Message from the Chair of Department

The Department of Social Work strives to promote the ideals of democracy, social transformation and social justice. We aim to practically apply the fundamental principle of the University of South Africa’s mission, namely to be “in service of humanity”. Our teaching strives towards academic excellence and relevance congruent with the ethos of the profession of Social Work and within the parameters of the Act on Social Service Professions (Act 110 of 1978 as amended). Our training is student-centred, supportive and empowering in nature.

On behalf of the Department of Social Work, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to all of you. Whether you are considering joining us or are already part of our vibrant community, we are thrilled to have you with us.

Social work is a profession dedicated to making positive and lasting changes in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Here at our department, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of social workers who will carry forward this noble mission.

As Chair, I am excited to see the energy, passion, and dedication each of you brings to our academic community. I also want to take this opportunity to emphasise the dedication of our academic and support staff. They work tirelessly to create a nurturing and enriching environment, ensuring that you feel safe and supported as you embark on your academic journey.
