part of your life in a new place, you'll give your children—and yourselves—a sense of peace and comfort that can only come from the real Master of the house.

Greg Asimakoupoulos is a writer and the father of three daughters. He and his family live in Illinois.

Bless This House

Use some of the following Bible verses during your house blessing:
Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Psalm 127:1
By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. Proverbs 24:3-4
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2
(God said), "Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there." 2 Chronicles 7:15-16
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21
(Jesus said), "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." Revelation 3:20

A Guide to the Housewarming Celebration in Simple Ways

5 tips to celebrating new house warming ceremony in chennai.

We all wish to live in the dream home peacefully and happily, right? Buying a home and onboarding is not ideal for starting your life in the new home. One needs to perform a new house warming ceremony to protect your house, spread positive energies and purify the environment to live long-life.

The House warming ceremony (Griha Pravesham) is a traditional Hindu ceremony that has been followed for many years across the world. As people buy a new home, they choose the desired date as per the priest’s input and perform the new house opening ceremony with their families. Though the pandemic paused many housewarming ceremonies, people now are keen to perform a new house opening ceremony, never like before.

Whether you want to buy a home in Chennai or buy an apartment in Chennai, you can consider Isha Homes. We construct homes as per the Vastu compliance and we encourage performing house warming ceremonies to lead a peaceful life in the new home/apartment as per individual’s wish.

Essential Tips for House Warming Ceremony

Tip 1 – House with Vastu

Vastu is a familiar term in India, but when it comes to performing a new house warming ceremony, we pray to 5 elements of god such as water, fire, wind, sun and earth. Thus, it is ideal for constructing a home as per the Vastu experts’ suggestions. During the ceremony, people will pray to five elements along with the priest to bring peace and harmony into the home. With a copper Kalash in hand filled with water and coconut over it, the head of the home has to place the right foot into the home.

Tip 2 – Construction completion

Before deciding on a day to perform the house warming ceremony, one vital factor is that we should make sure the construction is completed to some extent, so that the house warming ceremony happens seamlessly. For instance, windows, paintings and electrical fittings have to be placed and assembled aptly. Many people perform the function without even constructing the home properly. In addition to this, the entire family is recommended to stay in the new house on the day of the house warming ceremony night.

A House warming ceremony is expected to be performed at an auspicious time. Just like we see a good time for all activities, there should be a specific time for performing this function. It is believed that the right time brings good fortune to the new home. While planning for the house warming ceremony, you can consult an astrologer or check the religious calendar for suitable dates. Besides, seeing a good time brings happiness, health and prosperity into the new home.

Tip 3 – Entrance Portion of the House Warming Ceremony Home

Did you know that the main entrance/door of the house warming ceremony’s home should be decorated with flowers? While performing the function, the main door needs to be decorated in a unique way according to the suggestions of the priest who is performing the pooja on the day of the event. This portion of the home is called Sinha Dwar according to the Vastu principles. To make your main door appealing on the house warming day, place some goddess symbols such as Lakshmi and Swastika for bringing good health and prosperity to the people in the home.

Tip 4 – Cleansing the Home

Not everything has to be performed by the priest. Cleansing is a part of the new house warming ceremony and it can be done with Gangajal. Thus liquid is kept in a separate Kalash in the corner of the home. Some raw mango leaves are placed over the Kalash and these leaves are dipped in the liquid, sprinkled all over the home. Once this liquid is sprinkled, it is believed that negative vibes are eliminated in the home.

Tip 5 – Milk for Blessing

Boiling milk is the tradition to be followed during the new house warming ceremony. Since boiling milk is considered to be bringing prosperity to the home, it has become a mandatory process in all new house opening ceremony functions. A female from the home is asked to boil milk in the new utensils and then rice is added to make rice prasad (sweet). This prasad is served after the pooja for all members of the home.

Housewarming Invitation Letter with Samples

How to write a housewarming invitation letter.

