How to master A Level Geography 20-mark essay questions

What should I do before attempting an A Level Geography 20-mark essay question?

Should i plan an a level geography 20-mark essay, how should i structure an a level geography 20-mark essay.

As we run up to exam season, many of you will now be completing your NEAs (non-examined assessment) and exam content, and starting to focus on exam technique. You may be thinking about how you will tackle the dreaded 20-mark essay questions . Essay questions are very much like marmite for students. Some love them as they get the chance to explore key geographic theories and showcase their knowledge and understanding, which may not be possible in lower-stakes questions. However, others may struggle to formulate their geographic ideas or structure them in a way that makes a convincing argument.

In my experience, all A Level geography students must be systematic and structured in the way they write their long-form answers. This approach ensures that students cover all the necessary content while also demonstrating the geographic skills that examiners are assessing.

Examiners use both AO1 and AO2 to evaluate students in essay questions. AO1 requires students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of places, environments, concepts, processes, interactions and change at various scales. AO2 deals with the application of knowledge and understanding in different contexts to interpret, analyse, and evaluate geographical information and issues. The strongest students can produce answers that balance the two aspects in their responses. If you weigh your answers too far toward knowledge recall and simply state facts, figures, and case study knowledge without doing anything with the knowledge (this is where command words are essential), you will not be able to achieve the highest levels described in the level descriptors.

Before you attempt essay questions, I suggest you take a look at the mark schemes for some past paper questions. It is important to focus on the level descriptors as these are what the examiners will use to assess your answers. Pay attention to the language they use to describe what they are looking for, and when you start your attempts, consider whether your language and writing style match the descriptors. The exam board mark schemes are available on the PMT A Level Geography past papers webpage .

Another place to look before attempting essay questions is the assessed sample answers produced by the exam boards (e.g. AQA Paper 1 Hazards Example Responses ). These are available on the exam board websites and show a range of pupil responses to exam questions. They come with a helpful commentary that explains how the pupils gained marks, highlights the importance of a well-structured response, and provides insight into what examiners are looking for when assessing your answers.

Where to start – command words

As mentioned above, it is very important for students to be systematic in their approach to answering 20 markers. The first thing students need to understand is the command word . Without knowledge of what the command word means and what it is asking you to do, you will not be able to fully engage with the question. To find out the meaning of different command words , you should visit your exam board’s website and look in the specification.

Essay questions tend to use the command words “to what extent” or “assess” . According to AQA, if the question includes the “to what extent” command word, you should “Consider several options, ideas or arguments and come to a conclusion about their importance/success/worth”. On the other hand, if it is an “assess” question, you should “use evidence to weigh up the options to determine the relative significance of something. Give balanced consideration to all factors and identify which are the most important.”

BUG the question

Command words can help guide you in how to structure your answers and the skills you need to exhibit. During KS3 and KS4, you may have been told to BUG the question, where B stands for box the command work , U for underline key terms , and G for glance back at the question .

I would encourage all A Level students to continue to use this strategy, even for longer essay questions. It will help ensure that you are answering the question you are being asked, rather than the question you wish you were being asked.

Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

It is crucial for all students to plan their essay writing before they start answering a question. An essay question requires you to write for a sustained period, and if you don’t have a clear plan for what you’re going to write, you may lose focus on your points and arguments and not fully answer the question.

I suggest that all A Level students write a brief plan before attempting the question . This plan should outline the introduction, including key terms to define and any case studies to introduce, the main argument in each of your paragraphs, and finally, the contents of your conclusion. Spending just five minutes on this will save you time in the long run and help keep you on track to answering the question fully.

A good structure is key to success in essay writing. A clear structure enables you to answer the question coherently and reduces the chance that you will lose the key focus of your points. All of the exam boards recommend following the structure outlined below:

Introduction

  • Main body of the answer (three to four key arguments)

In academia, this is sometimes known as the hourglass essay . An hourglass essay starts with a big idea, narrows down to a specific question, and then widens back out to explain why that specific question is important in the grand scheme of things.

The introduction of your essay should account for approximately 10% of the total essay length , and it’s an excellent opportunity for you to impress the examiner. Your essay introduction should give a broad view of the essay themes and provide a definition of the key terms that you have underlined in your question. It is also the place to introduce a case study location . A strong start to your essay is crucial as it demonstrates to the examiner that you have a clear understanding of the geographic content you’ve been studying.

Once you have written your introduction, you can then get on to answering the questions. While the introduction mainly covers AO1 (knowledge and understanding of geography), the main body of your answer should cover both AO1 and AO2 (analysis and evaluation in the application of knowledge and understanding).

As before, the way you structure the main body of your answer is very important, and you must form your points clearly and coherently. During my teaching and tutoring, I have seen many ways of forming these arguments/points, but the two most effective methods I have seen are using PEEL or PEACE paragraphs .

Everyone is different, and everyone has their unique writing style. My advice to all A Level students is to try both methods when beginning to tackle essay questions and determine which one works best for you. I would also recommend completing PEEL/PEACE paragraphs and asking for feedback from your teacher or tutor.

The main body of the essay should consist of three to four arguments that cover the views for the specific question. Those who can link back to the question but also between their paragraphs will have the best chance of performing well in their essay questions.

