Reminiscing About Inter-house Sports Day – By Efe Remawa

The value of sports for health, wellbeing, team spirit, scholarship opportunities, fostering unity, sense of purpose should not be overlooked.

Secondary schools pupils during an Inter-house sports event / Photo credit: The Guardian

Inter-house sports day (“sports day”) is when primary and secondary schools host their annual sports competition in Nigeria.

In many schools, students are grouped into houses for planning, organisation and the actual competition. Usually, sports day is held in the second term of the school session.

I attended one recently.

It brought back memories of my school days. I attended a “unity school”.

I noticed some similarities and of course, differences.

I recall that the sports day term was a big deal for athletes and non-athletes.

It was exciting, filled with house loyalties and the spirit of competition.

On resumption, sports practice was intensive.

Lots of track and field events to participate in.

Day students stayed behind after school for practice and sometimes slept over in school.

It brought changes to the normal school routines.

The athletes were stars/heroes during the term.

As the term progressed, it became clear who the main contenders were.

Practice was taken seriously before the best were selected for each event.

Heats lasted for about 2 days.

The finals of some events took place during the heats, while the more exciting events like the 100m, 4 x 100 relay, took place on sports day.

Sports day felt like a celebration.

Parents, dignitaries, other schools were invited to compete also in an event called “invitation relay”.

Even the non-athletes like me were not left out.

We wanted our houses to excel.

We tried in our own way to make the day fun and colourful.

We were glad to see our parents, guardians, siblings and friends from other schools.

Fast forward to 2024!

The sports day I recently attended at a private school was similar in certain aspects.

The students were dressed in the colours of their respective houses.

I was impressed that the school band provided the music for most of the event.

The school band played exceptionally well.

There was no need to invite a band. Drums, trumpets, keyboards, flutes etc.

In my time, a band usually was invited to provide music for the day particularly the march past.

However, the march past left much to be desired.

Some children “walked or strolled past”, some did not know their left from right.

If children are not taught to march properly, then an athletes’ parade would be more befitting.

Just like at the opening ceremony of sports events like the Olympics.

I noticed the turnout of students was low and found out that some day students chose not to attend.

In my time, you missed sports day because you were very ill. Nothing else could stop you.

Parents were quite excited, very involved and eager.

Parents of each house sat together and cheered vigorously.

Wearing colours of their children’s/ward’s respective houses.

Our parents were more formal, reserved and certainly did not wear our house shirts.

It was nice to see the tradition of staff and parents’ races were still in vogue.

However, there seemed to be quite a lot of injuries.

The school’s medical team was so busy.

Too many students were carried off on stretchers.

I was informed that the use of stretchers in previous years was worse.

I noticed a parent who was so anxious about her child getting injured she could barely cheer him as he ran his race.

I understood why when I found out that sports practice started less than a week before.

Any random and willing student was selected to represent their house.

This explained why many students sustained injuries as they had not trained and practiced enough.

The sports arena was well built and allowed spectators a good view of the entire field and tracks.

Watching the track events was fun, though it was obvious that some students were unfamiliar with basic athletic rules like not crossing lanes.

Some lanes were not properly measured allowing for undue advantage to some runners.

Some races had to be cancelled and done over because of these errors.

The importance of fair play in sports must never be overlooked.

Schools with adequate sports arenas or facilities should utilise them well.

The day was still an exciting day.

We cheered the athletes for their effort and courage despite the lack of preparation.

Is it pointless to compare sports day activities then and now?

I acknowledge that there are some differences: like one being government-owned while the other is a private school.

There is also the fact that my recollections are from childhood.

Can an event in the mid 1980’s -1990’s be compared with one in 2024?

Also, the challenges faced in managing a school would be different.

However, the objectives of inter-house sports competition then and now have not changed.

Some of which are learning important life skills like discipline, leadership, team spirit, fostering a sense of unity etc.

Since what is worth doing, is worth doing well, efforts should be made for the sports day to be taken more seriously.

