Why social media is a Boon to Society?

Further, our likes, and dislikes are all being regulated by big social media companies, which are using it as a nudge unit to transform our choices. Even a click or simple Google search can lead to mails of respective products for commercial companies in the form of offers, and cashback to ultimately force one to buy that product. That’s how the cobweb of social media engulfs us.

Moreover, political parties start using these nudge units, which is a major threat. Even the radical organizations that are distributing the social fabric of the country. As per the report of the Institute of “ Economics and peace“, every year millions of dollars are shelled out. Which use to shape social media platforms to radicalize and ultimately shape the opinion of the common man. It has cost the world every year 1 to 2% of global GDP.

Social media has turned into a vicious cycle. Both parents working and access to unrestricted use of social media have transformed the enculturation process. Moreover, turning children into devils disturbs the balance of society. Blue whale game, misinterpretation of religious texts, and communal trolls are just the manifestations. Hence, it engulfed the man into the cobwebs of social media and harmed him.

With digitisation have also come various social media platforms, and Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat are among the popular ones. They allow us a range of options that essentially help us stay connected. But what is the impact of social media on students? Is it a boon or a bane for learners? Below are certain pros and cons of social media on student life.

Social media - the boon

There are numerous benefits of social media for students. For one, it allows students to exchange notes and lessons. Even professors share tutorials on social media. During this lockdown period, many innovative teachers have found a way to teach using platforms like Twitter and YouTube. Two, with the help of social media platforms, students now have access to a large number of like-minded people. If you are preparing for admission to a university, you can connect with alumni of that university to take guidance. Three, social media offers a platform for students to get their portfolio published. It allows them the option to be heard and seen. Four, there is no denying that social media has encouraged a culture of entrepreneurship. Many professions that were not seen with respect are now being given their dues. If one enjoys carpentry or makeup, social media influencers are now selling their passion viz apps like Instagram and earning a fortune as well. Five, social news is also feeding the intellect of students by keeping them updated with what's happening around the world. Various news media share updates on social media and increase awareness in young learners.

Social bane -  the bane

While there are several benefits of social media for students, some cons are hard to neglect. One, social media easily distracts students and shifts their focus while taking lessons. It is not uncommon for teachers to ask students to not use their phones in classes. Two, with social media, students are not spending enough time reading - a habit that helps in visualisation. It also does not leave much time for students to pick up a hobby like music or dance. Three, with social media, students are spending less time outdoors in picking up sports much required for physical development. Four, students may also be exposed to pornographic content via social media that is not appropriate for their age. Another more serious problem with social media for students is radicalisation by non-state actors. Young students are radicalised by terrorist organisations like ISIS that preach wrong ideas to vulnerable learners. They may also fall prey to cybercrimes on the dark web. Constantly gazing on the screen also worsens the eyesight of students.

Though the debate is an old one, it is best for students to reap the benefits of social media while being aware of the malpractices online and strike a healthy balance between the real and virtual world.

When the internet was created, perhaps no one was aware of its potential. It was just a convenience for sharing of information across some computers. Starting from ARPANET in 1960, passing through TCP/IP technology, today there is a social media system which brings us so close that as if time and distance stand reduced almost to zero. All of us who are on social media are from different parts of the globe, perhaps from places which we may not see during our lifetime, yet we are Facebooked, Twittered, Linkined, WhatsApped, and so on.

Social media has brought the world so close that political and geographical boundaries are crumbling. Time may come when netizenship may surpass citizenship. The more people-to-people communication is, the more is the strengthening of relationships. This is the basic principle of the political concept of nation-building. In an information society, bonds grow stronger. We are now heading towards a world-order of Net-state or states. In between, an ominous development of misuse of social media has cropped up.

A serious problem is that the spread of misinformation can severely impact the decision-making process. This is because we are closer in the virtual world but far away in the physical world. It was way back in 1993, a cartoon appeared in the New Yorker with the caption, “On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog”. Digital culture has become so widespread that whatever appears on the Net, is readily accepted. Cross-check is almost nil. It is a dangerous trend. The children today believe more in the popular search engine than anything else. That is why fake news goes viral almost instantly through social media forwards. It has a cascading effect. Not only the problem is of magnitude but also in not being able to find its source also.