After completing the main body, you now need to finish your essay with a conclusion. Just like the introduction, this should be roughly 10% of the total essay length . The main aim of the conclusion is to bring your essay to a close and essentially answer the question you have been asked. In the conclusion, you should summarise your argument and avoid introducing any new information . It is simply a chance to express your own thoughts and opinions while bringing your essay to a close.

The quality of a conclusion is often a key indicator of the overall quality of an essay. Although it is a short section of the whole piece of writing, it provides a platform to showcase several important geographic skills such as analysis, summarising, and creating synoptic links .

Overall, it is very important that you give yourself enough time to complete your essay questions during your examinations and that you follow the structures discussed above. If you follow these guidelines, you will see an improvement in the quality of your essay responses.

Geography exams can be difficult to study for, especially since they require memorization skills. Maps and cities can be tricky to visualize. There are lots of specialist terms that can become confusing and mixed-up in your head, especially if geography isn't your best subject. Lots of techniques for studying for any exam can be useful for geography too. By combining the general principles of good studying, with some specific steps to improve you geographical knowledge and help you remember terms and information, you can give yourself the best chance to get a good grade in your exam.

Preparing to Study

Step 1 Find out the time and format of your exam.

  • It’s very helpful to know if you will have to write essay responses in the exam so that you can practice this in your study.

Step 2 Find out what you will be tested on.

  • You might find it best to study straight after school while you are still in a working frame of mind, so you can switch off later.

Step 4 Find a good place to study.

  • Make sure it is a comfortable place to sit, and ideally somewhere you can leave your studying materials when you’re not working.

Organising your Studying Schedule

Step 1 Organise your class notes.

  • If you find that you are missing vital notes, borrow them from a student or ask a teacher for help.

Step 2 Work out what material you need to cover.

  • It’s good to have a brief break after half an hour or twenty minutes so you keep your mind fresh and concentration high.
  • Limit the time you spend each night studying. Be sure to set aside space for other projects and assignments, as well as other activities.

Step 5 Break up your study topics into half-hour chunks.

  • If you are uncertain about how to do this you can ask your teacher for some advice.

Studying on your Own

Step 1 Prepare to study.

  • Once you have the cards then pick one at random and try to remember what it means, checking the back if you can’t. Once you have done this a few times you will find you can remember a lot more than before.
  • For example, you could write “Oxbow Lake” on a card with an explanation of what this is on the reverse side.

  • Memorize your locations by shapes. For example, Italy can be recognized since it is in the shape of a boot.
  • Learn the main cities first before focusing on the surrounding, smaller cities.
  • Create acronyms to help you learn the names of locations.

Step 4 Try an online practice test.

  • Not everything will apply to you and your exam, so use your judgement to decide if it is useful or not. A good way of judging whether something will be tested or not is to check your class syllabus and see if the topic is included.

Step 5 Apply effective studying methods.

  • In these short breaks stand up and move around a bit to release some tension and get your blood moving around more.
  • Don’t take really long breaks, you could lose your flow and find it harder to get back to work.

Step 7 Be wary of listening to music while you study.

Step 1 Create a study date.

  • This might be easier for some than others, so if you are trying to work and your friend keeps chatting, try to steer them back on topic and then maybe study on your own in the future.

Step 2 Test each other’s knowledge.

  • This also works with maps. Draw the outline of a country on a piece of paper and use it as a quiz question. Or say the name of the country and see who can draw it.
  • You can test capital cities in this way too.
  • You can keep score to make it more fun.

Step 3 Read each other’s essay answers.

  • You can ask your teacher if they will look at a practice answer.
  • You could also ask a parent or older sibling.

How do you write a great A-Level Geography essay answer?

Exams can be a stressful and nerve-wracking experience, especially when it comes to essay questions. As a student taking A-Level Geography, you may be feeling the pressure of writing a well-structured and thought-out essay for your exams. After all, they’re worth a lot of marks. However, don’t worry! With the right approach and preparation, you can easily tackle essay questions with confidence. Here is my method of approaching any A-Level essay question…

1. Read the question thoroughly!

You’ll have heard this time and time again from your teachers but this cannot be stressed enough! It’s important to read the question carefully and make sure you understand it. Take a few moments to think about what the question is asking and what points you should cover. Highlight keywords or phrases that will help you focus your answer.

Follow along with how I have highlighted this example question.

In this example, I have highlighted the key terms of the question. I want to figure out exactly what the examiner will be looking for and how I can be in with a chance of gaining all of the marks.

Within a few words, I know that the examiner is looking for my answer to be backed up by my case study material and I MUST reference it to get marks.

EVALUATE – means that in my answer I should be weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of the key terms and my answer should have a conclusion of if the management is beneficial or needs improvement.

If you know you will not have time to finish your answer to an ‘evaluate’ question it is important that you skip straight to the conclusion – no matter how short it will be. The examiner is looking for a conclusion in these answers regardless of the rest of the content and so you will gain marks even if it is not your best work!

Finally, I have highlighted the key information that I am being asked for. The question wants me to discuss both the PREPARATION and RESPONSE and so I need to include both in order to get a high mark for the answer. This question is only looking at the management of VOLCANIC activity. By reading the question carefully I am ensuring I do not waste precious time talking about unnecessary ideas.