A new home is great excuse to have all your friends and family over, and a great way to meet your new neighbors. While making plans for your housewarming party, you’ll want to send out housewarming invitations , either physically or electronically, to invite guests to check out your new dwelling and save you the trouble of having to celebrate alone. However, writing a housewarming invitation letter can be very confusing, especially if you have no idea of what your letter should look like. This is why you need to learn to write one that reflects the purpose of the party and speaks to your guest personally, instead of hiring someone to do the job for you.

Depending on your persona and standard of living, you can either choose to make your party formal or informal and your style of invite has to reflect this choice. Before you begin writing any invitations, take a few minutes to plan out how memorable and what message you want your party to carry. Whatever style you choose must include the following details:

  • Date and Time
  • Venue and Address
  • RSVP Requests
  • Maps and Directions
  • Name of hosts
  • Special requests such as food or drinks contributions etc.

  • Keep the tone of the letter happy and informal. For a formal party, be sure to write in a manner that is formal and inviting as well.
  • Write the name, place and date of the event without any mistakes. Be sure to include map and directions to your new place. You do not want to have people getting lost on your account.
  • Be sure to check the letter for unnecessary repetition, grammatical errors and spelling errors.

New Home Congratulations

A simple “congratulations on your new home” is a good way to go. You can keep it that short and sweet…or add a little something extra to it.

  • “Congrats on your new home! So very happy for you!”
  • “Congratulations on your new home, sweet home!”
  • “I just love seeing a dream come true. Congratulations on your new place.”
  • “Warmest congratulations on your new home. I have a feeling this is going to be a wonderful place for the whole family.”
  • “Loved seeing the pictures of your new house! Can’t wait to see it in person. Congratulations!”
  • “Extending heartfelt congratulations as you settle in to your new house…and looking forward to seeing you make it home.”
  • “Your new home is just perfect! Congratulations on finding just the right place to live in, laugh in and grow as a family.”
  • “So thrilled to be celebrating your new home with you. Congratulations!”

Helpful tip: Need some other words for “home” to keep things interesting? Try one of these: place, space, nest, pad, digs, dwelling, lair, crib, address, abode, shelter, haven, residence, casa, domicile, habitat, headquarters, HQ, home base, base of operations.

Housewarming Wishes

An upbeat wish for the new home is great on its own or in combination with a “congratulations.” It could be a wish for the near future (unpacking, getting settled) or for years down the road (making memories, growing as a family).

  • “Best wishes as you settle in to your new place! I hope you have fun making it all yours.”
  • “Sharing in your excitement over your new house and wishing you much happiness as you get settled in.”
  • “Congrats on the new apartment! I hope you’re already feeling right at home.”
  • “Sending warmest wishes for your new home. May it always be filled with laughter and love.”
  • “Wishing your family all the best as you make your new house a home.”
  • “Hoping your new home will always be a respite and a haven in the midst of a busy world—a place of warmth and comfort where you can relax, recharge and just enjoy being together.”
  • “Here’s to your new HQ! May all your present and future operations prosper there!”

Helpful Tip: Here are a few descriptive words that could help warm up your wishes for a new home: cozy, happy, safe, comfortable, comfy, secure, sheltering, warm, welcoming, relaxing, renewing, peaceful.

Blessings and Prayers for a New Home

There really is something sacred about home. No wonder it feels so natural for many of us to either bless or pray over a friend’s or family member’s new place.

  • “May your new house be blessed with warmth, love and togetherness.”
  • “Praying your new home will be a blessing to your family.”
  • “Moving in to a new home is such an exciting time! I pray that the process goes smoothly for you and that the joy of finally being there outweighs any stress or worries.”
  • “Bless your family’s new home. May its walls always shelter you. May its warmth always comfort you. May its rooms fill up with happy memories year after year.”
  • “Praying a special blessing of peace and protection over your beautiful new home.”
  • “God bless your family as you settle in to your new home and through all the years you share there.”

