Wiki Sites: What They Are & How to Create One

Danielle Richardson Ellis

Published: January 24, 2023

Ever heard of a "wiki" and questioned what it is? Suppose having something similar to the renowned Wikipedia - but for your own private use. With just one click, you can create an internal wiki repository where teams can collaborate on research projects, store documents securely, and gain access to all their work in one location.

Business owner creating a wiki

For businesses, big and small alike, wikis have become an indispensable source of centralized information - they've replaced the need for outdated printed employee handbooks or single-time email transfers of style guides.

This blog post will discuss what a wiki is, give some examples of what kinds of information are typically stored in them, and how to create your own.

What is a wiki?

A wiki is an application that allows users to quickly and easily share information. It's a collection of web pages that use simple language and hyperlinks to navigate from one topic to another easily. Wikis are typically used for internal collaborations but can also be used externally for public-facing purposes.

Wikis are highly versatile and can be used for a variety of tasks. Picture it as a go-to place where anyone can look up companywide details. It is like a universal filing system containing all the necessary content that employees should share. They're collaborative, easy to update and maintain, require minimal setup time, and are secure - what more could you want from a digital workspace?

Internal vs. External Wikis

Internal wikis are used by businesses to store and share sensitive information within their organization. On the other hand, external wikis are used for public-facing purposes and can be accessible by anyone.

Internal wikis are great for collaboration among team members, sharing customer feedback, updating business documents, and more. They provide a secure environment where all content can be organized in one central location - what's not to love?

External wikis are perfect for providing information to the public, such as product specifications or support information. They are also ideal for open-source projects and large customer communities.

What can you store in a wiki?

Below is a list of what you can store in an internal wiki:

  • Technical documentation (How-to guides, tutorials, etc.)
  • Meeting notes & minutes
  • Company policies & guidelines
  • Project plans & timelines
  • Reports & analysis
  • Customer service resources (e.g. FAQs)
  • Team contact information & organizational charts News & updates
  • Best practices & procedures
  • Employee handbooks
  • Help desk resources

How to create a wiki?

  • Choose what type of wiki you want to create (internal or external).
  • Pick the platform you're going to use.
  • Set security protocols and community guidelines.
  • Start adding content - make sure to use simple language, visuals, and hyperlinks.
  • Assign roles and permissions for editing access.

1. Choose what type of wiki you want to create (internal or external).

If your goal is to share sensitive, internal information within your organization, an internal wiki is what you should go with. But if you want to create a public-facing wiki that anyone can access, an external wiki is what you need.

2. Pick the platform you're going to use.

There are many software's available for creating a wiki online. To make your choice, consider whether you want an open-source or hosted solution and what functionality you need.

If you’re a large, global company looking for open-source software, then you might opt for MediaWiki , the collaboration and documentation platform powering Wikipedia. But if you’re a smaller business or simply need less bells and whistles, then you might prefer more basic software like DokuWiki , WikiWikiWeb , or Google Sites .

If you’re looking for software that’s easy to use and manage, then you might opt for a premium software like Tettra . With Tetra, you can connect other work management tools like Slack, put users in charge of particular sections of the wiki, and get enhanced search and analytics tools — all without coding. Even those just getting started with website development  can use this tool to set up a wiki in no time.

The 14 Best How-To Sites That Everyone Should Bookmark

Need some help with life's chores and tasks? Here are fourteen of the best how-to sites that everyone needs to bookmark today.

Do you know how to change the oil on your car? What about how to knit a scarf? Or how to make compost?

If you need some help with life's little chores, the internet is full of guidance. But which sites should you head to when you need some advice? Here are 14 how-to sites that everyone needs to have saved in their bookmarks.

wikiHow is a collaborative site that allows anyone to submit an article about a topic of their choosing. And because it's a wiki, other authors can update and amend pieces to make them more accurate and/or complete.

Indeed, according to the site's own literature, the average article is edited by 23 people and then further reviewed by another 16 people.

The list of categories is massive. There are Arts and Entertainment, Philosophy and Religion, Sports and Fitness, Home and Garden, and Finance and Business, to name just a few.

2. Instructables

Instructables is a how-to site with seven categories—Circuits, Workshop, Craft, Cooking, Living, Outside, and Teachers.

Projects on the site have varying degrees of complexity, but there are also varying degrees of “wackiness”. On one end of the scale, there are genuinely useful creations such as outdoor steel fire baskets and kids' games. On the other end, we are not sure how many people really need a polar bear made from scrap metal in their lives.

In terms of content, eHow is similar to wikiHow. The main difference is that eHow has a team of writers rather than being a public wiki.

