Applying for a phd programme at wageningen university.

wageningen university phd scholarship 2023

Applying for a PhD programme at WUR can be a tad confusing. At least it was for me when I started reading about it. There are many ways of becoming part of this high-ranked university and research institution. But that only means there are many opportunities to be part of significant research around the world!

The four-year PhD programmes at Wageningen University & Research mainly consist of conducting research and writing a final dissertation. It is also possible to spend 10% of the time on teaching and up to 15% of the time on training,  participating in courses, competence and skills training, seminars, conferences and workshops.

In this blog, I will introduce you to the basic steps of applying for a PhD programme at Wageningen University & Research.

The first thing you need to know is that there different types of PhD candidates:

a. Employed candidates.

Graduate schools recruit research assistants through vacancy announcements and interviews. You can find an overview of current research assistant vacancies on the PhD vacancies page . These PhD candidates have an employment contract with Wageningen University. The candidates have four to five-year temporary contracts for a trajectory directed to a PhD graduation. They do not need to pay a tuition fee. They actually get paid for doing their PhD (getting paid for researching? Count me in!). WUR also has research employees who do not yet have a PhD. In this case, arrangements are made designed to help them complete a doctoral research project.

b. Scholarship candidates.

Scholarship PhD candidates have received a fellowship without an employment contract. These include PhD candidates in a sandwich construction who are not employed by an institute in their home country. By sandwich construction, WUR means that these PhD candidates have a home institute which takes care of funding. However, it goes beyond funding. The aim of the Sandwich PhD Programme is capacity building, building international scientific networks, facilitating exchange and reinforcing the knowledge basis of their PhD candidates’ home institution. If you would like to know more about these programmes click on this link .

c. Externally financed candidates.

These PhD candidates are employed by an institute/organization other than WUR. The main relation with WUR is via the supervisors. They can be PhD candidates appointed at an external research institute or employees appointed at an external research institute, with the possibility to follow a PhD trajectory in addition to the regular tasks connected to the employment contract.

d. External candidates

External PhD candidates do not have any funding or employment contracts with a research institute. These candidates do their research on their own time. And just like the externally financed candidates, the main relation with WUR is via the supervisors.

As you may have guessed by now, each type of candidacy has its own timeline. The differences rely on the type of funding, the kind of research you would like to pursue, as well as your geographical location. However, there is a basic process to follow for applying to the PhD programme at WUR:

  • Orientation: thoroughly read the information about the PhD programme.
  • Applying: a. Reply on a PhD vacancy application. Just like applying to any other job, you can reply to PhD vacancies at WUR. Each vacancy has a detailed description of the research and the supervisors. You can find vacant positions here . b. Approach a Graduate School. WUR has six Graduate Schools, that have three main tasks: to coordinate, develop and facilitate doctoral education and training; to stimulate and coordinate the development of a coherent research programme within the mission of the graduate school; and to safeguard, monitor and stimulate the quality and progress of research by staff, postdocs and PhD candidates. You can find more information about the graduate schools on this page .
  • First evaluation: if the application meets the Graduate School’s requirements and conditions, the committee will send it to a supervisor for further evaluation.
  • Second evaluation: during this second evaluation, the supervisor will evaluate the candidate using specific criteria which you can find here . Afterwards, the supervisor has to consult an HR advisor in order to check that fellowship finances some from outside WUR.
  • Registration:The Chair Group informs the Graduate School about the intended registration of the PhD candidate. The graduate school opens registration in Hora Finita and the PhD candidate is in charge of uploading the required documents.
  • Admission: the PhD candidate signs the contract or employment agreement with the department, and the tuition fees are paid when required. The PhD candidate has an introduction meeting with the Graduate School. If the PhD candidate needs to take courses at a BSc or MSc level, the Graduate School must register the candidate as a student.

As they say “good things take time”, WUR may take some weeks to respond, as Wageningen receives many PhD applications. If you want to know more details about applying, the specific requirements and the timeline of the PhD programme at WUR, you can find it at the Overview of Procedures along a timeline .