2. Quickly plan your essay out.

Once you’ve read the question, take a minute to brainstorm some ideas. Make sure to jot down any relevant information, facts, and figures that you definitely want to use in your essay. This will help you to get your thoughts in order and make writing your essay a lot easier.

Make it clear on your exam paper what you do not want to be marked! If you have scribbled a quick plan on your page be sure to go back through and put a big X through it and write in capital letters – PLAN.

You really do not want to waste too much time on this as the allotted time for the paper is tight enough! A quick outline of a few statistics that you have in your head and do not want to forget along with what you have highlighted in the question should be enough to see you through!

3. Don’t forget to use evidence in Geography essays.

When writing an essay for A-level Geography, it’s important to back up your points with evidence. This evidence comes from your case study material and the resources given to you in the exam paper. You should ideally know your case studies inside out before your exam and if you struggle to remember everything then choose the shorter facts to memorise! Make sure to give as many facts, figures, or statistics as you can in your essay. This will help to demonstrate your understanding of the subject and support your arguments.

4. Proofread your Geography essay – if you have time!

Once you’ve finished writing your essay, take a few minutes to proofread it. You should only look back at what you have written after you have finished all of the other questions. Check for any spelling or grammatical errors and make sure that your points are clearly laid out. This will help you to present your best work and ensure that you get the marks you deserve.

Don’t worry if it’s messy! If you want to add more information that you think will genuinely gain more marks, don’t be scared to mark asterisks and carry on at the end of the essay or use arrows with more information at the side. Geography is one of the few A-Levels which is still marked in person, on paper and is not scanned in so you can afford a little bit of untidiness.

Finally…

If you find that the stress of the exam is having an impact on your writing skills it’s important to try and fix it as soon as possible. Essays can be daunting, but continued practice will help you to improve your speed. You’ll also begin to grasp what the examiner wants to see in your answer and know which parts aren’t necessary.

Common mistakes:

Writing an introduction paragraph with the summary of all the points you intend to discuss. It’s unnecessary!

Not using geographical terminologies in your explanation

Not supporting your explanation with detailed case studies (inclusive of statistics )

When examples are written, many are actually a repeat of the explanation but with the addition of a country name. Please avoid doing that! You’re better off not writing these kind of brief examples.

Writing brief body paragraphs so that you can attempt the conclusion. There’s no point giving a good conclusion if the main points of your argument are brief.

Some tips when answering levels questions!

Identify the demand of the question

Look out for the phrasing of the question to determine how many factors to consider in your answer (refer to table below).

Look out for the main factor(s) stated in the question and address it in the first paragraph of your answer

Leave your stand about the question to the conclusion (i.e. leave your “I agree with this statement to a large extent” to the conclusion and you justify your stand there)

Your conclusion is not a summary of your factors!!! This is where you apply your geographical understanding to justify why one factor is more important or whatever the question demand is. That’s why it’s important to frame your conclusion paragraph and argument with geographical concepts!

If you’re running short of time, focus on crafting detailed and well-explained body paragraphs, supported with examples. Do not focus on the conclusion when you're not done with your main argument.

The phrasing of the question will determine the number of factors to include in your answer. Here are 2 samples:

Sample #1 :

Factor A is the most important factor in determining the intensity of food production.

How far do you agree with the statement? Explain your answer. [8]

Structure of your answer:

Para 1: Explain how Factor A can intensify food production (Given perspective)

Para 2: Explain how Factor B can intensify food production

Para 3: Explain how Factor C can intensify food production

Para 4: Conclusion – state your stand about whether you think Factor A is the most important factor. Justify why with the use of geographical concepts .

Sample #2 :

Factor A is more important than Factor B in determining the intensity of food production.

Para 3: Conclusion – state your stand about whether you think Factor A is more important than Factor B. Justify why with the use of geographical concepts .

Some geographical concepts that you can consider when crafting your conclusion:

Scale of impact – localised , regional/ national , global/international

Time scale – long term vs. short term

Frequency of occurrence (e.g. when comparing the impact of earthquake and tsunami)

Level of development – DCs vs. LDCs (link to the financial capacity of the country and the accessibility to resources)

Sample Levels Question

‘The devastation brought about by a tsunami far outweighs that of any other tectonic hazard.’

Do you consider this statement to be true? Explain your answer. [8]

Given perspective

Devastation brought about by tsunami can significantly outweigh that of any other tectonic hazard as tsunamis can travel long distances and cause widespread destruction to coastal areas that are located far away from the origin of the tsunami.

Triggered by the 9.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean in 2004, the resultant tsunami spread throughout the Indian Ocean and caused damages to coastal communities in 12 countries .

Furthermore, due to the nature of how tsunami waves are generated, they can reach heights of 15m and travel at speeds of 30 to 50km/h as the increased amount of friction in shallower waters forces the waves to increase significantly in height.

As such, high energy tsunami waves can cause widespread destruction to the coastal and inland regions of low-lying countries such as Banda Aceh in western Sumatra, Indonesia. Tsunami waves between 4 to 39 metres in height travelled as far inland as 10 kilometres.

Alternative perspectives

However, the devastation brought about by earthquakes may outweigh the devastation brought about by tsunami due to the unpredictable and sudden nature of earthquakes which allows for little evacuation time , as well as the possibility of a series of violent aftershocks that may trigger secondary impacts such as landslides, liquefaction and further destruction of infrastructures.