The site is divided into four main categories. Content includes video tutorials, which you can also catch on the site's YouTube channel.

It's easy to overlook YouTube—it's not something a lot of people think of when considering the best how-to sites on the web.

But if you don't check it out, you're missing out. There are thousands of channels dedicated to every topic imaginable. The trick is to find the right one and then explore its playlist.

Reddit has millions of how-to posts across its Subreddits. However, there's also a Subreddit specifically dedicated to people's how-to requests.

Users post how-to conundrums their facing, and readers chime in with their tips and suggestions. There are no restrictions on the type of advice people can ask for, with the exception of adult entertainment.

A quick scroll through the top posts at the time of writing shows people offering how-to advice on topics as diverse as cleaning sneakers to polishing brass bowls.

6. Acme How To

Acme How To (which thankfully has no connection to Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote!) is a DIY-focused how-to website. Broadly speaking, the content is split into three categories: Improvements, Repairs, and Decorate.

Just about every conceivable aspect of home DIY has its own subsection. For example, you can use Acme How To to learn how to grout, paint, lay a floor, control pests, and a whole lot more.

The site also has a small review section to make sure you're buying the best tools for the job.

7. How a Car Works

Cars can be confusing. And more importantly, they can also be extremely expensive to maintain.

But it doesn't have to be that way. If you spend some time doing a spot of self-learning, you can save yourself a fortune and have some fun at the same time.

If you're looking for a how-to site for autos, check out How a Car Works. The site is part-explanations, part-guides. All the information is categorized into subsections such as Brakes, Electrical, Fuel, Steering, Suspension, and other car-themed topics. Many of the video how-to guides require payment.

8. HomeTips

If you want to give your home a makeover, you should check out HomeTips. It specializes in how-to content for issues around your property.

The categories on the site are Appliances, Heat/Cool, Exterior, Interior, Plumbing, Tech and Electric, and Yard. Each section is packed with dozens of how-to articles, with titles as diverse as “How to Install a Bathroom Sink”, “How to Improve Curb Appeal”, and “How to Build a Lean-To Shed”.

9. HowToDoThings

If you're looking for how-to articles about as wide a range of topics as possible, HowToDoThings is probably the site for you.

There are nine primary categories to browse . They are Automotive, Business, Education, Family and Relationships, Food and Drink, Health and Fitness, Pets and Animals, Sport and Recreation, and Travel.

Each of the primary categories has several sub-categories for you to dig into. It means that on the same site, you will find articles such as how to stretch before a dance class and how to get a housing grant for a first-time buyer.

10. Hackr.io

Rather than publishing its own content, Hackr.io is a repo of how-to articles that have been bookmarked from other sites. As the name suggests, all the content is geared towards programming and coding.

You'll find tutorials and how-to guides for subjects such as Python, C++, PHP, Google Analytics, Alexa, and even Bitcoin.

Users can submit new content; the site deploys an upvote and downvote system that's similar to Reddit.

11. OneHowTo

OneHowTo is another fantastic how-to website. There are 14 categories covering topics such as cars, leisure, education, sport, beauty, and art.

We love the diversity of how-to articles on OneHowTo. It offers articles that you are unlikely to find on other how-to sites, such as “How to Use Potassium Soap for Plants” and “How to Tell if a Santa Claus Melon Is Ripe”.

Some of the content is provided in a step-by-step format, whereas some is written as a regular article.

12. Well and Good

When it comes to getting fit and in shape, a lot of people do not have a clue where to start. Sure, you know that you should exercise more and eat less, but there is much more to it than that.

Out of all the fitness sites out there, we especially like Well and Good. It offers tips and how-to guides for skincare, food and nutrition, and general fitness. There is also a cookbook, studio sessions, and talks and podcasts.

13. Taste of Home

One of the best how-to sites for cooking is Taste of Home. It offers recipes and cooking guidance across numerous cooking categories, and also includes dedicated sections for holidays and events, as well as healthy food.

We'll end with a bit of shameless self-promotion. If you need to know how to do anything in the tech world, MUO should be your first port of call. We've published how-to articles on everything from Android Auto to Tinder.

We think we're the best, and we're confident you'll agree if you spend a bit of time digging through our content.

The Best How-to Sites

The 14 sites we've listed cover a broad range of topics and hobbies, but we know our selections are nowhere near exhaustive.

The bottom line is that regardless of what project or activity you need help with, you are sure to be able to find all the help and resources you need somewhere on the web.

On This Saturday Night, Colin Jost’s Jokes Fell Flat

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has occasionally featured some great stand-up comedy. This “S.N.L.” veteran’s set will not join that list.