PhD scholarship recipient to research strategies to help improve staff wellbeing

wageningen university phd scholarship 2023

Not only does she have two bachelor degrees and an MBA, she’s now the inaugural recipient of a co-funded Victoria University (VU) and Western Health Nursing and Midwifery Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) scholarship.

Starting at VU this year, Valentina’s PhD topic will focus on how coaching with integrative medicine principles can improve the wellbeing and performance of graduate clinicians, helping them achieve lasting and fulfilling careers.

Valentina says that healthcare workers are at higher risk of burnout – a type of stress linked to work that can lead to workers feeling exhausted and unmotivated, with some leaving the profession as a result.

"Many clinicians share similar concerns such as burnout, heavy workloads, rapidly changing environments, workforce and resource shortages, and their ability to deliver appropriate patient care.

“My research will focus on how a broad range of health concepts – some from conventional medicine and others complementary therapies – might be helpful in managing stress and preventing burnout,” Valentina says.

Valentina believes that most people know what’s good for them – physical activity, healthy eating, being social, setting boundaries – but it can be hard to put into practice.

As a qualified life coach, she’s interested in how one-on-one or group coaching – complete with action plans and regular check ins – might be effective in making lasting changes.

“With wellbeing, information is one thing but application is another. Through coaching, you can personalise approaches, provide support and be an external motivation that can help people reach and maintain their goals,” Valentina says.

Currently working as Manager, Procurement, Clinical and Business Support at Western Health, Valentina loves continual learning, whether it’s further study or pursuing different career pathways.

Continual learning pushes me forward and helps me focus. It feeds my curiosity and I love being able to share new knowledge to improve individuals, health practices or the systems we work in.

“Through my PhD research, I hope to be able to contribute to improved conditions for those entering into clinical professions, ensuring they have every opportunity to have successful and impactful careers,” Valentina says.

She is looking forward to working with Dr Gina Kruger and Dr Susan Irvine from VU Nursing and Midwifery and representing Western Health Nursing and Midwifery, led by Executive Director Adjunct Professor Shane Crowe.

This inaugural   PhD scholarship   demonstrates the strong collaboration between Victoria University and Western Health, celebrating a shared commitment to excellence in education, research and patient care. The scholarship will financially support a Western Health nurse or midwife to undertake their PhD and will be offered every two years.

The Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy is offering multiple funding opportunities for creatives in the Vanderbilt community. Available to graduate students across disciplines, the Curb Public Scholars Program provides a two-year grant of $2,500 for public-facing creative projects, while the Creative Inquiry Grant Program awards various levels of funding ranging from $500 to $2,500 and is open to undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff. Both applications are now open.

Public Scholars Program

The Public Scholars Program for Vanderbilt graduate students is now accepting applications for the 2024–25 cohort after a yearlong hiatus. Public Scholars supported by the Curb Center will receive a two-year grant of $2,500 and access to Curb space, materials and equipment to support them as they implement a public-facing project with a creative focus.

The Public Scholars Program has been fortunate to support several outstanding projects since its inception. One such project is the Open Book Collective , an organization run by and for first-generation/low-income students. Open Book Collective began as a Public Scholar project spearheaded by Kelly Cunningham, a former graduate student in philosophy, and has featured creative projects by FGLI students, built innovative mentorship structures for undergraduates, graduate students and faculty, and blossomed into a thriving student organization now led by Erica Scarpitti, Ph.D. candidate in earth and environmental sciences. “The success of the Open Book Collective and its importance for first-generation low-income students demonstrate how the Public Scholars Program enables graduate students to make a lasting impact on the Vanderbilt community,” Curb Center Director Leah Lowe said. “We are eager to support a new cohort of Public Scholars as they continue to develop and implement creative projects with public-facing impact.”

Applicants to the Public Scholars Program must have completed at least one year of their degree and have at least two years remaining, have their adviser’s approval, a concept that can be planned and executed by April 2026, and be available for three group meetings and one individual meeting per semester. The Curb Center will provide support during the scholars’ second year for their work to be presented at a conference. An information session for interested applicants will be held at the Curb Center on Friday, Aug. 30 . Interested students may view the call for applications to the 2024–26 cohort online.