The earthquake in 1970 off the coast of Peru destabilised the slopes of Mount Huascaran and triggered a massive landslide that travelled at more than 160 kilometres per hour and completely flattened the town of Ranrahirca within seconds, leading to a high death toll of more than 18,000.

During the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the loose and unconsolidated soil amplified the seismic waves and caused widespread liquefaction in the suburbs of Christchurch, as well as rock falls and slope instabilities in the Port Hills affected tens of thousands of residential buildings and properties.

In addition, devastation brought about by volcanic eruptions may outweigh the devastation brought about by tsunami as large scale volcanic eruptions may bring about long term regional problems that may in turn result in significant economic losses .

Large scale volcanic eruptions such as that of a stratovolcano can cause great destruction due to its explosiveness and the possibility of triggering deadly pyroclastic flows and lahars. Moreover, it may also lead to regional air pollution as large amounts of fine ash particles ejected during a volcanic eruption may be carried by wind over thousands of kilometres and lead to destruction of agricultural lands and closure of air space.

The eruption of the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, in 2010 produced extensive volcanic ash clouds containing tiny particles of abrasive glass, sand and rock. With prevailing wind blows the fine ash particles eastwards across the Atlantic Ocean, it posed a serious threat to aircraft engines and structures within the European region . As such, the eruption resulted in the closure of air space over much of Europe, causing delays to 1.2 million passengers daily and costing the airline industry a total of US$1.8 billion.

Nonetheless, devastation brought about by tsunami can significantly outweigh that of any other tectonic hazard in terms of its sheer scale of destruction on a regional and global scale . While other tectonic hazards such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes often bring about the greatest direct impact on a localised scale , the severity of tsunami destruction can be greatest where it is furthest away from the origin of the tsunami. For instance, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami travelled as far as nearly 5,000 kilometres to Africa, arriving with sufficient force to kill people and destroy property. Since the waves triggered by the underwater earthquake were able to cross entire oceans without great loss of energy , this shows that the devastation caused by tsunami can indeed outweigh that of any other tectonic hazards.

One of the most challenging aspects in writing good-quality extended answers is for A level students to understand how to ‘evaluate’. It is often a requirement of the highest mark bands in essay questions that require a student to critically reflect on policies, strategies and management plans and assess their degree of success, or otherwise. This evaluative quality frequently features in human geography questions, but may be equally applicable to physical/human interactions, such as evaluating a response to a natural hazard.

The free-response section is the hardest part of any AP test. Although AP Human Geography is much more straightforward than some other humanities AP exams, if you don't have your stuff down, the free-response section can still hit you where it hurts.

In this article, we'll go through the structure of the free-response section, some helpful tips for answering AP Human Geography FRQs , examples of what these free-response questions look like, and a few places where you can find the best practice materials.

AP Human Geography Free Response Section Format

There are three questions on the free-response section, each worth 7 raw points. You'll get one hour and 15 minutes to answer all three questions, or about 25 minutes per question. Your free-response score accounts for half your AP Human Geography test score (the other half comes from your multiple-choice section score).

Here's what you must do for each question, according to the College Board :

  • Describe, explain, apply geographic situation or scenario (no stimulus)
  • Describe, explain, apply geographic data using data, image, or map (one quantitative or qualitative source)
  • Describe, explain, apply geographic data using data, image, and/or map (two sources, qualitative and/or quantitative)

Note that a "stimulus" is a quantitative or qualitative source , such as a chart or table. As you can see above, you'll get no source for question 1, one for question 2, and two for question 3.

How to Answer AP Human Geography FRQs: 4-Step Guide

Before we get into examples with answer explanations, let's go over the essential steps you must take in order to effectively answer these types of questions .

AP Human Geography free-response questions are typically pretty straightforward so you can attack them in a methodical fashion. Here's a sample question from the 2020 Course and Exam Description that I'll use as a reference so you can see how the different steps apply:

Step 1: Read the Introductory Statement

Before you start in on the first part of the question, be sure to read the short introductory blurb. It sets up the topic you'll be analyzing and gives you firmer ground to stand on when addressing the rest of the question.

In the sample question above, the introductory statement makes it clear that the question will deal with states, national governments, and tensions between the two.

Reading all the introductory statements for the three free-response questions in the section before you start answering any of the individual parts can help you decide where to begin. If you see a topic that is especially familiar, you might go for that question first as you'll be able to answer it the fastest.

Step 2: Identify the Task Verb (and Understand What It Means)

In each part of the question (A-G), it's a good idea to underline the specific task verb at play, that is, what it's asking you to do. This should help you keep yourself on track when responding to the question. Identifying these verbs will also get you in the habit of paying closer attention to the differences between each of the tasks.

Here are the most commonly used task verbs on the exam, according to the College Board :

Compare: Provide a description or explanation of similarities and/or differences.

Define: Provide a specific meaning for a word or concept.

Describe: Provide the relevant characteristics of a specified topic.

Explain: Provide information about how or why a relationship, process, pattern, position, or outcome occurs, using evidence and/or reasoning.

Identify: Indicate or provide information about a specified topic, without elaboration or explanation.