There have been stray incidents of online crimes from time to time. However, recently released Mueller report in the USA has come as a bombshell. It is not yet clear up to what extent there was Trump-Putin nexus, but this is also not the concern of e-media sociologists. The main concern is how the democratic process could be influenced at such a mass scale. The report reveals the modus operandi of remote-controlled information warfare. This shows that the democratic process can be overturned through social media. A too dangerous development to be ignored.

In India, general elections are in progress. They are being conducted in phases because of the vastness of the area and high population density in some parts. Every political party is using social media to spread information on its policies and programs. It will be unfortunate if it, later on, turns out to be remotely controlled misinformation campaign. The worrying aspect is that if in a mature democracy like the USA, people can be misled, it is relatively easy in younger democracy like India.

The point which is quite clear is that social media misinformation can overturn a democratic process. It is antithetical to human rights for which the UNO stands for.

Presently the internet and its allied subjects are regulated by ICANN. It is an agency within the USA. There is a need for placing it in the hands of a broad-based agency like UNO or one of its affiliated bodies. A suggestion is in circulation that the internet should be placed under the supervision of IMF but at the same time, there is an apprehension that disturbing the status quo may result in fragmentation of the existing system. USA, EU and China may split apart. Maybe. But misinformation warfare is dangerous than conventional warfare. It has the potential to create a slow-paced disaster.

Does this proposal fit into the existing international framework? Article 1 of the UN charter sets out four purposes for the creation of the UNO. Disruptive use of social media fits into Article 1, particularly, third purpose, namely, “To achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all …”. The proposal fits at least into this particular provision.

Social media is an important tool put into the hands of an ordinary person. He or she can express views without going to conventional means of mass communication like TV, radio, etc. Of all the creatures, only human beings have the faculty of expressing themselves through language, written or spoken. It is for this purpose, freedom of speech is the most basic rights protected in all democratic setup. But at the same time, it should not eat away other rights through the spread of misinformation. A coordinated regulation is necessary so that it is put to good use, not the bad.

3. Explicit Content – Since anyone can post anything on social media, people post some content which is not good to see or consume. These contents include vulgar things, sexual content and brutal things. These content can sometime drive people to do something wrong or can lead to a condition where people feel insecure on social media.

Today is the world of technology and social media plays a very important role in developing the rural area of our country. Media is undoubtedly very vast and powerful mode of communication. Social media plays a key role in the development of the rural youth in India. Rural areas are the most important part of India whose 70 percent of the population lives in villages. “The true India is to be found not in its few cities, but in its seven hundred thousand villages. If the villages perish, India will perish too.” -M.K.Gandhi. Social Media refers to the web-based tolls and media that allow users to personally and informally interact, create, share, retrieve and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Social media includes social networking sites, blogs, micro-blogs, online forums, discussion boards and groups, Wikipedia, socially integrated text messaging. The youth are not matured enough to differentiate between fantasy and real life. Apart from this, over utilization of social media decreases the amount of time available for pursuing other activities which are useful for their physical and mental health and spending time with their family members. The revolution of communication in India over the last decade is astonishing. Technology has been growing at a rapid rate to accommodate the needs and desires of people in obtaining a simpler and more efficient lifestyle. One of the greatest technologies to hit this 21st century is the cellphone. At present, India is moving from an agrarian based economy to service-based economy. Consequently, the youth of India has turned tech savvy with the new electronic media channels, eg., radio, satellites, television channels, mobile phones, laptops and computers with mobile internet. This has proved to be a powerful force in the social transformation of urban as well as rural youth of India. The present electronic era has both its pros and cons. The electronic era not only provided better, faster and improved working ability of young people but also an emergence and new form of disorder in Indian youth. Since the last decade, the over utilization of social media is an ongoing activity which is increasing at an alarming rate and leading to addiction form among the Indian youth which is a serious concern. Problems arising from over utilization of social media have been documented worldwide including in India, where the use of social media has increased noticeably. Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to share content quickly, efficiently and in real time. Social media are interactive computer mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interest and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-alone and built in social media services currently available introduces challenges of definitions. The definition of social media has changed over a period of time, has been broadened and explained by many scholars through various perspectives. There is no precise definition of social media, however, speaking on a majority scale, believe that social media network is linked heavily with social networking sites, micro-blogging, various internet forums etc.