Creative Inquiry Grants

The Curb Center awards Creative Inquiry Grants to support Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff as they engage in arts-based inquiry and action on Vanderbilt’s campus and in the local community. The Curb Center has supported more than 100 projects with Creative Inquiry Grants throughout the program’s history. Last year’s projects included ayu: A Narrative Medicine Journal, which publishes creative work written by unhoused individuals and those who offer medical care; the “Cupid” short film , a student project spearheaded by executive producer Benedict Ballman that became an official selection for the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, where it won the Audience Choice Award, and the Nashville Film Festival; and “Dueling With Death,” Leah Lomotey-Nakon’s mixed-media series highlighting the lived experiences of birth workers and the communities they serve.

The Curb Center is committed to offering vital support to creative projects that position art as a mode of inquiry into issues facing Vanderbilt and local communities. Creative Inquiry Grant applications for projects that will be completed in the 2024–25 academic year are now open.

If you have any questions about funding opportunities at the Curb Center, please contact Rachel Thompson .

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Genetic analysis of recombination events and their contribution to genetic variance

Individuals differ in the number of crossovers that they transmit to their offspring, and the crossover count is at least partly heritable. It is well known that crossovers contribute to genetic variation that is exploited in selection in species that reproduce sexually. This contribution is, however, not yet quantified. The CrossOver project aims to empirically quantify this contribution based on data from pigs. In order to do this, models will be developed and validated within the project.

Application Deadline: 7 June 2023

10 best platforms to create and sell online courses, 5. fully funded phd position in understanding pan-fungicide resistance in the airborne human fungal pathogen aspergillus fumigatus.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a human pathogenic fungus causing serious life-threatening diseases. Antifungal resistance against the azole class is rapidly spreading on a global scale and hampering effective treatment of patients. A. fumigatus isolates from patients have not only acquired azole resistance but also resistance to other agricultural fungicides. Recent analysis shows that multiple genes are involved in this pan-fungicide resistance, and these variants may have unforeseen impact on various aspects of the biology of this fungus.

Application Deadline: 23 June 2023

Get professional job ready & in-demand career certificates, 9. fully funded phd position in reverse stress testing.

The Operations Research and Logistics group of Wageningen University is hiring a PhD candidate (4 years, full-time employment) to support the development of a new methodology for managing supply chain risks based on stress testing methods. So far, the management of risks in supply chains has mainly relied on the identification and classification of supply chain risks based on impact and probability of occurrence. Unfortunately, it turns out that often risks are very difficult to predict and that one may need to analyze many (often irrelevant) scenarios.

Application Deadline: May 31 2023

Top 10 free statistical analysis software, 10. fully funded phd position in urban greening and health.

The project will focus on the study of the relationships between objective health data and green area availability where people live, and on the health benefits that can be expected by greening residential neighbourhoods, to identify what type of nature reduces stress best in real-life settings. The goals of the project are to study the extent to which socioeconomic health disparities may be reduced by making optimal use of the stress-reducing qualities of contact with nature, and to study which types of nature are most effective in this regard for people with a low socioeconomic status.

Application Deadline: 5 June 2023

Looking for funded scholarships programs click here, 11. 07 fully funded phd position in soil chemistry for the soilpros project.

In the SoilProS project, 7 PhD candidates, one Postdoc and three technicians at 6 institutes (WUR, UvA, NIOO, UT, UU and HAS) will closely work together within the fields of soil biodiversity, soil chemistry, microbial ecology and artificial intelligence (AI) supported by a broad range of stakeholders from governmental bodies to various companies in the agricultural sector. 10 Best Plagiarism Checkers Software

13. fully funded phd position in designing sustainable waste conversion value chains using decision support models.

