ഒ രുവർഷത്തിന് ശേഷമെത്തുന്ന ദുൽഖർ ചിത്രം, സംവിധായകൻ ജോഷിയുടെ മകൻ അഭിലാഷ് ജോഷി സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ആദ്യചിത്രം, നീണ്ട താരനിര, റിലീസിന് മുന്നേ തരം​ഗമായ പശ്ചാത്തലസം​ഗീതം തുടങ്ങി പ്രേക്ഷകരെ കാത്തിരിപ്പിക്കാൻ പോന്ന ഒരുപാട് ഘടകങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്തയ്ക്ക്. ആ കാത്തിരിപ്പിന് ഇപ്പോൾ അറുതിയായിരിക്കുന്നു. കൊത്തയുടെ രാജാവ് തന്റെ വരവ് രാജകീയമാക്കുകതന്നെ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് മാലിന്യപ്പറമ്പായിരുന്ന ഒരിടം കൊത്ത എന്ന രക്തം പുരണ്ട നാടായി മാറുന്നതും ആ നാട്ടിലെ പിൻതലമുറകളും രക്ത​ഗന്ധമുള്ള പാതയിലൂടെ ജീവിതം തള്ളിനീക്കാൻ നിർബന്ധിതരാവുന്നതുമാണ് അടിസ്ഥാനപരമായി കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്തയുടെ പ്രമേയം. തൊണ്ണൂറുകളുടെ മധ്യമാണ് കഥാപശ്ചാത്തലം. ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ കുറേനാളുകൾക്ക് ശേഷം മലയാളത്തിൽ വന്ന ​ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റർ ഡ്രാമാ ചിത്രംകൂടിയാണ് കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്ത.

പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ കൊത്ത എന്ന നാട്ടിലെ കിരീടം വെയ്ക്കാത്ത രാജാവിനേക്കുറിച്ചാണ് ചിത്രം പറയുന്നത്. തുടക്കം മുതലേ തന്നെ ഈ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ മറ്റുകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ കണ്ണിലൂടെ കാണിക്കാനാണ് സംവിധായകനും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത് അഭിലാഷ് എൻ ചന്ദ്രനും കാണിക്കുന്നത്. രാജു എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തേ നേരിട്ട് സ്ക്രീനിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാതെ മറ്റുകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെ അവർക്ക് ആരായിരുന്നു അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ രാജു എന്ത് സ്വാധീനമാണ് ചെലുത്തിയത് എന്നതിനാണ് ഊന്നൽ നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. അതിനുശേഷമാണ് കൊത്തയിലെ രാജാവിന്റെ വരവ്. ഇങ്ങനെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചതിന് ഉദ്ദേശം രണ്ടായിരിക്കാം. ഒന്ന് രാജു എന്ന കഥാപാത്രം എന്താണെന്ന് വ്യക്തമായി പറയുക. രണ്ട് മറ്റുപ്രധാനകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തുക. ഇതിൽ രണ്ടിലും സംവിധായകനും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തും വിജയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

​ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റർ കഥയാണെങ്കിലും ബന്ധങ്ങൾക്ക് ഊന്നൽ നൽകിക്കൊണ്ടാണ് ചിത്രം മുന്നോട്ടുപോകുന്നത്. കൊത്ത രാജുവും കണ്ണനും ടോണിയുമടങ്ങുന്ന സംഘം തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധമാണ് അതിൽ പ്രധാനം. കുടുംബം, സൗഹൃദം, പ്രണയം, സംഘർഷം തുടങ്ങി ഏത് ഘടകമെടുത്താലും തുടങ്ങുന്നതും അവസാനിക്കുന്നതുമെല്ലാം രാജു എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തിലാണ്. എല്ലാവരുമുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഒറ്റപ്പെടൽ ഉള്ളിലൊളിപ്പിച്ചവനാണ് രാജു. അയാൾക്കൊരു നിയമമുണ്ട്. ആ നിയമം ലംഘിക്കാൻ ഒരുവൻ തുനിഞ്ഞിറങ്ങിയാൽ എന്ത് സംഭവിക്കുമെന്നാണ് ചിത്രം പറയുന്നത്.

ചിത്രത്തിലെ കഥാപാത്ര നിർമിതി എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ട ഘടകമാണ്. ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം പോലും അനാവശ്യമെന്ന് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കാനില്ല. ഓരോ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കും അവരുടേതായ വ്യക്തിത്വവും കടമയുമുണ്ട് കഥാ​ഗതിയിൽ. എതിർചേരിയിലാണെങ്കിലും സൗഹൃദത്തിന്റേതായ കഥപറയാനുണ്ട് ദുൽഖറും ഷബീറും അവതരിപ്പിച്ച രാജുവിനും കണ്ണനും. സിനിമയെ സജീവമാക്കി നിർത്തുന്നതും ഇരുവരുടേയും ഈ ബന്ധമാണ്. ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ താൻ ചെയ്തുകൂട്ടിയ പാപങ്ങളുടെ ഭാരംപേറി ഒതുങ്ങി ജീവിക്കുന്നയാളാണ് ഷമ്മി തിലകന്റെ കൊത്ത രവി. ചെമ്പൻ വിനോദിന്റെ രഞ്ജിത്ത് ആകട്ടെ ​​ഗുണ്ടയാണെങ്കിലും ഉള്ളിൽ അല്പം ഭയംകൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. താര, മഞ്ജു, മാലതി, കുട്ടിക്കാളി എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള ശക്തമായ സ്ത്രീകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കും ചിത്രത്തിൽ ഇടമുണ്ട്. പ്രണയത്തിന്റെയും വേർപാടിന്റെയും മുഖമാണ് ഐശ്വര്യ ലക്ഷ്മി അവതരിപ്പിച്ച താരയ്ക്കെങ്കിൽ മഞ്ജുവിലേക്കെത്തുമ്പോൾ അത് പ്രതികാരമാവുന്നു. നിസ്സഹായതയാണ് ശാന്തികൃഷ്ണ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച മാലതിയുടേയും കുട്ടിക്കാളിയെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച സജിതാ മഠത്തിലിന്റെയും മുഖം.

