DBAs also stand out because they represent only 2% of all people who hold higher degrees in business. In 2021, more than 250,000 students graduated with MBAs or specialist degrees in business; only 5,000 graduated with doctorates.

As you are planning out your education and career, you may be considering furthering your education beyond an MBA with a doctorate degree in a business-related field. This is a big decision, given that it is likely a three- to six-year commitment that would affect your career and your family, both emotionally and financially. Be sure to make this decision after taking some time for careful consideration.

Here are a few key questions to ask in order to help with the MBA to PhD decision process.

Why Do You Need a Doctorate?

This is the most important question.

If you have substantial executive experience and you are interested in teaching in higher education, you may be eligible for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business’ (AACSB) “bridge” program , which helps executives become effective instructors. This program is designed for highly seasoned business leaders who are only interested in teaching, not pursuing research. They can teach in business schools either part-time or full-time in a contractual teaching-focused position (called non-tenure track, or clinical, or professor of teaching). In that case, a doctorate is not needed at all.

If the only reason to pursue a doctorate is to study a business discipline or to deepen your quantitative skills beyond what is possible in an MBA (even one with a concentration), you may want to consider a graduate certificate or a master of science (MSc). They offer the opportunity to take three to 12 courses with a narrower focus, such as data analytics, human resources management, project management, digital marketing, etc. A certificate or MSc is a great complement to an MBA, especially if your MBA consisted of, say, 10 courses covering 10 different business disciplines, with little opportunity to go deeper on any particular subject.

It must also be stressed that boosting earnings is rarely a strong reason to pursue a doctorate in business if you already hold an MBA or MSc in a business subject. As careers in the private sector are more lucrative and typically do not require a doctorate (other than a few corporate economist and financial positions where a PhD is a must), the financial return on the investment into a business PhD may actually be negative if you plan to go into academia compared to a private-sector career with an MBA. As an example, through a successful career in the private sector, a business executive may well earn more than $200K annually five or 10 years after completing their master’s degree in business, whereas it is highly unlikely that a business academic with a PhD will ever reach that salary level. However, while significantly increasing your earnings may not be the main reason, there are obviously plenty of other valid reasons for pursuing a doctorate.

Valid reasons to go from an MBA to a PhD include:

• Ensuring you achieve the deepest level of expertise on a subject matter, which can then be leveraged in the private sector, public sector, and consulting. Sometimes a graduate certificate or even an MSc is not enough for the kind of career you seek out
• Getting the opportunity to teach in higher education, either part-time as an adjunct while keeping your full-time job in business, or full-time by switching from a business career to academia. If the latter, the choice is often motivated by seeking a second career that allows more freedom and flexibility (stable employment and great benefits are important perks).
• For marginalized populations , it may be an important way to be given the respect they deserve. And business doctorate programs face a serious underrepresentation of minorities, in part because many programs do not offer scholarships and assistantships (instead, they are money-making programs for the universities), which decreases the likelihood of minority enrollment . Fortunately, there are initiatives to redress the situation and grow a pipeline of minority PhDs that can ultimately join academia, such as McNair fellowships in business , and The PhD Project .

Which Kind of Doctorate?

Not all doctorates are created equal. You have to choose one that matches your career goals:

Doctorate in Education (EdD)

This is not a doctorate in business per se. As such, it is very unlikely to lead to a full-time position at a four-year college nowadays. However, it can be useful in consulting, in specialized areas of Human Resource Management (adult education/training), or to pursue a leadership career in education (high school and school district, or on the administrative side of higher education such as Dean of students, Vice-Provost, etc.).

Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA)

In business fields, there are DBA and Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (EDBA) (EDBA/DBA) programs.

DBA programs are more practically oriented, focusing on conducting applied research. For example, a project the DBA student investigates in their professional context, as “action-research” that can be implemented quickly and deliver concrete benefits to their organization. Because the focus is on research that can be implemented in organizations, rather than published in academic journals to promote knowledge in the discipline, the DBA is well-suited for a career as a consultant. It could also be used to land a full-time position as an academic or a leader at a community college, where there is no expectation of conducting and publishing academic research.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

PhD programs are more academic in content, typically providing even deeper training in research skills and subject matter, which often implies that they take longer to complete. A PhD first and foremost prepares students for a career in academia, specifically to be a professor or an academic leader, such as executive director, academic dean, provost, or president.