Helpful Tip: Central faith texts like the Bible, the Torah and the Quran definitely have some things to say about home. If you have a favorite home-related passage, consider including it with your housewarming message.

Compliments on the New Place

A housewarming card can also be an opportunity to compliment your recipient, either for choosing a great home or for their patience and hard work saving for it.

  • “Your new house is just beautiful. Congratulations!”
  • “You’ve worked for this home for a long time. Here’s to making your dream come true. You deserve it!”
  • “Your new home is such a perfect reflection of you. I love the way you’ve already made it all your own.”
  • “Love your new place! I see you being so happy here, and that makes me happy, too!”
  • “You’ve really turned your new place into something amazing! Congratulations on bringing your vision for it to life!”
  • “Your patience in waiting for the right time and the right house has really paid off. Congrats on finding the perfect home for your family to grow in!”
  • “Your new pad is fantastic! You really have great taste!”

Helpful Tip: Even if the new home is a bit of a fixer-upper, you could still compliment your recipient for being a smart homebuyer and seeing the home’s potential.

Congrats on Your First Home

A first home is a pretty big deal. If that’s the case for your recipient, you should give it a special mention in your message.

  • “I just couldn’t be happier for you as you get settled in to your very first home.”
  • “Wishing you every happiness in your first house!”
  • “Congratulations on buying your first house! It looks like it’s going to be a wonderful place to get started.”
  • “Moving in to your first home is so special. May this be a joyful time that you’ll always remember fondly.”
  • “Celebrating your first home along with you!”
  • “Bye-bye, renting…Hello, home ownership! Congratulations on your first house!”
  • “Congratulations on your first home! It took a lot of hard work to make it happen, but you did it!”

Helpful Tip: If you have a fond or funny memory of moving in to your first home, consider sharing it in your message.

First Home as a Couple

You may want to make a special mention when it’s a couple’s first home together. Even if one or both have already established homes individually, it’s a noteworthy occasion when they move in to a new home that will be theirs as a couple.

  • “So happy you found such a great place to share. Congratulations on your first home as a couple!”
  • “Best wishes as you join households and make a happy new home together.”
  • “Wishing you much happiness in your first house together!”
  • “May your first home together be a place where you can grow in love and happiness and nurture the dreams you share.”
  • “From his place and her place to our place…Congratulations to you both on your new home!”
  • “May your new shared address be truly blessed.”
  • “Congratulations on your first home together. Wishing many happy shared years there!”

Helpful Tip: Couples who are older, remarried or unmarried tend to be a little forgotten when it comes to housewarming wishes. The fact that you remembered and took a moment to write a few lines will mean a lot.

New Home with Blended Family

There’s both joy and stress involved when it’s not only separate households blending into one, but kids and other family, too. You can use your housewarming message to congratulate the family on their new home and to wish them a smooth transition together.

  • “Congratulations on joining households and bringing your family together in your new home. May it be a very happy place for all of you!”
  • “I imagine it’s probably a little chaotic adjusting to a new house and a new family dynamic at the same time, but I hope the joy of being there together outweighs any stress.”
  • “Wishing your beautiful, boisterous blended family every happiness in your new home!”
  • “Blending families is never simple, but I hope the added space and new location will help the process along. Best wishes to all of you!”
  • “So happy you’ve found the perfect place to share and grow closer as a brand-new family!”
  • “Congratulations on your new home! I hope y’all will be even happier than the Brady Bunch!”

Helpful Tip: A few ways to address your wishes to a whole family (blended or otherwise): Dear Smith Family, Dear Peter, Amy and family, Dear Peter, Amy & kids, Dear Peter, Amy, Tate, Zach and Fiona,

New Home Humor

If you know your recipient enjoys a touch of humor, then it’s okay to joke around a little with your housewarming message.