Comedian Colin Jost stands at a podium, speaking to an audience while holding his left hand in the air, index finger raised. President Biden sits at a table, to the comedian’s right.

By Jason Zinoman

People in the media have long worried about the impact of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on journalism. The concern is that it makes the press look too chummy with politicians it’s covering. But what is the impact on comedy?

A high-ceilinged hotel ballroom filled with television anchors and network executives is a tough room for stand-up, but no more so than an awards show. Trevor Noah was funnier two years ago at the dinner than he was at this year’s Grammys.

A murderer’s row of comics, among them Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Wanda Sykes, has taken this assignment because it’s one of the most high-profile live comedy sets of the year. And there has been one truly great performance ( Stephen Colbert ), some very good ones ( Seth Meyers , Larry Wilmore ) and one so thrillingly biting ( Michelle Wolf ) that the next year they replaced the comic with a historian.

Colin Jost’s set this year does not belong in that pantheon. Without his Weekend Update partner Michael Che next to him, he came off muted, vanilla, less assured than usual. With long pauses between jokes, eyes darting side to side, he occasionally took a drink of water and at least once acknowledged the lack of laughter in the room. His jokes leaned on wordplay more than a specific or novel perspective. “Some incredible news organizations here,” began one of his pricklier jokes, finished by: “Also, some credible ones.”

He focused much fire on former President Donald J. Trump. “Now that O.J.’s dead, who is the front-runner for V.P.?” he asked. “Diddy?” Like Biden, Jost has always benefited from low expectations. No one that handsome could be funny, right? But he has grown into his role at “Saturday Night Live,” proving to be an especially strong straight man adept at the comedy of embarrassment. You could see his timing in one of the odder moments when he said Robert Kennedy Jr. could be the third Catholic president and the C-SPAN camera cut to President Biden (the second) clapping. Jost retreated on Kennedy’s chances one beat later: “Like his vaccine card says, he doesn’t have a shot.”

For the third year in a row, President’s Biden’s age played a big role in the comedy (“Technology wasn’t invented when he was in high school,” Jost said of Biden), even in the president’s own set. Two years ago, Biden joked that he was friends with Calvin Coolidge. Last year, he referred to his “pal Jimmy Madison.” The president took a slightly different and more confrontational approach this time. “Age is an issue,” he said early. “I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.”

Can jokes help defuse the issue? They don’t hurt. Ronald Reagan handled concerns about his age with humor, joking at one dinner that he was around when the wheel was invented. People tend to overestimate the power of jokes from comedians and underestimate them from politicians. Both Trump and former President Barack Obama forged bonds with their voters through their senses of humor. Biden is not as funny as his two predecessors, but his joking asides have a loose, towel-snapping warmth that is a key part of his appeal. It’s why appearing on Howard Stern this past week was such a smart move, as unimaginable as that would have been several decades ago.

Trump never showed up to the correspondents’ dinner during his time in the White House, and his inability to laugh at himself represents a vulnerability. President Biden often seems to be trying to bait him with mockery (he called him “Sleepy Don”) and makes a pretty convincing show of enjoying being made fun of. Of course, it helps that the comics at his dinners, Noah and Roy Wood Jr., only gently roasted him. But their performances were Bill Hicks polemics compared to the jokes by Jost.

Jost’s strongest moment came at the end when he paid emotional tribute to his grandfather — a firefighter and Biden supporter who died recently — and then championed the virtues of decency. This earnest argument would have fit in a political convention or a civics class but was unusual to hear in this setting. Wholesome sincerity from a stand-up comic can be more chilling than any transgressive joke. But we live in scary times. Early on, Jost said he was honored to be here at what was likely to be, “judging by the swing state polls, the last White House Correspondents’ Dinner.”

In a recent podcast interview with The New York Times, Roy Wood Jr. told Astead W. Herndon that the correspondents’ dinner job was “one of the singular events in stand-up comedy that is truly reflective of where we are as a country at that exact moment.”

If so, the mood of the nation landed as nervous.

An earlier version of this column incorrectly mentioned two renowned comics as having entertained at past White House Correspondents’ Association dinners. Neither George Carlin nor Richard Pryor ever appeared, although in 1968, another Richard Pryor, known as “Cactus,” a Texas raconteur, did perform.

Inside the World of Comedy

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has occasionally featured some great stand-up comedy. Colin Jost’s set will not join that list, our critic writes .

The pandemic dealt a major blow to improv in New York, but a new energy can be seen in performances throughout the city .

Kevin Hart became the 25th comic  to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor from the Kennedy Center.

The joke writers for awards shows are a corner of the showbiz work force that tends to remain in the shadows. The job requires skill, self-awareness and even diplomacy .