PhD programs focus on unique, theory-based research and publication of the findings of that research in academic journals and scientific books. If you are interested in a full-time academic career at a four-year college or university, a PhD is the degree for you. Of course, a PhD can also be leveraged in other careers such as consulting.

What Kind of Program?

Residential or online? Full-time or part-time? Every option exists.

If you aspire to mostly focus on teaching and therefore want to work at a college with a teaching emphasis, your PhD program options are broader than if you want to ultimately work at a business school where research expectations are more central. You have to select a doctoral program that will prepare you for the kind of academic career you aspire to: mostly teaching? A mix of teaching and research? Mostly research? Typically, the more prestigious the business school, the more emphasis is placed on research in its doctoral program.

If you want to be an academic, the more traditional route is to join a full-time residential PhD program where you can focus entirely on your studies and priming your research pipeline in order to prepare for a full-time academic position. Typically, seats are scarce at these PhD programs as it is extremely costly for universities to run these programs; they have to pay their most experienced professors to teach doctoral seminars to a very small number of students (often five to 10) who often have their tuition fully covered and get a scholarship or assistantship on top of that (often earning around $20K annually). If you are aiming to be hired as a faculty at a premier accredited school (AACSB-accredited for North America 1 , while in Europe EQUIS is another accreditation that is also prestigious), earning a PhD from a similarly accredited business school would be helpful (although outside of the USA there are quite a few prestigious business schools that are not AACSB or EQUIS accredited).

Some PhD and almost all DBA programs are part-time, offering students the option to keep working in parallel to their studies, but in that case, students have to pay tuition, which can add up to very substantial amounts over three to six years.

Finally, some programs are online rather than in person. In that category, a lot of DBA programs are either hybrid (each course has both an online and an in-person component) or mostly online with a small residency requirement (e.g., one weekend every semester). While it is not impossible to get a full-time academic position at a four-year college with a doctorate from a non-AACSB accredited business school, it is significantly harder, at least in North America. So, it is important to note that so far only one AACSB-accredited business school offers a fully online PhD program—University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Two current psychology graduate faculty discuss how the current events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and closures of campuses, might impact the admission and application process and share some general advice on what to expect.

Ana M. Franco-Watkins, PhD , is professor and chair, department of psychological sciences, Auburn University. Franco-Watkins works closely with the program directors of the department's four graduate programs (applied behavioral analysis, clinical psychology, cognitive and behavioral sciences, and industrial and organizational psychology) on graduate applications and admissions. In addition, as chair, she also works with other psychology department chairs through the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology to address COVID-19's impacts on graduate admission. 

Jerry Kernes, PhD , is professor, program chair, and director of clinical training PsyD program in clinical psychology, University of La Verne. Kernes is responsible for the administration and oversight of all aspects of the PsyD program. His duties include student recruitment and retention, practicum and internship training, and student advising. He chairs the program admissions committee.

Rebecca: Welcome to Hidden Curricula, a podcast exploring aspects of preparation for professional schools that may not be obvious or common knowledge. We will delve into topics of concern for undergraduates and discuss questions that relate to professional school applications. My name is Rebecca Curtin. 

Katie: And I'm Katie Wang. 

Rebecca: We are two of four preprofessional advisors at Stanford University. Our group works with students who are interested in professional fields such as law, education, business, and medicine.  

Katie: This podcast is not meant to be advice, like we might give to our students, but rather to shed some light on how an advisor might approach various situations and level the playing field for all applicants.   

Rebecca: Recently we have been discussing some typical timelines for applications to professional school, including medical and law school. Today on Hidden Curricula, we are continuing our timeline series by tackling MBA program application timelines.

Katie: I'm looking forward to this.  

Rebecca: Me too. Now, many of you out there listening will know that an MBA is a Master's of Business Administration. An MBA prepares individuals for advanced positions within the world of business and or can allow working folks an opportunity to pivot in their career paths. For this reason, it is often undertaken two or more years after graduation from college and after significant work experience. It could be for this reason that pre MBA advising for undergraduates is found less frequently within preprofessional advising spaces at colleges and universities. However, many undergraduate schools are starting to provide advice in this area.  Particularly because applicants seem to be interested in these programs earlier than they were in the past and thus may still feel connected to their undergraduate school and advisors. Business schools themselves also seem eager for applicants earlier on in their careers, appreciating the perspective they bring to the classroom, that is, as long as they have robust work experience.   