  • “Your new house is so great. When can I move in?”
  • “Congrats on your new home! And remember—there’s no time limit on unpacking. Sometimes it takes a month or twelve.”
  • “Your new home is simply gorgeous. (And I’m mildly jealous!)”
  • “Finally, a place that will fit your vinyl collection! Best wishes for your new home/listening station.”
  • “Yay! You’re in your new home at last! And just think—you only had to sign your name like 6700 times to make it happen.”
  • “Wow! Your first house is a lot fancier than mine was. You’ve got flushing toilets and everything. Nice!”
  • “I’m so glad you didn’t go with the yurt. Congratulations on your excellent home choice!”

Helpful Tip: When it comes to humor, keep it good-natured and not mean-spirited. You don’t want to write anything that would make them feel bad about themselves or their new place.

New Home After Hardship

Sometimes a move to a new home is the result of difficult circumstances, such as divorce, job loss, the death of a spouse or the need downsize to a smaller or more accessible space. In those instances, you can write a message that acknowledges the difficulty while also offering hope for brighter days ahead in the new place.

  • “Congratulations on your new home! I hope it will be a great place to make a fresh start.”
  • “Sending good thoughts your way as you get settled in your new place. I know it may take some time, but I’m wishing you every happiness there.”
  • “Congratulations on finding a more accessible place to call home. I hope you’ll be so happy there—and a lot more comfortable, too.”
  • “This must be a tough time to make a move, but I think you made a great choice. Best wishes to you in your new home.”
  • “Wishing you simpler, happier days ahead in your new home!”
  • “Here’s to your new home—may it be a welcome change of scene and a place where you can heal, move forward and be happy.”
  • “It might be hard to think of it as home at first—especially without Tom there to share it with you. But I hope that time brings healing and a feeling of belonging in your new place.”

Warm Closings

A warm closing before your signature adds a nice finishing touch. Choose one of ours, or come up with one of your own.

  • Congratulations,
  • Best wishes,
  • Warmest wishes,
  • Lots of love,
  • Love always,
  • Much love to you,
  • All my/our love,
  • Love and prayers,
  • All the best,
  • Wishing you all the best,
  • Wishing you every blessing,

Helpful Tip: Often a person moving to a new place following a divorce or other hardship will be forced to make the move in a hurry. In those instances, offers of help with lifting heavy stuff, settling in or watching kids are sure to be appreciated. Just be sure to follow through on any offer you make.

Housewarming invitation wording and messages to welcome everyone to your new home

A square housewarming party invitation reads “home sweet home” with a watercolor painting of birds in a birdhouse on a branch with another bird spreading its wings on the roof. Around the card on a wood backdrop are small plates with hors d'oeuvres, a bottle of wine, and a drinking glass

August 10, 2023

Whether it’s your fourth rental in two years or the first home you can truly call your own, finding a new pad is a reason to celebrate. Enter the housewarming party—a chance to welcome new beginnings and new surroundings with the people you love most (and maybe even some new neighbors).

It’s helpful to let your guests know as much as you can about your housewarming party in your invitation. Whether you’re looking for funny invitation wording or a more formal vibe, the right housewarming invitation message makes loved ones and new friends feel right at home for your special occasion.

How to write a housewarming party invitation

A warm, friendly housewarming party invitation sets the tone and sparks excitement for guests who’ll be seeing your place for the first time. No matter the size or theme of your celebration, sending out housewarming party invitations lets your guests know a bit about what to expect, when they should show up, and what they should bring.

As with other kinds of events, your invitation wording for a housewarming party will be a combination of essential details and personal preferences.