പോലീസ് വേഷത്തിലൂടെ കയ്യടക്കം നിറഞ്ഞ പ്രകടനവുമായി പ്രസന്നയും ​ഗോകുൽ സുരേഷ് മികച്ച പ്രകടനമാണ് കാഴ്ചവെച്ചത്. ​ഗോകുലിന്റെ ചില രം​ഗങ്ങൾ പലപ്പോഴും അച്ഛൻ സുരേഷ് ​ഗോപിയെ ഓർമിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ശബ്ദം, രൂപം, പോലീസ് യൂണിഫോം എന്നിവ ഒത്തുവരുമ്പോൾ. ശരൺ, സെന്തിൽ കൃഷ്ണ, രാജേഷ് ശർമ, ​ഗോവിന്ദ് കൃഷ്ണ, ടി.ജി. രവി, അനിഖ എന്നിവരും അവരവരുടെ ഭാ​ഗങ്ങൾ മികച്ചതാക്കി. ജേക്സ് ബിജോയിയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലസം​ഗീതവും രാജശേഖർ, മഹേഷ് മാത്യൂ എന്നിവർ ഒരുക്കിയ ആക്ഷൻ രം​ഗങ്ങളുമില്ലാതെ കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്ത പൂർണമാവില്ല. നിർണായക രം​ഗങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം ചിത്രത്തെ മറ്റൊരുതലത്തിലേക്ക് കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോവുന്നതിൽ ജേക്സ് ബിജോയിയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലസം​ഗീതം വഹിക്കുന്ന പങ്ക് ചെറുതല്ല. കെ.ജി.എഫ് ചിത്രങ്ങളിൽ നായകനെ എലിവേറ്റ് ചെയ്തുനിർത്തുന്നതിൽ സം​ഗീതത്തിന് എത്ര പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ടോ അതേരീതിയിലാണ് കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്തയിലെ പശ്ചാത്തലസം​ഗീതവും ജേക്സ് ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. നിമീഷ് രവിയുടെ ഛായാ​ഗ്രഹണവും മികച്ചതായി.

ഒരു ​ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റർ ചിത്രം എന്നതിലുപരി സൗഹൃദത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാവങ്ങളാണ് കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്ത കാട്ടിത്തരുന്നത്. അതിന് മേമ്പൊടിയാവുന്നതാകട്ടെ രക്തവും സംഘർഷവുമാണെന്നുമാത്രം. മലയാളത്തിൽ ഏറെക്കാലത്തിനുശേഷം വന്ന മാസ് ​ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റർ ആക്ഷൻ ത്രില്ലർ കൂടിയാണ് കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്ത. നായകന്റെ രാജകീയമായ ആട്ടം കാണാൻ ടിക്കറ്റെടുക്കാം കിം​ഗ് ഓഫ് കൊത്തയ്ക്ക്.

‘‘തിരിച്ചുവന്ന യജമാനനെ കണ്ട നായയെപ്പോലെയാണ് കൊത്ത. ആദ്യം കുരയ്ക്കും പിന്നെ വാലാട്ടും പിന്നെ കാൽക്കൽ വീണു കിടക്കും.’’ഒരു മാസ് ആക്‌ഷൻ നായകന്റെ തിരിച്ചുവരവു കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന കൊത്തയെന്ന നാടിനെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്. രാജാവിന്റെ വരവിനായി കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന പ്രജയെപ്പോലെ കൊത്ത. ഗുണ്ടായിസത്തിൽ മെട്രിക്കുലേഷൻ പാസായി നാടുവിട്ട് പത്തുവർഷത്തിനുശേഷം ഗുണ്ടായിസത്തിൽ പിഎച്ച്ഡി എടുത്തു തിരിച്ചുവരുന്ന ‘കിങ്ങ് ഓഫ് കൊത്ത’.

ഓണം റിലീസായി ഇത്തവണ ആദ്യം തിയറ്ററുകളിലെത്തിയ കിങ്ങ് ഓഫ് കൊത്ത ദുൽഖർ സൽമാന്റെ അഭിനയമികവു കൊണ്ടും ആക്‌ഷനിലെ പെർഫക്‌ഷൻ കൊണ്ടും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. എൺപതുകളിലും തൊണ്ണൂറുകളിലും ജോഷിയുടെയും തമ്പി കണ്ണന്താനത്തിന്റെയും ചിത്രങ്ങളിലെ നായകൻമാരുടെ കണ്ണിൽനിറഞ്ഞുനിന്ന സ്നേഹവും വീര്യവും  നിസ്സഹായതയും ഓർമിപ്പിക്കുന്ന അതേ അഭിനയവഴക്കത്തോടെയാണ് ദുൽഖറിന്റെ വരവ്. പക്ഷേ മൂന്നു മണിക്കൂറോളം ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള സിനിമയെ ഈയൊരു ത്രെഡ് കൊണ്ട് ഒരു പുതുമുഖ സംവിധായകൻ എങ്ങനെ മുന്നോട്ടുകൊണ്ടുപോവും?.

മഞ്ജു, രാജീവ് അന്നേ പിന്മാറി: നയം രൂപീകരിക്കാൻ മുകേഷ് വേണ്ട? രഞ്ജിത്തിന് പകരം ആര്?

പീഡിപ്പിച്ച ശേഷം അവളെ കത്തിച്ചു; ഓരോ അരമണിക്കൂറിലും ‘കൊല’; അരുണയ്ക്കു ശേഷവും ഒന്നും മാറിയില്ല

‘സഹകരിക്കുന്ന നടിമാരുടെ പേര് പറഞ്ഞു: എന്റെ മുന്നിൽ കാട്ടിയതിന്റെ ഷോക്ക് മാറിയിട്ടില്ല: കയ്യും കാലും വെട്ടുമെന്ന് ഭീഷണി’

കിങ്ങ് ഓഫ് കൊത്തയെന്ന ആക്ഷൻ ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്റർ നോയർ സിനിമയിലൂടെ ‘മേക്കിങ്ങി’ൽ ജോഷിയുടെ പിൻമുറക്കാരനാണ് താനെന്ന് അഭിലാഷ് ജോഷി എഴുതി ഒപ്പിട്ടുവച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ പിന്നീട് ശത്രുക്കളാവുകയും ചതിക്കപ്പെട്ട നായകൻ തിരികെവന്ന് വേട്ടയാടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന പാടിപ്പതിഞ്ഞ കഥയെ തന്റെ മേക്കിങ്ങ് കൊണ്ട് മറികടക്കാനാണ് അഭിലാഷ് ജോഷിയുടെ ശ്രമം. ഇതേ കഥയുപയോഗിച്ച് ജോഷിയുടെ തന്നെ മാസ്റ്റർപീസ് സിനിമകളുണ്ട് എന്നതാണ് അഭിലാഷ് ജോഷി നേരിടുന്ന പ്രധാനവെല്ലുവിളി.  