Katie: Now, even though here at Stanford we do not have an undergraduate business college or major, we have still seen a lot of interest from students wanting to know more about how to prepare for a future MBA application. 

Rebecca: Totally, Katie. We've seen a lot of students coming in for advice in this space in recent years. I'm pretty excited to be laying out the application timeline today. Because it's a little different from what you might expect if you're only familiar with applications to undergraduate schools or other types of graduate programs. 

Katie: So should we lay out some of these differences, Rebecca? 

Rebecca: Yeah, well, so the first difference is that business schools do not have a centralized application. You apply to each school individually, and this means you have to pay close attention and adhere to individual school guidelines, application components, and deadlines. 

Katie: I think it's worth emphasizing what you just said. It's very important for applicants to look at individual school websites and applications because of variances in applications. It also may mean applicants may choose to apply to fewer schools. Since there isn't an centralized component and each application is so individual, it's not as simple as clicking a box to apply to one more school. 

Rebecca: Exactly. 100%.  

Katie: Another difference has to do with the timeline itself. Generally speaking, the MBA application cycle is different, in that it is actually a few small admission cycles within one year. And this is the case for many, many MBA programs. 

Rebecca: Yes, that's a good way of putting it. Many, though not all, MBA programs have admissions rounds or application deadlines three times a year. There is usually an application deadline in September for round one, December or January for round two, and March or April for round three. A few months after each deadline, the MBA program will notify applicants of admissions decisions. There may also be an interview component before they release decisions. MBA programs start to fill their class for the next year after their first round deadline. Therefore, in each round that follows there are fewer and fewer spots available for next autumn's entering class. And, applicants need to know that they must choose one round in which to apply in an application year. 

Katie: So, say I'm an applicant wanting to start business school in autumn of 2026. The application opens in the early summer of 2025, and there would be a first round deadline in September of 2025. The second round applications would have a December or January deadline. And then the third round application after that has a March or April deadline. 

So, it sounds like I have a choice of applying in round one, two, or three, and if admitted in the round I apply, I would start business school the following autumn. 

Rebecca: That's it, generally speaking. 

Katie: Great. So, let's talk more about application components within this timeline. When should applicants begin to organize application materials like essays, standardized tests, and letters of recommendation? 

Rebecca: Well, applicants who plan to apply in round one should start pulling pieces together when the application opens, if not earlier. As we saw in the medical and law applications, giving yourself time to get feedback on your essays is paramount to a successful application. Also, you will want to give your recommendation writers plenty of time to write and submit their letters. I'd say at least two months' lead time is ideal. Standardized tests are another important component of an MBA application, and they require substantial preparatory time. For most MBA programs, applicants have a choice of two exams, the GRE, Graduate Record Examination, or the GMAT, the Graduate Management Admissions Test. And schools that accept both do not usually have a preference between them.  

Katie: So, Rebecca, let me go back and ask you a question about the letters of recommendation as it has to do with the fact that business school applications are not centralized. So, does that mean then that if I have a recommender and I'm applying to say five programs would that recommender then I need to submit five separate letters on my behalf to different schools I'm applying to. 

Rebecca: Yes, that would be correct. So your writer would submit letters to the different applications. Um, it's possible that you could use an external online dossier service to collect the letters, but generally speaking, you would send instructions directly from within each application and to each recommender. 

Katie: All right. Sounds like a reason to give them a little bit more time. 

Rebecca: Reason for both of you to be pretty organized, so you could help them with the organization by giving them a list of programs that you intend to apply to so they know where to maybe expect links from or how to submit letters. 

Katie: Got it. Yeah, organization does sound like an important piece of this. So, let's talk a little bit more about the standardized tests. I think we'll probably go into more depth in future episodes on these standardized tests, the GRE and the GMAT, but can you tell us a little bit more?  

Rebecca: Yeah, there's so much to  say on standardized testing. For our purposes today, that is regarding timing, it can take often about three to six months to prepare for a standardized test, depending on the test format and how much time you have in the day and the week to prepare.  You want to plan in this case of MBA programs to have the test completed around the deadline date for your application round. You can often report the unofficial score on the application and send in the official score once it becomes available. I say you want to have this done around the deadline date because this is one of the policies that may be school specific. So make sure you check schools for individual guidelines. You also may want to build in time for a retake of a standardized test if possible. 

