Student graduates college with thesis on popular manga ‘One Piece’

em>A theology student at Toraja Christian University Indonesia (UKI) wrote about the popular anime One Piece for his undergraduate thesis.

Faldy Ekal Tappe, a 2018 undergraduate student at Toraja Christian University Indonesia (UKI), graduated from the theology program with a thesis that dissected the widely adored anime One Piece .

The thesis, which the title translates from Bahasa Indonesia into English as,  The Trinitarian Ecclesiology of One Piece : A Study of the Relationships of the Straw Hat Pirates in the One Piece Anime based on the Thoughts of John D. Zizioulas in ‘The One’ and ‘The Many’  was accepted by Faldy’s lecturers and he graduated UKI Toraja last March.

“I’m from the Faculty of Theology. Many of my friends at UKI write about Toraja culture and the likes, so I wanted to be different,” Faldy said on Oct. 17, as quoted by  DetikSulsel .

“Then, I saw a friend at the Duta Wacana Christian University [UKDW] wrote a thesis on Batman films. I happened to like the anime  One Piece , that’s why I tried to research it; so, I thought it’s interesting,” he added.

In his thesis, Faldy compares the characters of the Straw Hat Pirates who sailed the sea together to the fellowship of the church whose members support each other and unite in realizing their goals as members of the body of Christ.

“We indeed directed the research at the Faculty of Theology UKI Toraja to study modern theology as it is today,” Dr. Johana Tangirerung, vice dean of the Faculty of Theology, stated on the UKI Toraja website on Oct. 12.

“Modern Theology is closely related to pop culture,” she added, justifying Faldy’s research topic.

Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda,  One Piece  is the best-selling Japanese manga series in history, setting the  Guinness World Record  for “the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author”. It is also one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.

In multicellular organisms all cells in one individual have an identical genotype, and yet their bodies consist of many and very different tissues and thus many different cell types. Somehow there must be a difference in how genes are interpreted. So, there must be signals that tell the genes when and where to be active and inactive, respectively. In some instances a specific an expression pattern (active or inactive) is epigenetic; it is established and maintained throughout multiple rounds of cell divisions. In the developing Drosophila embryo, the proper expression pattern of e.g. the homeotic genes Abd-B and Ubx is to be kept active in the posterior part and silenced in the anterior. Properly silenced homeotic genes are crucial for the correct segmentation pattern of the fly and the Polycomb group (Pc-G) proteins are vital for maintaining this type of stable repression.

As part of this thesis, Suppressor of zeste 12 (Su(z)12) is characterized as a Drosophila Pc-G gene. Mutations in the gene cause widespread misexpression of several homeotic genes in embryos and larvae. Results show that the silencing of the homeotic genes Abd-B and Ubx , probably is mediated via physical binding of SU(Z)12 to Polycomb Response Elements in the BX-C. Su(z)12 mutations are strong suppressors of position-effect-variegation and the SU(Z)12 protein binds weakly to the heterochromatic centromeric region. These results indicate that SU(Z)12 has a function in heterochromatin-mediated repression, which is an unusual feature for a Pc-G protein. The structure of the Su(z)12 gene was determined and the deduced protein contains a C2-H2 zinc finger domain, several nuclear localization signals, and a region, the VEFS box, with high homology to mammalian and plant homologues. Su(z)12 was originally isolated in a screen for modifiers of the zeste-white interaction and I present results that suggests that this effect is mediated through an interaction between Su(z)12 and zeste . I also show that Su(z)12 interact genetically with other Pc-G mutants and that the SU(Z)12 protein binds more than 100 euchromatic bands on polytene chromosomes. I also present results showing that SU(Z)12 is a subunit of two different E(Z)/ESC embryonic silencing complexes, one 1MDa and one 600 kDa complex, where the larger complex also contains PCL and RPD3.

In conclusion, results presented in this thesis show that the recently identified Pc-G gene, Su(z)12 , is of vital importance for correct maintenance of silencing of the developmentally important homeotic genes.

In an early encounter with Arlong, when Nami is faced with the prospect of her home being destroyed, it’s Luffy who declares that if her home is her friends, he’ll just have to punch it back into shape. If there is a particular issue that Sandel does not address, then a more specific version of the thesis would include that issue—hand an explanation of why it is important.  

Arguable thesis with analytical claim 

While Sandel argues persuasively that our instinct to “remake” (54) ourselves into something ever more perfect is a problem, his belief that we can always draw a line between what is medically necessary and what makes us simply “better than well” (51) is less convincing.

This is an arguable analytical claim. To argue for this claim, the essay writer will need to show how evidence from the article itself points to this interpretation. It’s also a reasonable scope for a thesis because it can be supported with evidence available in the text and is neither too broad nor too narrow.

On Reddit, the One Piece Film: Red storyboards by Oda were shared on the r/OnePiece forum. The storyboards go over the early history of "Red-Haired" Shanks and Monkey D. Luffy and how Uta fits into the picture. Oda lists significant events in the series' history, such as a one-year-old Shanks being found inside a treasure chest by Gol D. Roger, which is mirrored in the movie through Uta as a baby. It also offers the earliest look at Luffy's childhood that the series has provided so far, detailing his first encounter with Shanks and his adoptive daughter.