ജേക്സ് ബിജോയ് ഒരുക്കുന്ന ബിജിഎം ആദ്യാവസാനം  അഭിലാഷ് ജോഷിയുടെ ശ്രമത്തിനു നല്ല പിന്തുണ നൽകുന്നുണ്ട്. ചോരയും കരിയും പുരണ്ട് കൊത്തയിലെ തെരുവുജീവിതം  ക്യാമറയിൽ ഒപ്പിയെടുക്കുന്ന നിമിഷ് രവിയുടെ ഛായാഗ്രഹണ മികവും അഭിലാഷ് ജോഷിക്കു പിന്തുണ നൽകുന്നുണ്ട്. 

മാസ് ആക്‌ഷൻ ഹീറോയായി തിളങ്ങാൻ കഴിയുന്ന അഭിനേതാവാണ് ദുൽഖർ സൽമാനെന്ന് ആരാധകർക്കുമുന്നിൽ തെളിയിക്കാൻ കൊത്തയ്ക്കു കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട്. ദുൽഖറിന്റെ ഒഴുക്കുള്ള അഭിനയമാണ് ചിത്രത്തെ തോളിലേറ്റുന്നത്. കൊത്തയെന്ന സാങ്കൽപ്പിക സ്ഥലത്തു നടക്കുന്ന കഥയാണ് ചിത്രം പറയുന്നത്. വണ്ടികളുടെ റജിസ്റ്റർ നമ്പർ പോലും കെഒ എന്നാണ് ! കഥ നടക്കുന്നത് 1996ലാണ്. കണ്ണൻഭായ് അടക്കിവാഴുന്ന കൊത്തയിലേക്ക് സ്ഥലം മാറിവരികയാണ് സിഐ ഷാഹുൽ ഹസൻ. പ്രസന്ന അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സിഐയുടെ വരവോടെയാണ് ചിത്രം തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. സർപ്പാട്ട പരമ്പരൈയിലൂടെ പ്രേക്ഷകരെ ഞെട്ടിച്ച ഷബീർ കല്ലറയ്ക്കലാണ് കൊത്തയുടെ കണ്ണൻഭായിയായി വിലസുന്നത്. കഞ്ചാവും ക്വട്ടേഷനുമായി നാടുവാഴുന്ന കണ്ണൻഭായിയുടെ സാമ്രാജ്യം തകർക്കാൻ എന്തുചെയ്യുമെന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിന് ഉത്തരമായാണ് ഗോകുൽ സുരേഷിന്റെ എസ്ഐ ടോണി ടൈറ്റസ് കൊത്തയുടെ പഴയ അധോലോക രാജാവിന്റെ കഥ പറയുന്നത്. അവനാണ് രാജു.

1986ൽ മറഡോണയുടെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കൈ സംഭവിച്ച ആ വേൾഡ് കപ്പ് നടക്കുന്ന കാലഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് രാജുവിന്റെ പോയ കാലം. സെവൻസ് ഫുട്ബോൾ കളിച്ചും തല്ലുണ്ടാക്കിയും കൊത്ത വാണിരുന്ന രാജുവായി ദുൽഖർ സൽമാൻ അഭിനയിച്ചുതകർക്കുകയാണ്. കുടുംബത്തിൽനിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ടവന്റെ ഒറ്റപ്പെടൽ, അതിൽ തണലാവുന്ന സൗഹൃദം, പ്രണയം എന്നിവയിൽ കോർത്തെടുത്ത ജീവിതം. കൂടെ നടന്നവരുടെ ചതിയിൽ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട് നാടുവിടുന്ന രാജുവിലേക്കാണ് കഥ നീളുന്നത്.

വലിയൊരു വീട്ടിൽ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടു കഴിയുന്ന താരയെന്ന നായിക. കൊത്തയുടെ തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത് അഭിലാഷ് ചന്ദ്രൻ തന്നെ എഴുതിയ ‘പൊറിഞ്ചു മറിയം ജോസി’ലെ മറിയത്തെ ഓർമിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ‘താര’യായി വരുന്നത് ഐശ്വര്യലക്ഷ്മിയാണ്. ആദ്യം ഭയവും പിന്നെ കാത്തിരിപ്പും കൈമുതലാക്കിയ കഥാപാത്രമാണ് താര.

‘King of Kotha’ Review: Dulquer balances classy action and mass appeal in this tale of friendship, vendetta

In Kotha, the rules are defined by Kannan (Shabeer Kallarakkal) and his gang. When a newly appointed police officer, Shahul Hassan (Prasanna), takes charge of the place, he is determined to bring Kannan to heel. To achieve this, he sets out to bring Kannan’s old friend-turned-foe and notorious gangster Raju (Dulquer Salmaan) back to Kotha, a place he once ruled over.

With ‘King of Kotha,’ Abhilash Joshiy has shown he is quite capable of handling action without compromising too much on quality content, almost like his father and veteran director Joshiy. ‘King of Kotha’ is not just a mass flick, but a film that does have an interesting storyline, just as Dulquer Salmaan claimed in his recent interviews. Friendship, romance, deceit, and vendetta make up most of the film’s plot.

highlight is Raju and Kannan’s relationship. While ‘King of Kotha’ is every bit Dulquer Salmaan’s movie, Shabeer Kallarrakkal also owns the film in his own way, breezing through the scenes with his swagger. Is he a friend or foe or both? His complex character arc is also the highlight of the film.