Katie: I can see now how these components are similar to what applicants for other professional programs submit. But three deadlines an application year is definitely unique. How do applicants decide what round is the right one for them to apply in? 

Rebecca: Yeah, it is a great question. And as I mentioned earlier, applicants need to choose one round in which to apply. So you cannot, for instance, apply in round one and then reapply In a later round, if you're not admitted in round one,  applicants must make a considered decision about which round is best for them. Obviously, all things being equal, round one gives you the best shot, as the most seats in the class are available at that time. However, there may be reasons to choose a later round, such as needing more time with standardized tests or a big accomplishment happening at work. Or maybe if you're a working professional, you find yourself laid off in the middle of a cycle and decide it's a good time to pivot or take a break from work to go to business school and gain additional skills. If you have access to advising, this is a great question to chat about with an advisor or someone in the admissions office at a business school of interest who can address your unique situation. 

Katie: Okay, Rebecca, I know that here at Stanford there's been a huge interest, especially in recent years, in what are called deferred enrollment programs at business schools. 

Rebecca: Yeah, absolutely. Do you want to say a bit about deferred enrollment programs, Katie? I feel like I've been talking a lot.  

Katie: Sure, happy to. So deferred enrollment programs are designed for applicants who are seniors in college or who are in their last year of a master's degree program that they entered immediately from undergraduate studies. So no gap in an academic plan.  A well known version of this is the Harvard Business Schools 2 + 2 program, but there are versions of these programs at many business schools across the country, including right here at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. The idea with deferred enrollment is you apply to a program before leaving school, and if admitted, you then have a spot in a business school class that you will join after working for about two to four years. You and I will likely chat more about Deferred Enrollment Programs or Early Assurance Programs, Rebecca, in a future episode, since they are found across pre professional areas. However, what's most relevant to our discussion today is for listeners to know that the deadline for these programs is often the Round 3 deadline at a given business school. This means that applicants to deferred enrollment MBA programs are likely working on their applications in winter and submitting them in March or April. They're interviewed shortly thereafter and then receive a decision in June or July.  

Rebecca: Thanks Katie, for going over all that. And you're absolutely right that there's a huge amount of interest in these programs in recent years, especially from our perspective as advisors. This is partially because there's been a big increase in the number of business schools offering these programs, but also in undergraduate students who are interested in them. The word has gotten out. I think that they offer in terms of engaging in more risk-taking during your working years and feeling less pressure on your work experiences for them to be impressive to business schools is a huge draw. And we are also noticing that students seem to really like the certainty they feel these early commitments offer them. Many have also shared with me that they like the idea of applying during college since they are in that school mindset.  

Katie: Yes, though always a good idea to discuss with an advisor or admissions officer whether these programs are a good fit for you. A wonderful thing about MBA admissions is that there are information sessions and opportunities to meet with admissions staff. We strongly recommend applicants take advantage of these opportunities and learn more about programs of interest.   

Rebecca: Yeah, business schools are wonderful about putting on information sessions, both virtual and in person, or having opportunities for applicants to visit their programs. So one of the best things you can do as an applicant, if you would like to learn more about a program and have a conversation with the admissions office, would be to take a look at the business schools   admissions office events page, which usually will list upcoming programming. And there are opportunities often for both regular admission cycles as well as deferred enrollment in terms of admission sessions. 

Katie: Great. So a person interested in either the regular MBA admissions or the deferred admissions process at a particular business school could go to a program that was specific for that interest. 

Rebecca: Yes, so the sessions may be separate - they may run a session for deferred enrollment admission specifically or a session for the regular round. But yes, they would offer often both opportunities for interested applicants. So somebody who wasn't sure could potentially go to both sessions and learn about the different pathways.

Katie: Fantastic. 

Rebecca: So, should we bust a myth today before we wrap up?  

Katie: Let's do it. Okay, MBA programs usually have three application rounds. Today's myth is, I should apply in round one, no matter what, to give myself an edge. 