I believe that there are many proprietors and teachers that are alumni of unity schools.

I wonder if their recollections are similar to mine.

Schools should reach out to parents who have expertise in certain sporting activities.

Not just for sports day but more importantly for the invaluable life skills that can be learned.

Inter-house sports day: results, records, & media memories.

Inter-House Sports Day – view the full Flickr photo collection

Thursday 10 February 2022: This year’s edition of the Inter-House Sports Day saw a return to full school and spectator support after the Covid-19 restrictions of 2021. A magnificent day of spirited competition in the annual chase for house points toward the Friedlander Shield competition brought new records and old traditions to the Silverhurst Fields – from the Littlewood House march to start the event to the staff vs students relay at the end. All under a clear, summer sky in perfect wind-free conditions.

Thanks to all staff for their assistance on the day, families and friends for joining in support, and well done to all athletes. View the full collection of photo memories on our Flickr channel .

Vice-Principal, Mr Cliff Hull, wrote in the weekly newsletter of Friday 11 February :

Our Inter-house Sports Day, a flagship event on our school calendar. Aside from the sparkling performances themselves, it was another priceless opportunity for our boys to forge memories and to continue to build lasting relationships amongst each other, albeit under the guise of healthy inter-house rivalry. Whilst the sporting life of the school has flourished, we eagerly await the return of our fully-fledged cultural and service programme within the next couple of weeks. Please do stay tuned to these pages as these pillars flicker, and hopefully explode, into life.

The Inter House Sport: Creating Good Memories

essay about my last inter house sport

So, I left home for the sport's day, I believe November 2007, I was in the green-house, Abubakr House, and I have always been in the green-house since I  started secondary school at Ansar-ud-deen Comprehensive college, whereas, in the primary school of the same name, I was in Red House, Ali House throughout and we always came last.

But I came that day fully dressed and aware that it would be my last one.

This is a story that I have always kept with me, always at the back of my head, a memory neatly tucked away, and I didn't think that I would share or would need to write this until I was on my Facebook looking at some pictures, and I couldn't help but remember the times and I got emotional enough to cry.

It was the first semester out of the three-semester in high schools, or at least in Nigeria, I had some money with me, and I also had my hijab on. Earlier and before the end of the year, my junior classes English teacher had asked us to participate in a traditional event for the end of year program; but we are in SS1, Senior Secondary School One, and we were excited, and so, my friends and I decided that we wouldn't participate that year, or so I thought. And besides, I had got hit by a motorbike while running the country race during that inter-house sports year (2007). So, even if I wanted to, I wouldn't have had the energy to.

Yes, I was so determined to have participated in the country-race that happens every year, every inter-house sport before I leave Nigeria. It was like a dream of mine, I want to participate in the country race before I leave my home country, even if it is just one. But, the first time I registered and tried, I got into an accident. The guy had hit me from the back- and I would have hit the rock in front of me, if not luck. It would have been a-hit-and-run if not the people that stopped him, and they were going to fight him that day as he kept dining that it was my fault. Thank God for the people there, in truth, how could I have seen him coming behind me? Despite my attempts to continue, I was stopped, and treated- and then my P.E teacher took me back to the school, and then, I went to the hospital near my school. My friend had a good laugh at this- she did warn me.

Anyways- I did participate, the dream was fulfilled, I just was not able to complete the race.

During the first semester of the senior year, November, and in a month's time, we would be completing our first exam for senior class 1. Mind you, this exam's score determines which department we would ultimately end in. I wanted science like any other student, and you need a good aggregate to end up in the science department, but just as well Commerce, and Art. Although, art is greatly looked down up. A department that I also love very much, and I am optimistic about the discussion on the Arts in general.

So, my friends and I decided that we are going to take a lot of pictures, though mindfully, I have other plans for the pictures, as these pictures would later become accounts of stored memories, and good remembrance of my time in Nigeria.