Whether technology becomes a blessing or a curse is a nuanced question and its impact is shaped by the choice societies make regarding its development and application and so is the social media – a latest but ticklish mode of communication.

It is not only a tool for communication but a pivotal force in reshaping the life of youth, comprising a major chunk of population offering significant opportunities and challenges in different countries including Pakistan.

According to DataReportal, there were 111.0 million internet users in Pakistan at the start of 2024, when internet penetration stood at 45.7 percent. Pakistan was home to 71.70 million social media users in January 2024, equating to 29.5 percent of the total population.

As this tool is used education and positive information sharing, it is also used for promoting nefarious propaganda, mud-slinging and character assassination. Sometimes it becomes too lethal for sponsoring anti-state narrative maligning the nascent minds and creating unrest in society.

Therefore, the saner elements take strong exception of negative information sharing and tarnishing image of our state institutions, urging to promote and share positive content on these media.

“We direly need to promote positive narratives about digital skills and a clear distinction between hate speech, disinformation and misinformation,” stated a lawyer and Internet Activist, Nighat Dad. “We must educate youth how they can play role in combating online narratives based on propaganda and disinformation.”

Although these platforms have economic impact in terms of monetization, promoting business and digital skills yet the question lies, whether we could add to capacity of educators for training of youth considering such developments? Are we focusing on AI, emerging technology, opportunities that these technologies are bringing?

“As our youth comprises over 60 percent of total population with many among them yet to learn positive use of social media, the government must devise a plan to prepare youth from school level to use social media platforms for positive purposes and economic benefits,” advocate Nighat Dad said. “It is important to educate them about their responsibilities to use these platforms for positive gains and penalties for their illegal usage.”

Digital Media Expert and former Chairman P@SHA, Badar Khushnood said, “Any technology has its good or bad tendencies that entirely depend on how a user utilizes it as he underlined that proper training on use of technology is imperative to extract maximum advantage.”

“Majority of students utilize internet or social media platforms for getting education, doing research, learning skills and earning,” said Badar who is also Co-founder of Bramerz and Fishry.com. “These platforms have great utilization for students. Therefore, parents and teachers need to guide children and students from the very beginning on constructive use of social media platforms.”

He also proposed teachers training to equip them for training our younger generation to yield positive social impacts and economic benefits.

As the world becomes a global village due to internet connectivity, offering everyone a level playing field to learn and excel, these platforms must be used for studying, online business and other economic benefits.

In this regard, the government also has an important role to play in adapting new business models and technologies and disseminate this knowledge to citizens enabling them to compete in digitally emerging world and benefit from flow of information in multiple areas.

The same time we also need to have a strict vigil on misuse of these facilities in promoting hatred and objectionable content, adulterating innocent minds as it is sometimes too worrisome that people cannot operate different social media channels at homes.

Then there is also political or religious maneuvering of innocent minds by hostile elements to distract people from their genuine notions and positive thinking. This badly harms our norms and culture.

“Therefore, the government must formulate policies on use of social media considering the best international practices,” Badar emphasized. “Law enforcement is necessary to check misuse of social media as well as ensuring that our talented youth earning foreign exchange form these modes is positively engaged in digital businesses.”

Why some residents of European hot spots just want tourists to stay away

For people who live in particularly picturesque quarters of charming European cities, the words “Instagrammable” or “Tik-Tok famous” can feel like harbingers of doom.

Or harbingers, at the very least, of intense annoyance.

Across the continent, this has been a summer of visitor-related discontent. The stresses of over-tourism sometimes spur irate displays directed at outsiders — such as attention-grabbing anti-tourist protests in Barcelona last month, with demonstrators wielding water pistols, or hostile graffiti popping up in places like Athens.

In some of the more iconic way stations on Europe’s tourist trail — Amsterdam and Santorini, Prague and Bruges, Dubrovnik and Florence — the downsides of being all-too-well-loved destinations are becoming more and more apparent. At the same time, tourism projections point to an even more crushing influx in years to come.

Even in areas where the economy is heavily dependent on tourism — or perhaps particularly in such places — activists are increasingly vocal about travel practices that drive up prices , strain services, hurt the environment and erode the quality of daily life.

A big event like the Summer Olympics in Paris can sometimes have a paradoxical effect — drawing those who want to attend, but at the same time putting off others who fear inflated prices and unmanageable throngs.