Chemban Vinod’s performances as Renjith will be remembered for a long time, as he delivers some of the best comic dialogues in the film. His dialogue delivery in English and his confrontations with Raju evoke genuine laughter. Prasanna, Nyla Usha, Anikha Surendran, and Gokul Suresh all perform excellently in the film. Aishwarya Lekshmi is satisfying to watch as Raju’s girlfriend, Thara, but she has little to do except be, well, Raju’s girlfriend.

Dulquer Salmaan excels in the action scenes. His look, though rugged in the movie, is alluring. Most of his dialogues are written for his fans, but his character arc too is interesting. He shines as a lover, doting brother, and a loyal friend.

Though the film gets a little predictable towards the end, the filmmakers have tried to steer clear from sticking to the old formula of mass action films. The songs and background score by Jakes Bejoy, the visuals by Nimish Ravi and the style of making have helped elevate the film, so it appeals to a pan-Indian audience.

King of Kotha Review: A Clever, Self-Aware Action Drama Turns Into An Empty Postcard Of Daggers And Swagger

The opening first hour of Abhilash Joshiy ’s King Of Kotha surprises you with its cleverness. Not only do these portions remain a step ahead of the viewer with its presentation and performances, but there’s also a hint of self-awareness that makes it more than just a big, bloated superstar coronation. An example of this is the writing that has gone into the character played by Chemban Vinod. In the context of the complete film, his character Ranjith is what you’d call the smaller villain: the sort of bad guy the hero has to overpower before he gets to the real boss. But in King Of Kotha , not only does Ranjith get a satisfying back story (his love for English comes from a Canadian) and a unique personality, but he’s the film’s only comic relief. Almost every line of his gets a cheer and you begin to miss him when the story moves on. 

The need to talk about a character like Chemban in a film loaded with people just like him arises from a certain lightness that vanishes the moment he vanishes. This includes the highly bombastic introduction sequence that begins with the film’s hero Raju ( Dulquer Salmaan ) crashing into Chemban’s lair, hours after a major murder. The situation is grim and dangerous, yet the decision to deflate the inherent tension with a series of funny one-liners makes this stretch the only bit that remains unpredictable in a film that is otherwise overpowering with a sense of déjà vu. 

Awkward Punchlines Dilute Serious Moments

This is doubly ironic because it’s the film’s dialogues that continue to let it down in almost every situation right after. Just when you feel like a scene has fought the good fight to deliver on all of its promises, it culminates in a punchline that is either silly or awkward. Among the most obtrusive of these is the way Raju has to talk to his lover, moments after he discovers she’s been cheating. It’s a “mass scene” DQ himself had aced in the climax of CIA , but in King Of Kotha , right when you think the stage is set for a kickass line that’s either heartbreaking or philosophical, you get a play on the word “kali”, but only to suggest that Raju misses being promiscuous. 

It was one of the early signs of just how self-seriously the film was going to take itself. Separated by a gap of ten years, the two halves of the film are presented with a Dulquer each with two different looks and temperaments. The Raju in the first half is what works best for Dulquer. The character is inherently younger and there’s a realness to him. His charm powers its way through love and heartbreak, friendship and betrayal. Given that Raju is on the verge of alcoholism also allows Dulquer the freedom to do more with Raju here. It’s as though Raju starts off as a colourful character with emotions and expressions, only for all that to be quickly turned down to just black and white. 

And this is probably where the film slides away too. From a real person with bruises and injuries, Raju transforms into a full-blown myth after he becomes Raju ‘Madrassi’. Except for a moment of weakness or two, he remains invincible to the point where the film itself turns into a tug of war where we’re just waiting to see which close family member or friend is going to be bumped off next. Which means that even when Raju himself remains a captivating character, there aren’t many a characteristic that give you a deeper understanding of just what or who he is fighting for. For instance, at the interval point, we’re led to believe that he’s being driven by the love for his sister. At a later point, you begin to feel it’s the love for his father. Also in there somewhere is his ex and his friendships, diluting a complex character into a self-sacrificial movie hero.

And you wonder why because the writing tries to create interesting set-ups that could have been put to better use later on. In an earlier scene, we get a grand football sequence you feel has been placed there as just another idea to establish DQ’s athleticism. But when you look back at the way a character refuses to pass the ball, it becomes a decent enough introduction for the film’s most notorious character. Most characters get details such as this: in one case it’s a cat that adds specificity to an older woman. In the case of Manju (Nyla Usha), it’s a secret she’s been hiding from her husband. When such details coalesce with the larger arc, it helps the film to some extent. But when it doesn’t, like with Manju, it becomes one more sub-plot or one more villain Raju has to deal with, adding nothing but screentime to the film.    

But the reason why the film remains watchable throughout is because it finds new ways to tell you things you already know. A part of this is the excellent cinematography by Nimish Ravi and the world-building by the whole production team that creates a fictional Kotha out of thin air. Even in a throwaway scene where you see Raju talking to a foster mother, you feel like pausing the frame to admire just how beautifully they’ve lit up an entire bridge in the background. Almost the entire film has that screenshot quality, urging you to wait for something special, even when the writing fails to generate that excitement. 

With the freshness limited to the visuals and the music department, the moments of high King Of Kotha achieve quickly deflate just when you feel the film has done its job. Sadly, there’s only so much you can do with daggers and swagger when the runtime is close to three hours.