Over years, I would come to realize or wish that I have collected many and taken a lot more pictures with my friends, but bear with me, I was about 13 then, still as shy as anything, and I do not interact a lot with the lads in our classes, or rather I do not interact with any of then. But the girls, we are 70-100% friends. So, my friends and I took some pictures, we watched some games and left the venue.

Earlier during the day, there were lots of vendors selling sweets, food, street foods, and all at the venue. I had remembered two of them, one was selling shea fruits and the other was selling cashew fruits. I thought that I would take the shea because the cashew might ruin my clothes, but on the other hand, the cashew had already been sliced and so, I need not worry about the juice getting on my clothes. Later, and I mean years later, when I reflect on this day, I would come to attach some meanings to why I haven't chosen the shea fruit (because it is emi),  if you're familiar with Yoruba words and marking, ( emi) in another tone can mean life.

But I took some photos and I believe I have only taken two or one (60 nairas each). And most of the pictures that I would have with my friends would be last-minute ones. Like I said, I was just becoming of age, young, ready, very responsible with how I spent money. And to be honest, I was distressed, scared for the next three years to come, which school I would go to? And the exams, NECO, WAEC, JAMB, and others. And though, I have always liked Uni-Ife. I was about thirteen or almost, and my thoughts were far off. I probably developed anxiety at the moment about the years to come.

I would come to realize so many things after this day, because after the exam, and we started the second semester, whereby I chose Science to be my line of the department, and two months in to be exact, I came to Canada. And that was among the first shock I would come to accept. The departure from everything I have ever known, all the plans I have planned with friends and all. The suddenness of it. Though, many would have you believe that abroad is life- yes, it is life, but it also come with challenges, trials and many laughter- so, it is just as well, a home. At the age, I could say that I was uncertain, and possibly, my friends, skeptical. But, was I ready for the journey? I am still confirming, emerging, and reemerging every day. It was a heck of a journey to be here and to be composed enough to write this.

But I am a writer, I write in order to calm myself, give myself a little therapy on life, reflections, and where I am headed to.

essay about my last inter house sport

I posted the picture I had in November 2007 on Facebook earlier this year; and weirdly enough, about seven years after moving to Canada, and around the same month or time, I had another picture (though with a little less action and efizzy) like the 2007's; although, this time, with a new friend that I made. And it was another culture shock. I put the two side by side to see how far I have come, and how I have survived and exist consciously in both worlds. Nostalgia!

I know that I have been smiling in the picture, but I had also been crying at how close, how short life is

Before I left Nigeria, my friends would say, "keep at home, and remember the child of whom you are!" And I believe that so far, I have kept intact, and fulfilled their bargains.

This year’s inter-house sports competition was one with a difference as students, staff members, parents, invited guest as well as our online audience once again enjoyed this electrifying event filled with palpable excitement.

essay about my last inter house sport

Below is the essay.

Explanation:

My School interhouse sport is always interesting because their is always a competition or the different houses are always eager to make their houses win but it was left for the officials to decide on who the winning team is.

My school has four houses namely: yellow house, green house, red house, and blue house.

During practise, each houses are excepted to find students who are capable of doing the following:run, match, throw javelin and discuss and train them very well for the heat and the day of the inter house sport competition. The practise and heat was just the beginning of the interhouse sport.

After all houses where ready,we started the heat, when all houses where to train together. It all started from the throwing of javelin and discuss. Yellow house took last follow by other houses.I was terrified when i had my house took last,it was a shocking thing to me. It was followed with the running competition which green house took first followed by yellow house, red house and blue house. I was surprised that green house that took last in the last inter house sport took first in heat, then i said to myself that lets wait to the real interhouse sport.

The real day came (the inter house sport).I was so happy, saying to myself we shall know who will win today (on friday :27 of feb.2015), but on that day rain fell so we could not start at the exact time,we had to wait till 2:30 pm and started at 3:00pm. It was an interesting day.