With the Games ending this weekend, initial visitor tallies pointed to an overall bump, but thinner-than-usual crowds and last-minute price cuts in areas away from the main sports venues.

When disgruntled feelings erupt, sometimes it’s the result of tourists behaving badly — in some cases, very badly indeed. But through sheer dint of numbers, even well-intentioned visitors can be a burden.

“There’s this phenomenon of all of us considering travel a right, of thinking, ‘Well, I’m allowed to go anywhere,’” said Charel van Dam, marketing director for the Netherlands Board of Tourism. “But there are obligations to fulfill that have to do with how we travel, and how we behave when we travel.”

The Netherlands, for example, expects around 60 million annual visitors by decade’s end — dwarfing the country’s population of about 18 million. Such lopsided numbers are common across Europe.

Grumbling about excess visitors is nothing new. In recent months, though, the local backlash has been making headlines.

The Barcelona protesters, incensed by skyrocketing rents linked to short-term holiday rentals, doused open-air diners in the famed Ramblas district — a gesture that tourism officials insisted did not reflect widespread public sentiment.

Elsewhere in Spain, street marches have popped up repeatedly on the island of Mallorca, where demonstrators brandished cardboard models of sleek private jets and cruise ships to decry the arrival of what they say are overwhelming numbers of visitors.

Travelers’ affronts in Europe’s tourist zones are sometimes glaringly apparent: pounding music from late-night parties, or puddles of vomit on doorsteps in quiet residential streets. But the slights can be subtler as well.

“Sometimes, I feel like they think I’m just part of the scenery,” said Janeta Olszewska, a 29-year-old emigree from Poland who works in Amsterdam’s famous floating flower market. “It’s so strange when visitors can’t even say ‘Good morning’ before they begin telling me what they want.”

In some locales, the business of promoting tourism has morphed into brainstorming over ways to manage and contain it. In Venice, where the tourist tide is as much a hazard as the seasonal acqua alta, authorities began charging day-trippers a 5-euro fee (about $5.40) in April.

But critics protested that the $2.4 million in revenue the city took in over a period of three months only pointed up the magnitude of the overcrowding problem.

“It was a great failure,” Giovanni Andrea Martini, a Venice City Council member who opposed the program, said in an email.

Some European cities, including Copenhagen, have embarked on a carrot-not-a-stick approach. A pilot program that began in the Danish capital last month, dubbed CopenPay , offers small perks like free ice cream to visitors who engage in eco-friendly behaviors such as picking up trash or using public transport.

Other venues are trying a dual track: Amsterdam, for example, is seeking to crack down on public drunkenness, discourage gawkers in the famous red-light district and curtail holiday apartment rentals — going so far as to inaugurate a “Stay Away” campaign aimed mainly at British stag partyers — while enticing visitors to venture outside the tiny confines of the city’s canal-lined center.

“You do catch more flies with honey than vinegar,” said Van Dam, the Netherlands’ tourism marketer, citing the success of sustainability initiatives such as hotels giving guests a free drink in the bar if they decline daily room cleaning.

Industry professionals and municipal authorities acknowledge that tourism is a trade-off: often an economic boon, sometimes a social bane.

In heavily touristed parts of Amsterdam, access to ordinary goods and services tends to dry up up as the commercial balance tips toward the wants and needs of visitors. Want an Aperol spritz, some CBD oil, or a ceramic Dutch-clog refrigerator magnet? No problem. But residents say finding penny nails or laundry pods or a spatula can involve a tiring trek.

Sometimes, touristic obsessions are a source of bafflement. At central Amsterdam’s landmark Athanaeum bookstore, whose eclectic periodicals draw a loyal clientele from across Europe, customers and staff alike were briefly mystified by the long queues at a nearby koekmakerij — a cookie shop.

They quickly figured it out: The place was all over Instagram.

“It was only one particular kind of cookie, and at first we thought, ‘How can that even work as a business?’” said Reny van der Kamp, 59, who has worked at the bookstore for more than 20 years. “Well, we found out. They actually had to have crowd control.”

Eventually, the cookie purveyor moved to bigger quarters about a quarter of a mile away. On a recent summer morning, the line stretched out the door.