For example, a question that asks you to "identify" something will merit a much more succinct answer than one that asks you to "describe" it.

In part A of the sample question, the key command is "define," meaning you could just give a one-sentence answer that clearly outlines what a multinational state is. In part E, the task verb is "describe," which denotes a longer answer that elaborates on an example of a centripetal force that governments use.

Finally, parts B, C, D, F, and G all use the command verb "explain," which means you will really have to go into detail to earn a point for each part of the question.

Ultimately, you'll save time and earn points if you're careful to make these distinctions among task verbs!

Step 3: Reread and Double-Check Your Answer

Once you've finished writing your answer, reread the question and your response to make sure you've done everything it asked you to do . If you're satisfied, move on to the next part of the question, and repeat the process of identifying task verbs and trying to get the full point offered at each part of the question (always labeled A-G).

After you finish the last part of a particular free-response question, check over all your answers for that question one last time to ensure that everything is the way you want it to be. Then you can move on to the next free-response question.

Step 4: Pace Yourself

This is more of a general tip for the AP Human Geography test, but as you work through the three free-response questions, make sure that you're keeping track of time and pacing yourself .

As a reminder, you'll have one hour and 15 minutes to complete three FRQs. This means you'll get about 25 minutes per question; however, it'll be better for you to try to complete each question within 20 minutes . This way you'll have some extra time at the end to go back and look over your answers and tweak them if needed.

Review your answers with a second, more critical eye. I think this picture is photoshopped, but I don't know for sure because I don't feel like Googling, "Can you have two pupil/iris combos within one eyeball?" Just kidding, I did Google it, and it's probably not a thing, but not even the internet knows for sure . OoOoOoOo.

AP Human Geography FRQ Example + Answers

In this section, we'll go through the answer to a sample free-response question from the 2020 AP Human Geography Course and Exam Description .

This question is an example of question 3 on the Human Geography exam. As you can see, there are two stimuli (a table and a photograph) and seven parts (A-G), each worth 1 point .

In order to earn full credit, here is what you'd need to write down as your answer, per the official scoring guidelines . (Note that there are multiple possible answers you could put down for A-G.) As always, pay careful attention to the task verbs being used!

(A) Answer Options

  • Delhi is classified as a megacity because it has a total population greater than 10 million.
  • From 1991 to 2011, Delhi's total population grew to over 10 million.

(B) Answer Options

Many people move to Delhi from rural areas and smaller cities ...

  • in search of employment opportunities.
  • in the hopes of improving their income or quality of life.
  • to join family members or friends already living in Delhi.
  • to have better access to services, health care, or education.

(C) Answer Options

  • The city's center increases in the size, height, and/or number of large apartment buildings and condominium that attract a growing population of middle-class workers in the country's capital.
  • Infilling occurs where open space presents an economic opportunity for landowners to build small multi-family housing units, placing more people into existing city blocks.
  • The government is increasing its provision of public housing in apartment blocks within the city, which provide larger buildings with multi-family housing units.

(D) Answer Options

  • A need for additional public transportation lines and/or added capacity on existing transit systems.
  • A need for improved sanitation, water supply, waste disposal, or wastewater treatment facilities.
  • A need for more housing, especially for lower-income residents.
  • A need for improved communication or electric utility infrastructure.
  • A need for additional public schools, colleges, universities, and/or libraries.

(E) Answer Options

Increased number of vehicles on the roadways results in visible air pollution, fog, smog, and/or airborne chemicals that lead to ...

  • health problems.
  • transportation accidents.
  • diverting potential economic investment in the city.

(F) Answer Options

  • India is a less developed country which has limited government funding to pay for pollution abatement programs (such as alternative fuels) or large investments in public transit.
  • India has a growing industrial sector which has limited environmental regulations such as controls on air pollution. Industrial air emissions contribute to the city's air pollution levels.
  • India has a large rural population and urban poor population who are dependent on burning wood for home heating and cooking. The smoke increases the city's air pollution levels.
  • During the dry season, farmers in northern India will burn the dead vegetation in their fields (following the harvest) to improve soil nutrients. The smoke can increase the city's air pollution levels.
  • As India's economy grows, more people can afford to own cars or buy trucks for their businesses. The additional vehicle increases the total amount of air pollution.

(G) Answer Options

  • Transportation-oriented development of new housing, industrial and retailing areas. Or, laws requiring new developments be constructed with bus lanes, train lines, and stations.
  • Vehicle restrictions, high-occupancy requirements, tolls, or congestion pricing to limit the number of vehicles on the roads.
  • Smart-growth policies, slow-growth, or zoning policies that restrict the amount of land that can be developed or create a development boundary or greenbelt around the city.
  • Alternative electrical energy and/or alternative fuel programs that are cleaner-burning or have zero emissions.
  • New Urbanism or mixed land-use developments where workers live, shop, and work within walkable distances.

How to Practice AP Human Geography FRQs

You can find plenty of AP Human Geography free-response questions (and their corresponding answer guidelines) online.

The College Board maintains a collection of real free-response exam questions that were administered between 2001 and 2021 with sample responses and scoring guidelines. This is the best resource for FRQs because you can rest assured that they're accurate representations of what you'll see on the exam in terms of content and difficulty level.

While there's nothing wrong with using free-response questions crafted by test-prep companies for preliminary practice, you should always incorporate official questions into your studying at frequent intervals.