• 3 scenes, in all of 3 hours: For a film with an excruciating run-time of 175 minutes, only three little scenes left a mark. Two of them involve Shammi Thilakan, who absolutely towers over the rest in terms of sheer screen presence (as a retired gangster turned family man). The third is a random drinking scene featuring DQ's and Shabeer's characters, and the only one where the dialogues sounded natural and indicative of a "supposedly" deep friendship. The rest of the film is completely flat, and of the two intro scenes for DQ's Raju, the first is slightly better. Chemban Vinod, playing a funny bad guy, is also quite good.
• That kickass background score - Jakes Bejoy single-handedly tries to cover up the gaping holes in the script with a fantastic effort on the score. If there's any reason to catch this on the big screen, it is to recognize this guy and the stuff he brings to the table even for the most mediocre flicks. "People of Kotha" is great ringtone (+ workout) material indeed.
• Cinematography & colour grading - Nimish Ravi paints Kotha in shades of brown and yellow, making for some organic visual texture. The setups and backdrops for some scenes actually look better than the scenes themselves. The colour palette is beautiful, be it in a bookstore, a bar, or at a playground.
• The writing: Abhilash N Chandran, who previously penned Porinju Mariam Jose, seems way too interested in creating conflicts that even lack a basic structure. Everything and everyone in Kotha is so random. How annoying it is that even when the writing lazily spends hours trying to detail various characters, including the main protagonist and antagonist, you don't feel emotionally connected to their journeys AT ALL! There's no shock of betrayal, no thrill of revenge; plus a surprising lack of elevation moments (except for the ones mentioned in the positives). The screenplay is old wine in an old bottle!
• Performances: Take a bow, seniors! The gangster crime sagas from your generation were obviously a lot better. DQ probably gives it everything he could, but Raju isn't a character anyone emotionally attaches themselves to, and he's too much of a charmer to carry/pull off the grit of a raw, cold-blooded gangster with almost psychotic shades. Shabeer Kallarackal's Kannan Bhai boasts a peculiar (but also familiar) blend of behaviours, and even though the guy's got the look and the gangster mannerisms right, I couldn't envision him as a "final boss". Aishwarya Lekshmi is utterly wasted, while Nyla Usha makes for an interesting-but-underwritten femme fatale.
• Sluggish pacing: Okay, when the story developments are so damn predictable, why director Abhilash Joshiy chose to stretch scenes out the way he did is beyond my understanding. Several scenes in both halves bring the pace to a drastic halt, and it takes a really long while to get to that forseeable finale. The tail-end also leaves much to be desired.
• Fight choreography: Except for the climax set-piece (which apparently was re-shot), the fight sequences in KoK are really meh. Action is an area where guys like Tovino and Antony Varghese have shown promise, but DQ falls way behind on this list. He's got a long way to go before he can even get close to what his father can still manage to do at 70+. For now, I'll put the blame sorely on the choreography, as even the final set-piece looks uninspiringly rehashed from the recent John Wick films.

King of Kotha Movie Review: Abhilash Joshiy's 'King of Kotha' is tailored for Dulquer Salmaan's stardom, but there's more style than substance

Would you believe me if I said that the most affecting character in Abhilash Joshiy's  King of Kotha  is a cat? It has been adopted by an elderly lady whose family has thrown her out, and it gives her what humans won't: a sense of companionship, a sense of not being alone, a sense of having someone to care for. The first time I saw a close-up of this creature, I wondered why we needed this specific visual. But much later, we get the payoff, and it's a brilliant bit of  masala -film writing. It ties into the bond between this elderly woman and this cat, and you see how the animal has come to mean more to her than even the humans who still love her. This lady is one of the many "victims" in the imaginary city of Kotha, which is now a den of vice, ruled by a gangster named Kannan Bhai (and played with lip-smacking flourish by Shabeer Kallarakkal, the Dancing Rose of  Sarpatta Parambarai ).

There are many other characters like this elderly woman, like this cat. There is a younger woman who is a victim of circumstances, a former sex worker with a complicated relationship in her current life. There is a mother who won't talk to her son. There is a gangster who is obsessed with his wife, and whose love she underestimates. There is a woman who runs a bookstore and who has – through her love – convinced her boyfriend to ban drugs in the region. There is a cop not averse to playing games in order to clean up this lawless land. And best of all, there are two friends, only one of who truly honours this friendship over time. In other words, the stage is set for a compelling drama punctuated by bursts of action.

But what we end up with is a slo-mo action movie with occasional bursts of drama. Look, Dulquer Salmaan is super-cool and he holds the screen with utmost confidence – so if all you want is to worship His Handsomeness, then run to the nearest theatre. But Dulquer, who plays Raju, is underserved by the generic writing. Yes, we all know "mass" movies aren't meant to be analysed too deeply – but if all you want to do is showcase Dulquer's undeniable star quality, why have so many other characters and so much drama and so much unused potential? Why not choose a simpler story that is geared towards simple star service? There is a scene where Raju begins to read a letter from a loved one. The reading is interrupted by the arrival of another character. We never return to the letter and we never get to feel the surge of emotion Raju must have felt. No number of slo-mo shots can make up for these lapses.

The generic writing makes little use of several actors, especially Aishwarya Lekshmi, who is Raju's love interest. Prasanna pops up every now and then as a cop who is more a device to deliver truckloads of backstory to the audience. (He is the listener, like us.) Poor Shanthi Krishna is wasted in a part that just has no scope in this kind of star-worship scenario. Apart from Dulquer and Shabeer, only Chemban Vinod Jose and Nyla Usha get a few sharp moments, and they make the most of them. The main character in  King of Kotha , though, is the style. This is a film that seems to have been conceived using storyboards rather than a screenplay. It looks dazzling, but there's only so much that eye candy can do in a nearly three-hour-long movie.

I wasn't bored, exactly. I was… underwhelmed. The scene where Kannan breaks a cop using a scan report carries so much potential – but the way it plays out is underwhelming. There is a plot point that Raju does not save money because he wants to celebrate life, but nothing comes of it – and that's underwhelming. The big friendship angle has its moments (like the one involving a cigarette), but due to the emphasis on swagger over emotions it turns out… underwhelming. We never feel Raju's love for Aishwarya Lekshmi, or his other emotional conflicts. The director keeps throwing things at you: a biker gang, a ridiculous journalist from Mumbai, a big fight sequence at the end with body-cam shots (I think)... The result is a showreel for surface-level style. Some substance would have helped to make this a far better movie.

King of Kotha review: Dulquer’s swag and strong performances make this a mass entertainer

Dulquer enters the picture 30 minutes after the show begins. But this doesn't let us down since the director sets the tone and mood already.

If films are meant for the masses, King of Kotha is one such movie that has all the required elements to be a mass entertainer this Onam season.

Produced by Wayfarer Films owned by Dulquer Salmaan, the action drama is directed by debutant Abhilash Joshiy, the son of veteran actor Joshiy.

Needless to say, the project garnered huge expectations prior to its release for several factors and has even set a record in pre-sale bookings in Kerala.