Often, the public-nuisance aspect of tourism is confined to a small area of a given city, but then creeps gradually outward. Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, within the central ring of canals but traditionally a quiet residential area, is now frequented by selfie-snapping visitors — many of them drawn by rapturous descriptions on social media of the neighborhood’s winsome domesticity.

“Now and then, people actually crane their necks to look into our windows,” said Ricky Weissman, 43, an American special-effects designer who moved to the Jordaan a decade ago with his wife. “And you’ll see someone peeing on the side of someone’s house — it’s like, ‘Why? You can find a bathroom anywhere!’”

But he considers such intrusions to be offset by the surroundings. Their daughter, born here, is 5 now, and speaks Dutch and English.

“It’s a fairy tale, really, living here,” Weissman said.

Locals’ cherished routines are often disrupted, however — sometimes in dangerous ways. Commuting briskly by bicycle one day, Nashira Mora, who works as a tour-boat booker, had no time to react when a pedestrian — a visitor, she found out — suddenly came to a dead stop in the middle of the bike lane, eyes phoneward, oblivious to approaching cyclists.

“I went right over the handlebars,” the 26-year-old said ruefully. “Luckily, no one was hurt. And my bike was OK. But …” she trailed off and shook her head.

In many tourist centers, the coronavirus pandemic was a revelation for residents. For all the stress and isolation of lockdowns, and the immense tragedy of lives lost to the virus, landmarks usually avoided because of visiting hordes were suddenly empty — and fully revealed in all their glory.

“It did perhaps make people think about what it would be like to have their own city back,” said Mari Janssen, a 25-year-old studying Russian literature.

Locals and tourists often lead separate but parallel existences, more or less ignoring one another’s presence. The two worlds bump up against each other in places like the Albert Cuyps market, one of Amsterdam’s largest collections of open-air vendors.

Some merchants — a cheesemonger, a produce vendor, a baker — said that they had long counted local householders as their main customers, but that picnic-sized portions for tourists yielded cash bonanzas.

The change in the market’s character, however, was wearing on some. At a stand selling stroopwafel — a sweet concoction of layered wafers held together with syrup — a small group of foreign visitors began excitedly shouting orders at vendor Sylvia Lassing, 63, even as she was handing someone else their change.

“It’s a lot, sometimes,” she sighed during a lull a few minutes later.

A flower seller, asked about the tourist trade, irritably mimed how some outsiders would manhandle his delicate blooms — brilliant purple irises and Van Gogh-worthy sunflowers — and then walk away without buying anything. But he understood, he said, that few would want to take a perishable bouquet to the airport or a hotel room.

As a visitor turned to leave after chatting with him, though, he waved his hands in an emphatic gesture to halt them.

“Wait, wait!” he said. “Here, have a daisy.”

Donald J. Trump’s latest financial disclosure lists more than $100 million in liabilities stemming from three civil lawsuits he lost in New York that required him to obtain bonds to pay the judgments — but also profits from licensing fees at Trump-branded properties in Dubai and Oman, as well as income that he made from his post-presidential books, including a Trump-endorsed Bible.

The former president also holds more than $1 million in cryptocurrency as he courts the industry for financial support in his 2024 campaign. A related industry, NFT collectibles , is also a source of income.

The disclosure, filed on Thursday and required annually for federal candidates and officeholders, often describes assets, investments, sources of income and liabilities in broad ranges, though some figures are provided in greater detail.

The three new liabilities that appear on Mr. Trump’s form are all related to his legal troubles, including a line item of more than $50 million to cover his bond in a civil fraud case brought by the New York attorney general, Letitia James.

The two judgments against him in the sexual abuse case involving E. Jean Carroll are listed as “litigation; stayed pending appeal; bonded.” The larger of the two is listed in the largest category for liabilities: $50 million or more. The actual judgment was for $83.3 million .

The book “Letters to Trump,” a compendium of personal notes that various celebrities have written to Mr. Trump over many decades, with short blurbs about the people in question, brought in $4.5 million, according to the filing. (The book includes a letter from Willie Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco with whom Mr. Trump claims he was traveling when they experienced an emergency helicopter landing. Mr. Trump included that anecdote in the book, but Mr. Brown says it did not take place, and another Black politician from California, Nate Holden, says it was actually him on that helicopter ride .)