The PhD project will focus on network design, specifically addressing important strategic decisions related to the choice of waste streams in combination with the selection of waste-conversion pathways; location and scale of conversion facilities; as well as the portfolio of valorized products. Methods based on multi-objective optimization, process simulation and sustainability assessment will be used to address challenges related to scale of analysis (from unit operation to supply chain), conflicts between sustainability indicators and waste stream variability. A major challenge of this PhD research is dealing with the various scales from unit operation level to supply chain, by exploring the use of methods based on multi-objective optimization, process simulation and sustainability assessment.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in machine learning-based prediction of protein-protein interactions

Biological processes are controlled by transcription factor proteins (TFs), which interact in many different combinations to regulate gene expression. However, it is still largely unclear how the specificity of protein-protein interactions is encoded in protein sequence and structure and how this determines which combinations of proteins with unique functions can be formed. Ultimately, this knowledge is important to steer and control biological processes, and investigate for example the cause of human diseases or govern modern plant breeding approaches.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Elucidating specificity determination in plant transcription factor complex formation

In the framework of the NWO-M2 project ‘Machine learning-based prediction of transcription factor protein-protein interactions’, two PhD candidates will collaborate to develop a robust computational method to predict protein-protein interactions of TFs with complex evolutionary histories. The method will be developed based on the MADS-domain transcription factor family, which regulates important plant processes such as flowering and fruit development. One of the PhD candidates will work in the Bioinformatics department on the development of the computational prediction method.

This initiative offers students an incredible opportunity to pursue advanced studies in renewable agriculture while contributing to global efforts in sustainable development.

About Wageningen University

Wageningen University, known for its research-driven curriculum and strong commitment to sustainability, is one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of life sciences. Situated in the heart of the Netherlands, the university provides an environment that nurtures innovation and critical thinking.

A Global Leader in Sustainable Agriculture

Students benefit from cutting-edge research facilities and the expertise of leading scientists, giving them the tools and knowledge to make significant contributions to their fields. The €5,000 Renewable Agriculture Scholarship reinforces the university’s dedication to fostering global talents who are keen to address environmental challenges.

Why Study Renewable Agriculture?

Renewable agriculture involves practices that prioritize sustainable farming techniques, soil health, biodiversity, and the responsible use of resources. By studying renewable agriculture, students become equipped with the skills needed to implement practices that can make food systems more resilient. This scholarship offers a platform for passionate individuals to make meaningful changes while advancing their academic and professional careers.

The Host Country: The Netherlands

The Netherlands is globally renowned for its innovative approach to agriculture and sustainability. Known for its efficient use of space and advanced technological integration, the country has turned challenges such as limited land mass into opportunities for innovation.

A Hub of Agricultural Innovation

The Dutch are pioneers in greenhouse farming and vertical agriculture. Techniques like precision farming, which utilizes data and technology to optimize crop yields, have become a standard in Dutch agriculture. By studying in the Netherlands, students gain firsthand experience in some of the most advanced agricultural practices in the world.

A Vibrant Student Life

Apart from its innovation-driven environment, the Netherlands offers a diverse and vibrant student life. With affordable living costs, efficient public transportation, and a high standard of living, international students can enjoy a rich cultural experience. Dutch people are known for their proficiency in English, making it easier for international students to adjust to their new surroundings.

How to Apply for the Scholarship

To apply, prospective students need to submit an online application form, a personal statement, academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation. It is essential to thoroughly read and understand all application requirements to ensure a successful submission.

Meeting Like-Minded Individuals

Receiving the scholarship provides not just financial assistance but also the opportunity to join a community of passionate individuals. This network can be invaluable for future collaborations and career opportunities. Students often forge strong bonds with peers, professors, and professionals, enriching their academic journey and professional network.

Other Scholarship Opportunities

For those interested in exploring additional opportunities, there are several other notable scholarships that can complement or serve as alternatives to the €5,000 Renewable Agriculture Scholarship.

For instance, the $4,000 Social Work Scholarship in New Zealand for 2024 targets students interested in making a positive social impact. This scholarship is ideal for those looking to integrate community work with sustainable agricultural practices, thereby broadening their scope of influence.