Your invitation details should include:

  • Your name: Make your name a focal point for your card to avoid turning the invitation into a scavenger hunt. Choose a font that pops and a color that complements the invitation design.
  • Date and time of the party: Aim to send invitations at least four to six weeks in advance so your guests can plan ahead. Clearly indicate the date and time of the party on the invitations, as well. Feel free to add an end time to avoid any awkwardness when you’re ready to call it a night.
  • Address of your new place : Include your new address and any directions or access details in the Travel Block of your invitation. Consider adding photos or a map, too. With Blocks, all this info will be visible right beneath your invitation.
  • Style of the party: If you’re having an open house, use the words “open house” so guests feel free to drop by whenever. For something more structured, clearly state a beginning and end time on the invitation.
  • RSVPs: To help you plan all aspects of your party, from food and drinks to tours and activities, having a headcount will help you stay on top of things and mentally prepare for the party. Paperless Post’s guest management tools include an RSVP tracker that lets you know in real time who’s coming and who isn’t. It’s also helpful to note whether you’re expecting kids in your headcount to plan for the right amount of food and/or childcare.
  • Gifts or no gifts: Gift-giving is common at housewarming parties but isn’t required. Rather than leaving your guests to wonder what’s expected of them, you can write, “No gifts, please,” on your invitations—or include a Registry Block on your invitation with links to your lists.
  • Other details : If you want to ask for specific gifts, consider hosting a themed party, such as a “bring your favorite houseplant” gathering. If you’ve been too busy moving to do much shopping, ask your guests to bring their favorite meals for a fun potluck instead.
  • Guest questions: Add Guest Questions or Surveys before sending out your invitations to ask everyone you’re inviting about dietary restrictions or their favorite adult beverages.

20 examples of housewarming invitation wording ideas

Now that you have an idea of the information your guests will need, here are some examples of housewarming invitation wording that can help you send out clear, informative invitations for your party.

Casual housewarming invitation wording

It’s a lot of work moving into a new place. Forget the laundry—let your hair down, prop up your feet on the nearest unopened box, and let your guests know about the chill vibe with the right wording on your invitation.

  • Warm and simple invitation

This housewarming invite message is warm and to-the-point:

  • Funny and down-to-earth invitation

Never mind the place, this one is all about the people . If you’re moving into a particularly tiny house and have a good sense of humor, guests will appreciate an honest (yet lighthearted!) blueprint-inspired card.

At last! A place that’s too small to live in and costs more than I can afford.

Won’t you squeeze in, and tell me how great it is?

Formal housewarming invitation wording

If moving took a lot out of you, a shenanigans-free night with hushed conversation and as little chaos as possible may be just the thing you need. A more formal housewarming card message will do a lot to convey the low-key vibe to your lovely guests.

  • Elegant and artsy invitation

Add artistic flair to your housewarming party with a painterly invitation. In deep green with a trail of blush roses, it hints at the garden (or art collection) you’re planning to grow in your new abode.

More housewarming invitation messages

Whether you’re sending housewarming invitations via email, text, or shareable link, sometimes, short and simple wording can get the point across just as easily as a longer message on a card. All that matters is that people show up at the right place at the right time, and know a bit about what they can expect.

Try some of these short-and-sweet messages for a quick invitation to broadcast out to friends and family:

  • Come bless our new home.
  • Come break in our new home (and bar).
  • We would like to celebrate this special moment with our close family and friends. Please come over, and join us for our housewarming ceremony. Lunch will be served.
  • Please join us for a very special Griha Pravesh as we celebrate moving into our new home.
  • We bought a house and can’t wait to fill it with our favorite people! Drop by whenever you can.
  • Bring your favorite dish to help us dish about our new place.

Do you have an upcoming housewarming ceremony to attend at the new home of your loved one?

Buying a new house is one of the biggest achievements in a person’s life, almost like a dream come true. It is the reward of the years of hard work and struggle of a family to own a place which they can proudly call their HOME. This special place is not built with bricks and cement, but with the dreams and aspirations of a family. To bless one’s new home with God’s grace and positivity, a special housewarming ceremony (popularly called as Griha Pravesh in India) is performed by the happy family in the company of their near and dear ones. The ceremony wards off all the negativities from the new home and makes it pious and a happier one.

Share these best Housewarming wishes and messages with your loved ones and communicate your happiness and excitement on this happy and auspicious moment in their lives.