A strong analytical question

  • speaks to a genuine dilemma presented by your sources . In other words, the question focuses on a real confusion, problem, ambiguity, or gray area, about which readers will conceivably have different reactions, opinions, or ideas.  
  • yields an answer that is not obvious . If you ask, "What did this author say about this topic?” there’s nothing to explore because any reader of that text would answer that question in the same way. But if you ask, “how can we reconcile point A and point B in this text,” readers will want to see how you solve that inconsistency in your essay.  
  • suggests an answer complex enough to require a whole essay's worth of discussion. If the question is too vague, it won't suggest a line of argument. The question should elicit reflection and argument rather than summary or description.  
  • can be explored using the sources you have available for the assignment , rather than by generalizations or by research beyond the scope of your assignment.  

How to come up with an analytical question  

One useful starting point when you’re trying to identify an analytical question is to look for points of tension in your sources, either within one source or among sources. It can be helpful to think of those points of tension as the moments where you need to stop and think before you can move forward. Here are some examples of where you may find points of tension:

  • You may read a published view that doesn’t seem convincing to you, and you may want to ask a question about what’s missing or about how the evidence might be reconsidered.  
  • You may notice an inconsistency, gap, or ambiguity in the evidence, and you may want to explore how that changes your understanding of something.  
  • You may identify an unexpected wrinkle that you think deserves more attention, and you may want to ask a question about it.  
  • You may notice an unexpected conclusion that you think doesn’t quite add up, and you may want to ask how the authors of a source reached that conclusion.  
  • You may identify a controversy that you think needs to be addressed, and you may want to ask a question about how it might be resolved.  
  • You may notice a problem that you think has been ignored, and you may want to try to solve it or consider why it has been ignored.  
  • You may encounter a piece of evidence that you think warrants a closer look, and you may raise questions about it.  

Once you’ve identified a point of tension and raised a question about it, you will try to answer that question in your essay. Your main idea or claim in answer to that question will be your thesis.

  • "How" and "why" questions generally require more analysis than "who/ what/when/where” questions.  
  • Good analytical questions can highlight patterns/connections, or contradictions/dilemmas/problems.  
  • Good analytical questions establish the scope of an argument, allowing you to focus on a manageable part of a broad topic or a collection of sources.  
  • Good analytical questions can also address implications or consequences of your analysis.

At Cambridge, Sam Altman answered questions from Sally Kornbluth, MIT president and cell biologist.

Her first question was: “what is your PDoom?” In other words, what are the odds that AI will eliminate all human life?

Responding, Altman criticized the construct of having people rate their doomsday predictions from one to 100.

“Whether you think it’s 2, or 10, or 90, it’s not zero,” he said, also pointing out that developing a PDoom assumes a static system.

“Society always holds space for doomsayers,” he said, expressing his approval for that tolerance, but also suggesting that instead of rating our potential for doom, we should be asking key questions that might help us to avoid an AI disaster.

“What needs to happen to navigate safely?” he said. “Take it in, confront it, take it seriously.”

As for ChatGPT, he said, the model will be better in time.

“We have a ton of work in front of us,” he said.

Contrasting his earlier notions of a sort of mythical AI creature with superintelligence that “rains money” on people, he talked about now how the tech revolution is showing itself as a fundamental trend.

We have a new tool in the tech tree of humanity, and people are using it to create many things,” he said. “I think it will continue to get way more capable, and it's just going to integrate into society in an important and transformative way.”

Contrasting AI to human cognition, he noted that the combination will be, in the end, capable of a lot.

“If we make something that is as smart as all of super-smart students here, that's a great accomplishment in some sense,” he said. “There are already a lot of smart people in the world.”

As for predictions about the effects later on, as AI helps us to reinvent our environment, Altman was hopeful.

“Quality of life goes up,” he said, “the economy cycles a little bit faster.”

In answer to another question from Kornbluth, Altman also addressed bias, saying we've made surprisingly good progress in dealing with its influence.

“For as much as people like to talk about this and say ‘oh, we can use these things because they're just spewing toxic waste all the time,’” he said, “GPT works well (in some ways) …and… who decides what bias means? How do we decide what the system is supposed to do?”

Then he mentioned an important trade-off: where do you put the hard limits for AI use?

“I think it's important to give people a lot of control,” he said. “That said, there are some things that a system just shouldn't do .”

Kornbluth asked him how to navigate between privacy and the need for shared data.

In response, Altman predicted that the future involves personalized AI with “a full recording of your life.”

“You can imagine that will be a super helpful thing to have,” he said. “You can also imagine the privacy concerns that it would present. … If we stick on that, how are we going to navigate the privacy versus utility versus safety trade-off, or security trade-offs that come with that?”

He mused that AI might, for example, testify against you or get subpoenaed by a court.

“That will be a new thing for society to navigate,” he said. “We already have (some of this privacy issue) with services we all use: AI makes it higher stakes, higher trade-offs.”

Teens come up with trigonometry proof for Pythagorean Theorem, a problem that stumped math world for centuries

As the school year ends, many students will be only too happy to see math classes in their rearview mirrors. It may seem to some of us non-mathematicians that geometry and trigonometry were created by the Greeks as a form of torture, so imagine our amazement when we heard two high school seniors had proved a mathematical puzzle that was thought to be impossible for 2,000 years. 