Rebecca: Now this is a good one and I know we touched on it earlier in this episode, but I think it's an important one to emphasize, because while we say round one would generally give you an advantage, there are obviously exceptions. So while it's true that applying in round one gives that advantage because more seats are available at that time. If you are going to be a stronger applicant for some reason by applying in a later round, then waiting to apply may be the best and most strategic call. And for Deferred Enrollment, you may not be eligible to apply in Round 1. This is different for different Deferred Enrollment programs, but for most of the ones I'm familiar with, their deadlines are often more around the Round 3 deadline. So always, always check school and program specific policies. And that wraps up our overview of the timeline for MBA applications. We hope you learned something and that this adds clarity to what can be a confusing process. Tune in again when we will unravel another aspect of the hidden curricula.

Applying to the Biological Engineering PhD program

Thank you for your interest in MIT BE – we want to receive your application! This page explains the application process and provides information specific to our program that you may use to strengthen your application. Our evaluation process begins with your electronic application folder and proceeds through an on-site interview.

We believe that our diverse, welcoming, and collaborative community fosters the most effective environment for training students to conduct world-class research. To maintain and further strengthen our culture, we depend on continuing to receive applications representing a broad range of academic and personal backgrounds. From 2019-2022, we invited applicants from 64 different undergraduate institutions holding and expecting bachelors degrees in many different disciplines to interview for admission. Of applicants invited to interview from 2019-2022, about 52% self-identified as female, and more than 18% self-identified as underrepresented minorities (as defined by MIT). Many students join the program immediately after completing their undergraduate studies, while others have already received advanced degrees or acquired post-baccalaureate professional experience.

The guidance below is intended to help prospective students understand the aspects of academic preparation and experience that poise applicants for success in our program and how to present this information effectively in their application materials. This guidance is not intended to describe any “ideal” application profile or minimum standards for admission (no quantitative standards exist). Every complete application received is reviewed holistically by BE faculty.

Application to MIT BE is competitive, with fewer than 10% of applicants receiving an offer to interview each year (we offer admission to the majority of interviewees). Applicants holding international undergraduate degrees may apply, and such applicants received about 3% of the interview offers made from 2019-2022. Interview offers are communicated asynchronously to applicants in January and February each year.

Evaluation of applications for PhD study in BE particularly focuses on:

• Evidence of strong academic preparation and demonstrated interest in both a quantitative discipline and a biological discipline
• Evidence of aptitude for and experience/accomplishment in scientific or engineering research
• Explanation of interest in pursuing a career that leverages PhD-level training in Biological Engineering under the guidance of MIT BE faculty advisors

Academic preparation. Success in the challenging coursework and research components of the MIT BE PhD program requires a strong academic background in both biology and quantitative engineering or science. While many successful applicants hold undergraduate engineering degrees and have completed substantial coursework in biology, there are many different ways to demonstrate the academic preparation needed. Applicants whose principal degree is quantitative, computational, engineering, or in the physical sciences can bolster their training in biology by taking core biology courses like biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology. Applicants whose principal degree is in a life science field can acquire quantitative training in courses beyond calculus, biostatistics, and programming/informatics such as differential equations, linear algebra, and advanced courses in probability, statistics, analysis, and computer science.

Understanding that every applicant’s personal and college experience is unique and that grading practices differ, BE has no minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement. We strongly consider the factors other than GPA described on this page in our admissions process. However, most applicants receiving an interview offer have a GPA in the A range (>3.6 on an A = 4.0 scale), and from 2019-2022 the median GPA of interviewees was 3.94. Many applicants with high GPAs do not receive interview invitations, and applicants with GPAs below the A range may be competitive for admission in our holistic evaluation process given other extraordinary aspects of their academic record, experiences, and achievements detailed in their application materials.

Applicant statement. This application component is a free-form opportunity to introduce yourself in writing to the admissions committee, explain your interest in Biological Engineering at MIT, and contextualize other application components including your academic record, research experience, and letters of recommendation. The admissions committee wants to hear why PhD-level training in Biological Engineering under the mentorship of MIT BE faculty is right for you, which research groups you may be interested in joining, how you have prepared to receive PhD training, and how this training may power your aspirations for the future. The MIT BE Communications Lab CommKit has additional content on writing statements of purpose . While not a particular focus of our evaluation, the statement is an opportunity to directly demonstrate your writing skills and attention to detail.

Letters of recommendation provide crucial evidence of research aptitude in successful applications. The most impactful support letters come from your faculty research supervisor(s) who know you well and have substantial experience advising PhD students. Support letters from other research supervisors, academic advisors, or course instructors may also be included. You can find general guidance (not specific to applications to study in the BE PhD program) on requesting letters of recommendation and on support letter content from the Biological Engineering Communication Lab.