The graphic art during the title cards gives us a sneak peek into the backdrop of the film, while an introduction by Mohanlal lets us know about Kotha, a fictional village in Kerala where the movie is set.

The village of Kotha is set in three different periods — 1986, 1996, and 1998 — when it was ruled by gangsters.

The film is all about Raju (Dulquer Salmaan), his friends, family, and rivals.

The movie starts with Circle Inspector Shahul Ahammed (Prasanna) joining the duty in Kotha and facing the wrath of the K Company, headed by Kannan (Shabheer Kallarackal).

Shahul tries to put an end to the drug mafia run by the gang in the village but to no avail. Then, he learns about the village from his colleague Tony (Gokul Suresh).

Raju is a ruthless gangster who lives in Kotha with his henchmen like a king. His gang mainly consists of his best friend Kannan, and Tony.

Raju is good towards genuine people and cruel towards others.

His love interest Thara (Aiswarya Lekshmi) is on a mission to eradicate drug abuse, which is rampant in their village. Raju supports Thara in her mission.

However, after a tragic incident, Raju is exiled from the village.

Soon, Kannan becomes a dreaded criminal and forms his own gangster team called K Company.

The locals of Kotha miss Raju and hate Kannan for turning their village into a drug hub.

On learning this backstory, Shahul hatches a plan to bring Raju back to Kotha and nab the K Company members through him.

He learns that Raju now lives in Uttar Pradesh as Raju Madrasi, an underworld don. The rest of the film showcases the gang wars that take place after Raju returns to Kotha.

Layered plot

The plot has different layers. The movie, till the first half, offers a lot of entertainment as Raju does his swag in style.

He is a football lover. Some of his scenes in the football court give goosebumps to the audience. It also brilliantly depicts Maradona grabbing the World Cup title in 1986.

The first half is all about Raju’s life prior to 1986, how he encounters his rival Ranjith (Chemban Vinod Jose) — who hails from another village named Gandhigram — and rules Kotha.

In the second half, as Raju returns to Kotha as Raju Madrasi, he has to deal with his childhood friend Kannan alias Kannan Bhai and the latter’s wife Manju besides the police.

Will he lose Kotha or will he remain to be the King of Kotha forms the crux of the story.

So, Dulquer enters the picture 30 minutes after the show begins. But this doesn’t let down the audience since the director sets the tone and mood already.

Interestingly, Dulquer’s scenes have background music similar to that of Rajinikanth or Vijay’s film.

In a market fight scene, there are several references to old film posters of the Tamil blockbuster Baasha (1995) and the Malayalam movie Spadikam (1995).

Director Abhilash Joshiy uses these references to give an insight into King of Kotha .

In the second half, some of the scenes involving Dulquer Salmaan appear to have been inspired by Mammootty’s gangster film Samrajyam (1990), for they bear many similarities.

The story by Abhilash Chandran has all the flavours of a gangster film. It also has the format that’s essential for a superhero movie.

Its soul lies in Dulquer Salmaan’s swag and the revenge story.

King of Kotha has stunning performances by the cast.

Dulquer excelled in his acting and fighting scenes. He keeps us glued to the seats throughout.

Shabeer Kallarakkal as Kannan is a charm to watch. This is definitely his finest performance after his Tamil movie Sarpatta Parambarai (2021).

Aishwarya Lekshmi as Thara is good to watch. Her chemistry with Dulquer works out really well.

Nyla Usha in a negative role as Manju is impressive. This is on par with her role in Porinju Mariyam Jose (2019).

Sajitha Madathil as Kaalikutty, the mother of Kannan, makes an impact. Her final scene moves everyone in the theatre.

Shammi Thilakan as Raju’s father shines in all the scenes, while Shanti Krishna gets a decent role as Raju’s mother.

Anikha Surendran excels as Raju’s sister.

The background music by Jakes Bejoy plays a pivotal role in elevating the film.

Nimish Ravi’s cinematography aesthetically presents the fictional village of Kotha.

In all, King of Kotha has all the elements to be a mass entertainer. Above all, it has the potential to turn Dulquer  Salmaan into a pan-Indian star!

Kotha emerges from the shadows, its streets held in the grip of ruthless gangsters - an enigmatic realm painted by the introductory voice of Mohanlal. Penned by Abhilash N Chandran, 'KOK' undoubtedly serves as Dulquer Salmaan's launchpad into the realm of an action hero, a role he embraces with finesse. DQ embodies Raju, an unrelenting gangster in Kotha, whose days are spent carousing and indulging in vice alongside his comrades at a football club. Dulquer impeccably etches the character's rugged appearance and brutal mentality, particularly in his merciless dispatch of adversaries.

Raju finds himself at odds with his family, especially his parents: Kotha Ravi (Shammi Thilakan) and Malathi (Shanthi Krishna). Having inherited his father's legacy as a notorious goon, Raju treads the same path. However, his sister Rithu (Anikha Surendran) holds a special place in his heart. His entanglement with Tara (Aishwarya Lekshmi), the proprietor of a bookstore, significantly shapes the narrative. Overall, the screenplay allows for an emotional connection between the protagonist and those around him.

Raju's life story unfolds through a flashback recounted by his friend and police officer Tony (Gokul Suresh Gopi) to Shahul Hassan (Prasanna), the new Circle Inspector of Police in Kotha. This narrative exposes the reasons behind Raju's absence, leaving his friend Kannan (Shabeer Kallarakkal) in charge. The portrayal of another gangster, Ranjith (Chemban Vinod), injects moments of levity with his fondness for English and his ironic claims of integrity in the drug trade. With Kannan's narcotics enterprise flourishing in Kotha, Shahul Hassan hatches a plan to lure Raju back and quell the gangsters.

Director Abhilash adeptly unveils the intricacies of treacherous alliances and vendettas within friendships, along with the undercurrent of familial emotions in this action-packed drama. The clashes between rival gangs and brutal slayings intermittently serve as reminders of the film's genre. The plot invariably gravitates toward a foreseeable resolution, where enmities are settled.

Kannan's wife Manju (Nyla Usha) holds a pivotal role in her husband's life, even as he severs ties with his own mother, Kali (Sajitha Madathil). Shabeer Kallarakkal delivers a compelling performance as a menacing antagonist, his chemistry with DQ seamlessly melding with the narrative's progression. In the UAE and middle-east the release date is August 24, 2023.