We met Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson at their all-girls Catholic high school in New Orleans. We expected to find two mathematical prodigies.

Instead, we found at St. Mary's Academy , all students are told their possibilities are boundless.

Come Mardi Gras season, New Orleans is alive with colorful parades, replete with floats, and beads, and high school marching bands.

In a city where uniqueness is celebrated, St. Mary's stands out – with young African American women playing trombones and tubas, twirling batons and dancing - doing it all, which defines St. Mary's, students told us.

Junior Christina Blazio says the school instills in them they have the ability to accomplish anything. 

Christina Blazio: That is kinda a standard here. So we aim very high - like, our aim is excellence for all students. 

The private Catholic elementary and high school sits behind the Sisters of the Holy Family Convent in New Orleans East. The academy was started by an African American nun for young Black women just after the Civil War. The church still supports the school with the help of alumni.

In December 2022, seniors Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson were working on a school-wide math contest that came with a cash prize.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: I was motivated because there was a monetary incentive.

Calcea Johnson: 'Cause I was like, "$500 is a lot of money. So I-- I would like to at least try."

Both were staring down the thorny bonus question.

Bill Whitaker: So tell me, what was this bonus question?

Calcea Johnson: It was to create a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. And it kind of gave you a few guidelines on how would you start a proof.

The seniors were familiar with the Pythagorean Theorem, a fundamental principle of geometry. You may remember it from high school: a² + b² = c². In plain English, when you know the length of two sides of a right triangle, you can figure out the length of the third.

Both had studied geometry and some trigonometry, and both told us math was not easy. What no one told  them  was there had been more than 300 documented proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem using algebra and geometry, but for 2,000 years a proof using trigonometry was thought to be impossible, … and that was the bonus question facing them.

Bill Whitaker: When you looked at the question did you think, "Boy, this is hard"?

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Yeah. 

Bill Whitaker: What motivated you to say, "Well, I'm going to try this"?

Calcea Johnson: I think I was like, "I started something. I need to finish it." 

Bill Whitaker: So you just kept on going.

Calcea Johnson: Yeah.

For two months that winter, they spent almost all their free time working on the proof.

CeCe Johnson: She was like, "Mom, this is a little bit too much."

CeCe and Cal Johnson are Calcea's parents.

CeCe Johnson:   So then I started looking at what she really was doing. And it was pages and pages and pages of, like, over 20 or 30 pages for this one problem.

Cal Johnson: Yeah, the garbage can was full of papers, which she would, you know, work out the problems and-- if that didn't work she would ball it up, throw it in the trash. 

Bill Whitaker: Did you look at the problem?

Neliska Jackson: Personally I did not. 'Cause most of the time I don't understand what she's doing (laughter).

Michelle Blouin Williams: What if we did this, what if I write this? Does this help? ax² plus ….

Their math teacher, Michelle Blouin Williams, initiated the math contest.

Michelle Blouin Williams

Bill Whitaker: And did you think anyone would solve it?

Michelle Blouin Williams: Well, I wasn't necessarily looking for a solve. So, no, I didn't—

Bill Whitaker: What were you looking for?

Michelle Blouin Williams: I was just looking for some ingenuity, you know—

Calcea and Ne'Kiya delivered on that! They tried to explain their groundbreaking work to 60 Minutes. Calcea's proof is appropriately titled the Waffle Cone.

Calcea Johnson: So to start the proof, we start with just a regular right triangle where the angle in the corner is 90°. And the two angles are alpha and beta.

Bill Whitaker: Uh-huh

Calcea Johnson: So then what we do next is we draw a second congruent, which means they're equal in size. But then we start creating similar but smaller right triangles going in a pattern like this. And then it continues for infinity. And eventually it creates this larger waffle cone shape.

Calcea Johnson: Am I going a little too—

Bill Whitaker: You've been beyond me since the beginning. (laughter) 

Bill Whitaker: So how did you figure out the proof?

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Okay. So you have a right triangle, 90° angle, alpha and beta.

Bill Whitaker: Then what did you do?

Bill Whitaker with Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Okay, I have a right triangle inside of the circle. And I have a perpendicular bisector at OP to divide the triangle to make that small right triangle. And that's basically what I used for the proof. That's the proof.

Bill Whitaker: That's what I call amazing.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Well, thank you.

There had been one other documented proof of the theorem using trigonometry by mathematician Jason Zimba in 2009 – one in 2,000 years. Now it seems Ne'Kiya and Calcea have joined perhaps the most exclusive club in mathematics. 

Bill Whitaker: So you both independently came up with proof that only used trigonometry.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Yes.

Bill Whitaker: So are you math geniuses?

Calcea Johnson: I think that's a stretch. 

Bill Whitaker: If not genius, you're really smart at math.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Not at all. (laugh) 

To document Calcea and Ne'Kiya's work, math teachers at St. Mary's submitted their proofs to an American Mathematical Society conference in Atlanta in March 2023.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Well, our teacher approached us and was like, "Hey, you might be able to actually present this," I was like, "Are you joking?" But she wasn't. So we went. I got up there. We presented and it went well, and it blew up.

Bill Whitaker: It blew up.

Calcea Johnson: Yeah. 