Comedians, no strangers to tackling difficult and taboo subjects with humor, are increasingly turning their attention to the climate crisis .

House passes antisemitism bill with broad bipartisan support amid campus arrests

Image: Speaker of the House Mike Johnson

The House passed a bipartisan bill Wednesday to combat antisemitism as pro-Palestinian protests roil colleges across the U.S.

The measure passed 320-91. Twenty-one Republicans and 70 Democrats voted against it.

The bill, titled the Antisemitism Awareness Act , would mandate that the Education Department adopt the broad definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, an intergovernmental group, to enforce anti-discrimination laws.

The international group defines antisemitism as a "certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews." The group adds that "rhetorical and physical manifestations" of antisemitism include such things as calling for the killing or harming of Jews or holding Jews collectively responsible for actions taken by Israel.

The bill's prospects in the Senate are unclear.

Asked whether the Senate would take up the legislation, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters earlier Wednesday that "we haven't seen what the House is sending us yet."

Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., introduced the bipartisan legislation, which received backing from Democratic moderates who are supporters of Israel amid the country’s war with Hamas.

“In every generation, the Jewish people have been scapegoated, harassed, evicted from their homeland and murdered,” Lawler said in a floor speech before the vote.

"The Jewish people need our support now," he said. "They need action now."

Republicans are seeking to launch investigations into antisemitism on college campuses in response to the pro-Palestinian protests. The current version of the legislation was introduced in late October after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel but not brought to the floor until this week.

“When I spoke at Columbia last week, I told administrators that we need deeds, not words, to protect Jewish students,” Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., a co-author of the legislation, said in a statement Wednesday. “This bill is a critical step to take the action we so desperately need to stand against hate.”

In a letter Monday to House Speaker Mike Johnson , R-La., Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., wrote that “there is nothing scheduled on the floor this week that would accomplish the concrete, thoughtful strategies outlined by the Biden administration” to combat antisemitism.

Jeffries had demanded a vote on the bipartisan Countering Antisemitism Act , which aims to address concerns about rising antisemitism through the appointment of a new adviser to the president who would be dedicated to implementing its coordinated strategy to counter antisemitism.

“The effort to crush antisemitism and hatred in any form is not a Democratic or Republican issue,” Jeffries wrote. “It’s an American issue that must be addressed in a bipartisan manner with the fierce urgency of now.”

Lawler's bill faced opposition from some progressive and far-right lawmakers, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union, which called the bill's definition of antisemitism "overbroad."

"Speech that is critical of Israel or any other government cannot, alone, constitute harassment," ACLU leaders wrote in a letter last week urging lawmakers to oppose the measure.

The letter pointed in part to an example of antisemitism included in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition, which says antisemitism could include "denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor."

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, voted against the bill after having told reporters Tuesday that Republicans were weaponizing antisemitism.

“We all have to continue to speak out against antisemitism and be clear that we don’t like — we will not tolerate antisemitism any more than we tolerate Islamophobia or any of the other hatreds and discriminations that are out there,” she said.

Jayapal also argued that the bill “has a definition that is so broad” that many Jewish groups do not support it.

“So why would you do that? Except if you want to weaponize antisemitism and you want to use it as a political ploy,” she said. “Let’s remember that many of these Republicans didn’t say a word when Donald Trump and others in Charlottesville, other places, were saying truly antisemitic things.”

Trump, as president, sparked a backlash when he suggested that "many sides" were to blame for the deadly violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, declining to single out white nationalists.

Separately, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., said that the definition was so broad that it would threaten constitutionally protected free speech. He, too, voted against the bill.

Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., said in a statement after she voted against it that while she has "experienced antisemitism all my life," the bill "would stifle First Amendment rights to free speech and free assembly."

Jacobs also said she does not believe that anti-Zionism is "inherently antisemitism," saying that "conflating free speech and hate crimes will not make Jewish students any safer."

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., voted against the bill because of a disagreement with an example of antisemitism listed in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition, which referred to using "symbols and images" such as "claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel" to describe Israel or Israelis.

Greene argued on X that the bill "could convict Christians of antisemitism for believing the gospel that says Jesus was handed over" for crucifixion with involvement of some Jewish authorities, including Herod.

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., voted against the bill for similar reasons, pointing to the same example of antisemitism, which many Jews consider harmful.

"The Bible is clear," he wrote on X . "There is no myth or controversy around this."

Activists working to counter antisemitism have pointed out that Jews have been scapegoated throughout history for events including the crucifixion of Jesus and that such claims have been used to justify violence against Jews.