The movie is said to be a crime thriller that revolves around the life of a gangster who rules the underworld of Kochi.

സർക്കാർ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിനിയായ കീർത്തിയായി ഭാവന സ്ക്രീനിലെത്തുന്നു. പൊതുവെ ശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും യുക്തിയിലും വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന കീർത്തിയുടെ യാദൃശ്ചികമായ ഒരു അതീന്ദ്രിയ അനുഭവത്തിലൂടെയാണ് 'ഹണ്ട്' മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്നത്.

ആത്മാവ്, മരണാനന്തര ജീവിതം ഒക്കെ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന സിനിമയിൽ യുക്തിക്കു സ്ഥാനമില്ല. എന്നാലും സിനിമ തുടങ്ങിയവസാനിക്കും വരെ വിചിത്രവും തീർത്തും യുക്തിരഹിതവുമായ അനുഭവമാണ് 'ഹണ്ട്' തരുന്നത്. ഒരത്മാവിന് പുറകെയുള്ള പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ യാത്ര എന്ന മുഖ്യ തീമിൽ സിനിമ നിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ആ തീമും പ്രേക്ഷകരും തമ്മിൽ ഒരു ബന്ധമുണ്ടാക്കിയെടുക്കാൻ സിനിമക്ക് സാധിക്കുന്നില്ല.

 90കളിൽ കുറ്റാന്വേഷണ സിനിമകളുടേയും പോലീസ് ത്രില്ലർ സിനിമകളുടേയുമൊക്കെ ഗതി മാറ്റിയ സംവിധായകരിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു ഷാജി കൈലാസ്. കക്ഷി രാഷ്ട്രീയം മുതൽ മധ്യവർത്തി ജീവിതം വരെയുള്ള ഒരുപാട് സംഭവ വികാസങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം സിനിമയിലൂടെ പ്രേക്ഷകരിൽ എത്തിച്ചു. ''ഒരെല്ലു കൂടുതലായ" മാസ്സ് നായകന്മാരോടൊപ്പം നിത്യജീവിതത്തിലെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സംഭവവികാസങ്ങൾ, സാധാരണക്കാരന് സിസ്റ്റത്തിലെ മൂല്യചുതികളോടുള്ള ധാർമിക രോഷം, ഒക്കെയായിരുന്നു ഈ സിനിമകളുടെ വിജയ ഫോർമുല.

ഐ. വി. ശശിക്ക് ശേഷം ആൾക്കൂട്ടത്തെ ഏറ്റവും നന്നായി ഉപയോഗിച്ച സംവിധായകനും ഷാജി കൈലാസ് ആയിരുന്നു. 'ഹണ്ടി'ന്റെയും തുടക്കം ആ രീതിയിലായിരുന്നു. അപ്ഡേറ്റടായി രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലെ ബ്രാൻഡ് ബിൽഡിങ് ഒക്കെ ഇടക്ക് കൊണ്ട് വരാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ കുറച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ തിരക്കഥ പാരാ സയൻസ്, ആത്മാവ്, അതീന്ദ്രിയ ശക്തി തുടങ്ങി പല വിധ അനുഭവങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പോയി. സിനിമ മുഴുവൻ ഒരു ഘട്ടം കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ഫോക്കസ് ഔട്ട്‌ ആയി. 

ഭാവന, ചന്തുനാഥ്‌, രഞ്ജി പണിക്കർ, അതിഥി രവി, അനു മോഹൻ, നന്ദു, അജ്മൽ, ഡൈൻ ഡേവിസ് തുടങ്ങി വലിയ ഒരു താരനിര സിനിമയിലുണ്ട്. ഇവരൊക്കെ യാതൊരു പരിക്കുകളും ഇല്ലാതെ സ്വന്തം കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ ഭംഗിയായി സ്ക്രീനിലെത്തിച്ചു. പക്ഷെ ഒരു ടിപ്പിക്കൽ ക്‌ളീഷേ സ്വഭാവം ഇതിലെ എല്ലാ കഥാപാത്ര നിർമിതിയിലുമുണ്ട്. അവരുടെ നടപ്പിൽ, ഇരിപ്പിൽ, ശരീര ഭാഷയിൽ, സംഭാഷണങ്ങളിൽ ഒക്കെ ഇത്തരം സിനിമകളുടെ പതിവ് വല്ലാതെ മുഴച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്നു.

നിഖിൽ ആനന്ദിന്റെ തിരക്കഥയിലും കൈലാസ് മേനോന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതത്തിലും ഒക്കെ അതുണ്ട്. ഒരു ത്രില്ലർ സൂപ്പർനാച്ചുറൽ സിനിമ പുലർത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന വാർപ്പ് മാതൃകകൾ അത് പോലെ 'ഹണ്ടി'ലെ എല്ലാ വിഭാഗവും പിന്തുടരുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇത് പുതുതായി ഒന്നുമില്ല എന്ന തോന്നൽ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. ഓൺലൈനിൽ വളരെ വിവാദമായ ഒരു പദപ്രയോഗമായിരുന്നു സിനിമക്കുള്ള പ്രെഡിക്റ്റബിലിറ്റി എന്നത്. അത് എത്രത്തോളം റിയൽ ആയ ഒന്നാണെന്നു അറിയാൻ 'ഹണ്ട്' കണ്ടാൽ മതി. 

തീയറ്റർ കാഴ്ച ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്ന യോണർ, താരങ്ങളുടെ നല്ല പ്രകടനം, അപകടങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാത്ത മുന്നോട്ട് പോക്ക് ഒക്കെയുണ്ടെങ്കിലും കാണാൻ പുതുതായി ഒന്നും തരാനില്ലാത്ത ചില സിനിമകൾ ഉണ്ടാകും. 'ഹണ്ട്' അങ്ങനെയൊരു സിനിമയാണ്.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN?

In February 2017, a popular Malayalam actor (also know for her performances in Tamil and Kannada films) was allegedly assaulted in a moving car . Five men kidnapped her, filmed the assault and dropped her off. The actor later filed a police complaint.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Malayalam actor Dileep , an influential person, had allegedly conspired with other men to "teach her a lesson".