To apply , go to the online application and create a user id and password. You do not need to complete the entire application in one sitting. You may begin the application, save it, and return to it at a later time using your user ID and password.

Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications ahead of the deadline and are responsible for ensuring that all admissions credentials are submitted on time. Your application will not be reviewed until all materials have been received. There is no separate application for financial support; all admitted applicants are offered a full support package.

The BE Department does not require the standardized Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test as part of our application process, but will consider scores if provided by the applicant.

I have heard of people who have gone on to pursue an MBA after their doctorates. What are the advantages/downsides of this?

Wouldn't the companies recruiting them after MBA value their doctorate experience less compared to the experience gained at an MNC? Is there a risk of them being valued as "failed" doctorates?

There are several cases where PhDs do an MBA. Some of them are:

• Bored of research as a whole.
• Irritation with academia and poor scope in Industry.
• Want to earn money.
• For furthering responsibilities at the university where one is a professor. If you do some looking around, a high amount of Deans to have an MBA along with a PhD.

A qualification regardless of level and field of study is never a waste, one needs to realize how to use it wisely and appropriately. As we navigate life we shift perspective and interests, our education choices therefore need to reflect this. Ph.D provides sound research focus, MBA provides sound business and leadership focus. The two combined is a great and electrifying combination.

PhD = specialist in a subject, research skills, critical mind MBA = Broad generalist, management, problem solving

The focus and scope is not the same. Also like it was said most researchers who want to climb the ladder need to take the management track which often require an MBA. Put simply an MD is an MD but a hospital manager needs to be an MD and MBA.

Also to teach at a business school other than math or economics you normally need an MBA. Best is a Phd/MBA but while a lowly MBA can teach that is not usually the case for a PhD.

Submit A Written Application

To apply to Harvard Business School, we ask you to assemble and prepare a variety of materials that will help us assess your qualifications. Remember, all materials must be submitted to HBS online by the application deadlines. The following serves as a preview of what you need to prepare.

Candidates must have the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (unless you are a college senior applying through our 2+2 Deferred Admissions Process ). Equivalent programs include international three-year bachelor degree programs.

We require uploaded transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate academic institutions that you have attended (full- or part-time).

You may upload an "unofficial" or student copy of your transcript; however, we will request an official copy for verification purposes should you be admitted to HBS.

When the Admissions Board looks at your transcripts, we are looking at the whole picture — not just your GPA. We take into account where you went to school, the courses that you took, and your performance. We understand the structures of different grading systems worldwide. There is no minimum GPA to apply, although our students usually have strong undergraduate records. Undergraduate academics are just one factor the Admissions Board uses to evaluate a candidate.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT, 10th Edition or Focus Edition) is a prerequisite for admission. There is no minimum GRE or GMAT score needed to apply and we do not have a preference toward one test or the other. If you look at our class profile , you can see that we have a range of GMAT and GRE scores in the current first-year class.

When submitting your application, you may report the unofficial GRE or GMAT scores given on the day of the test, or your official score if you have received it. Every applicant must have the testing agency send an official score report directly to HBS. A valid and verified score is needed to be admitted to the program.

Note on the GMAT Focus: Writing is an essential component of the MBA program. Therefore, to be admitted to HBS all students must have an official writing assessment. You can satisfy this with a valid GRE, GMAT 10th Edition, or English language test score. If you only submitted the GMAT Focus, which lacks a writing section, HBS will contact you at the interview stage about taking the separate GMAC Business Writing Assessment. If you wish to take the GMAC Business Writing Assessment before knowing your interview status, you will be able to do so beginning July 2024. Because the written application has opportunities to showcase your writing abilities (e.g. essays, short answers), you will not be at a disadvantage if you do not include the GMAC Business Writing Assessment before you are invited to interview.

Be advised that in order to apply in the 2024-2025 cycle, scores must be dated as follows:

A TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson Test of English (PTE), or Duolingo English Test is required if you did not attend an undergraduate institution where the sole language of instruction is English.

If you completed a graduate degree which was taught in English, it is recommended you submit one of these tests, but it is not required.

HBS only accepts the Internet-based (iBT) version of the TOEFL. Please note that the HBS code for the TOEFL is 3444.