Similarly, the $12,000 Science Communication Scholarship available in Belgium for 2024 is perfect for individuals aiming to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding. This is particularly relevant in sustainability sectors where effective communication is key to implementing widespread changes.

The €5,000 Renewable Agriculture Scholarship at Wageningen University offers an unmatched opportunity for students passionate about sustainability and innovative agricultural practices. The Netherlands’ rich history of agricultural advancement, combined with the university’s world-class resources, makes this scholarship a compelling option for future leaders in sustainable agriculture.

By seizing this opportunity, students can contribute to a more sustainable world while enhancing their academic and professional journey. Wageningen University not only provides the knowledge and skills but also fosters a community dedicated to making a difference. This scholarship is a stepping stone for those ready to tackle the pressing challenges of our time and lead the way toward a more sustainable future.

Contents • Problem statement • Generic Project Aims. • Main project phases. • Dimensions for project Management. • Generic Process Specification. • Requirements for Automatic Project Support. • Reference Strategy and Ontological Approach. • Results sofar. • Detail in presentation by Huub Scholten.

Problem Statement • How to manage effectively Development and Design Projects? • How to make these projects transparent?

Generic project goals: • A product and service with integrity and quality attributes as envisaged, negotiated and agreed upon in proposal. It is assumed that there are a #of measures associated with product, execution and management process of the project. These in terms of: • What activities need to be done. • What are best practices in a disciplinary community for executing these activities related to problem (+domain). • How can one evaluate merits of (alternative) approaches for an activity. • Timely Delivery of Product and Service (quality assurance). • Delivery within budgets and using allowed resources. • Project administration and reporting. Accountability, auditing and quality assurance and control  necessity to closely monitor execution of process by proper administrations about project execution and resources used. This involves: • Activities executed. • Methods, tools, models, data resources and systems used. • Associates executing activities (with skills). • Time and other resources used in activities. For costs and (accrued) benefits.

Major Project phases: • Initial Project Definition, Proposal and Acquisition. • Project Execution and Delivery. • Commonalities: • Problem Statement • Cost benefit • Approach to execute and manage phase of project. • Differences: • Level of abstraction (less detailed– very detailed) • Norm resources versus specific resources during execution. • Choice of methods, models and tools not specific, allowed choice versus detailed choice during execution. • Etc. • Remainder: look at execution .

Dimensions of project management • Process Dimension: Participants need shared understanding of problem (domain) and process to tackle it. • Content dimension: Choices of disciplinary contributions (models and approaches). Manage gap between what is needed, available and possible. • Transparency and Quality dimension. • Acquisition phase: shared understanding about what to achieve (product, quality and process) and at what cost and when. • Execution phase: • Do as agreed upon--- • Administrate and be able to show that team has performed as agreed.

Main Components of Research Process.

Supporting Project Management task Elements of PMT: • Making specifications of project phases. • Followed by execution and obtaining Meta Data about execution for monitoring and control. Automated support calls for: • Formal and precise description of specification . • A specification using terms and relationships that are unambiguous for man and machine. That is obtained via ontological approach. • A specification that is derived form a generic one in the (sub) problem domain. A generic one that is seen as ‘best practice’. This is called using a reference strategy.

Ontological approach Ontology: Formal specification of a Shared conceptualization. Develop ontological structure which is the frame of the intended knowledge base. That is the ‘data structure’ for a certain domain. Some vocabulary terms in this context: • Terms/concepts and relations used to describe domain. • Relations organize concepts in a hierarchical or some self-defined structure. • Instance: actual knowledge. • See Gruber, Borst, Uschold, Chandreskaran.

Project results to date. • Detailed ontological framework for development of a knowledge base for process models. • A generic process ontology in area Water Management. Ontology and knowledge base are proof of principle. • Qualitative evaluation: approach can be used in other domains. • Evaluations by partners: objectives of transparency and quality assurance can be met by approach.

Concluding remarks • Rest of story by Huub.