The actor's assault case is still under trial. Over the years, several witnesses have turned hostile.

FORMATION OF WOMEN IN CINEMA COLLECTIVE (WCC)

The aftermath of the Malayalam actor sexual assault case led to the birth of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) . A group of 10 women from the Malayalam industry including Manju Warrier, Parvathy, Rima Kallingal, Remya Nambeesan, among others, formed the collective to make the industry a better and safe working space for women.

FORMATION OF HEMA COMMITTEE

It was in November 2017 that the Hema Committee comprising Justice Hema, actor Sarada and bureaucrat KB Valsala Kumari, began its work. They put out a statement asking women to come forward and promised that confidentiality would be maintained. Over 80 women shared their testimony in front of Justice Hema and spoke about the hostile environment that the Malayalam industry operates in.

In 2019, the committee submitted a 296-page report to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. However, for five years, the report was lying on the shelves. The government received backlash for their silence and their decision to not make the report available to the public.

WHAT DOES THE HEMA COMMITTEE REPORT SAY?

The 296-page report was finally made public on August 19. It consists of the testimonies of many women in the industry. In some places, the report also mentions girls instead of women, which indicates that minors might have also been victims of sexual harassment.

The exhaustive report does not name the perpetrators. It also provides a few solutions, some of which are ridiculous. The report exposed the darkest reality of Malayalam cinema, which enjoys a wide fan following across the globe.

The Hema Committee report explained that basic amenities - such as changing rooms and toilets - were not provided for women. But, what shook everyone was the sexual harassment stories, the existence of a powerful lobby (consisting of top directors, producers and technicians) and other systemic issues.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT CLAIMS AND SHOCKING REALITIES

The report has a separate section that talks about drunk men (actors, producers and directors) knocking on the doors of female actors' rooms for sex. "The women working in the Malayalam film industry are forced to provide sex on demand at shooting locations. Otherwise, they would be punished and harassed by the all-powerful mafia ," read the report.

The powerful lobby aka mafia makes sure that they do not let anyone speak up against them. "If the mafia is unhappy with any of the actresses, they harass them mentally by repeating the shots of intimate scenes on the set. One actress was asked to repeat a kiss scene 17 times by a director after she had complained," read the report.

Apart from harassment claims, the report also mentioned that the women were paid far less than their male counterparts. It also mentioned that 'Take Off' actor (who led the film) was paid less than the men involved in it.

REVIVAL OF MALAYALAM FILM INDUSTRY'S METOO?

Days after the release of the Hema Committee report, two actors came forward to expose their abuser. A female actor alleged that veteran actor Siddique - who is a powerful man - raped and harassed her when she was 19.

In 2019, the female actor accused the actor of sexual misconduct . At that time, she was criticised for making false accusations for publicity.

After the Hema Committee report, the female actor spoke in detail about how Siddique harassed her and raped her. Following the allegations, Siddique resigned from the General Secretary post of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

Recently, Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra accused Malayalam director Ranjith of inappropriate behaviour and how she felt uncomfortable.

Following this, filmmaker Ranjith stepped down as Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman.

SHOCKING SILENCE OF TOP MALAYALAM ACTORS AND TECHNICIANS

After the release of the Hema Committee report on August 19, members of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) played it down, saying they had yet to read the report fully. The government, too, said that they would not take action unless the survivor filed a legal complaint.

Top actors, including Mohanlal (president of AMMA), Mammootty and several others have been mum about the shocking allegations in the Malayalam film industry.

At the peak of the #MeToo campaign in 2018, Mohanlal had, in fact, called it a "short-lived fad ". The actor said this during the charity fund-raiser Onnanu Nammal.

"There's no big problem in the Malayalam film industry. You shouldn't think of #MeToo as a movement, actually. It's a fad, and it's turning into something of a fashion. Anything like that will have a lifespan for a bit," he said.

Mohanlal became the president of AMMA in 2018 and revoked actor Dileep's suspension after the actor was embroiled in an assault case. Dileep is one of the prime accused in the 2017 Malayalam actor assault case.

WHO SAID WHAT ABOUT THE HEMA COMMITTEE REPORT?

While a section of people praised the Hema Committee for the report, others have downplayed it, saying harassment and exploitation are not restricted only to the film industry but also in other industries.

Veteran actor and WCC member Revathy told IndiaToday.in , "I am happy. One thing is that this is the first time any state government has made this possible. Though it’s delayed, it has happened. A study of this kind has never happened with regard to the film industry. In that way, it’s very good. But I realise there is a long road ahead. Now we have to work hand-in-hand with the government and the film bodies and understand how to make it a safer place."

In the testimonies, the women also mentioned a few men who are respectful and treat women with dignity.

Tovino Thomas reacted to the report and said that 'it was hurtful' to see the Malayalam film industry being targetted. In an exclusive interview with us, he said, "I don't know the complete details about the Hema Committee report, but I would say that if somebody has done something terribly wrong, they should be punished; nobody is going to question that. Strict actions need to be taken now."

Malayalam actor Renji Panicker reacted to the resignations of Ranjith and Siddique and said, "Their creativity cannot be stifled, and it is impossible to exclude them from the film industry without concrete evidence."

On similar lines, actor-politician Mukesh spoke in favour of Ranjith. "He is my friend and colleague and claiming innocence over these allegations. We can't scream for someone's resignation. If calls for resignation yield results, no one would survive in politics. So, I think only Ranjith can decide on his resignation from the post of Kerala Chalachitra Academy."

Singer Chinmayi Sripada, in an exclusive conversation with IndiaToday, appreciated WCC and said, "The most important thing I want to mention here is that hats off to WCC. They came together to do something important. It has not been done in any other industry so far. Everyone is aware of these open secrets in all industries. We are talking about sexual harassment and sexual abuse, and the abuse of power in multiple other industries."

"The film industry has somehow got a very bad reputation. Sexual harassment is believed to be common and normal here. I am really grateful for the amount of work that the women and WCC have put together. The Hema Committee report wouldn't have come through in the absence of their push and perseverance," she said.

With the Hema Committee report becoming a heated topic of discussion, many women are expected to come out with their stories exposing the perpetrators in the film industry in days to come.