HBS does not have a minimum test score to apply, however, the MBA Admissions Board discourages any candidate with a TOEFL score lower than 109 on the IBT, an IELTS score lower than 7.5, a PTE score lower than 75, or a Duolingo score lower than 145 from applying.

Applicants to the MBA Class of 2027 (matriculating fall 2025) need to respond to these three essay prompts:

Business-Minded Essay : Please reflect on how your experiences have influenced your career choices and aspirations and the impact you will have on the businesses, organizations, and communities you plan to serve. (up to 300 words)

Leadership-Focused Essay : What experiences have shaped who you are, how you invest in others, and what kind of leader you want to become? (up to 250 words)

Growth-Oriented Essay : Curiosity can be seen in many ways. Please share an example of how you have demonstrated curiosity and how that has influenced your growth. (up to 250 words)

Joint Degree Essays :

Joint degree applicants for the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Law School, and Harvard Kennedy School must provide an additional essay: How do you expect the joint degree experience to benefit you on both a professional and a personal level? (up to 400 words)

Joint degree applicants for the Harvard Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences must provide an additional essay: The MS/MBA Engineering Sciences program is focused on entrepreneurship, design, and innovation. Describe your past experiences in these areas and your reasons for pursuing a program with this focus. (recommended length: 500 words). Applicants will also be able to respond to an optional essay.

You will need to have two recommendations submitted online by the application deadlines. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all recommendations are submitted online by the deadline date for the round in which the applicant is applying.

Use your best judgment on who you decide to ask - there is no set formula for who should be your recommenders. We know it is not always possible to have a direct supervisor write your recommendation – we would not want you to jeopardize your current position for the application process. Look at the questions we are asking recommenders to complete. Find people who know you well enough to answer them. This can be a former supervisor, a colleague, or someone you collaborate on an activity outside of work. How well a person knows you should take priority over level of seniority or HBS alumni status.

Recommendations must be completed online. Recommenders will be asked to fill out a personal qualities and skills grid and answer our two additional questions:

How do the candidate's performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (300 words)

Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response. (250 words)

This can be your standard business resume or CV. We do not have specific preferences on how your resume is formatted. Note: The HBS MBA Program is designed for students who have full-time work experience. While it is important for candidates to assess their own readiness to apply, the Admissions Board recommends that applicants have at least two years of full-time work experience (prior to enrolling).

Applicants must pay a $250 nonrefundable application fee* via credit card, which helps cover the costs of reviewing applications. There are two exceptions:

1. Active duty military applicants are exempt from the fee (details will be provided once you begin your application).

2. Applicants who would experience genuine financial hardship from paying the $250 fee may submit a request for a need-based application fee waiver . You can access the waiver request form after you start your application.

* 2+2 Deferred Admissions applicants have a reduced application fee of $100.

After your written application has been submitted and reviewed, you may be invited to interview. Interviews are 30 minutes and are conducted by an MBA Admissions Board member who has reviewed your application. Your interview will be tailored to you and is designed for us to learn more about you in the context of a conversation.

The interview is a positive indicator of interest, but is not a guarantee of admission; it serves as one element among many that are considered as we complete a final review of your candidacy. All interviews are conducted by invitation only, at the discretion of the Admissions Board. If invited, however, you must participate in order to complete the application process.

Interviews may be scheduled on campus, in domestic or international hub cities, or via Zoom. Neither the timing of your interview invitation nor its format, whether in person or via Zoom, implies anything about the status of your application or affects your candidacy.

phD after MBA, where do I start?

I am nearing graduation from my MBA program and while I never thought seriously about getting a phD before starting masters', I feel like my path is now different from how I envisioned it. I do enjoy the academia environment and wondering how I would fit into a phD program in business. However, since I never really gave it much thought before, my profile is all over the place - I graduated university with something like a 3.8 gpa from a small polytechnic in Europe, then worked for almost a year, before starting my MBA program at KAIST with a full ride scholarship (its quite a prestigious university in Korea), but pretty sure I'll only graduate with a 3.5 gpa. I never published anything, took GRE/GMAT or won any awards. I'm hoping to go to the US for my phD, but have no idea where to start with my profile, what else I can do to pad my profile, which schools to consider, etc. My goal is something like USC or Berkeley, but I dont know if I stood a chance. Being international and never really got to know the US college hierarchy, this is all really confusing. If you can, any recommendations would be great.