Ne'Kiya Jackson: It blew up.

Bill Whitaker: Yeah. What was the blowup like?

Calcea Johnson: Insane, unexpected, crazy, honestly.

It took millenia to prove, but just a minute for word of their accomplishment to go around the world. They got a write-up in South Korea and a shout-out from former first lady Michelle Obama, a commendation from the governor and keys to the city of New Orleans. 

Bill Whitaker: Why do you think so many people found what you did to be so impressive?

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Probably because we're African American, one. And we're also women. So I think-- oh, and our age. Of course our ages probably played a big part.

Bill Whitaker: So you think people were surprised that young African American women, could do such a thing?

Calcea Johnson: Yeah, definitely.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: I'd like to actually be celebrated for what it is. Like, it's a great mathematical achievement.

Achievement, that's a word you hear often around St. Mary's academy. Calcea and Ne'Kiya follow a long line of barrier-breaking graduates. 

The late queen of Creole cooking, Leah Chase , was an alum. so was the first African-American female New Orleans police chief, Michelle Woodfork …

And judge for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Dana Douglas. Math teacher Michelle Blouin Williams told us Calcea and Ne'Kiya are typical St. Mary's students.  

Bill Whitaker: They're not unicorns.

Michelle Blouin Williams: Oh, no no. If they are unicorns, then every single lady that has matriculated through this school is a beautiful, Black unicorn.

Pamela Rogers: You're good?

Pamela Rogers, St. Mary's president and interim principal, told us the students hear that message from the moment they walk in the door.

Pamela Rogers: We believe all students can succeed, all students can learn. It does not matter the environment that you live in. 

Bill Whitaker: So when word went out that two of your students had solved this almost impossible math problem, were they universally applauded?

Pamela Rogers: In this community, they were greatly applauded. Across the country, there were many naysayers.

Bill Whitaker: What were they saying?

Pamela Rogers: They were saying, "Oh, they could not have done it. African Americans don't have the brains to do it." Of course, we sheltered our girls from that. But we absolutely did not expect it to come in the volume that it came.  

Bill Whitaker: And after such a wonderful achievement.

Pamela Rogers: People-- have a vision of who can be successful. And-- to some people, it is not always an African American female. And to us, it's always an African American female.

Gloria Ladson-Billings: What we know is when teachers lay out some expectations that say, "You can do this," kids will work as hard as they can to do it.

Gloria Ladson-Billings, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, has studied how best to teach African American students. She told us an encouraging teacher can change a life.

Bill Whitaker: And what's the difference, say, between having a teacher like that and a whole school dedicated to the excellence of these students?

Gloria Ladson-Billings: So a whole school is almost like being in Heaven. 

Bill Whitaker: What do you mean by that?

Gloria Ladson-Billings: Many of our young people have their ceilings lowered, that somewhere around fourth or fifth grade, their thoughts are, "I'm not going to be anything special." What I think is probably happening at St. Mary's is young women come in as, perhaps, ninth graders and are told, "Here's what we expect to happen. And here's how we're going to help you get there."

At St. Mary's, half the students get scholarships, subsidized by fundraising to defray the $8,000 a year tuition. Here, there's no test to get in, but expectations are high and rules are strict: no cellphones, modest skirts, hair must be its natural color.

Students Rayah Siddiq, Summer Forde, Carissa Washington, Tatum Williams and Christina Blazio told us they appreciate the rules and rigor.

Rayah Siddiq: Especially the standards that they set for us. They're very high. And I don't think that's ever going to change.

Bill Whitaker: So is there a heart, a philosophy, an essence to St. Mary's?

Summer Forde: The sisterhood—

Carissa Washington: Sisterhood.

Tatum Williams: Sisterhood.

Bill Whitaker: The sisterhood?

Voices: Yes.

Bill Whitaker: And you don't mean the nuns. You mean-- (laughter)

Christina Blazio: I mean, yeah. The community—

Bill Whitaker: So when you're here, there's just no question that you're going to go on to college.

Rayah Siddiq: College is all they talk about. (laughter) 

Pamela Rogers: … and Arizona State University (Cheering)

Principal Rogers announces to her 615 students the colleges where every senior has been accepted.

Bill Whitaker: So for 17 years, you've had a 100% graduation rate—

Pamela Rogers: Yes.

Bill Whitaker: --and a 100% college acceptance rate?

Pamela Rogers: That's correct.

Last year when Ne'Kiya and Calcea graduated, all their classmates went to college and got scholarships. Ne'Kiya got a full ride to the pharmacy school at Xavier University in New Orleans. Calcea, the class valedictorian, is studying environmental engineering at Louisiana State University.

Bill Whitaker: So wait a minute. Neither one of you is going to pursue a career in math?

Both: No. (laugh)

Calcea Johnson: I may take up a minor in math. But I don't want that to be my job job.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Yeah. People might expect too much out of me if (laugh) I become a mathematician. (laugh)

But math is not completely in their rear-view mirrors. This spring they submitted their high school proofs for final peer review and publication … and are still working on further proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. Since their first two …

Calcea Johnson: We found five. And then we found a general format that could potentially produce at least five additional proofs.

Bill Whitaker: And you're not math geniuses?

Bill Whitaker: I'm not buying it. (laughs)
